New school leaver programme announced The new owner of Nelson Forests OneFortyOne (OFO) has marked the settlement of its purchase with the announcement of two significant new initiatives – the establishment of a substantial fund for sedimentation research and a school leaver programme that will provide trade apprenticeships at Nelson Forests’ Kaituna Sawmill near Blenheim. Nelson Forests has committed $500,000 to its new sedimentation research fund and has already engaged with researchers at Cawthron Institute and Landcare Research, although it expects to develop collaborations with researchers at other organisations over time. Lees Seymour, Managing Director of Nelson Management Ltd, the management company for Nelson Forests, says that sedimentation research will take place in Marlborough and Nelson Tasman and will build on work that the company has already done on the issue of sedimentation. “We realise that there is a high level of interest in forestry’s role in sedimentation and that our community is looking to us to proactively address this issue. Research is crucial and will help us prevent, manage, and mitigate sedimentation.” Tim King, chair of the Tasman District Council Environment and Planning Committee, strongly supported the company for establishing the new fund. “It is excellent to see Nelson Forests engaging

I think people just need to be careful about what they are doing and need to be aware of the fact that it’s out there.

It is something we are definitely aware of, especially in the future with our two little ones.

I believe people need to have common sense with the internet and people need to sit down and talk to their families about what’s out there and how to be careful.

It is terrible that this happens, and the people who are doing it need to stop being so terrible.

New school leaver programme FROM PAGE 1 with researchers and the community on the issue of sedimentation. This is exactly the kind of thing we want to see from forestry companies.” Starting from next year, Nelson Forests expects to offer up to four trade apprenticeships at one time at its Kaituna Sawmill, in a diverse range of vocations including fitter turner, electrician, saw doctor, timber processor, boiler operator, and timber machinist. The new Nelson Forests initiatives were announced at two special functions in Nelson and Blenheim held to celebrate the settlement of OFO’s purchase. OFO’s chair, John Gilleland, and CEO Linda Sewell were among those present. “We are delighted to mark the settlement day in this way,” says OFO Chief Executive Linda Sewell. “Nelson Forests has a strong reputation for environmental stewardship and encouraging young people into forestry and these new initiatives support the company’s existing values. Those values are also very important to OFO and we look forward to continuing to contribute to the Marlborough and Nelson Tasman communities.”

Big win for local fishing lodge Luxury fishing accommodation Owen River Lodge has scooped a major gong at the 2018 New Zealand Tourism Awards. The Westpac Business Excellence Award, open to New Zealand tourist operators with less than $6m annual turnover, was presented to owner Felix Borenstein at a black-tie dinner in Christchurch on Thursday, September 6. “I’m incredibly grateful and taken aback,” said Mr Borenstein. “I thought there was some super-stiff competition and I honestly didn’t think we were going to win.” He acknowledged and thanked his staff, saying, “I might lead them but it is the team that actually did the winning, not me.” Although other fishing lodges have previously made the finals, Owen River Lodge is the first to win at the awards and was the only Top of the South business to be shortlisted this year. The judges say Owen River Lodge is a brilliant example of a luxury business delivering an exceptional customer experience. “It is a role model for tourism businesses everywhere and demonstrates the benefits of high value tourism to a small community.” Over 400 industry professionals and guests attended the gala dinner held at Christchurch’s Air Force Museum, including tourism minister Kelvin Davis and Air New Zealand CEO Christopher Luxon. The Supreme Tourism Award was won by recreation vehicle business, Tourism Holdings Ltd.

Rough start to gypsy lifestyle Emily Beaumont Reporter

emily@waimeaweekly.co.nz

For twenty years Jewels McKenna yearned for the gypsy lifestyle, and finally that dream was becoming a reality with the recent purchase of her house-truck and plans to join the Original Gypsy Fair in the North Island this week. But Jewels was dealt a bitter blow on Friday, September 14, when an intruder entered her house-truck while parked in Richmond’s Petrie carpark at 1.50pm. The male offender entered the truck from the front

and attempted to steal belongings, while Jewels was inside at the rear. “I think the guy expected a peace-loving hippy, instead he got a furious gypsy woman who’s dealt with 600-800kg horses for just about every day of her life,” says Jewels. Managing to “drag” the offender from her truck and reclaim her belongings, Jewels was assisted by members of the public in detaining the man until police arrived. Police arrested the man, charging him with theft ex car. He appeared in Nelson District Court on Monday,

September 17, where police opposed bail. It’s of little compensation for Jewels, though, who was left shaken from the incident and forced to delay plans. “The shock has now worn off and the reality of the seriousness has kicked in. He’s really put a damper on the way I feel about travelling now.” But travel she will, and Jewels says despite the setback she’s looking forward to joining like-minded travelling folk on the fair that was established in 1990. “I’m not going to let one idiot put me off.”

Be wary of kitchen fires With a notable increase in cooking-related fires in our area lately, local brigades are reminding everyone to ‘keep looking when you’re cooking’. If you have a fire in your kitchen, turn the power off to the cooker if it’s safe to do so. Never attempt to extinguish an oil fire with water, the two do not mix well when on fire. Place a lid or wooden chopping board over the pot carefully if safe to do so, be mindful of

and possums are devastating our native species killing nationally 25 million native birds and chicks each year. Organisations like DOC, Project Janzoon, Brook Waimarama Sanctuary and over a dozen voluntary groups across the region are leading the fightback. Nobody likes poisons or killing animals but this work is crucial to securing the survival of our native birds. Trapping is used where it is practical but the bulk of pest control is done with 1080. It is efficient, safe and effective. 1080 naturally breaks down quickly. Thousands of water tests from 1080 op-

50% in the last decade and a new population has been established in Nelson in the Gouland Downs. I commend Eugenie Sage, the new Conservation Minister, on further expanding this pest control work in this year’s budget. The anti poison brigade have become threatening and ugly. I previously had death threats and last year had poison thrown and rubbed on me. Helicopters have been tampered with and road spikes placed near operations. DOC vehicles have had their tyres slashed. The recent protest at the Nelson Market had them chanting that “DOC are terrorists”.

They left dead native birds on Parliament’s steps last week claiming they were poisoned. Experts said they were bludgeoned to death. It was disappointing that Greens Co-leader Marama Davidson and NZ First sided with the protestors rather than DOC and the science. The anti-1080 brigade has not produced any facts to back up their hysterical claims. It is time for them to put up or shut up. We need to back practical, science based conservation so as to ensure our children and their children get to enjoy the native species that make New Zealand so special. Advt.

Local firefighters were kept busy over the last weekend, attending two blazes. On Friday, September 14, at 7.26pm, crews were called to an inferno in an agricultural shed on the Moutere Highway near the Appleby School. With a lack of water available on the rural property, tankers from Mapua, Brightwater, Appleby and Motueka were used to ferry water to the site. “With agricultural sheds there’s generally chemicals stored inside, but fortunately in this case there weren’t a lot,” says Richmond fire chief Craig Piner. Four fire trucks and crews fought the fire that “totally gutted and totally destroyed” the 1500 square metre shed, with many of the crews there for six hours. Craig says the fire was started by a fault with a tractor. On Sunday, September 16, Richmond firefighters were called to a house fire on Waverley Street. The occupants, a mother and child, were woken by smoke alarms at 8.50pm, which effectively saved their lives, says Craig. “It’s another classic example of how important working smoke alarms are. There’s no doubt we could be looking at a different scenario had they not had the smoke alarms,” says Craig. Before crews arrived, the mother re-entered the house to successfully rescue their dog, and suffered from smoke inhalation which resulted in hospitalisation.

Cancer Society raises record amount The Nelson Cancer Society has raised a record amount at this year’s Daffodil day. The 28th annual Daffodil Day on Friday, August 31, raised an impressive $115,000 from donations

across the region which will go towards supporting those affected by cancer. Volunteers lined the streets selling bunches of daffodils that were hand-picked from around the region and daffodil pins. Nelson Cancer Society manager Michelle Hunt is thrilled with the outcome and says the funds will be invaluable to the region and will be spent locally. She says the funds will go towards the annual costs of 150 free counselling sessions, 90 financial support grants and 95 support groups that are held in Nelson, Motueka and Golden Bay.

Rise of Facebook crime worries police Facebook crime in the region is on the rise with more people being scammed from the social media network as it morphs into a trading platform. New Zealand police supervisor of cybercrime investigations, detective sergeant Damian Rapra-Davies, says that the variables with a platform like Facebook are not well-documented so it’s hard to progress a case. “Often people think it’s as simple as reporting it to the police and they get their money back, but it’s what we can prove, not what we know.” He says that, naturally,

Nelson Matters Conservation Week is an opportunity to champion the great work done by DOC and local voluntary groups in protecting nature in our region but also to debunk some of the critics of 1080. We are so blessed with the beauty and diversity of our conservation areas at Nelson’s doorstep - sheltered bays like those in the Marlborough Sounds, stunning alpine scenery in Nelson Lakes, golden beaches in the Abel Tasman and marble mountains in Kahurangi National Park. The scenery is stunning but all is not well with our wildlife. Introduced predators like stoats, rats

Keep your oven and cookers clean to decrease the risk of fires, don’t forget to clean your rangehood filters regularly, most are able to be cleaned in the dishwasher. Remember, if in doubt, get out! Network Tasman’s Discount is on its way Is it time whitebait were protected by prohibiting their sale by recreational fishermen?

Call for protection of whitebait T Timpson As another season gets underway, the state of our native (whitebait) fishery has been making the headlines and sometimes for the wrong reasons. Although I don’t have a degree on the subject, I like to think, after 25 years of catching this white gold, I have some insight on the state of our local whitebait fishery. Very basically, they first have to survive the egg-laying and hatching process, they swim, AVAILABLE NOW but are mostly washed out to sea in floods, then grow and before long they are the AVAILABLENOW NOW AVAILABLE perfect food for all manner paVers Bark of other fish. Then in spring they decide it’s time to hit the rivers. They enter to be met by `us’ (the eager fisherman) all after the elusive `feed’. ed by fish and birds for their entire journey. They find some side creek, water race, swamp etc. and here they can finally call home. They hide and try to grow to maturity, so hopefully they can repeat the whole cycle. But the `new age’ whitebait have university graduates on their side. Their findings seem to be taken on board as gospel by our decision makers and soon we have new regulations introduced. While any information they gather that aids whitebait is great, perhaps more information could be gleaned from those whom have spent years watching, catching and learning their habits. There is one very easy way to help increase the whitebait stocks in New Zealand rivers. Introduce a ban on the sale of whitebait by `recreational fisherman’. That statement is going to make me extremely unpopular, as there are a lot of people out there, including some of my friends, who

use the whitebait season as a chance to make extra money. I would rather see a sale ban than catch limits or total fishing bans. Whitebait should only be sold by those who own registered stands. (And `no’ I don’t own a stand). A lot of stands in many cases are not cheap to buy - depending on location, and they all have to pay levies every year to keep their stands and hence should have the privilege of being able to sell their catch. New stand sites are no longer created, with only a limited number of existing registered stands in New Zealand. If you want to sell and make money from whitebait then you should have to buy, lease or rent one of these stands. There is no difference between the whitebait or any other recreational fishery in New Zealand. By making the sale of whitebait illegal for recreational fisherman, it would prevent all the greed and animosity that is generated on the river banks

around New Zealand during the catch season. This would secure the future of literally tons of whitebait and people would only then catch what is required for family and friends. Yes, there will be a black market – it would be no different to any other black market fishery that is out there today. Authorities have to put faith in the knowledge that the majority of New Zealand fishermen will abide by the rules - as they do now, with any other fishery. What is so difficult about introducing a `no sell’ law? It is illegal for recreational fisherman to sell all other fish species in New Zealand - so why is whitebait so different? The landowners and authorities are doing their bit, now it’s time for the fishermen to do theirs. New Zealand whitebait stocks would benefit and increase if we make it illegal to sell our recreationally caught `White Gold’.

Hospice edge closer to fund-raising goal Sara Hollyman Nelson Tasman Hospice is 315,000 steps closer to their fund-raising goal after two generous donations, one from Pub Charity and the other from A Steampunk Fantasy evening. Pamela White is one of the five women who organised the Steampunk Fantasy evening which managed to raise $44,000 from the 230 people who attended, and says the night was a huge success. “There was just a great bunch of happy people who had a really fun night raising money for a great cause.” She says the five women who pulled the event together are really proud of their efforts and had a great time and plenty of

laughs during it. “Lots of imagination went into the costumes, the food was outstanding, it was just a great night, really.” Nelson Tasman Hospice needed to raise $11.5 million to complete the project and thanks to the latest grant has just $1 million to go. Hospice fund-raising and marketing manager Paul McIntyre says they “couldn’t do without” the support of these charities and events. “We couldn’t build this amazing new facility without the support of grant bodies, the communities of Nelson Tasman, local businesses and other groups. “I think people will see now that we are on the home stretch and I’m confident we’ll get across the line.” Pub Charity chief executive Martin Cheer says the charity works with its partner hospitality venues in Nelson, Richmond and Motueka to raise funds for the local

community. “In particular, those organisations looking to support the most vulnerable. “We are pleased to continue our support of such a critical community service to the people of the Nelson and Tasman districts.” The hospice delivers a free service and cares for over 160 patients at any one time, with numbers increasing every year. The new building is now closed in and Gibbons project manager Sean Gardner says 80 per cent of the cladding is completed. He says the insulation is starting to be installed but it will take a while to cover the entire 2388 square metre building. If you want to keep upto-date with progress, like and follow the hospice on Facebook: Facebook.com/NelsonTasmanHospice/ How to donate: www.nelsonhospice.org. nz/donate for all credit card donations.

The children at Richmond School were in awe of popular Kiwi magician and ventriloquist, Elgregoe, on Tuesday, September 11. The children were engrossed by Elgregoe’s live magic show complete not only with tricks and illusions, but accompanied by positive and educational anti-bullying messages. Elgregoe and his posse made up of parrots, puppets and Seymour the problem-solving Dinosaur are on a nation-wide tour supported by Trustpower. “Every time I step onto a school stage I say to myself: ‘this one is for them’. I want to take them on a journey, to give them that sense

of wonder I felt when I first saw a magician and, more importantly, share life skill messages that make a difference,” says Elgregoe. The show focuses on creating good attitudes and a bully-free environment through giving children a ‘high five’. The ‘high five’ being five great values that help students make a difference: respect, responsible, caring, helpfulness and trustworthy. This theme complements the messages of positive behaviour that schools are already giving to their students, making Elgregoe’s show a part of the solution to bullying and helping them to shape caring school communities. “I want school to be a positive experience for them and give them the skills to have a bully-free day, because that’s the real magic,” says Elgregoe.

A lifelong love affair with history

Storm Nathan, a library assistant at Motueka Library, has had a lifelong love affair with history. She will be giving a talk at the Richmond Library about the experiences of pioneering Tasman women in the 1850’s. “I love history,” she says, “anything to do with history – ours, theirs, ancient, contemporary. As a child, anything old used to draw me in. My family’s old photographs and letters from World War I made me feel lovely and passionate.” Collections Librarian Ruth Lawley says, “Storm’s talk about the experiences of Tasman women in the 1850s is part of our Suffrage 125 celebrations. Dear Editor September 11, my husband and I went to Motueka to have lunch with our son and daughter-in-law for his birthday. While we were away our beautiful fur-baby was run over right out-side our house in Hollybush Drive, Brightwater by a “somebody” who didn’t have enough decency to stop and find out where she lived or who the owners were. She was killed instantly with massive head injuries and was left there for our poor neighbours to pick up so they can’t say they didn’t know they had hit something. Our street is a “through” street for a new sub-division in Brightwater and some of the traffic up and down here do not seem to realise that there are children who play on their front lawns and, at times, on the road. We know the speed limit is 50km but it’s far too fast for a residential area when we have to reduce speed to 40

past schools. My husband and I are in our 70’s and Sophie, all of 2 years old, gave us so much pleasure and love and now we have had that taken away from us by a, may I say, gutless person who couldn’t even face us.... that is all we asked. I have made some beautiful friends that share my passions. Dancing, acting and singing for me, is a complete joy and utter adrenaline rush, it’s something I really love.”

Richmond’s Alex Jensen and Seth Blackburn play Sandy and Danny (Alex is also choreographing the show along with Aimee) and they are excited to be performing the show at the Theatre Royal. Aimee promises audiences will have a fun night and says, “Grease is jam-packed with hit songs and upbeat dancing, but still captures

Henk Lups is Nelson Hospital’s new chaplain. Photo: Charles Anderson.

New hospital chaplain lives ‘life’s journey’ Henk Lups works at the sharp edges of the human experience. As the new Nelson Hospital chaplain, he and his team of 20 volunteers offer emotional and spiritual care, for all patients, all staff and their families. “Faith or non-faith, religion or non-religion, it doesn’t matter,” he says. Henk says he is in the role now because of “life’s journey” – one that took him from being the head of a hospitality school in Christchurch, to Cambodia where he suffered an accident that forced him back to New Zealand, and to his home being red-zoned during the earthquakes. Then he and his wife moved to Nelson. “We had to start again, no job, no nothing. You get more resilient, a better sense of who you are and what you can cope with.” Henk trained in clinical pastoral education and during that time he

felt pulled towards the health sector. “We share in people’s sadness but also celebrate the wins and everything in between,” he says. “It is quite a magical place, a hospital.” There are about 150 in-patients in Nelson Hospital every day. “So, every day is different, every encounter and conversation is different,” Henk says. “And that makes it fascinating but also very meaningful. It’s the sharp edges of people’s lives. Sometimes it is demanding but other times encouraging and uplifting.” Henk says, even though he is a chaplain, most often when he talks with people at the hospital Christianity is not even mentioned. “It is about what are people wanting to share and who is there to listen and encourage. “We are there often for one of the most significant moments of people’s lives. It is a privilege.”

SAT 22 SEPT - 10am-2pm The popular, annual Hope School Country Fair this coming Saturday, (September 22nd), is expecting once again to draw large crowds. There’s something for everyone - pony rides, bouncy castles and cute farm animals, a bumper selection of homemade preserves and lots of lovely fresh produce and baking. On the plant stall, there will be heaps of bare-rooted fruit trees, strawberries, veggie seedlings, cacti and succulents, tree lucernes, natives, bedding plants

and shrubs. There’s a fabulous list of items in the Silent Auction, including double tickets to various Nelson Arts Festival events, such as the eclectic band ‘The Eastern,’ or contemporary circus performance ‘Driftwood’. For those planning a break, there is a Hanmer holiday package, plus accommodation at the Golden Bay Hideaway. There are tickets for the New Zealand Cider Festival, ‘The Nutcracker’ ballet by the Royal New Zealand Ballet, Ladies Night with Karen

Walker, and events from Dr Libby and Dr Julie Boshdale. Other experiences include canyoning and a tour of Weta Workshop. The Hope School Cafe and Hot Food Tent will be up and running to sustain you throughout the day, plus there will be homemade lemonade, ginger beer and local apple juice to enjoy. The coordinator, Sarah Whittle, is looking forward to it, whatever the weather. “This year we have some exciting new activities; visitors can have a sweepstake

on the time it takes Homing Pigeons to return to Aniseed Valley; there’s Laser Tag, and Morley Motorcycles have generously enabled us to have a quad bike and sled to tow people around the field opposite the school. A big focus for our 2018 fair is on trying to reduce our waste, so we are asking visitors to bring shopping bags and cups. We will have reusable coffee/tea cups on loan for a $5 refundable bond; there will be homemade produce bags and beeswax wraps for sale, and we have recycling

bins supplied by Waste Management. Ultimately, the fair wouldn’t be possible without our strong community and the support of local businesses – we are really grateful to everyone who has helped put this together.” Be sure to mark September 22nd in your diary for the Hope School Country Fair, at 316 Paton Road, Hope. Eftpos available, and there is a parking field on Paton Road. BYO cups and bags. Selling starts at 10am through to 2pm, whatever the weather. See you there!

Celebrating a Milestone

Milestone Homes has adopted a smarter approach to new home building in the Nelson Bays area since opening for business in 2007. The Richmond-based company was founded by Director Simon Collett, who saw po-

tential in combining highquality construction with a high level of service that didn’t compromise on quality, all the while sticking to a tight budget. Nationally, Milestone Homes has been delivering quality, afforda-

ble homes to New Zealanders for fifteen years. Their proven and purpose-designed homes offer a smart choice for New Zealanders who want a home designed with smarter thinking, delivered at a very smart price.

Milestone Homes Nelson Bays pride themselves on providing not only a fantastic home but also a fantastic experience to all who choose to build with them. Communication through each stage, from planning and pricing through to consent and then construction, is of utmost priority to ensure everything runs smoothly. This commitment is rewarded when clients come back for another build with a number of people coming back to build another Milestone – some have built more than four homes. Regional Manager Adam Hills has been with the business since its inception and has seen the company’s growth firsthand. He joined the Milestone Home Team as a New Home Consultant with little knowledge of the building industry, but his strong desire and passion to learn all aspects of the business propelled him in to his role as General Manager. The Milestone Homes brand offers a smart and simple way of constructing a home, compared with other residential housing companies’ complex design and build process. The teams’ current show home located on Berryfield Drive, Richmond. Open: Monday – Sunday, 1pm – 4pm. for those building, which they hold at the forefront when making decisions regarding the business. “We are very lucky to have such a passionate and committed team behind us, ensuring that our clients are looked after and the houses built are up to their high

standards,” says Adam. The team vision is proudly on display in their office. “A vibrant team of people who are committed to delivering quality and true value.” Adam says, by having this on display it ensures that everyone lives by the vision and keeps it at

the forefront of their mind. Adam is very proud of the progress Milestone Homes Nelson Bays has made over the years. “It is a real privilege to have provided this many homes (nearly 250 at the last count) for Nelsonians,” says Adam. “We are extremely fortunate to be able to contribute to the smart growth of the district with homes that will be loved by our locals for generations.” The business has changed unrecognisably over the last 11 years and has grown from a small team of two to seven. The sales team is made up of three New Home Consultants – Debra, Mark and James – who all have a passion for the building industry and helping people into their new homes. Debra has been with the company for over four years and last year won a number of national awards including New Home Consultant of the Year. Both James and Mark recently joined the team and are loving being part of the team and handing over homes to happy clients! Adam says, “the best part of the job is going along to the handovers and seeing our clients in their new home. I get such a buzz from see-

ing someone’s dream home come to life and it’s such a privilege that they trusted us with their biggest purchasing decision.” Construction Manager Hamish Griffith is a qualified builder and former apprentice of the year. He has a great eye for detail and prides himself on the quality of the homes built. Supporting Hamish in the role of client liaison is Antoinette, who is the day-to-day contact for clients, she ensures they are fully informed about the process of their builds. Sarah is the accounts and administration manager and is often referred to as the most important person in the office (she pays the wages)! Milestone Homes’ proven house designs have been created by an in-house draughting and estimating team, with careful thought put into every single aspect of each home design, so that the homes are affordable, comfortable, durable, and practical. Each home is built using only topquality products from reputable New Zealand suppliers, made to withstand New Zealand conditions. “Our standardised designs

Zealand’s “largest, one-of-a-kind, virtual subdivision, ‘Milestown’. “We can show you in real time how your new home could look and feel, and give you a true sense of the space both inside and out. In a matter of minutes, you can customise your options, change wall colours, facades and cladding until you can SEE a smarter plan for your new home”, says Adam. The Nelson Bays franchise has won a number of national awards including ‘Franchisee of the Year’ for five out of the last six years, as well as the Supreme Franchisee Award in 2016 which is great recognition for the hard work that the team

puts into everything that they do. In turn, the local team have built a strong reputation within the community, for both their smart designs and service and strong community involvement. Both Simon and Adam are a part of the national Management Team which gives them active involvement in the direction of the brand and allows them to help drive the vision forward. Adam says, “a lot of the plan development and specifications are set at these meetings and it ensures that Milestone is at the forefront of the industry and making sure we continue to be Smarter.”

Aside from this, Adam was recently voted onto the executive board of the Nelson branch of the Registered Master Builders Association. The franchise is a strong supporter of a number of community initiatives including the ‘Milestone Homes Top of The South Speedway’ which, Adam says, “is an amazing sport in our region, and although they have a few challenges to overcome, it is a fantastic community sporting event and we’re proud to be involved with the speedway fraternity.” They also run their annual ‘Make a Difference’ Christmas appeal which revolves around a gifting tree, where people can buy and donate gift for those less fortunate. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the 2018 Make a Difference Appeal and annual Big Give! They were also a founding sponsor of the No Child Left Inside programme which is aimed at teaching primary-aged children the basic techniques and skills to

be more active and give them the confidence to enjoy sport. Milestone Homes Nelson Bays has consistently been in the top three for preferred builders in the region over the last few years. This year they are on track for their biggest year to date by building 50 homes. “We offer a smarter journey that ensures building your new home is as simple as can be. “So, if you’re looking to build, talk to our friendly, experienced team today,” says Adam. “We utilise a fantastic project management software that allows our clients to login into their own build, where they can see photos of the construction process, consented plans, documentation, and even the schedule of what will be happening on site. Meet our new director Hi. My name is Karen Thomas. Recently I was appointed onto the board as a director. I am very privileged and excited to be appointed. Thank you to the board for this opportunity. I have been a member at Club Waimea for the previous five years and enjoying playing darts for Club Waimea. I’m the secretary for our dart section, have been for a few years now and love to compete

at Tournaments all around NZ representing our club – love the darts! I have a teenage boy, work full time managing The Body Shop, and have a lot to do with running association darts here in Nelson as well. Club Waimea is a great club, something to be very proud of and I look forward to working with the board members. See you at Club Waimea.

Wednesday 19th September 2016, my first day of work at Club Waimea! Where has that two years disappeared to? It’s been a very quick and rewarding time as far as I am concerned; I’ve met a huge amount of people, slowly but surely chipping away at improvements around the Club and I’ve introduced a few new ideas in music and advertising systems. Most of all, I love to see the place busy with lots of smiles surrounding us, AWESOME!

Before

Karen Thomas

I have thoroughly enjoyed these first two years as manager of your Club, and I hope that I can continue to be of service to you all for a lot longer yet, as I have many more improvements to work on, to make your Club experience even more pleasurable. This last week has seen the major upgrade of the caravan park roads, culminating in the sealing of them (see photo’s). We are currently looking at further furniture upgrades, the rearrangement of the snooker room (to accommodate our snooker tables and

the greater number of pool tables required to house our revitalised pool section), and a bit of action in the gaming room is also in order. Entertainment is flowing along well, with a lot coming up over this next month, so put it in your diary from the list provided here in the article, and be sure to be here to enjoy! Well that’s me for now, a very enjoyable first two years, THANK YOU ALL, so let’s continue to support our Club and have FUN! Cheers.

Initially they sold their grapes to winemakers but created their own winery in 2000. “We dabbled with the idea of starting an apple orchard, but decided we were more passionate about wine,” says Gary. “We love wine, we love the wine industry and we love business too. Brightwater, along with many areas, is in for residential growth. As the community grows there is always the thought that with growth comes issues of how secure is our neighbourhood. The Brightwater Community Association was visited on Wednesday, September 12, by Jamie White of the Wakefield police. He kindly informed us of how we can go about making Brightwater safer for all with the use of cameras. These are not for purposes of looking into people’s lives but for having that security if something goes wrong so we have all exits covered. Wakefield and Brightwater are currently pricing up these cameras. If there is any business in these two areas that feel they could also contribute or benefit from a monitored

Debbie Watson and Wendy Pearson have owned the Tall Poppy Nelson franchise since 2016. We pride ourselves on providing an excellent level of service without charging the earth, and have a simple, fair, flat fee that means your costs are totally transparent from the start. We’ve often been asked how we can offer a Smaller Fee, while still providing our Big on Service promise. We simply do things smarter – technology has changed the world of real estate with most people now searching property on their mobile phones and devices. Being mobile means we come to you wherever you need us to be, and with no office and associated overheads loaded into your fee, we can put money back in your pocket. Make sense? We think so, and so do many others, as the Tall Poppy team is growing throughout New Zealand with salespeople from Auckland to Queenstown. Tall Poppy believes in values, and treating all parties involved in the real estate transaction with respect, and our main focus is on achieving the best possible outcome for our house seller. If you’ve got any questions or want to have chat about your real estate needs, give Debbie or Wendy a call – we would love to hear from you.

Wanderers club bowled out for now Jonty Dine One of Nelson’s most successful cricket clubs is in crisis. For the first time since its inception in 1983, Wanderers will not field a senior side in the Nelson premier competition this season. Wanderers stalwart Hayden Ingham says it is a sad day for the club. “It’s absolutely gutting, personally I’ve put 14 years into what has been a very proud club for thirty odd years and had a lot of successes, so it’s very disappointing.” Hayden says they were about four players short of fielding a full squad. “We have been short for the last few years but unfortunately in the off season we lost six of our starting lineup, so that killed us.” Hayden says Matt Campbell and ex Wanderers great Andy Leonard put in a lot of work to try and save the side. “We just couldn’t get over the line but hopefully it’s just a one-year thing.” Hayden hopes the senior side can be revived in the coming years. “We have got a lot of juniors so hopefully we can get

become a reality.” He says there was a sense of inevitability about Wanderers withdrawal. “The club has struggled for numbers for a season or so but have managed to get by, but there are number of things that have created a perfect storm.” He says player movement has been a big factor. “Some of their better players have moved outside the region which has had a significant impact.” Dave says there are also some issues off the field in relation to the operations of the club which need to be dealt with. “The club has a long history in the premier competition and in the past has been very successful.” He says Nelson Cricket will support Wanderers back into a situation where they can be a force again. “We are hopeful, but it comes down to the club. I have no doubt that they can come back to participate and succeed again in premier.” With the premier division now down to five teams. “It should still be pretty strong, we are working through a number of different options for how our competition may be structured.”

After a bit of a hiatus, three teams from our region will travel to Tauranga to compete in the New Zealand Table Tennis Nationals and represent Nelson Tasman in October. Kylie Collett, who represented New Zealand alongside Daniel Astle in the early nineties, says it is fantastic to see the sport growing. ”Apart from the junior boys, all the other players travelling, with a few of them having left the sport for 20 odd years, are now returning to play once again. That’s the great thing about this sport, once you know how to play you can always have a break and come back to it later.” Kylie’s mother, Glenda Ferguson, has been playing for 57 years and still loves the sport. Paul Op den Busch also played when he was younger, is now back after 20 years, and is club captain and selector of the Nelson Table Tennis Club and also helps to coach some of the younger players. Kylie adds, “Jack Wells has done extremely well with his table tennis too, he has attended the Youth Olympics, Junior World Tournament and, along with Daniel and I, has won numerous national titles.” Waimea Intermediate student Finn Brown and Garin College pupil Kvido Tayerle, will be joining the players at the Nationals as an U15 boys’

The annual five-person relay starts at Waitohi Domain and is limited to eighty teams, finishing at Havelock. With the sun shining and the scenery around the Sounds stunning, a wonderful atmosphere was created for the athletes and supporters alike. A strong feeling of camaraderie was very evident within each team and competitive rivalry was keen between the 49 teams entered, from all over New Zealand. A strong contingent of 17 teams came from the Nelson region. Athletics Nelson Senior Men were the overall winners of the relay, with their five runners completing the 35km course in a very fast and impressive time of 2:06:52hrs. Under 15 Boys Team Training boosted for big tournament the 2018 Nelson Bays u15 football Boys squad has just ramped up its training schedule to two practises per week, ahead of the 15th Grade south island tournament happening early next month. the si tournaments are for boys and girls aged 11 to 16 to represent their districts or clubs in an end of season tournament, with over 100 teams from mainland football and football south participating. “We are getting the boys fit and ready to compete,” says experienced coach, mark Johnston. “over the past five years, we’ve had a lot of success in this tournament; we’ve won it four times and were runners up last year. When they are young, it’s about enjoyment of the sport and building on their technical skills, so for now we are concentrating on helping them improve for when they play senior football.”

mark who has been coaching the team for three consecutive years, has seen players come and go. “every year it’s a little bit different. We’ve been more focussed on the tactical side of it – it will be interesting to see how they comprehend it all and put it together on the field.” mark says the team’s strength is having a great balance, from goal keeping right through to attack; “We are really consistent in every area. it’s a once in a lifetime group - we have a great bunch of young men which have come together. their main issue is pressure; they are the top team, and most sides will want to beat them, so there’s pressure to perform, scoreboard pressure, tiredness and so on. it’s how they deal with it.” mark Johnston enjoys nurturing the talented u15 Boys’ team, himself a

great role model, having carved an impressive football career which began when he was 15. “it’s taken me to all sorts of levels – national league, tasman united, four years in america on a scholarship. He’s also done his senior level coaching certificate, and is currently working on his New Zealand and ofCB license. mark has also coached the Nelson-marlborough falcons, who were the under 20

youth champions in a national summer tournament. “the Nelson Bays u15 Boys’ squad are very focused, committed and really worthwhile supporting by way of sponsorship. at the upcoming tournament, it’s easy for teams to have one bad game and get knocked out; it’s not so much about the outcome – it’s more about seeing their development in the build-up period.”

ROAD CLOSURES

Applicant: Nelson Advanced Drivers School Limited

Getting moving is good for us at all ages – and we want to make sure Tasman District is easy to get around for those walking, cycling or using other forms of “active transport”. Active transport refers to any form of transportation using physical activity as the source of movement – such as walking, cycling, skateboarding, scootering and so on. The World Health Organisation recommends adults get at least 20 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise every day. That can be hard to fit in unless it becomes part of everyday life – such as travelling from home to the shops, work or a friend’s place. Active transport is also a great way for older people to remain mobile when driving is no longer possible or preferred. Tasman’s population of over-65s is expected to double in the next 30 years, so this will become increasingly important. To make sure our transportation network meets the growing demand for active forms of transport, we’re developing an Active Transport strategy. We need your help to identify the demand for active transport, improvements we could make, and what you would like active transport infrastructure to look like in 30 years. We want our local roads to be safe. Making sure the speed limit is appropriate for the conditions is an important part of a safe roading network, so we’re reviewing the limits across Tasman District. We need your input – do you think changes to the speed limit on any roads you use would help reduce serious crashes? Have your say: Email your feedback, including locations and supporting reasons why you think a change would contribute to reducing deaths and serious injuries, to Megan.Bell@tasman.govt.nz. The feedback round closes on Monday 15 October 2018. Next steps: Once we’ve received your feedback, we will carry out a technical assessment of the sites where a different speed limit has been suggested. This will include:

We will then recommend a list of changes to local speed limits. Public consultation on the recommended changes will take place before the changes are finalised.

Kids from St Paul’s School get into the spirit of tennis at Richmond’s club with coach Kolie Van Zyl. The Nelson Bays Tennis Associations ‘Have a Go’ tennis open day took place over the weekend. Schools were invited to take part in a free hour of fun games on court to launch the tennis season. “Each club radiated a warm family atmosphere, parents relaxing on the side lines, courts overflowing with aspiring tennis stars. The event was a huge success,” says Ali McQuillan, regional coordinator, Nelson Bays Tennis Association. Photo: Supplied.
