Demand high for new subdivision Monique Bergman

The demand for land in Richmond remains high with a large number of house and land packages already sold in a new 53 lot subdivision located off Wensley Rd. Four building gangs and multiple contractors are currently on site with an increase of workers expected when stage one building commences.

Nelson turns out for world cup cricket The Cricket World Cup has arrived in Nelson and locals are embracing it wholeheartedly.

The first ever ICC Cricket World Cup game to be played in Nelson went off without a hitch yesterday at Saxton Oval.

A capacity crowd got right in the spirit with plenty of Irish and West Indies support seen on the embankment.

Nelson Cricket Association chairman, Dave Leonard, says it was a perfect day for the big game. “It’s pretty amazing. The ground looks unbelievable and I’m sure it looked great on TV, which is good for Nelson.”

Dave says he was playing first class cricket for Central Districts when the 1992 world Cup was held in New Zealand and Australia and the thought that it would come to Nelson one day was “quite unbelievable”.

Wine and food fest ‘a massive success’ A fine day, good marketing and “getting the recipe right” combined to make Sunday’s Brightwater Wine and Food Festival a success with a big crowd enjoying the best of the region’s wine, beer, food and music at Middle-Earth Vineyard.

The Rotary Club of Richmond’s fundraising event made a successful return to the social calendar last year when about 3500 people attended after it had been put on hold in 2013.

It was even better this year with over 4000 people enjoying the festivities and raising “at least $30,000” for the community.

“We’ve got over 4000 people which is well past the 3500 we had last year,” Rotary’s Pete Glue says. “We’d pre-sold 1300 tickets, which was up on the 850 we pre-sold last year, so we thought if we had a good day we’d get a good crowd.

“We didn’t want any rain but we didn’t want it to be 28 degrees either so we were lucky it was just right. We also got our marketing right and the recipe right and, of course, we have this great venue.

“We haven’t had time to work out how much the festival made but it would more than the $29,800 we made last year - it would be at least $30,000.”

Pete says the all the wineries, breweries and food stalls were busy as were the waterboys and girls from Knapps Lawyers who were dispensing cool drinking water.

It was also a big day out for the estimated 50 volunteers from Wanderers Sports Club, Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade, Brightwater Rural Fire Brigade, St John, Brightwater School, Hype-GS and Nelson Marine Rescue who helped Rotary run the festival smoothly.

Pete says the proceeds from the festival will be donated to all of those volunteer groups as well as to the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter.

“Our volunteers did a great job and we’ll be helping the people who helped us.”

Nelson police Acting Senior Sergeant Mike Wardle says the festival goers were “well behaved and jovial” and there were no problems. He says police stopped 550 vehicles leaving the festival and only issued one infringement notice for a driver with blood alcohol of 296mg, 46 over the new limit.

“That’s an outstanding result,” Mike says. “People are really taking on board the new limit which is pleasing - they know the limit is low and the chances of being caught drink driving are high.”

NMIT cuts Richmond certificates

Students wanting to enrol in retail and computing courses at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology’s Richmond Campus are hoping that a funding application is successful otherwise the courses will be cut.

NMIT has been offering a National Certificate in Retail and Certificate in Computer Technology (Level 3) at the Lower Queen St campus in partnership with the Skills Update Training Institute. But last week, NMIT’s chief operating officer Martin Vanner confirmed that the two, 20 to 26-week, courses had been cancelled due to funding cuts by the government’s Tertiary Education Commission.

However, Martin says the courses, which had been due to start “in a couple of weeks”, could be reinstated if a last ditch funding application to TEC is successful. He didn’t know how long it would take for the application to be processed.

Martin says NMIT has “an obligation to make sure any of the students who had started the courses will finish”. He also says there are no plans to close the campus and will continue to offer horticulture, fire fighting and conservation courses at Richmond.

Martin says NMIT has been working with Skills Update Training Institute for “nine or 10 years” and is still contracting them to run a number of programmes. The Auckland-based institute is one of the New Zealand’s largest private training organisations.

Skills Update general manager Omid Mohtadi says he can’t discuss the staffing issues related to the two courses until he knows the outcome of NMIT’s funding application.

“No staff are affected at this time but if the outcome (of the funding application) is negative, that is a different story,” he says.

Omid says the two courses had “two to three classes of around 45 to 60 students last year and he hopes the funding will be approved so they can continue this year. There is a waiting list for the courses and he says if the funding is approved they could resume at short notice.

Druids donate goods to Hope reserve Simon Bloomberg

The Nelson Druids have helped enhance the Hope Recreation Reserve donating a picnic table and all the furniture, fittings and utensils in their Maitai Lodge to the community.

The Druids have restored and maintained the Maitai Lodge which was originally situated at Ranzau School before being relocated to Hope Domain where it was used by scout groups. The lodge is still used by the Druids for their fortnightly meetings but is also available for community groups who book the building through the Hope Recreation Reserve management committee.

Last week, the Druids officially handed over the furnishings, fittings and utensils of the lodge to the Tasman District Council to be used by all the community. The group, which has about 60 members, also donated a picnic table situated near the children’s playground which Hope Recreation Re-

The Nelson Motor Show has exceeded the expectations of organiser Steve Steele with a record number of people enjoying the three day event.

The show began with a Black Friday Cruz around Nelson and Richmond and ended with a prize giving and raffle draw on Sunday. Over the three days of the motor show, three convertible cars were raffled off to new owners with a BMW making its way to Clyde, a Mustang heading off to Christchurch and a Ford Capri going to Richmond man, Al Bates.

The highlight of the weekend also saw a night of entertainment thanks to Urzila Carlson, at which an airbrushed portrait of the show’s original special guest, Ewen Gilmour, was auctioned off for $1600.

Amongst those with cars on display at the motor show was Richmond man Nick Appelman with his iconic, award winning car, Behemoth. “It started out as a 1954 Chevrolet four-door sedan,

and it’s been fully customised,” says Nick. “I’d always wanted an American car and back in 1991 I had an accident and I had time on my hands, so I started drawing pictures of the car that I wanted.

We changed every panel on the car. First time round I got help from a friend of mine who was a panel beater. It was close but not quite how I wanted it, so I had a trip to America and managed to get some parts that I really wanted, like tail lights, and that inspired me to redo the whole thing to exactly how I’d drawn it.”

Organiser Steve Steele confirmed that the show was definitely bigger than ever before thanks to the success of last year and the fact people were out and about due to other events on over the weekend.

The top two awards for People’s Choice and Best in Show both went to locals with Craig Adams from Motueka taking out People’s Choice with his 1973 Dodge Challenger and Richmond man Grant Kerr winning best in show with his 1963 Holden EJ Ute.

Family ride to raise funds for Child Cancer Andrew Board

Chris Scott has ridden the width of the South Island 11 separate times to help raise money for the Child Cancer Foundation, this month he’ll do it with some extra motivation.

Chris, his wife Sheila and son Ari, will all ride the Child Cancer Charity Ride from Greymouth to Christchurch, raising money for the house in Christchurch where young cancer patients stay.

Chris says, for the first time he knows someone staying in the house.

“A friend of ours, Petra Nugent, had cancer last year, and now her daughter Jemma has cancer and is currently down there having treatment and staying at the accommo-

dation. So it means a little bit more to us this year.”

The family had another cancer blow just before Christmas when Chris’ father was diagnosed with the disease.

“It’s pretty tough and he’s been laid up since Christmas, but it’s great to be able to do a little bit of something going back the other way.”

So far the family have collected around $500 in donations and are hoping to raise $1000, before the ride on February 20 and 21 with 30 other cyclists.

The ride has been going for 28 years and has raised around $300,000 for the Child Cancer Foundation. To donate, you can deposit money into the Post Charity Bikathon account, 38-9001-0022368-00 and use “Chris Scott” as the reference.

Bike star returns to Waimea Intermediate

Motorbike club to host charity party The Reapers Motorbike Club is hosting a heck of a party at Owen River next month and while they’re there they will be raising money for a good cause.

The annual party is now in its third year and will see a couple of hundred motorbike enthusiasts head down to the Owen River Domain.

The family-friendly event is welcome to anyone but does have a motorbike focus. A live band, A.M.O.S, will entertain party-goers on Saturday night and club member Tony Dawson says it will be a great weekend.

“This is the first year we’ve really advertised it to people outside our social club and usually we get around 150 people, so we’re expecting a few more this year.”

Raffles will be held during the weekend to raise money for Child Cancer Research.

The Owen River Party is being held on March 6 and 7 at the Owen River Domain. Entry is $20 and food will be available on-site.

Nelson takes Tasman water Nelson MP, Nick Smith is asking the Nelson City Council to reduce its water take from the Roding River and instead use water stored in the Maitai dam, to help remedy the water shortage in the Waimea catchment that is impacting on the region’s horticulture.

“The City Council has the choice of accessing our town water supply from either the Roding River or the Maitai Dam. Even though the Maitai Dam is at near full capacity it has been choosing to use the Roding River supply as it requires less treatment.” He says the Roding flows into the Waimea system, and “every litre taken is a litre less” that can be used for maintaining Waimea’s horticultural industries.

A visiting golfer at a course in Winchburgh, West Lothian, Scotland, was awarded the equivalent of around 800 000, that’s right, eight hundred thousand NZ dollars, after losing the sight of an eye. The court held the golfer who hit the shot 70 per cent to blame with the club having 30 per cent for not having adequate signs warning of possible hazards. Response from Nelson City Council: Police advise that the recent changes to the pedestrian crossing at Auckland Point and the single-laning through that area have significantly improved safety and lowered speeds.

Surveys and observations show that Auckland Point School does not currently meet the criteria for a reduced speed zone, which includes high level of on-road school-related activity, the average speed of passing vehicles and the number of speed-related crashes outside the school in the past five years.

If safety concerns persist then Active School warning signs could be considered in the future - these flashing active school signs raise the awareness and alertness to a higher level, but do not lower the speed limit.

Do you have a “Business Banking Expert”?

Choosing the right bank for your business can have a significant impact on its success. If you have ever owned a small business, you will know that selecting a bank is a time-consuming process. In addition to building the business and attracting and retaining customers, there is the added stress of organising a suitable financial structure. All banks will advertise that they have a version of a ‘business banking expert’. The level of efficiency, experience and autonomy with these staff is largely dependent on the size of your business. An established, personal relationship with a bank will make it easier for you to manage finances. The business banking market is competitive, so if you aren’t getting the personal service from your existing bank, don’t be afraid to ask for something better, or shop around for a new ‘business banking expert’. You deserve the service, no matter how big or small your business is.

FIRE PERMITS: The Waimea Rural Fire Authority has stopped issuing fire permits on the Waimea Plains after the dry weather has escalated the fire danger to high. Principal Rural Fire officer Ian Reade says the fire risk could increase to extreme “if we get two or three windy days” or if it did not rain for two or three weeks. Fire permits were still being issued to orchardists who need to burn diseased wood.

Dovedale Affair a real country festival Monique Bergman It was a real country festival with plenty of music, sunshine, hay bales and farm animals at this year’s Dovedale Country Affair, held in the domain on Sunday.

Headline act, The Gypsy Pickers, entertained the crowd while kids played nearby in the suds, slipping and sliding on the giant waterslide. There was plenty of locally grown produce from around the valley with handcrafts and baking, plus a wide range of food to fill hungry bellies.

Ann Winn, a member of the Dovedale Country Affair organising committee, says they were very pleased with the number of people attending the event and stallholders were happy with sales.

“There were a lot more people through the gate compared with last year and we had great success with selling raffle tickets and our PTA ran out of baking by 3pm. We were really thrilled with the response,” says Ann. The big red machines looked

Animals were the favourite of the day with alpacas, goats, horses and sheep on display as well as pony rides, sheep shearing, working dogs and duck herding drawing a large crowd.

We’re hosting the Clubs NZ conference Club Waimea will host the Clubs New Zealand 2015 conference and annual general meeting next month, a prestigious event that Clubs New Zealand distributes carefully.

It is the first time Club Waimea has hosted the event after it was transferred to their premises, but they are ready to look after the 280 delegates and other guests who will make up the conference party, says Club Waimea manager John Hewison.

At the same time, Club Waimea will be

housing an expo on club related equipment from coffee machines to gaming machines which will be on display for people to view.

The conference is the main event for the club industry nationally, offering a chance for club managers, presidents and boards of governance to come together and update their knowledge on the operation of club organisations.

This includes speakers, workshops and discussion groups on a range of topics

such as performance, financial trends and licensing conditions.

The event will run from Thursday, March 19, until Saturday, March 21 and during that time Club Waimea will be a hive of activity.

The club’s hall will be closed off for the conference, however the rest of the club facilities will be open at all times for club members and visiting members.

One of the more popular activities at Club Waimea is enjoying an ice-cold beer and watching the rugby on the big screen. And our members sure know how to make a game of it.

This year our Rugby Supporters Club has a record number of entries in the Super 15 tipping competition, which started over the weekend.

The Club Waimea Snooker section will officially commence their 2015 season by contesting the Rex Plum Memorial Trophy on Sunday, February 22.

This event holds a special place within the section as Rex was a most popular and enthusiastic member, as well as secretary from the time of the section’s inception in 1994 until his sudden death in 2011. The competition is played on a drawn pairs format, with points scored, both for and against, determining the overall winner. The next matter for resolution this year

will be the district interclub competition, involving Waimea, Suburban and Nelson City teams. Along with our own Club Championships, held over several months for different events, and arrangements for hosting and visiting other clubs from near and far, the 2015 season looks to be heading for a busy time for local snooker adherents. Music awards coming to Club Waimea The NZ Sun City Country Music Awards are coming to Club Waimea and those who are fans of country music will be sure to head along for a chance to watch some of this country’s talented musicians perform over three days.

The event starts on Friday with performances by the judges.

Convener of the awards, Linda Hahn says it is a chance for the judges to prove their talents before they begin judging the contestants. Last year’s overall winner Gina Keating will also be performing on Friday as well as Sunday’s finals.

This year there are 56 musicians participating in the 27 sections, from tiny tots to the old time category.

Nelson Pine Industries has been a major sponsor of the event for the last 20 years, although its origins begin with

Sun City rockers had their first meet of the year on Tuesday, February 10.

They will also be starting their beginner’s lessons on March 3.

Everybody is welcome to come and have a look and participate. If people are interested in learning to Rock’n’Roll they

Lessons are ongoing moving through from beginner to intermediate with some of their younger dancers being supported in their bid to compete in the dance style.

Indoor Bowls began for Club Waimea players on February 9. With Outdoor Bowls still being played numbers were lighter on the ground but are soon expected to grow as the

season warms up. Club nights for Indoor Bowls are held from 7:15pm every Monday and are open to anyone. The only requirement is to have flat sole shoes. Coming up on

the Indoor Bowls calendar is the Chartered Clubs of New Zealand South Island tournament in April, a competition that will be hosted by Club Waimea too.

The Nelson Vintage Car Club celebrated their 50th anniversary last year and their next big public event is this Saturday’s swap meet. Originally a swap meet would include the buying, selling and swapping of vintage car parts, but has now evolved into what could be called a super-sized garage sale. All sorts of items can turn up, from antiques, plants, art; nearly everything you can think of. “Sometimes there’s a bit of junk but even that can be another man’s treasure,” says organiser and Nelson Vintage Car Club chairman, Kevin Mercer. “Swap meets I’ve been involved with in the past have been for Winchester in South Canterbury and we got up to nearly 400 sites at its peak.

It was a great way of raising funds for the club and our aim now is to raise money to fund the alterations to our new clubrooms at the Nelson Speedway Association track.”

This is the first time the Nelson Vintage Car Club have hosted a swap meet of this size. As well as creating necessary funds for the organisation, it is a great platform for the public to sell items to a larger audience than they would normally get at a garage sale.

The swap meet will be open from 8am on Lansdowne Rd, with the grounds needing to be cleared by 5pm, and will feature “just about anything you can imagine,” says Kevin. “I know for a fact on one of the sites there is going to be a

The Nelson Vintage Car Club is far more than a monthly club meeting and with a few car rallies thrown in. Their 280 local members are passionate about the preservation of cars that are more than 30 years old, and the group is one of the authorities in New Zealand that have a consider-

able amount of power in assisting members with getting new restorations re-registered. “There are a lot of tough rules today that our cars can’t comply with for many reasons. For example, many of them don’t have seat belts, and that prevents them from being on our roads today,” says Kevin. “We also have a very strong representation to government to assist with laws around older cars, so we’re a pretty important body.”

a national organisation, although Nelson members were originally part of the Canterbury branch but with so much local interest it was decided to form a separate branch in 1964. The benefits of the Nelson Vintage Car Club are numerous for car enthusiasts, who not only enjoy monthly club meetings that can range from a visit to a car in the middle of being restored to a night of ten pin bowling, but encompasses a huge network of car owners available for advice and help. “I really enjoy the involvement with people,” says Kevin. “I’ve been a member of the vintage car club for 37 years and this is the third branch I’ve been chairman of. But what I’ve done over that time is build up a huge group of acquaintances, some of them are friends nationwide, so we can go motoring anywhere in New Zealand and, if we have a problem, there’s always somebody we can call. I would think now that more than 50 per

cent of my friends have come from the car club.”

Nelson Vintage Car Club is always happy to welcome new members, especially the younger generation. Kevin says that it’s also important for the club to focus on fostering the earlier cars and prevent them from being exported from the country.

Dark Sky Reserve in Wai-iti

Amateur astrology photographer, Ralph Bradley is hoping that his new Wai-iti property will soon be registered as the only silver-rated dark sky reserve in the Top of The South.

Having previously lived in Richmond, Ralph was finding it increasingly harder to see the stars due to light pollution, so he moved to Wai-iti where he could view a clear night sky.

“When living in a suburban area, you get a

sky glow and you can only see around 20 to 30 bright stars, I was amazed that I could see the entire Milky Way and stars in detail at Wai-iti, so I decided to start the registration process,” says Ralph.

Ralph is in preliminary discussions with the International Dark Sky Association (IDA) who administer the registrations and has submitted all information required.

A group of local Wakefield residents are organising a 100th commemoration ANZAC service and parade to be held in Wakefield on Anzac Day this year. Waimea Old Boys Division one players claimed their second rugby championship in a row in the Car Company division one final last year.

Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys will enter the 2015 season as two-time defending champions having beaten Wanderers in two consecutive Car Company Nelson Bays Division One Championship finals – but they’re not resting on their laurels, Waimea want a three-peat.

After losing three players to Super 15 contacts and another to a leading French club, Waimea have done some good work in the off season, picking up several new players that will look to pick up where last year’s team left off.

Right on the heels of the division one team will be the Superliquor Richmond division two team and the women’s team, who both made their respective finals last year but failed to bring the titles back to Jubilee Park.

The success of the division one winning side had huge rewards for its players with James Lowe (Chiefs), Marty Banks (Highlanders) and Billy Guyton (Crusaders) all picking up Super Rugby contracts for 2015. That trio, along with Tevita Cabuvati, Pete Samu and Jeff Lepa were also

members of the ITM Cup Premiership runners up Tasman Makos squad.

While club president Duane Whiting says winning the club championship back to back was a huge achievement, the loss of Super 15 players makes this season an entirely new challenge. “We obviously want to back up where we were last year, and try to improve if possible. We have to perform and do the best we can,” he says.

With Sam Prattley at the Blues, there are now four Waimea Old Boys players playing in a professional environment, and Duane says those players are always keen to come back and continue to contribute to the club. It also acts as a perfect pathway for the club and their aspiring juniors.

This year the club has picked up former Junior Warrior Viliami Lolohea, Makos first five Rohan Saifolo and former Nelson first five and last year’s Heartland Championship player of the year, James Lash.

Two new teams will also join the club this year.

play out of the club for the first time in years. The teams will be run by the club in conjunction with Waimea College. Duane says that’s an exciting development. “It’s at that under 14s age that kids are dropping out of the game so we’re hoping to keep them involved playing rugby.”

The upcoming senior season will begin on March 21 with a repeat of last year’s final against Wanderers, in Brightwater.

Pre-season training has already begun at Jubilee Park but Duane says it’s not too late for players from any grade from under 14s up to come along and get involved in a team.

And it’s not just the seniors tasting success.

Waimea Old Boys boasts the largest JAB numbers in the region with nearly 250 kids across 20 teams playing rugby for the club in 2014. JAB chairman Jeremy Salton is looking forward to another successful year with the club’s budding stars, and is encouraging new players to join on the two registration days on March 4 and 5 between 6-8pm at the Jubilee Park clubrooms.

The grades range from Under-6 through to intermediate which is basically an Under-13 grade. From there rugby players play for their secondary schools until returning to the club scene for senior rugby.

Each junior grade has around “two to three teams”, Jeremy says, and those are often divvied up depending on which school the players go to.

Waimea Old Boys is also looking for more junior coaches ahead of the season which begins at start of May. “We’re a really strong communityminded club and we can offer the best facilities in the region so we welcome all families to come along and have a look at playing rugby this year.”

About 100 cyclists detoured through Sundial Square in Richmond last Wednesday when they enjoyed a free breakfast, coffee and bike check as part of Go By Bike Day. The annual event, which was part of this year’s Konica Minolta Nelson Bikefest, was aimed at encouraging people to leave their cars in the garage and get on their bikes to commute to school or work.

Bikers were rewarded for their efforts with a free breakfast served by Village Cycles Sue and Jessie Matthews and free coffee from the Coffee Shack.

There was also a free bike check and giveaways organised by the Tasman District Council.

How do you look at life. During my summer holidays, I had the opportunity to see some of the beauty of the South Island as I travelled with some guests from China.

One of the most beautiful sights in our travels was the Mirror Lakes, as you looked into the still pools the most beautiful reflection of the mountains, capped with a little snow to contrast the colours.

Everyone spending time getting the best photo, then finding just along it was even more beautiful.

As I looked through my camera at the reflection, then above to the mountains I started to think, why am I trying to take a photo of the reflection. Although perfect and so beautiful, no one will believe that’s a reflection, so why don’t I just take a photo of the mountain.

So back to the start this time being careful to take photos of both the mountain and its reflection together in the same Steve Rollo photo frame, and just so eveMinister ryone would believe it is a reRichmond flection, I made sure there was Church of a tree or two in same photo so Christ. the picture reflected the true image of beauty, and the perfect refection in the pools working as the best mirror.

I couldn’t help consider the thought, when it comes to life what do we see, do we see beauty, do we see a reflection of how it is or even could be, or do we see some confusion not knowing which way is up or down.

Life can be confusing, at times it can seem to go upside down but it is how you look life that shows the real picture.

The bible says we are made in God’s image, and living in a country as beautiful as New Zealand, do our lives reflect God’s beauty and love.

The bible explains God’s love for us, plain and simple. God’s love is everlasting, God’s love for us is so amazing He sent His only Son to bring us forgiveness and life. Check out John 3 : 16 in the bible. My life is wonderful, is yours?

First marathon completed at 62 Nobody could accuse Aniseed Valley’s Marina Bennett of rushing into things after she completed her first marathon at the age of 62.

Marina finished second in her F55-64 age group in Saturday’s Buller Marathon after running 42.2km along the Buller Gorge to Westport in 4 hours 20 minutes 23 seconds. It was an impressive marathon debut for the retired Waimea Intermediate School teacher who has been training for a marathon for almost a year and thinking about doing one for even longer.

“I only started running when I got into my 50s and did the Buller Half Marathon five years ago,” Marina says. “I really enjoyed it but it didn’t feel like it was long enough so I thought I’d have a go at a marathon.

“But I didn’t do anything about it until I retired a year ago and had more time to training seriously. I also told someone I was going to a marathon so after that I had to walk the talk.”

Marina’s son George, who is a professional road cyclist based in Europe, also encouraged her to keep training so she could

“He kept saying to me ‘come on mum you can do it, keep training’ and that helped.”

Although Marina says she was “extremely nervous” travelling on the bus to the start with the other competitors, she soon relaxed. “I was sitting on the bus surrounded by all these elite ath-

letes and I wondering what I’d got myself into. But then once we got out and were waiting around for the start everyone was really friendly and encouraging especially when they knew it was my first marathon - it was such a lovely atmosphere.”

Marina says the race went according to plan, thanks to a lengthy build-up that included some 30 kilometre-plus training runs. “I got sore legs but just ran through that. I just kept putting one leg in front of the other.

At the business end of the race, Nelson runner Phil Costley added another win and another record to his name when he finished in 2hr 28min 27sec to beat David Askin’s 1997 veteran’s marathon record by 49 seconds.

Phil now holds the Buller half and full, open and veteran records.

Richmond’s Ian Courtenay was fourth in 2hr 55min 28sec. Motueka’s Collette Read won the women’s marathon in 3hr 9min 37sec ahead of Appleby’s Carol Cooper who finished in 3hr 11min 10sec. Another Appleby runner, Paula Canning, finished second in the half marathon.

Volleyballers take on fire station Jessie Johnston It was all about communication for the Waimea College senior girls’ volleyball team as they stepped off court last Saturday for some team bonding at Nelson Fire Station.

Station officer Craig Davies says the exercises they were faced with on the day, tested how well they could listen to instructions and carry them out in a foreign environment.

The team spent the morning being blindfolded, soaked through with a decontamination shower and shut away in the dark of the fire station’s training tower.

And, by the end, the team all agreed, it was definitely worth it.

This is the third year the team has done the team building exercises at

the Nelson station, all in preparation for when they head off to the New Zealand Volleyball nationals in Palmerston North next month.

“Not many people get the opportunity to do this. It’s definitely different from any other team building activities.

“It helps so much with communication,” co-captain Holly Young says.

Throughout their session at the station, the team was required to complete a plywood puzzle in the dark, with blindfolds on, carry their captain and cocaptain through a decontamination shower and tunnel, and then practice some search and rescue techniques, blindfolded, as they recovered life-size dummies from the tower.

Draft Tasman District Council Wastewater Bylaw 2015 The previous bylaw has expired and the Council has to replace it.

A focus of the bylaw is the discharge of trade waste into the wastewater system. Trade waste is any liquid that is not domestic in nature and will typically come from commercial or industrial activities. Trade waste controls are necessary to avoid operational and treatment problems within the wastewater system, public health and safety, and effects on the environment.

The bylaw softens a 2005 definition of trade waste in a previous bylaw. Businesses or community facilities that only have conveniences such as toilets, kitchenettes, and/or staff rooms are not now considered trade waste. Many trade waste activities are now ‘permitted activities’ and simply need to register their activity with Council. Trade waste activities that are likely to have an adverse affect will need a trade waste permit.

The bylaw also addresses issues such as inappropriate inflow or infiltration, overloading, blockages and working close to the wastewater system.

A statement of proposal is available for viewing on the Council website www.tasman.govt.nz and at all Council offices, Service Centres, and Libraries during normal opening hours.

An open forum to explain the intention of the proposed bylaw and answer any questions or concerns will be held on Thursday 12 February 2015 at 5.00 pm in the Council Chamber, Richmond.
