School library demolished
Henley School’s leaky library is being demolished and a new one built after the Ministry of Education decided “that it will be more economical to rebuild the building than to repair it”. The library was closed last term and repair work stopped after inspections found that about 90 per cent of the framing timber in the ten-year-old, $984,000 building was damaged by water. Last week, the minis-
try’s head of the education infrastructure service, Kim Shannon, confirmed that the library will be demolished and replaced with a newly-designed building. “We have immediately started to dismantle the old library building and expect to be able to reuse some of the materials such as doors and window fittings in the new building,” Kim says. “The old building will be removed by Christmas and the

Businesses decorate shop windows for Christmas

The girls at Clear Cuts hair salon are taking an unusual approach to this year’s Richmond Unlimited Decorate 2 Win competition, aimed at brightening up shop windows for Christmas. Instead of the usual Christmas trees, tinsel and decorations, Christine Ruddick and her senior stylists, Tracy Bovey, Julie Blenkiron and Alison Hatch, feature in a Christmas mural that has been painted on their shop window. Dressed as rather naughty-looking Santa’s helpers, the girls at Clear Cuts say they are getting a lot of comments about their risque display. “Last year we had dancing elves painted in the window so we wanted to do something a little different again this year,” Christine says. “We sent the signwriter a photo of us all dressed up in our party dresses and this is what he came up with it’s a bit naughty and we are getting a lot of comments from our customers.” Richmond Unlimited’s Kim Quint says they always get a good response to the competition which is aimed at “creating a Christmassy feel and encouraging people to go into the shops”. Kim says the final judging will take place on December 17. First prize is $1000 worth of advertising with either the Waimea Weekly or Nelson Weekly and $500 cash, second prize is $500 cash and third prize is $250 cash.
