After 12 years, Richmond has a new Mayor Bruno Saia Reporter

Tim King has been elected as the new Mayor of the Tasman District. He is the first new face at the mayoral office since Richard Kempthorne was elected for the position 12 years ago. Brent Maru came in a close second, with 5,707 votes, followed by Dean McNamara with 3,360 and Maxwell Clark, with 2,481. A total of 19,845 people voted, which represents 51.67% of all district ratepayers- slightly up on last year and ahead of the Nelson area. Voters also elected 13 councillors for the TDC and seven of those were re-elected. The preliminary results come from the second count of all votes. The third count will be the final results and will be released during the week. New mayor Tim King was very happy with the overall results. “Change is good. Continuity is also good. I think we’ve been fortunate over the time I’ve been on the council to get three, four, five changes at each election. That brings new people into the council, new ideas making a positive contribution, having
a different approach to issues, but retaining enough to keep the continuity going on things that are working,” he says. At his farm in Brightwater, one day after the results were announced, Tim was relieved that the hard work of the campaign is over. “It’s quite a process to go through, the whole election and the campaign and it’s not my favourite part of it. But I am happy that I put my name forward and that I got the job,” he says. TDC’s new mayor was born and bred in the region. He has three sons, all ‘married and good to go’ and he celebrated his election win at his farm in Brightwater. “This is a brilliant place to raise a family and grow up and live and work. It’s a fantastic part of the world,” Tim says, next to his sheep dog Bra (who was already named when Tim got him). Growth, development, infrastructure and environment are some of the main challenges the new mayor is going to face from now on. “Particularly water quality is going to be a huge issue quite quickly, or even immediately with the government freshwater policies,” he says.

Richmond has Plenty of new faces on the council For Moutere-Waimea Wa a new Mayor Bruno Saia Reporter
from PAGE 1 He will now get together with the elected councillors to make the first steps as mayor. “Over the next couple of weeks, I’ll talk with them all and see what it is that they want to achieve and work from there.” Building better connections within the district is one of Tim’s primary goals. “There is an issue in terms of the relationship with the council across the region because so much that we do is focused in the areas of the highest population. That’s something we have to work hard on.”

The Tasman District Council (TDC) elections brought five new faces to the table and seven re-elected councillors. Those new councillors are Celia Butler and Chris Hill, from Golden Bay Ward, Barry Dowler and Trindi Walker, from Motueka and Christeen Mackenzie, from Moutere-Waimea. “I’m very excited to have been given the opportunity to contribute around the table at the TDC. During the campaign, it was obvious to me the importance of the linkages through to the community and I am keen to work on this straight away,” says Christeen.

The first thing he did after the elections was to deliver on a campaign promise. “In Richmond, we’ve got some issues with congestion and we’ve got to work hard to try to get some money from the central government to improve that. From a personal point of view, I am going to start biking to the council. That was a commitment I made, so on Saturday afternoon, when I got the results, I ordered an e-bike and I might get it this week. And I’m going to bike to get a car off the road,” he says.

Local boy’s farewell after tragedy in Havelock Staff Reporter The family of a six-year-old Richmond boy who died in Havelock last week have farewelled their “shining star”. Nekko Paul Haworth was reported missing from Havelock in the early hours of Tuesday October 8. Police divers located his body in the marina after a short search on Tuesday afternoon. His funeral was held in Nelson on Monday. Nekko’s father Tom Haworth shared his grief earlier last week. He recalled the day his son was born on March 13, 2013. “(It was) was the happiest day of my life, I was ecstatic to welcome my boy into the world as news spread to family and friends,” he said. “I had never in my lifetime anticipated that six years later, I would be faced with the darkest day when I received a call saying my son was missing.” Tom said his “heart dropped”. “Hours later I received the news no parent should ever receive.” He said that Nekko held a smile that “radiated across his face to the point that it would be impossible not to return a

Nekko Haworth smile”. Nekko’s mother Gemma Astwood described the agony of losing her son as “the worst day of my life”. She shared a heart-breaking message on a fundraising website that has been set up to help the family. “My son was the best thing that [happened] in my life,” she said. “I’ll never forget you my darling boy.” Gemma’s father Graeme Astwood expressed the “pain and hurt we are all suffering” as
“indescribable” on a message shared to a community Facebook page. “My wonderful daughter Gemma always put Nekko first. Nekko was her [shining] star and rock. “So from now on when I go to work early in the morning on my bike I will look up in the sky and the bright shiny star will be my wonderful grandson looking down at me,” he said. Nekko’s death has been referred to the coroner and is under investigation by police.

Hope grower is first local to win national award Bruno Saia The ‘Young Grower of the Year’ awards had a special meaning to our region this year. Jono Sutton, 26, of Edens Road Fruit Ltd, Hope, was the first local to win the main competition. “This is one of horticulture’s highest achievements for a young person, so winning it is massive,”
says Jono. “To be the first Nelsonian to win was pretty cool and I’m pretty excited about that,” he says. He grows six different varieties of apples and boysenberries at a property on Eden Road. “We aim to produce 50 thousand cartons of apples and 400-500 tons of boysenberries a year,” he says. To win the ‘Young Grower of the
Year’ he was tested on practical and theoretical elements, such as pest and disease, irrigation, Excel spreadsheeting, tractor driving, business insurance and he had to deliver a speech. The winner was the person who received the most points across all the different modules. “I’ve competed in the national event once before, in 2013. It was
a long time ago. After six more years in the industry, I’ve learned a lot, especially around the business and management areas. I had a pretty good knowledge of most of the practical tasks then, but some of those business areas I’m a bit more familiarized with now,” says Jono. He proved his impressive skills and knowledge throughout the competition. As
the regional Nelson finalist, he was up against six other contestants from around New Zealand, in Tauranga. Two of Jono’s grandparents, who are also berry and apple growers, were there to support him. “I left school when I was 17 and went full-time orcharding. I’ve loved it since I was a kid. It was always a family thing and I always enjoyed it,” he says.

Nelson Matters
Jetstar’s decision to end its regional services from November 30 to centres like Nelson is a concerning blow to our local economy. My worry is that reduced competition will see airfares rise. We should not underestimate how important affordable air links are for Nelson. We are a geographically isolated region but our well located airport and frequent flights has given us a competitive advantage. We have much better air services than any other city of our size. The benefits have not just been for Nelsonians own private travel. The competitive airfares have helped make us an attractive des-
tination for our $400 million a year tourism sector. The quality of air services has also made Nelson a hub for hundreds of small professional service businesses that work all over New Zealand and contribute much to our local economy. Jetstar’s demise can be put down to three factors. These regional services started out in 2014 as part of the intense Trans-Tasman rivalry between Air NZ and Qantas. These airlines entered into a code share agreement last year reducing the flow of passengers from Jetstar’s owner, Qantas. Secondly, tourism and the NZ economy is slowing due to poor
Government policy and global uncertainty. The third contributor has been the rise in the cost of fuel. Nelson has been through this competitive cycle before in air services. We had cut throat competition between Origin Pacific and Air NZ from 1997 to 2006 that saw unsustainable low airfares. Costs crept up until Jetstar re-entered the market in 2014. Cut price fares like recent Jetstar specials of $30 could never last. Nelson needs stable, affordable fares that can be sustained. I am a loyalist to Air NZ as it way out class’s most international airlines for service and innovation.
544 Waimea Road, Nelson
The local Air NZ airport staff and flight crew give excellent service. Air NZ showed the right culture in offering to pick up displaced Jetstar bookings. I encourage Air NZ to be extra careful with its pricing and service standards with the return to having a near monopoly in Nelson. Any arrogance will result in a backlash from customers and its majority shareholder, the NZ public. I will not hesitate to lodge a Commerce Commission complaint if I see evidence of price gouging. We are fortunate, unlike other centres losing Jetstar, to have a check on Air NZ with Sounds Air. It is a good service that I use
when the times suit. We need to consciously choose to give Sounds Air a share of our business so as to keep some competitive pressure on Air NZ. I am also hopeful that Origin may re-enter the market. This month Nelson’s new airport terminal will be completed. This is a project I have long advocated for and of which our Airport Company has done a superb job of delivering. Despite the loss of Jetstar, I remain confident about the future of Nelson’s aviation industry and its continued growth. My job will be to help keep Nelson’s air services affordable and competitive. Advt.

New petrol station at Springs Junction Bruno Saia Springs Junction, an hour south of Murchison, is getting a brand new NPD Petrol Station. “Our new Self Serve site is scheduled to open in mid-December,” says Barry Sheridan, NPD’s CEO. “The construction is going well and remains on schedule to date, although the poor weather conditions have proven fairly challenging,” he says. They will offer all grades of fuel including the new NPD 100Plus high octane performance petrol. The site was designed to accommodate a future NPD convenience store if there is strong customer demand. “We identified Springs Junction as a strategic location within our NPD Retail Network to enable
NPD to better support the local community and farming operations for their fuel demands. It will also be a valued refuelling stop for motorists traveling between Nelson and Christchurch, especially our 100Plus customers, who need to top up in order to reach their destination,” says Barry. Their goal is to bring better valued fuel offerings to all South Island motorists, which is what the community has been wanting for a long time. “We like to ensure smaller rural communities also receive the benefits of our lower fuel prices from a spacious forecourt layout, multiple refuelling locations and with the comfort of an overhead canopy wherever possible,” Barry says.

Steve Page Dave Filer reckons that Filco Harley -Davidson is a “bit privileged” to have been chosen to help release the new concept bike the Low Rider S. The event was well attended and customers were keen to find out more. Built by Harley-Davidson, Dave says the engine is almost overbuilt and at 114 cu it’s one of the American manufacturers biggest bikes. “What makes this bike so unique is that while Harley have done all the hard work on the engine and frame, the customer can now take what is a clean canvas and start cus-
tomising the bike to suit his or her needs.” Dave said. “As a dealership we know that everybody has different ideas as to how they would like their bike to look and it makes little sense to unbolt a whole lot of spares etc and replace with a whole lot more in that search for the perfect ride. Now we are able to offer a fantastic bike that you still ride away but there is a lot of options available to personalise and customise your ride. In fact most of the parts you would use are here and available for your choosing!” The bike is seen here in its base form and still very rideable, is priced $29,995 ride away.

Where to find and how to use a defibrillator Do you know how to use an AED (Automated External Defibrillators) and have you ever needed to use one? Waimea Weekly reader’s were asked this question recently. Here’s what Dr Tony Smith, Medical Director at St Johns advised: “When someone has a heart at-
tack (sudden cardiac arrest or SCA), an AED can be used to deliver a short, powerful electric shock to help the heart regain its natural rhythm. If a person in cardiac arrest receives a shock from a defibrillator prior to an ambulance arriving, their chances of surviving are much higher. You need to make

sure an ambulance has been called, through 111, that nobody is in danger and that CPR has been started,” he says. CPR means Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, which is an emergency procedure that combines chest compressions with artificial ventilation. “AEDs are for people who have no prior medical
knowledge and they use simple voice instructions, so that anyone can use them safety and effectively. The principals of using an AED are the same, no matter what brand it is. Start by turning the AED on. After that, the most important thing is to keep calm and follow the voice instructions,” he says.
Gareth Jenkin works as a Resuscitation Co-ordinator at Auckland City Hospital and he is also the founder of the Aedlocations. co.nz website, where you can find the locations of all AEDs in NZ. “I suggest people visit it and familiarize themselves with locations close by, for future reference,” says Gareth.

Reservoir Creek’s track looking tidy Bruno Saia The track on the west side of upper Reservoir Creek is looking better this week. The ‘Keep Richmond Beautiful’ group were working last week to maintain it as needed by strengthening edges where rain washes them out. ‘Keep Richmond Beautiful’ working bees have also installed stout rope handrails on two steeper sections to ensure walkers can maintain control when ascending or descending. The track starts by the Reservoir with its nearby information panels, takes walkers to the ancient large Totara and Kahikatea trees and, provides the best view of the 72m tall Barrington Gum on the way. It continues in a loop on the east side above Reservoir Creek, past a Canary Island Pine to reach the Barrington Gum and back down to the Reservoir. The Loop track is a ‘Keep Richmond Beautiful’ project, funded with a Tasman District Council grant last year and supplements the Network Tasman funded trackwork at the Reservoir. The track is a local attraction, provides an hour or so of exercise and provides interesting views of the regenerating bush and those named specimen trees.

We’ve recently been participating in our local elections. We read a lot of differing perspectives when it comes to how our region should be led. Children’s market is a hit in Richmond
Richmond’s Only Dulux Supplier!
Bruno Saia Hundreds of people were introduced to all sorts of products at the Richmond Town Hall on Tuesday. Food, sweets, books, baby items, toys, craftworks… All made and sold by children at the Richmond Library: Youth Makers Market. “I’m selling chocolate, gluten-free brownies, date cakes, cake pops and just normal brownies. I made them all. I went to a cooking class last holiday and I’ve been cooking since then,” says Lauren O’Grady, 10, who lives in Richmond. “My mum came home one day with a flyer about this market and I thought I could sell at it. It’s my first time and it’s really good,” she says. “It’s awesome to see the kids using their creativity and going out there to sell stuff. I found some pretty good stuff,” says Jessica Quinney, who was one of Lauren’s costumers. “I’m selling Russian fudge, peanut butter fudge and I’ve made them myself. It’s my first time selling all of this and also my first market. I think it’s a good experience and actually I enjoy selling stuff,” says Abbie Parker, 11. Bailey O’Malley, 15, illustrated the book ‘It’s Time To Go’, written by local author Carol Duffy about New Zealand native birds. He was selling it with bookmarkers and some of his drawings. “I was at the Richmond Library when I read the banner about the market and I decided to come. It’s going very well,” he says. The Youth Makers Market actually started in September, when Richmond Library offered workshops so the the children could develop their skills.

Bright new offices for Harcourts Richmond in prime location Harcourts Richmond has new owners, with the Platinum Blue team of Chris Harvey and Toby Randall taking over the Richmond office. “It’s an exciting time for the area and we are thrilled to now be a part of the local community,” says Chris. “Harcourts Richmond has been completely refurbished, and we’re very happy with how our new office looks.” The team at Harcourts Richmond are also really pleased with the end result of the refurbishment of the offices on Queen Street. “In November last year Harcourts Platinum Blue Ltd in Nelson purchased the existing Harcourts office in Richmond to bring it into the Platinum Blue franchise,” says business owner/ Principal, Chris Harvey. “We have completely gutted the offices and have revamped to modernise and to present a better customer experience to our clients. The exterior of the building has a cleaner Harcourts branded colour scheme and the new LED

Our team here is almost entirely new, with only one of the original salespeople still working here. Chris says the Harcourts Values are based on four fundamentals ‘people first’ ‘doing the right thing,’ ‘being courageous’ and ‘fun and laughter’ “That’s the culture we have in Nelson and that’s what we have brought out here.” Harcourt Richmond’s vibrant new office is light, modern and functional, “We’ve had a bit of fun in the carpark - instead of staff names on the car parking spaces, we have names like Steve McQueen, Stevie Nicks, Simon Cowell and Bruce Willis – just a bit of fun.”
Call into the new Harcourts Richmond offices at 261 Queen Street in Richmond, and Tracey, right, will be happy to direct you to one of the friendly and knowledgeable team to discuss any real estate queries you have. If you’re in Nelson, Jaid, left, can introduce you to the Nelson team. window cards light up the area outside the office at night. Top notch team Since shifting in last November it’s been ‘all go’ at the new premises with the teams generating a lot of business. “The office houses our residential team, Property Management and both our Top of the South Rural team and Commercial team hot desk at the office,” says Chris. “We have Tracey out the front who has recently relocated from our Nelson office – she is Richmond offices’
fulltime Office Administrator and ‘director of first impressions.” Tracey says, “I’ve only been here for a few weeks and I’m loving it. I really make an effort to talk to people and already have regulars who pop in to say ‘gidday.’ Harcourts Richmond co-owner, Toby Randall says, “purchasing Richmond was a “MUST”, as the office was tired and dated, which is not a true reflection of Harcourts in general, who put so much effort into staying in front of our competition and staying at number one in NZ. For myself and the rural team, 90 percent of our work is in the Tasman area, and Murchison and Golden Bay. Having an easy office in a convenient location where clients can use one of our private parks, not get a ticket and use one of the meeting rooms or go and grab a coffee, is also another huge advantage of the new office. After a few changes, we have a great core team at Harcourts Richmond now, and I’m confident that it will continue to grow and exciting things are on the radar.” “So, we are gradually building up the business and have added new

members to the team and existing salespeople from other businesses which brings a solid base and knowledge with them” says Chris. Now hiring – applications welcome Harcourts Richmond is also currently in recruitment mode, with applications invited from experienced people who may be interested in working at the newly refurbished premises. “We have training programmes set up for new people who are coming into real estate as a career. Harcourts is fortunate to have its own training academy and is the only real estate company in Australasia that is NZQA certified adding great value to those that want to gain their National Certificate in Sales. Caring for the community – The Harcourts Foundation “Over time, our offices and people have generously created a history of giving through sponsoring and
supporting thousands of people in need. Being caring members of our local communities ensures a better quality of life for everyone. When we launched The Harcourts Foundation in 2008, we launched a fundamental and significant part of what the name ‘Harcourts’ stands for in the hearts and minds of the communities around us. The Harcourts Foundation really is at the heart of our core values – people first, doing the right thing, being courageous and fun and laughter. The Harcourts Foundation is the embodiment of what it means to be part of Harcourts.” To date, all funds have been raised by dedicated Harcourts team members and clients through fundraising events, auctions, workplace giving, individual donations or ‘off the top’ donations from sales, giving back an amount from the sale of each property. Over the last 8 years the Foundation has granted over 6 million dollars to the community. “When our agents sell, they contribute
funds,” says Chris. “For example: in response to the recent fires in Nelson and Tasman, the Harcourts Foundation has donated $10,000 to the local community of Wakefield. The monies which will be used towards purchasing a solar power heating system for the local Wakefield Swimming Pool, has been welcomed by the entire community. It is seen as a community owned initiative which because of the fires was not going to be able to remain open for use.” Who can apply for a grant from the Harcourts Foundation? No matter the size of your organisation, the Harcourts Foundation not only gives back to those affected by large scale cataclysmic disasters but to charitable community organisations or assists with helping individuals in need. Grants applications must be requested for a specific event, project or initiative.

Crunch time for Mako Jonty Dine Ten games, ten wins. Few could have scripted a more perfect run for the Tasman Mako in its quest for a maiden Mitre 10 Cup premiership. After going unbeaten in pool play the Mako must now knockout the defending champions Auckland in Blenheim this weekend. However, the big city boys will no doubt still be carrying psychological and physical scars
from the 40-0 drubbing it suffered in Nelson in September. Losing Shannon Frizell to All Black duty early in the season did nothing to halt the momentum of the Mako machine. From there, Tasman were seldom threatened by opposition, easily dispatching the likes of Manawatu, Counties Manukau, Auckland, Northland and Hawke’s Bay. While there were slight stumbles, the Mako repelled brave efforts from North Harbour,

Catchball plays for cancer awareness Bruno Saia
Catchball is an offshoot of volleyball. It is played on a volleyball court but you catch the ball and pass it. It’s easy to learn and fun to play so come and join in next Friday 18 October, at 6pm, at Saxton Stadium. “The Breast Cancer Society has different ways of raising awareness
for breast cancer and the need of prevention by regular checks (self examination and mammography) and one of them is to wear pink for a day. We are going to combine that with the tournament, which is the first day of our season,” says Muriel Ronen, chairperson of the New Zealand Catchball Association. “We ask everybody to wear pink
and it is open to anybody who wants to come along. People can come along and watch. They can come along and try, we’ll just pop them in a team for the night,” says Muriel. “It’s not the regular teams playing, we are mixing people up to make it a fun tournament. If someone likes it, they can come along and join us,” she says.

Tennis clubs rally against cancer Bruno Saia
The festival is about to begin... ARE YOU READY?
Local Tennis Clubs will open their doors to the community on 20 October to provide some fun and also to help an important cause. ‘Rally Against Breast Cancer’ will be held from 10 to 11am, in Richmond, Hope, Upper Moutere and Nelson. At Stoke and Mapua club’s it will run from 12 o’clock to 1pm. It’s only $10 per person and all money raised will be donated to the Breast Cancer Foundation NZ. Katherine Brownlie lives in Richmond, loves tennis, has won her own fight against
breast cancer and has already guaranteed her presence at the Hope Tennis Club for this year’s rally. “What I love about tennis is the combination of exercise, being social and being outside. When I’m playing tennis I find that my mind is clear. I’m focusing on my tennis and I forget everything else that is on my mind. It’s a good release” she says. She’s been playing with her school friends for the last ten years. “We are not competitive. It’s about doing lots of fun games, new combinations every week and little drills. It’s al-
ways different and I enjoy it so much. Because I find myself so focused while I’m doing this, it’s a good way to forget everything else,” says Katherine. “The ‘Kelly Bowater Travel Rally Against Breast Cancer’ is also a great chance to socialise on club courts around the region,” says Ali Telford, Nelson Bays Tennis Association Regional Co-ordinator. No knowledge of tennis is required, and all genders and ages can take part – it’s for the whole family and it’s supporting a wonderful cause. So head on down to your local club and give it a go!
FRI 18 OCT, NELSON CBD 5.30pm - 10pm, Mask Parade & Carnivale 9pm, Pic’s Piki Mai FREE FUN FOR EVERYONE!

Local kid rides for third win at Mini Motocross Bruno Saia Reporter
bruno@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Bailey Harris is an 8-year old boy from Richmond whose favourite sport is motocross, and it’s something he’s been doing since he was five years old. After winning the NZ Mini Motocross Nationals in Hawkes Bay last week, he will accelerate to guarantee his third win at the MTF Nelson Mini Motocross Champs. “Hopefully some of my friends come around and have some good battles and hopefully I can get the hat-trick,” says Bailey. “Riding a motorbike is really fun. It’s a good sport that sometimes can be dangerous. I like it because it’s a really hard sport. Usually, rugby,
soccer, cricket, they are like all sort of basic sports. And not many people ride motocross, so I just wanted to be one of the different people and try something new. I knew how rugby, cricket and soccer was so I thought, ‘why can’t I do something different?”, says the young champ. Fiona Harris is Bailey’s mother and the high costs and his safety are her main concerns. “I think it’s just scary for people to put their kids on a motorbike. And it’s expensive. But I wouldn’t change it for anything,” she says. “We have always taught him that nothing is given to you. He’s done a couple of raffles to raise some money to go to the nationals last year. We go out and get some sponsors who
help us pay for the events. He also goes out, collects and sells the eggs from his chickens to raise some money. If you teach kids that, then they can help out and we are not just going to give him what he wants,” says Fiona. The MTF Nelson Mini Motocross Champs will be held on Saturday 19 (from 10am to 5pm) and Sunday 20 (from 10am to 3pm) at Richmond Park Showgrounds (358 Lower Queen St). It is for children from 4 to 11year olds. Sign-ins are available on Friday 27 October, from 5.30 to 6.30pm at Nelson Motorcycle Centre and on Saturday 28 October, from 8 to 8:45am at the track. Online entries available through www.sporty.co.nz/ viewform/31615.
