New native forest for Richmond Matt McCrorie Reporter

matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Richmond residents will be looking at a range of native plants in the future, thanks to a plan to retire council owned forestry. Kingsland Forest, which cov-

ers around 150 hectares on the ranges behind Richmond is one of several council owned forests used to raise revenue and reduce the demand on rates. Other forests like Moturoa/Rabbit Island, are also popular walking and biking spots. Currently most of the forest is planted with pinus radiata. Most

of these trees are due to be harvested in the next few years. The forest is also home to several native species that are currently being restored through planting and pest control. A draft plan to retire the land from commercial forestry and replant it with natives was approved by councillors unani-

mously at a full council meeting last Thursday. The council began a process to develop the Kingsland Forest plan last December, with councillor’s Tim King, David Ogilvie and Trevor Tuffnell steering the group, along with council staff. The draft plan recommended to the council to retire the land from

commercial forestry following the harvest of existing trees and planting permanent native forest instead. According to the plan, this will have a range of benefits for the region, including recreational use and biodiversity.
