Tapawera gets cell coverage Tapawera residents can finally “get in touch” with the outside community after Telecom came to the party, ending the town’s inability to get phone coverage. A $350,000 phone tower is up and running giving Telecom customers sufficient phone coverage within the township for the first time. It will also span six kilometers northwest of Tapawera along the Motueka Valley Highway and southeast alongside State Highway 6. Tapawera’s battle had been ongoing for the past few years and was pushed along by school student Matt Ball who lobbied a number of networks in order to get the coverage. Councillor Stuart Bryant labeled the previous situation as “frustrating” and believed the announcement is hugely

Fire-fighters save gas station The owner of Brightwater Motors says a quick response from volunteer fire-fighters prevented what could have been a very serious fire. Because the Brightwater business doubles as a petrol station, the risks increased ten fold when a spark in the back shed ignited on Friday. Tom Horncastle says there were fire-fight-

he says. “It never got to the stage where it couldn’t be controlled. If the fire brigade was another ten minutes then it might have been a different story. But it was well under control. All our staff went into the fire drill and it worked perfect.” Tom says the fire started when a mechanic was working on a motor in the back shed, which is where most of the long-term jobs

are done. “It looks like a 12volt spark ignited some fuel and then roared on from there. He grabbed a fire extinguisher but that couldn’t control it.” From there the fire caught onto Tom and his wife Melanie’s house, which was empty at the time, causing external damage on SEE PAGE 2

one side wall and the roof. The bedroom ensuite was also damaged as was the workshop in the garage. “It’s quite substantial damage really.” Peter Holland of the Wakefield Volunteer Fire Service says the fire-fighters attended the scene thinking it was a petrol station fire. “It had the potential to be very serious but it was a very good save by the first arriving appliance who stopped it from spreading to a major house fire as well,” he says. Tom says his staff had the fire under control until the firefighters got there, and was also aided by a volunteer
firefighter with a garden hose who happened to be at the Wanderers Rugby Clubrooms next door.
A fire at Brightwater Motors caused external damage to the owner’s house.
FROM PAGE 1 beneficial for Tapawera. “It means better technology, better cell phone coverage and people will be able to get in touch with the outside community,” says Stuart. “Especially for farmers like myself who were limited to having no coverage on the farm and waiting in the house for people to call back.” Stuart, whose answer phone reminds callers that he might be out of reception, says residents had waited patiently for this day ever since it came up in a community council meeting in 2011. “You’ve got to accept that there is some wait for these lower populat-
ed areas. It was one of those frustrations as soon as you got over the Spooner’s Range you had no coverage. People passing through had quite often commented on it.” A Telecom spokesperson says it made plans for a site further down the track but reassessed its options when customers, and in particular Matt, made it clear they needed improved coverage. “It’s important to Telecom that communities are able to have access to fast broadband and mobile services which are crucial for the success of rural businesses, education, health providers, and bringing rural communities together.”

‘Heroic’ rescuers If you shoes save two from car You will our sale! off ALL Andrew Board
A Brightwater man is one of four being hailed as heroes after jumping into a freezing creek and rescuing two people from a sinking car. Kyle Paki Paki was on his way to Neale Park to watch the Wanderers second division rugby team he manages play, when he saw a car speeding from Wildman Ave across QEII Dr and into the creek on the other side of the road. He says his first instinct was to follow the car. “I remember thinking ‘no, no, no’. It bounced up on the curb and just disappeared. I literally followed it. The wagon in front of me pulled over to the other side of the road but I just followed it straight where it went. I jumped out of my truck and saw it half in the water and half of it out and just pretty much ran down the bank. Took my shoes and hoodie off and jumped straight in the water.” Kyle and another man were able to pull Filemoni (Phil) Fa’avae from the car but quickly realised there was another person in the car when he yelled for his grandson. “I do remember thinking when we got the man out ‘right, the driver’s out’. But it wasn’t until

he said about his grandkid and that’s when I spotted the child who was looking at me,” he says. Kyle – in freezing water – went down several more times, eventually breaking the back passenger window with a tyre iron and unclicking the boy’s seatbelt before dragging him to safety. “Even then I thought there were only two people in the car and the grandfather was saying ‘my wife, my wife’ but because of my clothes and the cold, my legs weren’t working properly. I felt her shoulder but as I came up another gentleman said wait here and he went down and got her out.” The woman, Janice (Jan) Anne Fa’avae, aged 68, died in the incident at lunchtime on Saturday. She was the mother of multi-sport champion Nathan Fa’avae.
Nelson Fire station officer Craig Davies says the four men, including Philip Walker and Gary Miller, are heroes and their action saved two lives. “They’ve got to take the credit for their bravery and just getting in and doing it. It wouldn’t happen in every town in New Zealand or every place in the world,” he says. “Even though the tragedy of the situation meant that one died, two have been saved.” The two year old boy, Ali Fa’avae-Mika, was flown to Starship Hospital in Auckland and the man, Filemoni (Phil) Fa’avae, remains in Nelson Hospital. Kyle says the incident was “scary” and he is still shocked by what happened. He says his main thoughts are with the Fa’avae family and he was just happy that he was able to help.

MURCHISON LOTTO WINNER: A Murchison resident is $200,000 richer after winning Lotto’s first division. The winning ticket was sold at Murchison Four Square and it shared the first division with four other players.
Bars pass underage test Bars from Belgrove to Murchison have passed an underage test with flying colours. Police and Tasman District Council staff conducted a controlled purchase operation on licensed premises last weekend with not one bar selling alcohol to the minors. Two 16 year old boys were refused service
for alcohol at Murchison Four Square Supermarket, the Hampden Hotel, the Commercial Hotel, Murchison Sport, Recreation & Cultural Centre, Owen River Tavern, Kohatu Flat Rock Cafe, Tapawera Four Square Supermarket, Tapawera Hotel, and the Belgrove Inn. Liquor licensing sergeant Steve Savage says the result was fantastic and showed
that licensees in the area were taking their responsibilities seriously. Police have begun a focus on sports club bars recently and Steve says the operation was timed to coincide with a home game for the Murchison rugby team. “In the past some rural licensees have been lax in their responsibilities, but I can’t fault any of these people. It’s a fantastic result.”

Free Wi-Fi just one week away Free wireless internet is just a week away from launching in Richmond’s CBD, and some freespots are already live. Plans to rid Lake of wasps A plan to rid Nelson Lakes of wasps could gather pace at a meeting tonight with conservation group Friends of Rotoiti hoping to obtain support from the wider community. Bryce Buckland of the group, which has done predator control for the Department of Conservation and Landcare, says the plan is to help both of those organisations establish and develop a mite recently discovered on wasps, with the hope it will be a “magic bullet”. “If it’s viable we want to develop this mite and introduce it in ar-
eas where wasps are really bad like Nelson Lakes National Park,” he says. “People hate wasps. They’re bad for walkers, trampers and tourism. They’re also bad for people with forestry companies, the grape industry and really bad for the honey industry.” Bryce even went as far as saying wasps do nothing good for the environment at all. “They don’t have anything that’s good. They take all the food out of the food chain at the same time the birds are eating it and they take all the honey.” But the project is still in the early stages
and more information is needed on the origin of the mite, how it might affect bees and the cost of the wasp control. “We don’t want to develop this and find it’s detrimental to the other species in that area.” Even without all of the information, Bryce concedes that it could be an expensive process. “It will be. But it’ll be two or three years of research to find out whether this is good or not, whether we can develop it and that of course will cost money.” Landcare is likely to apply for funding from the sustainable funding grant and
Bryce was hopeful that by having some local organisations on board there would be more weight behind any application. “Forestry companies might say ‘look we lost of a lot of production last year because we had to pull gangs out of the forest when the wasps got too bad’ and they may come to the party. Initially we want letters of support.” The idea behind the meeting, which is being held at the National Party rooms at 544 Waimea Rd from 5:15pm tonight, was to get a gauge on the level of support.
Art expo draws 5000 people More than $100,000 worth of local art went out the door of the Trafalgar Centre during Art Expo Nelson. The three day expo saw more than 120 artists exhibit work with around 120 pieces selling. It was the second year the expo has been held and organiser Louise Allan says it was bigger than last year and was a “huge success”. “Last year we had about 3500 people and this year was more than 4500 so we’re really happy with how it went.” The expo opened on Friday – a day earlier than last year – but Louise says Sunday was the most popular day with a lot of art sold. “A lot of people came in on the Friday or Saturday and came back to buy the piece they wanted on Sunday, so that was really good.”

Three chases in one night A man was put in hospital after a stolen ute occupied by two 16 year olds crashed into him early Sunday. The crash was during a police chase that started after they tried to stop the vehicle in Richmond. The youths continued along Whakatu Dr to Waimea Rd and then to Main Rd Stoke where the driver lost control and crashed into a car coming the other way. The boys were taken into custody after the crash and are assisting police with their enquiries. Both vehicles were extensively damaged. In other, unrelated, incidents two Nel-

Councillor Judene Edgar will be taking part in the inaugural Silent Leadership Challenge next month, a hearing loss challenge for corporate and community leaders to raise awareness and funds for The National Foundation for the Deaf. Throughout the day Judene will undertake four challenges which include a one-to-one meeting, team meeting, social get-together and watching television at home – all while wearing ear protectors to simulate deafness, robbing her of her full ability to communicate. to avoid detection. On both occasions police carried out enquires immediately after the abandoned pursuits which led to the drivers being identified, the cars impounded, and charges being laid. “It’s incredibly disappointing to see drivers taking such risks that have a potential to end in disaster”, says Sergeant Shane Miles, of Nelson. “Drivers falling to stop for police need to seriously consider whether it’s worth the risk. They may get away in the short term but we are absolutely committed to road safety and holding feeling drivers accountable.”

In the first incident, at about 8.20pm, a Nissan car was “clocked” travelling in excess of 150 kilometres per hour on the state highway through Brightwater and subsequently failed to stop for police. A short pursuit followed but was abandoned due to the risk to public safety before the vehicles got to Richmond. School hasn’t lost its marbles Sinead Ogilvie Reporter
reporter@nelsonweekly.co.nz Remember bombers? How about queenies, steelies and kingies? Hit one get them all? Well it’s a wrap for marble season at Henley School and hundreds of students have been taking part in the traditional game. Students at the school have been losing their marbles over the game for at least two decades says long-time teacher and deputy principal Eric Gardner, who says he can’t remember a time during his spell at the school where students didn’t play marbles. Because marble season for the school includes just the last week of each term, Eric believes they are a bit of a novelty which has aided in the longevity of the game. “It’s a novelty, they’re like a collectable and it’s fun, it’s different, it involves everyone. There are juniors right through to seniors all playing marbles together. I would say on a good day you’d have half the school playing and in our school there are over 500 students.” The reason for the shortened season, is to keep it as “something special” he says. “Last term I forgot and I got a little note from one of the juniors asking whether they could have marbles. But it’s supposed to be a routine so at the next assembly I announced that I had rung the ‘ministry of marbles’ and they’ve given
Henley School students Merle Todt, 10, Grace Kaveney and Erena Robinson, both 9, play marbles during marble week. Photo: Phillip Rollo. us permission to have marble season again. This time round the assembly cheered.” Henley School students aren’t alone, with the classic game failing to die out at Hampden St School too says deputy principal Katherine Barris. She says marble season snowballs in popularity and she expects it to do the same this year, with the beginning of their season announced at a school assembly on Friday. “Normally on the first day you’ll have
two or three groups playing, then all of a sudden we’ll have the whole school out there playing marbles.” She says in spite of more technologically advanced toys available to kids, the old school game continues to maintain its popularity among students. “They love it. It’s a simple, basic toy that is affordable for everybody.” Principal Don McLean says marble season is “part of the fabric of the school” and is mostly self-governed by the students, with guidance from teachers.

Cruising from Auckland What comes to mind when someone mentions cruise holidays? Do you think of constantly changing scenery, interesting ports of call, fabulous food, great entertainment, safe and supervised activities for the kids, fun and games by the pool, relaxing on a deck chair and spa treatments - cruising is all this and much more! Read on to find out why the team at Harvey World Travel Richmond love cruise holidays! Tim Dunnill and Vicky McLean
More kiwis are taking cruise holidays than ever before, and for good reason - they’re a great way to see the world, to relax, have fun and to make new friends. Often when we suggest a cruise holiday, we hear three common reasons why people hesitate on the idea; “I’ll get bored”. It’s virtually impossible to be bored on a cruise ship - we know as we’ve been on a few. The options to fill your day on any cruise ship are endless. There’s always something to do or see; browse the shops, use the gym, have a spa treatment - you’d be surprised what you can do at sea! “I’ll get sea sick”. We can’t guarantee you won’t, but an injection is available from the ship’s doctor that will have you back on your feet pretty quickly. “Cruises are expensive”. There are cruises for virtually all budgets, from modest to luxury, it’s all available. Talk to us about your holiday budget and to compare options. Come in store and Tim will tell you how he met one of his best friends 12 years ago at his dinner table on the first night of the first cruise he ever did!
Pacific Pearl Fun!

Should the earthquake risk of the A&P stands be made public? No why bother - 6 per cent. Geez, of course they should tell them - if there was a decent earthquake it would fall down! Sue Smith.
Car seats for 7 year olds: Next they will want seat belts in school buses. Russ Jones
No! It has survived for many years with hundreds and hundreds of punters jumping up and down with excitement or sorrow and will continue to do so for many years yet. David Jeffery.
That plus having seat belts in buses would be awesome! Car seats are important for your children’s safety. Schools/people shouldn’t be complaining about it. Doesn’t matter what distance you are travelling, people can still pull out in front of you (having seatbelts across kids necks, very life threatening, especially if you have to break suddenly). Jennie Teece.
Not sure that would be of any use. Maybe planning to strengthen the structure in case of an earthquake would work better than a sign tell us that it may fall if there is one!! And if it is that dangerous then it should not be in use. Chris Williams. Pig dog trackers: Hopefully some one finds a good solution as Garmin Astro & DC30 -40 & 50 collars would also largely benefit SAR workers with locating their rescue dogs faster and also be of great value to all the men and women doing animal control up and down the country for the likes of DOC, council and forestry. Maybe one day soon an App will come out where we can track our hounds on our Androids or iPhones so we won’t be having to even have this discussion. Clay (via website).

Light festival launched Nelson’s newest art festival launched on Thursday night with lanterns and the wishes of local children setting sail across the pond at Queens Gardens. Hundreds of children from around the region took part in the Float A Wish event, the opening of the Light Nelson festival which will take place this weekend. The event saw children of all ages construct and float biodegradable lanterns in the pond, with each holding a “wish” for their community. Organiser Clint Fern says he was “absolutely delighted” with the event and that he never expected it to be so successful. “It was everything we could have hoped for, it was fantastic. It was great to have such a huge involvement from the community.” Students from Tasman School, Hira School and Nelson Central School were invited to participate. They used materials such as flax, branches, paper and string to build their lanterns. Julie Vlugter brought her daughter along to the event and says she thought it was “really great”. “It’s been really nice, it would be a good thing to have every year.” Light Nelson will run this weekend between July 19 and 21 with free light installations and light Kobi Furniss, 9, takes part in the Float a Wish event on exhibitions by local artists to be Thursday night. Wood burner issues
Richmond Lions club membership chairperson Ivan Burrowes congratulates new president Alex Robertson who took over the role at the beginning of this month. Alex was previously the vice president of the group, whose motto “We Serve” saw them raise more than $10,000 last year for local community groups and charities. The group is currently operating on a 20 person strong membership but are always looking for more members. All that is needed to join is a will-
ingness to do voluntary work in the community. Richmond Lions hope to achieve two goals this year and that is to increase membership, and ask for more input from the community to clearly identify charity groups who are in need. To find out more about joining the Richmond Lions head along to one of their meetings, which are held one the first and third Tuesday of each month at the Senior Citizens Hall on Oxford St, or phone 541 9689.

Ford owners to celebrate birthday It’s fair to say Colin Baigent loves Ford. With car memorabilia shelved neatly across his garage including posters all the way up to the roof, it’s obvious he is a car man. But ever since Colin was a boy, it was mainly just Fords that caught his attention. “I’ve always loved the rally heritage of the Ford Escort,” he says, tapping on a rally poster stuck to the wall. “I’ve always loved listening to the sound of rally cars going through the forest. There’s nothing like it.” Despite his passionate support for Fords, he only bought his first one just four years ago – a 1981 Ford
Escort 1600 Sport. “This is my first one. I always thought I wanted one of these and this is my baby.” Now a member of the Nelson Classic Ford Car Club, Colin and hundreds of other Ford lovers will be heading out to Rabbit Island for the annual celebration of Henry Ford’s birthday. This year’s event will be held on July 28 from 11am. Anyone with a Ford is welcome to attend. There will be a barbecue with sausages for sale. “Any cars can come out for a cruise too which is cool. Henry Ford has a huge significance and it’s great to see so many people celebrate it.”

For many, many years I have had an overwhelming compassion and love for animals, their care and the quality of their life. I want them to feel loved and give them everything possible to see their waggy tails go mad! I have internationally recognised qualifications in both pet care and animal behaviour. Animals are my world and enrich my life amazingly with all the trust they give, only asking for care and loving treatment in return, they are the best!”
Gordon Hill, a dog trainer with 20 years’ experience and a registered NZQA assessor, has seen plenty of examples of poor dog handling as a direct result of even worse dog training. Too many people aren’t getting the right training for their dogs and while his job as a dog behaviorist is to fix problem dogs, Gordon urges local owners to start as they mean to go on with their puppy or new dog. There are a variety of dog trainers in Nelson, but they aren’t all experts, so make sure you ask the right questions before enrolling. Gordon also wants to alert people to the significant role a dog’s diet can play in his longevity of life. “My advice? Feed your dog as natural diet as possible. A study found the Dingo to be the healthiest dog in the world. It scavenges and eats meat and is the healthiest dog on the planet, what does that tell us?

Second hand books raise funds The Holy Trinity Church in Richmond is set to hold its seventh annual book fair this weekend and a great turnout is expected says coordinator Shiona Frengley. The church holds the second hand book bonanza each year in order to make books more accessible to people from all walks of life, and if they can fundraise for the church at the same time it’s even better says Shiona. At least 3000 books will be up for grabs this time round, highlighting the continued support of the event says Shiona. “It’s amazing how many books come in from the community.
Sinead Ogilvie Reporter
reporter@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Donations have come from people both in and outside of the church.” Despite the high number of books that are donated to the event, Shiona says very little will end up in the tip with the majority leftovers to be donated to the Founders Book Fair. Proceeds from the event will go towards building a new hall for the church, whose current one has no insulation. While the cost of the building is around $1.2 million, the event is never about
making money says Shiona. “It’s about people picking up a bargain more than anything, making books available to people at a knocked down price. We just want people to have great books for next to nothing. It’s important for kids to have books, be able to read and to learn to look after books. It’s just a lovely thing to do.” She says over the years the fair has been “very well supported” and welcomes the public to either donate to the cause this week by dropping by the church on Thursday or Friday or to come along to the event this Saturday between 10am and 1pm.

He stocks a huge range of accessories, from 4×4 recovery gear, winches and roof racks to simple items that can make a 4wd of any style safer and more comfortable, no matter what you use your 4WD for. The 4×4 centre is also your one stop specialist roof rack supplier. Known as Roof Racks Nelson, the business sells and fits Nelson's most comprehensive range from well known names such as Rhino-Rack, Thule and Prorack. The range includes roof racks, roof bars, luggage and ski boxes, luggage trays, kayak cradles and cycle racks. While the majority of their client’s are based in Nelson city, having a home in the middle of both town means the Newport brothers, Scotty and Mark can now meet the needs of a wider client base. “We are committed to our existing clients in Nelson, but can now expand into the wider region too, which we see as a huge positive” says Scotty. It’s been a tough job moving their gear in, but the duo are now fully set up in the workshop and the new space is definitely working out for them. So whether it is a tow bar, a ute deck, or any small engineering job for commercial or privately owned vehicles, Newport Light Engineering are the go to guys, and their new premises makes it easier to service the engineering needs of the Nelson Tasman region.

Preseason Party
A white baiters preseason get together will be held on Sunday 18 August 2pm onwards with nibbles and entertainment by Bill McKenzie. Dave Heyward from Stirling Sports will be there with everything you need to get up for the season with nets, traps and clothing for sale. Come along and see who can tell the biggest fisherman’s story.
Special General Meeting
On Sunday July 28 at 4pm, there will be a Special General Meeting held at Club Waimea. The purpose for this meeting is for three reasons. One is to introduce the successful directors to the membership, and the second is to revisit Rule.9 (d) ‘voting times’. The third purpose is to revisit Rule 11(e) ‘restrictions placed on the vice- president.’ Line dancing at Club Waimea is becoming increasingly popular.
Loyalty Vouchers
On Friday August 2, Toni Lane manager of the Nelson Building Society Richmond, will be at Club Waimea at 6pm to draw out the lucky winner of the redeemed loyalty voucher draw. This prize is valued at $500. You must be at Club Waimea at the time of the draw in order to claim your prize. The Nelson Building Society is Club Waimea`s preferred banker and the support that they have given the club is very, very much appreciated so we ask that in turn, all members support this draw.
Members Draw
On the June 20, member No.1162 wasn’t present for the draw and missed out on a $600 prize. On June 27, member No.1649 missed out on a $700 prize. On July 4, member No.1400 was not present for the draw and missed out on an $800 prize. On July 11, member No.364 was not present and a $900 prize stayed put. Be in to win, it could be you next.
Line dancing success Sioux Line Dance has been a sports section of Club Waimea for just two months, starting its beginner classes in April. At the helm is line dance instructor Sue Wilson. Sue has a background in dance beginning at age five years old and is a qualified teacher and adjudicator in highland and national dancing as well as tap dancing. She has been involved as a teacher of line dancing and clogging for the last 20 years and has achieved acknowledge-
ment within the line dance arena, as a teacher, choreographer and DJ over recent years. She was also the recipient of a Special Recognition award for services to line dancing in NZ. Line dance classes at Club Waimea are well attended and Wednesday night is a great night to be at the Club. The section is all about fun, friendship and fitness, all of which is enjoyed by participants with enthusiasm. Having taught at the Club Waimea 12 years ago, Sue says it is “nice to return and again be part of this organisation. Line dancing is no longer strictly country; we Super Cheap Books dance to all types of music. If it has a good beat, if it has a good English Sweets & Groceries

feel, we will dance to it.” Sue says for some reason line dancing has not attracted a lot of men. “Having said that we have six couples which is great, it gives the class a good balance.” At the end of August the section will have its second Friday night line dance class and social event, which has attracted interest from other groups from both Marlborough and the West Coast. “It is rewarding to teach, guide and watch a non dancer who states they have two left feet.” Give it a go. Come join the Sioux line dancers every Wednesday evening at 6.30pm.

Wakefield Market celebrates milestone Celebrating time
The Wakefield Village Green has long been home to the local village market, and on Saturday it celebrated its 9th birthday. The Wakefield Market happens on the second Saturday of each month and has always been well supported by the local community who not only bring along their goods to sell, but come along to shop too. Local hazelnut grower Irene Hickford was at the milestone market day and says she has been a regular at the event for the past five years. She first attended as a show of support to other locals who attended, but says she now sets up
her stall each month because she enjoys catching up with the other stallholders, and talking to the local shoppers. “It’s actually very fun, everybody talks to you. It’s a nice event.” While the market has its regulars, it continues to attract new stallholders all the time, with Ron Withers, attending the market for the first time on Saturday. He set up shop selling picture frames and other knick knacks and says he enjoys the socialising that can be had at that type of event. “It’s the meeting people that’s nice about it. Everybody is very friendly.”

in the spotlight
Edward St in Wakefield is set to be a household name thanks to your local Four Square owners Stuart and Jacqui Hore, but they weren’t alone in their efforts in putting the village of Wakefield on the map and they would love to say a huge thank you to the community who helped make it happen. Wakefield’s main street was descended upon by film crews who created a series of TV advertisements in the town, focussed around Wakefield Four Square, which was chosen out of every other Four Square in the South Island to be the subject of the latest advertising campaign for Four Square. The advertisements will showcase the little big supermarkets that can be found in most towns around the country and Stuart says both he and Jacqui were ecstatic to put Wakefield in the spotlight. “The finished product is something the local community should be extremely proud of. We are thrilled that our Four Square here in Wakefield was chosen to be in the ads, and even more excited that we have been able to share this experience with the community here.” More than 12 people from the Tasman area were chosen to feature in the adverts that depict the integral role the Four Square store plays within its community including Wakefield school students, several groups and businesses including a hair salon, the Town and Country Vet and the volunteer fire brigade. The advertisements were unveiled at a red carpet premier event held at the Village hall two weeks ago, and will be broadcast on regional TV over the coming weeks, months and years.

Donation much appreciated
The Pigeon Valley Steam Museum supporters are extremely grateful to those that participated in the Wakefield Boar Hunt and the organisers of the event after they were given the proceeds of the event. A sum of $500 was generously given to the organisation and Merton Brown, president of the engine and machinery section says the group are
all very pleased with the donation. ‘Like any organization, we are always grateful when a bit of dosh comes our way, so it was very much appreciated that the organisers of the event chose to give it to us.” The funds will go towards wither a restoration project or the construction of a shed for the group to use says Merton.
“Meet you at the Four Square”
Wakefield School students, Dylan Elwood, 11, Mackenzie Gale, 10, and Neve Lloyd, 9, alongside the rest of their Room 2 classmates, will be featuring in the Waimea Weekly’s Focus on Wakefield feature as reporters this year. Photo: Sinead Ogilvie.
Thank you Wakefield!
Young writers to shine in Weekly Budding writers will be keeping locals up with the play of what is happening in their community when they contribute to Waimea Weekly’s Focus on Wakefield feature. Wakefield School students are excited to announce that they will be the eyes and ears at their school for the c o m mu n i t y, and will be reporting the different news that is happening in and around their classrooms. The class will take it in turns as groups to contribute to their new column, which will appear each month in the Waimea Weekly feature as a fun way for the students to hone their writing and communication skills. Items the students will be cover-
ing will be things such as sports events, social events and hot topics such as the upcoming science fair that already has everyone talking. The students say they are excited to share their writing with the public, gain confidence and “develop writing skills and learn more descriptive words.” Deputy Principal Sue McLaren says the idea behind the students reporting the latest news from on the ground within the schools is to make the most of an opportunity to “write with a purpose”. Keep an eye out each month in Focus on Wakefield for the Wakefield School news column, and support the students in their writing aspirations.

Party games: Balloon Sandwich 1. Begin by choosing partners and lining them up back to back at a starting line. Place a balloon between their backs so that they must hold it there and not let it fall to the ground (emphasize no hands!). 2. At the sound of a whistle, the pairs must take off in this position, shuffling their way toward a finish line. If the balloon pops or drops, they must return to the starting line for a replacement. 3. The first sandwich to cross the line wins.

them, right? Not if you do it just so! Here’s how your child can perform this fun feat. 1. First, blow up the balloons to equal size. Set a rimmed baking sheet on top of them, bottom up. 2. Now have your child position one foot in the center of the sheet –thereby evenly distributing the pressure – and then slowly step on with her full weight. It’s a wobbly undertaking, for sure (an adult should serve as a spotter), but our testers reported that even a 125-pound parent climbed on without a pop.

Crunch time for rugby teams The area’s top two rugby teams will each host a semi final of the Nelson Bays club rugby competition this Saturday. Waimea Old Boys finished as top qualifier and will host Kahurangi at Jubilee Park while Wanderers finished second on the table and will host defending champions Nelson at Brightwater.
The winners of the two games will then face off in the final of the Car Companysponsored competition at Trafalgar Park the following week. Waimea secured its place on top of the round robin table after beating Kahurangi 40-23 on Saturday. Waimea’s points came from tries to James Lowe (2), Connor Tra-
then and Joe Higgins, while Billy Guyton kicked eight shots at goal, including five penalties. Wanderers confirmed its home semi with a strong 42-7 win over Stoke at Brightwater and will be aiming for redemption after Nelson controversially beat Wanderers in the final of the Tasman Trophy competi-
tion last month. Both semi finals kick off at 3pm. The semi finals of the third division competition are also being played this weekend. At 1.15pm on Saturday, Tapawera will host Rangers and at 2.45pm Marist will host Stoke at Trafalgar Park.

All of the forwards put their hand up and carried strong.” While the club season is now over, a select few will still carry on playing with the Town vs Country match and Tasman Titans representative fixtures being the focus in the coming weeks.

The planned trip to D’urville Island last weekend was cancelled a few days out with, 3m swells and 30 knot plus winds predicted. Reps chase national title
Phillip Rollo Reporter

Two Tasman hockey players are in Hamilton this week vying for the national Under-18 championship with the Capital team. Hugh Hendrickson, 16, and Lauren McMahon, 17, were the only players from within the Hockey Nelson catchment chosen in the Wellington based men’s and women’s teams. The pair, who have been regulars in Nelson rep teams since they were children, are hoping to use the national tournament to impress New Zealand selectors who are picking a Tiger Turf Under-18 squad at its completion. “I want to make the New Zealand squad probably next year,” says Hugh. “It’ll be great to have some experience at this level. There are about five New Zealand players in my team. This is a massive step up.” The defender says it is tough being the only Nelson player in the men’s squad, which was mainly made up of Wellington players. “Yeah just with trainings being the only one. It means I have to go train with the Nelson rep team. I’ve been up to Wellington about three times in the past six weeks for training camps and a few little games.” Lauren, who was selected in an initial Capital Under-21 squad

Richmond still top div 1 table Andrew Board Richmond Athletic will go into its final game of the first division season with a three point buffer but remain far from confident of walking away champions. Queen St Pharmacy Richmond were held to a 1-1 draw with second-placed FC Nelson Sprig & Fern at Jubilee Park on Saturday and face third placed Nelson College this Saturday at Broads. But both FC Nelson and Nelson College have two games still to play, meaning that both teams could catch Richmond to claim the title. That scenario is one that Richmond coach Marc Evans is very aware of. “Fortunately these teams have to sort each other out, they have play each other so something has to happen there. We have to play college this Saturday, if we can get a win there then we are looking good,” says the first year coach, who has had a big impact on the team since signing on weeks before the start of the season. Richmond appears to be in good form as well, despite the loss of several players throughout the season. It was the better side on Saturday, aiming to play the ball on the ground and skip around the bigger and older FC Nelson players, which created several goal scoring opportunities. The central midfield combination of Mike Camp-
bell and Daryl Fenemor were standouts for the hosts, controlling possession and releasing the younger players around them. New recruit Ashley Langbein was also impressive on the left wing and scored Richmond’s comeback goal in the first half. Nigel Muir was called into central defence to contain Nelson’s tall strikers and did a “sterling” job with Marc open in his praise. “In the past FC Nelson have lived off our mistakes, especially at the back so I called Nigel for his height and strength, we had the young guys around him that could clean up the ball but Nigel did a sterling job, he cut out everything in the air and he was a rock for us at the back.” Marc says he’s pleased with the way the team have performed so far this year and has enjoyed his first taste of Nelson football. “There have been positives and negatives, I’ve found the refereeing standard could be improved and I’m used to a league with 18 teams. But this competition is keenly contested and every game has history involved and every game is like a derby game so it’s more intense.” He says his goal at the start of the year was for the team to do better than it did last year, when it finished mid-table. If Richmond win Saturday’s 3pm match against Nelson College at Broads it will not only improve on last year’s results, it will go a long way to winning the league.

Zoe keen to remain with Tactix Phillip Rollo
The curtain has only just closed on the 2013 ANZ Championship but Nelson’s Zoe Walker has already pledged her future to the EasiYo Tactix – well, informally anyway. The former Waimea College student was a regular in the Canterbury side during her inaugural season but is now off contract. Despite this, Zoe hopes her first year efforts were enough to cement a spot in the squad long term. “I really loved being in the team this year so Canterbury is some-
where I definitely want to stick around,” she says. “There were a lot of players in the team that were in their first year so if we keep the bulk of us together then it could be something exciting in the future.” Thrown in the deep end on debut, Zoe was marking Silver Fern sharpshooter Irene Van Dyk at the Trafalgar Centre. While the Tactix received a heavy defeat in that game, Zoe put in a credible shift, highlighted by an impressive block on the 211 cap international. With two games played in Nel-
son this season, you would assume Zoe would have revelled with the hometown crowd cheering her name, but the 19 year old admits it probably made her even more nervous. “I don’t know if I’d say it made it easier, I was petrified but it was cool to have the first game in Nelson.”

After playing 13 games, including ten starts, Zoe was clearly pleased with the faith shown in her by coach Leigh Gibbs, even though she was the youngest member of the squad. “I thought I’d just get a quarter here, a quarter there but to get the amount of court time I did was quite surprising. I was very lucky.” And as for the Tactix record of two wins and 11 losses, Zoe admits it was a tough season for the team. “Obviously the disappointment is something that you don’t like to get used to. Even though there were so many challenging times we stuck together as a group really well, supported each other and I think that’s what kept us going. It was definitely challenging, frustrating but you just have to learn from it.” But overall, looking back to where she was last year, struggling to contain the tall timber in an under-21 international against Australia, Zoe believes she has come along way. “The amount I’ve learnt this year I’m going to benefit from hugely. I went down to watch the Waimea College girls last week and it’s kind of weird thinking that this was me just a couple of years ago. It feels like a lifetime ago that I was playing for school but this has just happened so fast and you don’t really get time to look back at it.” Zoe will now look towards the World Under-21 Netball Championship in Scotland in August. With a few niggling injuries, she has decided to pull out of a national under-23 competition to focus solely on getting to Glasgow.

Champions again
Waimea Old Boys have won the women’s rugby competition for the fourth year running after beating Stoke at Jubilee Park on Saturday. Undefeated all season, it was fair to say that Waimea were the clear favourites going into the game and were the first to put points on the board after a Jessica Foster penalty kick. But Waimea were made to work, especially in the final ten minutes of the CHAMPIONS: Waimea Old Boys women’s team celebrate winning the 2013 Nelson Bays club championship over Stoke match when Stoke were at Jubilee Park on Saturday. line with the hosts protecting a slender 15-11 lead. Waimea held on though and coach Kane Hart summed up the winning formula after the full time whistle. “Defence mate, defence, we’re rapt. For the last three finals I’ve been a part of, they’ve been very, very close. Stoke are always a formidable side and although we beat them during the season, that counted for nothing today.” Waimea’s player of the day was Penny Stickney.
WOB duo added to Makos squad
Kaide Whiting and Billy Guyton are two late inclusions in the Tasman Makos squad for the 2013 ITM Cup campaign. The Waimea Old Boys duo join James Lowe and Tevita Cabuvati in the team which was officially announced this week. Kaide, 22, has been a regular feature at halfback for Waimea since leaving school and represented the Makos on five occasions back in 2010. With a season ending injury ruling Shawn Begg out of contention, Kaide has been given the nod to challenge incumbent halfback Mark Swanepool who arrives via the Brumbies and a stint with Canterbury. Kaide, who played alongside Billy, James and fellow Makos Mitchell Scott and Tom Marshall in the 2008 Nelson College first XV, says he was looking forward to getting another shot at ITM Cup level. “I’ve set myself the goal to push for the number one spot and I think the squad is looking pretty sharp.”
SG
Meanwhile the Waimate born Billy, 23, has benefited from a couple of seasons in the Heartland Championship with North Otago, saying it helped him “grow up”. “When I was here last time I was probably enjoying being young just a little bit too much,” he says. “I went down there to get some exposure but it helped me grow up as a player and just mature more.” Billy decided to return to Nelson for this year’s club rugby season and the move has clearly paid off, being named as one of six newcomers in the Makos squad. “I wasn’t confident [I’d make the squad] but I was willing to work for it. It’s a big thing and you don’t get many chances at this level.” Although capable of playing a number of positions in the backline, Billy sees himself as more of a first five, and will contest the number ten jersey with Hayden Cripps and another newcomer, Mike Wells.
