Cellphone black spots ‘frustrating’

Wakefield residents and businesses have had enough of slow internet service and poor cellphone coverage and hope a survey being conducted by the Tasman District Council will help highlight the seriousness of the problem to the government. Council is conducting the survey of internet and mobile phone users around the district to support an application for government funding to improve those services. The government is planning to pro-

vide $50million for expanding cellphone coverage and Focus Wakefield chairperson Angela McMekin says some of that needs to be spent in their area. Angela says the Wakefield district is one of the Nelson-Tasman region’s digital black holes and that’s frustrating residents and penalising businesses. She says the problem is so bad that people are not buying or renting houses in the area because they don’t have cellphone reception.

gets a message saying he’s missed a call a day after the person phoned. He often gets clients who say ‘I called you yesterday, why didn’t you call me back?’ “I also know one woman who has to stand on her kitchen table to take a cellphone call. It’s very frustrating.” Angela says there are cellphone black spots all around the Wakefield district, including

Champions! After 60 years

Wanderers Rugby Club has won a major senior A rugby trophy for the first time in at least 60 years. Even the management at the club can’t say for sure the last time they won a top-tier title. But the six decade wait for glory ended at Jubilee Park on Saturday when Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers beat their arch-rival Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys in the Tasman Trophy final. Wanderers captain Trael Joass said the team stayed humble in victory but admitted they were feeling the pressure to win after losing two Nelson Bays club rugby title games in as many years. “It’s been a long time coming and we’ve had pressure all week from the supporters. But it’s awesome for the boys and awesome for the club. We’re got a great thing going here.” Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers celebrate winning the Tasman Trophy title against Waimea Old Boys at Jubilee Park on Saturday.
