Cellphone black spots ‘frustrating’
Wakefield residents and businesses have had enough of slow internet service and poor cellphone coverage and hope a survey being conducted by the Tasman District Council will help highlight the seriousness of the problem to the government. Council is conducting the survey of internet and mobile phone users around the district to support an application for government funding to improve those services. The government is planning to pro-
vide $50million for expanding cellphone coverage and Focus Wakefield chairperson Angela McMekin says some of that needs to be spent in their area. Angela says the Wakefield district is one of the Nelson-Tasman region’s digital black holes and that’s frustrating residents and penalising businesses. She says the problem is so bad that people are not buying or renting houses in the area because they don’t have cellphone reception.

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz “I’m a district nurse here and often have difficulty trying to stay in contact with clients with so many black spots,” Angela says. “My husband works from home and it’s just as bad there. “He has to go outside to get coverage and
gets a message saying he’s missed a call a day after the person phoned. He often gets clients who say ‘I called you yesterday, why didn’t you call me back?’ “I also know one woman who has to stand on her kitchen table to take a cellphone call. It’s very frustrating.” Angela says there are cellphone black spots all around the Wakefield district, including

Champions! After 60 years
Wanderers Rugby Club has won a major senior A rugby trophy for the first time in at least 60 years. Even the management at the club can’t say for sure the last time they won a top-tier title. But the six decade wait for glory ended at Jubilee Park on Saturday when Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers beat their arch-rival Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys in the Tasman Trophy final. Wanderers captain Trael Joass said the team stayed humble in victory but admitted they were feeling the pressure to win after losing two Nelson Bays club rugby title games in as many years. “It’s been a long time coming and we’ve had pressure all week from the supporters. But it’s awesome for the boys and awesome for the club. We’re got a great thing going here.” Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers celebrate winning the Tasman Trophy title against Waimea Old Boys at Jubilee Park on Saturday. Eighty-eight Valley, Pigeon Valley, Higgins Rd and even on a section of State Highway 1 near Wai-iti. Although that’s frustrating for residents and businesses, she says it is potentially a matter of life or death for emergency services with callers unable to dial 111 from black spots. Nelson police wouldn’t comment on the issue because of contractual restraints with their service provider but the Waimea Weekly understands they are frustrated by the cellphone black spots. Eighty-eight Valley farmer Ian
Parkes says their biggest problem is the snail-paced internet service. He says websites providing information on the weather, finances and fertiliser programmes are an important tool for modern farmers and he “drinks a lot of coffee waiting to load those sites”. “We don’t get broadband so my secretary has to do all the computer work from her place in Richmond because it’s too slow up here. “We have a four million dollar business that employs 10 people and she should be operating it from here but she can’t.” Ian says he gets good cellphone coverage on his property al-

tion very patchy even within my house,” she says. “Sometimes I can get three to four bars while other times I am struggling to get a signal and that can sometimes be the same spot. “My internet access, I feel, is quite slow and more and more is dropping out for no reason. Sometimes one laptop will drop out and the other stay working for no
reason - I presume it is a load issue but I’m not sure.” Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne is urging residents to complete the survey so that council can prepare a strong bid for the government funding. Although Richard says digital networks are not part of council’s infrastructure, they are becoming “essential” for businesses. Richard says the key service providers have already identified areas around the district that have slow internet service and poor cellphone coverage. However, he says council needs personal accounts of the issues faced by residents and businesses to support their application for funding. The deadline for completing the survey is June 19 but Richard says that is short notice and he has asked for an extension. The survey is available at tasman.govt.nz or from council offices.

Bird the likely cause of water warnings A bird is the most likely cause of the contamination in Richmond’s new water treatment plant that resulted in the water being chlorinated and the Tasman District Council issuing a warning to Richmond residents to boil their water. The plant’s emergency chlorination system was activated last Thursday after low levels of the bacteria E coli were discovered in the water. Council
also issued a boil water notice to Richmond households as a precautionary measure after consultation with Nelson Marlborough District Health Board Public Health Service. The notice was lifted on Sunday but council communications manager Chris Choat says the water will continue to be chlorinated until the source of the contamination is identified and the problem
is resolved. He says engineers are presently emptying a water tank to find the source of the contamination. The new water treatment plant on Lower Queen St is still in a commissioning phase but has been providing water to Richmond in a trial operation period for the last two months. The trial period is expected to finish in August.
Winteruption hits Richmond A 20 metre snowy toboggan luge drew hundreds of children to Richmond’s Town Hall on Sunday as part of the Tasman District Council Winterruption Family Snow Day. Sealord provided ice for the base of the luge with Rainbow Ski Field providing a truck load of snow to form a slippery surface on top, perfect for sliding. Temperatures were a few degrees warmer than expected but luckily most of the snow stayed put. Organiser Paul McConachie says the council had received a lot of help building the luge and putting together the event. “A truck trucked [the snow] in this morning. We had some able helpers to position it all on site and groom it. Once a few people started riding down it flattened out.” He says he enjoys seeing the children’s “faces of delight” as they slid down the snow on inflatable inner tubes.

Modellers Pond saved, if enough money is raised Supporters of Tahunanui’s Modellers Pond had a significant win last week with the council agreeing to put money aside to concrete the bottom. The Nelson City Council have agreed to provide funding of up to $600,000, the rest will need to be paid for by the Nelson Society of Modellers. The council will also provide $15,000 a year towards maintenance costs. Modellers secretary Tracey Gibbs says the first step is for the council to draw up plans and get prices to seal the bottom of the pond with concrete. “We can then take these plans and go out and get sponsorship from businesses and community groups.” Tracy says she was “over the moon” with the support the society has had from the community. The petition presented to the council on Thursday received 1773 signatures. Seven Tahunanui School pupils, along with Tahunanui Business Association spokesperson John Gilbertson, presented the petition to Mayor Rachel Reese during the council meeting. Lucy Summerfield, a pupil at Tahunanui School, spoke to the council about how the current state of the pond affects her and her brother enjoying his model boat. “He can’t actually drive it around because all the wood gets twisted in the propeller. Me and Tristan have to wade out in this yucky, mucky, murky water and it’s disgusting. If we fix it up, then that would help a lot of people.”

Airforce flies into Hope Hope School students received some military-style training last week after some special people flew in for a visit. Members of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, who have been camping up the Wairoa River Gorge as part of an Initial Officer Training Course, shared some of their military exercises and training with year 5 and 6 students. Part of their programme required the group to put together and participate in a community project. The group chose to visit two schools in the area to show them what they have learned and experienced during their time within the Air Force. They organised various activities for the
children, including practical skills such as drills, how to put up tents, use of radios for communication and how to use camouflage vision. They also put the children through their paces on a military-style obstacle course and provided tours of two Unimogs. Teacher Di Scott says having the Royal New Zealand Air Force come to their small school has been an amazing experience for everyone. “It has been great to see the students develop teamwork skills and pitching in together and having a go at new things. It has also been really good for the students to hear messages about working
together from people other than their teachers. The Air Force have been working with the children and interacting and helping them through the activities, we’ve loved it,” says Di. The kids enjoyed the community initiative so much, it looks as though the Air Force may have drawn in some potential new recruits. “It’s really cool to have them visit as we are a small school and don’t normally get things like this,” says student, Lilly Zwart. “I especially liked learning the salutes - I think I want to be in the Air Force when I’m older because it’s just not for boys, it’s for girls as well,”

A report obtained by the Waimea Weekly shows that the slip that closed the historic Dun Mountain Walkway earlier this year was caused by construction of a track for the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary’s predator fence and that options for repairing the damage could cost more than $110,000. The report by Nelson Consulting Engineers also shows that the Sanctuary Trust, Nelson City Council and contractors, ignored geotechnical advice by cutting the track too close to the Dun Mountain Walkway, increasing the risk

TREE STUMPS REMOVED: Eight of the 15 tree stumps at Tahunanui Back Beach have been removed after a child came close to falling through one of them. Nelson City Council say they had an independent arborist look at the stumps and eight were removed as they were found to be rotting. The council says the stumps were considered to be a health and safety issue. “If someone’s child was playing on/under these and got hurt, then we would have been negligent not to have done something,” said the council. FINE FOR PLANT: Nelson Pine Industries Limited has been fined over $50,000 after one of its workers was injured trying to clear a jammed log in a conveyor belt with his hands. The man was struck by a metal log kicker last year and spent six days in hospital with lacerations to his left arm. He suffered from tendon, muscle and nerve damage. The company was sentenced at the Nelson District Court for failing to ensure the safety of an employee while at work. Nelson Pine Industries was ordered to pay $45,000 in fines and $10,000 in reparations to the worker.
of a slip. The report says the alignment of the track that was specified in plans was changed and moved to “inside the preferred 50m minimum separation to the walkway”. However, the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary Trust and Nelson City Council would not comment on the report which was sent to them on April 28. The trust’s general manager Hudson Dodd says he can’t comment on the report until they have completed the insurance process for the damage to the track and walkway. The council’s only response was “we are still working through the issues with the

FALLING SNOW GOOD NEWS FOR LOCAL SKIERS: A new snow pump and snow gun along with a good few weeks of snowfall are all signs for a good start to the season at Rainbow Ski Field. Rainbow marketing and events coordinator Georgie Tudor-Jones says the rate snow is falling at the moment is unusual for early June. “It’s quite rare to have this much snow at this time of year. It’s a lot more white than usual.” She says staff at the ski field have been prepping for opening day on July 4 with the mechanics working on the snow grooming machines.

Brook Waimarama Sanctuary Trust, to effect a permanent fix”. The report also provides six options for repairing the damage caused by the 35m long slip, that wiped out a 20m section of the historic, 150-year-old Dun Mountain Walkway and carried debris downhill onto the fence track. The walkway was closed following the slip and was only reopened after a temporary repair was completed on April 24. The options include stabilising the walkway and slip using retaining walls and posts, and replanting the slip, with the most expensive option costing “$110,000 or more”.

Nelson sailor wins round-the-world race

Nelson sailor Daryl Wislang’s Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing Team has won the Volvo Ocean Race with a leg to go, and the former Waimea College and Hope School student says he’s already setting his eyes on the next one. Daryl is the boat captain of Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing which crossed the finished line into Lorient in France in third place, but secured it enough points to ensure they could not be overtaken in the race for the round the world title. He says it was a strange feeling on the boat when it crossed the finish line knowing they’d done enough to win. “It was really close heading to the finish line, a team was just 0.6 of a mile behind us and if they had overtaken us we wouldn’t have been in the wining position, so it was pretty tense right up until the finish.” Daryl has been involved in the Volvo Ocean Race for a decade and he says to win it is a huge achievement. “It doesn’t matter how little sleep you’ve had, you’ve got plenty of energy to have a good celebration when you cross the line. It’s been ten years of my life to try and do it and it’s a great feeling. “There’s the America’s Cup, the Olympics and the Volvo Ocean Race, and to

Daryl says he’d love to take the next step and skipper his own boat. “It would be quite nice to get something going out of New Zealand. Skippering a boat is a goal I’ve had for a long, long time but whether or not that happens, who knows?” He has tried in the past to pull together
enough sponsorship money to put a New Zealand-based team together and is hopeful it can be done for the next race. In the meantime, Daryl will head to the United States a week after the end of the ocean race to sail in a trans-Atlantic race before taking a break. After that it could be planning for the next round the world race, or perhaps a tilt at the America’s Cup. “With all these people leaving Team New Zealand there might be an opportunity to go and do the cup with them, you never know.”

Lighthouse weather vane refurbished Jacob Chandler
The Boulder Bank’s iconic lighthouse is to have its weather vane reattached this week, after it was blown off and damaged in March’s 65-knot winds. The weather vane has been refurbished by Port Nelson staff, and Goleman Industrial Rigging have the difficult task of scaling the balcony and attaching the heavy weather vane to the top of the lighthouse. Bruce Robertson, one of the lighthouse caretakers who runs The Ferry to Haulashore Island, says the weather vane was due to be refurbished but the wind had got to it before plans were put in place to take it down properly. “I went out a couple of days after the storms and the wind had blown it off. The drama was that we couldn’t find it again." A member of the public later found the weather vane as he was walking along the boulder bank.

We took it back to the port and one of the machinists in there has rebuilt the whole thing,” Bruce says. The weather vane also smashed a small gas unit that fits on the top of the lighthouse. The unit is designed to control the asthetaline that once fuelled the lamp inside by contracting and expanding in the sun's warmth. “Apparently, when the sun came up it would heat up the

Bruce says he wasn’t sure how they would go about fixing it, but to his astonishment the workers at Port Nelson came across a brand new gas unit in its original packaging at a Port Nelson store room. "It was a spare. It’s bloody brilliant, when they made things in those days they made them to last.” Check out www.nelsonive.co.nz later this week for a video of the weather vane being reattached.

Speeding drivers caught Nelson motorists have been clocked travelling at up to 154kmh in a police speed sting. On Thursday night eight drivers were detected at speeds between 118 and 135kmh on Whakatu Drive. Two drivers received instant roadside suspensions the following night after being clocked travelling

Fizzy drinks banned from school disco Simon Bloomberg Parents are over the moon about Henley School's new policy of making the annual school disco a fizzy drink-free event. Three hundred and eighty-three pupils dressed up for the lunarthemed disco held in the school hall on Friday night. The pupils collected their disco packs as they arrived only to find that something was missing after the parents who organised the disco decided to replace the traditional fizzy drinks with bottled water. Parent and organising committee member Tash Mehrtens says they decided on the change after all the bad publicity surrounding sugary drinks. She says young children didn't need fizzy drinks to have fun at parties and dances and the
parents agreed that water was a healthier option. “Fun events don’t always need to involve sugar," Tash says. "It has also cut down on our organisational time as some kids can’t have sugar and we had to do separate packs for them." Parent Sally Robinson says she limits the amount of sugary food and drinks her children have at home and is pleased the school disco organisers decided to make the big night out fizzy drink-free. "There is so much sugar in their diets at the moment so I thinks it's a very good decision," she says. Surprisingly, many of the children agree with Tash saying that the children often got so hot and thirsty from all the dancing they actually asked for water instead of fizzy drinks.

be his artwork on display, he also makes his own frames, thanks to his other hobby. “That is handy, I just get the boards done for me and I do the rest. I really enjoy the whole process and I’m keen for feedback. Seeing my drawings there this weekend will be exciting.”
One of the more impressive artists at this weekend’s Nelson Art Group winter exhibition is also one of the group’s newest. Robbie Burns’ hobby for years has been woodworking, but when the months got colder he decided he needed a new pastime to keep his nights busy. “My wife is a keen embroiderer, so she’d be sitting there doing that at night time and I’d be watching the TV, so I thought ‘bugger this’ I need something else to do, so I went and bought some pencils and paper and went from there,” he says. That was last December and Robbie, of Stoke, has already finished several incredible portrait drawings, including his two kids, wife and even his cat. “Those won’t be for sale, though,” jokes Robbie. “I need to keep those ones.” He says he enjoyed art at school but hadn’t done anything about it until a few months ago. He got inspired after watching some instructional videos on YouTube and he joined Nelson Art Group a couple of months ago for further advice.” This weekend will be the first exhibition that Robbie has been involved in. But it won’t just
The Art Group Nelson winter exhibition is at the Stoke Memorial Hall this Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm. All artwork is for sale and more information can be found at www. Robbie Burns with a portrait he drew of Mother Theresa, which will be on artgroupnelson.co.nz display at the Art Group Nelson show this weekend. Photo: Andrew Board.

New flag road show hits Nelson: All those opposing it would not have boycotted it. Kirsten Taylor. Not a great turn out, hardly a representative sample. Adrian Ferris.
I don't want a flag that is like Aussie. We know how the election turned out. Plenty of left wing Key haters who dominate Facebook, but National won by heaps. A few years ago I visited Timaru and the play area they had put together for the kids was such a success. Now we have thousands of families come to holiday in Nelson, why cannot Nelson equal what Timaru has created? The city council has spent thousands to accommodate cyclists, don't you think our kids deserve as much? We have people on community service let's motivate these people to clean the area and get some concrete down. If the council is short of ideas contact Timaru council for picture/ plans. YOUR DAY
Recycling is now collected every two weeks.
Your blue recycling crate is now only for glass.
HOW DO I FIND OUT WHAT DAY MY BIN WILL BE EMPTIED? Each recycling bin is assigned to a specific street address. The collection day is written on the sticker – this is the day for both rubbish and recycling collections. So, for example, if it says “Tue” then your collection day for weekly rubbish bags is Tuesday. It also means that your fortnightly recycling collection will be on a Tuesday. The number after your day indicates whether your recycling will be collected on Week 1 or Week 2. 007

Art Bots made at Richmond Mall Rotary build barbecue shelters at Rabbit Island
Young visitors to the Richmond Mall on Sunday had the opportunity to create their very own ”Art Bot” as part of an activity set up by the Ministry of Inspiration. Art Bots are motor-powered creatures designed to hold felttip pens and create squiggly lines when placed on paper. Ministry of Inspiration president, Leanne Pressman, says the Art Bot idea was created to teach kids a little bit about electronics and motors safely while having a fun and creative time decorating them. Kids have designed Art Bots in all sorts of shapes from gnomes Bodhi Wardle, left, 15, and Jack Lane, 14, with their completed to spiders to battlebots. Art Bot creations. Photo: Jacob Chandler.

We spent a couple of weekends out there and had good support from the local businesses and council who paid for the concrete, so the whole project was completed debt-free.” The new shelters cover barbecues in Manuka Park and the Old Domain.

People using two of the electric barbecues at Rabbit Island won’t be running for cover when it rains anymore after the Rotary Club of Richmond built new shelters for the popular picnic sites. The Richmond Rotarians put the project on their to-do-list after talking to Parks and Reserves staff at the Tasman District Council. A team of eight volunteers, with support from Taylor Timbers, Placemakers, Russ Sawmilling, the New Zealand Electricity Department and Freeman Roofing who supplied materials, completed the shelters on June 6. “Our big focus for the year is always

The team at Age Concern Nelson Tasman are dedicated to improving the life and well-being of older people within the region. The not-for-profit organisation has branches around the country and focuses its attention on providing advice, support, information and advocacy on a range of issues and encouraging positive ageing for people of all ages. To achieve this, Age Concern Nelson Tasman is involved with preventing the abuse and neglect of our elderly community through educational presentations to various local groups; it also operates an accredited visiting service for lonely or isolated people and educates the elderly community on a number of topics so that they can have a vested interest in their future. Recently the Nelson Tasman office on Oxford St has undergone renovations, extending the building to accommodate a growing demand for their services. While their expansion has seen better facilities for clients to experience safety and confidentiality, it also highlights a rise in elder abuse and neglect within the community that is unacceptable. The team itself is also expanding to meet the needs of their clients. Jess Breeze holds the role of Elder Abuse Neglect Prevention Advisor, which sees her time split between liaising face to face with clients and their families, and giving presentations to educate groups around the region on the prevention of elder abuse. It also includes dealing with neglect or abuse cases as and when they arise, including selfneglect, which can be very serious and time

consuming. Wendy Duffy is focused on funding and event planning; because they are a charitable organisation, finding funds is vital to their survival, however, one of the key things that Age Concern value is building good relationships with stakeholders and fellow agencies, which helps their financial situation and ability to help those in need. Sue Tilby has managed the Nelson Tasman branch for the last four years and has overseen its growth from a one-man-band to today’s small team of committed professionals, each playing a vital part in the successful operation of a hugely important organisation. This week, the team will be recognising Elder Abuse Awareness Week with a handful of events, including a meet and greet at the Orchard St community housing on Thursday between 10am and 12pm. Sue says the day will have a relaxed atmosphere; allowing people to meet the team in person, take away information about their services and hopefully make contact again if they want to follow up with any concerns about their or another’s situation. So what is elder abuse? Elder abuse and neglect is a single or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring in any relationship where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person. The six commonly identified categories of elder abuse are: psychological, financial, physical, institutional, neglect, or sexual. In Nelson Tasman, Age Concern see around 100 people each year dealing with abuse. The majority of these cases are financial and of that, approximately threequarters are by family members. Age Concern Nelson Tasman not only strive to prevent the abuse and neglect of the elderly

Experience the camaraderie Don’t miss out on the chance to see barbershop at its best. Men in Accord are excited to be hosting the Canterbury Plains Men for a weekend of four part harmonies, a-capella. The Canterbury Plains Men are Christchurch’s barbershop group and twenty of them will be venturing north, spending Friday, July 24 and Saturday, July 25 in Nelson; the highlight of their trip being a joint concert on the Saturday. Men in Accord are hoping to take advantage of the great acoustics of Nelson Cathedral but the venue is yet to be confirmed. For a gold coin

Men in Accord are always on the lookout for new members and everyone is welcome. Even if you can’t hold a tune, don’t despair, the group are always happy to teach those that want to learn. Rehearsals are held every Tuesday from 7:15pm and are a great way to experience barbershop music, as well as the camaraderie of a good bunch of blokes. The Club Waimea Fishing Section enjoys fishing and social action both around Nelson and further afield. Our members are all keen fishermen and fisherwomen. In the past five years we have been successfully out fishing in Cook Strait from Picton, D’Urville Island from Nelson and also Okiwi Bay, Pelorus Sound from Havelock and the Kaikoura Coast from both the Clarence and Kaikoura itself and also Pegasus Bay from Motenau. We are always looking for new places to fish and are considering going out to Kaha-
rangi Shoals this winter. We also do local trips out of Nelson and Okiwi Bay using our members own boats for the usual species of brim, gurnard, snapper, blue cod, terakihi, kingfish and kahawai etc. We have competitions for members for these various species of fish and trophies are awarded annually. We meet monthly at Club Waimea on the first Wednesday of the month to discuss and organise all our events. Our next meeting is on Wednesday July 1 at Club Waimea, starting at 7.30pm. Our club contact person is Leanda Richards, Ph 5418123.

Having owned houses previously, Dave enjoys the con-
benefits of caravan life and freedom from the ties a house can bring. Living next to the race track is also a bonus as Dave is still very involved with it; continuing to own a couple of horses, and having owned and trained them earlier in his life. The other great thing about living in the camp, says Dave, is the people. Once in a while the camp will get together for a party, either in the club or, if it’s summer, around a barbeque outside. During Dave’s years as a resident of Club Waimea, the facility has only gone through one major change is his eyes and that’s its size. Back in Dave Porteous is one of Club the day the club rooms were Waimea caravan park’s longest much smaller and more standing residents, having been “homely,” than the modern there 32 years. building we see today, alvenience of living right in the though he agrees it still has a town centre, the economical great atmosphere.

Club Waimea has a new addition to its team. Phil Hazeldine has taken on the position of chef and from July 2, will be running Richmond’s only dedicated buffet restaurant. A la carte meals will also remain available. Phil has been a chef all his life and is looking forward to running Phil’s Place, which will be open Thursday to Sunday from 5pm. He will also be offering breakfast lunch and dinner catering for Club Waimea functions. For a proper introduction to Phil, keep an eye out for the upcoming Club Waimea feature in Waimea Weekly.
Club Waimea prides itself on providing a warm and friendly atmosphere where members can feel at home, and some have taken that quite literally. Club Waimea has a small community living on its back door step and no one knows Club Waimea hospitality better that resident Dave Porteous. Originally from Dunedin, Dave shifted to Spring Creek in Picton and then to Nelson where he planned to build a few houses. However, Dave couldn’t resist what the region had to offer and decided to stay put, settling into a job with Taylors Timber and deciding, on the spur of the moment, to purchase a caravan and stick it in the Club Waimea caravan park; a place he has now called home for 32 years.

The new workshop on Beach Rd offers much more room to accommodate engineering projects of all sizes. machinery. The work they do for Waimea Truck and Crane goes all over the country, while their local business includes well known companies such as Borlase Transport, Higgins Contractors and Allan Hahn Contracting. When it comes to fabricating a truck to the specifications of a client business, Graham and the team start with the cab and chassis and build up from there; designing the layout of the truck to accommodate the Versalift, crane or trailer. Each customer also requires certain extras, such as cab cages, hand rails and tool boxes to suit the vehicles purpose; but no matter what the job may be, whether a small repair to a domestic trailer, to the complete build of a log truck, Graham and the team are more than capable of offering safe, quality work.
What makes road transport engineering more complicated is that often the clients brief may not necessarily comply with New Zealand road regulations. It’s Graham’s job to take his customers ideas and make them fit within the space and weight that will comply with our roads. Apart from a beer at the end of the day, the team enjoys the challenge and seeing the end product work well in its field, which in turn makes a happy customer; something Graham and his team are very familiar with, and which has led to a lot of repeat work. Whether you’re a business that requires full truck fabrication, or you simply need a domestic car trailer repaired, give the boys a call today and get the best service from Active Engineering.

The top of the table clash in Nelson Netball’s Collegiate 1 grade between Waimea College 9A and Waimea College 10C was a one-sided affair with 9A beating an under-strength 10C team 40-18 at the Saxton Courts on Saturday. Waimea 9A coach, Karryn Stack says her charges have been steadily improving, and although Saturday’s game was definitely a good performance they are yet to play a consistent four quarters. The third quarter was shared five-all as the younger girls were, maybe a little complacent as they lead 22–6 at the major break, forgot to work to the game plan and “went off track”. However, the 9A’s target is to have everything coming together for the South Island Junior Tournament which is to be held in Christchurch at the beginning of July. Goal shoot Kate Dohmen was the star for 9A, scoring all but two of her team’s goals. Kate presented well to her feeders

But Kate did not have it all her own way as Kim Brockman, who gave away several centimetres in height, toiled to slow the ball down. Annaleise Ramsay’s

court time is being managed after coming back from injury and she is moving nicely to find circle edge when on the wing - she also impressed with her movement in the circle, particularly her drives along the base line, when she donned the goal attack bib. Wing defence Jamie Young had her best game of the season working tirelessly through court. She gained numerous intercepts and deflections and applied a huge amount of pressure around the circle. Anna Gaging came in for praise from her coach as she “stepped up”, while sister Kate enjoyed the extra territory she covered out at goal defence. Kate’s job was to hassle and put the shooters under pressure and she carried out the instructions to the letter. Stand-in coach for 10C, Enya Sharp said she was happy how the girls “came back” and played as a team in the second half when the score was 12–18. Goal shoot Rose Miller had a tidy game shooting 77 per cent while mid-courter Bianca Rogers worked hard as the link through court.

Waimea Old Boys Rugby
Heartbreak for Waimea as Wanderers win first club rugby title in 60 years Andrew Board The wizards have finally found the right formula. After failing to beat Waimea Old Boys in two championship games in as many years, Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers, nicknamed the Wizards, finally beat their arch-rivals 15-11 in Saturday’s Tasman Trophy final. It is the club's first major senior club rugby title in at least six decades. Star & Garter Waimea may have been unbeaten all year and they may have been playing at home, but it was Wanderers that looked the more likely all game. Playing with a strong wind at their backs in the first half, Waimea could only rack up an eight point lead at the break. Many side-line spectators felt that wasn’t enough. Wanderers captain Trael Joass says the plan was to pressure the hosts and “put them in a position they hadn’t been all year”. “We thought it was a 26 point wind so we were happy at half time,” says Trael.
Waimea threatened on a number of occasions in the second half but Wanderers dominated territory. A try in the right-hand corner to Jesse Pitman tied the game up at 8-8 after an earlier penalty goal to the visitors. Waimea took the lead again halfway through the second half, thanks to a quick-thinking dropped goal from Waimea’s halfback James Lash. But in the final ten minutes, Wanderers continued to press and midfielder Sione Holani broke through the Waimea defence and scored a spectacular try next to the posts as his team-mates swarmed him. After the successful conversion Wanderers had a 15-11 lead, which they were able to defend until the full time whistle. Trael says the win was a huge relief for his side. “It’s been a long time coming and we’ve had pressure all week from the supporters. But it’s awesome for the boys and awesome for the club. We’re got a great thing going here.”
The game doubled as a roundrobin game in the Car Company Nelson Bays division one club rugby championship, a competition Wanderers and Waimea are dominating. If form continues, the two sides will meet once again in the club rugby final next month and many rugby fans will be thrilled to watch these two sides go at it again. Waimea assistant coach Mark Milne says they’ll learn from the loss. “They deserved their win - we don’t have any excuses. We made too many mistakes and missed a couple of opportunities while they made the most of theirs. “We made some of the mistakes because they created a lot of pressure but we have to learn to deal with that pressure.” Waimea plays Kahurangi at Jubilee Park Saturday and Mark says he expects the team to bounce back from their first loss this season. “You always learn more from your loses than your wins so it’s up to us to learn from this one.”
Waimea Bs topple defending champs Waimea Old Boys senior B prevailed 12-3 in an old-school, low-scoring match at Jubilee Park on Saturday, to remain at the top of the Car Company Nelson division two championship. It was expected to be a close, hard-fought battle, with Waimea going into the game just two points clear of second-placed Wanderers, and the game lived up to those pre-match expectations. Although Waimea scored two tries, one in each half, it was their determined defence that secured the win. Waimea manager Marc Hunter says they were under pressure for long periods after going ahead 12-3 early in the second half and they needed resolute defence to keep their line intact. Marc says the first half was also a “tight forward battle with both teams not giving anything away”.
Wanderers opened the scoring with a penalty before Waimea winger Kent Yarrell made a break down the sideline to score and give his team a 5-3 lead at half time. Waimea went ahead 12-3 early in the second half when Richard Tonga made a 40m run through Wanderers backs to score under the posts. Marc says the stand-out players for Waimea were Tim Fensom, Matt Finn and Mason Thelin in the forwards and Ben Jeffery and Luke Thelin in the backs. Waimea Women: The Waimea Old Boys senior women won both their games beating Marist 52-12 and Moutere 65-0. Waimea Old Boys under-19 beat Marlborough Boys Second XV 29-17.

Special Olympics at Saxton
Students from special education classes around Nelson and Tasman played the beautiful game at Saxton Stadium last Wednesday helped by some “great kids” from Waimea College. Teams from Nayland College, Maitai School, Waimea College Tapawera Area School and Motueka High School played in the annual Special Olympics Football tournament indoors at Saxton Stadium. It was a big day out for the special education classes but it wouldn’t have been possible without help from a group of year 10 Waimea College students. The school’s year 10 junior leaders have been helping out at Special Olympic events for a number of years and Special Olympics regional co-ordinator Graeme Bain says the 20 students did a great job again last week.
“They did the refereeing and line umpiring and kept the score - they even entered a team to even-up the draw as well,” Graeme says. “They are great kids and they always do a wonderful job and are really supportive. “We did a skills session in the morning and then we are having these games this afternoon. But it’s more about getting them all together and having fun.” Waimea College year 10 student Zac Richardson-Hall says they enjoyed helping the special education soccer players who “are a big part of the school”. “I know a lot of these special education kids so it was good to be able to help them with this.” For the record, Waimea College Yellow won the division one competition while Tapawera won division two.

Bridget Budget answers your questions
Q: My partner’s hours have
been reduced and I have lost my part-time work. Now we can’t keep up with the repayments of our loans. What should we do? A: It is very important to keep up with the repayments that you have agreed to pay. If you cannot: Talk with your loan company about extending the
loan term or taking a loan holiday. Be aware that these options will cost you more in the long run. Talk to your family. Someone may be able to take over the repayments until your situation improves. Get budget advice. You may be able to get a consolidation loan (for interest bearing debts). The repayments may be less than what you are currently paying. Check that it doesn’t cost more overall. If all else fails, consider a Summary Installment Order. This is a way to pay off unsecured debt over time with no interest.
