Bumpy road for repairs Members of the Brightwater community and beyond are becoming increasingly frustrated over the apparent inept road repairs at the Clover Rd/ SH6 intersection. The project was initially considered “complete” in 2017, but in April this year work resumed, for what has become on-going repairs, with NZ Transport Agency System manager Frank Porter saying, “we are disappointed we need to return to the SH6 Clover Rd intersection to repair the road surface. The new road surface has settled more than anticipated, creating rutting where the new surface joins the existing surface”. Frank attributed the issue to a traffic flow of 11,500 vehicles daily in a 100km/hr area. A few months later, and with potholes appearing regularly, NZTA senior project manager Chris Nally says the weather is to blame and until the weather warms up the material cannot wheelchairs mobility scooters walkers/canes electric bed/hoists lift assist chairs bathroom solutions incontinence products daily living aids/products

be dried out to allow a permanent repair. “The base course layer of the pavement became saturated as a result of construction continuing too late in autumn. Allowing traffic on the road with the saturated base course can result in potholes forming quickly,” says Chris. During heavy rain periods potholes also form more quickly, a result of water infiltration through the damaged surface. “The most appropriate action is to keep the road safe by repairing potholes as they appear and providing traffic management as required to keep the road and motorists safe until the road can be properly repaired,” says Chris. “We thank people for their patience.” Higgins are committed to completing twice daily inspections and repairing potholes as they appear, as well as regularly sweeping the intersection until they have completed the final repair.

Youth prevails in grower’s comp Dillon Peterson of Hoddys Fruit Co has prevailed against five other entrants to be named Nelson Young Fruit Grower 2018 at an event in Richmond on Friday, July 6. The day-long competition took place at Hoddys Fruit Co, and saw the contestants demonstrating their knowledge and skills in a series of practical and theoretical challenges key to running a successful orchard business. Dillon, 22, was the youngest in this year’s competition, and works for Hoddys Fruit Co on the Waimea Plains. In the five years he has been at Hoddys he has been closely involved in harvest, where he drives a tractor in a picking crew, and does plenty of pruning, planting and irrigation checking. Dillon never intended to stay in horticulture, but a seasonal job has turned into a career that he thoroughly enjoys.

“It was definitely daunting, but a great experience,” says Dillon. “I’m looking forward to nationals and am hopeful about bringing the title to Nelson.” Jordon Mister, of Tyrella Orchards, was the first runner up. Vanita WiJohn from Birdhurst Orchards came in third. The speech competition at the Headingly Centre on the night had contestants imagining themselves as Prime Minister. Dillon spoke about investing in people and the need for biocontrols of pests to a gathering of 230 people, the largest crowd the Nelson competition has ever attracted. Dillon, alongside four other regional Young Fruit Growers from Central Otago, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, and Hawke’s Bay, as well as two Young Vegetable Grower winners, will go on to compete for the 2018 Young Grower of the Year title in the Napier Conven-

Richmond Police encourage people to dial 111 and make a report to the Police if this happens to them. Police say, if he knocks on your door, try to get as much detail for a description of the person and their vehicle. The news was posted to a Nelson community Facebook page, drawing outrage from locals. Users described the man’s behaviour as “shameless”.

The unknown individual has been knocking on doors in the Waimea region for the past three weeks or so, seeking donations for Menzshed. Third forestry fatality this year Shannon David Omlo of Tapawera died in a forestry accident on Monday, July 16, in the Trass Valley area, near Wai-iti. Worksafe say they were notified of the fatality that morning and are investigating the incident. Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter were called to the scene just after 10am on Monday. Duty pilot Barry McAuliffe says that weather conditions were not great to retrieve the 31-year-old male. “We were really lucky to be able to get in there, we had a break in the low cloud

and fog and we were able to winch him out, but we definitely couldn’t fly directly to him. They flew the man to Nelson hospital where it is understood he died. According to Worksafe’s website, this is the third forestry-related death for the year, the first for the Nelson region. In May a 43-year-old man died in Marlborough when he was struck by a falling tree and a 66-year-old man died after he was struck by a reversing vehicle in Northland.

U-turns discouraged on Queen St The 17-month upgrade of Richmond’s Queen St has resulted in the creation of a pedestrian-friendly new streetscape, but it would seem some motorists are taking advantage of the lack of kerb and channel and using the area to manoeuvre vehicles. With sections of the street being closed off during the upgrade, uturns became somewhat of a necessity for motorists, but with the removal of the fences the TDC had hoped u-turns would cease. “People need to recognise

enhanced accessibility by removing the gutters is for pedestrians, not widening the space for cars. U-turns are still possible when there is no traffic, however they should not be endangering anyone,” says TDC community relations manager Chris Choat. U-turns are widely recognised as a dangerous manoeuvre that should only be performed with proper consideration to vehicle positioning, turning radius, oncoming vehicles, and the width of the roadway.

The new buffer strip on Queen St is the safety zone between the road and footpaths, between cars and people, and at no time should a vehicle be on the buffer strip. The smooth, continuous surface is not an invitation to drive on the footpath, says TDC. AA driving school general manager Roger Venn says drivers should never plan to do a u-turn if it means encroaching on a footpath. “Footpaths are absolutely for feet and not wheels and tyres,” says Roger.

Milestones honoured Annette Smith, who joined the Waimea Soroptimist Club in 1993 looking for a challenge outside of work and then spent the next 25 years making an amazing contribution to the Soroptimist organisation at all levels, was honoured this week by her fellow members at a Membership Milestones Evening. In the course of her 25 years of service Annette has never been without an official role, whether local, regional, national or international. In 1999 – 2000 she was

Waimea’s Club President and then went on to lead the New Zealand South Region, and in 2012-14 was the Soroptimist New Zealand National President. She has the distinction of having visited every Soroptimist club in the country. Internationally, she has been a mighty presence for Waimea and New Zealand at every South West Pacific Federation conference in Asia and Australia between 2002 and 2018 and she was the Region’s delegate at Soroptimist International Board Meetings in

Sydney, Glasgow, Montreal and Istanbul. Sheryl Waterhouse, current President of Soroptimist International of Waimea, thanked Annette for her outstanding service to the ideals and values of Soroptimism and for her contribution to transforming the lives of so many women and girls. Also celebrated on the night was Lynne Ehau, former Club President for three years, whose 10th year of membership was marked with a presentation.

Increase in campylobacter There has been an increase in campylobacteriosis cases notifications in the last four weeks in the Nelson Marlborough region. 24 cases have been notified to the Medical Officer of Health in this time, compared to a range of 6-16 cases in the same period over the previous five years. Nelson Marlborough Health is working with the Ministry for Primary Industries, the Ministry of Health and the Institute

of Environmental Science and Research to try and identify the reasons for the increase. A number of known risk factors for campylobacteriosis have been identified in the people affected. These are: drinking raw (unpasteurised) milk or untreated water and contact with animals and/or nappies. A single source cause has yet to be found and investigations are ongoing.

on Friday, July 13, was rear-ended by a ute. The accident that occurred around 5.40pm was attended by police and the fire service. The force from the ute was enough to send the car and its sole occupant smashing through a fence, narrowly avoiding a power pole, tree and house before ending up in a shed at the other end of the garden. Receiving minor injuries, including a cut head and bruised thigh, the injured motorist’s wife took to social media to praise two boys, Brayden and Kaylim, for their help following the accident.

A police spokesperson says both lanes were open and clear by 6.40pm. Tramp ends in disaster at Mt Robert At Mt Robert, the body of 25-year-old male tramper Chien Han Chee was recovered by police at 9.30am on Sunday, July 15, after his earlier fatality. It is believed the tramper had ventured out on a solo trip in the area. After departing on Wednesday, July 11, he planned to return on the Friday to meet up with a friend. That friend raised the alarm when he failed to show.

A team of 12 searchers were activated and the man’s body was discovered laying in deep snow just off the track. He was subsequently flown out by helicopter. Kiwi monitoring news This month, Rotoiti Nature Recovery Project staff and volunteer Wayne Sowman discovered a new chick roosting in a burrow together with three adult kiwis, the father and two un-transmittered females. Last September, staff had detected breeding activity coming from one of their kiwi birds in the area.

Council pursues Local Bill for Waimea dam The Tasman District Council announced on July 4 it will lodge a Local Bill with Parliament to secure access to Department of Conservation land needed for the Waimea Community Dam. The bill seeks to gain an inundation easement over 9.6 hectares of Conservation land in the Mount Richmond State Forest Park. The easement would give the Council or a CouncilControlled Organisation the ability to create the reservoir needed for the dam. The Bill also secures a right to construct the dam on Crown riverbed. The Council has publicly notified its intention to pursue the Local Bill with print and online advertisements. This is the first step in the Local Bill process. Mayor Richard Kempthorne says, while it was disappointing the council had to pursue a Local Bill, it was necessary if the community was to avoid serious summer water shortages for the Waimea Plains in the future. “Despite previous agreements, over the past few months DOC has advised us we can’t use the Public Works Act to gain access to the land we need for the dam reservoir after all. A Local Bill is now the best option for gaining access to this land.” Richard says the Bill was likely to be introduced into Parliament in the week commencing 14 August, after which it will be referred to a Select Committee. The Select Committee will consider public submissions.

Waimea students really wow judges the theme of Distorted Images for their performance piece. Student co-captain Jordana Arnold for the Waimea team says, “it felt fantastic to be on stage”. “We were all quite nervous before-hand but we were also excited, and once we got up there it was a great feeling,” says Jordana. “We wanted to get across the message that you don’t have to change yourself to fit in, just be yourself and express yourself.“ Teams in the competitive section were judged overall on

their performance, soundtrack, costuming, chorography, and theme. Judge Michael Knapp was impressed by the talent, “I can see, going around the country, that if we picked the greatest hits from each location as we go we would have a world class show”. Showquest is being staged in Northland, Dunedin, Christchurch, Nelson, Wellington, Hawkes Bay, Rotorua, Hamilton, New Plymouth and Auckland. Cheerleaders fly high Amy Russ Reporter

amy@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Wakefield cheerleader Ryleigh Dixon is ecstatic to have been selected, along with her teammate Ameleah Thorn, to train in Christchurch with the New Zealand Development Squad. The girls are excited for the opportunity, they had their tryouts several weeks ago, and had their first practice this month. Ameleah says, “it was scary not knowing anyone there, but they were all really nice and welcoming.” Maxine Noar, manager of Electrix Cheerleading, chose the two girls to try out for the squad saying, “a key goal of the squad is to create a prepared pool of athletes to support the future success of our national teams. Being part of this team will give the girls the training and skills they need to try out for nationals next year. Cheerleading is growing all the time. The New Zealand

teams recently took two silvers and a bronze at the world championships in Florida. The sport has been provisionally accepted as an Olympic sport and New Zealand’s status in the world should secure us a place in the competition.” This selection for Ryleigh and Ameleah isn’t without its downfalls. The cost of travelling back and forth every month adds up, so Ryleigh’s mum Suzie has set up a givealittle fund to help cover costs. Suzie says, “both Ameleah’s parents and myself are looking at fund-raising options to help contribute towards their travel costs. “This is such a wonderful opportunity for these girls as they are the only two selected from outside the Christchurch region. It is an opportunity that I don’t want them to miss out on.” The girls next big competition for the squad will be at Spring Carnival in Auckland in September.

The Gables is to be restored as authentically as possible by Keith and Lorraine Davis. Bottom right: An original arms license from 1863 the couple unearthed during renovations. Photos: Emily Beaumont.

The Gables to return to its former glory

Emily Beaumont

It’s one of the oldest colonial buildings in the Waimea area and now The Gables on Waimea West Rd is at the heart of a major restoration project. “We just fell in love with it,” say owners Keith and Lorraine Davis. The couple purchased the Class 1 Heritage New Zealand building

in “an absolute state of disrepair” last September and work is underway to restore the well-known house to its former glory. John Palmer, a somewhat eccentric pioneer of the Nelson region, built The Gables in 1865. It comprised a store, accommodation, and held a ‘Bush License’ to serve liquor. Clay was dug up on-site to produce the 60,000 bricks used in

its construction and the house’s design was based on a home in Ipswitch, England, where the Palmers originated. Keith is no stranger to renovation projects, but by his own admittance this one is a massive undertaking. “We’re going to keep it as authentic as possible. It’s going to be beautiful and our family home,” says Keith.

The first project for the couple has been the removal of the leanto at the house’s rear so they can rebuild and live on-site. A qualified gas service engineer who has spent his career in the building trade, Keith says “it’s the kind of project I love doing”. With around 400 square metres to contend with, much of which is riddled with borer and wet and

Local playcentre prepares to celebrate half-century milestone Emily Beaumont It’s been an integral part of the community for decades and in October, Richmond Playcentre will mark their 50th anniversary with a celebration. Officially opening on May 25, 1968, the playcentre, encouraging parent-led early childhood education, was originally located in a Queen St church hall before moving to its present site on Wensley Rd ten years later. Current president Olivia Hyatt says they’re hoping to see past children and families of the playcentre reunite at the celebrations. “All sorts of people in the community have attended this playcentre, we’d love to try and reconnect

with as many as possible and hope they’ll come and join our day,” says Olivia. The celebration date is yet to be set, although it’ll be in October, and held on the neighbouring school field in the form of “a giant play session”. “We’re really looking forward to it and encourage everyone to turn up and come and enjoy the day.” Olivia says the playcentre is going from strength to strength with lots of families made up from the vibrant community around it. With three sessions every week from 9am-12pm, Monday, Wednesday & Friday, locals down at the centre say they welcome one and all with pre-school children to join them in fun sessions.

Brightwater’s Wairoa River has long been a favourite summer hangout for swimming, barbecuing and trout fishing for many locals over the years. People recall in the late 1940s, as Wakefield School pupils, they would have their 25 metre and 50 metre swimming tests held there. But the day the river breached its banks on January 25, 1986, is one that many still remember. Heavy rain brought severe flooding and slips to the area. A Civil Defence emergency was declared, 100 people were evacuated in Brightwater, it was the first major flood to hit Brightwater since 1939. Silt and debris was littered all over the land. One farmer had 5-6 acres of land under 0.5 m of silt and many of his fences had been washed away and water was around one metre deep in parts of Brightwater’s main street. Donated press completes department Tapawera Area School’s art teacher Kellie Doreen was always impressed by her school’s resources, given their small size. “The technology department had all the mod cons, a sticker cutter and even a 3D printer. “The art-room was equally well resourced with top quality computers and hydraulic presses,” says Kellie. While the school’s hydraulic presses did the job for basic prints, Kellie says it was hard to get the fine detail that a roller press could bring. “There was only one item on my wish list and that was an etching print-

ing press. “I couldn’t justify a purchase of thousands of dollars so made do with what we had.” So when Kellie received a call from Richmond artist Susan Creedy, offering to donate a purpose built etching press and table, there was “great excitement”. Susan was moving from her home and studio in Richmond to retire in Tapawera and wanted the press to go to the school for the use of the students and the local community. “The press is now in pride of place in our art room and the students are creating the most

amazing work with it. We are so grateful for Susan’s generosity, the press has allowed our students to reach new levels of achievement,” says Kellie. Community members will be able to get in on the action when Susan and Kellie offer workshops in print-making down the track, but for now the students of Tapawera Area School are making the most of it. “I made a ninja for my etching, it was the first time I used the machine and it was interesting using something new,” says Tapawera school’s year 9 student, Tom Haunch.

The ladies of Waimea Nelson Inner Wheel support a number of groups within the wider community. On June 14, they donated a cheque, blankets, teddies, beanies and scarves to Foster Hope Nelson Marlborough. The items have been all been lovingly handmade by local members of the Inner Wheel group. Club president, Judy Ericson, says, “it is just a drop in the bucket for these wonderful charities, but every little thing helps. This donation,

to Foster Hope, will be one of many ongoing donations to them in the future.” Inner Wheel was founded in 1924, in England, by Margaret Golding and is now the world’s largest women’s voluntary service organisation, which boasts over 100,000 members in approximately 4000 clubs, in over 100 countries worldwide. Judy says the club supports groups such as Look Good Feel Better, Richmond Scouts, Women’s Refuge, Nelson Hospital Children’s Ward, cancer patients undergoing treatment, Foster

Nelson Matters

I am not surprised that the 2018 census got the lowest level of participation in more than 50 years. I received a wave of complaints from retirement villages that got only one census pack for over one hundred households, isolated rural communities who were just forgotten, people with disabilities who felt that they did not count, and student hostels that were ignored. The Government admitted this week that over 400,000 people were not counted. It has announced that the results are to be delayed from October to next March so as to enable officials to backfill the massive hole

with computer modelling and re-using the information from 2013 census returns. Professor of Statistics from Auckland University, Thomas Lumley, has described the low return as ‘very serious’. The implications of late and unreliable statistics are huge, particularly when New Zealand’s population is growing so quickly. You cannot blame a lack of funds. The budget for Census 2018 was $119 million, up from $90 million in 2013. The fault for this mess lies primarily with Statistics New Zealand. They got so carried away with their digital strategy that

they forgot about the people factor. The success of previous census was in the thousands of neighbourhood coordinators who knew their communities and got everybody participating. Even in the wake of this debacle, they were congratulating themselves on how many people had completed the census online as though this was an end in itself. Statistics Minister and Green Co-leader James Shaw must also take some responsibility. Statistics is not a big portfolio and for the one week in five years of the census he needed to be on the job. He chose to be touring Pacific Islands at this crucial time

Hope, Alzheimer and Dementia patients, Daffodil Day and Ma’s Place. “Sometimes it’s the small things that can make a difference, and we want to make people aware of these things in the community, if people want to do something to help.” Erica Ranger, Foster Hope Nelson Marlborough representative, has been a part of the organisation since October last year, and says, “it is amazing to receive donations like these, and for them to know that the kids will benefit from them one hundred percent. It is really

rewarding.” Bags and carry-all’s are given to children, when they are removed from their home, including items such as essential hygiene products, books, clothes and soft toys, “without donations like these, the packs just wouldn’t be the same,” says Erica. If you would like to make a donation to Foster Hope go to www.fosterhope.org.nz or ring Erica on 0273665003. Or for more information on how you become a member, or how you can help Inner Wheel, contact Pat Burrage on 5482725.

with the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. This was like Health Minister David Clark being overseas on holiday last week during the first national strike by nurses in 30 years. Minister Shaw was also way too dismissive of the concerns of the public, media and MPs like myself who raised concerns back in March. We may have felt previous Statistics Minister Maurice Williamson was hyperactive in 2013 in cajoling New Zealanders to participate in the last census, but Minister Shaw has been missing in action. There is a broader lesson from the Census 2018 shambles

for Government and business around digital technologies. We have had previous failures like the Novopay debacle with Education and INCIS with Police. To err is human, but to really stuff things up takes a computer. A common problem is technology nerds forgetting the human dimension. If Government is to make greater use of digital technology for public services, more needs to be invested in organisations like SeniorNet and support for people with disabilities and those in rural areas. Everyone should count. Advt.

Letter to the Editor sales@waimeaweekly.co.nz Do others think the Queen Street upgrade could be lacking in practicality? Watch out if someone opens their vehicle door just as you are passing close by, as has happened to us. Was it a good idea to eliminate so many car parks of which there already is a shortage, especially for Queen Street shoppers? With all the new houses being built, won’t the Richmond shopping area

need more parking spaces, not less? Parking spaces being replaced with shrubs and seating may look nice, but do we need so many and who wants to sit in the street breathing toxic exhaust fumes anyway? Manoeuvring in and out of car parks into a very narrow street frequently holds up the traffic, often both ways we have observed. Surely it would have been safer to have had a wider road and not such a wide footpath. D. Bensemann

job with the streetscape – it’s just nice to have it flowing again.” Meanwhile, Doug from Richmond Hunting and Fishing says, “it had a negative impact when it was happening, but hopefully the new road will bring some more people in and make it more accessible.” “We are really stoked with the upgrade,” says Andy from Village Cycles. “It’s made a massive improvement to the look and feel of the street. When you are riding a bike up and down the street, traffic is way more friendly as well. We feel pretty lucky that through the whole process we didn’t have a large drop off in the business.” For Bluebell Florist owner Lisa Martin, the view from her store on Queen Street is just divine! “We have an amazing outlook from our wee shop; we see across to the fountains and we really enjoy seeing the dogs and children playing in the water.” So the changes are generally seen as positive and now it’s about drawing people back into town, to enjoy the wide range of retail stores positioned along its stylish new street such as: Resene, Bin

We hope that Richmond residents and businesses see it as a viable community space. In the process of the upgrade, we acknowledge there was some pain felt, but we believe the end result is worthy of some celebration and support to bring people back to the centre of Richmond.” For more information visit www.richmondunlimited. co.nz

Chilly mornings, beautiful days, what more could a man want. I keep looking at the mounting rainfall in my old home town, 290mm in June compared to 45mm here, what more can I say. I think the old grey mare may be putting away her water wings and visiting again very soon. On the Club front, we have been very busy with business groups in the conference rooms, lots of birthday celebrations, and just more people in general enjoying the facilities. We have been busy with a raft of maintenance issues around the place; had the entire building chem washed down, so now looking at areas that may need some extra elbow grease and paint, and our executive representative for the caravan park is looking hard at the overall improvement of the ablution blocks. You may have noticed (I sure hope so) that we have a new music/advertising system in place, which ena-

bles YOU to choose your own songs on the CROWD DJ Kiosk, or if you are very mobile phone savvy, you can choose your music from where you are sitting. Then we can play the associated music video on as many tv’s as we decide, but it also allows us to use our entire system for advertising purposes as well, so keep an eye on the screens, as from time to time there may be a little surprise to be had! Entertainment has been going well, with our usual Saturday night bands, once a month Friday night band, and Jazz in the bar area every second Sunday. Last Saturday we had the Madsen Super Star Show in the hall, attended by over 200 clubbies, and I think it’s fair to say that everyone had a great time! Watch this space (or the tv screens haha) for the next upcoming big event. Well that’s about me for now. Look forward to seeing you all again in the near future; as we know the more you all support the Club, the more the Club will be able to do for you.

It was the final of the Tasman Women’s Rugby Trophy with HLS Waimea Old Boys travelling to Blenheim to take on Moutere at Lansdowne Park. With the Moutere side unbeaten all season they were starting favourites to lift the cup, but if they thought Waimea would rollover easily they were in for a real shock. Straight from the kick-off both teams tried to stretch each other’s defences, but both stood firm. Moutere were first on the score sheet, scoring an unconverted try. Both teams were playing good, fast, attacking rugby and the large crowd was enjoying what they were watching. Waimea finally broke through Moutere’s line with a try to Phoenix Lolly, which was converted by Bethan Manners. At half-time Waimea led 7-5. Moutere took the lead back again, scoring another unconverted try. Waimea bounced back and were play-

ing the best rugby they have played all season. It was the hard-working Tessa Hiller who scored a memorable individual try that was also converted by the reliable boot of Bethan Manners. Moutere were not going to stop and scored a converted try to take the lead 17-14. It was going to be an epic final five minutes. In the dying minutes Moutere broke Waimea hearts, scoring an unconverted try to seal their victory with a well-earned 22-14 win. Senior Men’s Tasman Trophy semi-final Marist 26 HLS Waimea Old Boys 20 The HLS Waimea semifinal vs. Marist for the Tasman Trophy started evenly and Waimea were the first to score with an Xavier Albert penalty to get the points board rolling. Punishing defence by Waimea and strong ball carrying by the Marist forwards was the order for rest of the 1st half, but a charged down clearing kick inside Waimea’s twenty-two lead to a Marist

converted try out wide. A further try to Marist put them ahead 14 to 3 at the break. Just what Waimea didn’t need at the start of the second half was a yellow card to prop Ruben Pollard for infringement at a ruck, followed by a further try to Marist to give them a comfortable lead at 19 to 3. Waimea had their mojo back and were coming home with a wet sail. A further try to another replacement, winger Mitchel Amberger, had Waimea well in the hunt at 19 to 15 with ten minutes to go. The tiring Marist team were struggling to contain the momentum of Waimea. But from the resulting kick-off a crucial blow was landed by Marist, charging down a clearing kick from defence, leading to an unconverted try. Waimea continued to apply pressure to an undersiege Marist defence and fullback Caleb Coventry dotted down out wide on the right. HLS Waimea can be proud of its season which brought a lot of young players into more game time than expected and this will be better for them in seasons to come.

1

Senior B’s HLS Waimea Old Boy’s 10 v Huia Birdhurst 13 It was a game to forget for the HLS Waimea Division 2 side, going down 13-10 to Huia Birdhurst. Waimea were looking to build towards their upcoming semi-final and started well, spending the first 10 minutes in the opposition half but just couldn’t get any points despite their attacking efforts. It only took a big run from the Huia centre for them to get their tails up. Shane Laurence managed to put Waimea in the board just before the break to make it 5-10. It was Shane again in the second half to dot down and level things up at 10 all. A penalty conceded to Huia with 10 minutes to go was the difference as they converted it and hung on to seal the victory. The pick of the players were young prop Adam Hahn and Tonili Afoia in the backs. Next week has Waimea in the semi against Collingwood in Collingwood.

Cyclists future looks on track Amy Russ Reporter

amy@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Shaane Fulton is one of fourteen, in a Kiwi riding team, who will be representing Cycling New Zealand in Switzerland in August. The Junior World Track Cycling Championships will be held at the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) headquarters in Aigle next month, and Shaane says she is “super excited” to be competing. “It will be cool to be back competing in the champs again. I competed in Italy last year and it was so overwhelming! But now I know what to expect going into this year’s race, I can relax a little bit and enjoy it.” Coming from an elite cycling background, her mother

and father, Karen and Dean Fulton, and her grandmother, Christine van Hoppe, are all standout cyclists in their own right, she says it is in her blood, “I guess you could say it has passed down through the family! “My nana was president of Tasman Wheelers for many, many years, she was president when I started racing, she has been a huge influence on me. Mum and Dad have been huge supporters right from the start. They gave me the nudge, they took me to Junior Trackies (Nelson Cycle Club) and they have always been there through everything. Mum’s cycling has always been an inspiration for me personally, and to be a high-performance athlete is my goal. Watching those athletes on the track, that is where I

want to be.” Her family will be meeting Shaane over in Switzerland for the event, but in the meantime she is in Cambridge with the rest of the team, for a month-long training camp to finish her build-up before flying out to the event. “Our families are meeting us over there, at the champs. It was amazing last year to have our own little Kiwi crowd waving the New Zealand flag and seeing familiar faces in the crowd. It was pretty special.” This will be Shaane’s last year competing at Junior level as next year, she says, she will be playing with the big guns and is looking forward to stepping up to the challenge. You can follow Shaane’s progress on her Facebook page: Shaane Fulton Junior Athlete

Richmond F45 battle hard against Prices After an impressive second round, Richmond F45 failed to maintain its winning streak against Prices Pharmacy in last Thursday’s premier netball game at Saxton Stadium. A slow start set the scene for the evening’s match, Richmond F45 struggling to get points on the board against a fired up Prices Pharmacy side. Kat Jones was back in full force in her familiar goal defence position and combined well with Amy Cunningham in the defensive unit. Sharon Finch gained good space finding opportune ball, however the first quarter ended two points in Prices Pharmacy’s favour (9-7). A timely deflection from Rebekah Shepherd caused a muchneeded turnover in the early stages of the second quarter. Although there was some accurate

shooting from Belinda Koloamatangi, Prices Pharmacy capitalised on any misses, increasing their lead. Strong rebounding from Amy and effective confusing of space with Kat helped to keep Richmond F45 in the game. Kat caused a flurry of havoc in the third quarter, gaining pickups and rebounds whilst communicating well with her defensive teammates, however the attacking end lost momentum. McKenzie Orange supported well in the wing defence position, creating turnovers and driving good ball through the court. Sharon stepped up a notch in the fourth quarter with skilful turnovers. Marina Hirst Tristram made an impact from the rear, but it wasn’t enough to pip Prices at the post, who walked away with a 42-34 win.

Sole female referee represents New Zealand at World Cup Amy Russ Richmond’s Courtney Hawke is the only female from New Zealand to be selected to referee at the upcoming Youth Touch World Cup in Malaysia, in August. Courtney will be joining seven other Kiwis, as part of a 40-member team of referees, to officiate at the event. The ex-Waimea College student, who now studies health science at Otago University, says she is pretty excited about going, “I went to the last one, years ago, and saw the other refs representing, I never thought that it would be me in four years’ time!” Playing the sport from a very young age, Courtney says it was her dad that got it all going, “My dad coached my brother, so we would get dragged along to the games, and it started from there. I am hoping to get to the Open World Cup next year, and to complete

my Open Level 4 certificate, but that is still a few years away. I need more experience and exposure to the sport.” With family still living in the district, Courtney says her brother Blake is following her lead. “Blake just got his level one referee’s certificate, so I better watch out, he is catching up! He is the same age I was when I started refereeing.” Courtney says there is a noticeable shortage of female referees in New Zealand, and hopes to inspire young females to get involved. “The number of female refs is really limited in New Zealand and that’s what drove me to start with it. I think it is due to the amount of pressure that comes with it, no one like to be told they have done something wrong, especially in that environment, so I think that is hard for people to deal with. I hope to see some young blood coming through and taking it up.”

Nationals await junior squash players Three talented Club Waimea Squash Juniors are on their way to the Secondary School Nationals in Palmerston North in early August this year. Henry Aitken, Jayden Friend and Liam Gale competed earlier this year in the local Tasman Second-

ary Schools competition, coming in second place to Marlborough Boys A Team. The boys will now be joined by two newcomers to squash, Mason Bell and Sam Smith, to make up the squad of five needed for the National’s competition.

Attendance at the Nationals is compulsory for any junior/senior to be selected in the NZ Secondary school team that competes against Australia in the TransTasman competition in midAugust. Henry Aitken and Liam Gale have put forward their nom-

inations to be selected in the NZ team and we wish them all the best for selection. Fund-raising to help the team travel to Nationals has already begun and on August 16 there is a quiz night at Brightwater’s Sprig & Fern. Get a few friends together

and get down there for a 7.30pm start. All entry fee money from the quiz ($3 per person) goes to the Squash Team. The team wish to thank all the local businesses that have supported the Waimea College Squash Team.

And earlier in the week the 4th division Bogans side had defaulted in their game. The match covered on Saturday, July 14, however was the Global Wings Travel Richmond Colts 3rd division team which took on FC Nelson Bays Joinery on the muddy Victory Square pitch. The game started slowly with both teams warming up to the task. The first chance came to the Colts in the 15th minute when Max Squire squared the ball across the face of goal to Ashley Keen who, on another day, would have made better use of the opportunity. The game quickened in pace as the Colts became more confident on the ball, though FC still favoured in possession. Moments before the break Andy Clover was called to make a sharp save, sticking out his left boot to deny FC the opening goal. The second half continued in similar fashion, with FC keeping the pressure on the Colts. Andy was called to make a few more saves as the half wore on, putting his name forward for Richmond’s man of the match. However, the game

did not end goal-less as, 10 minutes before full time, FC were on the board courtesy of an unfortunate deflection which sent the ball rolling into the opposite corner to which the keeper had covered. Having conceded a goal, the Colts were seeing more ball with Findlay Young having his shot well-blocked by an FC defender. The Colts were vulnerable on the break, with Andy being forced into making a couple more saves in the dying minutes. The game ended 1-0 to FC Nelson, with the Richmond Colts unlucky to walk away without a point. Back at Jubilee Park, the fans weren’t treated to any wins from the home teams with the 1st team going down to stronger Nelson College side, the Hornbills losing to Suburbs, Thistle narrowly losing to Wakefield in an 11-goal thriller, and the Stags coming close but finishing with a draw against their Wakefield opponents.
