Les Edwards, of the Tasman Rugby Union, says he is proud of all the athletes, “Trael is a standout midfield back for his rugby club Wanderers and an integral part of the Mako over his three seasons. He is a strong runner and defender and has excellent leadership qualities.” Waimea College principal Scott Haines says, “on behalf of the Waimea College community I want to warmly congratulate all the athletes and especially those who have history with Waimea College. Wensley Rd refuge removed
Emily Beaumont
A pedestrian refuge on Wensley Rd between the Chelsea Ave and West Ave intersections has been removed due to the number of incidents involving errant drivers and based on feedback from the local community. With traffic throughfare along Wensley Rd having increased in recent years due to new subdivisions, the Tasman District Council had the refuge installed to provide safer crossing opportunities for pedestrians and now they’re looking for a new site. “With the increasing number of pedestrians we need to find a location that better suits everybody including the vulnerable pedestrians in the area,” says Tasman District Council community relations manager, Chris Choat. The pram ramps will remain.

Up and coming Australian hiphop artist, Yully is performing at Rattle ‘n’ Hum in Nelson tonight while on a trip to visit family in Richmond. Better known to her family and friends as Yulunda Gross, the 23 year old says she has always felt a connection with music in her heart. Her dad’s love for great Australian bands and her mum’s taste in soulful mu-
sic with a dash of hip-hop and r&b, has influenced the now perth-based musician. “I remember having one of those plastic microphones that echoed and singing into it until I drove my parents crazy, it just made me happy,” says Yully. At the age of 12 Yully discovered rap music and says she soon discovered she understood it in ways many others couldn’t. Eminem has remained one of biggest inspirations since her rap discovery and she has spent hours listen-
ing to his style, technique, delivery and emotion. At just 16 Yully released her first orginal song called “Relationships”, landing her an American producer that has ensured continued releases. Constantly writing new music, Yully is excited to hit the stage tonight and be joined by the winners of the #YullysFre estyleFriday competition, all while supporting local charity, youth suicide prevention. “I just want to make music that makes a difference,” says Yully.

Primary school student enviro leaders from all over the district were invited to attend the Moturoa Mission, ‘Building Resilience for a Changing World’, at Conifer Park in Rabbit Island on Wednesday. The event, now in its fifth year, is designed to give those students recognition for the work they do in their schools and communities and offers them a chance to mix with other enviro groups. Facilitator for Enviroschool, Heather Graham, says, “the aim is for the students to not only learn more about the environment but also build a relationship with the contacts and educators here.” Sixteen stations were set up around Conifer Park with educators from providers such as Department of Conservation, Natureland, Sport Tasman, Forest and Bird, Nelson Environment Centre,
both Tasman District Council and Nelson City Council, various volunteer groups and secondary student environmental leaders. 20 schools took part with around 160, year 5 to year 8, participants in total. Clair Webster, Enviroschools regional coordinator for the Tasman District Council, says the kids who started doing this in primary school are now leading the activities and teaching the younger ones. “The senior leaders are an example of growing up with the programme running. I think that education is most memorable when it involves experiences. Today is a day of variety and wonderful experiences. They are all leaders at their respective schools, so they can bring back the knowledge and experience and teach others. They are great role models for the younger kids.. It is important for us to continue to care
about the environment, and to give schools the opportunity to get in contact with these providers, helping make that connection for them, is fantastic.” Jacob Jarrett, Wakefield school pupil, really enjoyed it, “we’ve done a good job as a team. We had to find pest plants and I really enjoyed the bird tracking. It is really important to look after the environment, so we can take care of our native trees and birds.” Wakefield school teacher Isobel Ford says it was a great opportunity for the students and felt it was on point. “This was a good chance for our Enviro leaders both to meet Enviro leaders from other schools, and to take their lerning back to school and families. The theme ‘Building Resiliency for a Changing World’ matches our school curriculum focus on engaging children with ‘real world’ issues,” says Isobel. For more information www.envi roschool.org.nz

There have been a lot of changes during Sue McLarens 43-year teaching career, but the one constant has been the never-ending stream of children, and that’s one of the aspects Wakefield School’s long-serving new entrant teacher and deputy principal says she’ll miss the most. “I’m going to really miss the children, the kids are just fantastic, I’ll miss the daily contact with them terribly,” says Sue. Sue retired on Friday, April 13 after an impressive career that has always seen her keep the children as her uppermost priority. Her role as the special educational needs coordinator (SENCO) has been “immensely rewarding” and Sue has long been a tireless and empathetic advocate for the most vulnerable. “It’s been a real highlight working in the SENCO role and gaining support for the children who need that little bit extra. It’s a very underfunded part of education,” says Sue. Arriving at Wakefield School nearly 30 years ago, Sue says the leadership of the school has always been of the highest standard. “The leadership here has been a real highlight of my career, from the late Peter Ross who was principal to our current principal, Peter Verstappen, it really is exceptional,” says Sue. Ski trips and school camps are added to the highlights along with caretaker Bruce’s delicious hangis and her fabulous colleagues. But while the children of Wakefield will miss Sue, her grandchildren stand to benefit as she moves south to Christchurch to be nearer to them.

Rehearsals are underway to bring the fairytale of Shrek to life on the stage at Waimea College toward the end of June. Around 150 students from the college are involved in all areas of the production, from actors to lighting and sound, costumes and set design, and the entire school orchestra. Production manager Pauline
Farley says the wait for the rights to the popular musical to become available has been worth it. “The storyline is just so great and there’re so many characters it requires so much involvement from a lot of kids, so it’s just a great production to be doing,” says Pauline. The story is part romance and part twisted fairytale that follows Shrek, an unlikely hero, and his loyal steed
and wise-cracking Donkey, as they set off on a quest to rescue the beautiful, if slightly temperamental, Princess Fiona. Add the vertically challenged Lord Farquaad, a gang of fairytale misfits and a biscuit with attitude and you have a great mix of adventure, laughter and romance, suitable for all ages. For year 13 student Rebecca Rea, landing the role of Princess Fiona came as a relief.
“I wanted it so bad, since I was year 9 I’ve wanted a main role in a production. And Fiona’s a princess, who doesn’t want to be a princess? Also, the fact she’s part ogre and part human is going to make for some interesting costume changes,” says Rebecca. The school says tickets will be available from next term via an online ticket service they’ll be trialling for the first time.
Work will be underway shortly to widen Richmond’s Bateup Rd and provide a shared walkway and cycleway. Tasman District Council (TDC) is carrying out the work to make the road safer for all users and help cater for increased traffic resulting from growth that includes a new supermarket and residential subdivisions in the area. The new subdivisions include Hart Rise/Arizona and Paton Rise. The road and footpaths will be made wider from Three Brothers Corner to Wensley Rd, and the shared walk and cycle ways will be created. Higgins Contracting will carry out the construction that includes a roadside drain being replaced with piped stormwater and some stormwater storage chambers. TDC project manager Graham Rimmer says the work is extensive and will require Bateup Rd to be reduced to one lane for its entire length during construction. The project is due for completion by Christmas 2018. “We appreciate this is going to be a lengthy period of construction for residents and others who use Bateup Rd, and we thank you in advance for your patience.” Richmond is growing extremely quickly and we do need to carry out some pretty major infrastructure upgrades to cater for that.” There aren’t any quick, easy fixes but the end result will serve our growing population for many years to come, so I hope everyone can bear with us in the meantime,” says Graham.
A vehicle crashed into a power pole on the Wakefield-Kohatu Highway early Tuesday morning. Photo: Supplied.
In the early hours of Tuesday, April 10, police, fire and ambulance attended the scene of an accident where a driver was trapped in her car on the Wakefield-Kohatu Highway. A witness says she was heading to bed at 2am on Tuesday morning when she heard a noise that sounded like a prowler on the veranda. “We were about to close the front door when we heard someone calling for help.” A car had crashed into a power pole, trapping the female driver inside.

The witness and her husband spoke to the driver to keep her calm, before some truckers stopped, moved the pole off the road and were able to help the driver out of the boot of the car. She says her telephone pole was hit so hard that the letterboxes on it ended up on the other side of the road. “It snapped and was pulled right out of the ground.” A police spokesperson says the woman with moderate injuries was transported to Nelson Hospital.

On Sunday April 15, the annual Nelson Mountain Bike Club (NMTBC) Jellybean Alley mountainbike event took place at Moturoa Rabbit Island. Now in its sixth year the hugely popular event drew 380 participants, making it now one of the biggest mountainbike events in the top of the South Island. The idea came to organiser Wayne Pool when he wanted to compete in a cross-country race with his daughters, but could find nothing suitable around, so decided to make his own. Wayne says, “It is now my favourite event to organise, as we get so many families that come along and have a fabulous time together. The feedback about how much fun people have has been really positive!” Past competitor Warren Burgess says, “it’s the best family fun to be had on two wheels! Our kids absolutely loved it, and not just the jellybeans!” The 2.6 km event was run on the conifer park trails which suit all age and skill levels, including children on small push bikes. It can be ridden as a relay, in pairs or whatever people choose. A hole punched “luggage label” worn on the wrist recorded the number of laps

Lower Queen St works to increase Two projects on Lower Queen St are going to ramp up and drivers are being advised to avoid the road when possible. The projects are between Gladstone Rd and Headingly Lane, and will create disruption for road users and residents. The recommended diversion will be advertised using mobile sign boards (Gladstone Rd and Lansdowne Rd) to encourage everyone to avoid Lower
Queen St. The diversion isn’t compulsory and Lower Queen St is open, but there is a much higher likelihood of traffic delays as the work progresses. Both projects are supporting growth in Richmond by increasing the water supply
and improving the ability to drain stormwater. They’ll be drilling through the ground on the southern side of Lower Queen Street to replace the watermain until the end of May. The work so far has been off the road, but is now moving to work in
the road between NMIT and Stratford St. The new pipeline will be in the parking lane, so there will be some traffic management along the route for this works. The second and longer piece of work will be to dig up the west-bound lane to replace a stormwater pipe. Starting in May this will take about ten weeks. Traffic lights or stop/go controls will be used during this time.

Tapawera teens mentor youth Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nelson-Tasman is excited to launch its school-based teen programme at Tapawera Area School this year. The programme pairs senior students with primary school students during the study period or lunch break of the senior student. Running for ten years, the programme has mentors from Nelson College for Girls, Nayland College, Waimea College and Motueka High School being matched with students from their local primary and intermediate schools. Big Brothers Big Sisters programme director, Chelsea Routhan, is thrilled to be commencing at Tapawera Area School and principal Kelvin Woodley is very supportive of

the partnership in his community that can feel isolated due to their distance from Nelsonbased support services. “We have wanted to further expand into the Tasman region for a number of years now. The programme commenced between Motueka High School and Parklands Primary School in 2017, and we saw expansion into Tapawera as another priority. This programme is a model of partnership to strengthen our schools, neighbourhoods and the community,” says Chelsea. Senior students will have an opportunity to volunteer as a mentor and meet with their ‘littles’ from the junior school to chat, play games and develop a friendship. The school-based teen programme
maintains the fundamentals of quality mentoring for which Big Brothers Big Sisters is known: one-to-one relationships, professional relationship support, and a focus on safety for the benefit of the mentee and mentor. “They just need somebody to show up, they need to know that somebody cares and is going to be a consistent, positive influence in their lives,” says Chelsea. Big Brothers Big Sisters has a waiting list of nearly 40 children who need communitybased adult mentors, with over 30 of those being boys. Anyone who is interested in becoming a mentor can go to www.bigbrothersbigsistersnelson.org.nz or contact the Big Brothers Big Sisters office on 03 545 9864.

ral progression for science to become a key focus area in the school’s curriculum over the next 2 years. “We thought it would be a great idea to launch our science focus with a whole morning of hands-on science activities for everyone.” says Isobel. “The children moved through a rotation of science stations with activities ranging from catapult science to magnets to ice cream making.”
With the help of parents, senior science students from Waimea College and Enviroschools Tasman District Council facilitator Adie Leng, the children were able to get engaged with science and were encouraged to observe, infer and question during the activities. “It was an exciting morning,” Isobel says, “ the children were buzzing and the activities generated much science discussion.”

Amy Russ Reporter

Family and friends of Murchison local Joe McLellan gathered in the weekend for a memorial ride and unveiling, to celebrate the life of the loving family man. Tragically Joe passed away on Christmas Eve 2015, when he lost control of the ute he was driving. Father to four, 35 year old Joe was the Deputy Fire Chief at the Murchison Vol-
unteer Fire Station, an active member of the Board of Trustees for the local school and a ‘community-minded’ person who loved a good social event. His step-daughter Alysha Tinetti says there wasn’t an event he was not involved with. “The family wanted to do something for everyone who knew Joe, because this is how he would have wanted it,” says Alysha. “To have everyone he socialised with all come together to celebrate, not only him, but everyone
being together. We chose to do this on April 14 because it’s the closest weekend to his birthday (April 16) and anyone who knew Joe would know that he always had a gathering with his mates on his birthday, and we weren’t about to stop that.” On April 14, friends and family gathered at the Murchison Fire Station to set off on Joe’s usual bike run through Springs Junction to Reefton and back to Murchison, before heading to the cemetery for Joe’s head-
stone unveiling. Ending the day with a BBQ back at the Fire Station was the perfect tribute to a man who was loved and remembered by so many. The Red Knights, an international firefighters motorcycle club that Joe was a member of, have decided to make the run an annual event in tribute to Joe. Joe is survived by his wife Erin, step daughters Alysha and Bevalyn Tinetti, and children Penelope and Anthony McLellan.

Amidst the hustle and bustle of a busy second-hand store, while waiting for one of my teenagers to show me what they were wearing, I watched as a Mum and her son (probable about 3 years old) play with a toy in the store. The boy was obviously very taken with the toy and the Mother did a great job of steering his attention elsewhere as she quietly put the toy back. I returned my attention to my own children and ‘oohed and aahed’ over what they were wearing. However my heart had been snagged by watching the mother and son. I went over to the toy and saw that it was a little pricey for a second-hand shop (leaving that topic for another time). I purchased the toy and then somewhat awkwardly talked to the mother and offered her the toy for her son. What she said next amazed me…… ‘That is so kind of you, thank you so much, when I am able to I will do the same when I see a Mum and child looking at a toy they can’t afford’. In all the years I have been giving away things or helping people out where I can, I have never had anyone say they would do the same for someone else, giving is contagious. As crazy as it sounds, I have found the best times to give to others is when I am struggling myself. When I give away a little when I don’t have much, my spirit rises up and says I will see a better day, I will thrive and not just survive. Giving releases hope for others to do the same, carry on, go for more than they could ever hope or expect. There are so many good things to have in life. May the city of Nelson be known for its kind and generous people, who open their eyes to see the need around them and respond. We may not be able to fix everything but we can, in small ways, spread generosity and remind people they are not alone.

Irrigators raise $16.5, giving their green light to the dam
Heads up! Change is afoot in central Richmond Read on for information about traffic flows and changes to road access coming up soon … There’s a lot happening in central Richmond lately – our growing population and changing weather patterns mean we are in the midst of the largest redevelopment project the town centre has seen for many years.
when – if you can make your trips outside of peak times then please do. And remember, there’s plenty of off-street parking in the public carparks behind the Queen Street shops – access is off Oxford Street, Cambridge Street and McIndoe Place.
The Queen Street Upgrade is well underway to update the ageing, undersized water and stormwater network and reduce the risk of flooding – while also creating a vibrant, modern, pedestrian-friendly streetscape.
The important details
In the next phase of work, beginning this month, road closures are going to create some congestion and delays at peak times around the centre of town. We expect the work to take about six weeks. Thanks for your patience while we future-proof central Richmond. In the meantime, think carefully about where you need to go and
• Queen Street is closed to vehicles from Sundial Square up to the Tasman District Council office. • Talbot Street will be extra busy – expect queues at peak times and please be courteous of residents who need to enter and exit their driveways. • A temporary roundabout will help manage the traffic flows in and out of the Richmond Mall carpark

in reach,” says Murray. “After the Government confirmed its funding commitment through CIIL to the dam project last week, I feel very proud that my fellow irrigators can say we are doing our part for regional water security.” Throughout the offer period, many applications for water shares equalled or exceeded the numbers landowners claimed they would purchase in the expressions of interest survey from early 2017. “That was a clear indicator we were going to succeed,” says Murray. “Some people applied for more shares than they told us they would in the survey, which was a nice surprise and showed the importance they place on the project’s success.” There are several remaining steps in the process before the Waimea Community Dam project can proceed. Both Tasman District and Nelson City Councils need to finalise their long term plans by the end of June, which include proposed funding for the dam. Also, the Early Contractor Involvement process is currently underway to determine an updated and final project estimate before June.

The Waimea Community Dam has even more financial certainty following the commitment of Waimea Plains landowners to purchase more than 3,000 water shares – raising $16.5 million of equity – in the initial public offering of Waimea Irrigators Limited. Waimea Irrigators Limited (WIL) and Tasman District Council (TDC) are proposing to build the dam as a long-term water augmentation solution for irrigators and urban residents. To fund part of their portion of the dam, WIL opened an offer to purchase water shares to raise at least $16.5 million. By successfully raising this capital, WIL has passed the major hurdle to access low-cost debt funding through Crown Irrigation Investments Limited (CIIL) to make their total contribution to the project $38.6 million. WIL Chair Murray King says reaching this milestone means the silent majority of landowners on the Waimea Plains have made their voices heard. “It has been nearly 20 years since irrigators first started talking about a solution to our acute water shortages and here we are today with one

Retirement Now For active older people who enjoy using their hands and keeping their minds occupied, Hobby Central is the perfect place to visit! Hobby Central has recently shifted to behind the Richmond Library, and it still has its great range of hobbies on offer including kitset planes and boats, electric trains, trucks, diecast models, balsa kits and remote controllers. The store also stocks necessities such
as glue, paint, batteries and hobbyist tools. “I can guide people according to their interests and experience,” says owner Barry Andrews. If you want to try a new hobby or reignite your passion for an old one, Hobby Central is the place to go. With winter almost here, now is a great time to start working on a hobby you enjoy. The best gift you can give your family and yourself on retirement is a pre-planned or prearranged funeral plan. When someone passes away, important decisions have to be made at a stressful time for those who are grieving. At Anisy’s Tasman Funeral Home there is the option to make a pre-arrangement. “People can fill out a form expressing what they want when they pass away,” says Tasman Funeral’s co-owner Val Anisy. “Questions like, ‘do I want to be cremated or buried? Do I want to be wearing my rings? Do I have special clothes I would like wear? Do I want my ashes to be scattered or buried at a cemetery?’ Legally, to register a death, people are required to register their mother’s maiden name, which people often don’t know.” Send for a free, no obligation

The NPD Tasman Trophy kicked off in the weekend and promises another thrilling season of club footy. Early competition favourites Waimea Old Boys will look to defend their title after they upset Nelson in a dramatic final 31-28 after extra time last year. Tasman Rugby Union referee and community rugby promotions manager Mike Lash says the structure of the season has changed, with a shorter draw
that will culminate with the Tasman Trophy final. “We have gone for the first round of the sub unions, so Nelson teams playing Nelson teams and Marlborough playing Marlborough teams.” The second round will introduce the cross over matches and the Tasman Trophy will be contested at the end of the season. The blue card initiative introduced in 2017 will again be implemented this season. “That’s around ensuring play-
ers who receive a head knock follow the protocol laid down by NZ Rugby.” Mouthguards are compulsory. Mike says with a mass exodus of players from 2017, this season will see a number of new stars shine. “Obviously, we have lost a big nucleus of players to higher honours and some guys have hung up their boots, but it creates opportunities for a new crop to come through.” Mike backs Waimea to be the front runners this year.

Popular course attracts plenty of riders Around 90 riders attended the Waimea Pony Club’s one-day event on Sunday, April 8, at Eves Valley. Competing in dressage, showjumping and cross-country, the riders enjoyed a well-organised event put on by an enthusiastic group of people from within the pony club. The thriving club has around 55 riding members, many of whom volunteer many hours to ensure events like this run smoothly. Competitors from 7 years to 70 years took part in the jump event, competing from 50cm up to 95cm, and enjoying the cross-country
section of the course the club built many years ago. Located on private property with exceptionally accomodating landowners, the course is renowned for its beauty and the pony club maintains, repairs and renews the course so it continues to be popular. Any interested sponsors to help upkeep the beautiful course are urged to contact the Waimea Pony Club to ensure riders continue to enjoy the course for years to come. Josefin Lerbs will represent Waimea at the New Zealand Pony Club Eventing championship in Masterton this week.

Fierce comp for athletes The conditions were “fantastic” and the parent attendance “outstanding” for Murchison Area School’s athletics on Monday, April 9. Year 9 student Daniel Hawley broke the school’s 1990 record of 1.02.2 for the 400 metres with a time of 59.68.
Several new records were established in the 400 metres event with the new record holders being; year 3/4 girls Kiekie Marshall, year 3/4 boys - Konnah Van Kempen, year 5/6 girls - Pipi Hunt and year 5/6 boys - Jim Gilmer. Competition was tough and
the races close throughout the entire day and across the different grades for the field events, culminating in the relays, with spectators cheering loudly. Red house won both the senior and junior relays to top off a day of great sportsmanship by plenty of talented athletes.

Tasty Bycatch Dominik Berghamer There are days when even the most experienced and successful anglers draw a blank and come home empty handed. When you take a closer look that hardly ever means that nothing was caught (I’m not referring to the shearwater that got tangled in my line the other day), just that no snapper or kingies came on board. There are dozens of species of fish in our waters, yet only a handful seem edible to us, is that true? I do not like to waste fish, so whenever I caught a fish over the last years that had swallowed the hook or was badly injured and not undersized it went in the bin, was filleted and eaten. Of course it was a bit hit and miss, with some definitely tastier than others but mostly they were really nice. Here is a list of my experiences with eating bycatch.

Yellow Eyed Mullets: These make excellent bait for a reason, they are very tasty, just fry the bigger ones in some butter (the same goes for piper).
You will find that where you encounter jack mackerel (yellowtail) or slimy mackerel, you will usually find snapper. So. look for schools of baitfish in midwater on your fishfinder and start fishing – either drifting through the areas or anchoring.

Sharks: We all know that Rig shark make excellent eating, but so do the school shark (tope/greyboy), firm, white flesh, perfect for fish and chips. Spiny dogfish have softer meat with a stronger taste but are quite ok if you freeze the fillets before you cook them.

Nelson Matters Lewis Stanton aka Hone Ma Heke should not get one dollar of public money in his quest to return to his life with a horse and cart. Following a public apology, the Nelson City Council is providing ‘bridging support’ plus help to look for a new horse and build a new cart following years of acrimony with the Council which saw him living on Trafalgar Street in protest for years. I have no difficulty with people wanting to live an alternative lifestyle. There is far more to life than work and posses-
sions. People should be free to decide how much they work, earn and consume. I welcome the diversity of lifestyle choices that people in Nelson make from the professional lawyer or doctor who chooses to earn a fraction of what they could in a major city, to the person who lives self-sufficiently on an isolated back block. However, this freedom does not entitle you to other’s money to pay for your lifestyle choice, nor does it mean you can ignore parking rules that everyone else must comply with. Mr Lewis Stanton has already
cost taxpayers and ratepayers a fortune. The taxpayer has forked out over $50,000 in legal aid and the cost to the council and ratepayers has topped $70,000. He previously clocked up over 700 unpaid parking tickets totalling $99,000. I would hate to add up the amount of Council staff time and the cost over the past eight years. There have also been some nasty altercations with the public which resulted in Mr Stanton being convicted for assault and serving time in prison several times. I am pleased Mr Stanton is no

Help keep stock out of waterways
Last chance for recovery grants
Saturday 12 May, 4.30 – 7.30 pm. Sundial Square, Richmond Step right up to the greatest show in town! Come one, come all to experience the fun of the circus!
Keeping livestock out of rivers and streams is important for water quality. While we have rules about discharges from livestock entering waterways, we can also offer help to those wishing to fence off streams to keep stock out. Funding for fencing Our River and Stream Management Fund provides advice and financial support to help protect waterways. The fund can provide landowners with fencing materials for approved works, riparian planting and management advice. Creating a riparian buffer is the single most effective way of reducing faecal contamination and sedimentation in streams, while planting riparian buffers further reduces contamination and sediment, as well as providing shade, habitat and food for native fish species and other aquatic life. Trustpower Community Awards celebrate 25 years Local community organisations can share in an increased prize pool for this year’s Trustpower Community Awards. The Trustpower Community Awards, which recognise and reward the efforts of volunteers, first took place 25 years ago. Trustpower Community and Communications Advisor Abbie Siely says reaching this milestone has inspired the company to adopt a fresh approach – increasing prize money and widening the celebration to include neighbouring districts. “This year, the prize money for a Trustpower Community Award will double to $1,000. Regional Supreme Winners will receive $2,000 – up from $1,500 last year – and a trip for two to the 2018 Trustpower National Community Awards.” In a change from previous years, both Nelson and Tasman will each name a Supreme Winner, meaning two groups will progress to the Trustpower National Awards held the following year. • The Trustpower Community Awards are open to all community organisations with a voluntary component. • Trustpower Community Award recipients are recognised for services to the community in areas including, but not limited to: Heritage and Environment; Health and Wellbeing; Arts and Culture; Sport and Leisure; Education and Child/Youth Development.

Scholarships for Tasman's youth leaders ful to the thousands of law abiding ratepayers, many of whom struggle to pay their rates demands. It also offends the principle that we all have to comply with the Council’s parking rules and pay the fines when he did not. I wish Mr Stanton well. Living on Trafalgar Street was as unpleasant and unhealthy for Mr Stanton as it was for Nelson city. I hope he can find happiness in a lifestyle of his choice. However, Nelson city ratepayers should be paying none of his bills. Advt.

longer occupying our city centre. I, like many others, witnessed him being unpleasant and abusive. It was unfair on people who work hard in our retail businesses and Council who try to create a vibrant, safe and friendly environment. I appreciate the hard work community minded people like Sean Thomas who helped persuade Mr Stanton to move on. The idea the Council is now going to fork out ratepayers funds to help Mr Stanton re-establish his lifestyle is an anathema. It is disrespect-

Widening of Bateup Road set to begin Work to widen Richmond’s Bateup Road and provide a shared walkway/cycleway is underway this month. The work will make Bateup Road safer for all users and help cater for increased traffic resulting from growth – including a new supermarket and residential subdivisions. The road and footpaths will be made wider from Three Brothers Corner to Wensley Road, and a shared walkway/ cycleway will be created. A roadside drain will be replaced with piped stormwater and some stormwater storage chambers. The work is extensive and will require Bateup Road to be reduced to one lane for its entire length during construction. The project is due for completion by Christmas 2018. We appreciate this will be a lengthy period of construction for residents and others who use Bateup Road and we thank you in advance for your patience.
Part of Tasman’s Great Taste Trail closed for start of hunting season The game bird hunting season in the Tasman region opens on Sunday 6 May 2018 and closes on Sunday 30 July 2018. A section of Tasman's Great Taste Trail passes close to the area where hunting occurs and therefore it needs to be closed during set times on Sunday 6 May for the first day of the game bird hunting season. The trail will be closed: • From Ravensdown on Lower Queen Street through to Lansdowne Road. • Between midnight and 10.00 am and between 4.00 pm and midnight. People are asked to use Lower Queen Street as an alternative route during this time. Signs will be installed along the trail to advise people that recreational hunters will be in the area. It is not intended to be closed on other Saturdays during the hunting season, however everyone using the trail during the hunting season should exercise caution and be aware that you may hear shot gun blasts.
