value. To calculate the fund though, Michael claimed the value of the Village, essentially the roadways, green spaces and communal properties only, not the residents’ own houses, was $19 million.

After talks broke down between the Wright’s and the committee, Michael began implementing a number of other messages, such as barring them from using the communal Blue Heron Lounge in the Village for any “commercial” activity. Such “commercial” activities that were no longer allowed according to Michael included monthly podiatrist visits, garage sales and fundraising activities. One of the key reasons Michael gave for this change in use, which coincidentally came one day after talks broke down, was due to “council stipulations”. How-

ever these claims were disputed by councillor Judene Edgar. “Council has received no complaints and there are no concerns about these activities. I have verified with [Council] staff that they are all allowable activities in terms of the Village’s Resource Consent.”

But the small residents committee of 70 and 80-year olds rose to the challenge and “spent a huge amount of time in seeking advice, discussing, researching, drafting, editing and writing the two submissions” for arbitration, reported the Committee. With help from Age Concern, Nelson Bays Community Law Service, and with “the support and encouragement from the residents of the Village and the community at large”, the committee prepared and presented professional submissions.

At a standing-room only meeting of residents last Thursday, May 12, the committee updated

the residents on the arbitration proceedings.

Family members from as far afield as Australia came to the meeting to support their elderly relatives that had been severely stressed by the situation.

But the committee hasn’t given up. They received tumultuous applause when they announced they would all be standing again at the AGM later this month. Age Concern’s Sue Tilby says the committee deserve a massive pat on the back for taking on the village owners. “Their tenacity has been incredable, I have nothing but respect for the committee.” She says she has spoken to a “huge amount” of residents who have been scared throughout the process and she says the orginal demands by Michael and Carolyn were “totally over-the-top”.

“It was outrageous, I’m shocked they would even look at it.”

Michael and Carolyn have since moved from Waimea Village to a new home on the Richmond Hills.

Stage comes alive as Garin students get ready to perform It’s been a lot of hard work but last night it all paid off for the Garin College students participating in the annual Stage Challenge.

Results were not known before the Waimea Weekly went to print yesterday, but these will be available on our facebook page today.

Garin College students have been working on their performance since the start of the year and have enjoyed being directed by their peers. Four senior students, Emily Graham, Annabelle Nichols, Jeanie Winter and Hannah Gibson have been in charge of the students and say although it has been a lot of hard work and at times stressful, it has been a “whole heap” of fun.

The Year 13 students say anyone who wanted to take part in Stage Challenge was able to, there were no auditions.

The group of students were hoping for a great result last night and say their toughest opposition was likely to come from Waimea, Nayland and Marlborough Girls.

“We’ve really worked together, it’ll all be worth it once the eight minutes is over,” says Hannah.

‘Long winded’ process finally comes to a close at Greenacres Resource consent has finally been approved for the Greenacres Golf Course subdivision after more than four years of work.

The Best Island golf course has two hectares of land it is hoping to sell and has spent the past few years getting consent.

Current manager and president Graham Sherlock says the process has been huge and everyone is very relieved to finally reach this result.

A sporty new coupe from Hyundai will change the game this year. The three-door Veloster has just been launched in Korea. It’s expected in New Zealand late this year.

Among its revolutionary design features are one door on the driver's side but two doors on the opposite side, allowing easy rear seat access.

Veloster introduces a new 1.6-litre Gamma engine giving an impressive 6.2 l/100km, with a manual gearbox driven through the front wheels. An automatic transmission will return 6.5 l/100km.

And Veloster bristles with hi-tech wizardry.

“Hyundai designers wanted to create an eco-vehicle loaded with technology that also gives people the connectivity they have everywhere else these days,” explains Tom Ruddenklau, Chief Operating Officer at Hyundai New Zealand.

“It has cost US$24 million over a 40-month period to develop Veloster – the car is a lot of fun but Hyundai is very serious about this project.”

Veloster is part of Hyundai’s new communication brand in South Korea called ‘Premium Youth Lab’ to target the younger generation by offering premium emotional values. The hardcharging auto maker is limiting numbers available to retain exclusivity.

Unlike past coupes using smaller rear-hinged access doors, Hyundai’s fresh take provides a conventionally-hinged door on the passenger side for safe and ready access to the surprisingly spacious rear seats. The passenger-side rear door handle is hidden to maintain the coupe design.

“And with an interior size the best in its class, advanced safety technologies as standard, and sport-tuned electric power steering plus a suspension setup that’s world-class, Veloster is the coupe we are all waiting for,” said Mr Ruddenklau.

Richmond Mall Foundation still has plenty of cash to hand out The Richmond Mall Foundation is still on the lookout for worthy causes that are in need of that all important cash boost.

Richmond Mall manager David Hill says the foundation has grants for community organisations and individuals that may need that helping hand.

“We also have numerous fundraising opportunities for sports teams and athletes,” says David.

The mall has recently played a part in helping the Waimea College volleyball teams get to nationals and is this weekend hosting local long jumper Brendon Barnett and his car wash.

Alister Gregg can tell you a lot about confectionary. And it’s not because he has a sweet tooth; it’s because he’s run the canteen at the Saxton Stadium netball courts for the past eight years.

Alister’s involvement with netball goes back further than this however, as his wife Dianne has been tied up with the administration for a number of years too.

The Stoke resident will be stepping out of the canteen and passing along the keys just as soon as someone is appointed to replace him.

Alister says the best part about the job in the popular canteen has been meeting the young ones.

Several things have changed over the years though, including the complex where the netball is played.

The construction of an indoor facility was an interesting thing to watch according to Alister, who says the size of the building now dwarfs the old building where the canteen is located.

Stock the canteen sells to netball players and their supporters has also changed over the years, especially the prices.

“I try my best to give something new each season,” says Alister.

Being able to have his weekends back over the winter period is just one of the reasons Alister has decided to step down from his roll.

He’s now hoping he will have a bit more time to himself. “We have three grandchildren in Christchurch and it’ll probably give me a bit more time to pop down there for a weekend to see them.”

Alister says he will be sad to

leave the canteen.

“I’m not leaving because I find anything wrong with the job.

I’ll hopefully come along and at least have lunch upstairs sometimes.”

There have been a number of interesting characters over the years according to Alister, including one who had issues with volume control. “I remember one little fella that used to yell, he didn’t really yell at me he just yelled when

he was ordering things, I guess he did annoy me but I didn’t say anything because he was a customer and then I thought at home he probably had to yell to make himself heard, so that gave me a different perspective.”

It is possible Alister has served thousands and thousands of netball players and their families over the years and he says it is this, the interaction with the community, that he will miss the most.

Guitar teacher has passion for New Zealand music Loyal by Dave Dobbyn has become a New Zealand anthem according to local music teacher Blair Mant.

The Richmond resident has been immersed in music since he was 18 years-old and says jobs that don’t involve music “don’t click” for him.

“They always make more sense when they are music related.”

Blair’s passion for music is largely thanks to local New Zealand tunes such as Loyal and bands like Dragon, a kiwi rock group formed in 1972.

Blair is currently in a five piece wedding corporate function band called Groove Collective. The music fanat-

ic teaches guitar to around 60 students a week, who range in age from six to 60.

Mapua Waterfront Precinct An open forum to discuss the Mapua Waterfront Precinct will be held at the Mapua Boat Club on Wednesday 25 May 2011 from 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm and 6.00 pm to 8.00 pm.

As the Community is aware the Mapua Wharf area is important to the District and there have been a number of concerns and issues relating to these spaces and other adjacent sites. The Waterfront Park will provide a fantastic facility to the region and there is a need to ensure the adjacent areas provide an equally pleasant experience. Some work has already been done in 2008 and the team wants to hear of any other ideas as we start to plan the integration of the different spaces with the Waterfront Park.

Back from the dead, man wakes up as family plans funeral Andrew Board The decision was made, David Currie’s family would not allow him to live life as a vegetable.

They had come to accept medical advice that said he had only a one percent chance of living and if he did he would be blind, deaf and brain dead.

They had made the horrific decision to turn off life support and moved him from Nelson Hospital to Nelson Hospice.

After four days of no food or water, but increasing amounts of Morphine for pain, David’s family thought they had only about 10 hours left with their father, husband, brother and son.

Then he woke up and said he was hungry.

“That threw a spanner in the works,” jokes David’s brother Mark, who along with the rest of his grieving family was in a state of shock as the ambulance was called for and David moved back to Nelson Hospital.

“We had all accepted that he was gone, we were already planning the funeral and he had been read his last rights by a local priest. We were braced to say goodbye.”

In January 2009 David suffered a massive heart attack and two strokes simultaneously.

It was enough to throw him from his bed, where he was sleeping, and onto the floor, wedging him between the bed and wall.

His wife Wendy couldn’t lift or turn David as he laid face down, dead.

It took ten minutes for St John to arrive and begin working on him, but another 30 minutes before he responded to CPR treatment.

David was dead for 40 minutes and for two full weeks after showed no signs of improvement. That fortnight was diarised

by David’s eldest daughter Nicole, now 16.

She goes into detail about the medication he was given, tubes going in, tubes going out, seizures, infection and family meetings, including the meeting six days after the heart attack where Dr Andrew Hamer told them “we don’t think he’s going to make it”.

Mark says the feeling amongst the family was at its lowest then. “We all looked at each other and didn’t want to make that decision [to cut life support] then I said

to Wendy ‘let’s go get some fresh air’ and said what I thought we should do and she agreed.”

Into his fifth day of palliative treatment, including no food or water, dehydration was setting in and his cracked lips were kept wetted with a gin and tonic-soaked cotton bud. His siblings, including a brother from England, were sitting around his bed at the Hospice, sharing a last gin and tonic with their brother.

“That’s what did it I reckon,” jokes Mark.

“He was just missing his alcohol.”

Shortly after David woke up and said he was hungry. Family members rushed to get

nurses who were doubtful but one nurse enquired: “Hi David, my name is Kate”, he answered, “Hi Kate”. “Are you ok?”, she asked, “I’m alright.”

“It was the most amazing feeling, we were all shocked, just shocked. The old bugger wasn’t finished yet,” says Mark.

The elation, surprise and joy was overwhelming he says.

“Our heads were just spinning, he was given no chance, none and here he was talking.”

David was taken back to hospital and within days was sitting up, eating, drinking, talking and even scheming. Nicole was talking to her father when he asked about chocolate biscuits, she told him he might not be allowed it, “we’ll tricks the bastards,” he said.

David, who works at Opus, says he certainly feels lucky to have survived.

“The little things don’t bother me now, if something starts to annoy me I just laugh it off, it is nothing in the big picture.”

And now David wants to give back.

After struggling to do enough exercise he decided he needed a goal – the Buller half marathon. David will walk the 21km and hopes to raise money for two charity’s that mean the world to him, the Heart Foundation and Nelson Hospice.

“They have both been pretty important for me and most people that use Hospice don’t have the opportunity to try and give back, I am so I thought it would be a good thing to do.”

Texas hold ‘em poker back at Club Waimea Hold ‘em or fold ‘em? That is the latest question doing the rounds at Club Waimea as Texas Hold ‘Em Poker kicks back in to action.

Texas Hold ‘Em Poker is another great social opportunity as well as a fast-paced game of skill, smarts and plenty of luck.

A keen and enthusiastic group of local regulars have now set up their own section of this popular, exciting and continually growing version of poker.

Every Friday, in the comfortable club facilities, regristration will start at 7pm with the games commencing at 7:30pm.

Only chips are at stake, but players can choose to play for fun and points in a 10 week competition, or if they are over 18 years-old they can pay $5 and play for points and a share of a nightly pot, which will be divvied up between first, second and third place. So even if you don’t win the final of the poker, there is still plenty to be won.

The rules and how to play are easy to learn. Any of the regulars will encourage

and help beginners who are prepared to have a go. Yet, the standards and patterns used will enable the braver or more talent to take part in major competitions around the country.

Texas Hold’Em Poker is not new to Club Waimea.

Three years the “Super League” franchise started with immediate success.

Two keen players ventured to Auckland to compete and one even came back with the top prize of $10,000. The following year 13 of the Club’s regulars went up to the National Champion of Champions competition, and the Nelson competitors took out the trifecta of first, second and third.

Excitment is instant. All players start with the same number of chips and the winner is the one who finishes the evening with all of them. This means that everyone else gets into a position of “all in” where all their remaining chips are at risk. The result is nearly always in doubt until the last of the five community cards are tabled.

The way the Texas hold’em poker game is played, it is not really gambling. It is a blend of luck, skill, psychology, which is why our fearsome lady members play as well. This game is just like life. In the end it’s not about the cards you are dealt, it’s the way you play them.

Mural – We can report that the wall facing the Kindergarten and the Domain has been waterblasted and is ready to be undercoated in preparation for the painting of the Mural. We have the paint from Resene ready and waiting. All we need now is some fine weather and a few willing workers and we will be set to go. The History of Brightwater Mural Each month we will be putting in a snippet about the Mural. We have highlighted a potion of the sketch and will give you a little information about it.

Marie Greeks who is both an artist and resident of Brightwater has drawn the sketch for the Mural.

The flour mill built by Alfred Saunders in 1855, was powered Your Local Glass Specialists

by a water wheel which drove granite mill stones measuring one metre across. Mr John Rutherford later owned the mill and changed it to a roller mill. In 1904 a big flood occurred that resulted in significant damage to the mill.

After the flood Mr Trapnell took possession of the mill and after repairs, it was working again within three months. He won many prizes with his “Radium Brand”.

Wanderers get set for club day

These days the Wanderers club room is a hive of activity.

With the addition of several new sporting codes recently, the club rooms based at Centennial Park in Brightwater will see hundreds turn out for the annual club day this Saturday.

Rugby league, football, netball and senior and junior rugby all feature at the club over winter and this weekend will see all of these athletes come together to celebrate the uniqueness that is Wanderers.

Wanderers have only one senior rugby team which play in division two of the Car Company senior rugby competition.

This team will be playing at home against Collingwood on Saturday from 2pm, which promises to be a tough match for the blue and gold.

The division two team has had to start fresh this season after losing 14 players from last year. Senior coach Lachie Taylor, who is assisted by Aaron Everett, says although the team is young they are pretty competitive. “Hopefully they’ll keep it up.”

Junior rugby has also got off to a great start.

JAB chairman Ant Strange says this year Wanderers has 14 teams playing in the junior competition, which is equal to around 200 players.

Making things easier this season is the new addition of a second ground at Lord Rutherford Park in Brightwater.

“We now have two paddocks in one patch, which we’ve aimed for over the last few years. Things can become hard due to space so rather than have the kids spread out we’ll be able to have them all in the one place,” says club administrator Diane Drogemuller. Wakefield also host games to ease the burden.

Wanderers netball is also coming along in leaps and bounds this season. The Wanderers A squad is a new team this year and the girls haven’t played together prior to this season and have spent the first couple of games finding their feet. “We’ve started off really great though,” says player coach Sam Lowe.

The season has started with Wanderers A playing in the Senior 1 competition and Sam says the girls are hoping to lift the team back up to premier level.

Local woman Kathryn Orange has come on board as cocoach with Sam. The club also has a new B team which features a number of school girls, mainly from Waimea College.

The C team is coached by Aleisha Cederman and is made up of the same girls as last season. There are also two social teams playing for Wanderers Netball this year, the Phoenix and the Titans. The Wanderers Retro, a master’s league team, also play on a Thursday night.

Sam says all the girls are hoping for a great season of netball and are aiming for promotion up into higher grades after the first round.

Also new to the club this year are the Syn Media Wanderers Wolves. Rugby league is relatively new to the Tasman area and the team was established to lift the presence of the sport in the Richmond, Brightwater and Wakefield areas.

Wanderers Sports Club has come on board and has been able to give the Wolves access to the latest training equipment and state of the art facilities. Those that play rugby league with the Wolves are eligible to play for the Tasman Titans and for other representative teams. Trainings are held every Monday and Wednesday from 6.30pm. Football has also been recently introduced to the club in the form of the Brightwater Bogans. Although they officially fall under the banner of Richmond Athletic, Bogans player Hayden Bryant says his team appreciates the support of the Wanderers.

The club welcomes all members of the community to come along to club day this Saturday from 10am. On the day there will be Mr Whippy, raffles, a goal kicking competition and a BBQ and refreshments will be available.

The netball, soccer and league teams are all playing away from home, but will be back to the club when their respective games have finished. A hangi will be available in the evening for $5 along with live music from local band Dog On A Bonnet. Diane believes the club day at Wanderers Sports Club is always a “buzzy” day. “We like to open our club rooms to the community to give everyone a chance to see what we do as a club,” she says.

In the Grade 1 game Richmond Wakatu Hotel B jumped out to a great start against Nayland College A when they were up 14 – 9 after twenty minutes of play.

Nayland College came out in the third quarter a different team to outscore Richmond 10 – 5 and level the score.

Crucial turnovers which Richmond were able to convert by courtesy of goal attack Melissa Marfell enabled Richmond to claim the 28 25 win.

The defensive line up of Dana Clark, Hayley Campbell and Janelle Macgregor were instrumental in the win as they worked tirelessly as a unit.

Waimea College 9A made every post a winning post when they handed out a 38 - 14 scoreline to Nelson College 9A in the Collegiate 1 grade.

Waimea dominated in every facet of play.

Coach Ann Wicken says the game was a real pleasure to watch.

There was great movement through court, nice straight lines and her girls drove well onto the ball.

Ann was pleased she had the opportunity to try different combinations and each and every one of her players stepped up to the mark.

Davenhill and Hannah Taylor were outstanding as they limited Nelson’s opportunities.

Centre Ruby Jensen had a superb game – she was lively on attack and strong on defence.

The three shooters – Katie Ditzel, Emily O’Connor and Morgan Inch all returned commendable statistics of over 80 percent.

In the Junior Grade 1 match, Waimea Intermediate 8A outplayed Nelson Prep Gold to win 41 – 11.

Waimea are fortunate in having the nucleus of last year’s well preformed 7A team on which to build a platform.

Although there was a settling in period, the girls soon found their rhythm with Hana Tava leading the charge through the mid court. She was great off the line and displayed speed and class on the feed - maybe she has picked up a thing or two from Mum, Miranda!

Defender Michaela Kerr read the game well, was keen to hunt the ball and pulled in a number of well timed intercepts.

WOB put on winning weekend - again Trael Joass must have wanted to have his first legal taste of alcohol with something to celebrate.

The flying winger took to the field and scored two tries for Waimea Old Boys on his 18th birthday last Saturday.

The Stables Tavern Waimea division one team went on to beat Huia 36-18 thanks to the brace.

Coach Mark Milne believes Saturday’s game was definitely a step up from the previous week.

“We were very happy to score four tries but there are still areas we can improve on and we have been working hard to make sure this happens.”

Community groups get helping hand at free expo

Dog registration expires 30 June 2011

Do you want to learn how to raise between $200 and $200,000 for your not-for-profit organisation? Dog registrations will expire on 30 June 2011 and anyone who keeps a dog aged three months or older is required to register their dog by 31 July 2011.

Do you want to hear presentations from some of New Zealand’s leading funding experts on topics like ‘profiling your charity’ and ‘leading volunteers, leading organisations’?

Do you want to get insight into what funders are looking for and how to make sure your application is taken seriously?

The Free Funding Expo 2011, in collaboration with the Charities Commission and The New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants (NZICA), is being held on Friday 3 June 2011 at the Hope Community Church, Ranzau Road, Hope and is free to all those interested in coming along.

The event runs from 9.00 am to 3.00 pm with a full programme of presentations. There will also be 20+ static displays providing information on funding schemes, accountability, best practice, grants, contracts, scholarships, training, legislation, fundraising initiatives and much more.

Tasman District Council will have a display where you can get information on the grants that are available and how/when to apply for them.

Hall and Reserve Management Committees – triennial elections Management Committees are groups of volunteers who look after some of our Districts halls and reserves on behalf of Tasman District Council, taking care of bookings/usage and maintenance. The committees are elected thee yearly.

Registration forms for all dogs currently on Council’s database will be posted at the end of May 2011. If you have moved from another area, or have changed address within the Tasman area, and do not receive a registration form, please immediately contact your nearest Council office on Ph. 03 543 8400 to update your details so that a form can be sent to you.

The fee for dogs that have not been registered by 1 August 2011 will increase by 50% on top of the standard urban or rural registration fee.
