Councillor Dana Wensley is advocating for more support for the Cancer Society, despite this
year’s event being postponed due to fears that Covid-19 will spread. Dana is no stranger to battles. Last June, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Despite a family history of breast cancer, Dana says it came as a
complete shock. “I was devastated,” she says. “I’ve always kept myself fit and healthy, and it felt unfair. But cancer is unfair” After being denied a biopsy after discovering breast changes and
being told to return to Nelson Hospital in 6 months for a repeat MRI, Dana says that with a family history of breast cancer, waiting around ‘was not an option.’ “I said, ‘I’m not going to be one of those women who falls through
the cracks. I’m not.’” Dana then went private for her biopsy, paying out of pocket, which led to an eventual diagnosis of breast cancer, but she says

The weather was perfect, and the crowd was in good form. It was Gaynor Fisher’s first time, but it won’t be her last. “This is brilliant, you can’t help trying to stay clean at first but then you get past the point of no return and then bam, head to toe it is,” she says. Events around the region are being cancelled as fears around the spread of Covid-19 increase. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced a ban on gatherings of more than 500 people in an effort to stop the spread of the coronavirus outbreak. “If those gatherings have large numbers of people where they are in close contact with one another, where they, for instance, aren’t in things like allocated seating where it’s hard for us to trace them, those gatherings won’t be going ahead,” she said. The ban will apply to nonessential events like sporting activities, music festivals and religious and cultural events, but will exclude schools and universities. Councillor advocates for Cancer Society from PAGE 1 the stress was ‘exhausting.’ “It ate me up, it was really stressful being let down by the system and having to figure it out on your own. “Cancer is a hard pathway. It’s not like breaking your leg, where you know it’s going to heal and get better every month. You have so much uncertainty, and there are a lot of difficult decisions that you have to make for yourself.” Since her diagnosis Dana has undergone several major operations, including two mastectomies. She says she wouldn’t have gotten through it without the support of organisations like the Cancer Society.
“The cancer society has been crucial. I just felt like they embraced me.” One of the key elements of support that the Cancer Society provided was counselling and an 8-week funded fitness rehabilitation programme, working with strength and conditioning coach Tyson Fitzpatrick. “I had never been to a gym before, so it was incredibly daunting,” Dana says. “I was extremely limited in my movement, and the programme has helped to make me feel strong again. When you feel strong physically, you start to feel strong mentally.” Programmes like the fitness course provided have
been ‘crucial’ to recovery, Dana says. “God knows what would happen to me, and other people, without the Cancer Society. They are fundamental to society.” Dana says that while she is disappointed that the relay won’t be taking place, she believes that supporting the Cancer Society is vitally important. “We’re encouraging people to continue making their donations, because the work that the Cancer Society do is really crucial. “Every minute of the day I know how fortunate I am,” she says. Lizl Matthewson says that teams will still be doing raffles to continue to raise money for the society. “It’s a shame, because the event is a great way to celebrate survivors, but we have to support each other in a different way by keeping each other healthy.” The Tasman District Council announced on Tuesday that their Positive Aging Expo, planned for April 3, has been cancelled. This follows the advice from the Government that public events where 500 or more people are together in one place, at one time, should be cancelled. “This is an event that attracts several thousand people,” Community Partnership Coordinator Lani Evans says. “Given that most attendees fall into the age bracket of those who have been vulnerable to Covid-19 in other countries, the decision to cancel is the most sensible option.”

Snowden’s Bush Trust halfway to target Matt McCrorie Reporter
matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz
The Snowden’s Bush Trust is well over the halfway line in their bid to preserve an important piece of land in Brightwater. The group, formed last year, was created by Brightwater residents to purchase the frontage of Snowden’s bush along Waimea West Road from the Anglican Church and add it to the reserve. Last week, one year since the trust was formed, they reached a milestone, hitting $190,000, over half of their fundraising target of $350,000. Trust member Jerry Cameron says the community support has been ‘heartening.’ “To start things off, the Nelson Diocesan trust agreed to sell the land at $130,000 less than market value, which is great for them to show their support,” Jerry says. Funding has been made up of donations from businesses and grants, as well as private donations. “The donations from the community have been heartening, as well as contributions from businesses like Talley’s, who have just donated $10,000.”
Nick Smith, Anne Turley, Paul Milson, Janice Gibbs, Jerry Cameron, Lorelle Puklowski, Antoinette Besier, Karen Cameron, John Baker, Megan Brown and Tim King gathered to celebrate the Snowden’s Bush Trust hitting their halfway mark. Photo: Matt McCrorie. The trust also partnered with the Tasman District Council, who agreed to contribute $117,000. Mayor of Tasman Tim King says that the progress made so far has been ‘a great effort.’ “This is something that the community wanted, and the council wasn’t in a position to contribute
the total amount, so it’s a testament to the community. If they really want something, they’ll go out and raise the money.” Tim says that community groups like the Snowden’s Bush Trust partnering with the council is essential. “Everything that we do is made
easier if you partner with the community – if people are prepared to gather around and put their own time and effort into fundraising and raising money, then that’s a good sign that it’s something that the community wants.” MP for Nelson Nick Smith is an-
other driving force behind the trust, who says that hitting the halfway mark is “a fantastic tribute to the work of Jerry and the team.” “It’s still going to be a challenge to get to the magic number, but there is strong support from the community.” Nick says that with a lot of new subdivisions going on in Brightwater, it’s all the more important to have public spaces and nature that’s accessible for the Brightwater community. Janice Gibbs, who organised the community meeting that formed the trust, says that it’s incredible to see how far the group has come. “The first meeting we had, everyone wanted us to do this. The community is on board.” While they need to raise the rest of the money by August 1, Jerry says that the members of the trust are optimistic. “We think we’ll definitely get it over the line – there is a lot of work to be done, don’t get me wrong, but we’ve had great community support and we’ve got several significant grants pending. “There are irons in the fire, but we still need everyone’s support to get us over the line”
Scrub fire contained
A scrub fire in Tutaki Valley, near Murchison, was contained by local fire crews last Wednesday, March 11. A spokesperson for Fire and Emergency New Zealand says that a call came in at 1:45pm reporting a bush fire near Mangles Valley Road. Crews from both Murchison and Lake Rotoiti fire stations responded, along with a helicopter. The fire was contained.
Kayaker dies in Ruby Bay
A man pulled from Ruby Bay after his kayak capsized last Thursday has died. Police received reports of a man who was distressed after capsizing at around 1pm, after he was spotted by a member of the public from the shore in Ruby Bay. A police spokesperson says the man was unresponsive when he was pulled from the water, and CPR was administered before he was airlifted by the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter, but was unable to be revived. His death will be referred to the Coroner.
Workplace death near Ngatimoti
A man has died following a workplace incident in Ngatimoti last weekend. A police spokesperson says that an incident happened at around 3:45pm on Sunday 15 March, and despite efforts to revive the man, he died from his injuries. WorkSafe NZ has been advised, as has the coroner and police. WorkSafe opened an investigation into the death on Monday.

Nelmac triumphant in bike challenge Matt McCrorie Nelmac has claimed victory in this year’s Bike Aotearoa challenge, beating out both Nelson City Council and Tasman District Council for the top spot in the region. Lions offer to help those in isolation
Funds needed for underwater ‘bots’
Matt McCrorie
A local underwater robotics programme is seeking funding to continue to teach school children about science, engineering and technology in a “hands-on” way. NZ AquaBots is the first programme of its kind in the country and is run by Ministry of Inspiration - a Nelsonbased charitable trust that reaches over 2000 students annually. The trust is a nominee for this year’s Car Company’s Charity Drive, which sees $10,000 up for grabs for community organisations. Amy Cornelisen from Ministry of Inspiration says it would be “huge” for them to receive some of the money. “Currently, we run at a loss. It’s grown exponentially but with more funding we could impact more students.” Aquabots are remotely operated, tethered, underwater vehicles designed and built by students from a supplied kit, who then form teams to compete in local and national competitions. Amy says they would use the funds to purchase aquabot kits to pass on to students.
As Covid-19 continues to spread, more people are being asked to self-isolate if they believe that they are showing symptoms or have come into contact with anyone who might be positive for the virus. The Richmond Lions club are extending an offer of help to those who might need it in the coming weeks. The government recently announced further travel restrictions, meaning anyone who has travelled to New Zealand from another country is required to self-isolate for 14 days, excluding those travelling from the Pacific Islands. In response to this news, and in an effort to help to community, the Richmond Lions club is offering a delivery service to anyone who may be required to self-isolate. Nigel Jones says the service is for things people need urgently. Nigel says that while many supermarkets offer groceries delivery as a commercial service, people required to self-isolate may need help accessing things like medication from pharmacies, or even books from the library. “Hopefully, most people who have to self-isolate will have family or friends who will deal with it for them – but not everyone does. Not everybody has a support network. “It was something I thought about, and our members wanted to take part in and serve the community.” Nigel says the group is able to deliver to Stoke, Richmond, Brightwater, Wakefield and Mapua. Anyone interested in finding out more should contact Raeowna on 5380467 or Nigel on 0210723035.

titions also does not come cheap at over $2000. Nelson Central School student Moana Williams, 10, has been involved in the programme for the past year and says it has taught her about science and technology “in a fun way”. “I like the building part of it, and things like the underwater maze and going through
hoops.” The Car Company’s Charity Drive launched earlier this month and local organisations are invited to apply until 6 April. Application forms are available at www.carcompanynelson.co.nz or at Car Company branches in Nelson, Richmond and Tahunanui.

When Roelof de Haan first learned his daughter was diagnosed with a rare kidney disease he knew what he had to do. Initially, it was thought that the 14-year-old just had some stomach problems, but then a friend told them to get her blood tested. It was then that they discovered she had nephronophthisis - a genetic disorder of the kidneys which is inherited by the recessive genes from both parents. It was 2008 and, while she was able to go onto dialysis for a time, it was clear that she needed a transplant. That’s when Roelof stepped in. “There are long-term risks to donating a kidney, but you give the gift of life to someone struggling to just get by,” he says. “They don’t tend to last forever but it’s the closest thing to a cure.” But then, after seven good years, his daughter suffered renal failure of the donated kidney while she was at university in Wellington and had to drop out. For the past four years, she has been on dialysis three times a week, which filters and purifies her blood. It helps keep fluids and electrolytes in balance when the kidneys can’t do their job. She is only 26-years-old. However, her story is not unique. There are more than 400,000 New Zealanders
who suffer from kidney disease. The saga of the de Haan family’s struggles with kidney failure came to light on Sunday as part of a barbecue hosted by the Nelson Kidney Support group. Roelof and members of Nelson Kidney Support want to raise awareness about organ donation to those who don’t understand it. The event brought together about 15 people with tales to tell of their struggles with kidney disease and the way it has changed their lives. Founder of the group, Linda Putter, wants the public to know that there is support out there. “When I first came here there was no kidney support,” she says. The group are positive, optimistic and have a good laugh together, despite the difficulties that many of them endure daily. Marie Gill has been on the waiting list for a kidney for ten years. “People aren’t aware,” she says. “For someone to donate organs you have to be in ICU on life-support and declared brain dead, and your family have to agree to contribute your organs.” This is true even if your driver’s licence is marked ‘donor’. “That’s why it’s important for people to have these conversations to say ‘I would like to donate these organs’, before it’s too late,” says Marie. Colourful take on Cinderella coming to Wakefield Matt McCrorie A colourful take on the story of Cinderella is coming to Wakefield next week, thanks to a passionate group of local thespians. The play ‘Kiwifruits’, written by Karl Nixon and Craig Cooper, is described as a hilarious Kiwi take on the Cinderella story. Production manager Deidre Johnson says “The story is told by two drag queens, an older one and a young one. There’s a nice sort of mentorship.” They tell the story of how the Castle Road Tavern, a
classic Kiwi Pub, was saved from financial ruin by being transformed from a working man’s pub to a venue for spectacular drag shows. “It’s a nice story, there’s a lot of music from the 80’s in there, too.” The play, directed by Hugh Neill, is being put on by the Wakefield Country Players. “We’ve been around for 50 years now,” says Deidre. “It’s a community group where everyone just volunteers.” “I think we have a real heart here. It’s not just about churning out plays, it’s about working together and nur-

The coronavirus is a real crisis. Its implications are already impacting on thousands of Nelsonians’ lives and businesses. It is dominating my work as I do everything possible to assist people and help ensure the Government’s response protects people’s health, businesses and jobs. Managing this sort of crisis is not easy for Governments. I have been in the Cabinet room through the Global Financial Crisis, the Christchurch earthquakes, the Pike River Mining Disaster and the Kaikoura earthquake. Decisions have to be made with imperfect information. The situation can change rapidly. It is so crucial to public trust in such crises that Government is open,
timely and straight with information. The situation should not be exaggerated or minimised but told as it is. This includes being honest about uncertainties. The Government’s response to such a crisis needs to be consistent and build public confidence. The temptation to react to the daily demands of the news cycle risks a reactionary approach that flips wildly and lacks strategic direction. I do not think the Government realised the severity of this developing crisis in January and February. We were behind the US, UK and Australia in screening flights and in issuing official advisories on travel to coronavirus hot spots. We were too
slow in applying travel restrictions for people from Italy when it was plain the disease was out of control there. A better job has been done on cruise ships. The management of the NZer’s on the Diamond Princess in Japan was spot on. The ban on cruise ship passengers coming ashore here was a bit slow but is now in place. The strongest criticism I have received from Nelson constituents has been from people travelling through our international airports. They were critical that in airports like Taiwan, Hong Kong, Sydney and Singapore, every passenger was questioned and temperature checked, whereas the checks on entering New
turing each other. It’s a really strong community, these shows bring a huge variety of ages and different types of people coming together.” Deidre also says that it’s a great way to get people onto the stage who might not have otherwise had the chance. “There are lots of people who have never done drama before, they have a chance to try it.” Hugh Neill, the director, says that the show will be ‘a lot of fun.’ “This is the second time I’ve directed for the country players,” Hugh says. “I love the culture here. Eve-
rybody really gets stuck in, and they give it 110%.” Hugh says that people will be surprised by the play. “It’s going to be a great, fun night. It’s a twist on the classic fairy story of Cinderella, with a bit of a camp twist to it.” “It’s really a lot of fun, there’s a lot of gags and audience interaction.” The show will be performed on March 27, 28 and April 1, 2, 3, 4, at the Wakefield Village Hall. Doors open at 6:30 pm, with the show starting at 7:30. For bookings call 541 8869 or bookcountryplay ers@gmail.com
Susan Johnson Following its launch last month, the first Nelson/Tasman Climate Forum was held on Saturday, the 14th, at the Headingly Centre in Richmond, attended by around 100 people. Opening with a karakia, this first meeting was to establish the nature of the forum, to build the forum community, and to kickstart the strategic action. Interim co-chair Julian Raine stepped down and was succeeded byTe Wehi Ratana, who has a proven history of environmental causes. “Policy is made by people who turn up and have that engagement with their community,” she said. “and an enthusiastic young person who turns up on a Saturday means a lot to me.” A workshop followed the forum with plans to meet regularly.

Zealand were negligible. We have now flipped at the weekend from having some of the weakest travel restrictions to some of the toughest. My request of Government is to be more strategic and more open, with less yo-yoing and greater consistency. We need straight forward communications and clearer leadership. The economic implications for our region are huge. We need to cease wasteful spending like Shane Jones’ pet fund and put the money into support for businesses and families facing hardship. We should also freeze any new regulations and costs that could put businesses under or cause job losses.
An inspiring group of policy changers
Gates open to the public from 12:00 until 16:30
I am being inundated with constructive ideas on how we in Nelson and Tasman can get through this crisis. I organised the public meeting last month on coronavirus to be supportive and constructive. I am also available to help businesses with particular problems and needs. I see Australians are hoarding toilet paper. Americans are buying more guns. I encourage Nelsonians to respond sensibly and compassionately. We should heed the advice of our health professionals, washing hands regularly and being extra cautious about working or going out when sick. This is a time for Nelsonians to step up our care for each other. Advt.

The sporting clay shoot open day, which is taking place this Sunday, is a chance to promote the new duck shooting season and test fire new Beretta and Benelli shotguns. The event also serves as a way to promote sustainable prac-

Mike says that the event is also a great time to promote using fibre wads rather than plastic. “These fibre wads are great,” Mike says. “For those who might not know, the wads are what hold the pellets in place in the shell. When the gun fires, the wad goes out with the shot.” Usually, Mike says, these wads are plastic.

Registrations close at 9:30am on the day, with the shoot commencing at 10am. The entry fee is $65, or $45 for juniors. For more information call Hunting and Fishing, 548 1840.

Top of the South History Robert Mercer Paton was born in Agra, Bengal, India in 1824. He married Maria Young in September 1847 in Simla, West Bengal, India. Maria had been born in Calcutta, India in 1826. Robert was a captain in the Bengal Horse Artillery at the time. The men of the Bengal Horse Artillery were said to be the pick of those recruited by the East India Company, having excellent physique and a very handsome uniform. Robert retired from the Bengal cavalry and with his family, arrived in Nelson 3 April 1862.
They had travelled from Sydney, Australia, on board the steamer Lord Worsley. The family initially established themselves in Gloucester Street in Nelson before Robert purchased the Beacon Hill property in Hope belonging to Edward Webby. He later purchased more land and by 1870 had added a further 247 acres to the original 653. He and Maria added four more children to their family of six children. As well as the Beacon Hill property, Robert had further land in the Upper Ngatimoti area. A serious fire occurred there in 1870, destroying out-houses, stable and other property. A
few months later the property of about 1000 acres was put up for sale or to be let with a purchasing option. At the same time the 900 acres at Waimea East was also put up for sale. He was still advertising this property in 1871. In August 1872 he had a serious accident at Nelson Port when he made a false step and fell into the hold of the barque William Prowse, landing on a quantity of railway iron. This fall resulted in a shattered arm and severe internal injuries and there was doubt that he would live out the night. Three doctors were in attendance. Contrary to expectations
he survived. Major Paton was well known for his enthusiasm for religious matters, charitable
practices and as a distributor of religious publications. He had very broad views and his services for preaching were available to many communions of which he was not a member. By April 1864 he had established a Young Men’s Bible Class at Hope School. When a new Free Chapel opened at Waimea West in March 1873, Robert conducted the two morning services. From early in 1875 he preached regularly at the Temperance Hall in Bridge Street. In 1895 he petitioned for religious instruction in public schools in the colony. Robert died in 1901 and Maria in 1907. They are buried in the Richmond Cemetery.
What are the qualities of people who have successfully negotiated this further journey? You can recognise such people. They are outward focussed, self-giving, not guarded or self-protective, always looking for ways to give themselves away. They have increased empathy and sympathy because they know deep inside how much it hurts to hurt. It was Carl Jung
who first popularized the phrase “the two halves of life” to describe the two major tasks of any human life. The first half of life is spent building our sense of identity, importance, and security but, often through suffering, failure or a significant loss, you will discover a door into the second half of life with real purpose and identity at a much deeper level. His own experience was through
illness and pain he said “to experience defeat was also to experience victory.” Christianity is the only religion that has a counterintuitive image of God - a naked, bleeding, dying man. Not rational or attractive. He is the image of the invisible God, who participates in the pain of the world and who through his own suffering brought meaning to our suffering not only through his life, but ultimately through his death and resurrection.
Robert Mercer Paton, the namesake of Paton’s road.
Just a thought... Ross Ferguson Richmond Community Church I’ve come to realise that life is far from a linear journey and that life is sooner or later invaded by unwelcome visitors! Surprises, crises, disappointments, tragedies that we didn’t see coming. Just when you think everything is fine, out of the blue, comes a curve ball from nowhere. Completely unexpected! On a global scale - natural disas-
ters, social and political upheaval, terrorist attacks, an erupting volcano or a tiny virus! Or on a personal level - a redundancy, a broken relationship, a cancer diagnosis or a sudden death. How do you cope? Blame God? Blame others? My observation is that no matter what the curve ball, I have been inspired by those who have been on a further journey through unimaginable pain, suffering, failure or loss and have allowed it to transform them.

Rural market proves to be resilient Joe Blakiston
Despite all the negative headlines and apparent headwinds in farming circles, the Tasman Rural Real Estate market has proved very resilient. Traditionally, the Nelson region has a low volume of sales. Lifestyle and horticultural sales tend to dominate the statistics, says Joe Blakiston, however several significant larger sales of rural properties have occurred in recent months. Change of land use is driving many sales in the region . Whether this might be dairy to horticulture, sheep and beef to carbon farming or forestry, or even simply the future expansion of growing urban areas into the hinterland Of most significance have been

Two dairy farms have recently been sold for conversion into hop production to major corporate organisations. This highlights the importance of horticulture to the region. My Farm Investments are developing a 180 hectare property at Kohatu sold late in 2019 for over $8m, while another 245 hectare
dairy farm in Tapawera has sold by PGGW agent Doug Smith for an undisclosed sum, also planned for future hop development Both properties had good water consents and good soils and are both in a favourable area for hop growing. These properties attracted a significant premium over the current dairy farm values . Other larger properties that PGGWrightson have sold recently
include a 247 ha Golden Bay sheep farm with holiday accommodation, a 215 ha grazing / forestry property in Upper Moutere and a unique 60 ha block at Best Island. Peter Evans has some longstanding forestry contacts and is always fielding enquiries for bare land and established forest blocks in the region, as well as dryland farming opportunities. PGGW agents report a steady level of
buyer enquiry and even with the dry conditions they are seeing plenty of interest in new property to the market. “Traditionally only 10 to 12 farms over 50 hectares are sold each year in the Tasman market and PGGWrightson is fortunate to have transacted a large number of these in recent years, so we feel able to comment on th strength of the market” says Joe Blakiston. The outlook is still good with Tasman being a desirable area where people look to come and live for reasons other than farming pursuits, which does add to the interest in farms. Interest rates are at historic lows and despite some market price uncertainties with the worldwide virus effects, the outlook is positive for rural real estate sales as we head into autumn.
Mahana School fundraiser a success Mahana School held its main fundraiser on Saturday 14th March hosting a Twilight Fiesta. The stunning early evening
weather supported a great lineup of music including Morgan and Nigel Grove -Roberts, Zac Griffths, and the award-winning
Medicine Woman who are regulars at this event. , Kids were not left out either as they slid down the water slide
tower, reached for the sky on bouncy castles and bumped along on tractor rides. The local Rural Fire Service had
a unit on site and their very realistic simulator to get an understanding of how to stay low in the dark.

Building
Building and renovating can refer to making something new, or bringing something back to life. When building new or renovating your existing home, we understand that it can be hard to know where to begin. Working with the experienced team at Colourplus Richmond will ensure you achieve results you’ll love for many years to come. Offering a comprehensive design service, Trish and the team will work with you through the many options available to help you select paint colours, wallpapers, fabrics and blinds that reflect your style and budget, and they can work from plans if your new home is still a while away. Even if you are renovating room by room as your budget allows, think of your home as a whole, and make sure there is flow between spaces old and new by using a complimentary colour palette. Consider the architectural style of the house, lighting, size, properties and functions of a room when
considering colours and finishes. A small room will not necessarily feel larger just by painting it a light colour; natural light and ceiling height also play an important part. The Award-winning team at Colourplus Richmond bring you the very best in interior and exterior decorating and design. It’s the total package of colour, texture and range on offer that makes Colourplus Richmond the only place to consider when building or renovating. Owned by John and Trish Gray, Colourplus Richmond provides you with the convenience of free parking and a modern showroom incorporating large areas for customers to discuss colour and design with trained professionals. Whether you are building a new home or redecorating, they can help you. No appointments are necessary, so visit the store and see how they can help you achieve the goals you have set for your home.

Still swinging at 88 Susan Johnson Last week at his golf club Barry Reade scored an 86, two strokes under his age of 88 years. In recent history of the Greenacres Golf Club no one has achieved this. Peter Crins, club president, believes Barry deserves all the accolades for achieving this feat. “Barry has been such a loyal
club member that it is great to see him past this milestone as I’m sure it has been on his sporting bucket list for some time. Excellent work, Barry,” he says. There are a few people around the country who manage this feat on a regular basis. Normally these are golfers who are on a very low handicap and, as they get older, can continue to shoot low rounds
of golf in less strokes than their age in years. Barry, who plays golf twice a week, is a long-standing member of the club and has been playing for 43 years since giving up cricket for a gentler game. “When I gave up playing cricket friends encouraged me to take up golf,” he says. “I enjoy it for the exercise and the company.”
Barry Reade took up golf when he stopped playing cricket 43 years ago.

Burson blasts around speedway Jody Scott
Speedway Reporter
Tasman’s Ian Burson’s tilt at the New Zealand title in Christchurch a few weeks ago ended in spectacular fashion on the second night after being squeezed up and over in a body-bruising roll that left him in hospital for several days. While nothing was broken the impact jarred his body so much that he still felt it on his return to the track at Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway on Saturday. The team had rebuilt the car after bars were bent and panels left in pieces following the crash. The return of the Super Saloons to prop up a “club night” of racing for the Autobatt Nelson King of the Clay was also a feature. Any thoughts that Burson would take it easy were quickly dispelled as he broke the lap record twice while picking up a clean sweep of wins. He heads south this week to defend the Daryl Ainsley

The T.Q’s continue their upward surge and the usual culprits were contesting the pointy end of the racing, Jayden Corkill pounced on the restart in the feature race to take the win after a wild ride from visiting Greymouth competitor Rodney Thompson. He launched off the rear wheel of Alicia Hill and almost had a peek over the top
of the fence before coming back down with a thud. The ministocks had a few visitors but it was Callum Russ who got the spoils. He is finding form towards the business end of the season after some advice from grandfather Malcolm Russ. Jacob Skurr bagged his first career race win. The productions ran the return teams’ race against the Blenheim cars and although
they didn’t win the race, they had enough finishing points and the lead from the first meeting to win the trophy. Keightley Teece took out the stock car crown with two wins, while the club champs for street stocks was won by KC Rose. The sprint cars return at the next meeting depending on what restrictions may be enforced for Coronavirus.

home in the 17th over. In a match where economy would prove to be crucial, it was surprising to see Will Julian, a promising young player with the team’s best economy rate (4.63) not being used, while older players with much inferior rates (8.42, 7.35 and 6.71) were used, conceding both runs and extras. The premier team batted first also and made 130 for nine, with Hayden Ingham leading the way with 47, then backing that up with a good bowling performance, taking three wickets
for 20 off his four overs and deservedly winning the most valuable player award in a losing team. Three promising young players contributed well. Logan Ogilivie performing well with the ball taking two for 32 off his four and, when batting, Boe Bamford (26) and Jackson Harris (20) aided the cause again. A positive sign in a weak team performance. Next week Taylors Wanderers rugby team will play Renwick in Blenheim and the cricket teams will be at Marsden Rec against Stoke Nayland.

adventurous Wanderers backline to run with some verve and freedom. Off a solid scrum on halfway, Cameron King and Sione Ma’u created space on the right flank and quick recycled ball was provided for the backline against a rather disorganized Nelson defence. El Nino Peniamina strolled over for Taylors Wanderers’ first try of the day, converted by Barr, and a lead of 10-7. El Nino was over again 10 minutes later from a similar buildup following another scrum, this time breaking on an arc and having too much pace for the defence. At this stage Wanderers were unfortunate to lose both wingers through separate injuries and replacements players Stace Forbes and Levi MacPherson were asked to play out of position for the remainder of the match. Halftime arrived with no change to the 15-7 score, but Fletcher Matthews made a strong run on the left hand side of the field before be-
ing brought to the ground.. The ball was recycled quickly and delivered to de Kock and Sean King who provided rapid ball to Barr where an accurate cross field kick was regathered by Forbes and released to Tone Vaka who went over for another excellent team try. At 7-20 Wanderers were in control. A further penalty to Barr took the score out to 23-7 before some ill-discipline by Nelson resulted in referee Kane Hames issuing two yellow cards, one for a blatant obstruction after a kick ahead by Forbes, then a dangerous tackle on Tone Vaka. Wanderers were able to exploit this numeric advantage and Fletcher Matthews and Levi Mac Pherson both scored tries to take the score to 37-7 before Nelson had the final say when back to the full complement with a last minute try and a final scoreline of 37-14 in favour of Taylors Wanderers. Coach Glenn Grant was pleased with the team performance, especially the effort shown when hard on defence.

Taylor’s Wanderers started their 2020 senior rugby campaign with a 37-14 win over Nelson at Neale Park on Saturday. After only being able to play one warm-up match in preparation, Wanderers were concerned that they may be a little underdone, but they actually dictated the pace of the game throughout. The early exchanges saw Wanderers straight on to attack and a penalty by Justin Barr was good reward for the pressure that had been created. However, Nelson soon exerted some pressure also and swept down the field. Following a series of penalties inside the Wanderers 22 and a rather disjointed attack, Nelson were able to cross for the opening try, which was converted for a 7-3 lead. The Blue and Gold forwards, expertly led by Gabba de Kock with Sean King and Chris Halaufia in the vanguard, carried the ball well on attack and threw everything at Nelson on defence, thereby enabling an

Tasman District Council’s Draft Schedule of Fees and Charges 2020/2021 www.waimeawater.nz
Tasman District Council has approved the Draft Schedule of Fees and Charges for public consultation. The Draft Schedule covers the year from 1 July 2020 to 30 June 2021.
Submissions may be made online at tasman.govt.nz/feedback or delivered to your local Tasman District Council office.
The current bridge has no safety barriers and no safe space for pedestrians or cyclists. At just six metres wide, it’s too narrow and unsuitable for heavy vehicles. Given its age (it was constructed in the 1920s), it will be removed completely and replaced with a new ten metre wide bridge with safety barriers, making it better and safer for all users. To carry out this work, this section of the Moutere Highway will have to be closed for up to ten weeks, between Monday 30 March and Friday 5 June 2020. There is no room for a temporary bridge on this site so detours will be in place.
We appreciate it’ll be disruptive and inconvenient while the road is closed but the bridge does need to be replaced. Thanks for your patience as we work to get the project done quickly and safely.
Limits Bylaw 2016 Review Consultation We are asking for feedback on some proposed new speed limits.
To register for the event or tell us your • Gibbs Valley Road – current limit is 100kmph, proposed you’d like to hear about, please email info@waimeawater.nz Please email info@waimeawater.nz to register, submit questions or topics to change to 60kmph by Friday 27 March 2020.
At the end of March, work will start to replace Mission Bridge on the Moutere (Inland) Highway. The bridge is located near where Davey Road meets the Moutere Highway, just past the Gardiner Valley Road intersection as you head towards Motueka.
More information about the Harbourmaster’s directions for events is available at tasman.govt.nz/link/maritime-events.

Submissions are invited on the Draft Schedule of Fees and Charges 2020/2021, and must be received by 5.00 pm on Friday 17 April.
Please check your water restrictions At the time of printing, Phase B restrictions are in place for Eighty-Eight Valley and the Dovedale public water supply. This means you can’t fill or top up pools or water the lawn. You can still water the veggie garden but non-productive gardens must only be watered by hand every second day. If your address is an even number, water on even numbered days and likewise for odd days. Phase A restrictions are in place in Richmond, Hope, Brightwater, Redwood Valley, Māpua/Ruby Bay, Wakefield and Tapawera. That means residents are not permitted to fill swimming pools, but they can be topped up. Watering grass and lawns is not allowed but as long as you use a hand-held hose you can still water your plants and veggie gardens and wash cars if it’s really needed. Various restrictions are also in place for water permit holders around the district. If any restrictions apply to you, we will have sent you a message letting you know what your current restrictions are. However, the situation can change quickly if we receive rain, so please check the website for the most up to date information, tasman.govt.nz/link/water-restrictions.
• Hoddy Road – current limit is 100kmph, proposed to change to 40kmph • Wharariki Road (Freeman Access to western end) – current limit is 100kmph, proposed to change to 60kmph We are also proposing to extend an existing 50kmph speed limit on Abel Tasman Drive in Pōhara 25m to tie in better with the new shared path location and increased activity by the café. Get all the details at your nearest Council office or library or on the website, tasman.govt.nz/feedback. Submissions are invited until 4.00 pm on Monday 30 March 2020.
What do you love about your local parks? Consultation closes 31 March 2020. We’re reviewing the way we manage Moutere/Waimea Ward parks and reserves, and we need your help to make sure these public spaces suit locals and visitors now and in the future. Tell us which reserves you use regularly, what you love about them, and any changes you would like to see to the way they are used or managed. The most important thing we want to know is: What’s your vision for their future? Have your say: Visit tasman.govt.nz/feedback for more information.
