The forest fire concert on Saturday was a fantastic success, organisers say. People from all over the region had the chance to come and say thanks to the first responders and volunteers who helped fight the Pigeon Valley fire in February. Nearly 3000 people turned up

to the concert, held at the A&P showgrounds on Lower Queen Street on Saturday afternoon, and organiser Steve Page said that the event was ‘thoroughly successful, so many strangers came up to say thanks and the support, as usual, was amazing.” The concert was headlined by The Warratahs, supported by local bands including Nelson Jazz club big band, Bo Kay, Dust & Gold, and Nine95. ‘The Warratahs were

just fantastic, and some good local artists got some good exposure as well.” Steve said, “Smiley and the sound team also did an incredible job.” Nearly $14,000 was raised all together, and the concert was free for first responders and those who volunteered during the fires. Steve said that people were particularly impressed with the firefighters from Appleby who turned up and embraced the af-

ternoon, “big ups to the Appleby fire brigade, it was great to see them turn up in the spirit that the concert was intended, its obvious that they have a great culture.” Steve wanted to thank the sponsors that made the concert possible, with the primary sponsors NBS and the local papers Waimea Weekly, Nelson Weekly, Marlborough Weekly, and The Guardian Motueka. “Also, a big thanks to community groups like Rotary

and Richmond Unlimited, who helped out on the day.” “No doubt about it, the concert achieved what it set out to do. The silent auction was also a big success” Tasman Trailers donated a 7x4 caged trailer, Discover New Zealand provided a week’s campervan use and the Richmond Mall provided mall vouchers to go towards the silent auction.

Fire concert a roaring success

Intermediate farewells long-serving teacher Waimea Intermediate farewelled deputy principal Trish Smith last Friday after 27 years’ service at the school A special assembly was held to mark the occasion, with current and past pupils – including some now at Waimea College along with former teachers joining together to wish her well in her retirement. Past and present pupils put on a range of singing, dancing and kapa haka performances to show their appreciation of Trish’s contribution to the school over the years. School principal Justine McDonald says the farewell brought mixed emotions. While the school community was thrilled that Trish will be joining her husband, Darryl, in his ‘retirement fun,’ it was sad to be losing an amazing pro-

fessional who has been 100 per cent committed to intermediate-age students, building the right environment and teaching skills in others required for students to experience success. During her career at Waimea Intermediate School, Trish has taken on a wide range and variety of roles in the school, starting out as a classroom teacher, followed by a promotion to syndicate leader and then deputy principal. “We wish Trish all the very best for the up-coming changes to lifestyle after 48 years in the education profession – we will miss you, your calmness and wealth of experience. “Thanks for contributing to the Waimea Intermediate School learning community and teaching generations of our people.”

The Warratahs stayed with Steve and his wife Jenny for the weekend, and Steve said they ‘thoroughly enjoyed’ having them. “Barry [of The Warratahs] was just so taken with Wakefield and Pigeon Valley, he thought it was one of the most beautiful parts of the country. I almost think he might come back down here and live” The Warratahs said that the attitude and energy from people who turned up to enjoy the event was ‘absolutely amazing.’ “It was, in fact, something quite special, that was genuinely noticeable,” said Barry. Asked what the highlight was, Steve said it was on a couple of fronts. “The genuine input by a lot of the companies involved was actually very humbling and I loved seeing the folk up in front of the stage dancing and smiling. When I saw that I thought that my team and I had won. We achieved what we all set out to do”

Arson suspected Matt McCrorie It is believed that arson is to blame for the burnt-out car found sitting in a Richmond car park last Thursday morning. The car, a green 1995 Honda CRV, was discovered in the Petrie Car Park in Richmond behind Sundial Square by local business owners early Thursday morning, after the car had been been set ablaze at around 4am that morning. Cash’n’Trade Richmond have said that they do not know who owns the car and that they have no affiliation with the car,

but an nearby worker said that the car had been parked in the Cash’n’Trade car park for nearly a week before it was set on fire. “We were very concerned when we came in this morning. If the wind had picked it up it could have taken out several businesses in the area. We’ve seen this happen before in the last 18 months.” Richmond volunteer firefighters were called out to the blaze at around 4.25am on Thursday, and the police were also notified. According to a police spokesperson, the incident appeared suspicious but neither the car owner or business own-

er made a complaint to police so it is not being investigated. Cash’n’Trade Richmond said that last Saturday night a rock was thrown through the front window of the store, shattering the glass. A nearby business owner is concerned, saying that for the past several weeks suspiciouslooking men have been loitering in the Petrie Car Park and around where the burnt-out car was found. Witnesses have spotted several men looking through cars parked behind Cash’n’Trade, opening car bonnets, including the Honda CRV that was burnt.

Matt McCrorie The Richmond Creative fibre group has been busier than usual over the last few months, working hard to prepare for the ‘Runway.’ The group is part of a nationwide organisation that aims to bring together people with a passion for fibre crafts and textile arts. Spinners, weavers, knitters, dyers, flat workers, felters, crocheters and other makers of all skill levels. The Creative Fibre group is part of the national society and has entered the organisations national Runway challenge. The challenge takes place every two years and is part of the Creative Fibre national exhibition. The exhibition features the runway fashion show, and includes workshops, lectures, trades and displays. The exhibition also sees local creative fibre groups create their own streetwear-like runway design, to be presented at the national competition in Palmerston North. There are 13 groups nationwide that will be competing in the national runway challenge, presenting their finished products to be modelled for one night.

Several recent accidents on local roads have police reminding motorists to remain vigilant. That means putting down the phone and focusing on your surroundings. There have been several recent accidents in the area, with two fatal crashes and several serious injuries. A cyclist, Ann Rigg, was killed in an accident out of Nelson, and Douglas Carter lost his life in Brightwater in a motorbike accident. A three-car accident on Whakatu drive left two people injured, along with two accidents on State Highway 60 only 90 minutes apart. Area Commander Inspector Paul Borrell said the Nelson and Tasman community is hurting following the recent deaths of a motorcyclist and a cyclist in crashes over the past fortnight. “This is even more of a concern as we head into the Easter school holidays and the winter months.” “Current indications are that a significant number of serious injury and fatal crashes

New bus stop The bus stop on Queen Street in Richmond has been moved from outside the police station to further up the street, just outside The Warehouse, opposite the Tasman District Council main entrance. The new bus stop provides significantly more room for both buses and waiting passengers and will hopefully help with traffic congestion outside the police station, the council’s community relations manager Chris Choat says. He says the old bus shelter outside the police station will be taken down and put into storage so that it can be used in the future when the need arises. “As Richmond is growing, we will have a greater need for public transport and additional bus shelters, so it will be saved until such a time.” In response to concerns from the public that the bus stop is too long and has taken away valuable car parks, Chris says “The change of the bus stop location was done at no loss to the number of parks, they are being reinstated at the old stop site, they are now closer to the majority of the shops. The new bus stop is as long as needed to be able to manage the buses turning into and exiting the stop safely.”

Music mentor lends a hand Matt McCrorie New Zealand musician Jimmy Christmas was at Waimea College last week, working with student bands to help them develop their abilities and sound. Jimmy is the former singer/ guitarist for the internationally-successful New Zealand garage rockers, The D4, who combine melodic choruses, loud guitars and glam swagger to create larger-than-life rock madness. He later went on to form the band Luger Boa, a “pop-oriented” rock band, opening for both Kings of Leon and Meatloaf. Jimmy visited Waimea as part of the Musicians Mentoring in Schools Programme, which began in 2001. The programme aims to connect New

Zealand’s top musicians with thousands of young, talented, emerging music students in schools across the country. More the 150 musicians at 65 schools have been involved in the programme. Its aim is to raise student engagement and skills in music performance, songwriting and composition. Jimmy has been mentoring students through it since 2006. “This is by far the most rewarding experience that I have in music.” Jimmy says, speaking about his years as a music mentor. “Over the years I’ve been doing it I’ve seen the music departments develop, and foundations built for kids to be encouraged.” One aspect that Jimmy is particularly passionate about is songwriting. “Songwriting

feeds into other avenues, it gives kids a chance to find a voice, to find their voice. I’ve worked with a lot of songwriters, and some of my biggest jumps in songwriting have been when I’ve had exposure to talented songwriters who have shown me how to do different things, so that’s what I’m aiming to do.” Waimea’s head music teacher, Nick Sharpe, says that the experience was a great way for students to learn. “It really just gets them to raise their game, learning from someone who knows the tips and tricks. I can tell them the same thing 50 times, but sometimes they won’t hear it. This year the students have responded really well, and it’s because of Jimmy and his personality.”

Large crowd at apple fair Last Sunday’s Wakefield Apple Fair was the biggest and best yet, topping last year’s crowd of 4000 people. Organising committee member Julian Eggers says the event ran pretty smoothly, despite a large number of people showing up at the Willow Bank venue around half an hour before the opening time of 11.30am. One of the focuses of the annual fair, held for the sixth time on Sunday, was the history of apple trees in New Zealand, with it being 200 years since missionary Samuel Marsden brought fruit trees into New Zealand. The Tasman area has had a connection with apples from the time of early European settlers, with trees being brought into the area onboard some of the early ships. People were encouraged to bring their own apples to press in vintage presses onsite, or they could buy apple juice in bladders made from fruit provided by Hoddys Orchard. Along with tasting of old-fashioned apple varieties, people could also buy apple trees and fruit. There were plenty of other stalls, while most of the food had some sort of apple flavour to it. Entertainment ran throughout the day, a highlight being the efforts of a group of apple pickers in the region from Vanuatu. A 40-strong singing group captured attention first, before a string band of about 14 had everyone smiling.

T-shirts sales to support tree planting Moved by the recent forest fires near Nelson, the Marlborough region’s Paper Rain Project has launched a not-for-profit T-shirt in support of native tree plantings in the destroyed areas. Although a substantial area of forestry was affected, the fire also had devastating effects on the lowland bush area of Eves Valley. All profits from the sale of the project Tshirts will go towards pre-purchasing native seedlings at an eco-sourced tree nursery. Donated funds will see trainee Department of Conservation rangers overseeing the restoration of damaged native areas in 2019-20. “Eves Valley Scenic Reserve has been badly affected by the Dovedale fire but somehow miraculously avoided becoming a total loss,” DOC biodiversity ranger Roger Gaskell says. “The Paper Rain Project’s generous offer will help heal damage to our precious taonga by providing fire-resistant native trees for Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology ranger trainees to plant as part of their reserve restoration project.” Project co-founder Indigo Greenlaw says they are no strangers to supporting causes. “As New Zealanders, and part of a community which has seen more than its share of wild fires, we are devastated by the loss of trees in Nelson. “But tees-for-trees gives people the opportunity to connect with a cause that will make a positive difference for the future. We all want to do our best to support our local communities and nature areas we love so much,” Greenlaw says.

Fundraiser for fire helpers Early learning centre Active Explorers Richmond is holding a special fund-raising event to support those who helped battle the Pigeon Valley fires. On April 27, from 9am to 1pm, the centre will open its doors to the public to host a giant garage sale and silent auction. A swag of highend treats will be up for grabs, such as vouchers for Vivo Hair, My Food Bag and Rack Boutique, not to mention an array of quality preloved items including clothing, toys and furniture. There will also be a coffee cart and sausage sizzle. “This is our way of acknowledging the hard work that was carried out during the fires by many community services such as the local fire volunteers, Helping You Help Animals (HUHA), SPCA and the Salvation Army,” says Active Explorers Richmond centre manager Karmin Marchbanks. All proceeds will go towards those agencies and charitable trusts Children from the centre – some of whose families were directly affected by the fires - have already showed their appreciation for these vital community services by making cards and cupcakes. “This event will inspire another round of conversations with the children about the different services that helped to put the fires out

and how people helped evacuees.” Centre children are now working hard to create colourful labels for all the items to be sold. Staff too have been working round the clock, particularly ECE teacher Karissa Roberts. “Karissa was involved in the larger community support for the people evacuated during the fires,” Karmin says. “They collected donated items to give to the evacuees but had such an overwhelming response that many items were left over after the event. Karissa felt they could be put to good use by holding a garage sale and combining this with a silent auction featuring items donated from local business. It is a nice way for the community to give back to the services that helped so tirelessly during this difficult time.” While Active Explorers Richmond has previously contributed to causes such as the Cancer Society and the Heart Foundation, this is the first time they have put on such a large fund-raising event. “It’s going to be a great event and we really hope lots of locals come along to support this worthy cause.” Any businesses wanting to donate items for the silent auction can contact Karmin on 544 7611 or by emailing cm.richmond@ activeexplorers.co.nz.

Emily List, centre, puts money in the donation box and receives a poppy from Heather Lines, right, and Marcia Langford in the Richmond Mall last Friday. Poppy sellers were out earlier this year than usual, due to Anzac Day falling so close to Easter. The annual poppy appeal is the RSA’s major fund-raising drive, with money raised held in trust. It is used to help improve the quality of life of current and former servicemen and women and their families who have been affected by their service. All the usual Anzac Day services and parades across the Waimea will go ahead this year. Some events elsewhere in the country, particularly in Auckland but also two in Christchurch and another in Queenstown, have been cancelled, with smaller services consolidating with others in their area as a result of safety concerns following the terror attacks in Christchurch.

He has fulfilled numerous conducting roles in the three years he has lived in Nelson, and his outstanding service to the community has been recognised with a 2019 Kiwibank Local Hero Medal. Nigel has an ingrained love of male voice choir singing, (and rugby), nurtured by his earlier life in Wales, and he is now imparting his considerable skill and passion in working with the Nelson Male Voice Choir. He will conduct the local men in a full concert for the first time, on Anzac Day, at the Nelson Cathedral, 2pm start.

Hi everyone, what a very busy time we have been having, but it’s always a lot of FUN! Great to see so many of our sporting sections ticking along, with numbers growing all the time. Keep up the good work! We have many things on the go at the moment, with more changes happening in the Gaming Room, some roofing repairs being undertaken on the Caravan Park amenities block, which will lead to a total repaint of this block inside and out, as well as the Squash facility. We are also in the middle of pricing up for a new ablutions’ setup at the end of the hall - great for the many groups that use this facility, but also for the many functions that we have coming up over the remainder of this year (geez, wish the year would slow down a bit). And as I write this article, we have Best & West up the scaffold installing new heat pumps in the snooker room. Yeah, won’t have to look at the frozen players again this winter. Easter and Anzac Day coming up, so look forward to seeing your smiling faces. Don’t forget, we are open every day! That’s all I have time for, so cheers everyone.

Whakatu Presbyterian Church All the local churches are praying God’s blessing of peace and love on everyone this Easter. May this Easter be a special time of peace, healing and calm in your lives and for those you love. May God woo you with love because love overcomes everything. I’ve been pondering the violent actions committed against God when He was executed on the cross that very first Good Friday. One of the things that stands out is God’s reaction. It was forgiveness and not retaliation or getting even, or even fighting to be understood.

When Jesus Christ – who is God – was executed on the cross He did not rant or rave, He did not shout out from any rooftop or social media platform with personal opinion. Instead, while on the cross He said the words “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” While dying on the cross Jesus Christ offered forgiveness. Very profound. Jesus Christ looked down from the cross to the executioners gambling for His clothing; to the criminal on the cross beside Him hurling insults at Him; to the religious leaders mocking Him; and to the crowd cursing Him, and Jesus forgave them all. A prayer of unmatched

compassion, mercy and love. Today Jesus Christ does the same. Forgiveness is offered by God to all people. That is one of the meanings of Easter. That we are loved and known and special to God; and this is for all people. How do we know this? Well, to prove his words were true, on the very first Easter Sunday, only three days after being executed, Jesus Christ rose alive from the tomb he was buried in. From being dead and decomposing he arose fully alive. In fact, he was seen by more than 500 people over the

next 40 days or so. Very strange but true. Easter Sunday is a celebration of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead. The traditional Easter egg is meant to be a symbol of Jesus Christ now risen from the dead. It proves God loves all humanity. It proves God’s forgiveness is not hollow but instead is available for all people. This Easter why not head down to a local church and join in an Easter service? Let it be a chance to experience God’s forgiveness and love, and for peace to enter your inner being.

Tax would discourage Tasman businesses: Bridges Businesses in Nelson and Tasman would be discouraged by a Capital Gains Tax, Leader of the Opposition Simon Bridges says. A Capital Gains Tax would hit almost 13,000 businesses in Nelson and Tasman, discouraging the region’s entrepreneurs and innovators, he says.

However, Minister of Finance Grant Robertson says a Capital Gains Tax is not government policy. Simon says the Tax Working Group’s proposed Capital Gains Tax would punish and deter Kiwis starting a business and those near retirement who want to sell up and

realise their nest egg. “We’re a nation of small businesses and some will become tomorrow’s major companies. A Capital Gains Tax puts road blocks in the way of our start-ups and would chase our best and brightest overseas. It is the last thing our economy needs.”

Grant says Labour has not proposed a Capital Gains Tax. He says it is a proposal from the independent Tax Working Group. “The government is carefully considering the group’s proposal and we will provide our response by the end of this month.”

Skills school shares the indoors Jonty Dine A pair of different sports codes are teaming up in a bid to upskill junior players. Nelson Cricket has permitted the Nelson Suburbs Football Skills School use of the indoor centre at Saxton Fields. Nelson Suburbs director of football Ryan Stewart says the collaboration is about providing young players an alternative surface when winter

inevitably takes its toll on the outdoor fields. “Around June and July, the fields tend to become a bit of a muck which can make things a lot harder for the little ones.” Ryan says the school is based around the fundamentals of football and having a dry surface to practice on will be great for learning these skills. “It’s a true, flat surface, and will certainly help improve our players.”

The skills school coaches about 100 young footballers ranging from 9-15 years old. He says a lot of young players miss out on the basics and by helping up-skill them their enjoyment of the game improves. Nelson Cricket’s Ryan Edwards says the organisation loves to see their centre used by other sporting codes. “We want it to be used by our community and football is a natural fit, we love the fact it’s in the junior area.”

New chapter for Nelson Hockey Jonty Dine

In a career which includes scoring against the All Blacks and coaching a Commonwealth Games gymnast, Professor Fabian Amor is embarking on his next chapter of sporting success. The Nelson Hockey Association operations manager has been at the forefront of a Nelson Hockey resurgence as he was instrumental in acquiring new

turf and a scoreboard at Saxton Fields. The Argentinian native has also led the creation of the new hockey Super League to help develop the region’s top players. The league will include Nelson with other Top of the South associations, Marlborough, West Coast and Buller. “It is important to provide those players regular top-quality competition.” Games will take place once a month for five weeks, with three matches to be held in Nelson and one each in Blenheim and Westport. Players will integrate with their regional rivals to form six new men’s and women’s teams; the Suns, the Falcons and Mr Chips. Fabian says they tried to combine the 90 players from various regions and positions in the teams. Fabian has a diverse but impressive sporting resume, his career kicking off on the footy field. He played first-five for Argentinian team, Mar del Plata, opposite Wayne Smith against a touring All Blacks side in 1985. “It was amazing to play against Wayne, Buck Shelford, Jock Hobbs, Robbie Deans, it was the best day of my life.” Though the All Blacks would win comfortably 52-6, Fabian was lucky enough to convert two penalties for a six-point haul against the best team in the world. He says he has kept in touch with the former All Blacks, attending a number

Fabian founded and directed the high-performance centre at Mar del Plata, helped coach Kiwi gymnast Jordan Rae at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi and was the liaison officer for Argentina during the inaugural All Blacks test in Nelson last year. His dedication and unwavering pas-

sion for sport has helped him transform the Nelson hockey scene. Fabian was again integral in the installation of two new scoreboards as well as a new turf at Saxton. “We have been working on that for a long time, so it is great for the community to see it happen, the facility is amazing.”

Good fields at Weekender Fine weather and tracks in good condition helped make last weekend’s Kaiteriteri Weekender mountainbike event a great success. Event spokesman Craig Skillicorn says around 300 riders in teams of two or three took part is Saturday’s six hour race, run at the Kaiteriteri Mountain Bike Park. The size of the field was about the same as last year, he says, with competitors enjoying the

relaxed atmosphere the event is known for. The race was won by the Nelson Bays Marquee Bandits team of Brent Steinmetz, Caleb Hill, Mel Hanson and Naomi Whitehead. Sunday’s Enduro race attracted a field of 110, which Craig says was up on last year. The event is raced on tracks that are not too advanced, he says, which encourages young riders and others who are new to that type of racing.

For those who want to attack the course and go as fast as they can, it is still a challenge. The Enduro was won by Josh Reilly, with Louise Kelly the first woman home. Following the Enduro was the Whip Off, a competition to find out who could perform the best whip-off from what Craig says was “a massive table-top jump”. The event, which is always popular with spectators, was won by Jack Bateup.

The Clubs New Zealand South Island championships are on in Christchurch over Easter weekend, from April 19-22. On Saturday, he lined up with 363 others and at the end he was ahead of them all, completing the 25km circuit in 1 hour 44 minutes and 57 seconds. Wellington’s Theo Wordsworth trailed just under four minutes behind, with Ethan Helliwell (Nelson) nudging out experienced Aucklander Janes Kuegler for third. The top three women were all locally based, albeit one from across the Tasman. Australia’s Little Athletics programme gives their youngsters a solid introduction to gaining “fast feet”. Julia Anderson certainly obtained hers, along with a solid multi-sport background. The quiet of the forest can give a feeling of being completely free, which is one of her loves, so the pristine, beech tree-laden pathway around “the Little Lake” was cer-

tainly to her taste. However, being completely free wasn’t part of the scenario. Wakefield’s Jodi Dobson was only 4 seconds shy of victory back in 2014. The course is an anticlockwise circuit of Lake Rotoiti, beginning from the Lake Rotoiti waterfront. It’s a distance of about 25km. Next year’s event marks the 25th anniversary of the race and it promises to be another sell-out judging by the contented smiling faces at the finish line.

Nelson Matters Euthanasia is a difficult subject that Nelsonians have strong opposing views on. I have been grappling with the issue over the last year as one of eight parliamentarians on the Justice Select Committee considering ACT MP David Seymour’s Bill. We reported last week to Parliament on the exhaustive hearing of 39,159 submissions, 92% opposed, from all over New Zealand including 440 from Nelson and Tasman. Euthanasia sounds like an attractive proposition. Advocates argue it is no different to what we do for pets to avoid suffering and that it is an individual’s choice to end their life by assisted suicide if they so wish. I

have become increasingly sceptical of these arguments as I have delved into the detail. Doctors made compelling submissions opposing this law change. They have no difficulty in patients making an informed decision to refuse treatment or using medication for pain relief that may bring forward the time of death. Their concern is about drugs administered with the deliberate purpose of killing a patient. They also expressed deep concern about the reliability of determining how long a person has to live and whether someone making a decision to end their life is free of de-

pression or undue influence from others. It is inevitable that mistakes will be made. I was unnerved by the international evidence. The most common reason cited by patient’s requesting euthanasia in counties where it is allowed is concern about being a burden on family and society. We must be cautious of creating an environment where people feel guilty for living. I was also shocked by examples overseas where a young person suffering from mental illness was lawfully granted euthanasia and where an older woman was forcefully injected against her will after having changed her mind.

Disability advocates were very opposed to the Bill. They have worked tirelessly for decades to get society to value people with disabilities. The Bill applies to people with grievous and irremediable conditions as well as the terminally ill. It effectively states that assisted suicide is okay for these people as their lives are of less value. I also worry about the mixed signals this bill sends on suicide with over 600 New Zealanders taking their own life each year. This law change erodes the value put on life in saying it is OK for some to end their life prematurely. I also struggle with the Act Party’s

pure individualism in this bill that ignores the importance of family. It entitles someone to take their own life without their partner, children or loved ones even knowing about it until after the event. This Bill is motivated by genuine compassion but it is mistaken. We should heed the wisdom from Hospice and their focus on the quality of life in one’s last days. We should be especially proud in Nelson of the new Hospice facilities in Stoke. Parliament would do better to focus on better funding and more consistent access to palliative care than opening up this Pandora’s Box of allowing assisted suicide. Advt.
