It’ll see no more sea A 1942 40mm Bofors gun, or anti-aircraft gun, has found its final resting place in Brightwater. Although the history of the gun is a little unclear, it was lost off the HMNZS Southland, a Leanderclass Frigate. Originally commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1963 with the name HMS Dido, in 1975 the
ship was used to make the television series “Warship”. For the series the pennant number was changed to F42 and the ship renamed the HMS Hero. The HMS Dido was transferred to the Royal New Zealand Navy and renamed the Southland and commissioned into naval service December 1983. The Southland

to the Southland, the Brightwater gun’s building date of 1942 would suggest that before it was fitted it more than likely was used during WW2. With a range of five kilometres it was a very accurate weapon and in the hands of a skilled operator was effective against aircraft attacking ships. Brightwater gun shop “Kelly

Kelly Country has it as a touchable display and with the shop open five days a week, Thursday to Monday, there is plenty of time to go and have a look for yourself.

Disappearing roadside crosses Judene Edgar Reporter
judene@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Roadside crosses on the cnr of State Hwy 6 and River Terrace Rd in Brightwater for two teens killed in an accident, February 1999.
Roadside memorial crosses along State Hwy 6 in Wakefield and Kohatu, and State Hwy 65 near Maruia Falls have disappeared. Lakes/Murchison ward councillor Stuart Bryant says that he is saddened to hear that people have been removing the memorials. “Roadside crosses are both a memorial, and a message to others,” Stuart says. “They have huge sentimental value for the families and friends who put them there, so people need to show respect.” He hopes that the person or people responsible for the removal of the memorials will return them.
Concerns have been raised across the country when the New Zealand Transport Agency has removed memorials, but top of the south manager Frank Porter says, “it certainly hasn’t been us that’s removed them.” He says that while he understands the desire of families to commemorate loved ones lost in road crashes, roadside memorials can be a distraction for other drivers. “We are always happy to help families install crosses to ensure this can be done safely,” he says. Frank says guidelines were put in place in 2013 for the erection, maintenance and removal of white crosses at fatal accident sites on state highways. “The Transport Agency allows families and friends of people
who have died on our roads to install white crosses at or near crash sites where it can be done safely and without creating a distraction or hazard for other drivers, particularly in high-speed environments,” he says. “For this reason, crosses are not permitted on motorways where stopping is not allowed.” Frank says he is also aware of at least one instance where a cross has been stolen and of the distress it caused the family. In accordance with the guidelines, the agency may have a cross removed or relocated if it falls into a state of disrepair, is considered that it will impede road maintenance, is located in a position whereby it could contribute to an accident, or
ginning
the accident site has been significantly reconstructed. Tasman District Council transportation manager Jamie McPherson says that council also permits small roadside memorials “if the memorial does not pose a safety risk or impinge on private property; and is not a safety risk to those who stop to visit, or to other road users while visitors to the memorial are stopped, then we generally don’t have an issue.” “We try and work with the family to ensure that there won’t be any safety concerns to try and avoid having to move a memorial, which can be very distressing,” Jamie says. “A lot of people visit the memorials regularly and lay flowers, so it needs to be safe for everyone.”

Trolley Derby organiser Tim Bayley has announced the Trolley Derby won’t go ahead on Collingwood St this year after a lack of sponsorship and organisers. Photo: Charles Anderson.
Trolley Derby finished? Charles Anderson It has been a rite of passage for countless parents, children and spectators, even inspiring its very own feature film, but the Nelson Trolley Derby seems to have stalled with no sponsors or organisers willing to step up to make the iconic event happen. Organiser Tim Bayley, who helped form the Trolley Club which revived the derby in 2002, says it was disappointing that it had come to this. “No one has come on board to run it and no one has come on board to finance it. There was a lack of interest last year from corporates, they all just faded away.” Tim has organised it for many years but says the event “takes its toll” and it was time for him
to step down. It needs about $15,000 to run the event which goes towards safety gear, haybales, resource consent, radios and announcing equipment for the day. “It’s not a simple, cheap little thing.” It has had several sponsors in recent history, but all have moved on. “Finding someone else is that hard thing. We have a committee, but everyone is really busy these days. Most have their own companies and kids.” Tim says it’s a “rite of passage for kids and parents”. Tim says the club was looking at holding an event in Richmond to celebrate the opening of Queen St but that had been pushed back. “It would have been good; Queen St is not very steep but

it would be just for kids and a bit of fun.” But by the time Queen St is fully open it will be heading into winter. The event had its origins in the 1960s and came and went a few times over the years before having an unbroken run of 16 years since 2002. It also inspired the 2012 feature film Kiwi Flyer with Nelson-born director Tony Simpson basing his tale of a family’s triumphs and tribulations around the event. The movie was shot in and around Nelson, too. Tim hopes that the Collingwood St event hasn’t been counted out completely. “It really need a pro organiser who wants to do it for free, which is a big ask as it’s a lot of work.”

Delivering Twelfth Night on the twelfth Nelson Summer Shakespeare’s 2018 production of Twelfth Night had a delayed opening night thanks to Nelson’s unseasonably wet weather. Originally scheduled to open on January 11 at Fairfield House Meadow, it opened at its newly-found wet weather venue, the Granary, at Founders Park, on January 12 to rave reviews. The play runs from January 11 to 28, but the wet weather means director Giles Burton is needing to make a call daily as to which venue to hold it at. “The cast are good enough to change their performance with each venue, which is a real treat to see,” he says. The indoor venue seemed tailormade for the production and a crowd of around 100 people came on opening night to enjoy a great night of live theatre. However, Sunday and Monday’s sunshine meant outdoor performances with almost 300 turning up each night. “It was fantastic to see it out in the open air where it was designed and directed to be,” says Giles. Shakespeare’s tale of tempest-tossed twins washed ashore in a land of excess — excess of love, of wine, of ego, of melancholy — is arguably his greatest comedy. Twins Viola and Sebastian are separately rescued from a shipwreck, each believing the other has drowned. What ensues is a comedic journey through love, lust, disguises, plots and counter plots.
Feste the fool (Georgia Chapple, centre) serenades Sir Andrew Aguecheek (Saul Richard, left) and Sir Toby Belch (Anton Bentley, right), with the conniving Maria (Lisa Allan) looking on. Photo: Supplied. The play is full of dark, comedic and sometimes bawdy one-liners that have the audience laughing throughout. Giles has assembled a cast par excellence. Seasoned professionals Daniel
and Lisa Allan, Laura Irish, Tami Mansfield and Anton Bentley are joined by talented youngsters Dan Merry and Dylan Hutton, along with Saul Richard and Georgia Chapple who combine their acting talents with their musical skills. Daniel Allan, who took on the dual roles of Malvolio and Duke Orsino, was a clear crowd favourite. His portrayal of the prissy, pompous and puritanical Malvolio was the perfect patsy for the tricks of

the drunken fools, Sir Andrew Aguecheek (Saul Richard), the aptly named Sir Toby Belch (Anton Bentley), and his conniving lady-friend Maria (Lisa Allan). Anton’s hedonistic Sir Toby was a joy to watch as was Saul’s Sir Andrew, who gets to deliver one of the great one-liners: ‘But I am a great eater of beef, and I believe that does harm to my wit’. Feste, the fool, played with a sense of merry mischief by Georgia Chapple, gets to close
out the show with a somewhat apt song with the line: ‘for the rain it raineth every day’. But with a wet weather venue in place, the show goes on. Twelfth Night is at 6.30pm from January 11 to 20 in Nelson, January 25 and 26 at Washbourn Gardens and January 27 and 28 at Riverside Community. Go to the ‘Nelson Summer Shakespeare’ FB page or nelsonshakespeare.nz from 2pm each day for venue notifications.

It’s a wet and wild summer indoors Judene Edgar It might have been wet and wild outside, but it was also wet and wild inside the Richmond Aquatic Centre during their water safety programme last week. The three, free, weeklong Wet and Wild programmes offer a balance of fun, safety and confidence-building so that young people are safe in and around our beaches, rivers, pools and out on boats, kayaks and paddleboards. “We love our water sports, but kids need
to learn not just how to swim, but how to be safe in and around our waterways,” says coordinator Lisa Stove. “They get to learn about life jackets, boat safety, the challenges of swimming with your clothes on, rescues and CPR.” Lisa says that in addition to water and river safety, kids get to test their skill and dexterity on the obstacle course and have a go at water activities such as flipper ball, surf paddling, aqua boxing and snorkelling. 14-year-old Kane Smith, who enjoys swimming
up the Aniseed Valley, says that it’s been good to learn about river safety, as well as being lots of fun. Kane was determined to beat the alltime record score of four seconds to complete the obstacle course, but unfortunately his best score was a nail-biting one second off. However, Nathan Crawford, 11, was more focussed on style over speed, and Sophie Watson, also 11, says that she was just happy to complete the course. “It not about the time, it’s more about finishing it,”
she says. Sophie’s greatest challenge this week was diving into the pool fully dressed. “Especially having longsleeved clothes on made it really hard,” she says. Thanks to funding from the Ministry of Social Development the programme is free, although spaces are limited. It runs Monday to Friday, 9am to 1pm and is open to all 11 to 17-year olds. There are a few spaces left next week, so go to clmnz.co.nz/richmond/ 11-year-old Nathan Crawford chooses style over speed navigatnews/ for more details or ing the giant obstacle course during the Wet and Wild Challenge at the Richmond Aquatic Centre last week. Serving up a blackcurrant bounty Judene Edgar Reporter
judene@waimeaweekly.co.nz
The iconic Sarau Festival is getting ready to serve up your daily dose of vitamin C alongside live music, stalls, and kids activities at this year’s annual blackcurrant festival. Started in 2008, the twilight festival was created to celebrate the local blackcurrant harvest. Home to around 350 hectares of blackcurrants, the Moutere Valley is one of two major growing regions in the country. Over the past 10 years the country-style market has grown to become one of the region’s most popular festivals, attracting thousands of people each year thanks to its welcoming atmosphere. “We offer high quality entertainment, a relaxed and happy atmosphere, and lots of fun for the children,” says organiser Jenny Leith. “Sometimes finding food for children can be hard at events, so new to the kids’ area this year will be the Country Kids café, providing a variety of yummy
treats appealing specifically to the younger festival goers.” The kids zone and animal farm are always a popular feature along with old favourites the climbing wall, bouncy castle and large slide, and adding to the fun this year is the new “wipeout” attraction. Once you’ve finished looking at the 100 stalls on offer, back again this year is the Chill Out Zone for people who simply want to sit and relax. With couches, chairs, bean bags and a variety of backyard games, Jenny says that it’s the perfect area to have some time out. And, of course, blackcurrants are the centrepiece of the harvest festival, with the popular cooking demonstration with guest chef Miles Drewery and the cooking competitions. “It’s always interesting what people come up with based on blackcurrants,” says cooking competition coorganiser Heather Marr. “We’ve had blackcurrant vinegar, chocolate, blackcurrant and venison pies, and even blackcurrant beer – which was really very
good.” There are seven categories, with a new category this year challenging foodies to use any Barkers product. Heather and fellow cooking competition organiser Tanya Doty say that they are getting more entries from children each year, possibly due to the increasing popularity of baking shows. However, the competition isn’t limited to the cooks. “It can be quite hotly contested as to who the judges are, as people are quite keen to try all the exciting new dishes people come up with,” says Tanya. But the food isn’t just for judging. Jenny says there’s some wonderful food, juice, wine and beer available as well as blackcurrant desserts, so people can have a delicious meal while listening to the music from Cover Me, A Few Deadbeets, Ceol River, Kath Bee and Nelson Sunbassadors. The Sarau Festival is on Sunday, January 28, from 3pm at Moutere Hills Community Centre. Entry fee is only $5 per adult. For full details go to saraufestival. co.nz.

Extreme is the new normal Judene Edgar
The weather is usually little more than the subject of small talk, but changes in normal weather patterns has seen it increasingly become headline news with drought, floods, record temperatures, king tides and strong gusts all featuring. A week ago, NIWA released their annual climate summary with Richmond recording the highest number of sunshine hours for 2017. The celebration was shortlived, as rain has continued to drench the region ever since. However, the rain wasn’t all bad news as it broke the drought and, with more wet weather forecast, both Tasman and Nelson councils have now lifted all water restrictions. In introducing the report, NIWA’s principal scientist of forecasting, Chris Brandolino, says that “the theme for 2017 was extremes”. In addition to several extreme events across New Zealand, “46 locations recorded record or near record April rainfall.” “As we look towards June, this is the other end of the spectrum. We had 21 locations … that had either near record or record low rainfall; so a lot of extremes going
Former Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment Dr Morgan Williams. Photo: Judene Edgar. on just within six months across the country.” The year also ended with the second warmest December on record with 90 locations where the mean temperatures were either record or near record and 38 locations observing record high mean temperatures. Former Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, Dr
Morgan Williams, is an ecologist who has focused on sustainability throughout his career and now lives in Hope. Raised on a dairy farm in Kaiapoi, he has held research, policy and leadership positions in organisations within New Zealand and overseas. Morgan’s interest in climate change goes back nearly 30 years, researching the potential effects
of climate change on farmers and growers while working for the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. Morgan says that not only has it been a year of extremes but a decade of increasing extremes. “It’s not new, but the weather patterns are reinforcing these variations and changes,” he says. “It’s like a tide that’s been rising
now for most of the industrial age, but accelerated over the past 40 years and even more so in the last 10.” For regions such as Nelson Tasman that rely on primary production, Morgan says a key issue is the storage and supply of water, but that the consequences of risks that are slow moving are often not well understood. “Storage systems are about the ability to manage risk for all communities,” he says. Morgan says that the extremes of weather we’re now seeing, particularly rain bombs and droughts at key production times, can be critical to crops. “When you go into deep droughts over a relatively short space, you can have a lot of damage.” And while the current rain has eased the very dry soil moisture levels brought about by the dry December conditions, and residential restrictions have been lifted, such events are now “the new normal”. Morgan also points to the recent residential water supply crisis in Napier. “We all expect access to water every day and we all need access to it every day, but you can’t deliver what you don’t have.”

Marty’s keeping our community safe Judene Edgar
Marty Price spent his two weeks of holidays volunteering for the Richmond Community Patrol, which is just one of the reasons why he’s the winner of this month’s Stihl Shop Richmond Good Sorts award. “When I heard about the award I thought, that’s a fantastic way to recognise people doing things in the community,” says Marty. “To be honest, I was gobsmacked when I was told I’d won it.” Nominator, AMI branch manager Graeme Duncan, says that Marty spends an extensive amount of time volunteering for our local community. “He wears several hats, including some sports coaching and coordination ones, but we’d like to see him recognised for the work he puts into the local Richmond Community Patrol,” says Graeme. “As well as being the Tasman District coordinator, Marty trains new recruits and gets out and about on patrol himself, along with spending time getting around the community spreading the word.”
........
.........................................
The Richmond Community Patrol celebrated their 10th birthday last year, and Graeme says that Marty deserves a good deal of the credit for how well it’s doing. On top of this, Marty is also the coordinator for Waimea Neighbourhood Support. “He’s generally never too far from the Richmond Police Station, but for good reasons, rest assured,” Graeme laughs. Richmond Community Patrol coordinator Mike Gill, says that Marty is a very worthwhile recipient. “It couldn’t have gone to a more deserving bloke,” says Mike. Marty is also the Nelson field worker for the Muscular Dystrophy Associatio and has been a wheelchair basketball volunteer for 15 years. People can nominate anyone from the Waimea Weekly’s distribution area for the monthly Stihl Shop Richmond Good Sort award by emailing editorial@waimeaweekly. co.nz. The email needs to explain why the nominee deserves to win and include contact details so we can publish a story and photo of the winner in the Waimea Weekly.

No excuse for using plastic bags Judene Edgar Richmond Hospice Shop are hoping to eliminate the use of plastic bags thanks to a bit of ingenuity, a bit of creativity and a lot of dedication from volunteer seamstress Cheryl Gascoigne. Shop manager Karen Mackenzie-Howe says that with the growing awareness of the need to reduce or avoid the use of plastic bags, “there was no excuse for us using plastic bags”. “But I knew we needed to offer people an alternative,” says Karen. She started looking into options, but says that it didn’t take long to realise that they were perfectly positioned to make their own reusable fabric bags. The store receives donations of curtains, duvet covers, tablecloths and other fabrics and has a sewing machine. All they needed was someone to get the project up and running. Cheryl, who has volunteered at the Hospice store since it opened eight years ago, is a keen embroiderer and quilt-
“Every dollar we raise goes to support the Hospice – I can’t emphasise that enough,” she implores. Karen says that it’s a win:win, because it’s raising money for Hospice and “if people pay for it, they’re more likely to keep it and re-use it”. Anyone interested in helping create reusable cloth bags for any of the Hospice stores can contact Rebecca Colley, head of volunteer services on ph. 546 3912.

Despite being reluctant at first, her eagerness to see the project up-and-running soon saw her leading the charge. “We’re proud of the work we do here, and we strive for quality,” says Cheryl. Cheryl estimates that she’s made around 50 sample bags, but Karen says, “they’re
selling like hot cakes”. In fact, they’ve become so popular Cheryl says that she can no longer keep up with the demand, and is looking for some more volunteers to help. “We have a lot of fabric, but getting extra people sewing is the key,” she says. “All they need is a sewing
machine that does a straight stitch and a zig zag – they don’t even need to come into the store, they might like to make them at home.” They currently offer two different styles with long and short handles, and Cheryl is creating a simple pattern to make it easy for other people to be able to help.

Got some news? Waimea Weekly Phone us on 544 9037 Locally Owned and Operated
The wet weather isn’t all bad news with the recent rainfall boosting the region’s rivers and favourite fishing holes making fishing easier again. Also making fishing easier for junior anglers is the release of 200 rainbow trout into the popular Waimea River Park fishing ponds last week. Fish and Game field officer Lawson Davey says that many of the remaining trout within the ponds were getting pretty cagey and difficult to catch, so the influx of new naive fish will be welcomed by junior anglers. Developed with the aim of introducing young anglers to the joys of fishing in a natural setting, Fish and Game officer Jacob Lucas says that the fishing ponds are now well-stocked making trout “pretty catchable”. “There are lots of four to fivepound rainbow trout in the ponds making it easier for families and kids,” says Jacob. “A lot of kids get fishing lines for Christmas, so it’s a great opportunity for parents to get out with their kids and take them fishing.” “Mornings or evenings are the best times, when the water temperature is cooler,” he adds. While the ponds are only open to junior anglers, Jacob says that there are also some good options further afield for adult

The Lake Argyle fishery has proved a popular spot over the holiday season, so Fish and Game have released 200 rainbow trout there also. And thanks to Henderson’s sport store in Blenheim, there is the opportunity to win a $500 voucher along with one of four full-season fishing licence
giveaways, should the right tag number be returned to Fish and Game. Jacob says that while plenty of tagged fish have been caught over the holiday period, so far no-one has struck the jackpot. A fishing license is required for both the Waimea River Park fishing ponds and the Lake Argyle fishery. These are available online or from any sports store. Go to fishandgame.org. nz/licences/ for information.

Squash Juniors on the rise
Members of Nelson Bays Harmony Chorus perform at Nelson Airport, welcoming visitors to the region.
Harmony Chorus open night Nelson Bays Harmony Chorus wants to give more women the opportunity to come and join their group, which is why they’re holding an opening night on Thursday, February 15. On the night, the group will start learning Adele’s popular song Rolling in the Deep, with people welcome to return over the following few weeks to learn the whole song with Harmony Chorus.
The group sings four part, a capella harmony and offers brilliant opportunities to engage in top level vocal training. Each week they have their own in house vocal development, as well as national education classes and visits from international coaches. The group strives for excellent singing and when all four parts align to make a chord ‘ring’, it gives everyone a real
buzz. Nelson Bays Harmony Chorus is also invited to sing around the district, including their recent performance at the airport, welcoming Christmas travellers to Nelson. For more information on the open night, which will be held at Club Waimea from 7pm, contact Jenny on 547 4354 or visit the group’s website at www.nelsonharmony. org.nz.
Membership draw winner Thursday, January 4, saw a huge crowd at Club Waimea for the membership draw, with one very lucky Barry Clark getting his number drawn out to pick up the $2000 prize. Barry was reluctant to have his photo taken, but then referred to his debentures with the club back in 1971, as shown in the photo. The photo was taken, with a small joke about the fact that the cheque manager Wayne just handed him was probably worth about the same as the $50 in debentures he held in 1971.
Two local juniors from Club Waimea Squash, Henry Aitken and Liam Gale, have a big year ahead of them. Both players have been selected by the NZ Junior Squash Development team to attend Junior National Training Squads, to be held in Auckland. Henry and Liam will attend four intensive weekend training camps throughout the year, and are required to attend four national tournaments throughout 2018. Baby Space Why do you only provide for children up to three? Children of this age have specific physical, emotional and social needs. These are best met in an environment that is secure and predictable while still flexible enough to offer the challenges they need to build and practice new skills. BabySpace is very well-resourced and has a stable team of trained teachers who get to know the children and their families very well. What are the children actually learning? At this age we see big changes in the children’s sense of autonomy. This grow-
ing independence comes as they develop physical and verbal skills, and increasing social competencies. Our carefully chosen resources, safe environment and small group size support the children to fulfill their learning potential. What advice do you have for parents looking for a centre? Quality early childhood education is closely linked to small group size, positive relationships between children and the adults in the centre, and a low turnover of staff. Parents are welcome to visit Lynda and the team or see www.babys pacenelson.co.nz.
Anne Michelle What is Electrolysis? Electrolysis works by treating the hair germ cells in the hair follicle and shutting the blood supply at the hair root. It involves a course of treatments done on a regular basis; the number of treatments depends on how much hair is to be removed and how quickly you want it gone. What are my alternatives? Clipping with scissors, hair removal cream and shaving are your best temporary hair removal methods. Electrolysis treatments are tailored to your requirements for permanence.
How long does it take? There are many factors which can affect how long it will take to reach permanency. The importance of regularity of treatments does affect how long it takes to achieve your permanence. Does it hurt? I do have several forms of numbing available. There is a warming sensation involved, less than tweezing a hair. I am proficient in different methods and will find a level that is comfortable for you. For more information on electrolysis and how it can help you say goodbye to unwanted hair, contact Anne Michelle today.

Animal Farm Who are we? David and Vicky Pattinson, we’re Kiwis who emigrated to the UK in 2000 without two young boys. In 2011 we returned to our favourite home, Nelson, to develop the farm park. After much hard work, we opened the doors on March 1, 2015. We have a 10-year vision for the farm park and are constantly improving and developing the 17-hectare site. We’re also lucky to have a great team of staff who love sharing their knowledge and love of animals with our visitors. Why did we set up Animal Farm?
BOOK NOW We believe that children need opportunities to experience the joy of bonding with farm animals and that families need quality time together, away from digital and electronic devices. The conservation of rare breed farm animals is also important to us, especially New Zealand rare breeds. What makes Animal Farm different? Our animals are 100 per cent healthy, happy and very friendly. They reside in generous sized paddocks, in a natural farm setting and we offer a number of hands-on animal experiences for visitors throughout the day. Please contact us if you’d like more information, or to arrange a visit.

EED!! !! ! !! Gas Stays
Can all gas stays be re-gassed? A gas stay is the small mechanical device that lifts and holds open your car boot, boat hatch or toolbox lid, to name a few uses. Most stays can be re-gassed. Stays need to be in good enough condition for re-gassing (oil inside), some stays will not take more pressure. The seals cannot be replaced as the stay is swaged at assembly, if a seal has blown then we can supply a new stay. How long does it take to re-gas? We offer a 24-hr turn-around service on re-gassing for most stays. Call in and we
remove the gas stays to check condition for re-gas, you can then take your car away and come back the following day to have them refitted. How long do new stays last vs re-gassing? It depends on the application and use, but we find new stays generally last between 10-15 years. Re-gassing won’t last as long however, we check them before re-gassing and recommend any that are close to the end of their life be replaced. We offer a three-month warranty on re-gassing in which the cost of re-gassing will be taken off the price of a new stay supplied by us.
Tyreworld
My tyres have just passed a WOF, are they going to last me 12 months to the next one? Not necessarily, the warrant of fitness will only measure them and pass them as legal on the day, so if your tyres are close to the limit, there is a good chance they will have worn down to an unsafe level before your next WOF. Now is the best time, with winter coming, to make sure your tyres are at a safe level, so come in and get a free tyre check from the team at Tyreworld today.
Is a more expensive tyre necessarily going to last longer? No, some very expensive tyres are made of soft compounds for grip and will not last very long at all. It’s best to come in and talk to the Tyreworld team about what tyres will best suit your driving needs. Why should I choose Tyreworld? As a team, they have 40 years combined experience in the industry. Daryl Smith has owned and operated the business for more than 10 years and they have a great location that’s close to the shops.

Ph 548 6939 Owen Tasker How can technology help sell my home? I’m sure many real estate agents have experienced this scenario; potential buyers visit their open home, only to leave disappointed because it doesn’t live up to the wide-angle photos that originally sparked their interest. Technology has brought many benefits to the real estate industry including a wider audience and transparency in the selling process. I’ve been using 3D walk-throughs for the last two years, which is in 1-1 ratio and therefore allows people to build an accurate picture in their mind. Plus, out of town buyers who would never have visited, get the chance to view the home and

make offers. Even Facebook has become a useful tool for marketing a property to a significantly larger audience. Through Facebook, I can target a property at 45,000 people, 2000 people will view it and around 800 people will actually click on the link to see the video, which with the help of a drone, can include aerial video and photography. To get the best price you need multiple offers and to get multiple offers you need to target the widest audience possible, that’s where technology plays a vital part in selling your home. Good real estate advertising costs, but bad real estate advertising costs so much more so, come and see me today to discuss marketing your property.

Classic look helps win Fashion in the Field

It wasn't just the horses that attracted their fair share of eyeballs at the Nelson Harness Racing summer meet on Sunday -- Fashion in the Field was a popular competition off the track. The annual competition sees the more fashionable amongst us show off their best in one of four categories -- mens, womens, boys and girls. Mens winner James Glover, a Nelson entrepreneur, says his look was simple. "I'm a mod, always have been, so that's the style I went for." It was a style that worked for judges Angela Leonard, Grant Kerr and Clare Scott. "It's cool, I didn't expect to win," says James, who was encouraged to enter on the day by a friend. For womens winner Elizabeth Charleston, the win capped off an incredible winning weekend. The Waikato horse rider was in the South Island for the Buller A&P Show, where she won numerous awards including best presented horse and champion senior rider. "It's been a great weekend," she gushed. She says she decided to enter the competition after seeing that she would be in Nelson following the Buller show. "My inspiration was summer and practical. I have thick heels so I wouldn't sink in the grass. For the dress, I wanted to embrace summer with a nice bright colour. The headwear was to avoid the wind because wind can be a big problem at the races." Organiser Angela Leonard, manager of Morrison Square, says the event was a "fantastic" success. "I couldn't fault it. It was well organised, the weather was fantastic. We also had a wide variety of fashion and it was great to see vibrant colours and classy hats." She says 25 women entered, 10 men, four boys and nine girls. The event was sponsored by Morrison Square and Wild Tomato.

WhEN thiNgS DoN’t go accorDiNg to PlaN If you venture out on the water, preparing for the ‘what if’s’ is a must-do. Being able to deal with a capsize is an essential skill for anyone paddling beyond the beach. Here are a few pointers to help you prepare: • If you capsize, your first thought should be to grab hold of your kayak. The wind doesn’t need to be particularly strong to blow your kayak away from you. • There are numerous ways to get back onto or into your kayak, if you have never tried this, give it a try at the beach one day. Just try it close to shore and ensure there’s no offshore breeze. Different styles of kayaks require different techniques and you may find it best to be taught by someone who can explain the process to you. • It’s very easy to say, “my kayak is stable, I will never capsize”. A better attitude to have is that a capsize is unlikely, but it is better to be prepared, just in case. Practicing a re-entry or remount will not only increase your safety on the water, but it will also boost your confidence. • If you find it a struggle to get back onto, or into, your kayak, don’t give up hope. There are techniques that may better suit you, as well as gear designed specifically to help you out. • Ensure your hatch lids function well. A poor seal will result in water entering the sealed sections of your kayak and you will lose buoyancy, reducing your safety margin. If you want to learn more about preparing for your kayaking trips, pop in for a chat. We can also show you a few accessories that will help you deal with any issues that may arise on the water. Kayak HQ is your one-stop shop for all your kayaking needs.

Hunt’s drop-kick up for Halberg Award the year after he received a message from his dad. “I had no idea and it probably wasn’t until I saw the list of other names when I thought ‘wow, you’re in a list with some pretty amazing people’.” The sporting moment award gives the New Zealand public the opportunity to choose the nation’s most exciting, remarkable, or compelling sporting moment, game or series in 2017. The public can vote for their choice once a day by text message or online at www. sportingmoments.co.nz. The winner will be presented at the awards on February 8.

Nelson’s Mitchell Hunt’s long-range, match-winning drop-kick for the Crusaders has been nominated for a Halberg Award, but it will be up to the public, not judges, as to whether it wins or not. Hunt’s stunning 50 metre drop-kick came at the end of its round robin match against the Highlanders in Christchurch and is up for New Zealand’s Favourite Sporting Moment of 2017. The moment came when the Crusaders pack had been bashing away at the Highlanders defence for 20 phases with very little progress. Hunt says there were a couple of chances for a penalty but the referee dismissed them. Then prop Wyatt Crocket turned around to Hunt and boomed “do something with it”. “Big boys up front were pretty knackered, to be fair,” says Hunt. “So I said to [Crusaders halfback] Bryn Hall, two more phases and I’ll go for it.” Hunt’s sweet strike sailed through the air and he says it was only the distance that worried him. “Once I looked up I knew the direction was fine, it was just whether it had the legs.”

Dana Dawn gave local race fans something to cheer about at the Nelson Harness Racing summer meet on Sunday. The Richmond-trained horse steamed home to win race eight of the races at Richmond Park and with good odds it wasn't just her Wakefield owners, Rob and Sue Stuart, who were walking around with big smiles. It was Dana Dawn's second win at Nelson after winning on the same track in 2016. Rob says they were delighted with the result and that of their other horse, Scelta Uno, which finished second in race five. "Both did us proud. You always hope they'd do well but we thought if they could both run in the first three we'd be more than happy, so it's above expectations really. Very pleased." Sue and Rob put the success
course bets on Sunday. On-course, local punters bet $123,000 on the races on Sunday. Event organiser Chris Butler says they were "very lucky" with weather over the two-day meet. "There have been challenges with the weather but we dodged a bullet on Friday and it actually held off, but the crowd was a bit lower. But we've made up for that today with the sunshine and a big crowd." He says there was plenty going on for those who attended with activities for kids, Fashion in the Field, and the action on the track. "The racing's been good and everyone seems really happy and say they're having a good time." He says around 3000 people came through the gate on the second day of the meet.
