A sea of pink flooded the TDC offices last week as council staff showed their support for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. Sarah Downs organised the dress up within the Tasman District Council and says the main objective was to raise awareness about breast cancer. Within TDC, and outreach service centres and libraries, staff were encouraged to wear pink for that day. Pink ribbons and breast cancer pens were sold for the foundation. Sarah says with those alone the TDC raised $148 just at the main office, but had not yet received totals from the service centres. They also had a barbecue at lunchtime and a raffle draw where all the prizes on offer were pink.
Fanzones ready for Rugby World Cup finale New Zealand’s biggest sporting event is only days away and locals will get the opportunity to taste action with Fanzones set up around the region, as well as in local pubs and rugby clubrooms. The All Blacks beat Australia 20-6 to book its place in the Rugby World Cup final this Sunday night against France at Auckland’s Eden Park, and Fanzone organisers are expecting thousands to turn out to cheer on
their side in either Nelson or Motueka. Robbies Bar & Bistro is one of many bars and restaraunts in the Tasman region screening the game. Its owner, Phil Hazeldine, is hoping for a good turnout this weekend and will be showing the game live on five big screens. He says there will also be a drinks special of four Heinekens for $12 up until half time. Waimea Old Boys will be screening the
final live from the rugby club rooms, and for a small charge will also be cranking the barbecue at 7:30pm in the lead up to the 9pm kick off. Wanderers club manager Diane Drogemuller says they would be likely to screen the game if the interest was there. Everyone spoken to by the Waimea Weekly expected numbers to increase with a public holiday following the game.

If the All Blacks were to win this Sunday it would be just their second world crown, the first coming 24 years ago. It also comes after a year of tragedy for the country. First the Pike River mine disaster, then the Canterbury earthquakes, and now the oil spill. A world cup win for New Zealand’s favourite sports team, in our national sport and on home turf, would be an apt way to lift spirit.
