A sea of pink flooded the TDC offices last week as council staff showed their support for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. Sarah Downs organised the dress up within the Tasman District Council and says the main objective was to raise awareness about breast cancer. Within TDC, and outreach service centres and libraries, staff were encouraged to wear pink for that day. Pink ribbons and breast cancer pens were sold for the foundation. Sarah says with those alone the TDC raised $148 just at the main office, but had not yet received totals from the service centres. They also had a barbecue at lunchtime and a raffle draw where all the prizes on offer were pink.
Fanzones ready for Rugby World Cup finale New Zealand’s biggest sporting event is only days away and locals will get the opportunity to taste action with Fanzones set up around the region, as well as in local pubs and rugby clubrooms. The All Blacks beat Australia 20-6 to book its place in the Rugby World Cup final this Sunday night against France at Auckland’s Eden Park, and Fanzone organisers are expecting thousands to turn out to cheer on
their side in either Nelson or Motueka. Robbies Bar & Bistro is one of many bars and restaraunts in the Tasman region screening the game. Its owner, Phil Hazeldine, is hoping for a good turnout this weekend and will be showing the game live on five big screens. He says there will also be a drinks special of four Heinekens for $12 up until half time. Waimea Old Boys will be screening the
final live from the rugby club rooms, and for a small charge will also be cranking the barbecue at 7:30pm in the lead up to the 9pm kick off. Wanderers club manager Diane Drogemuller says they would be likely to screen the game if the interest was there. Everyone spoken to by the Waimea Weekly expected numbers to increase with a public holiday following the game.

If the All Blacks were to win this Sunday it would be just their second world crown, the first coming 24 years ago. It also comes after a year of tragedy for the country. First the Pike River mine disaster, then the Canterbury earthquakes, and now the oil spill. A world cup win for New Zealand’s favourite sports team, in our national sport and on home turf, would be an apt way to lift spirit.

Church fair a huge success
The Richmond Church of Christ fair returned with its biggest showing in a number of years on the weekend. Close to $3000 was raised in the fair and the money is likely to be put towards improving the church’s facilities, says minister Steve Rollo. Steve says it was a great “community event” with many of the punters on the day coming from outside the church family. “It was a great day and there was a number of people showing interest in our services and youth programmes, which was good too,” he says. “The fair is always a great opportunity for the church to work together.” Plants and jams were the big sellers on the day, along with the famous home-made pikelets and garage sale items. Richmond Church of Christ also has a number of community events lined up with the return of Blokes in the Kitchen, Women in Craft, amongst BOUNCE: Nathan Paul, 3, jumps on the bouncy castle. Bill Monk will manage to tick off one thing on his wife’s bucket list this weekend, as the couple jet off to the Rugby World Cup final. The banker was the recipient of an internal ANZ/National Group prize pool that saw him win two tickets to the final along with flights and accommodation all paid for. Two thousand seven hundred and ninty staff members entered the competition, which included five Rugby World Cup based questions, and Bill’s name was pulled out of the hat. “I rang my wife and I was like ‘put some wine in the fridge for dinner because I’m coming home early. I’ve won something better than money’,” he says. Bill says going to a Rugby World Cup was on his wife Nerida’s bucket list, which was made two years ago. “It was a bit of a dream really. We always wanted to go. It’s just unbelievable.” With three rugby-mad sons, it was always going to be his wife Nerida who came on the trip. And while there’s no doubt Bill will be expecting a New Zealand win over France, the Richmond man said he would not have minded if the All Blacks hadn’t reached the final from a spectacle point of view. “The chance to go up there and experience the atmosphere, even it had been two neutral sides would still have been an awe-

Speed tolerance tightens ahead of holiday Police are hoping for a safe weekend on the roads this Labour Weekend and are reminding drivers of their lowered speed tolerance of four kilometres per hour. Lowering the tolerance has made a real difference to the number of deaths on the roads over previous holiday periods since it was introduced last year. Tasman District road policing manager Inspector Jenni Richardson says drivers could expect roads to be busy with the holiday coinciding with the final Rugby World Cup 2011 game and other events across the district. “There are large number of tourists driving around the country who may be un-

ON THE CATWALK: On the Fashion Island ‘Funway’ on Saturday.
Designers strut on ‘funway’ Fashion Island shopping centre was transformed into a runway and spectator gallery as Project Funway unleashed Nelson’s design creativity on Saturday. Designers were supplied with a plain white king sized bed sheet, as their canvas and the rest was up to the imagination and inspiration of the participants. The outcome was a snapshot of Nelson’s inventiveness with designs ranging from grungepunk inspired outfits to chic, tailored gowns. “We were very impressed with the creativity of all the contestants, says Fashion Island centre manager Susan Matz. “From the primary school-aged contestants through to those in the open category, we were just totally amazed with their work.” There were three categories with a winner in each, an update on the original format. Primary/intermediate; secondary to 18 years and open. The change was mainly due to there being so much talent throughout the spectrum of participants. “We wanted the little children who are amazing as well, to be able come first in their own right,” says Susan. With many of the designers and models walking the runway for the first time, the butterflies must have been fluttering, but the fashion aficionados showed their support. “There was loud applause, cheering and whistling, which were perfect because the contestants were pretty nervous,” says Susan.

Cracking time at World Egg Day
Breast cancer volunteers thank generous locals Sharon Bateman and Kay Monopoli took to the streets of Richmond to help fundraise during Pink Ribbon Appeal Day. Sharon, who had lost her sister to breast cancer, says the feedback and support and been very positive. “People see that this is an importance. It’s what we want to do to help and I think it’s making a lot of people aware as well,” she says. Sharon believed people’s perception had changed in the last couple of years with so many people affected by the disease. A cracking celebration for World Egg Day was highlighed by a tightly contested egg and spoon race and full bellies. Ewing Poultry served up almost 300 cooked breakfasts using close to 600 eggs during the celebrations on Friday morning. A few dozen more were used for the egg and spoon races and another batch were decorated by children in the egg dressing competition. Forced in to the army 50 years on Imagine watching Lotto and instead of the numbers shooting out potentially winning you millions, they won you a place in the army. That was exactly the fate for 20 year-old Lindsay Jukes and 18 year-old Malcolm Melven around 50 years ago. The pair were drafted into the National Service Training, a compulsory military training scheme in place in New Zealand in the 1950’s and after a short break, again in the 1960’s. They, along with other locals who were apart of the compulsory military training, are hosting a national reunion in Nelson to celebrate 50 years of the National Service. For Malcolm, he was drafted into the CMT – or compulsory military training – that was in force in the 1950’s to help build up a strong list of trained men in the decade after World War 2. He says the 14 week initial training and then yearly refreshers were “fun” and he enjoyed the experience. “It wasn’t an option so you didn’t think about it, you had to go and had to behave, so we did. The punishment of acting up wasn’t worth it,” he says. He recalls several of his fellow draftees having to scrub rocks with toothbrushes and dig holes, only to then fill them in again. “It was pretty demoralising for them so the easiest thing was to keep Lindsay Jukes, left, and Malcolm Melven are helping organise a nayour trap shut.” tional reunion for ex service-men in Nelson. Musician makes NZ schools band
LETTERS
The heartbeat of brass music in this country resides right here in Nelson and that beat will be accompanied this week by 40 of New Zealand’s top young brass players, including one from St Arnaud. The Secondary Schools Brass Band of New Zealand is assembling in Nelson this week, under the direction of Nick Sharpe, a man credited with transforming the genre in this city. Also being selected in the band is four Nelson Vivace Youth Band members. Ben Wotherspoon, of St Arnaud, and Waimea College, fought off tough competition to get seats on the second horn. The band will meet up this Thursday at Teapot Valley to work on new songs over the weekend before taking their talents to local schools and hosting a concert at Nelson’s Theatre Royal. Ben says this was his first audition for the band and was stoked to make the camp.
My apologies for having overlooked not thanking you for the wonderful article you wrote on Dad [Gordon Max with his father’s All Black cap] for the Waimea Weekly [October 5, 2011]. He was absolutely chuffed and it has
“I’m looking for to it. Meeting new people and there will be lots of new pieces to play. Difficult pieces too, which will be really exciting,” he says. Ben has been playing the tenor horn for four and a half years and hopes performing with the other New Zealand members will help him continue his rise in the music industry. “I just want to take the skills I already have to the next level,” he says. The band will give a concert at the Nelson Theatre Royal on Monday October 24 under the baton of Nick Sharpe. The concert will feature a wide variety of music from early to modern, with a few surprises thrown in. Evan Sayer, executive member of the National Brass Band Association, says Nelson is becoming quite a centre for brass music. Groups from the band will also visit schools around the region on Tuesday and Wednesday 25 and 26 October.

Sign winners score big The winners of the Go Makos competition met with Richmond Mall manager David Hill on Monday morning to show off their banners. The Go Makos competition was run by the Richmond Mall and entrants had to make a sign saying ‘Go Makos’ and the Richmond Mall. They then took a photo of the sign in the coolest place around the region. The winners of the competition all won a $1000 Richmond Mall voucher each. The winners were; Montana Heslop, Josh Wilkinson, as well as Anna and Emily Milson. Montana says she has already spent her $1000 while the others still had money to spend. David said the majority of the money usually goes on buying electronics.

Local people with local knowledge Founded in 1996 by the McKeown family, Trends Kitchens takes pride in bringing quality kitchens and joinery to South Island homes. Unlike franchise owned companies with a limited product range, Trends Kitchens can provide you a custom made kitchen produced by our own certified tradesmen, in our own factory. As the demand for this style of designer kitchen service spread around the South Island, so have Trends Kitchens showrooms and branches. Not long after we opened a branch in Nelson, we found people were coming all the way from Blenheim to see us. We were happy to create a site to accommodate our Blenheim clients, and our Renwick showroom was born. Today, you can walk into a Trends Kitchens showroom in Nelson, Blenheim, Cromwell or Christchurch, and meet with a local designer who can offer you a free measure and quote for the perfect kitchen to accompany your new home or renovation.
When you confirm your purchase with Trends Kitchens, you’re eligible for a no obligation interior design consultation from the team at ColourPlus, to compliment your new kitchen. Ask our friendly staff for details.

“A million shades of green........” Cruze took me for a walk the other day, (anyone who sees us while out and about on our walks will attest to the fact that this is true!) He is only 22 months old but at 40-odd kilos he does tend to be in charge at least some of the time. We were weeding our way up the Marsden Valley and it just looked so beautiful up on the hills with all the different shades of green – there must have been hundreds. The trees in this area are well established and many beautiful species are flowering and leafing up at this, my favourite time of the year. Flowering cherries dotted the hill with spots of pink and white while the large Rhododendrons are looking fabulous, with their bright flowers making a truly lovely
coloured canopy. Elms, oak, chestnuts and willows are all starting to move with beautiful fresh green leaves and of course the Kowhai stands proudly, fairly dripping with golden flowers. They are looking particularly good this season. The photo this edition is another of my favourite trees. This is the simply fabulous Cornus “Cloud 9”. It is a C.florida X C.nuttallii hybrid and is one of the earliest to set those lovely flowering bracts. They are not petals as such, but they cover the fairly insignificant flowers that are set right in the middle of the bloom. I look at this lovely tree from my dining room window. Cornus florida (Flowering Dogwoods) are native to north eastern USA and can grow to 8 metres or more in their original form. The hybrids that we are able to buy here are some of the most attractive and smaller growing varieties – look for Cornus “Pink Flame” and “Cherokee Chief ” as well as Florida variegata. These are also grown for their beautiful coloured foliage. Another popular Cornus seen around Nelson – some beautiful specimens are growing outside the Stoke Medical Centre on Waimea Rd – is Cornus “Edading ing/spre w lo dies White Wonder,” and he really is! b o s blem le hose, not a pro of flexib s is lu re p He will be flowering in the next week or e h m st anyw with 60 ell almo quipped h e s , is il r o two so look out as you drive by. e s rkblow mpost, • Our ba lch, sawdust, co n a th l ! a We could go on for hours about materi bark mu es to 300 effective 0% less -4 bic metr 0 t u 2 s c o s c 3 e s d m the varieties Northern Hemisphere • Fro ient an nly so u ick, effic very eve ! e prices • It is qu blower spreads o raking v n n Cornus, as there are hundreds, but for ti o s ti d e e te p e o rk dn e qu at com • The ba nal methods an for a fre supplied ry e e b v me “Eddie” and “Cloud 9 “are my pick! o n A ti a n c e rk t conv ompos Call Ma 3223z They like a good fertile soil – neutral 2 3 bark & c otes! 1 ty li 1 a u 2 .n Q u o • q vide free 1820vis/it0www.barkblower.c • We pro to acid ph, and will do well in sun or 03 544 or semishade. Now, back to work, and I was going to talk about lawn care and maintenance. This is the last month to do this as it will soon be too hot....I hope! Every three years or so it is a good idea to scarify your lawn. You do this by using a scarifying rake, which has a twisted tine so it cuts through the grass and rakes up a lot of the old thatch that gathers over time. It is this build-up of old grass that stops the water getting
through to the roots of the lawn and you really notice a difference if this is done every now and then. Your lawn will look as though it is having a “bad hair day” and the neighbours will think you are taking housekeeping to a whole other level, but your lawn will thank you. Next step aerate – you can do this by hiring a roller with pikes all over it, by strapping spikes to bottom of your shoes (yes you can buy these I believe) and jumping about all over the grass, or my preferred method is getting the man who digs holes to go over the lawn with the garden fork, in straight rows of course, while you make a cup of tea! Once this is done you can then spread your preferred fertiliser and in most cases you will either have to water it in, or as the cost of water is fairly steep in Nelson, you could wait for rain. Don’t worry, after you have done all of the above the neighbours won’t turn a hair when they see you out in the rain throwing little white pellets everywhere. There are various lawn foods on the market. Quick fix feed for instant results is probably a granular uncoated fertiliser which has to be spread evenly – so you don’t end up with a striped lawn – and this must be watered in well so as not to burn the grass. Scotts products are my preference. They have a range of coated fertilisers, some with weed killers (read the instructions), some with a wetting agent (good for water saving), and the good old Lawn Builder. If you want to feed a lawn that is less than 12 months old, Scotts have a Starter and Repair fertiliser which can be used safely without burning tender young grass.
Q& A
Pleased to say we have a question from our first column. Evan from Motueka wants to know how to get rid of whitefly. Well Evan – the short answer to this is “with great difficulty!” They are really clever dudes who lay their eggs right in and under leaves which makes the spraying difficult. The adults will just fly off when you approach and land again when you go. You have been using Target which is a translaminar contact spray working through the leaf from one side to the other so it should do the trick. You must get to the underside of the leaves where the eggs and nymphs are to be effective. Here are some other suggestions: Confidor, which is a systemic spray and has not been around as long as Target, so a change might be good. I don’t like sprays which are harmful to bees and other good things, so would suggest “Beat a Bug” which is a spray and food in one, and is garlic and chilli based with natural pyrethrins. It also contains a fixative which may give you better adherence. It will still kill bees when wet and should be sprayed in the evening and not in full sun. I have also been told that a good squirt with the hose under the leaves will deter them as they do not lay eggs on a wet surface....good luck!

CLUB WAIMEA NEWS Masters Games draws Melbourne Cup racing back to Club Waimea athletes from all over Ph: 543 9179
The South Island Masters Games are currently being held in Nelson for the first time. Around 3,000 people have come from around the country to compete in over 50 different sports, some being played right here at the Club. President John Allan feels that it is a great thing for the district; “I think this will bring more into the economy of the area than the Rugby World Cup. You’ve got three thousand people, they moved in here yesterday, and they’re not going out until Monday of the Labour Weekend,” he says. Several of the events were held at Club Waimea, including squash, pool, snooker and the darts

portion of the Twilight 400. Spectators were welcome, and participants felt that the Club Waimea did a great job as host, many of the tournament participants being members of the Club. The pool competition concluded over the weekend, with many of the medals being taken out by locals; Mark Friend and Susie Hopwood of Club Waimea took out the pairs, and individually won the men’s and women’s medals for the over 40s. The Masters Games are like the Olympic Games on a smaller scale, and competitors of any skill can sign up to compete in as few or as many sports as they like.

Club Waimea Spring Races will be an event you can bet on. Melbourne Cup celebrations promise to lead the pack at Club Waimea. Their new TAB facilities will allow punters to have something extra riding on their favourite horse, and after the Melbourne Cup race the Club will host their own Spring Races. Everyone who attends the Club

Club Waimea will be in tune with members as four acapella groups stage a concert at the end of the month. Men in Accord, formerly Bays Barbershop Chorus, are hosting the concert, singing alongside Belle a Cappella, from Waimea College, and two women’s choruses. Other entertainment will include a Jazz combo and an Accordion duo, and a group of teenage ballroom dancers. All performers are members at the club, and are staging two shows on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 October. The audience will be seated cabaret style in the Club’s function hall, and the ticket cost includes afternoon tea or supper. With so many

talented groups, whose passion it is to sing and entertain, it promises to be a great night. Men In Accord have a been together for 15 years, and have entertained all over the region, wowing audiences with their harmonies. 2011 has seen a new Musical Director, Rob Beale, take up the baton and he has the group singing better than ever. “We come from all walks of life, but when we stand on the risers and sing four part harmony, we have a united sound that only unaccompanied singing can produce, from ballads, Beatles, to blues. We wanted a name that told audiences who we are, and what we do – singing inside those chords and busting out of them with energy and passion.”

Workshop shows women what they want The What a Woman Wants workshop was attended by over 300 women who received expert fashion advice from Lisa O’Neill, in association with Farmers. Guests enjoyed dinner and drinks as Lisa introduced Farmers new season clothes, the intention to ‘inspire women to clear out their wardrobes, get the right clothes that fit the right bodies, and feel good about themselves,’ says Lisa. There were prizes and raffles, and all the women received a helpful handbook to help determine
what body type they are, and what clothes Farmers have to flatter their shape. The fundraiser filled the function hall with women of all ages, and was sponsored by Farmers. All the proceeds of Lisa’s workshops go to the host venue’s local Plunket charity to improve their facilities. Lisa has 18 years experience in the fashion industry and tours the country fundraising, as well as helping women dress their best within their budget.

New Show Home at 5 Fairose Drive, Richmond On the Brightside Brightwater Community Newsletter Welcome to our October Newsletter, This month we were lucky to be able to have our meeting in the new staffroom at Brightwater School, what an awesome staffroom it is, we would like to take this opportunity to thank Brightwater School for the use of their great facilities. Since our last meeting we have had a meeting with the Nelson Cycle Trails Trust. Stuart Hughes came and spoke to us about the Cycle Trail and we now have the chance to have a say where the cycle trail will pass through Brightwater. We will be having a meeting with all interested parties sometime soon, we would like to see you all there, especially those people/
businesses that could expect to see the cyclists. Please watch out for this meeting date. At our regular meeting this month we heard from the people who spoke to their submissions at the Local Government Commission hearings for the amalgamation of Tasman and Nelson. They were interested in what our Community Association had to say and we look forward to their decision, whether they stop the process now or we go to a vote early next year. It was an interesting experience. Also up for discussion was the 10 year strategic plan. The TDC want to know
what our community sees as the most important priorities for our area. Our first two are:1 Bryant Lane/Lord Rutherford Road intersection. This corner is very dangerous, trucks turning on to Waimea West Road use the whole of the road. Also visibility from Bryants Road on to Ellis Street is very bad. 2 Village Green – we would like to see the land purchased to increase the size of the village green and for it to be landscaped. We do have other ideas for the strategic plan like street scaping and another entranceway into school that would be

Rural Women New Zealand
The Nelson Provincial branch of Rural Women New Zealand recently held a Fun and Facts Day for members and anyone else who wanted to attend. Over 50 women attended for an interesting day. In the morning they took part in workshops, including scarf tying, container gardening, home
maintenance, making a felt flower, and a food review for seniors. In the afternoon the women were joined by Fiona Newey from the Nelson/Tasman Cycle Trail Trust who spoke about the cycleways extending to Wakefied and Mapua, and also Shirley Montgomery who spoke about Trade Aid and Fair Trade.

Your Business Cards The Brightwater Community Association Inc. are collecting business cards/details of as many local businesses as possible. It is hoped to compile a ‘BUSINESS DIRECTORY’ of these, which will in turn be distributed to households locally. The idea is to have as many folk supporting our local businesses. Many of you do already, and that’s fantastic, but as there are a number of new residents in Brightwater it’s always helpful to have a handy guide for quick reference. If you would like to drop your card/ information into one of the ‘drop boxes’ located within the village area. These are located at: Brightwater Motors, McLeans 4 Square, Sprig & Fern Tavern, Brightwater Motor Inn, Ellis Street Auto Repairs. Maggie Horne serves up a Devonshire tea to a group of cyclists participating in The Gentle Cycling Company Country and Vineyard Ride, profits from which went to Pinegrove Kindergarten.
Konica Minolta Nelson Cyclefest The Gentle Cycling Company Country and Vineyard Ride Brightwater played host again to a group of cyclists on Saturday 1 October. The Gentle Cycling Company Country and Vineyard Ride was a joint effort, combining the beauty of a local vineyard and the Brightwater countryside with the scone-making skills of the Pinegrove Kindergarten parents. The Konica Minolta Nelson Cyclefest is now in its second year, and consists of a range of cycling events, including mountain bike, road bike, children’s’ and social rides. Rose Griffin, of The Gentle Cycling Company, organised the Brightwater ride to offer social cyclists an opportunity to explore the loop from the village, along the Waimea Walkway and back around the beautiful country roads to the vineyard of Maggie and Terry Horne for a Devonshire tea. “Our ride is not a race” she said. “We want cyclists to take their time
and really enjoy the landscape.” Kaimira Vineyard was open for tastings and wine sales on the route, and many cyclists stopped to enjoy St Michael’s church on Waimea West Road. All profits from the ride go to the Pinegrove Kindergarten. This year they are fund-raising for their visiting author project. This project aims to celebrate and increase awareness and opportunities for literacy. Last year the visiting author was former Nelsonian Robyn Belton, who not only writes but also illustrates her books. Her visit was an absolute highlight on the kindergarten calendar for children and their families as she opened a door into the world of Herbert - a delightful story based on a true story of a Nelson dog. Naomi Ivala, head teacher at the kindergarten said, “Robyn is a wonderful inspiration for parents to take time to read with your children and we wanted to bring her back again.”
150 years of worship at St Paul’s has been recorded in an updated history book. Hollis Hill’s original Centennial booklet has been updated to include a record of the last 50 years. The booklet begins with the early history of the region where the first services were held in a tent, to the building of the Church, the second oldest still standing. Tales include details of an early fundraiser where a pew could be rented at 5 shillings, and the one about the Vicar’s cow, which got into the church and ate the Harvest Festival vegetables, and another in which the Vicar’s pig escaped and caused problems. Details about ‘Life in the Vicarage’ are included from Margaret Kawharu and Elaine Shields. Diane Higgins wrote the updated section of the book and has included extra historical photos as well as photos of groups involved with the church.

Nelson athletes have already won a swag of medals at the South Island Masters Games, with another four days of action still to come. Nelson teams have won medals in most of the more than 50 sports being contested during the games, but the most impressive milestone so far has been the number of national or South Island records to fall, with three new records set on the very first day of competition, last Saturday. Three New Zealand Masters 10km track walk records were broken. Wendy Healy smashed the 35-39 year old age group record (72:19.0) by 16 minutes, which had been held by Katie Tahere since 2009. Wendy’s time was 56:16.97. Wendy says she felt really great the whole way. “I was feeling really good - it was just like going out for a Sunday walk.” Nyle Sunderland completed the 10km walk in 56:34.65, breaking Gillian MacDougall’s record (57:38.0) in the 40-44 year old age group by one minute and four seconds. Gillian had held the record since 2003. Nyle says she is absolutely ecstatic. Neroli Amyes broke the 55-59 year old age group record (60:00.35) achieved last year by Sue Hoskin. Her time was 57:30.72. She says she went a lot faster than expected.

Otago Sparks cricketer in search of a club Otago Sparks all-rounder Victoria Abbott has played cricket every year since she was just eight years-old. But the 23 year-old is in danger of missing the 2011/12 season in Nelson because she can’t find a team that will take her. Victoria competes in the State League, the premier women’s competition in New Zealand Cricket and last year featured in the Waimea College boys second division side. But with Waimea College fold-

ing as a senior first division team, player numbers have been condensed in to two teams, so Victoria has been on the lookout for a new team, with little success. She says the major factor has been squads already featuring a full roster, but hopes that gender hasn’t played a part in her non-selection. Victoria is so keen to get out on the pitch she’s willing to just field if it helps her get picked up by a club. “I’m getting that feeling that because I’m
the only woman cricketer here that they think I’m not up to their level, but I still feel it would be good for my game. I just love being out there.” Otago fly her down for matches, she is just responsible for her own training, which is seriously lacking game time. “I’ve played every weekend since I was eight. Sure I love my weekends, but I’m crazy about sport and cricket is my number one.”

Netballers create a piece of history Phillip Rollo The Waimea College netball team have created a piece of history, reaching the top eight in New Zealand. It was the first time Waimea College had sent a team to the New Zealand Secondary School Netball Championship and the side’s coach Faye Eden says the team ticked off all three goals set prior to the tournament. “It was a fantastic effort. It was the first time Waimea College had even been to nationals, so yeah to get top eight was going to be a big ask,” says Faye. “There’s no easy teams.” Captain Zoe Walker was named in the tournament team and that came as no surprise to her coach. Faye says the goal keep/goal defence had a stellar tournament and really stood out. “Only two girls from the South Island made the tournament team, so it’s huge. The girls all played as a team though. Megan [Thomson] shot well, Summer [Roberts], we slotted her in to any position, Ella [Marwick] never died. It was a real team effort.” Waimea College opened their account against a formidable Mt Albert Grammar School side, losing 47-15. Faye says that result was a huge
wake up call for the girls who then stepped up to the mark to put away Columba College 41-20 and St Mary’s College 26-20, gaining qualification to the next round. Victory over Columba College had even more meaning to it, after they knocked them out of the quarter finals at the South Island Secondary School Championship earlier in the year. “Beating Columba was great. That was one of our other goals, to get revenge and we absolutely slaughtered them.” Waimea College had a tough road in the next round and failed to pick up any wins in their remaining three matches. South Island champions Craighead Diocesan School edged Waimea 31-33 before also losing to eventual winners Tu Toa 19-35, Palmerston North Girls High School 26-31 and Auckland Grammar School 31-36. Considering their tougher side of the playoffs, Faye says the girls will hang their heads high. “I told them that we have just created history. This is a big thing for the team and the school. It’s been a long season, the girls have trained twice a week since February, when we went up north, it’s a great effort for that and I’m sure it’s going to be nice to have a rest too.”

NEW RIDE: Ian Burson is ready for the coming Nelson Speedway season. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
New car gives Burson the edge Ian Burson has taken to his new super saloon like a duck to water. Freshly sign painted, Ian now is ready to hit the track ahead of the Top of the South Speedway season and has his eyes firmly set on the New Zealand Championship, which he hopes will book him with another visit to the sign-writers’. But whether it’s 1NZ or 21n, Ian is confident that his new car has enough horse power to see him reach career best times in 2011/12. Ian’s new saloon is based on a C6 Corvette and was built in Tauranga while the Chevrolet engine was constructed in Auckland. Ian is a former New Zealand Super Saloon Grand Prix winner but will be competing in search of the New Zealand Championship on home soil come January, following the announcement that Nelson will be hosting the championship on January 13 and 14. Ian says after five years of impressive results, he needed to upgrade in order to catch the top tier of drivers. “Last year we were struggling on the longer tracks to keep up with the other guys,” he says. “There was only two or three of
them, but those are the two or three that you’ve gotta beat to be a New Zealand champion.” His new car unleashes a lot more horse power and Ian says the modern technology makes driving it feel like you’re sitting on a Lazy Boy. “It just makes the car so much more responsive. Instead of me working really hard, I just sit back and drive it.” The speedway season begins with fireworks on October 29, but Ian will have to wait for his chance to unleash some fireworks of his own as the night is one of the mandatory stand-down nights for the super saloon class. But with three practices already under his belt, Ian will be heading off to Christchurch this weekend. He says the chance to host the New Zealand Championship will go along way in his bid to become the New Zealand champion. “When other drivers come to Nelson they really struggle. But for us, if you can drive here then you can drive anywhere in the country. It’s so small and it’s so fast. It’s our ultimate goal. We will get there one day, it’s just a matter of when.”

Public Notice of Right to Demand a Poll on Electoral System
Garage Sale – Lake Rotoiti Community Hall
On 11 August 2011, the Tasman District Council decided to retain the First Past the Post (FPP) electoral system for the 2013 and 2016 local government triennial elections. This is the system that the Council has used in past elections for Council and community boards. Notice is given under section 28 (1) of the Local Electoral Act 2001, that electors of the Tasman District Council have the right to demand a poll on the electoral system to be used at the next two triennial general elections (2013 and 2016) of the Tasman District Council. The choice is between the First Past the Post (FPP) and the Single Transferable Vote (STV) electoral systems. Unless a poll determines otherwise, the FPP electoral system will continue to be used for the Tasman District Council. A valid demand for a poll must be: • made in writing; • signed by at least 5 percent of eligible electors of the Tasman District Council. This will require 1,690 elector signatures; • delivered to the office of the Tasman District Council, 189 Queen Street, Richmond, 7020 by Tuesday 28 February 2012. Every elector who signs a demand must also set out in it his or her full name and the address for which he or she is qualified as an elector of the Tasman District Council. For further information, please phone Lloyd Kennedy, Electoral Officer Ph. 03 543 8434.
