DOC targets wasps

He has also been a regular fixture on the committee for the club. Dan says one of his first horses, Peterborough, still held a special place in his heart. "I won five with him," he says.

Poison that targets wasps in the Nelson Lakes National Park will begin to be placed from this week, says the Department of Conservation. Vespid wasps are now one of the most damaging insect pests in the country, says DOC, with their numbers increasing and threatening native birds, bees and other insects. The toxic-wasp baiting method exploits the social structure of a wasp colony. Worker wasps collect bait from stations and return with it to their nest. They feed it to the queen and the developing larvae which poisons the entire colony within a short time. The bait is made with chicken meat, which does not attract bees and is stationed 1.5 metres above ground to exclude other animals, like weka. DOC says they will be applying the bait from the middle of this month to the end of February, when wasps are known to be feeding on protein. The area targeted is over an area of 1600ha in the Nelson Lakes National Park and in St Arnaud. The introduced wasps are particularly bad in the honeydew beech forests where they have been seen killing chicks as they emerge from their eggs and taking available honeydew, which is a valuable energy source for birds

“The upside is it’s delightful weather to live in - uplifting. I can’t see downsides except that you have to take care with plenty of sun protection.”

“Upsides are that I can get around most of the time on a bike and it has brought a lot of people to Richmond. But, you have to have air con on if you want to sleep.”

“The upside is there’s lots of beach time but the downside is, of course, the high melanoma rate.”

“The upside is more outdoors time, we’ve recently been surfing and boogie boarding. There are no downsides, it’s all positive for us. We spend more time outdoors than in.”

DOC targets ‘pest’ wasps FROM PAGE 1 such as kaka, tui and bell birds. The wasps also attack honey bees by raiding their hives and robbing their honey. The flow-on effects include host honey production, the cost of replacement bees and, in turn, higher

pollination costs for horticulture. DOC says the active ingredient in the bail is extremely toxic to wasps but it poses a very low risk to mammals or birds. Bait stations only need to be filled once this summer and all remaining bait is removed after three to seven days.

The amount of money spent in Nelson in the year to November is up 15.2 per cent to $337 million. Of that figure, $223 million was spent by domestic visitors and $114 million by international guests. In Tasman, $279 million was spent, 7.5 per cent more than the $259 million spent the year before. Domestic guests spent $166 million of the $279 million while international guests spent $113 million in that period. Richmond’s sunshine hours clouded by science Simon Bloomberg Richmond may have finished well ahead of Nelson in the race for the title of New Zealand’s sunniest centre in 2016 year but meteorologists have shed some light on the situation which indicates those results are just a little bit shady. Last week, Richmond was crowned the country’s sunniest centre when NIWA released figures showing the town had recorded 2840 hours of sunshine. Blenheim was second on 2582 with Takaka third on 2534 and New Plymouth fourth on 2503. Nelson slipped off the pace, recording just 2491 sunshine hours after topping the sunshine stats five times and finishing second three times in the last 14 years. But the Nelson weather forecaster John Matheson says the results are shady and the big discrepancy between Nelson and Richmond sunshine hours was a direct consequence of the different equipment used to record the data. John, who is one of the region’s most experienced weather experts, says the Nelson Airport weather station has a “trusty old” Campbell Stokes sunshine recorder which only records direct sunshine in clear skies. In con-

trast, Richmond’s weather station at the A & P Showgrounds uses a modern electronic recorder which measures radiation from both clear and cloudy skies and overestimates the sunshine hours. John says it’s “inconceivable” that there was 400 hours difference in sunshine hours in 2016 between the two weather stations that are just four kilometres apart. He’s also amazed that Richmond claimed the national record for sunshine hours when the Nelson-Tasman region experienced above average rainfall for 2016. “Nelson recorded close to aver-

age sunshine during 2016, which would be commensurate with such a high annual rainfall. How a station (Richmond) so close could then claim a New Zealand record in sunshine defies logic. “I don’t accept the Richmond result as a correct representation of our sunshine status during 2016. The reality is that these two different recorders are poles apart.” Although the new electronic sunshine meters were tested in France against the older Campbell-Stokes machines, John says the setting needs to be adjusted for the clearer atmospheric con-

ditions in New Zealand. NIWA’s environmental technician Ralph Dickson says it’s unknown why the Nelson and Richmond sunshine records are so different but concedes that it’s “probably instrumental”. Ralph says the “new electronic sunshine recorders are the future” and NIWA is working on calibrating the new recorders against the CampbellStokes to ensure historical data can be compared. Politicians have also entered the debate with Nelson mayor Rachel Reese saying it’s time Nelson City updated its Campbell-Stokes

recorder to be on a level playing field with Richmond, Whakatane, Blenheim and New Plymouth which all use the new electronic ones. Whakatane won the sunshine hours race in 2014 while Blenheim won in 2015. “It’s great to see the wider NelsonTasman region recognised as the sunniest place in the country,” Rachel says. “But I’ve spoken to our weather expert John Matheson and he says there’s no way the sunshine hours are different between Nelson and Richmond. John says it’s just the difference between the sunshine recorders at Nelson and Richmond. We have a very old recorder so I think we’ll have to look at updating it.” The Campbell-Stokes sunshine recorder was invented by John Campbell in 1853 and modified by Sir George Stokes in 1879. Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne acknowledges that the new technology may have played a hand in Richmond outshining Nelson, but says he’s happy to take the win. “I’ll leave that debate on the technology to the scientists because they are the experts,” Richard says. “But I do know is that we have a stunning place to live and visit and the weather is a big part of that.”

Nelson choir performs in New York Twenty-seven members of the Nelson Civic Choir are living it up in New York, having performed at prestigious Carnegie Hall on Monday. The only choir chosen from New Zealand, they were part of a 200-strong combined international choir, including the New Jersey Children’s Choir. It was the USA premiere of Welsh composer Sir Karl Jenkin’s, ‘Cantata Memoria’ for the children of Aberfan. Jenkins composed the piece to commemorate the 50th anniversary

of the Aberfan mine disaster in Wales in 1966. The group have spent the year fund-raising for the trip and have rehearsed intensively with conductor Chris Lukies over the past few weeks. Several members of the choir left early to visit relatives and friends in the US and joined the main group in New York. The New Zealand premiere will be presented by the Nelson Civic Choir in October to coincide with the re-opening of the Nelson School of Music.

Cooking and photo comps for Sarau Festival The popular Sarau Festival will celebrate its tenth edition this year and, like previous years, the organisers are running the Barkers Cooking Challenge and the photographic competition. Both competitions have free entry and are intended to ensure that festival-goers feel as if they are part of the event. For the photographic competition there are a number of categories and all entries are displayed at the Sarau Festival. Entries must reach the Moutere Hills Community Centre or the Motueka i-site by the end of Wednesday, 25 January, to ensure they are judged. If they arrive later they will still be displayed, but not judged. The ever-popular Barkers Blackcurrant Cooking Challenge also has a number of categories, and festival-goers are asked to bring their blackcurrant creations along with them on the day – make sure they arrive by 4pm. All details of these competitions can be found on the Sarau Festival website. The festival will be held from 3pm on Sunday, January 29.

Takaka woman rescued after falling down cliff: A helicopter rescued a Takaka woman from a cliff face after she fell while climbing on Friday afternoon. The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Heli.co.nz copter picked up the 67-year-old on the Dragons Teeth in Kahurangi National

had fallen while ascending a technical section of the route. The crew were notified by the National Rescue Co-ordination Centre of a beacon activation in the area. They found the party of three precariously positioned on a small ledge on the cliff face, around 40m below the point from where the woman fell. Despite challenging conditions and the extreme terrain, the helicopter crew were able to winch the St John Ambulance medic down to the party. There she stabilised the injured woman before they were winched back on-board the helicopter. The woman was transported to Nelson Hospital with a serious leg in-

jury and potential back injuries. Toxic algae taking over Tasman rivers: Over the last week, toxic algae levels have grown in Tasman’s Waimea and Wai-iti rivers. The latest results show the algae’s growth to warning levels following a number of weeks of relatively low growth levels. Regular river users who take dogs or toddlers down to play in the water are strongly advised to become familiar with what the toxic algae looks like and avoid contact. The algae of most concern is distinctive, forming mats that are soft, dark coloured (black, dark green or dark brown), sometimes thick (over 5mm) and somewhat jellylike. The Council will place warning signs at the most popular sites if the algae reach levels exceeding 20%, which is currently the case in the Waimea and Wai-iti rivers.

Fashion stakes raised at race meet When it comes to fashion at the Nelson Harness Racing Club’s summer meeting in Richmond, one man reigns supreme while the women crowned a new best dressed but not without a stern challenge from the outgoing champion. Rangiora’s Bruce Gasson was named Best Dressed Man for the second straight year, on Sunday, while it was Nelson’s Julie Denman’s third time lucky effort as she pipped defending champion Angela Miller into second. Julie’s love affair with 1950s dresses inspired her to make the dress herself. “The dress I made myself, I already had the hat which my husband helped me with and the shoes came off the internet from miles and miles away and yes, they are killing me. “I entered last year and the year before and missed out so I’ve finally made it. Julie says she will enter again next year and she loved the day at the races because of the social aspect of it. Bruce says a lot of his attire was inspired by a vintage flavour. “A lot of it is vintage - just going around a collecting bits and bobs over six or seven years and that’s what you see. The judging panel commended the effort as the best they had since in their eight years of the event. “I have a lot of waistcoats and a lot of shoes so I thought I’d bang them all together and see what came out.” Bruce says he enjoys going to the races and comes to Nelson every year. He says he starts thinking about what he will wear roughly a month out. The results are hard to argue with. Carol Vercoe was awarded Best Hat honours while Brayden Mincher and Tiana Simpson were named Best Dressed Boy and Girl respectively.

Wind has fire fighters on edge

Jessie Johnston The strong winds that have lashed the region over the last few weeks have created a perfect storm for vegetation fires says the Waimea Rural Fire Authority. “The ones that really dry things out are the south-west winds which drop rain on the West Coast then come over the hills. They’re hot and dry when they move down the Waimea Basin. What they do is lower the humidity of the air and that dries out all the fuels like grasses and small branches and twigs, so that really increases the risk of a fire starting,” says principal rural fire officer, Ian Reade. “The other thing that the strong winds do if a fire does start is rapidly increase the rate of spread. The combination of those two things can take a moderate-high risk, that we have now, and on those windy days it can turn into an extreme risk.” Ian says that instead of worrying about the increased fire risk in these conditions, they focus their efforts on prevention. This includes publicity and the permitting system, as well as providing daily updates to the forestry industry and operations such as roadside mowing. “We’ve had some smaller vegetation fires in the Nelson area [in the last few months], which we’ve managed to get a hold of,” says Ian.

“The one over in Ngaio Bay was a structure fire but had potential to spread to the scrub if it had gotten away but we managed to catch that, the volunteers did a great job.” Ian says they have also had problems with grass fires, particularly when people light their rubbish fires before the wind gets up and dries out the surrounding grass. Week-old fires can also be a problem when strong winds lift off the ash crust and spread the hot embers beneath. Beach fires have resulted in a number of call-outs for local fire fighters, in particular Breakers Bay and Kaiteriteri, and Ruby Bay. “Most disappointingly with those fires is that we find a lot of broken glass around them, so the volunteers are getting called out in the early hours of the morning to go and put these fires out and find themselves picking up the broken glass,” says Ian. There have been a handful of unpermitted burn-offs on private properties, mainly by those new to the area who were unaware of the need for permits. “Once people know what the story is they’re quite willing to participate,” says Ian. “In general, I suggest that the residents of the Nelson Tasman area are quite savvy when it comes to fires.” While the fire risk is still moderatehigh at the moment, it will spike to extreme in those strong south-west winds and people are encouraged to be cautious.

Plenty of colour at Queens Gardens exhibition Nelson’s Queens Gardens were given some extra colour on Saturday, as they were transformed into an art gallery for Art Group Nelson’s annual outdoor exhibition. Close to 50 local artists displayed everything from acrylics to glass, watercolours to prints, and oils to woodwork. Among them was Richmond acrylic and watercolour artist Janet Adamson who was exhibiting for her very first time at Queens Gardens.

Richmond artist Janet Adamson among her art work at Art Group Nelson’s exhibition in Queens Gardens on Saturday.

Mall Chat • From the team at Richmond Mall, we hope you had a great Christmas break and wish you all the best for the New Year. • December was a great month with Sensitive Santa proving to be a huge success and will be repeated next year. Santa is always a favourite. • Children will be back to school in a couple of weeks and I am sure both mums and kids can’t wait. For all your stationary requirements, make sure you visit Paper Plus or Whitcoulls. • Valentine’s Day is on Tuesday, February 14, and we have a fantastic Facebook promotion running that will see us give away 12 bouquets of a dozen red roses. Make sure you like the post to be in to win.

“It’s a lovely venue for it,” says Janet. “The Queens Gardens are beautiful and to have them as a facility that we can exhibit in is absolutely amazing.” Janet brought 11 pieces, most featuring local landscapes, but it was the Kaiteriteri watercolour that she was working on throughout the day that first caught a buyers eye. “I was just painting the water colour as something to do during the exhibition and they came on over and asked

to buy it, it wasn’t even framed or anything. “I was so surprised but I find that scenes people recognise they immediately have more of an affinity to than others.” Committee member Heather Plowman says the day was a tremendous success for Art Group Nelson. “The weather was perfect, the crowds were very good and all in all, 36 exhibitors sold 120 pieces of art and five of our first-time exhibitors also sold

work, so it was very successful.” The Queens Garden exhibition has been running for over 30 years and Heather says she, and the rest of Art Group Nelson, look forward to it every year. “It’s a real annual event for the community, people look forward to it and come every year, and because it is in such a beautiful setting with nice artwork and a lovely day, people really enjoy it.”

• We are also upgrading the internal and exterior facades of the mall. Soon you will notice the exterior building being painted while the internal changes are scheduled to happen later in the year.

I heard about the great service at ColourPlus in Richmond so walked in with my new house plans with wallpaper in mind. I was very happy with the customer service and range of products with selecting feature wallpaper for the house so it was an easy choice again to get ColourPlus to help me with drapes and blinds for the new build.

Belinda

The team at ColourPlus were knowledgeable and had some great advice using my floor-plans, colour charts and flooring choices to narrow down options, initially from off the plan, through to selecting samples to complement our colours and floorings and importantly fit in with our build budget, finally installing them to a fantastic finish to our new home.

Chloe Kemp is the new owner of Mad Beat. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

Hip Hop studio has new owner Simon Bloomberg One of Richmond hip hop dance studio Mad Beat’s most talented dancers, Chloe Kemp, liked the studio so much she decided to buy it. Chloe, 19, joined the popular dance studio when she moved to Richmond from Auckland when she was 13. She had been hip hop dancing since she was seven and jumped at the chance to continue her involvement in hip hop at Mad Beat. Chloe joined the teaching staff at Mad Beat when she was just 14 and last year started managing the studio for owner

Gemma Laing. So when Gemma decided to sell the business late last year because of family commitments, she had no hesitation in offering it to Chloe who jumped at the chance to buy it. “It’s a life-long dream for me,” Chloe says. “I’ve been dancing for 13 years and teaching for seven so this is a good next step. “It’s a chance to continue doing what I love and encouraging the students to enjoy and love dancing.” Interestingly, Mad Beat is not the first business Chloe has owned. She started her own after school Dance For Fun programme at Henley School when she

was 14 - it was that venture that resulted in her joining the team at Mad Beat. Chloe says she won’t be making too many changes at Mad Beat because “I liked the structure that Gemma had developed”. She says it’s an environment where students “can learn to dance but still have fun.” Chloe says she’s preparing for a big year at Mad Beat, with a trip to Los Angeles for a dance workshop with a group of students on the agenda. She has also been invited to teach at a studio in the UK later in the year. Mad Beat teaches about 200 students of all ages at its Queen St studio.

Flying start to new career for Jim Matthews

Come and see Jim Matthews and Ben Brownie for good old-fashioned service.

www.carcompanynelson.co.nz

The Car Company Richmond’s newest staff member is enjoying selling four-wheeled modes of transport after a life-time of selling, repairing and riding two-wheeled ones. Well-known Richmond cycling enthusiast Jim Matthews thought his working days were over when he and his wife Sue sold their popular Village Cycles shop last April. Jim had spent a total of 36 years working in bike shops around the country, including 30 at Village Cycles, and was looking forward to retiring on their Appleby property. But after six months of travelling and “finishing all the jobs that needed doing around home”, Jim realised he “missed the people” so he approached The Car Company Richmond Sales Manager Ben Brownie about a job. Ben needed another salesman for their Salisbury Rd yard and had no hesitation in signing Jim on. “Jim and his family have been good clients here for a number of years and I knew he was a car enthusiast so when he asked me if we had a job I said yes,” Ben says. “He knows sales after 30 years at Village Cycles and he knows how to look after people so he’s ideal for the job.” Ben says Jim is also a real perfectionist and “that flows through to everything he does.” Although there are obvious differences between selling bikes and selling cars, many

of the principles are the same and Ben says Jim has made a flying start to his new career since joining the team in early December. Although Jim concedes he was nervous about his career change, he says he’s starting to feel more confident and is enjoying his new job. “I had a good break after selling Village Cycles but I soon realised I was missing the people contact I had at the shop. So, when I was buying a car from Ben and he mentioned one of his staff was leaving, I asked if I could give it a try. “I’ve always liked dealing with people and cars are my second passion after bikes so that helps, Ben and the guys are great to work with too. “I’m getting used to it now. Selling cars and bikes has a lot of similarities - it’s just the finer details that are challenging. “When I was at Village Cycles, I could make all the calls but now I find I have to check a few things with Ben to make sure I’m on the right track. It’s been a big learning curve but I’m enjoying the challenge.” Interestingly, cars and bike sales run in Jim’s family with his father Tony spending 23 years in a car dealership in the Wairarapa before retiring and working part-time in a bike shop. Jim joins Ben Brownie, Wendy Brownie, Paul Pannell, David Bradley and John King at The Car Company Richmond. Business Update. Adv.

clUb waimEa From the presidents pen New Year greetings to all. It has been pleasing to see how much the members have been enjoying and contributing to hospitality in the club over the holi- Lewis Della Bosca day period. Many thanks to Wayne and the rest of the team who are working hard to help make this happen. The club is certainly in good heart and looking forward positively to the year ahead as we continue our programme of enhancing Club Waimea and Caravan Park facilities for the betterment of all members and campers. On a more sombre note our thoughts go out to Life Member Terry Richardson who has been very ill over the last few weeks. I have been assured he is on the road to recovery. Best wishes Terry, from us all.

KICK band comes to Club Waimea Don’t miss what is going to be a great night – Friday, January 27. Bring a group, introduce some new members, rewards could be forthcoming. See you all at the club. KICK is a three-piece band with a full-on professional sound, comprising of expe-

rienced musicians from Auckland and Christchurch. The band specialises in 80s music, but will also perform songs from the 50s right through to the present day. You’re guaranteed to dance the night away to fantastic tunes from today and yester-year.

Christmas Day saw the club host some 200 people for an awesome Christmas lunch, along with plenty of music and laughter, well done to all involved. Some people went home with great lucky door prizes. New Year’s Eve – several hundred people attended Club Waimea for meals and entertainment, provided by All Soundz, who did a great job of getting everyone up and dancing the night away. One group had put in a lot of hot air blowing up balloons which were released from above just on the stroke of midnight, thanks to them all. Happy New Year everyone, let’s have a great 2017.

Fishing section trip to Motunau Kevin McKenzie Saturday saw a very excited group from the fishing section travel to Motunau, a north Canterbury settlement, for their annual trip. As per any trip with a group there was the usual stops for a coffee and chat before moving on to the next port of call. The group arrived at the house of residence late afternoon, allowing time to get settled and catch up with the boat skipper to sort out time of departure in the morning. The excitement and anticipation of catching the big one meant

everyone was ready to go at the time of 5.30am and the weather was settled which enabled us to have a great day on the water and some nice fish were caught. After day one there was a lot of chat about who caught what and who got the biggest fish and after this had settled it was time for a good night’s sleep, ready to do the same thing the next day. At 12.08am on Monday, November 14, all plans were put on hold due to the fact that an earthquake had struck and this meant no fishing that day and a bit of uncertainty as to when we may get home due to road closures.

I must say it was a very frightening experience being in such an event and approx. 28km from the epicentre. It shows how important it is to work together as a group and communicate with each other and to those who are at home wondering what is happening. I have to say the locals were amazing. As we couldn’t do any fishing, copious quantities of crayfish appeared on our doorstep, fantastic. This is an event that I do not wish to be involved in again and am sure all of us on the trip would feel the same. Until next time, good fishing.

Thursday night at Club Waimea Raffles aplenty, entertainment and the membership draw on Thursday, January 19, which will see one member win $1500. Plus, mystery draws and loads of laughs. Make it a weekly visit, you won’t be disappointed. Did you know, every time

Design for new trampoline park revealed Brittany Spencer It’s all go at Tahunanui Beach as Pro Karts owner Nick Fowler prepares for the construction of a new trampoline park, after finalising a design and having trampolines shipped from China. Announced in August, the Jump, Bounce and More trampoline park has caused a stir since it was reported in Waimea Weekly months ago. The park will be open to VIPs for a week trial, before opening to the public in mid to late February, a month earlier than anticipated. “It’s all very exciting, obviously we’ve got a lot of work to do but the trampolines are on their way and work starts on site this week,” says Nick. “We’ve got to flatten out and fill this whole area, lay a big concrete pad and then, when the trampolines arrive, we have the fun job of putting it all together.” Nestled between the back of Pro Karts and the Mega Slide, the new park will be made of 48 trampolines, including a free jump area, air bag, slam dunk spot, dodgeball court and a separate area for pre-schoolers. Nick says there will be a children’s area and a spectator area so par-

Most trampoline parks target from four-year-olds to late teens, but Nick says that from the feedback on Facebook, they’ll be getting everyone bouncing. “It’s something that everyone can do, we’ve all had a trampoline in our backyard at some point and we’ve all jumped on them, and

once you get back on one you realise how much fun they are.” The idea to create an outdoor trampoline park in Nelson came from seeing videos of trampoline parks across the world. “I’m always looking online and at the market for new things to bring to Nelson, and as soon as I

saw trampoline parks taking off overseas I thought, ‘yes, this is us’.” The park is set to cost just over $250,000 but Nick says it will be well worth it. Bookings for parties and events can be made online at jump bounceandmore.co.nz

The Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway is about to head into its two blue riband events of the season with the running of the New Zealand Sprintcar Grand Prix on Friday January 20 and Saturday January 21 and the Equus New Zealand Midget championship a week later, on Friday January 27 and Saturday January 28. Both meetings have full fields of 30 or more cars in their respective championships and the calibre of drivers is the highest to be seen here at our local track in its close to 50

year history. The New Zealand Sprintcar Grand Prix has never been contested on the Moutere clay and is testament to the rise of the class here in Nelson. With a 30-plus car field competing, including some big names in New Zealand Sprintcar racing, it would take a brave person to pick an outright winner. The format used to find the eventual winner is based on an American format which will see the cream rise to the top during the qualifying races where we find 12 cars that move straight to the

final feature race, the A main. The rest go into a last-chance qualifier to make up the rest of the eighteen car final, the B main. The winner of the 30-lap A main feature race is crowned the New Zealand Sprintcar Grand Prix Champion. A number of notable drivers to keep an eye out for are the current 2NZ of Dean Brindle and the 3NZ of Jamie Larson who should be in the mix if they can master the small but fast Nelson track. A four-time championship winning coach and three-time Coach of the Year is leaving Waimea Old Boys for arch-rivals Wanderers this season. 2016 Waimea Old Boys senior B coach Wayne Bateman will coach in Brightwater in 2017 after not being reappointed this season. Wayne, who won four titles as a coach at Waimea Old Boys and had been named the club’s coach of the year three times, says several key players from his team in 2016 have decided not to return to Waimea Old Boys this season on the back of the news. “I’ve bled Waimea through and through, I’ve scrubbed toilets and been part of the club for a long time.”

charge of the Waimea Senior Bs in 2017. Jono says there will be a closer team culture between the A’s and B’s this year, with the two squads training together on a weekly basis. He says Scott was “an ambitious coach” who was looking forward to the challenge. Jono acknowledged Wayne’s many years of contribution to Waimea Old Boys in many facets of the club but believed it was Wayne’s decision to leave for Wanderers. “Good on him, he thinks he has more to offer the game of rugby and the club level needs guys like him.” Jono says he was expecting both senior squads to be full of talent with a number of agegroup players making the step up in 2017.

ADVERTORIAL

A clear solution to better vision If you’re one of the many people who rely on glasses or contacts to view the world, laser eye surgery can provide a life-changing return to freedom. The team at Wellington Eye Centre have been offering that freedom since 2009 and say it’s becoming even more attractive thanks to advanced procedures introduced by their specialist ophthalmologist, Dr Andrew Logan. Dr Logan’s been pioneering the latest technologies in New Zealand for the last 22 years, always looking for the absolute best solutions for vision correction. Most recently, he’s found that in SMILE – a minimally invasive keyhole procedure that removes the complications that may have discouraged some people from having laser vision correction in the past. SMILE is the most advanced form of laser eye surgery currently available in the world and was introduced to New Zealand by Dr Logan in 2014. It uses a single German-made

precision laser to reshape the cornea – the front surface of the eye – without compromising its integrity. Excellent results have been reported by surgeons all over the world and opened up the opportunity for better vision to even more patients. “Each one of the procedures we offer offers its own advantages. What’s exciting about SMILE is that the visual results are just as good as LASIK, the predictability and stability is even better, and the eye is stronger and safer afterwards”, says Dr Logan. “People are able to return to unrestricted normal activities, including water sports, just six days after surgery. For people with active lifestyles, this can make all the difference.” This focus on people is another advantage offered by Wellington Eye Centre.Working behind Dr Logan is an

entire team of skilled and experienced staff who are dedicated to providing information, answering questions, and ensuring patients are supported throughout the entire process. Suitability assessments can be performed by your local optometrist, while the actual procedure takes place at Dr Logan’s Wellington surgery. Nelson patients are offered free boutique hotel accomodation in Wellington for themselves and their partner, organised and paid for by the Eye Centre. Many patients take this as an opportunity to relax and do a little sightseeing while they’re there, thanks to the incredibly fast recovery time. The procedure itself is painless and only takes a few minutes, and most patients are thrilled to report they’re feeling great at the follow-up appointment the next day. Complimentary follow-up care continues with your local optometrist for a year afterwards to help patients adapt to their new vision and to ensure it’s an entirely positive experience. Contact the team to find out whether laser eye surgery is a suitable option for you.

Freedom in the blink of an eye Reclaim your freedom with SMILE, the world’s most advanced and least invasive keyhole laser eye surgery. Introduced to New Zealand by the Wellington Eye Centre, it could be the solution for you’ve been looking for.

Speedway’s NZ Sprint Car GP on the line Jody ‘The Professor’ Scott Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway hosts the New Zealand Sprint Car Grand Prix on Friday and Saturday night. Newly-crowned NZ champion Jamie Larsen will be one of 30 cars vying for the GP title. Jamie claimed victory at Ruapuna last weekend to become the first driver to hold two New Zealand titles at the same time. He currently holds the Minisprint title as well and he had the car dialled in on the closing laps to scoot round and claim the sprint car crown. It is a similar format this weekend with drivers split into groups where they will race each group over heats before a firstpast-the-post final on Saturday night. Anything and everything can happen when you’re racing with 900-plus horsepower under the bonnet. Skinny Colson makes a return to Nelson where he won his 2nd New Zealand Super Saloon title in 1999. Former Black Caps cricketer Nathan Astle will be back amongst the entrants along with former national champions Rodney Wood, Jamie Duff and three-times modified champion Luke Keegan. The local contingent consists of Jason Smith, Greg Teece, Steve Sullivan, Kris Gerard, Simon Rieter and making her debut in her very own sprint car is Alicia Maclauchlan.

The sprint car action should be intense at the Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway this weekend when the NewZealand Grand Prix title goes on the line. File image from 2014. flight getting cancelled but some frantic phone calls got him a chartered plane and he arrived just in time for the driver’s briefing.

Shane finished ninth overall, while Brett Nicholls title aspirations ended with a roll over in the second heat. Racing starts at 7pm Friday and 6pm Saturday.

Micayla heads Richmond’s medal count Simon Bloomberg Athletics Richmond sprinter Micayla Whiti completed a doubledouble at the Colgate Games when she won the 100m and 200m at the South Island Colgate Games in Invercargill at the weekend. The talented young athlete had already won the sprint double at the North Island Colgate Games held in Hastings a week earlier.

Last weekend, she completed the clean-sweep of the 10-year-old girls sprints winning the 100m and 200m finals by big margins after cruising through the heats and semi-finals unbeaten. But what was even more remarkable was the Stoke School pupil’s times. Micayla recorded personal bests at Hastings of 29.33secs in the 200m and a stunning 13.94sec in the 100m, only running slightly slower times in blustery condi-

tions in Invercargill. “It was so windy in Invercargill, I couldn’t go fast,” Micayla says. “But I got personal bests in Hastings which was cool.” Micayla attributes her fast times to a lot of hard training and her coach Dennis Kale, who also has New Zealand age group 200m record holder Lucy Sheat in his squad. “Lucy is amazing, I’m so lucky to train with her,” Micayla says. “She

WANTED TO BUY

We’ll get you moving

Do you have any of the following laying around and want to turn them into cash?

Feeding snapper provide opportunity for anglers Snapper in Tasman Bay appear to have spawned with large numbers of landed fish being found to be spawned out when filleted. Following spawning the fish are very hungry and tend to feed voraciously to put condition back on, so now is a great time to be out there and target them. While close after spawning, the snapper will tend to still be in quite good numbers in certain areas, as time goes on they will quickly spread out far and wide so catches may become more sporadic. Snapper numbers in the Marlborough Sounds appear to have made a bit of a comeback this season and it is great to see some really nice fish being taken in the shallows in these areas. The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club will host the 2017 DNA Snapper Cup fishing competition on the February 18. A great range of prizes is up for grabs including fishing tackle, marine electronics, BBQ’s dive gear and boating equipment. Registrations are now open online at http://www.dawnbreakers.co.nz/snapper_cup.php.

New grants fund open for applications The new Special Grants Fund, designed to encourage and support significant new events or projects within Tasman District, is now open for applications. The fund allows us to provide a larger financial contribution (upwards of $10,000) to special events that will benefit our community, providing a range of opportunities and experiences to residents and visitors. Up to $50,000 will be available each year, providing we make a surplus as a result of extra growth throughout the District. In years where there is no surplus, Special Grants funding will not be offered. Find out more: You can read more about the criteria and application process for Special Grants on our website – visit www.tasman.govt.nz, search term “Special Grants”, or contact Community Partnerships Coordinator Mike Tasman Jones on mike.tasman-jones@tasman.govt.nz. Ph. 03 543 8400.

POOL OWNERS CHECKLIST If you have a swimming pool on your property, you can expect an audit visit approximately every three years. In between audits, you can do your own regular checks to ensure your pool is safe and secure and complies with regulations. My pool has a physical barrier that restricts access to children under 5 years old. My pool gates open away from the pool, self-close and have a child proof latch.

Upcoming maritime events Waka Ama Event Reservation and speed limit uplift

I have a backflow preventer on the tap used for filling the pool.

The Maitahi Outrigger Canoe Club will be holding a regatta at Lake Rotoiti between 4:00 pm and 8:00 pm on Friday 10 February and between 8am and 5pm on Saturday 11 February 2017. • Other lake users are encouraged to use the ramp and beaches of West Bay for access during the event. • People wishing to waterski should perform deep water starts outside of the reserved area while the reservation is in force. • Powered vessel operators are also reminded to give way to Waka Ama and avoid causing unnecessary risk with vessel wakes outside of this area. Other events • 4 and 5 March Classic Boat Show Lake Rotoiti • 1 and 2 April Power Boat Regatta Lake Rotoiti Due to Navigation Safety requirements, water users not involved in these events may be excluded from defined areas during these activities. Notices will be placed at nearby access points in advance. Further details for these and any new events are online tasman.govt.nz/link/maritime-events .

I don’t have anything climbable outside the pool barrier. I only have pool-related activities in the pool area. (It’s not a good place to plant my vegetable garden or store the kids’ toys). Remember that ‘take home and pop up’ pools with a water depth of over 400mm must meet the requirements of the legislation. On 1 January 2017, the Fencing of Swimming Pools Act 1987 was replaced with the Building (Pools) Amendment Act 2016. For more information visit www.tasman.govt.nz, or contact Council’s Duty Building Consent Officer. If you have questions please contact the Council on 03 543 8400.
