matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz Shares are now for sale in Waimea Irrigators Limited. The latest offer to buy water shares opened on June 21 and is available publicly for irrigators on the Waimea plains. Waimea Irrigators Limited was formed in 2016 to complete the Waimea Community Dam project, alongside the Tasman District Council. The objective of Waimea Irrigators Limited, alongside the TDC, is to invest in the project through Waimea Water. The group is offering 2,375 shares for sale, with a price set at $6,325 per share. Shares were previously sold in 2018. Murray King, chair of Waimea Irrigators Limited, says that the drought in Tasman gives good reasons for irrigators on the Waimea plains to invest in the future of their business, by investing in a secure water supply. “Everyone across the region felt the effect of the severe drought we faced last summer.”

Share offers open for dam FROM PAGE 1 Total rainfall in Appleby during January/February this year was 6.5mm, compared to the average 161.3mm for January/February. “There’s no more compelling argument to invest in water shares than the increasing extreme weather patterns we’re experiencing – the drier dries and wetter wets.” Murray says that buying shares in Waimea Irrigators Limited is the best way to ensure a dependable supply of water to continue farming and growing on the Waimea plains. “The community dam means we can capture rainfall when there’s plen-

ty of it and release it when it’s dry. It provides a secure water supply for irrigation, a secure water supply for current and future urban residents and improves flows in the Waimea River.” The initial 2000 shares are being offered by Century Water Limited, formed to raise funds from investors to invest in Waimea Irrigators Limited by converting it’s 2000 convertible notes in Waimea Irrigators into Water Shares, and sell them to repay investors who provided funding for the dam. Century Water Limited was formed near the end of 2018 by a group of local, inter-generational family businesses on the Waimea

plains as an investor vehicle and put $11 million into Waimea Irrigators Limited to help bridge the funding gap in the dam. “It was a significant commitment by family businesses that have been around for generations and wanted to see the dam through to fruition for the benefit of their businesses and the economic prosperity of our region.” One of those particular shareholders is Heidi Seifried-Houghton, of Seifried Estate, who holds shares in Century Water Limited. Heidi says the Seifried family wants to play its part in protecting the future of horticulture on the Waimea plains.

“We see water as everything,” Heidi says. “Weather patterns are increasingly extreme and are only going to become more so,” Heidi says. “Our investment in the dam is about securing water for the future.” Over the past four decades, the Seifried’s have expanded and invested in grape-growing land across the Tasman region, and Heidi says now they need to ensure the viability of these blocks into the future through a reliable, secure water supply, such as the community dam. Water Shares in Waimea Irrigators Limited are being offered pursuant to a Product Disclosure Statement dated 14 June, 2019.

Calendars to save our birds Matt McCrorie Native birds are in serious trouble, but one Richmond group is battling to protect them. Native Bird Recovery Richmond is a small group of dedicated volunteers who have trapped predators in the four-bush gullies behind Richmond for over 15 years. They also work to control noxious weeds and have a planting programme. A report released in 2017 from the Commissioner for the the

Environment found that out of the 168 species of native birds in New Zealand, only 33 aren’t under threat. The group of volunteers works to trap predators and maintain a planting programme in order to conserve bird life in the Richmond area. Chairman Neil Page says the work is important, and while they get some support from the council, they need to fundraise to sustain their organisation. Their main fundraising drive is a calendar featuring the native birds they are work-

ing to save. “It’s our major fundraiser, and it was a proven success last year.” The calendars are being sold for $10 each, and the money raised goes towards the conservation efforts of Native Bird Recovery Richmond. Last year the fundraiser was a success, selling over 900 copies. “The purpose is to get the message out that our birds need saving.” The calendars are available at several places, including the Richmond Mall, Copy Press Stoke and Resene Colour.

Nelmac ups wages to secure talent Charles Anderson Jane Sheard believes in paying a fair wage for a fair day’s work. The English native recently arrived in Nelson to start in the top job at the Nelson City Councilowned environmental management company, Nelmac. With her she brings years of upper management experience from industries as diverse as extreme sports and oil and gas. Jane says the company’s future is in its conservation arm, Kumanu. “That is the growth for us in becoming an environmental specialist.” But she says there is no use having a vision if you can’t attract people to the roles. Right now, they have 50 new jobs in a company that employs 250 people and turns over about $35 million a year. “I always want to make sure it’s fair. I wouldn’t be proud of leading a team below minimum wage.” Jane says the affordability of the region is a concern. “To be frank, I’m here renting a house, but the rents are horrendous. I don’t see how anyone who is underpaid can afford to live here. We have a massive problem with recruitment and attraction to the area.”

New Nelmac chief executive Jane Sheard says she is committed to being fair. Photo: Supplied. To that end she is trying to work with other large employers in the region to share job lists so that if someone is thinking about moving here, they can suggest another potential role for their partner or spouse. “All the businesses are fighting

for the same people. If we get together and make sure people can afford to live here, it’s a win win.” The company has proactively increased its minimum hourly rate in advance of the Governmentenforced movement to a minimum wage of $18.90 set for 2020.

Almost 80 percent of Nelmac staff are already being paid more than the 2019 living wage. Jane comes to Nelson after two and a half years working in an executive role in Australia. She was planning on moving back to the UK but then she met a Kiwi and

moved to Te Anau. Then the job at Nelmac came up. After raising her family, she went back to night school to study management while she worked. But now Jane has her eyes on the company’s conservation future. “We want to be guardians.”

Region raises huge funds for rescue chopper Staff Reporter Top of the South citizens have raised nearly $25,000 to help support the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust through this year’s Westpac Chopper Appeal. Together, New Zealanders raised more than $1.26million, beating last year’s appeal by $400,000. The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter will receive a total of $24,625. That’s because all funds raised through the appeal are distributed to the 15 rescue helicopter services across the country, with each individual donation going back to the region it was collected from. “We are so grateful to the community and the local staff of Westpac for supporting the annual chopper appeal so passionately with our fundraising activities,” says Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust General Manager Paula Muddle. “The funds they have raised will be invaluable in helping us continue to provide this vital service free of charge, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year”. This year was memorable for New Zealanders going the extra mile (and a few more) in their

Highlights included: Auckland café owner and Afghan refugee Karim Rostami completing the 20km Westpac Chopper Swim from Waiheke Island to Auckland, despite childhood polio leaving him unable to use his legs in the water. 235km one-day charity bike ride through Southland. This was just two months after suffering a heart attack and being flown to hospital by the rescue chopper. Westpac NZ acting General Manager of Consumer Banking and Wealth, Gina Dellabarca, paid tribute to the hard work and dedication of Westpac staff, volunteers and New Zealanders who have generously contributed to such a strong result. “So many people have pushed

themselves right to the limits to fundraise this year”. “And their determination is incredibly inspiring,” she says. “The theme of our campaign this year was that Chopper Country is often closer than people think, and that message has rung true for a lot of people”, she says. “Whether you’re at your local beach, or on a bike trail at the end of the road, the rescue choppers are always there to help in emergencies, so it’s great that we’re

able to help them.” Donations are welcome throughout the year and can be made at www.chopperappeal.co.nz or any Westpac branch. According to the information from their website, a total of 7,376 people were rescued by the Rescue Helicopter last year in the whole coutry. In there you may also check other stories about some amazing Chopper rescues and share your own.

Locals express frustration over a further Bateup Road delay Matt McCrorie Reporter

matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz

The $3.6 million project was started in April last year, and promised to be be finished by December. Then it was March, and then mid-June. Now, residents and local businesses see no end in sight for the completion of the Bateup Road upgrade. “It was really hard for us, it didn’t help our Christmas trade. When you’re busy over Christmas it’s just one more thing you have to contend with,” says Saralinda Macmillan, of Macmillan’s Handthrown Ceramics and Alchemy Café. “We really missed out on our seasonal trade.” Now, locals like Saralinda and other residents are frustrated over the further delays. The project was delayed several times, and while reasons for earlier delays were cited as a machinery ban during the drought, and equipment being used to help fight the Pigeon Valley fire, the further delay is causing headaches for locals. It has been revealed that a section of the road will have to be dug up, as the material used by Higgins,

Saralinda Macmillan, of Macmillan’s Handthrown Ceramics and Alchemy Café on Bateup Road. the contractor responsible for the project, was not appropriate for winter conditions. There is now

too much moisture in the base of the road for sealing to be viable. Several sections of the road will

have to be dug up, and work will need to begin again before sealing can take place.

The council also acknowledged that there are several areas on the road that are not up to standard.

Age Concern hui on social connection for older people Keeping older people socially connected is one of the most important things we can do as a community, and Age Concern Nelson Tasman is holding a hui next week which will help build on their existing work. It’s two years since the charity set up its AgeConnect initiative, aimed at tackling social isolation and loneliness among older people. Since then it has set up several successful projects that offer friendship and community connections. The hui will offer those attending the chance to input and make suggestions about what else could be done ,and who could do it. Age Concern Nelson Tasman Manager Caroline Budge says it’s important that people are updated about what they’ve been doing.

Local businesses compete in Retail Awards Two local businesses have been announced as finalists in the Retail NZ Awards 2019. Pic’s Peanut Butter in Stoke and Eyebright Country Store in Richmond will both be competing against four other finalists and each other to claim the Customer Experience Award. They are competing against three businesses from Auckland; Crystal Laundromat, Forme Spa and Wellbeing and Glengarry Wines, and one other from Christchurch; The Christmas Hut. The winners will be announced at the Awards Gala Dinner on July 23 at the SkyCity Convention Centre. Pic’s global marketing manager Nikki Neate says the whole team is “over the moon” about being announced as a finalist. “Nelson and Tasman have always been so supportive of us so it’s really nice when we go outside of that Nelson bubble and still being recognised for doing really cool things.” Nikki says she entered the business in the awards, alongside around 100 other companies from around the country. “Since then we’ve had a mystery shopper come through and then I got a call to say we were a finalist.” She says the combination of opening the shop, having the cafe, and running tours has meant that more people can come in and meet the team and see what they are all about. “We opened at the end of February and it’s kind of like we had all this buzz and we thought ‘oh, it’ll die down soon’ but it just hasn’t, it’s really cool.” Nikki will attend the awards gala with head tour operator Barney Hodges, meeting Pic at the awards dinner after he speaks at the NZ Retail Summit.

“We have worked really hard these past few years to keep older people connected to their communities, and helped them overcome the barriers that can get in their way,” says Caroline Buge. Our visiting service has been running for over 15 years and with AgeConnect we’ve been able to add more options for people looking for more contact. We want to share that with the wider community and hopefully inspire some more ideas.” The hui is on Wednesday, 24th July, from 9.30am to

12pm, with morning tea provided. It’s in the Elim Church, Main Road Stoke. Please note places are limited and registration is required. To do so, contact Breffni on 03 544 7624 Ext 5, or email: ageconnect@ageconcernnt. org.nz.

Memoir provides discovery Matt McCrorie Reporter

matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz

A local man has been on a voyage of discovery in recent years, while researching the 108-year-old memoirs of his great grandfather. Alastair Rose has spent recent years tracing the life and adventures of his great grandfather, Henry Rose. Henry Rose saw a lot in his life as third mate on ship sailing around the world in the 19th century, carrying troops to the Crimean War, convicts to Australia and settlers to New Zealand. Henry’s memoirs, which are now being published by Alastair, paint a picture of the hard life he had to face at sea. As third mate, Henry witnessed four convicts being sentenced to 24 lashes, only for stealing rum from the storeroom aboard the ship they were in. ‘I had never seen a man flogged…’ he wrote. ‘I shall never forget it.’ First due to step out on deck was a large, former river worker from Thames who refused to move. ‘Captain Anderson… walked up to the man… placing his revolver close to the man’s head… You

The third time as

Captain Anderson said, “Will you go?” the man stepped out. Captain Anderson told us afterwards that he never felt so glad… in another moment he would have shot him dead.’ Henry’s memoir has been fleshed

out with illustrations and much extra research by Nelson writer and historian Karen Stade to produce a book called ‘Driven by the Wind’. Another local resident, writer Paul Bensemann, has helped in

the editing. Henry Rose’s memoir, edited by Alastair, is being published by Picton-based Carol Dawber through her River Press publishing firm, which specialises in New Zealand history.

Community conversation on sea level rise to begin With increased droughts and storms in recent years, the Tasman region continues to feel the effects of climate change. A new project has been undertaken by the Tasman District Council in order to better prepare communities for the effects of ongoing changes to weather patterns and rising sea levels, The new project will work towards enabling the community to better plan for long-term sea-level rise and coastal hazards. While the extent of sea level rise is unknown, any rising sea levels will have effects for development in coastal areas, as well as envi-

ronmental, cultural and societal effects. To start the conversation, the council has begun to map lowlying coastal land that may be affected by sea level rise. The maps show scenarios such as the effect of high tides caused by storms, historical coastal erosion, accretion (sediment gain) and coastal structures such as stop banks and walls. These maps will be available on the council website from the 22nd July when the public will be asked for their feedback, observations and concerns, and will continue until the 13th September.

Wine and Food still a fundraising success Matt McCrorie

While for some it might have left a sour taste after the annual wine and food festival had to be cancelled earlier this year, organisers say that it was still something of a success. The Annual Wine and Food Festival, organised as a fundraising event by Rotary Richmond and held at Middle Earth Vineyards in Brightwater, was scheduled for Sunday 17 February but cancelled due to high fire risk during the drought and Pigeon Valley forest fires. The decision came after discussions with Civil Defence and the Tasman District Council. The organising committee has said that the risk of fire and the fatigue of volunteers already helping battle the forest fire meant that the best option was to cancel the event. The event was the Rotary’s main fundraiser, and even though circumstances meant it had to be cancelled, it was still something of a fundraising success. Hospice Nelson Tasman was the principal charity, and presale tickets meant that money was still able to be raised for the charity. “Many people told us to keep

their money from presale tickets, as they knew it was going back into the community and going towards a good cause,” said Cynthia Martin, a spokesperson for the club. “We are trying to thank the public, a lot people worked quite hard – an awful lot of work went into the festival.” While the festival was shaping up to be one of the best yet, with top food and entertainment, safety to the public was paramount. “We still managed to raise some good money for the hospice, Its still nice to come up with something.” However, planning is now well underway for the 2020 Food and Wine Festival. The festival originally started at the A&P showgrounds in Richmond, and although it moved to Middle Earth Vineyards, 2020 marks a return to the original venue. “Since the fires we have had to look for another venue – we are returning to the showgrounds because of the central location, there is also plenty of parking, not only for cars but for motor homes too,” Cynthia said. “We were disappointed that we had to cancel this year, but a lot of people are looking forward to next year’s festival even more

Paul Trolove first discovered his passion for woodworking when he was only four years old. It’s been something of a long time since then, but it’s safe to say his skill has only improved. While his workshop has been set up for years, Paul says that since he retired from life

as a doctor, he has had a lot more time on his hands. “I guess I’ve found that I just have more time to work on things and perfect things.” His most impressive display; a miniature Rolls Royce that took him nearly 18 months of on and off work to complete. “People are really interested in it” Paul said when proudly displaying his work, usually

kept prominently displayed in the living room of his Richmond home. Paul says that the Tasman region has a huge range of talent when it comes to woodworking. “It’s really quite a big thing here, there are a lot of us and the level of skill you see is so high across the region.” While Paul might be shy about his craftsmanship,

his friends certainly aren’t. Lindsay Yeo, a friend of Paul’s, had nothing but honest praise for his friend’s craftsmanship. “We have a region full of extraordinary woodworkers, but this is really something else. Paul’s precision and detail are just incredible.” Back in his workshop already, Paul is well underway on his next project.

Soil stabilisation effort in Pigeon Valley Staff Reporter A programme aimed at stabilising soil and preventing erosion has begun in the Pigeon Valley fire zone. A soil stabilising polymer has been applied to the slopes in the fire area to stop erosion. The intensity of the fire has meant that the soil affected has become hydrophobic. It repels water instead of absorbing it during rainfall. While hydrophobic soil will fix itself over time, it means in the short term the affected catchments will receive water faster than usual and the slopes are prone to eroding at a much faster rate. The sediment will enter the streams and settle in their beds, damaging the aquatic environment, with a risk of sediment reaching the sea during a storm. To combat this, the Nelson Tasman Civil Defence recovery group has engaged RST Environmental Solutions to coordinate and apply the polymer. An initial application of a

The polymer application, called Envirobinder, is used in New Zealand mainly on earthworks sites as a soil stabiliser. It’s made up of 5% polymer and 95% water. Robert Coul-

Nelson Matters

This week I called on our District Health Board to unequivocally apologise to Nelson woman Sarah Preece. It seems, as Elton John said in his famous song “Sorry seems to be the hardest word”. Sarah was brutally assaulted and raped in her Brook Street home in late 2017. The assailant, Jacob Jensen from the West Coast, had presented at Nelson Hospital at 3.30pm in a clearly psychotic state. He said people wanted to kill him. He was assessed as a high risk of self-harm or harming others. After being unattended for three hours he left. Soon after he made his way up the Brook

where he committed his appalling assault on Sarah in her home. Mr Jensen was subsequently found not guilty by way of insanity and committed to psychiatric hospital care in Christchurch. There are three aspects of this horrible constituency case that I have been working on with Sarah Preece. The first is for our health bosses to acknowledge that our hospital service failed that day. We encourage people with mental health illness to seek help. Mr Jensen should not have been left unattended for three hours at the Emergency Department and been able to walk out. While they have expressed sympathy to Sa-

rah, they refuse to accept the service was inadequate. My second concern is our privacy laws. My requests on behalf of Sarah for information in this case from the DHB which date back to November 2017 were declined on privacy grounds. It is wrong that this rapist could access very personal details of Sarah as part of his court case, but she was denied any of his. I am pursuing changes to our privacy laws to fix this. My third concern is over the rights of victims of serious crimes where an offender is found to be insane. Sarah’s experience repeats that of Wendy Hamer who was also viciously assaulted by a

son, director of RST Environmental Solutions, said the process includes sowing the areas with the grass seed mix, which will put cover on the slopes and stop impact damage from the rainfall, as well as put root mass into the soil to hold it all together.

“The fire was so hot that much of the root mass disintegrated, leaving the soil in a fragile state.” That was followed by phase two, which is the application of soil stabilising polymer, which will bind the soil together and stop it from moving.

544 Waimea Road, Nelson

psychotic man. Victims of such crimes are denied a say over future release or conditions. “Wendy’s Petition”, with Sarah’s support, has secured the signatures of thousands of Nelsonians. I am determined these Nelson cases trigger a change in the law. National introduced a Bill into Parliament to have this anomaly fixed. I pay tribute to both Sarah and Wendy and their partners and family supporting them. It is incredibly brave of them to come forward and tell their horrific stories. They are doing so in the hope that we can learn from what went wrong. Our duty is to heed

their message and put things right. I am proud of Nelson Hospital and its dedicated board, managers, doctors and nurses. I get hundreds of reports from Nelsonians of superb lifesaving care. Mr Jensen, not the DHB, is responsible for this horrific assault. I commend the DHB on strengthening mental health services at our Emergency Department. However, Sarah Preece will live with the physical and emotional scars of her assault for the rest of her life. It was preventable. An apology from hospital bosses is overdue. Advt.

As the owner of Baby Space, in her daily role as Head Teacher, Lynda Richards draws from over 37 years’ experience in Early Childhood Education, which has included leadership roles. After working in ECE for many years, Lynda felt children under three needed an environment and teachers that specialised in meeting their diverse needs, so that inspired her to open Babyspace in 2008. “We offer learning and care at the children’s pace, maintain-

ing their natural routines. Babyspace is a warm, homely environment that supports the diverse needs, abilities and interests of young children; they love exploring our natural outdoor space with its fruit and vegetable gardens. We have a great team; all of our teachers are passionate, friendly, experienced and qualified.” Lynda says her teaching philosophy is inspired by RIE and the Te Whariki NZ curriculum.

“My expertise is in the care and education of young children and in providing safe, respectful, high-standard care. I like to maintain a low childteacher ratio and small group sizes, and enjoy taking care of the day-to-day management.” Lynda says many local families have bought second and third children to Babyspace. “It’s respected throughout the ECE community; people appreciate our stable teaching team and the positive, nurturing environment we provide.”

√ Looking after your health and well-being √ Engaging with community groups across Nelson-Tasman

”It’s been fantastic to work alongside inspiring community members for the last few years. Thanks... for all the hard work, enthusiasm, and dedication that makes this region a better place for us and the generations to come.”

Cr Dana Wensley is a fierce advocate for the region and works hard to bring the community voice to council. “Everything we do at council affects the people who live here, whether it be water quality, road safety, urban design or environmental management” says Dana. “Every decision I make, I talk to the community to bring their voice to the council table.”

Dana has a background in health law, and in addition to council work she serves on the National Ethics Advisory Committee (a ministerial appointment) and as a director on the Copyright Licensing Board. “To progress Tasman we need to keep current, innovative, connected, and draw on the fantastic resources this region has to offer. The flow of information and ideas needs to go both ways- from the ‘top

down’ and the ‘community up’.” What is she most proud of from her time on council? “As Deputy Chair of Community Development I successfully asked my fellow councillors to make changes so the youth voice was not lost in decision-making, and as Chair of Accessibility for All Forum, I worked with individuals and organisations to ensure the new Age-Friendly Policy was adopted.”

Richmond 14th grade end of a high in Christchurch The Helen Ruston Mike Pero Richmond AFC 14th grade Red Devils team travelled to Canterbury last week and competed in the Christchurch International Cup for the first time, which is held at the state-of-the-art football facility in Yaldhurst. The team finished 10th out of 12 teams. They managed to beat Coastal

Spirit from Christchurch 3-2 thanks to Ethan King scoring a hattrick and FC Nelson 1-0 in their last game with a goal from Harvey Adams. Tyler Darracourt was the team’s player of the tournament. The team are already talking about entering again next year. Back locally and the away games saw the Fresh Choice Richmond

first team beaten 5-3 by FC Nelson. There were many positives taken from the game however, with the highlight being a hattrick scored by Adam Stack. The Fresh Choice Richmond second team had a great 3-2 win over Tahuna, and the Thompson Daly Chartered Accountants Thistle third team visited Golden

Bay and lost 3-1 to the home side. The in-form Hothouse Foxes first division women’s side had a comfortable 3-0 win over FC Nelson. At Jubilee Park, the Hornbills second team was too good for the Suburbs Seals, beating them 2-1, however the Global Wings Travel Hornbills third team lost 4-2 to their Suburbs opponents, the Rovers.

The Mapua fourth team also beat the Sprig and Fern Richmond Stags 4-2. The Tasman Auto Electrics Bogans picked up three points when their FC Nelson opponents defaulted. The About Beauty at Monaco Swans couldn’t muster enough players on the day and had to default themselves.

Conditions were excellent for the 2nd Waimea Harrier Sprig and Fern 10km Road Race of the season, hosted this time by the Brightwater S&F. The course, incorporating part of the Great Taste Trail up Higgins Road and the Mt Heslington Road, is becoming increasingly popular each year, with 75 runners and walkers enjoying the event on Saturday. While he held the lead from the start, Chris Sharland said after the race he had no idea how close his nearest rival was, when Brian Kemp, running strongly, finished in 37.50mins, just 10 seconds behind him. Kathryn Bunchenburg was the first women home in a commendable time of 42.03mins, with 2nd placed Colette Read, using the race as part of her 30km training run for the day, in preparation for the Townsville Marathon. Daryl Nish challenged himself to walk a fast time on this course and succeeded by coming home in 63.25mins, one minute ahead of the rest of the walkers. Elaine Llewellin was a clear winner in the women’s walk, completing her 10kms in 75mins.

Local choir shines! Acapella singing group, Nelson Bays Harmony Chorus (NBHC), recently returned from representing Nelson and Tasman at the Sweet Adelines national competition in Dunedin. The group spent many months in preparation, practicing in Club Waimea and in each other’s homes. Choruses from all over New Zealand performed in front of a large audience including four international judges, who travel to New Zealand each year, usually from the USA. Each judge is a specialist in one of four areas: Sound, Music, Expression and Showmanship. This year NBHC were thrilled to receive the ‘Audience Choice award’. This reflected the many hours

Winn wins another one It is two on the trot for the southern driver who won the enduro at Christchurch’s Mainland Challenge a fortnight ago and now leads the southern regional championship by one point from Taranaki class three driver Brendon Old, 108-107. Driving his Scorpion Chev V8 race car, Winn survived a firstlap crash and subsequent slow roll-over that was part of a multicar incident which forced organisers to red flag the race and restart for a revised distance of 220 km. The crashes happened two kilometres from the start at a skid clearing, where the leading cars ran through the road closure tape and either went off the road or, in Winn’s case, up a steep bank. Most of those affected were able to regain the road and return to the pits in time to re-start. Rejoining from down the order, Winn carved his way through the field, ran down the leaders and was named winner on corrected time in a faultless drive. “It was a very good run, and I

Nelson’s Greg Winn has won the 2019 Youngs Automotive Ruff ’n’Tuff 240, a one-day endurance race in the production pine forests south-west of Nelson. was very happy with the drivers out there, they all got out of the way without holding us up, which made the big push safer,” he said. Winn’s fellow Nelsonian, Nevil Basalaj, actually crossed the line first in his Jimco Chev V6, but

was second once the time classification had been added to elapsed race time. Veteran racer Ash Kelly, making his comeback in a Cougar VW single-seater with a 2.8-litre flat four engine, was third overall.

The top three positions all went to unlimited-class race cars. Fellow Nelson driver Dan Fisher had led the race but went out when a CV joint on his car failed. Flat tyres caused many racers problems. The faster sections of

the course were linked by narrow ridge tracks leading into valleys and studded with pine tree stumps that could catch a front or rear wheel and pop a tyre or even tear off the wheel. Although it took until Monday, local driver Cam Stratford now has a fair idea of what ended his race from the weekend. “We checked all through the drivetrain and it’s apparent at this stage the input shaft into the gearbox has let go”. The gearbox is a fairly strong Ford toploader so Cam is hoping that it’s only minimal damage. “We also have appeared to lose oil pressure in the engine, but we don’t think that’s as serious as it sounds, maybe a popped hose or something”. “The engine wasn’t making funny noises or smelling hot so hopefully it’s just a coincidence that it’s stopped”. First non-unlimited class racer to finish was Scott Munro who had started 19th and charged all the way to fourth in his standardclass UTV.

Waimea junior netballers impress at SI tournament Jacob Page The Waimea College Year 9 and 10 netball teams each had their moments at the South Island Junior tournament at Christchurch’s Hagley Park last week. The Year 10 team finished fourth while the Year 9 team bounced back from a tough first day to win five consecutive games to finish 17th. The Year 10 team flourished after downing Christchurch’s

St Andrew’s College to post big victories over Ashburton College and Timaru Girls’ High School to top their group. They then beat Christchurch’s Villa Maria College 34-26 in their top 16 match before dismantling James Hargest 40-17. They triumphed over Southland Girls’ High School in the quarter-final 32-32 before succumbing to Christchurch Girls’ 42-27 in the final four. They lost to St Margaret’s in the third and fourth playoff, 44-19.

The Year 9 team started promisingly with a 40-1 win over Lincoln High School but losses to Taieri School and Cashmere High School saw their top 16 chances disappear. They returned for day two motivated, and racked up consecutive wins over Waitaki Girls’, Central Southland High School, Burnside High School, Nayland College and Marlborough Girls’ College to end their campaign on a high and with plenty of momentum.

Wanderers Sports Club Report Wanderers’ teams have mixed results Taylors Wanderers Rugby club had two teams in semi-finals on Saturday. The division one team played local rivals Waimea Old Boys at Jubilee Park and the women’s team travelled to Lansdowne Park in Blenheim to do battle with defending champions Moutere. The match at Jubilee Park was an entertaining encounter, marked with intensity with both teams totally dedicated to the cause, attempting to ensure that the season did not end in Richmond. WOB opened the scoring with a penalty and two early tries for a 12-3 lead after 10 minutes, before Wanderers enjoyed a period of dominance and two tries of their own, improving the score to 1213 in favour of the visitors. Another penalty to WOB saw the halftime break arrive with WOB leading 15-13. The pace of the game, and the enormity of some contacts, had forced a couple of players from the field and just before halftime Taylors Wanderers lost their talismanic captain Fletcher Matthews following a heavy tackle. This loss disrupted the Wanderers backline a little, but the physical forward exchanges continued between both packs and although completely hard and fair, the toll on both teams was brutal. After six minutes of the second period, Chris Hala’ufia crossed and with Justin Barr’s conversion Wanderers were in the lead 1520. However, another huge clash resulted in Nino Peniamina being forced from the field causing further changes to the Wanderers backline, and in the final 15 min-

utes Waimea were able to exploit some hesitation and gain the victory 29-20. In the final analysis, Waimea did deserve the victory, with some impressive scrambling defence that denied Wanderers’ prop Zyon Hola when he seemed certain to score, and some vital turnovers won simply through hard work at the breakdown. Coach Glenn Grant rued the injury toll and penalties conceded at the wrong end of the field, but was impressed by the massive battle and heart shown by his young team, which he hopes to retain for next year as they all continue to develop and grow, especially Nino Peniamina who solidified the midfield on defence and in attack, Sione Havili-Talitui and Chris Hala’ufia who combine excellently in the back row, and Naki Saumaki with his hard, aggressive running. All impressed on Saturday, as did Maloni Soane before his injuryforced departure. The loss meant the season came to an end with this match. Those selected for the Mako or Griffins will play further games but for the rest the rugby boots can be packed away until next year. Travelling to Lansdowne Park in Blenheim, amidst a medley of games, it was always going to be a tough day at the office for the Taylors Wanderers women’s semi-final against last year’s champions Moutere. The team came out firing to score within 10 minutes of the starting whistle, with Moutere hitting back soon after. Both teams scored again shortly but Wander-

Div2 sees Wanderers vs WOB with Jaden Roeske charging with Alan Davis to his left. ers regained the lead with ShakiaLee Biggs slotting the only conversion of the four tries, leaving them on a 12-10 lead, only to be knocked back by another quick try by Moutere. Similar to the Jubilee Park game, the intensity was impressive and with a 17-12 lead to Moutere the game came to an abrupt halt with a one of many smashing tackles resulting in a concussion and the game being transferred to another field. The remainder of the half was fought out with Wanderers holding out Moutere through a battle of defence, to hold the score to 17-12. The second half saw Moutere dominate by capitalising on op-

portunities that rarely opened up from the hard-fighting Wanderers side and coach Ian Biggs said picking out individual player performances was hard as everyone on the team performed beyond requirements and each and every player deserved to take the field in this semi-final. Individual tries went to Tessa Silcock, who scored twice, Gina Healey and Amelia Hammett and the team players of the day points were awarded to Tamara Silcock (3), Staci Kohe (2) and Alisi Seigarfo with 1 point. The final score of 42-22 was another fine semi-final contest, and next week the final between Moutere and Waimea will be a great game. The early game at Jubilee Park

was between Waimea and Wanderers division two and this also was a fantastic match played in great spirit and high intensity, with each team enjoying periods of dominance but Taylors Wanderers were better at scoring points when on top, taking a 19-5 halftime lead and turning it into a final score of 36-12. As in recent games, Wanderers produced a sound forward platform, assisted by good hard running in the backs which resulted in some excellent tries, securing Wanderers in second place on the table before next week’s final round game against the unbeaten Stoke side. Again, Bobby Palmer varied the attack well and on the left wing Josh Kelly was always threatening and scored an excellent solo try in the first half, as well as making huge ground on many occasions. Additional tries were scored by Palmer, Ethan Johnston, Sean King, Sean Whittaker and Ducati Morrell-Hopa, and Palmer added three conversions. Player of the day awards went to Zane Lyttle (3), Jaden Roeske (2) and Theo Moore (1) and all three carried the battle to WOB all game, constantly challenging the advantage line and the Waimea defence. The Volunteer prize of the week this week is Jo Blanchet, who wins a voucher from Southfuels Spring Grove, and the Sponsor award was won by Darrin Barr at Total. Next week only the Taylors Wanderers division two team play, away to Stoke to decide the final positions before semi-finals the following week.

Ryan Coxon never expected his move to Wanderers to pay off so quickly. The 21-year-old packed up his life in Tokoroa to sign a three year development deal with the Mako’s and no more than a matter of weeks later he had made his debut in Super Rugby for The Chiefs. “It was a tough call to come here, especially because I’d never been here before and to leave family and friends, as well as my partner, and do long distance, it’s definitely had its challenges”. “Coming into my first professional environment was something that I’ll never regret.” He said to play Super Rugby this year was something very special. “To make my debut was absolutely great, especially since I was such a huge Chiefs fan”. “Since I was a little boy, going to their games all the time and watching guys like Liam Messam, Richard Kahui and Stephen Donald”. “And now I am rubbing heads with current players like Sam Cane and Brodie Retallick, and that was great,” said the former New Zealand under-20s scrummager. “I was in as an injury replacement for them during the preseason, then I got a contract with them for only a week and I have been told that I was in the team the Tuesday before my debut”. “This was was pretty unexpected for me.” He said he’s slotted in playing

Why are we doing it? It is important that we upgrade this intersection to cope with increasing amounts of traffic, so that motorists can navigate the intersection safely. Disruption to traffic will be minimal. There will be short periods (3-4 days) when traffic will be reduced to single lane flow during installation of the hole (early August) and road marking/sealing (mid-November).

Temporary chlorination – Richmond water supply Over the next month we will be connecting a new water main on Headingly Lane into the live water supply network for Richmond. At times during this work we will chlorinate the Richmond water supply as a precaution to make sure it remains safe to drink while the pipe is connected. Chlorination dates • 22 - 25 July – please note, this is a change to the dates advertised previously. The work is weather dependent, so keep an eye on the Tasman District Council Facebook page and website for any updates. You can reduce the taste and smell of chlorine simply by: • Using a filter jug • Chilling the water in the fridge first before drinking Advice for owners of pet fish If you have fish, we advise de-chlorinating the water before topping up tanks. You can get a neutralising agent from pet stores.

Vegetation control – roadside spraying in rural areas Registration of Non-Spray Areas

The Working Group will have between 8 and 16 members, including iwi members. We seek to engage a diverse team from around the district. We are seeking people who: • Are well respected and connected in the broader community; • Have connections with one or more major sectors relevant to biodiversity and biosecurity; • Hold deep knowledge and understanding of matters relevant to forming the Strategy; • Can work collaboratively towards consensus decisions; and • Can contribute at least 150 hours to this work over the next 18 months. The work will include half-day and full-day meetings, work between meetings, and meetings with sectors and communities. Tasman District Council will provide meeting spaces and catering and may pay contribution towards travel costs of members to support attendance but will not pay meeting fees to Working Group members. More information and the working group terms of reference can be found on our website at tasman.govt.nz/ link/bio-strategy.

Contractors employed by the New Zealand Transport Agency undertake an ongoing vegetation control programme to ensure that roadside vegetation does not affect the safety or operation of the region’s state highway network. This programme includes the spraying of chemical herbicides including the following active ingredients: glyphosate, metsulfuron, terbuthylazine and triclopyr. Anyone wishing to register their property as a ‘no-spray’ zone, which requires a commitment to maintain a property’s highways frontage to specifications provided by NZTA, may do so by contacting Nicole White on 03 548 1100 or at WSP Opus, Private Bag 36, Nelson.

17371 Hothouse Creative

Tasman District Council’s roading maintenance contractor is responsible for vegetation control within the road reserve. This includes the use of knock-down, residual and brushweed herbicides to remove vegetation growing in the roadway and around street furniture. The active herbicides authorised under Council’s resource consent are norflurazon, oryzalin, simazine, terbuthylazine, glyphosate, metsulfuron, haloxyfop, triclopyr and picloram/triclopyr. Methods for treatment are foliar and basal spraying. You can request that your rural property frontage not be chemically sprayed and instead undertake the vegetation control yourself. On approval, the Council will mark the no spray area with red marker pegs. Rural residents who choose the “No Spray” option must control the vegetation growth along their property frontage to ensure road users are not impeded and all roadside signs and markers are clearly visible. Vegetation height should not exceed 300mm. Any stormwater drainage ditches need to be kept clear of excess vegetation. At intersections vegetation must be kept well clear to ensure good sight lines for traffic using the intersection. If you wish to apply for your property to be added to the “No Spray” list, please contact Nikki Shepherd, Technical Officer Transportation, Tasman District Council, Phone 03 543 7234 or email – nikki.shepherd@tasman.govt.nz.
