Nelson Hospitality Awards

Dam must stack up financially Tasman District Council will seek verbal submissions to its annual Long Term Draft Plan this week, with funding for the Lee Valley Dam remaining one of the contentious issues. TDC received nearly 900 submissions by the time the submission period closed last week, with the majority of those highlighting issues towards the proposed dam’s funding. Other main subjects within the submissions were the Saxton cycleway, the Riwaka to Kaiteriteri road, Tasman’s Great Taste Cycle Trail, and the Takaka Aerodrome. With Nelson City Council cutting its funding towards the Lee Valley Dam, opinion seems mixed on how the project can be fully funded. Discussions around the funding could continue for years, says Tasman District deputy

mayor Tim King. But he expects it to be the hot topic when the verbal submissions are heard this month. The Lee Valley Dam will cost $42 million but some irrigators and producers are not prepared to pay huge fees for owning land that will need irrigation. Land owners in the Waimea Plains may be forced to fork out $550 per hectare, per year. The current proposal is for a 52 meter high dam designed to store 13 million cubic meters of water, servicing 7760 hectares of land and providing environmental flow in the river. Dennis Cassidy, a pip fruit grower in Red Wood Valley, says the Lee Valley Dam is a must, but with 20 per cent of his land dedicated to peone flowers that do not need irrigated, he is bemused at why he would need to pay for SEE ON PAGE 2

Emotions trigger on Poppy Day Phillip Rollo Every April, Laura Trigger buys two poppies. One for her. One for Jim. For Laura, the wife of a deceased soldier, ANZAC Day has a more significant meaning then others. But the week before ANZAC Day, Laura is busy selling thousands of poppies on the streets of Richmond and she has done so for the past 15

years. It might just be for two hours on Poppy Day, but Laura says she enjoys socialising with her friends and teaching the history of the war to younger generations. Her efforts have also seen her become a patron of the Waimea RSA Women’s branch, of which she is a foundation member. Laura’s husband Jim Trigger fought

in Egypt in World War II. While he was away, Laura worked for St John Ambulance and later went on to work at the boarding hostel at Salisbury School. She says ANZAC Day will be all about remembering Jim and has already organised a spot outside Paper Plus in the Richmond Mall to sell her poppies. Poppy Day is this Friday.
