Katrina McLean never thought she would have to relive the moment when the Moutere Hills Community Centre caught fire. Less than three months after the first incident, a second blaze struck, putting to waste hundreds of volunteer hours that have gone into getting the centre up and running before September.

A Richmond street is on weka watch after four chicks were discovered in a garden earlier this month. Lodestone Rd couple Ricky and Celia Dasler have regularly spotted native birds in their backyard as it backs onto the Dellside Reserve, but this was the first time they had found weka chicks. “Weka have always grazed around our area because it’s covered in native trees but to see the little chicks was pretty amazing,” says Ricky. New World set for Gladstone Rd Phillip Rollo

A new supermarket looks set for Richmond after Foodstuffs South Island alerted residents near Three Brothers Cnr that it intends to open a New World supermarket on a site it bought seven years ago. Roger Davidson, who is the general manager of property for Foodstuffs South Island, confirmed the company has applied for resource consent with the Tasman District Council to build on the Gladstone Rd site previously occupied by Bay Nurseries. “We’re now waiting for the Tasman District Council to review that application, and sent a courtesy letter to the neighbours about our plans,” he says. Until we hear any outcome from the Tasman District Council we’re unable to say when customers could expect to

Ian Paterson, who lives within close proximity to the site, says neighbouring residents will meet with some Tasman District councillors tonight to discuss their views after receiving the letter from Foodstuffs South Island. “We’d like to have a meeting just to gauge the reaction and some people we told hadn’t got the letter,” he says. “We want to just explore the proposal and find out what the impact will be. Farmers’ support comes ‘too late’

Sara Davidson Richmond

Phillip Rollo Federated Farmers have joined a chorus of organisations wanting to rid the region of great white butterflies, but its lack of financial support is “disappointing” according to Vegetables NZ director Mark O’Connor. Gavin O’Donnell, who heads the Nelson sector of Federated Farmers, recently attended a bio-security meeting and was alarmed at the potential damage the butterfly could cause, at a time when the butterflies are due to start breeding. “Any pasture pest is a high risk because it not only reduces the quantity of feed available but also because they are cold-tolerant and can operate in the cooler temperatures,” he says. “There was one in the Moutere which was discovered after he brought some broccoli in the Nelson-Richmond area.” He says the butterfly could be a real risk to brassica crops in the agricultural industry, as it is used to fill a gap in feed over the summer months. “At this point and time we want to alert people of the potential danger and look out for the pest should it arrive.” But Mark questions why Federated Farmers has only now voiced its opinions three years after the first findings, and says financial assistance is key to stop the butterfly from spreading. “It’s a pretty weak effort just putting out a warning now after three years. Where were they and why aren’t they funding it?” he says. “At this stage DOC are doing a good job trying to contain it along with Vegetables New Zealand, who have put in significant funding trying to eradicate it. Everything counts and we appreciate it but DOC have been left out there to push this along. We haven’t had

The caterpillars and its tiny yellow eggs are generally found in clusters on host plants, particularly nasturtium, honesty and brassica vegetables such as broccoli and cabbages, and it can reduce its host plan to a skeleton overnight. Since the butterfly was first found in Nelson in 2010 it has spread to Richmond with a few isolated finds further out in Tasman more recently in Best Island and the Glen.

Losing the town’s i-Site would be a devastating loss to Murchison, says community council chairman Simon Blakemore. Nelson Tasman Tourism has announced that it is seeking alternative visitor service models for Murchison and Golden Bay following a major review on how the region’s four i-Sites operate. NTT manages the Nelson, Takaka and Murchison i-Sites and provides funding the Motueka centre but says the costs of maintaining them all is too much and the demand from tourists, many of whom now get a lot of information from the internet, has decreased. The Murchison Community Council is currently coming up with alternative solutions over the next two weeks, a time frame which Simon described as unfair. “It’s so unrealistic. There are a few ideas but how on earth can these be put in place in a very short time? I just don’t know.” Simon says one idea was amalgamating council’s services by situating the i-Site inside the library, which

would take it off the main road. “It’s very difficult because we just don’t have long to sort it out.” NTT is co-owned by Tasman District and Nelson City councils and says more than 80 per cent of foot traffic and sales comes from the Nelson and Motueka i-Sites and only about 36 per cent of the operational losses. Its chair, Phil Taylor, says the current model is not financially sustainable. Nine staff would lose their jobs if the two i-Sites were to close and NTT, along with TDC, has launched a consultation process with communities in Murchison and Golden Bay. “NTT is convinced that physical i-Site or visitor centres will still be required in the future,” says Phil. “But the look and range of services offered will need to change. Visitors will still wish to speak face-to-face with a person to seek information about what there is to see and do in the area, book accommodation and activities and seek reassurance about some of the choices that are on offer.”

Man beaten at rural home

Two Wakefield men were charged after a home invasion at a rural Brightwater property last weekend, which saw a man “badly beaten” while his 10 year old child was in the house. Police issued a statement last week that said a 60 year old man had appeared in Nelson District Court charged with aggravated burglary, wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and unlawful possession of a pistol. He entered no plea and was remanded in custody to reappear today. A second man, aged 35, was also due to appear. He faced charges of aggravated burglary, wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and unlawful possession of a pistol. The victim, who is a 47 year old man was at home with his 10 year old child when the incident occurred about 9.45pm last Saturday night. Police say the man was badly beaten and spent a night in Nelson Hospital being treated for his injuries. The ten year old child was uninjured during the incident. According to police, the offenders were not known by the victim and they say investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident were still ongoing.

list in terms of dangers to the weka chicks. He says if anyone spots weka chicks on their property, they should just “leave them alone”. Colin Andrews of Keep Richmond Beautiful says it is a huge positive that they have been spotted. “There’s obviously a risk from dogs but the very fact that they are there shows there is bigger numbers in the bush and that’s a big positive. The Native Bird Recovery group has made a huge difference.”

Local man reunited with his plane Sinead Ogilvie

It was a sense of déjà vu that reunited Richmond man and former British Army Air Corps mechanic Geoff Trow with a plane he once serviced halfway around the world more than 50 years ago. While visiting the Omaka Classic Fighters Airshow in Blenheim a few weeks ago, a Chipmunk WB693 caught his eye, looking eerily similar to one he had serviced as a light aircraft mechanic in Libya in the 1960s. After some research carried out by his wife Val, Geoff was shocked to realise it was the same plane. “I thought I recognised it and I was completely surprised to see it was

still flying, it was even more amazing that I bumped into it in New Zealand.” After contacting the plane’s current owners, Pukekohe pilots Bryan and Sandy Stokes, Geoff was treated to a flight in the plane, for old times sake he says. “It is in really good condition and it brought back a lot of memories of travelling as a passenger in it all those years ago. You enter the plane through the hatch and I can remember jumping up onto the wing and into it no problems back them, but of course I’m older now you see.” He says one of his most memorable services on the plane was squeezing down into the fuselage to paint over

some corrosion and accidentally knocking over the tin of paint in the process. “I wriggled down with this tin of paint and spilt the tin. The fumes hit me like a brick wall. I got out ok but I do wonder if that spill of paint is the reason it’s lasted so long.” Geoff says the coincidence was once in a lifetime and that he and Val plan to stay in contact with Bryan and Sandy in future.

A new building for the Waimea College guidance centre staff has gone up near its northern entrance, highlighting the role it plays at the school. The six staff in the guidance centre are in charge of the welfare of children at the school and offer counselling services, social work, learning support and train year 13 students as mediators. Head of department Chris Jessep says the service outgrew its previous building and was pleased their work was acknowledged

by the school’s board of trustees. “There’s an increase in students accessing this service and outside services too,” she says. “There has been a huge growth in the past eight years and it’s fantastic that we can offer these services here.” Chris says the biggest change over the past eight years is the complexity of the way families live. “Our function is to keep kids in education and in the classroom but also to support them with the issues that life can hurl at them.”

Dog trainer blasts ‘naïve’ owners

7

Wow, a new band at Club Waimea!

Andrew Board Editor

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz A dog trainer with 20 years’ experience says dog owners need to shape up and take more control of their dog while out in public. Gordon Hill is a registered NZQA assessor and dog trainer who has recently moved to Nelson and says he’s seen plenty of examples of poor dog handling during the past few months, leaving the possibility for dog attacks wide open. “People have this thought that as soon as they get to a park they can let their dog off the leash and let them go,” he says. “There’s no excuse for taking a naïve attitude because the number of children who are bitten in this country is gross, absolutely gross.” He says too many people think it’s ok to let their dog off the lead too often and often dogs aren’t getting the right training. “Some dogs get trained wrong and that’s a problem everywhere, people who aren’t qualified are training dogs. Another common problem is the puppies being taken too early from their mother. If it’s a backyard breeder they’re happy to sell a puppy quick to get the coin. If it’s a good breeder they won’t let you have the puppy until it’s had a full eight to nine weeks with its mother.” Nelson SPCA manager Donna Walzl agreed with Gordon’s statements, saying it causes all sorts of problems if dogs aren’t trained properly.

ENTERTAINMENT LIVE this Saturday night! Dog trainer Gordon Hill says dog owners need to take more responsibility for their dogs. Photo: Andrew Board. “It makes it really difficult actually. Some of the dog owners we see don’t take them anywhere, never considered taking them to dog training and it makes life really hard for them.” Gordon says people need to be more aware of what the laws are and where and when they can let their dog off the leash. “Just today there was a good example, a lady with a German Shepherd doing everything right, had her dog on a leash and there was a small dog there off the leash. Now if the little dog went over to the big dog and it bit it, that lady would get blamed for having a vicious dog, but it wasn’t. It was the smaller dog off a lead that caused the trouble.” He says some dog owners are too relaxed and that is half the problem. “I just want everyone to be safe and a lot of what I’ve seen isn’t safe.” • To contact Gordon phone 027 215 6156.

Anti-gay marriage concerns: I am disappointed in your approach to how you handle our religious groups in the local area. I have just finished reading the “Just a thought” column, and despite knowing that it is a collective advertisement (and thus contributing to your profits) it is disgusting that you allow such bigoted, unintelligent and uninformed information to be spread throughout our region. This is not the first time I have read

I encourage you if not to remove the section entirely but to at least have some restraint or as you are aware, a way for them to sight their sources in any actual media print that has to be expressed. Mega pumpkin comp with Sinead Ogilvie

Wednesday April 10 Ranzau School’s second ever Ride to Ranzau event drew in hundreds of participants who helped raise more than $2000 for the school. The funds raised will go towards their junior discovery area and school fitness track. Wednesday April 3 The Waverley St Kindergarten Wheelathon was huge success, generating more than $1520 to go towards buying new physical education equipment. Organisers would like to thank each parent, grandparent and the other supporters who turned out to sponsor each lap completed by the children. Wednesday April 3 Clare Sanders, Veronica Mitchell and Sjann Hungerford are still looking for 5 Gum wrappers to complete their entry into their school arts festival. Anyone who can offer 5 Gum wrappers or tip offs on where they can find them can contact Garin College students at Garin College on 543 9488. Wednesday April 3 The ‘eye opener’ held by the Nelson Waimea Gun Club was attended by more than 80 people who wanted to get a head start on the duck shooting season ahead. The event, sponsored by Stirling Sports saw Robbie Sinclair leave with a brand new shotgun and Mitchell Rowling took home a .22 rifle. Martin O’Connor was named the overall winner.

A huge pumpkin weighing in at 170.5kg took out the Mega Pumpkin competition held at the Mapua Tavern on Saturday. More than 70 people entered their homegrown pumpkins into the annual competition which saw Waimea College take home the prize for first place. Pumpkins big and small, ‘arty farty and ‘ugly fugly’ were just some of those entered in by people from all over Nelson. Samuel James, who entered his 104 kg whopper says he didn’t have any special tips on how his pumpkin grew to such a size but thought it could have something to with “feeding it sheep poo”. The competition, organised by Club Mapua, raised $2500 to go towards the restoration of the Mapua Hall.

WEDNESDAY 17 April 2013

With Robyn Hollis

Autumn in Nelson has to be one of my favourite months. Lovely crisp, cool mornings, warm days and not much wind. It is also really good to get the night temperatures down so we can sleep a bit easier! The colour from the Sasanqua camellias’ is starting again both in the garden and along the Railway reserve. These are some of my favourite plants as they are so easy to grow and are relatively maintenance free. They are beautiful in flower right at the start of the winter season, are not bothered by frosts (some of the white flowers get a bit of damage but they seem to keep going…), they do not grow too big for the smaller garden and come in a good range of colours - pinks through to reds and the ever popular white Setsugeka with its bright yellow stamens, making it look like a poached egg. One to look out for and which is really good grown in a pot is “Yuletide”. It has a smaller bright red flower and it is very slow growing with a neat, tidy habit. With their glossy green leaves these early flowering camellias really look good all year round. They only need a trim once the flowering is over to help retain their shape and the occasional spray for black aphids. As I may have told you we have a son living in the Ukraine. He and his wife are in the process of building a townhouse about a 30 minute drive out of Kiev and Chris has developed quite an interest in gardening and growing his own organic produce. The autumn/winter season over there is much colder and he is installing solar panels and starting a hydroponic system. Thought I would enclose a small paragraph which may be of interest. “I have started sprouting in a jar of water, a sweet potato from an imported one we bought in the super-

ennials and trimming lavenders, feeding and re-planting lawns, the list goes on and on. It is also very satisfying to sit back with a glass of wine at the end of a busy day and see the results of your efforts.

‘Hook up with a random [book]’

Pauline Stott, volunteer manager for the Crafts, Caring and Sharing outreach group which is celebrating 36 years of fun, arts, crafts and company. Every Monday the group meet with the main objective to get people who live alone to come along for a coffee and a chat. Members of the group take along a project to work on whether it be embroidery, card making or knitting or they simply sit and have a catch up. Pauline says anyone is welcome to join and the group will be starting up again on Monday May 2 until September 26 9.30am to 12pm at the Wesley Centre opposite the Tasman District Council. Photo: Sinead Ogilvie.

The Richmond Library is encouraging teens to hook up with a random – a mystery novel wrapped up to keep its identity unknown while it’s on the shelf. The ‘Hook up with a Random’ promotion is targeting college-age teens in the Tasman District to branch out and read something different. It will run until the last day of the next school holidays and inside the book could be free vouchers, while the reader of each book that is rated somewhere between “lame” or “epic” goes into the draw for a larger prize, which will be drawn during youth week on May 10. Melissa Savage of the Richmond Library says the

promotion is just a bit of fun, and will hopefully encourage more teenagers to not only read the book, but to rate it afterwards, enabling staff to get a gauge on what was popular. “We’ve made it really easy – just grab a wrapped book at Richmond, Motueka or Takaka libraries and take it home. After reading it, you fill out a rating card which you return with your book to enter the larger prize draws. All the books are wrapped up so it is totally random – students might even get lucky with a free voucher from local businesses inside,” she says. “It’s a bit of fun to have a surprise to take home and the bonus is that you might discover a new writer or genre to enjoy.”

Local singing extraordinaire Jontee Bowater has been taking the London musical industry by storm over the past nine months and is now looking for his next adventure. Just under two years ago, Jontee got the opportunity of a lifetime when he was awarded a scholarship for a course at the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain. Since then he was asked to stay on as an official member of the choir. “The way the National Youth Choir works is that you are supposed to start when you are four or five years old, and go through training until you’re 20 or 22 years old. I just got a scholarship to jump in at the age of 18.” Since returning to London last July, Jontee has performed in several NYCGB concerts, had his own soloist concert and had the opportunity to sing with Idina Menzel – an American singer and Broadway actress. In between returning to New Zealand, for a brief visit last June, Jontee performed a number of concerts for NYCGB at the Royal Albert Hall before resigning from the choir. “In August 2012, I resigned from the choir feeling that I wanted to move in a different direction. I wanted to focus more on musical theatre, which is my passion,” he says. Pursuing another passion of his, Jontee took up a job at a coffee company called Ginger and White in Belsize Park, which is renowned for serving coffee to various celebrities and people in the music industry. “It was lovely being in a position where you got to see people living the life that you would quite like to lead.” “I met Kate Hudson, Helena Boham-Carter, Tim Burton, Johnny and Chris from Coldplay, and Sir Patrick Stewart [whilst working at Ginger and White].”

Jontee Bowater is back after two years in London. Photo: Lauren Wafer-Kiddle. Not long after starting his job at Ginger and White, Jontee got the opportunity to go watch one of his idols Idina Menzel in concert. He had previously decided against going due to the price of the tickets. “My friend Chris then rang me and said he could get me tickets. When we arrived I was really excited; we were sitting at the front of the dress circle,” he says. After her performance, Idina asked some in the audience to get up and sing with her. “I stood up and waved my hands in the air and she pointed at me and pulled me down. I got up and sang with her but I was completely numb, so star struck,” he says. Not long after, knowing that his visa was running out, Jontee started “putting things together” for his career. So far, he has made plans to move to Melbourne in May or June, focussing on some goals he has set for his future. “I am planning on putting together a soloist show by myself, where I can challenge myself and enjoy sharing the work that I have put together with people across the world,” he says. However, before that he wants to pursue some “promising connections” he made in London.

Bridget Budget answers your questions

Q: My daughter is in year 12 and

wants to study at university in Wellington in 2015. I am a single parent on a low income, and can’t financially support her. She will only get $211 per week from her student allowance. How can she pay her $340 week hall of residence cost? A: University study is getting more and more expensive. It is great that you are both thinking ahead about this big financial decision. Encourage your daughter to:  Write up a budget of her likely costs of living including the hall fee.  Calculate the living cost shortfall (which could be around $200 per week or $6000 for the academic year)  Explore local options for study so she could live at home  Consider staying with family, or maybe going flatting  Start saving money earned from working while she is still at school  Apply for scholarships: She may need excellent grades in yr.12 to apply for scholarships which can cover fees and living costs  Think about taking a working gap-year so she can save for university  Work part-time while she is studying at university I think a debt for education is a good investment if it means your daughter will earn more in the future.

Warning to Tasman Rate Payers

What has happened to the residents of Lower Queen Street and Headingly Lane could easily happen to you. With the Council initiated rezoning of our properties, our rates have skyrocketed. When the issue was first discussed we were told that we would be rated as existing use until such time any development began or until our properties were sold. On Fair Go in September 2012, Mayor Richard Kempthorne said: “I absolutely understand their feelings……. I have been helping them and will continue to help them.” Mr Mayor we need your help. Here are some questions for you: • Why were we not consulted in the first instance about the rezoning? We did not want it changed – the first we knew about it was when we read it in the newspaper in June 2005. • Why have you not kept to your word that our rates would not be affected by the rezoning? Our rates went up in July 2012 – in some instances by up to 300% • Exactly what has the Council

done that warrants such an increase? We are all still on septic tanks, provide our own stormwater drainage and have no footpaths even though we are less than 2 km from the Council offices. • How long will our extended families have to assist us in paying our massive rates before the Council keeps to its original word and allows us to pay our rates as “existing use” as promised? • Why will the Council not pay back the money we have already paid when at the same time they are pursuing a policy in Parliament to allow them to retrospectively charge ratepayers in Tata Beach and Ligar Bay? Is this not a double standard? • Who is the anonymous developer you spoke of on Fair Go? Why has this developer not spoken to any of the affected residents? • The Nelson, Gisborne, Marlborough, Queenstown and Wellington Councils (to name but a few) have “Rate Remission for Existing Land Use – Land affected by plan changes” policies. Why does Tasman District Council not have

such a policy in place? • Why has the Council produced a policy which may be used to exclude all or any ratepayers even if the rate remission is adopted? Residents of Lower Queen Street and Headingly Lane are feeling stressed and bullied by the Council. We are financially embarrassed as a result of these excessive rate rises. At this stage of our lives we should be able to relax in the knowledge that our homes are secure and we can “rest easy”. The Council has denied us this. The Urban Development Plan released by the Tasman District Council this month, states that homes surrounding the central business district of Richmond are to be replaced with multi-storey residential developments. Once the properties are rezoned to allow such development, you too will be rated in a different bracket and you could be facing similar increases to those the Council has imposed on us. Residents of King Edward Street in Motueka are already dealing with this very situation.

Gisborne District Council 2.3 Remission of Rates – Land Affected by Plan Changes. Objective: To observe existing use rights of land affected by zoning changes when there is a plan change which reclassifies that land into a different rating bracket. Criteria: If land has been correctly used under the operative (or proposed) District Plan, and the land is subject to a plan change resulting in a different zoning and different rates being due, until the land is sold, or the use of the land changes, rates will be calculated based on the existing land use.

WE NEED THE HELP OF FELLOW TASMAN RATEPAYERS AND RESIDENTS Please send a submission for a Rates Remission Policy for Existing Land Use – Land Affected by Plan Changes, as outlined below. Feel free to copy the wording below or write your own. We ask the Tasman District Council to adopt the following policy under Section 102(3) Rate revision Policy of the Local Government Act 2002.

Rates Remission for Existing Land Use – Land Affected by Plan Changes Objective: To observe existing use of land affected by zoning changes where there is a plan change which reclassifies that land into a different rating bracket by way of a valuation. Criteria: • Form a working party which includes representatives from the affected ratepayers to develop a plan on Rate Remission criteria which is acceptable to both the Council and the residents and ratepayers. • The rate Remission policy must apply to all ratepayers throughout Tasman • It applies until the property is sold or developed and utilised for commercial purposes. • That ratepayers and property owners pay rates as per existing use and increased rates as a result of rezoning do not take effect until such time as land is either sold for development or developed. • Rate remission shall apply to the current financial year.

Submissions to the Council regarding the Rate Remission Proposal must be received by the Council before 4.30pm on 22 April 2013 Submissions can be in the form of a letter to the Council or written on the submission form which is on the back of the Council’s Draft Annual Plan 2013/14 Summary or may be downloaded from the Council website www.tasman.govt.nz We need your support to ensure that the Mayor and the Council honour their word and allow properties throughout the district which are subjected to zone changes continue to be rated according to existing use until such time as the land is sold or developed. Your support is crucial. Please contact Debbie Fitzpatrick 027 544 1244 or email Debbie.fitz@slingshot.co.nz or Shona McBride on 544 1484 or email shonamcb@gmail.com for any further information. Brightwater Community Newsletter

Welcome to our April Newsletter, Autumn is well and truly here, and it is great that the mornings are lighter earlier with the ending of daylight saving time. I certainly find it easier to get out of bed when it is daylight. It has also been great to have some rain, everything is looking green and fresh. We would like to congratulate everyone at Brightwater School on a wonderful 125th School Reunion, what an awesome event, enjoyed by all. At our meeting this month we had Mayor Richard Kempthorne, the CEO of TDC Lindsay McKenzie along with TDC Councillors and staff take us through the draft annual plan. We would like to thank everyone who came along and took part in the discussion. You all will have received a brief outline of the Draft Annual Plan in your letterbox. If there is anything at all that you would like to make a submission on this will need to be done by 4.30pm April 22. They assured us that there have been cutbacks in every department and the plan is to keep the rates increase down to between 1.6 and 2.6 percent. We are still working on the BMX track and have contacted the Council about the safety

rail that is to be put up there and hope to have some news about this soon. We would love to hear your ideas for our Village Green, email Dorothy Rogers at rogers@ ts.co.nz or Debbie de Joux at grantanddebbie@ kinect.co.nz. It is World Heritage Day this month and if you are interested there is a tour that will be visiting six local schools on Thursday April 18. It will leave the TDC at 8.50am and return at 3pm. Cost $20. Our next meeting is on Tuesday May 7 at 7.30pm to be held at the Brightwater School Staffroom. Thanks, your Community Association. Annual Trike-a-thon a huge success Last month Pinegrove Kindergarten ran their annual trike-a-thon alongside the wonderful and supportive Family Liaison group on the Brightwater Domain. There were also four Easter raffle hampers for sale to raise funds towards the purchase of new painting easels and bike helmets for the kindys eight new balance bikes. Organisers would like to say a huge thank you to all supporters and say they are pleased to announce that they raised almost $1800 towards the new resources.

Monarch butterfly by Lauchlan Mortimer, 5 years old, Brightwater School. What’s happening at Brightwater Playcentre Firstly a massive thank you to Higgins Concrete! Brightwater Playcentre has been held in the old Spring Grove school house for many years now and has seen a lot of changes in its time. A few weeks ago some of the children helped lift a large number of little paving slabs which had been made unsafe due to tree roots. We then had the dilemma of what we should do with that patch of land so that the children had a tidy, attractive and safe passage from building to sandpit. Higgins Concrete came to the rescue! Their very generous donation of concrete and time made it possible for us to lay a pathway from the building to the sandpit. The children watched with great excitement as a massive concrete truck backed into their play area and dumped the concrete into the readymade mould, definitely not a sight they see every day. Thank you so much Higgins Concrete Nelson and A&J Hall Builders Ltd who made our path for us. We had to postpone our fundraising quiz night but due to the change of date we are already selling tickets fast! Our quiz night will now be held on the 8 June, 7pm at Hope Community Church, Ranzau Road. $15 pp includes supper. Fully licenced bar with EFTPOS available. Teams of up to 10 players. For tickets please contact Jill 541 0472

My Old Friend By Nicholas Mr Naylor is really old. He has white hair like a pirate’s map. He has wrinkles like a dead tree. His sunglasses are pitch black. He holds a white stick with a black handle. He is 97! He always smiles but he is not always happy! He always gives us money when it is our birthday. He was born in World War 1! In World War 2 he was a policeman. He would help protect the people. He is English but he lives in Lower Hutt. He is best friends with Nana. Once every year he comes to stay with us. He is so old he is blind. He has no car, no job and a small family. His wife is dead and one of his sons is dead.

He likes listening to talks like a fox. Lots of the time he talks about the olden days (World War 1 & 2). Sometimes he tells us things twice. He likes ringing us on the phone every now and then. When he comes to stay he always wants to sleep in my bed, Jonty’s bed or Alexandra’s bed. He is really nice to me. I think he was born a few years after the Titanic sunk. He is happy lots. When he came to my 6th birthday party he went home happy as a pirate with $600,000! That’s a lot but he did not have $600,000. I cannot wait until he comes to stay this year.

Rabbits bank two more The Stables Richmond Rabbits had a clear skill and numerical advantage when it cruised past the Wairau Taniwha 54-8 on the weekend, with star centre Callum Smith dotting down three times in the rout. Despite banking another two points, assistant coach Deon Charles says the Rabbits were disappointed that a weakened Taniwha side showed up short on numbers. “We were definitely disappointed that the Taniwha didn’t turn up with a full strength side. We know how good they can be, and I’m sure things will be different when we

meet them over in Blenheim,” he says. And while the Rabbits will be firm favourites to beat the winless Victory Phoenix Vikings this weekend, Deon says the side will well aware at how tough the 2013 season is. “This week will be tough for us, they are the new side in the competition and searching for their first win, and I’m sure they could think of nothing better than to get that against the defending champs.” In other matches, the Stoke Cobras beat the Wanderers Wolves 14-10 in Brightwater and the Vikings lost 54-8 to the Tahunanui Tigers.

Nelson Netball

After several trials held throughout Nelson, local clubs have selected their teams for the oncoming 2013 season and colleges are in the throes of trials as they wait for summer sporting commitments to be completed. For anyone who wants to get on the court this season and is perhaps new to the area, or has been unable to trial, the first port of call should be the Nelson Netball Centre website www.nelsonnetball.co.nz simply go to the Club contact page to make your enquiry. The season tips off with the Geraldine Hodgson Tournament which is to be held at the Saxton Courts on Saturday and Sunday April 20 and 21. The tournament is a great opportunity for coaches to try combinations and

generally use the time on court to gel their team. Often it is the final “trial” for college teams if they have chosen to run a squad before naming their school’s elite team. This year the GH Tournament, as the tournament is fondly known, named so for Nelson Netball’s Patron Geraldine Hodgson, will be run slightly different after a request from one of the clubs. Previously played over three grades, this year the tournament will be played in four grades. The A grade will have two sections of five, which will play a round robin on Saturday before going into crossovers on Sunday. As a first, there will be a break during the day for players, coaches and umpires alike to catch their breath and fuel

up for the afternoon’s play. The first round will begin at 9.30am and play will continue through until 4pm. Games will run in 12 minute halves. During the off season Netball New Zealand have restructured with the 12 regions dissolved and five zones created. While Nelson was part of the Tasman Region they were aligned with the Central Pulse franchise in the ANZ Championship. Nelson now belong to Netball Mainland along with the Canterbury Tactix. The new structure has also paved the way for representative teams – previously playing as Tasman in the NZ Age Group Tournament and the Lion Foundation National Netball Championship, Nelson will field teams as their own identity. To do this will come at a huge cost, but the Nelson Netball Board has committed to the undertaking as a trialfinal foradvertisement 2013. End near for swim season Nelson Swimming Club swimmers had strong results at the Blenheim Distance and Sprint Swim Meet, which also doubled as the last event of the season for some competitors. Cara Pearson swam brilliantly to set two new Nelson-Marlborough records for her age. She broke her own old record in the 400m individual medley race by four seconds, and then followed this up by breaking the record in the 200m butterfly race by almost four seconds. Kaleb Johnston set a new NelsonMarlborough record for his age in the 50m backstroke beating the old record that has stood for ten years by 0.5 seconds. The day before, at the Nelson District Inter-School Intermediate Swimming Championships, Kaleb also broke the 50m backstroke Year 7 record by almost four seconds.

Kaine Ransby swam strongly to beat his personal best times in all three races he entered, and both he and Jacob Johnston swam under 30 seconds for the first time ever in the 50m butterfly race. Some of the other swimmers that set personal best times were; Cassandra Hagan beating her 400m freestyle PB by 24 seconds while Caitlin Delany took 21 seconds off her 400m freestyle PB and then took over six seconds off her 200m breast PB. Amy Thomson thumped almost 20 seconds off her 200m freestyle PB while Jake Hogg smashed 12 seconds off his 200m breast PB and Sam McKenzie chopped over seven seconds off his 200m butterfly PB. The last national swim event for the season is the NZ Division 2 Championships being held in Invercargill from April 21 to April 24.

Waimea College’s Henry Jaine and Nayland College’s Olivia Miller can both lay claim to being the top Nelson secondary school mountain bikers, after the pair won two individual titles each at the Codgers Trail on Wednesday. Participation numbers increased hugely on previous years with 107 riders competing at the Tasman Secondary School Mountain Biking Championship – a figure that is more than double the 45 that turned out last year when the event was first held. Senior girls champion Olivia finished with a one minute lead on Golden Bay High School’s Holly Ford, who placed second while Kate Newton from Nelson College for girls took the junior

Waimea Old Boys Rugby Club Old Boys score win over new boys www.wobrfc.co.nz

It is now two from two for Waimea Old Boys, with the side chalking up a win over new boys Kahurangi Hawks in Motueka on Saturday. Played in wet conditions, both sides struggled to break down each other’s defence and the game wasn’t sealed until the final moments when Waimea lock Tevita Ca-

vubati crashed over for the only try of the match and stretch the final score to 16-3. Earlier Billy, playing at first five, kicked three penalty goals to give his side a deserved lead 9-3 lead. Assistant coach Nick Marquet says Dan Hytongue and Sha’non Temita were stand outs in the Waimea pack. “We tried to take them on when we

Waimea winger Michael Bates slips away from the Kahurangi defence.

had the chance but it was tough conditions and they defended really well.” Kaide Whiting missed the game with a sore shoulder so Josh Rutledge moved in on to the halfback position, allowing Ben Jeffrey to slip into the midfield. This Saturday Waimea will return to Jubilee Park to host defending champions Nel-

son. Nick says they side is confident it can continue with its perfect start to the season. “We’re not over-confident or anything like that. But we’re in a good space and feeling like we’re doing a good job. Nelson is never easy so this Saturday will be tough but we want to carry on winning.” The game kicks off at 3pm.

Successful trip over the hill for Bs Wayne Oldham

Waimea Old Boys Bs travelled over the hill to take on Takaka for its first away game of the season on Saturday. After a positive start in the opening ten minutes, Waimea had to watch a disputed missed penalty attempt from in front by captain and first five John Higgins and an injury to prop Daniel Watson. Waimea lost its way for the next 15 minutes with Takaka playing an expansive style of rugby, scoring down the blindside through the team’s left winger. Helped by replacement prop Marc Hunter and some astute goal kicking by John and

SG

fullback Tom Cross, Waimea was able to regroup and gain good field position despite the wet conditions. From the next resulting phase, number eight Nita Laverihelotu broke from a ruck near the posts to work halfback Sy Keelan into space, enabling him to score out wide, making it five all at the break. Takaka started the better in the second half and were rewarded for their efforts with a penalty after Waimea were caught offside. This stung Waimea, who set about laying siege to Takaka’s goal line for a concerted period. Just as it looked like Waimea wouldn’t make this count after numerous pick and

SG

goes, that man Nita again burrowed over out wide, which was converted by John. From the kick off, openside flanker Ruben Finn effected a huge tackle and turnover, and from the ensuing scrum, Nita broke open and ignited the backline to put replacement winger Lee Mcbrydie away. John’s kicking boots were on again as he nailed the conversion. At this point Waimea were on a roll and scored their bonus point try when Ruben went over by the posts minutes later after he towed a low pass through to re-gather and score. With Waimea comfortably up 26-8 with just 20 minutes on the clock, Takaka tried

in vain, playing too expansively, causing many turnovers, for John and Tom to turn them around with raking kicks back into their own half. Eventually with eight minutes to go Takaka had their second try after some sloppy Waimea defending cost them as a Takaka loosie surged 30 meters to score next to the post. But it wasn’t enough and Waimea were able to take a long awaited away to the victory over the marble mountain men 26-15. Next week it’s the Battle of the Bridge with Wanderers coming to Jubilee. Come down and support the lads from1.30pm, before the As kick off at 3pm against Nelson.
