Sophisticated scams target elderly Matt McCrorie Reporter

matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Scams are targeting elderly residents in the area, and specialists say that they are becoming more sophisticated by the day. A local woman lost nearly 10k in

an iTunes Gift Card scam. The woman, who was cold-called by an international scammer, was promised a ‘substantial’ lump sum of cash, if she would purchase iTunes vouchers, and send the voucher numbers to the scammer, who could then sell them online.

Age Concern Nelson Tasman Elder Abuse Response Advisor, Mal Drummond, says that scams have become much more sophisticated in recent years. “The scammer would actually phone the store ahead of time, before she went there, to tell them that this person was coming, and

that she was going to be buying iTunes vouchers, but it was all ok, and the scammer claimed to be her granddaughter.” The police became involved after the business, a local supermarket where the woman was purchasing the gift cards from, became suspicious of the volume and fre-

quency of gift cards she was purchasing. “We engaged with her and put a Safety plan around her. But it didn’t stop the scammer.” Mal says that while they suspect the scammer was based overseas,

The piece of land on which the gardens now sit was provided by the Nelson agricultural and pastoral association (a&p) in 1928 to be used for recreation purposes in memorial of Dr Hubert Washbourn. Dr Washbourn was an enthusiastic breeder and importer of jersey cows. I think it’s a great idea to help us celebrate Maori culture.

Yes, it’s a good idea but they should replace an existing holiday like Queen’s birthday. Have a holiday that is more relevant to us, to New Zealand.

Any public holiday is a good thing for hanging out with families, Covid taught me that. It would be great to have an extra chance to spend time with the family.

I don’t think it’s a good idea. We already have enough public holidays.

State housing demand doubles in Tasman Matt McCrorie Demand for state housing has shot up in the Top of the South as well as across the country, nearly doubling in the last two years. The Ministry of Social Development’s housing register shows that as of June 2020, 107 Tasman residents are eligible to move into state housing, with 212 applicants for state housing in Nelson. These figures have nearly doubled in the last two years from 57 eligible for state housing in Tasman in June 2018, and 111 in Nelson. Seven new state houses are being constructed in Richmond at present. Associate housing minister Kris Faafoi was in Richmond last week, visiting the new state houses on D’Arcy Street in Richmond that are due to be finished at the end of the month. Almost 60 new homes are being built by

the Government across the Top of the South as waiting lists for those eligible for state housing hit record levels. Faafoi was joined in Richmond by Labour candidate for Nelson, Rachel Boyack, to look at the houses nearing competition. These are two 1-bedroom and two 2-bedroom homes in D’Arcy St, along with three 2-bedroom homes in Herbert Street. Five two-bedroon units are also under construction in Koromiko Avenue, Stoke. Nationally, the state housing register hit 18,520 in June this year, compared to 8,704 at the same time two years ago. Kris Faafoi acknowledged that there is a huge demand for social housing around the country. “The demand is increasing everywhere, and to get to the point where we can start making a difference and start getting people into homes is one thing, but the quality of those homes and the health and safety of them is very important as well,” he says.

A car was found abandoned by police after a crash in Richmond last week. A police spokesperson said that at about 2.30am on Friday 11 September, Police received a report of a vehicle upside down in a paddock on Salisbury Road Extension. According to police, there was no one in the vehicle, and the occupants had fled the scene before police arrived. Police say that enquiries are currently underway. Photo: Matt McCrorie.

Sophisticated voucher scam targets regions elderly froM pAge 1 they believe there would have been some sort of assistance from someone inside the country. “Even after the police became involved, the scammer continued to ring. Even after the police had spoken to them they continued to call. The money that she’s paid out is gone, she won’t get that back.” “That could be a person’s life savings. It has a significant

impact on people. People who are retired don’t have the ability to just go out and earn more money.” Mal says that these people are victims. “Our focus is on showing the person that they’ve been the victim of the crime rather than them being gullible. It can happen to anyone.” Mal says that he has seen the level of sophistication in scams increase in the five years that he’s been with Age Concern.

“The level of sophistication and determination has really increased. For every thousand ‘get losts’ they get they might get one person who is ready to believe them, and that’s all they need.” Age Concern manager Caroline Budge says that the organisation is working with businesses and concerned residents to try and make everyone aware of the level of sophistication that some of these scams have taken on.

Smaller sections now ok Matt McCrorie

Plans for further housing intensification in the region are a ‘win-win’, according one councillor. Councillor Kit Maling, chair of the Strategy and Policy Committee, says that the TDC’s newly-adopted Intensification Action Plan, which will allow for more townhouses to be built closer together in certain areas in Richmond, Brightwater, and Wakefield, is good news for the region. A plan change three years ago allowed housing intensification in Richmond, and Kit says the new plan will enable those changes to happen in Motueka, Wake-

field, and Brightwater in the future. The action plan considers ways that the council can incentivise the building of smaller, denser dwellings. “Around Richmond you are seeing a lot of bigger old sections, where there is a lot of grass, we are now getting townhouses, like on Croucher Street. It makes a better use of our space,” he says. Kit says that there is a tension that the council has to deal with when it comes to housing and urban sprawl. “We have to provide affordable housing, but we also have to protect productive land. Those two oppose in some ways,” he says.

“Re-engineering within our existing areas makes sense. We have to protect our good land, so if you can develop townhouses in smaller areas, that’s a win-win.” According to the newlyreleased Intensification Action Plan, the Tasman District Council is enabling medium density, not high density that is found in cities like Auckland or Wellington. Around 40 per cent of future demand for housing across Nelson and Tasman will be met by building up and increasing housing density in existing areas rather than building out, the action plan states. Across the Tasman District,

residents over 65 will form 34 per cent of the population by 2043. A council survey taken last year revealed that 40 per cent of residents aged over 65 would prefer a small house, unit, or townhouse in town. Kit says the adoption of the Intensification Action Plan is a step in the right direction. “You can’t change the rules overnight,” he says. Kit also says that housing density can help to fix the region’s transport problem. “If we are more compact, people can walk to where they want to go, or cycle, so there’s less carbon and it keeps our inner towns safe.”

Nelson Matters

There has been a strong negative reaction in Tahunanui to the Labour candidate’s support for adding two lanes along Tahnunanui Drive and Rocks Road for clearways/priority lanes. This is not just an issue for this beachside community. Tahunanui Beach and Rocks Road are iconic Nelson assets that we must protect for future generations. Few cities are blessed with such a beautiful beach in close proximity to the city centre. The soft sand and sheltered Tasman Bay make it one of New Zealand’s best swimming beaches. I confess an emotional connection in that it is here I proposed to my wife Linley. There are evening sunsets where 100’s of Nelso-

nians walk this expansive beach. Other recreation enjoyed on Tahunanui Beach includes kayaking, paddle boarding, wind surfing and kite surfing. The rocky coastline along Rocks Road is as beautiful as the beach. During the April lockdown it was magical to walk, run or bike without hundreds of trucks rumbling past. It is also popular for swimming, fishing and sailing. The rock pools are favourite spots for children discovering marine life. I have been involved in many projects to enhance this coast with the Connolly’s Quay fishing platform, Nelson Yachting Club, Seafarer’s Memorial and Early Settlers Memorial. This

coast is also home for iconic facilities and businesses like Harbour Light Bistro, the Boat House, Styx, the Boat Shed and Guyton’s Fish Shop. These will all be put at risk under this four laning plan. The strongest reaction has come from the many homes and businesses who would have frontage taken under the Public Works Act to accommodate the additional lanes through Tahunanui and also on Waimea Road. There is also a real concern about the loss of on-street parking and the increased difficulty getting in and out of their property with four lanes of traffic. I also have major concerns over safety. Clearways are where

544 Waimea Road, Nelson

during peak hours like 6.30am9.30am and 3.00pm-6.00pm parking is prohibited. The problem is that often cars are mistakenly parked, creating chaos. The Clearway outside the Tahunanui shops a decade ago failed for this reason. NZTA also experimented with priority lanes and clearways on State Highway 1 north of Wellington but they failed. They are now building their inland route, the $1 billion Transmission Gully due for completion next year. There is no question that Nelson and Richmond has growing problems of traffic congestion but sacrificing Tahunanui and Rocks Road is the wrong answer. NZTA says it is the least resilient

option to climate change and it costs $80 million more than the inland route. The Tahunanui Business and Citizens Association have out of concern, organised a public meeting to update residents this Thursday at 7.30pm at the Community Centre. I hope all Nelsonians will oppose this damaging plan for our beach and coast. Tahunanui Beach and Rocks Road are jewels in Nelson’s crown. Four lanes of traffic including thousands of trucks each day will ruin it. The right vision for this area is a boulevard with restrictions on heavy traffic and this space maximised for walking, cycling and coastal recreation. Advt.

Housing market continues to boom Matt McCrorie Reporter

matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz

The property market continues to reach new heights in Tasman, with the region breaking its record when it comes to house sales in August. The Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) released their monthly property report for August last week, which shows that Tasman had its highest sales count in August since records began. House sales in the Tasman region jumped from 66 homes sold in August 2019, to 85 in the same period in 2020. Meanwhile, 105 homes were sold in Nelson during August, a 40 per cent increase year on year, hitting the highest number of sales in August in the last 14 years. REINZ CEO Bindi Norwell says that the number of properties being sold in the district is exceeding the number of new listings on the market. “[This] is likely to be pushing up prices and contributing to the shortage of stock. Most properties have multi offers because of the strong buyer demand and lack of listings,” she says. “The region is still attracting out

of town purchasers who are buying for future planning to move here. The market will continue to be busy with the attractiveness of job and lifestyle options in the area.”

Tall Poppy’s Wendy Pearson says that she has yet to see the property slowdown that was predicted post Covid-19. Photo: Matt McCrorie. Tall Poppy sales consultant Wendy Pearson says that she and her team have yet to see the property slowdown that was predicted for post-Covid. She also says that low interest rates have provided first home buyers with more opportunities than was the case previously.

“The first home buyer level is very active, with first home buyers coming up with a much higher deposit so that they can purchase something over $500,000,” she says. “What I’m also surprised about is that people with money in the bank, when their term deposits are coming up, are buying rental properties, “she says. “And the rental properties that people are buying are new builds, so people are spending around $800,000 to buy rental properties, which is a new thing.” Wendy also says that we are seeing more and more people from around the country moving into this region. “I do think that the weeks that we had in lockdown have had people reassessing and thinking about where they want to be. We can’t get away from the fact that Nelson is a fantastic place to live.” Wendy says she has also seen offers on houses presented in a wide range of price brackets. “Multiple offers are happening across the price brackets which indicates that there simply aren’t enough houses to go around.” “A lot of people are buying new, people are selling while the market is buoyant and going into campervans while they build.”

‘Big risks’ ahead for dam Matt McCrorie While the Waimea Community Dam hit a significant milestone last month with the completion of the culvert, there are still ‘big risks’ ahead for the project. Waimea Water CEO Mike Scott says that the Covid-19 pandemic has presented some significant risks for the project, including getting specialist technicians into the country to operate machinery. Mike says that the project is at ‘the mercy of Wellington.’ “If we don’t get that support to get technicians into the country it will threaten the cost and schedule of the project,” he says. “These guys build spillways around the world, they’re experts, and we need specialists. New Zealand just doesn’t have them, because we haven’t built a dam in 25 years,” Mike says. The technicians are needed for the project in November, but Mike says Waimea Water is struggling to work with central government to get them into the country. “If there is a prolonged delay it will hurt us.” The $129.4m project has already suffered significant de-

lays because of the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown. The culvert, which began diverting the river on September 2, started construction in November 2019 It was meant to be completed in March this year. Mike says that there are still several risks when it comes to geology, with pressures around the plunge pool. Mike says that if the rock found is weak argillite and not sandstone, there would be issues. Tasman mayor Tim King says that he is optimistic and hopes that council will be able to work with central government to get the skilled technicians into the country. “Anything that has the potential to add cost is a concern for us. Both Waimea Water and council have had chats with the government,” Tim says. Tim says that he personally raised the matter with Immigration Minister Kris Faafoi when he was in Nelson last week. A spokesperson from Minister Faafoi’s office said that the Minister was aware of the concerns regarding the Waimea Dam, and “understands that Immigration NZ has engaged with people associated with the project.”

Flu rates plummet during Covid response Jonty Dine An increased vigilance in personal hygiene in the age of Covid-19 has led to a reduction in influenza rates this season. With increased immunisations and improved practices such as wearing masks, the region has been much healthier as a result. Chief Medical Officer at Nelson Marlborough Health, Dr Nick

Baker, says there have been far fewer confirmed cases of influenza in 2020 than in 2019. “The last two hospital admissions we had for flu were in January.” Nick say there have also been less instances of flu and flu-like illnesses in the community. “GP-based influenza-like illness surveillance and testing methods changed in 2020 due to the Covid-19 response. From the more

limited amount of testing done, however, there have been no positive influenza results recorded by GPs.” Nick says the main reasons for this are increased immunisation and public health measures due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Immunisation started much earlier this year as part of the Government’s response to protect people from contracting both in-

fluenza and Covid-19. “It was also a tactical measure to take the pressure off health services, less flu cases mean we could be better prepared for Covid-19.” Associate Health Minister Julie Anne Genter reported that 800,000 more vaccines were distributed compared to 2019. Nick says they achieved the highest-ever level of immunisation across priority groups such as

We want to hear your opinions on what matters to you and your community Interested in business and jobs in a low carbon post Covid-19 world? What is the future going to look like for businesses and jobs? The Covid-19 crisis has certainly shown us that we can change/adapt when we put our minds to it. The problem with climate change is that it is not as immediately threatening as Covid-19, so we tend to be more worried about everyday matters. The effects of climate change on human well-being will be much more severe and longer lasting compared to what we have seen with Covid-19. Some of these impacts are already evident. The Californian fires, increased hurricane activity around the world, local droughts, and the erosion of our coasts threatening our own livelihood are just a few current threats to our livelihoods. The big challenge for current businesses is how to be part of the shift to a low carbon economy. And what opportunities does this shift create for new businesses and jobs? Acting sooner rather than later will allow more time for planning, trialling, and refining new ways of doing things. It will also create opportunities for businesses and jobs. History has proven repeatedly that change, for example in IT or environment, has created more jobs than the number of jobs that were lost. What is exciting is that we see more and more businesses turning their mind to how to transition to a low carbon, more resilient business model. Not only is this fuelled by ethical motivation, it can also be because of the increased costs related to the Emission Trading Scheme, the need for listed companies to disclose financial risks due to climate change, or by us, the environmentally and socially conscious consumer, who increasingly demands low carbon, organic and/or locally made products. The Nelson group “Businesses for Climate Action” is one of those great initiatives that brings business together to measure their footprint, and work on techniques for reducing and offsetting emissions. This group, as well as the Nelson Tasman Climate Forum, is clearly gaining momentum. Both Nelson and Tasman Councils have taken several steps to develop and support initiatives related to climate change. It is up to the community to keep the pressure on. Of course, it will be more of a challenge for some business sectors compared to others, not in the least for local horticulture and farming. There is also a very local reason why we should improve our soil management practices. It is obvious that a lot of our land turns into a dustbowl in the dry summer months. When a rainfall event hits our area a lot of the soil is washed into our waterways. Councils and developers have not been successful in containing sediment from urban development. Planting trees around the Waimea estuary will not achieve enough if we do not stop this soil being discharged into the estuary and clogging up the seafloor, killing the ecosystem. Jan Heijs I have just read your article in Waimea Weekly on Nelson Hospice (Wed 9th September). I was very disappointed to see it was at the end of the paper among the “Sport” pages. And not all readers read through to the sport pages. The Nelson Hospice have done and still do, such wonderful work with every one of their patients. As it says in there, they care about easing pain and allowing a person to live the last weeks, months or years of their life with dignity and respect. Helping them and everyone around them come to terms with this normal part of life. They object to assisted death. We need to fully understand what we are voting on, as this advert says. Yours sincerely, Irene Jolly

Rachel Boyack for Nelson

It was great to host Hon Kris Faafoi MP in Nelson on Wednesday and visit some of our new state houses being built in Richmond. The new homes are warm, dry and affordable and will be a welcome addition to our state housing stock here in Nelson. It was also good to meet with community housing providers and the regions two Mayors to talk about the social housing needs in the region. Labour is the Party that builds state houses. We’ve delivered over 4,000 new public houses since we became Government in 2017 and we’re funding 8,000 new public and transitional homes, which will take the number of new public and transitional houses we’ve provided to around 17,000. We know there is more do to, and as your MP I’ll keep working hard to make sure that warm, dry, affordable homes are a reality for everyone in our community.

Just a thought... Martin Sungchel Oh Reverend, Nelson Tasman Methodist Parish Adjusting is not easy for everyone. You are very fortunate if you don’t need to adjust your life too drastically for this new normal with Covid-19. As a Presbyter I am trying my best to adjust to this. We are encouraging our church members to participate in the weekly Sunday services through Zoom and live streaming through YouTube. This is a very different experience. It is not a comfortable way of attending a church service, especially when some church members are not too familiar with modern technology. But I’m so grateful that we are able to at least do this together, rather than not having any church services at all. We had not thought about nor prepared for having church services through the internet before Covid-19 came into

the picture. It is known by everyone that Sunday services are always held in the church building. We all assumed that this part was unchangeable. But

look at us now, with our congregation attending Sunday services through the internet. Most importantly, it does not mean that our relationship with God has changed. It does not matter where we have the service, God remains the same. Covid-19 has not only affected church services but also many schools and businesses. Compared to our previous ‘normal’ day of life, the way we live now can still be uncomfortable for many. We hoped that

this would be shortterm. Initially, some of us may have thought that we do not need to adjust drastically. But now I am learning that adjustments and being able to adapt is crucial in times like now, especially with the virus not being eliminated and lockdowns being reintroduced. It was challenging to adjust to this new normal that we now live on a day to day basis. However, having to adapt to these new situations has given us the opportunity to learn new skills and grow even further. It was difficult to host a church service through video calling, however now I can comfortably preach and share our services through internet platforms. We will all get through these extraordinary times. We just need to continue to be willing to adjust and adapt with the challenges that come. Even if it’s small adjustments at a time, we will get through this together.

Call in and meet the team at Waimea Richmond Funeral Services: Craig Mills, Lyndsay Pyers, Jacinta Beullens, Karen Wyllie, Linda Mitchell, Andrew Wilson. Richmond Roast House With a year of changes for everyone, the Richmond Roast House is changing too. Higgy has acquired the assets of Mobile Meals. Diversifying in this way is very close to his values and ethics as he knows how valuable the service is to so many in the community and he wants to ensure the community is well looked after. You will often hear him harping on about how the elderly only get remembered once a year, on Anzac Day, and the rest of the year must fend for themselves. But not only that, Higgy wants to support the ladies who worked with M.M by providing them with jobs so they can continue the rapport

they’ve developed with clients. So, the delivery of mobile meals will continue with little change except the preparation and delivery will operate from the Richmond shop. All enquiries can be done either by popping into the shop and chat to Higgy, ringing 5440600 or email garry@richmondroasthouse.co.nz Feedback from the community says that Higgy is making the right move and he hopes you’ll think so, too. Please note; Richmond Roast house will be closed from 21st of September until 5th October for alterations Podiaflex All parts of our bodies require

After all, they are the powerhouse that keeps us upright and moving in the right direction. Podiaflex is a business that focuses on the health of your feet. Patricia Horlemann, owner of Podiaflex, provides services to deal with corns and calluses, dry heels and ingrown toenails. way of ensuring your wishes are adhered to as well as sparing your family or loved ones unnecessary worry about arrangements in their time of grief. There is no age limit. Young or old, the best time to plan is now. Planning leaves nothing to chance and gives you one less thing to worry about. It is also important to realise that once your plan is made you are not locked into it. At Waimea Richmond Funeral Services we are there to help with your questions and concerns. Since the 1920’s the Day family has been assisting the people of Waimea/Richmond with their funerals and our funeral planning offers flexibility to make alterations to the arrangements as circumstances change. Days Funeral Trust is a well-established and reputable trust and your funds are held securely in your name. Waimea Richmond Funeral Services can help you carefully document your wishes and you will receive a copy of your plan. It is important to understand that you are free and able to change the arrangements at a later time if you wish. If the funeral is to be in another town or city, we can arrange for the funeral to be carried out by another New Zealand Independent Funeral Home member. Speak

to the team at Waimea Richmond Funeral Services – here to help with any questions you may have about available options. Earlier this month, there was a good turnout at Club Waimea’s Rubgy Section prizegiving for their tipping competition. Gary Brown (aka Brownie) presented the prizes on the night. L to R: Ladies’ winner – Jenny Heyward (5th overall), 3rd equal was awarded to Craig Burnett (pictured) and Ray Strong. The runner-up prize went to Aidan Barnett, and Barry Highet took home the overall winner’s prize. Members involved in the Rugby Section are mainly Mako’s and Crusaders supporters who attend games and enjoy regular tipping competitions.

Manager’s Snippett Wayne Williams Hi there members. What a strange period of time we are going through at the moment; this only being allowed 100 people at any one time sure is taxing. I guess that because of

no raffles, membership draw, courtesy van, etc., it is encouraging people to stay at home, but I want to thank those who have continued to support the Club through this period, and to let everyone know that things are ticking over, so your Club

remains financially stable and ready to kick back into full life as soon as we can. You will see from adverts in this spread, that your social committee have a great night planned for 7th November, and that they are also wanting to

down for an end-of-season date that should mean most drivers will pencil in a final blast before the off-season rebuild. In fact, the Nelson meeting is inked in for the week before the CTRA Nationals at Ellesmere, giving North Island drivers a second bite at the South Island cherry. Nelson’s meeting is a cash night, sponsored by former open-wheel competitor Landon Dawson from his paint and panel shop, the Collision Centre in Richmond. While Billy Bob’s Hot Rod Emporium is in charge of spectacular trophies for the event, the main lure will be a $3000 winning purse, with prizemoney already totalling $9000 and set to grow as the event catches sponsors’ attention.

The Nelson Speedway Association is still coming up with new ways and means to add value to their season calendar, with the Sunshine Classic announced for April. Set down for Nelson’s final meeting of the new campaign on April 17. the Collision Centre Sunshine Classic is a standalone sprintcar event that organisers expect to become a must-do for competitors along the lines of the Gold Cup (sprintcars) or the superstock class features, the Battle of the Stocks and the PTS Superstock Stampede. Rather than try to piggyback off a national event, the Collision Centre Sunshine Classic has been set

Concept Wardrobes and Joinery are the people to come to for anything related to renewing or designing a wardrobe but their skills and craftmanship goes way beyond wardrobes. They are also masters at designed kitchens and bathrooms and any storage requirement for home or commercial properties. Dave Gibb is the director of the Nelson-based Concept Wardrobes and Joinery and has many years of experience in the joinery trade. Twenty five of those years Dave has spent in the wardrobe industry specifically. Dave, Jackie and the team’s experience, skills and sound customer service will assist customers to find solutions for all their wardrobe, closet, and storage needs. As well as meeting the needs associated with a new kitchen or bathroom. If there’s a project that you’ve been thinking about, a walk-in wardrobe, perhaps a new kitchen, or even some kind of storage for the home office – chat with Dave or Jackie and that project can start to become a reality. Whatever joinery project it is, Dave

and the team can help. They’ll help you throughout every step of the process from concept through to installation. Beginning with what the options are to meet each individual’s needs and using storage solutions available, they then design, draw plans and provide a quote. They will talk with you about your design and once finalised the process is completed with your made-to measure joinery being professionally installed. No idea where to begin? Call into their showroom or phone for an inhome quote. The showroom includes display wardrobes (and soon to be fitted new kitchen joinery), as well as all the options from pull-out shoe-racks and baskets, to drawers and handle options, a range of colours to match decors and many varieties of materials for benchtops and vanities besides. Mix and match between the quality materials available to achieve the perfect result for you and your current décor and environment. The showroom is at 97 Pascoe Street, Annesbrook. Ph. 03 544 1420.

Juniors in the spotlight

Wanderers juniors took centre stage over the weekend as the hectic 2020 season entered the final stretch. Ants Holder and Brett Woodwiss both devote enormous time to the under-13 team, which is currently playing an open, expansive style of rugby with a number of exciting young players making good progress during the abbreviated season. A special feature of this team is the standard displayed regularly by the three girls, Maddie Greenaway, Makenna Holland and Jaymee Clements in her first year of rugby. The team played against a very competitive Stoke team on Friday night at Lord Rutherford Park in Brightwater. In another controlled display, Wanderers struggled early against the determined Stoke side, lead by Brecon JeffsBerry and Luca Austin, who both played well with good straight running. The game ended in a well-deserved victory to the host side. On Saturday morning, again at Lord Rutherford Park,

Wanderers player Tait Best looks to shrug off a tackle during his teams 47-20 under-11 win over Stoke White. Photo: Supplied. coaches Aaron Best and Daniel Kidson had the Wanderers under-11 team against Stoke with a similar outcome to the previous evening. On Saturday, Wanderers under-14 did battle against Nelson College Argentina at Lord Rutherford Park, bouncing back well from a loss last week. A win, 28-19, with Hamish Jolly absolutely outstanding, Captain James Strang was another to excel, as always,

enabling Nathan Downey to score twice, with Dylan Reid and Leroy Max dotting down also. Leroy’s try was an excellent catch and drive following a lineout. The under-12 team, coached by Hamish Matthews and Mike Willoughby, hosted Takaka. Courageous tackling, drawing and passing, as well as off-loading were behind a satisfying but narrow victory. A cracking day for rugby with one of the Wanderers

U10 rising Stars, Tevita Laloni, taking the captain’s role against his old team WOB White. Wanderers had been working hard all season on moving the ball away from the ruck and off-loading at the point of contact. This caught WOB by surprise and the team ran in some quick tries through James Mollett and Viliami Holani. WOB came back into the game after an initial flurry of tries and got to work with some of their big men charging up the middle. Some committed defence from Lee Eggers and Josef Houghton got them to the floor and some great strength shown by Zac Kitto and Ezra Laumanu at the ruck saw Wanderers back on the attack, with some sensational off-loads from Kyle Powell putting Charlie Kempthorne in some wide open space and stretching his legs for the corner. Wanderers bounced back quickly with some excellent work by Carlos Thompson.

Busy weekend for Richmond Athletic It was another week of close games and missed chances. The Fresh Choice Richmond 2nd team went down 3-1 to Motueka, the Sprig and Fern Upper Queen Street side lost a close game 2-1 to FC Nelson in the masters division. The Global Wings Travel Hornbills came from behind in their 3rd division match against FC Nelson Locomotive to snatch a 4-2 win, and the Tasman Auto Electrics had a 1-0 win over Wakefield. The Thompson Daly Chartered Accountants Thistle side had a bye. Hothouse Creative Foxes were too strong for their Motueka opponents, eventually finishing the game 9-1 winners. Fresh Choice Richmond 1st team conceded a late penalty to lose their game against Nelson Suburbs 2-1. Gritty Waimea hold on for victory Jacob Page Waimea Combined completed their UC Championship round-robin campaign with a gritty 27-24 win over St Thomas of Canterbury in Christchurch. The result means they finish in 10th with six wins and seven losses. It is also likely the last game in charge for coach James Lash, who has been part of the coaching staff for the past five years. “When you look at the season, it has been a success,” James

says. “We wanted top eight but didn’t quite get there, but we’ve beaten some really good schools and we’ve been competitive throughout.” Nine of the squad will return next year which will mean some rebuilding for the new coach. “We were on their line early but couldn’t crack it and then they scored which was a little deflating, but we kept persisting. While Waimea trailed 12-7 at halftime, they turned with the wind at their backs for the sec-

ond half. They were able to use the boot of Macca Springer to control territory and force St Thomas to run it from deep in their half. “St Thomas didn’t have the same kicking game we had and we were able to exploit it and come back and hold our nerve.” James says there is talk of a tri series between themselves, Marlborough Boys and Nelson College. But if that was the end of the season, it was a great performance to finish with.

Seasons start! Dominik Berghamer Spring is here and the water is finally getting warmer. 14 degrees is still not a lot and the snapper are probably another month away from coming into the bay. The fishing reports from around D’Urville Island indicate that less fish are being caught which could mean that some snapper are on the move already. The fishing in the bay (I tried from the shallows out to 45 metres) is still the same: vast amounts of spiny dogs and some gurnard in between. Large schools of baitfish of all sizes attract dolphins, seals and birds alike – just no other fish. Off the lighthouse huge schools of yellow eyed mullets turn the water brown since several weeks, they are either feasting on the larvae of another species or spawning themselves. Mullets make great bait and – if you can’t catch any other decent fish – you can even eat them, they are quite tasty! The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club season starts on the 1st of October and we would like to invite everybody to our Open Day on Sunday the 20th of Sep-

16 SEPTEMBER 2020

Speed limit changes Following the public consultation that was carried out earlier this year, the following approved speed limit changes will come into effect from Monday 21 September.

This week is Māori Language Week and there are some simple things we can all do to help everyone enjoy and appreciate te reo Māori. • Learn to correctly pronounce Māori words – especially colleagues with Māori names or the name of the city/town you live in! Getting the vowels right is key, so focus on these first. Practice saying words out loud and slowly to yourself – try doing this for Māori place names or street signs you see around. • Watch Māori TV or listen to Māori radio stations to familiarise yourself with the sound of te reo. • Make te reo Māori visible in your workplace. Look at signage at work that could benefit from being translated into te reo Māori. Refer to tetaurawhiri.govt.nz for resources to support you. • Encourage all kaimahi (workers) in your office to incorporate te reo Māori words into their everyday mahi (work) e.g. “Great hui (meeting) today.” “What’s the kaupapa (topic) for our meeting?” or “Where’s the miraka (milk)?” • Participate in events in your city that celebrate te reo Māori.

• Hoddy Road – reduced to 40km/h for the full length of road.

Free outdoor movie night Friday 25 September 2020, Washbourn Gardens, Richmond. Food trucks open and fun family activities from 6.00 pm. Movie begins at 7.00pm. Come along and enjoy Aladdin, starring Will Smith. Get your magic carpets ready for a beautiful journey to Agrabah! For more information visit tasman.govt. nz/events. Please note: this event will only go ahead provided we are at Alert Level One at the time.

We’re holding a Youth Music Festival on Wednesday 4 November at Washbourn Gardens in Richmond. We know there are lots of talented young people in our region and this is a chance for everyone to come together and celebrate their skills. We’d love to hear from all young musicians (bands and solo performers) who want to take part by Sunday 4 October. Get more details online at tasmanyouthhub.co.nz or text 027 256 9630 to add your name to the line-up.

• 21 September, 10.00 am – 11.30 am, Scamming Information Session with Elder Abuse advisor Mal Drummond and Kyle Abbott from NZ Police • 28 September, 10.00 am – 11.30 am, Budgeting/ Money workshop with Lisa Dyer from Nelson Budgeting Service

• Wash your hands • Sneeze and cough into your elbow • Keep track of where you’ve been and who you’ve seen • Wear a face covering in situations when maintaining distancing is difficult.

Water safety consultation extended Submissions are now open until 2 October. We’ve extended the submission period on a proposal to permanently chlorinate the following water supplies: Upper Tākaka, Hamama, Motueka, Riwaka/Kaiteriteri and Richmond. You can read the full statement of proposal online at tasman.govt.nz/feedback or see a hard copy at all Tasman District Council offices and libraries (Tākaka, Murchison, Motueka and Richmond).

• Tasman District Council Chamber, 189 Queen Street, Richmond. Wednesday 23 September, 4.30 pm to 6.30 pm.

Review of Local Alcohol Policy Submissions are invited until 25 September on a proposal to review the Local Alcohol Policy. The Local Alcohol Policy (LAP) has been in force since 14 March 2015 and must be reviewed prior to 14 March 2021 to remain in force. The Council has proposed that no change is made to the existing LAP. You can read the full statement of proposal online at tasman.govt.nz/feedback or see a hard copy at all Council offices and libraries. You can:

The next funding round closes on 31 October 2020. Head to tasman.govt.nz/link/grants to check out the funding guidelines and complete and application form.
