Roadworks hit all main routes Sara Hollyman All four main roads connecting Richmond and Nelson are undergoing road works at the same time due to a “compressed construction season”. The four roads are owned by three separate authorities, bringing into question the communication between each of them. This week, work on the Richmond Deviation will see the installation of traffic barriers. On Whakatu Drive, maintenance will take place at night during the week. Both of these roads are owned by Waka Kotahi. On Main Rd Stoke, a Nelson City Council road, works to upgrade the storm water system is ongoing while the Tasman District Council-owned Salisbury Rd will

have road works as an aged water main is upgraded. Tasman District Council’s transport manager, Jamie McPherson, says while it is unusual for all three roads to be experiencing maintenance and infrastructure development at the same time, the respective road controlling authorities are working together to ensure disruption is minimised. “All traffic lanes are still operating during peak traffic times.” He says the trio of construction has come about from a compressed construction season, and unseasonal weather in an already compressed season. Metservice records show the region received less than half the average recorded rainfall in January (27mm compared to

65.6mm), but a wet February saw the ‘summer’ rainfall numbers exceed average. “It is helpful there are reduced numbers of vehicles on the road due to more people working from home however, we appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding while this important work takes place,” Jamie says. The installation of the new traffic barrier on the Richmond Deviation closed the southbound lane of traffic (those heading from Nelson to Richmond) on Monday and Tuesday between 8pm and 5am. Tonight, the stretch of road will be closed completely between 9pm and 5am. At the same time, night closures have begun on Whakatu Drive between the Annesbrook and

Raeward Fresh roundabouts, with the road closing at 8pm through to 5am, every night until Friday. While this closure is in place, Waka Kotahi systems manager, Top of the South, Andrew James, says they will be catching up with some other highway, vegetation and streetlight maintenance which had been “a bit harder to fit in, due to the very wet summer”. If weather, or any other issues interfere with the planned works, Whakatu Drive may also be closed overnight on Sunday, 20 March. The detour for the closures on SH6 is via Main Rd Stoke and Salisbury Rd, however, both of these roads also have construction going on.

The replacement of an aged water main along Salisbury Rd will cause traffic disruption until July, while Main Rd Stoke has been disrupted since 2021 for the Saxton Creek flood protection upgrade. Waka Kotahi journey manager Tresca Forrester says night-time is when traffic is at its lowest, so pressure on the detour route for residents is lower. “However, we appreciate that there is work happening on council-managed roads also and we are working closely with the council traffic managers to minimise disruption as much as we can.” “We understand that this will mean longer journey times for everyone, and we appreciate your patience,” Tresca says.

ERIN BRADNOCK The Waimea Dam’s latest $20 million increase and new deadline came under the scrutiny of the Tasman District Council last Thursday. In a mid-year report released late February, Waimea Water Ltd revealed the construction costs to complete the dam will need to rise to $185m, an increase of $20m from the $164m estimate presented in February 2021 and $80m over the amount forecasted in 2018 when the decision was made to proceed with construction. Waimea Water Ltd chief executive Mike Scott explained the anticipated cost increases. The proposed July to September 2022 deadline was then labelled as “overly optimistic” by one Tasman District councillor. Councillors Mark Greening, Christeen Mackenzie and Dean McNamara called into question Waimea Water Ltd’s timeline, pointing to Scott’s estimate during the meeting of the amount of construction currently completed “at about

Picking positivity for Willy’s cancer fight JO KENT Turning a field of golden flowers into gold coins was made all the easier knowing the proceeds will go towards four-year-old William Boylett’s cancer care. Kate Marshall from Waimea Nurseries says she was approached by local charity Bellyful with the idea of letting them pick and sell the sunflowers in their field to provide financial support for the Stoke family. “Willy’s mum Sarah Kerby set up Bellyful in Nelson in 2018 to provide meals for families with sick children. The thought of her now being in a similar position is heartbreaking. She’s helped so many people in the community, we were pleased to be able to help her.” Willy was diagnosed last month, after doctors discovered a 12cm tumor on his adrenal gland during an MRI scan. Sarah says Willy had a fever while they were camping at the start of January and was complaining about sore legs. He’d also been quite tired, and not eating much. “We took him to the doctor, and he was diagnosed with an autoinflammatory response in his legs, and told he’d come right in a week.” However, the next week he was home with a cough, and the week after he was home with an ear infection. “They sent us to A&E after our fourth trip to the GP, where an

MRI showed a tumour, later diagnosed as a neuroblastoma. It had spread to his skull, left humerus, forearms, femora, lower legs, neck, hips, and sternum.” The family flew to Christchurch Hospital a few days later to start aggressive treatment. “I’m blown away at the generosity of Waimea Nurseries, and at the effort people are going to for my family. Sunflowers are one of my favourite flowers and have always bought me joy, so it was particularly touching.” She says Willy’s odds are currently about 50 per cent survival. “We’re throwing everything at it - six rounds of chemo, stem cell rescue, radiation, and surgery. The doctors have been clear that at this stage they are treating him with the goal of curing him into adulthood.” Willy has just completed his first week of chemo, which he described as being “a bit spicy”. The family are spending most of their days at hospital having blood transfusions but go back to Ronald McDonald House at night, which is where they are staying for the next year while Willy undergoes treatment. She says that the shock diagnosis has completely upended their lives and they are now spending most of their days in isolated wards. “I haven’t seen my other son Baillie in a month. He had his 9th birthday without his mum or brother with him.”

And Willy has gone from being a sociable four-year-old to being a tired little lad covered in tubes. “He’s kept his sense of humour though.” Sarah says the staff at the hospital have been amazing and, thanks to the medication Willy is taking, he hasn’t become nauseous. “He was in a lot of pain from pressure inside his bones before chemo started, and that’s now

Compostable meat bags a New Zealand first December 8, 2021

Fresh Choice owner Gary Watson says he is ‘pretty chuffed’ with the response to the compostable meat bags use. Fresh Choice’s butchery has vacuumpacked meat in compostable bags since December and has offered a drop-off bin for the return of the bags for anyone who doesn’t compost. He says, in a normal world he would have numbers of how many bags have been returned to the store, but currently doesn’t have them. Gary says they will give another push for people to bring back the bags so more can be returned to Greenwaste to Zero.

Search for Marg’s saviour March 9, 2022

Marg Farelly has tracked down the man who she says saved her life on the side of the road in Richmond last month. The man’s partner first messaged Marg through Facebook after seeing last week’s article. “She said her partner was a very humble man and didn’t want any fuss, so I told them I’d respect their privacy and keep him anonymous,” Marg says. On Sunday she spoke with the man on the phone and was finally able to thank him for assisting her after she injured her leg on a friend’s bike. “I was just so appreciative of what he’d done, we had lots of laughs. We had a big, long chat, it was great. “We found our man.” Marg says thanks to the article she has reconnected with past colleagues and friends who have contacted her.

Mother fears cars won’t be able to stop Jenny niCHolson A local mother says it’s frightening seeing the many near misses at the Murchison Area School crossing. The school’s crossing is on SH6 and for most of the day is a 50kmh zone. During school drop off and pick up times the speed drops to 40kmh as indicated by an electronic sign well back from the crossing. Angie Hunt says many cars and trucks fail to slow down and don’t seem to realise there is a crossing there. “It’s really scary especially when it’s your kids, there would be no stopping at speeds some people are going. I approached the Tasman District Council, but it is not in their jurisdiction,” Angie says. “NZTA just fobbed it off.” After the Kaikoura earthquake, when State Highway 1 was closed, Heather Kinzett went to battle to get the flashing 40kmh sign. She says she wasn’t seeing much progress until National List MP Maureen Pugh stepped

Covid forces schools to distance learning Last Tuesday there were 95 members of the Waimea College school community isolating with Covid-19 and many others isolating as household contacts. With many staff also isolating, Year 12 students moved to distance learning last Wednesday and were due to return to school today. Principal Scott Haines says they are closely monitoring staff levels and would let parents know if another year level needs to be rostered home for online distance learning. He says staff have been amazing at both keeping in contact with students and covering classes for their colleagues.

Most homes jointly owned Tasman Nelson Marlborough has the highest percentage of property jointly owned by a male and a female at 58 per cent, according to recent Corelogic figures. At 21 per cent, the proportion of property owned only by females was the lowest in the country. However, that 21 percent was higher than the 20.5 percent owned by males, which was also the lowest of the regions.

She believes they need more signage, stop lights at the crossing, or speed bumps. “I can see at some stage someone will get run over.” Angie says the current visual prompts are easy to ignore and would like to see something else added. Speed bumps that force cars to slow down, a light that flashes red once a child pushes the button, or a light giving drivers their speed and a prompt to slow down are all options she has thought of. Police senior constable Matthew Elliott says his observation is about 25 per cent of

drivers are oblivious to the 40 kmh sign. He says they are distracted and it takes police to step in and remind them of their obligations. “There are a number of engagements with the public that happen each morning I’m there. These are drivers approaching the crossing at speed, usually from the Nelson side.” “Police are there to prevent harm, not just catch speedsters,” he says. “Our presence influences people to slow down.”

In his conversations with drivers, most people say they didn’t realise it was a school. “I’m not dealing with locals, it’s people travelling through.” Murchison Area School principal Andy Ashworth says they are very well supported by the local police. “We provide, at our own cost, a crossing officer before and after school each day, plus, a staff member is on duty to help each day.”

Diabetes community calls for Pharmac funding Jenny nicholson Paula Hemara lay on the bed and held her four-year-old son tightly, trapping him in a bear hug with her arms and legs. A nurse helped hold Kobe down and the doctor pricked his finger a second time. That was Kobe’s introduction to a life with type 1 diabetes. From that time on Kobe became vocal, saying: “No, not a finger prickle.” Diagnosed with diabetes, Kobe was sent to hospital and Paula watched while he had frequent finger pricks throughout the day and night to check his blood glucose. “I was so anxious,” Paula says. “Kobe would hide from the nurses and didn’t want them to touch him.” Diabetes NZ chief executive Heather Verry says the estimated annual cost of diabetes in New Zealand is $2.1 billion. Most of these costs come from treating complications from diabetes. There are glucose monitors which help manage diabetes

before complications set in, significantly reducing the cost that comes from treating diabetes complications. These continuous glucose monitors (CGM) attach to the arm or stomach and give accurate blood glucose level in seconds through a digital sensor. Heather says that anyone using a CGM describes the technology as life-changing. But with costs starting at $50 per week, many simply cannot afford one. “Because CGMs aren’t funded, many New Zealanders living with diabetes, including children, will never experience the life-changing, life-saving benefits,” Heather says. “That’s not good enough.” She says it’s about time the Government took the needs of the diabetes community seriously. Diabetes NZ called on people with diabetes to flood Facebook and Instagram yesterday with images and posts telling their diabetes story. They are hoping New Zea-

make for Kobe and that was to pay for CGM. “For us it was a no-brainer to use a CGM whatever the sacrifices we had to make,” Paula says.

Record job listings for Tasman region Max Frethey February saw a record number of job advertisements in Tasman for the second month in a row. SEEK’s latest data shows that job listings for the Tasman region increased by 6 per cent compared with January. This growth continues with the upward trend for Tasman, which saw an increase in job adverts of 53 per cent from last year, and 93 per cent from February 2019. SEEK says these strong job advertisement numbers are reflective of the nationwide job-listing figures. However, despite a record-breaking number of adverts, job hunters are hesitant to apply, with applications falling 9 per cent since January. Al Hungerford from Nelson Labour Hire is observing similar trends at his recruitment agency with many businesses approaching him and seeking staff. “We used to have three new customers ringing up every day and asking for new workers,” he says. “We’re unable to supply because there’s just a shortage [of workers] at the moment.” Nelson Labour Hire is now having to turn away new businesses that come to them for staff. The number of people looking for employment is down too, he says. “We used to get three people every day looking for work, but now we’re lucky to get three a week.” He adds that they have even had to begin rationing some of their customers, sending them less workers than they asked to try and balance the demand for staff.

Donna takes on hospice’s new role Jo Kent

Nelson Tasman Hospice hopes that its newest addition to the team will bring the ‘wow’ factor. Former head of marketing at World of Wearable Art, Donna Ching-Tregidga, is taking on a new role as head of supporter engagement and income development. The role is a revision of the previous fundraising and marketing manager position. Chief executive Tony Gray says hospice is excited to welcome Donna to the team. “She will bring significant community and commercial experience to hospice at a time when we face very real challenges in the delivery and the future development of specialist palliative care.” Donna has more than two decades experience in marketing, partnerships, strategy and business development. “Like so many people throughout the region, I have been personally

touched by the incredible and specialised work of Nelson Tasman Hospice and I’m looking forward to contributing to and making a positive impact on the service.” Hospice’s $3m funding shortfall continues to grow each year, but that shortfall is largely reduced as a result of the region’s very generous community. “But, in reality, the total funding for our hospice can barely resource the existing service,” Tony says. “We know that needs are growing exponentially, whether this is clinical or in the extended services we provide for the region.” Medical director Jodie Battley says palliative care has never been more relevant. “To meet the increasing demand and complexity in the context of limited resources, we must base our model of care on need.” A key focus is the expansion of an education programme to support health care partners to provide basic palliative care.

Wheels stop turning for long-time car dealer SARA HOLLYMAN When Gary McGregor looks back on his long career selling cars, he says it’s the people he will miss most. Gary has just retired after more than 30 years in the car industry, 22 working for Shane Drummond at The Car Company. Gary first started in the car industry working with Shane for Houston Motors in Motueka. Having injured his leg working in the orchard industry, Gary found himself off work for a few months. “I knew Shane personally then, and needed something to stop me going crazy, so I asked him if I could go down to the Motueka yard of Houston Motors and wash cars for a few hours a day, for no pay.” The rest is history. “I was never knowledgeable about cars, cars were just cars to me and probably still are, I just enjoy talking to people and helping them find what they want.” He says there’s no specific car he’s sold that stands out to him. “There are some cars I sold when I first started, you wouldn’t mind owning a few of them nowadays, because they’re probably worth tenfold now. Shane says Gary is his longeststanding employee at 22 years. “I’ve employed a lot of people over a long time, Gary is not only humorous but very family-orien-

Being a poor sleeper he says he’d rather be at work being useful than waiting around at home having a cup of coffee. “I’ve talked to people on the yard at 6am who have come back later that day and purchased the car.” Shane says that’s just one of the

things that makes Gary unique. Gary has been The Car Company’s major representative in Golden Bay, attending the local A&P Show every year, except when it was cancelled due to Covid-19 in 2021. He has also spearheaded the charity golf competition in the bay for the past 25 years, raising muchneeded funds for Tākaka Netball, the rugby club and Tākaka Primary School, something he will

continue to do even after retirement. “I always say, I work in Nelson, sleep in Motueka and socialise in Golden Bay.” Gary has sold cars to three generations of some families in the region, and he says he will miss the job so much he has decided to stay on as a casual employee to fill in for annual and sick leave with staff. “To have a guy with his knowl-

edge; most people when they go, they’ve gone the day they hand their notice in, but he’s the total opposite of all that,” Shane says, Gary says now that he’s retired, he’s looking forward to heading to Queenstown to visit one of his grandsons, who is now a greenkeeper at Millbrook Resort – home of the New Zealand open. “What better way to visit my grandson than at the NZ Open,” he says.

Local Ukrainians speak out about invasion Jenny nicholson

Iryna remembers when the Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union, and the freedom they felt when they finally got independence. “We could finally live our own way, build our own country under our own government,” she says. “It has been good. Ukrainian people are very kind, warm people, not a fighting nation.” Fikrat (James) Lukmanov was born in Bagdad while his father was a Soviet Union diplomat there. He says there has been a massive outflow of Russians from Russia. “They have to leave everything behind because they don’t want to be part of the war,” James says. “There are kilometres of queues from St Petersburg to Finland, of people trying to flee Russia so they can live with freedom and rights.” Another Russian woman says there is now the threat of 15 years imprisonment for anyone who disagrees with Putin and his view of the war.

Brian Hore has recently changed jobs and his new role is also one of managing a lot of change. As Waimea College’s newly-appointed assistant deputy principal, Brian’s portfolios include curriculum and e-learning. Distance learning is the new reality for students who are isolating either with Covid-19 or as household contacts. Brian says the college was ready to meet the need of the new hybrid world of some learning in the classroom and some learning online. “Students isolating at home still have access to what is happening in the classroom,” Brian says. “That doesn’t just help them

keep up with learning, it also keeps some connection with their class.” He says Waimea College is lucky they are not yet facing a huge number of students needing to isolate, but says they are ready. While students are technically expected to be at school if they are not isolating or unwell, Brian says the school is working with, and understands the needs of, families who have immunocompromised members. Curriculum is currently an area of immense change and Brian is keeping up with those changes and looks forward to seeing them implemented at the college. Brian began his teaching career at Waimea College before mov-

ing to Nelson College to take on an assistant principal role. He says he’s happy to be back at Waimea College and is passionate about relationships with students and staff. “You need to be connected to the students for them to learn as well as possible.” He admits to a nerdy streak, saying he also loves data. “Data helps with looking at what is working or isn’t working, analysis and interventions, who’s at risk, who could achieve more.” He loves the outdoors, saying he can often be found hunting, fishing and diving. However, he is also an avid video gamer. While he has a list of portfolios, for Brian the best part of his job is still teaching the students.

Iryna Jones wonders every day if her family in the Ukraine will be there to talk to her tomorrow. Iryna joined other local Ukrainians, Russians and Kiwis on Nelson’s church steps on Saturday to show their support for Ukraine, which is facing bombardments from Russian invading forces. Tears flowed as families talked of how helpless they feel knowing their loved ones are in a war zone. Iryna worries about her son, grandson, and mother. Her son is manager at a poultry factory, working to feed the Ukrainian people. While he isn’t fighting, there are Russian planes overhead and Iryna says they attack any building, and it doesn’t matter who is in it. Her grandson is 13, old enough to understand what is happening around him. Iryna’s husband Roger says he would go and fight for them if he could. “It’s tearing our hearts to bits,” he says.

Proudly brought to you by...

A long way to Mount Heslington - Part Two Ruth Russ Once Vic had recovered from his war injuries, on 20 February 1945, he and Paulette went to visit a “rehab farm” at Mount Heslington. During the visit it “rained like hell all day” but this didn’t put them off the farm. They put in an application for it the next day. Two days later, Vic went “to Havelock to get marriage license, got three bottles of wine and 4 of lemonade.” The day of the 27th of February, Vic drafted wether lambs in the morning. “Married in afternoon, went to Blenheim.” In March Vic got word he had drawn the ballot for the Mount Heslington farm. They prepared for the big move off Vic’s family farm, hindered of course by the various farming inconveniences: “Another Goddam puncture” saw him “buggaring around fixing tyres” for two days. At

the Brightwater sale Vic purchased furniture for their house (£34) and a plough (£7), among other things. In April they walked their modest herd of 13 Jersey cows from Tinline up the Maungatapu Track, out at the Maitai, and down Vanguard Street in Nelson, eventually reaching their destination on the steep hills behind Brightwater. With Paulette and Ken’s daughter Pat joining them at the end of May, they settled into their new life. The farm itself was not particularly workable. Of the 75 acres, almost all of it (save 2 paddocks) was covered in gorse and browntop, and with an assortment of contractors had to be ploughed and sown afresh. But over the first two years Vic increased his herd to 30, despite working in a very limited budget as per the terms of his State Advances loan. He would go on to be the first farmer in Nelson to run

100 head of cattle. Vic and Paulette had three children. Vic would always make note of little things such as “Paulette drove truck into ditch”, or once it was his mother, but he himself accidentally backed their Buick over their son Philip at one point (luckily he had no lasting injuries). Philip later worked the farm with his father. Vic’s diaries continued for decades, although by 2000 they included unusual entries such as “Chinese takeaway for tea” and a good many well-earned “lazy” days. In late September that year Vic had a fall. Paulette’s handwriting takes over the diary, explaining what had happened (it was, apparently, the week for it, as “Grace” also had a fall and “David” fell off the roof). Vic died on 26 February 2022, the day before he and Paulette would celebrate their 57th wedding anniversary.

Watching prices soar at the pump this week, I couldn’t help thinking that we should’ve kicked the petrol habit a long time ago. We’ve known for ages that cheap oil wasn’t going to last forever but beating an addiction is never easy, so what can we do to get the fossil fuel monkey off our back? Kai Rescue win $30k solar system Kai Rescue will receive a $30,000 solar system as winners of the Solar for Good campaign. Solar energy company Lightforce asked locals to nominate charities and not-for-profits that were doing great work in the community during its Solar for Good campaign in Nelson and Marlborough. Nelson Environment Centre’s Kai Rescue programme was awarded the win of a $30,000 solar system to be installed at its Nelson headquarters. Kai Rescue programme administrator, Joanna Pahl, says they are “beyond thrilled” with the win. “Kai Rescue is a 100 per cent charitable programme which means it doesn’t generate any income. “It costs about $200,000 a year to operate so it’s quite a high-cost operation.” The Kai Rescue programme was established in 2017 with the aim of minimising food waste in the community. The team collects food from supermarkets, growers, manufacturers and other food outlets

Kai Rescue volunteers bring food in ready for redistribution. Photo: Supplied. that is good enough to eat but is surplus or non-saleable and that food is then distributed through more than 60 community groups to individuals and families in need. “It’s so fantastic to have won something like the solar system, its just another expense that

can help us reduce our outgoing costs, which means the donations and grants we receive can go into more community food support and waste reduction,” Joanna says. “We want to express huge thanks to Lightforce for this incredibly generous initiative - just wow.”

Kai Rescue runs on the energy and dedication of volunteers and Lightforce chief experience officer Kat Rundle says it’s great that it can also run on the energy of the sun. “Cutting energy bills for programmes like Kai Rescue by installing a solar system means they

can spend more money doing the things they’re passionate about,” she says. “We want to create a lighter, brighter future so we really related to their vision of sustainability and generosity. “They do so much good work to help the community.” Joanna says Kai Rescue has some really exciting projects coming up this year including a plan to get together some funding for an E-vehicle. “It’s been a big year but we feel like we’re in a really strong position,” she says. Lightforce is responsible for around 20 per cent of New Zealand’s solar installations and is expanding rapidly around the country. And as the price of energy continues to go up and the price of panels continues to drop, Kat says solar is growing in popularity. “We rely on the sun to produce our food, but more New Zealanders are recognising that the sun can also help power our modern lives more sustainably and affordably.”

Storey Home Collection are holding a stocktake clearance sale and lighting and interior consultant, Serena Harris, says now is the perfect time to find a real bargain for your home. The team cater to all interior decorating needs, stocking contemporary, traditional, designer, and generational brands ranging from both outdoor and indoor furniture to lighting and home decor. “We are clearing product at great prices. We have a lot of new stock in and with current supply issues that we have all been facing, our sale will be a great chance to purchase those key pieces while they are available.” Refurbishing table and floor lamps is an easy, cost-effective change that can make a big impact. “We encourage people to bring in their existing lamps and we can work together, trying different styles of shades to update it to a more modern look for their home.” Storey Home Collection also stock quality outdoor furniture, designed specifically to withstand the elements. What you can do to be more environmently friendly? There are lots of small, achievable changes that ordinary New Zealanders can make to help lower our ecological footprints. It's up to you to decide which work for you, but here are a few ideas: 1. Use public transport, walk, or cycle - around 20% of New Zealand's emissions come from transport. Even just not driving one day a week can make a big difference. 2. Choose renewable electricity - around three quarters of New Zealand's electricity comes from renewable sources, and WWF's modelling has shown that we could reach 100% renewable electricity by 2025. Some New Zealand electricity companies are powered

by 100% renewable electricity - where does your power come from? 3. Don't waste electricity - You've probably already changed your lightbulbs to LEDs or compact fluorescant bulbs, but it's still great to turn them off when you're not in the room. It also helps to unplug appliances at the wall, wash clothes in cold water (which is often better for the clothes too!) and not use a clothes dryer unnecessarily. 4. Cut waste and recycle - This one's a big win-win. What's good for the world's ecosystems is good for the climate. Rubbish sent to the landfill emits methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.

Let Your Love Grow

6. Eat differently - About half of New Zealand's greenhouse gas emissions come from animal agriculture. Eating locallygrown, organic food makes a difference, and cutting out meat and animal products can make an even bigger change. Can you have a plantbased diet just one day a week?

Reduce, reuse and recycle has been the main mantra at Greenwaste to Zero for the past 17 years. The locally owned and operated, family-run company, based in Richmond, provides green waste recycling services to the region, producing organic compost useful for gardens, landscaping, horticulture and agriculture. Their 100% organically-produced compost is made using the Windrow method. An extremely labour-intensive, but effective way to ensure a quality product is produced. Co-owner, Colleen Wastney, says there has been a noticeable increase of environmental awareness. “There has definitely been a boost in that area, but we can always do more.” Greenwaste to Zero also continue to offer collection services for verified compostable products to local businesses looking to help create a more sustainable environment. Organically made ‘Lawnpost’ compost, bark, pea straw, garden mulch and topsoils are available along with gravels, river stones, chips and rock suitable for all landscaping needs. A variety of trailers are also available for hire. Contact Greenwaste to Zero on 544 8857 or email: info@greenwastezero.co.nz www.greenwastezero.co.nz Locally owned and operated, Alaron Products has partnered with clients to develop a multitude of high-quality health care products for over 25 years. Passionate about the environment and committed to being ‘a good global citizen’, Alaron have implemented strategic initiatives to improve its sustainability. Encouraging staff members to leave their cars at home, Alaron offer employees $5 per day to those who choose to walk, bike, bus or carpool. Alaron is exploring partnering with a local e-bike supplier to offer staff great options to purchase an e-bike. The company has also just installed 810 solar panels, the largest solar system in Te Tauihu. Dylan Adams, Alaron’s head of HR, says the installation of a heat exchange system will reduce the company's gas consumption by 90%. “This captures the heat generated by our air handling systems and reuses this energy to heat our hot water.” “We are also working to establish a complete and robust waste diversion policy, alongside our normal recycling plan, working with other business to reuse waste.” This includes repurposing cardboard packaging and supporting local Restore Charity Shop.

Local couple believe the future of transportation is electric Local couple Andrew and Sherie Schwass, owners of Electrify NZ Nelson, understand the need kiwis have to explore our beautiful country and, with fuel prices soaring, offer an alternative for day-to-day commuting. Their new business, Electrify NZ Nelson, is situated near the Nelson I-Site. Director Andrew has been operating the successful bike rental company, Kiwi Journeys, for the last 12 years and says it is obvious that e-bikes are the future of cycling. “So many people ride our electric bikes at Kiwi Journeys, and then want one for themselves, so it was a natural progression to open the local specialised store, Electrify NZ Nelson.” Andrew, a successful businessman and first-class cricketer, says he has seen the popularity of e-bikes explode in the Nelson region. “Nelson is one of the e-bike hotspots in New Zealand. We have great weather and great riding opportunities”. According to data collected between 2014 and 2020, New Zealand’s e-bike imports skyrocketed from 2,000 units a year to 50,000 units. And, he says, as kiwis continue to face Covid restrictions, the demand for Kiwi Journeys multi-day tours increased an unprecedented 300 per cent over the last 12 months. “I’ve seen the growth in our rental business, and I think the same trends are driving the growth in e-bikes,” says Andrew. “People want to get outside and explore our country and e-bikes are the perfect way to do that.” Electrify NZ Nelson is locally owned and stock several major e-bike brands including Haibike and KTM, as well as NZ-designed Black and Smartmotion electric bikes. Options are available that cater to all riding styles and budgets, from $2499 up to high-end electric mountain bikes. They have just launched the newest range, Black GT & Tempo city and commuter bikes, perfectly designed for the daily traveller. “These 45kmh-capable e-bikes are the ultimate answer to urban e-bike transportation.” Andrew and Sherie encourage locals to pop in and see the range for themselves. “Come in and take our bikes for a decent test ride!” As an added bonus, all e-bike purchases from Electrify NZ Nelson receive a free 12 month pass on the Mapua Ferry. The complex has been operating for 35 years and the team are committed to protecting the environment and using renewable resources, all whilst providing top-quality accommodation, an on-site restaurant, a Day Spa as well as pool and spa facilities. Kimi Ora also supports the Tasman Bay Guardians by donating $1 for each booked room at the resort and also sponsor the Riwaka School -Experiencing Marine Reserves Programme. Kimi Ora achieved a Climate Positive Certificate which means they are committed to offsetting at least 120% of their measured CO2 emissions. It was important for Kimi Ora to find ways to reduce their emissions where possible but also acknowledging that some emissions may be temporality be impossible to eliminate. By offsetting, the business is able to reduce the climate impact it has by investing in forests that produce a range of environmental co-benefits.

Sport Powerboats race to glory www.shuttersport.co.nz

Jack MalcolM High octane racing was a highlight of the weekend at the National Powerboat Championships held on Lake Rotoiti. With racers reaching top speeds of over 250km an hour, spectators dotted the shoreline to watch the sideby-side racing in pristine conditions on Saturday. Organizer and Rotoiti Powerboat Club president Chris Dufeu said they were determined to hold the event under the current Covid settings, which required a lot of co-operation between the club, DOC, spectators and the competitors. Watching the crowd enjoy the spectacle of the powerboats taking corners at such high speeds while being so close to each other that they sometimes touched made all the hard work worth it, he says.

Results:

NZ GP Hydroplane title winner David Alexander in Miss Waverley. Photo: Shot360. “I’m super proud of the hard work put in by all volunteers on the day to put on a hugely successful National Championship, with over 60 boats competing.” The local club crowned four national champions at the event, with Julian Stilwell taking home the F1 title, Wayne Wells winning the New Zealand Grand Nationals title, Lee Merrion

winning the F3 title and Tate Burns winning the New Zealand Clubmans title. Sunday’s club trophy racing had to be cancelled due to poor weather and will have to be held next year because the club receives one permit for an event each year, Chris says. “We’ve run the nationals three of the last four years.

Our water is very good water to race on and we choose March because that’s when the weather’s normally most settled.” “Sunday looked more like an ocean than a lake. It wasn’t forecasted.” All of the National Championship events were held on Saturday and were not affected by the cancellation of Sunday’s racing.

Avaya dominate GODZone JACK MALCoLM Nathan Fa’avae’s and his team, Avaya, dominated last week’s GODZone Adventure race to win by over ten-and-a-half hours. The 710km long course traversed from the East to West coasts of the lower South Island, taking the team 5days, 23h and 55m to complete. Nathan says it was a sense of relief and accomplishment crossing the finish line after a grueling schedule that saw them get only 20 hours of sleep throughout the race. “You condition for it. We’ve obviously done training for what the challenge is and what we’re taking on. Our training planning and preparation is to avoid injuries, it’s about racing sensibly.”

Leigh returns to netball roots Jonty Dine Leigh Gibbs understands that quality coaches attract more players. The gold medalist and world champion coach is stepping down from her role as Nelson Netball general manager as she looks to help grow the game she loves on a national scale. Leigh will take on the position of community coaching manager for Netball New Zealand, giving her oversight across the whole county at community level. “It’s what you see out on the courts every weekend, so this was an opportunity for me to focus on my passion area, so that was hard to resist.” She describes the move as a bit of a ‘back to the future,’ as in a previous role she was overseeing ‘coach force,’ a system for delivery of coaching into centres throughout New Zealand. The former Silver Ferns captain says she will put a strong emphasis on developing “the people who develop the coaches”. “If you’re directly working with coaches, you just couldn’t cover the number of coaches you’d be needing to work with.” Her ambition is to bring more quality, capability, and ultimately, more coaches to the game. Leigh also hopes to maintain a presence at Nelson Netball. “By being at the coalface, I’m experiencing the requirements I am asking people to deliver on. If you can keep your pencil sharp in the actual practice of coach development, you are a lot more aware of what is needed.” She says quality coaching translates to players having a better ex-

The team had already won GODZone three times and Nathan, who has won it five times himself, said it was a highlight to maintain their unbeaten legacy. Each year the event is held in a different region. The course details released a week in advance so competitors can plan how they will tackle the challenging terrain. There’s often multiple routes racers can take and it is up to the teams and their navigation skills to decide which will be the fastest. “The way we race is to pay no attention to what the other teams are doing. “We’ve learnt through the years that nearly all the info you get (on other teams progress) is incorrect anyway, so we just ignore it.”

Cooper Grant is one step closer to his Major League Baseball dreams after signing with Cochise College in Arizona. The Nelson Heat player will head to the desert state later this year to play ball and continue his academic studies. Also a quality first-five, Cooper opted to end a promising rugby career as he looks to follow in the footsteps of his father and legendary Black Sox pitcher, Marty Grant. “I’m definitely excited. A bit nervous but mainly excited. I know every day will be different to what I’m used to but it’s a great opportunity to play, to study and to travel, and I knew I had to make the most of it.” Cooper says, with Cochise College’s combination of win history and coaching prowess, it meant an easy choice among the offers. “Cochise has the athletic programme and development I was looking for. It offers the most

competitive baseball, and the coach has given me the chance to be a two-way player, meaning I get to hit and pitch. It felt like the best opportunity for me.” Nelson Heat president Rachel Knowles says Cooper has great drive and ambition and his success is a direct result of his willingness to work harder than most. “He is an inspiration for all of our players,” she says. “We are extremely proud of him and excited about the next stage of his baseball journey.” While waiting to head overseas, Cooper has secured a contract with Baseball New Zealand as a coaching and development officer, delivering baseball programmes to schools and teams throughout the Top of the South. “Being able to immerse myself in baseball over the coming months is perfect for me. “I really enjoy teaching the young ball players of the future, it’s great fun and very rewarding.”
