School library demolished

Henley School’s leaky library is being demolished and a new one built after the Ministry of Education decided “that it will be more economical to rebuild the building than to repair it”. The library was closed last term and repair work stopped after inspections found that about 90 per cent of the framing timber in the ten-year-old, $984,000 building was damaged by water. Last week, the minis-

try’s head of the education infrastructure service, Kim Shannon, confirmed that the library will be demolished and replaced with a newly-designed building. “We have immediately started to dismantle the old library building and expect to be able to reuse some of the materials such as doors and window fittings in the new building,” Kim says. “The old building will be removed by Christmas and the

ment initiatives such as improved lighting. The internal layout will remain the same.” Kim says the ministry has reached a commercial settlement with the contractor who constructed the building. “The matter has been resolved and is subject to strict terms of confidentiality so we are unable to comment on the cause of the

The girls at Clear Cuts hair salon are taking an unusual approach to this year’s Richmond Unlimited Decorate 2 Win competition, aimed at brightening up shop windows for Christmas. Instead of the usual Christmas trees, tinsel and decorations, Christine Ruddick and her senior stylists, Tracy Bovey, Julie Blenkiron and Alison Hatch, feature in a Christmas mural that has been painted on their shop window. Dressed as rather naughty-looking Santa’s helpers, the girls at Clear Cuts say they are getting a lot of comments about their risque display. “Last year we had dancing elves painted in the window so we wanted to do something a little different again this year,” Christine says. “We sent the signwriter a photo of us all dressed up in our party dresses and this is what he came up with it’s a bit naughty and we are getting a lot of comments from our customers.” Richmond Unlimited’s Kim Quint says they always get a good response to the competition which is aimed at “creating a Christmassy feel and encouraging people to go into the shops”. Kim says the final judging will take place on December 17. First prize is $1000 worth of advertising with either the Waimea Weekly or Nelson Weekly and $500 cash, second prize is $500 cash and third prize is $250 cash.

Dental Council ‘put public at risk’ The dental licence of Dr Nicholas Smith should have been stripped years earlier, according to a prominent member of the Nelson dental profession, who says members of the public were put at risk. Dr Nicholas Smith closed his Stoke clinic this month after years of complaints and a conviction for fraud. His business went into liquidation owing $164,948 to patients who had pre-paid for dental work, staff, the IRD and other unsecured creditors. But one member of the dental profession, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, says the Dental Council should have stepped in years earlier, and blames it for putting the public at risk. “They really haven’t done the public any favours. They haven’t done the

profession any favours or Nic any favours, really. “Given the long list of issues over the years, they’ve got an obligation under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act to protect the public, and there’s a general feeling amongst the dental community that they haven’t fulfilled their obligation.” The Dental Council did not renew Dr Smith’s practicing licence and he handed in his registration at the start of this month. Liquidator, Geoff Falloon, says another dental practise has bought the former clinic. His liquidator report shows 38 patients are owed money, including one for $3100. It also shows the shareholders bank account is overdrawn by $550,349.

issues or how much the new building will cost.” Henley principal, John Armstrong says he is delighted with the ministry’s decision and pleased that it has acted “decisively and quickly” to resolve the problem. John says the library is a key building at their school and they can’t wait until the new one is completed. “I’m very satisfied with the decision to rebuild from the ground-up with a new design that resolves all the watertightness issues. The new concept design has pitched roofs and eaves and I’m very happy about that. “We’re also happy that they’ll be using the existing concrete pad and floor plan because that worked very well for us. Richmond shopper wins $2500 in Mall vouchers Simon Bloomberg Richmond shopper, Sharon Riordan, had a great start to the week when she found out she had won $2500 worth of Richmond Mall vouchers as the first part of the Shop ‘n Win competition. Shop ‘n Win is run by the Waimea Weekly and Richmond Mall and gives shoppers the chance to win $2500 worth of mall vouchers. They also have a chance to win the big prize of $5000 for Christmas when they shop at the mall and participating businesses in Richmond. Thousands of shoppers have already entered the fiveweek promotion and on Monday, mall manager, Belinda de Clercq, phoned Sharon to tell her she had won the vouchers. “I couldn’t believe it when Belinda phoned,” Sharon says. “I think I said ‘I can’t believe it’ three times - I was so excited and happy. “Then I phoned my husband, Andrew, and he said he couldn’t believe it either. He thought I was joking.” Sharon says the vouchers will make her Christmas shopping a lot easier although she may use some of the $2500 to buy a new lounge suite. It was one of three forms she had filled out there, along with another seven at stores around Richmond. She says she will have no problem using the vouchers in stores in the mall “because I do most of my shopping there anyway”. Belinda says Shop ‘n Win is proving even more popular than last year. “Every day I collect around five or six shopping bags full of entry forms. It’s

Waimea Weekly advertising manager, Sue Davies, says they are “well on track to beat last year’s record number of entries of 73,000” with the mall and another 32 stores around Richmond being overwhelmed with entries. Sue says the prize of $5000 will be drawn the week after the competition closes on Sunday, November 30 and she encourages shoppers to head into the participating businesses so they can fill out an entry form and be in to win.

The mother-of-three who is owed $600 by struck-off Stoke dentist Nicholas Smith has had her dental bill covered by another dentist. Stacey Gribble had been paying the Stoke Dental Centre by automatic payment until there was enough in her account to get treatment. But, when she called the clinic two weeks ago, she was told it had closed and Stacey later found out the business had been liquidated. She told Waimea Weekly last week that the money was a year’s worth of payments and that it was a huge blow for her young family. But within hours of publishing, the Weekly received a call from Gentle Dental owner Maxine Noar, offering $600 of credit to Stacey. “I read it in your paper and I just felt so upset. Corkill just $19k away from new lungs After seven months and $81,000, Mike Corkill is just $19,000 away from the new set of lungs he needs to survive. Mike has a pulmonary hypertension, a rare and incurable lung disorder. To live, he needs a new set of lungs, but the treatment isn’t available in New Zealand because there aren’t enough donors. So Mike, a father of five, needs to raise $100,000 to pay for a transplant and treatment in India. He started his quest for the cash in April with a story in Waimea Weekly.

NEWS in brief

Since then, the community has rallied to raise more than $80,000, much of that from Nelsonians and local businesses. Richmond Mall allowed Mike and his family to collect money in the mall for several months, and the Richmond Lions also donated $2500 to Mike’s cause. They are just two examples of the many groups that have got in behind Mike and his family. There have also been raffles, a quiz night and several other fundraising ideas, including a Givealittle fundraising page. Mike says with the target so close and

medical clearance to fly, he and his wife have applied for passports and visas to India, with a tentative plan to fly out in mid-January. But first he needs the final $19,000. The family have run out of ideas to get over the final hurdle and Mike is hoping for support from the community. “It’s been a big effort and really hard, but we’re so close.” To donate to Mike’s cause visit www. givealittle.co.nz/cause/mikecorkill appeal or donate to a bank account set up for the cause, 38-9006-009368303.

Waimea College student, Holly KentJohnston, is losing her hair next month so she can help someone regain the locks they have lost as a result of medical treatment. Holly, 15, has been growing her hair for over a year so she can donate it to a nationwide charity, Pantene Beautiful Lengths, that makes wigs for women who have lost their through medical treatment. She plans to go to McIntyre Hair in Richmond on December 3 when Cherie McIntyre will cut off her hair so that it can be used to help make a wig. “My hair was long anyway but I stopped going to the hairdresser over a year ago when I decided to do this,” Holly says. “Your hair has to be at least eight inches long so you have to grow it for a while it takes eight ponytails to make one wig so they need a lot of hair.” Holly says she decided to donate her hair to the charity after seeing it advertised on television. She also planned to get all her hair cut off at the same time to raise funds for Child Cancer Foundation after the daughter of a family friend was diagnosed with leukemia. “They are both good causes and I also wanted to make a statement because so many people are concerned about looks and beauty and fashion when beauty

Car parking made easier Christmas shoppers won’t have any problems getting carparks around Richmond this year thanks to a joint-initiative by the Richmond Mall and Richmond Unlimited. Last year, carparks around the Richmond central business district were at a premium as people started flocking into the town for their Christmas shopping. But that won’t be a problem this Christmas with the mall and Richmond Unlimited renting a temporary parking lot in the A and P Showgrounds and hiring a shuttle service to provide free transport into Richmond. Although the carpark and shuttle will be used by all retailers in the Richmond Mall so that 150 carparks can be freed up for shoppers, mall manager, Belinda de Clercq says all retailers and shoppers are welcome to use the free service. “Last year, we asked all our retailers to stay out of the mall carpark to make room for customers but but then they parked in residential areas which created problems,” Belinda says. “I was getting about 15 calls a day from residents

complaining about the cars - we even had a call from the Meals On Wheels people saying they couldn’t find parks outside the homes. “That’s why we hired the A and P Showgrounds for all the retailers. It’s a good solution for the shoppers, the residents and the retailers.” Richmond Unlimited vice-chair, Toni Lane says parking is always a “huge problem” leading up to Christmas and they are pleased to be part of the new joint-initiative. “I used to park out the back so I know what it’s like at this time of year. This is a simple, practical solution to the problem.” Belinda says the entrance to the temporary carpark in the A and P Showgrounds is adjacent to the croquet club on Lower Queen St. The shuttle service will start this Monday and finish on December 24 with the shuttle running continuously between the carpark and the bus stop in Sundial Square from 7am to 9am and 5pm to 6.30pm Monday to Saturday and from 8am to 10am and 4pm to 5.30pm on Sunday.

The Richmond Kindergarten’s front garden is looking better than ever, thanks to Bunning’s Warehouse. Earlier this month, the Waimea Weekly reported that three large pot plants had been stolen from the front of the Florence St kindy. Nick Rose from Bunnings read the story and decided they could help out and last Tuesday he turned up with some staff, a spade and a load of replacement flaxes and strawberry plants for the garden. “We read the story and

Tapawera volunteers recognised Simon Bloomberg

The Tapawera Volunteer Firebrigade recognised the long service of four of its members with a medal presentation in Tapawera earlier this month. Bryce Porthouse headed the list with 19 years of service followed by the brigade’s chief, Dean Millar, deputy chief, Michael Oakly, and Martin O’Connor who all received their medals for 13 years service. The ceremony was officiated by Richmond fire chief, Ralph Lonsdale, and attended by Wakefield police officer Marty Tutton and retired police officer Peter Cobbledick, who have worked closely with the Tapawera brigade’s 14 volunteers. Dean says Bryce is a valuable member of the brigade and thoroughly deserved his medal. “Bryce does everything from driving to pump operating and could easily run the brigade if he wanted. He really knows his way around all the back roads and valleys here too because he used to work in the forestry so that’s a big asset for us.” Dean says both Michael and Martin are vastly experienced fire fighters who spent time with other brigades before joining Tapawera. “We are very lucky to have volunteers like Michael and Martin. We have good numbers at the moment as well as good volunteers,” Dean says. Dean says he joined the brigade almost 15 years ago after an unscheduled visit by fire fighters. “Soon after we moved to Tapawera we had a small fire in our washing machine and the brigade came around and put

I took a box of beer around to the station to say thanks and they said ‘you’d better join’ so I did - I couldn’t really say no after they put the fire out.” Dean says the last 15 years have been eventful with the brigade attending a number of major call-outs, including the big vegetation fire on Dry Weather Road in November 2009 that razed one property and eight hectares of scrub and forest. They also helped battle a series of forest fires started by an arsonist in 2012 and fight a factory fire at Nelson Honey near Quinney’s Bush. “We are also close to State Highway 6 so we attend quite a few motor vehicle accidents between Spooners and the Hope Saddle. It’s not a nice part of the job.’ Dean says they have enough members at present and are sending two of their new recruits, Wayne Jones and Michelle Morgan, to Christchurch for eight days basic training. Dean says Michelle is one

of five female volunteers on the brigade that also includes Natasha Glenderran, who is the reverend at the Tapawera Community Church. “Luckily we have only had one call out on a Sunday since Natasha joined,” Dean says. “The siren went off when she was in church and she wasn’t sure what to do. “She stood there and all her parishioners looked at her and then said ‘you’d better get going’ and she went. But we’d send her back to church if we didn’t need her.” The brigade also made a presentation to the volunteers’ families at the ceremony to recognise their contribution. Volunteer, Sylvia Tovizi says Tapawera station “puts a high value on our families and recognise that when our pages go off and we just drop and go, we leave our partners and children behind to carry on without us”.

Eliminating potential double commission liability for home sellers Real estate agents are being recommended by the Real Estate Agents Authority (REAA) and the Real Estate Institute of NZ (REINZ) to include a set of standard clauses in their listing agreements to clarify the situation when an owner wishes to change agencies. It’s not always certain what notice period an owner needs to give or whether they remain liable to pay a commission to a previous agent. A key feature of the new standard clauses is that when a vendor is moving from one agency to another the first agent will only be entitled to a commission if a sale and purchase agreement (even if conditional) is signed by the parties during the term of the agency. If the agency ends and the agent does not have a signed sale and purchase agreement they will not be entitiled to any commission. Instead, if the new agent concludes the sale, even to someone the former agent introduced, they will be entitled to the commission.

Lydia Heyward Licensed Real Estate Agent (REAA 2008)

Another key feature of the standard clauses limits the agent’s right to claim a commission if the vendor sells privately to a purchaser previously introduced. This right lapses after six months of the agency agreement ending. Do check the REAA’s website which has a list of real estate agencies that have committed to include these standard clauses in their agency agreements.

Anglers get 100% hit rate Young anglers enjoyed a 100 per cent catch rate at the annual Sport Fishing For Youth Charitable Trust event, held at the Waimea River Park Fishing Ponds last Sunday. Nelson Marlborough Fish and Game officer, Lawson Davey says “it has been the most successful day we have had as far as catch rates go, everyone has had a great day and learnt a lot”. The ponds were developed by the trust with the aim of introducing young anglers to the joys of fishing in a natural setting. Three hundred and twenty trout and 200 salmon were supplied by NMIT and North Canterbury Fish and Game and released into the ponds last week. Fish and Game supplied all of the rods and equipment to help max-

imise the opportunities for the children, aged between six and 16, to land a fish. All 62 participants were given tuition and help by experienced anglers for one hour timeslots. They learnt basic casting skills, how to tie a fly, land, kill, clean and gut a fish. Not only did they learn skills on how to fish, they were also given recipes and advice on how to cook their catch. The Sport Fishing For Youth Charitable Trust arranges fundraising to purchase more fish for the upcoming year and helps with organisation of the day. Further fishing opportunities will be available on November 22 and 23. Registrations will be on a first -come first-served basis through Fish and Game on 544 6382.

Wishing tree set up for donated presents Richmond shoppers have the opportunity to make this Christmas a lot happier for families in need around Nelson and Tasman after Kmart launched its Wishing Tree Appeal. Kmart has been using its stores throughout Australia and New Zealand as a gift collection point for welfare groups for 20 years and last Thursday the new Richmond store launched its Wishing Tree Appeal. Kmart’s Clare Heine says people can place gifts for people of all ages beside the Wishing Tree which is set-up in their store. The gifts will be collected by the Salvation Army up until Christmas Eve and distributed to needy families.

Wedding theme for church garden trail Monique Bergman Holy Trinity Anglican Church held their third biennial garden trail last Saturday with the church on the hill opened up to include a wedding-themed display. Fourteen wedding dresses, dated from 1947 to 2004, were exhibited in the historic building and all gowns were donated by people connected with the church. Childhood sweethearts, Beverley and Jim Payne from Nelson, proudly displayed the gown Beverley wore at their 1962 wedding. The dress was lovingly-made nearly 50 years ago by Jim’s cousin, a dressmaker, as a gift to the couple. A display by talented floral artist, Roseanne Armstrong, accompanied the dresses and it is hoped the display will attract more weddings at the church in the future. Three hundred tickets were sold to the garden trail which included nine gardens throughout Richmond and Hope. Devonshire teas, refreshments, raffles and stalls were on offer, with all proceeds going towards a new parish multi-functional community centre.

Duncan Garner wrote about how great our region is. Do you agree? He must have had a boat to be able to say the fishing was good. For us poor people, you have you drive miles to find good fishing spots on land that is accessible to the public. Personally, I think Coromandel has it all if you are after lifestyle, good weather, and cheap housing. Also, people know road rules up there. Yvonne Walker.

Love it, never been happier. Relaxed and cheaper lifestyle, people great accepting and friendly. First

time I really can call a place home. Dave Trigg. Doesn’t matter where we end up. Home is what you make it! I tried living away from Nelson once. Never again! I love it here. My family and I live in the Vic. 5 minute walk to town, I drive to work, 11 minutes, plus 10 minute drive to Tahuna Beach, give or take. Live, Love, Laugh sums it up pretty well, I’d say. Sharon Patterson. I love living in Nelson, but agree that Nelson is very cliquey, and harder than normal to make friends. The weather is amazing. Bonnie Geiger. Terrible wages, unfortunately. Ryan de Garnham. Cheap housing? Try paying for that on sunshine wages!!! Lisa De Gray. I love Nelson. So pleased to be back after more than a decade away. Cliquey is a perception some have, but the truth is it’s a friendly place and a lot of people have been here their whole lives. I am the 6th generation of my family to be here and so I have a large base of friends as family. The more the merrier has always been the motto. There are probably less places to meet

new people, though. Anyone new to Nelson and looking for new friends, I’m friendly. Amanda Cuff. Bugger, the secrets out. Shhhhh about Motueka, the friendliest town in the region. Marion Cross. Came back to live after 30 years away. Always knew I would. Great life style and weather. Found people very friendly. Life is what you make it. Julie Roberts. I love Nelson. It will always be home, no matter where we live Nelson is home in my heart. Living in Mandurah WA at present, also a small coastal city. Lovely, but will never replace Nelson in my heart. Sharon Fisher. I am on a sabbatical in the UK for a year, and am reminded many times a day what a great place Nelson is and how much I miss it!! Nelson does need help with jobs... most of us create our own but what a place. Stephanie Drewery. Successful Melbourne Cup

Club Waimea held a very successful Melbourne Cup day with over 100 members and guests enjoying the food, the company and the races. Greeted at the door with a free glass of bubbly and strawberry, guests and members were treated to an excellent selection of finger food, enjoyed some humorous spot prizes and to top it all off, there were no worries about drink driving as the Club Waimea bus was running from early afternoon until the event finished. Overall a great day was had by all who participated. Top right: Hilary Pitcher, Jacqui Barratt, Chanel McGlashen, Milli Helliwell and Irene Muirhead. “Every good thing comes to an end.” It is with mixed emotions that I accept this reality, as my appointment as Waimea Methodist Parish minister winds down, and I write my final ‘Just a Thought’ article. My eight years in this position has flashed by, and it’s not just a sign of my advancing years! Engaging in ministry within the Richmond -Wakefield area certainly has been very rewarding. I have treasured this district’s God- given natural assets and accessible and attractive man-made facilities. But it is the people who make or break any place, and here is no exception. Returning to ‘The Promised Land’ after 17 years absence has enabled me to reconnect with many people from my past, and to build new relationships, especially within the churches, but also within the wider community. The two Methodist congregations I have served in Richmond and Wakefield have enriched my life with their gifts of friendship, Paul Tregurtha, mutual support, and comWaimea Methmitment to their faith and odist Parish. church. I will certainly miss the pastoral relationships I have been allowed to develop with this group of people in particular when I retire mid-January 2015. I leave too with fond memories of my colleagues in ministry whom I have met through the active local Ministers Association. I firmly believe the church does provide a special place of belonging, which is so important in today’s world where people for many reasons can become isolated. Our church congregations offer a true community, enriched by their diversity of age, personality, life experiences, knowledge, depth of faith and spiritual understanding, gifts and talents. But above all, church congregations invariably accept, respect, and value their members, and display a deeper level of caring and sharing than in many secular organisations. That is because of the unity they have through their commitment to Jesus and his life and teachings. I believe that level of fellowship is the special ingredient that will ensure our church communities will endure in this increasingly secular age, along with a strong desire by their membership to work together, to serve your community in a manner which is relevant to the needs. I wish them well in their future ministry and mission as I sign off for the last time. And may God continue to bless all who continue to read this weekly column.

Nelson Lakes National Park and Rainbow Conservation Area - Rat and Possum Control Operation The Department of Conservation (DOC), as part of its Battle for our Birds programme, intends to apply cereal pellet baits containing sodium fluoroacetate (1080) in Nelson Lakes National Park and Rainbow Conservation Area. The pest control is being undertaken to protect native species from rats and possums.

Description of the area: Approximately 13,500 ha made up the western side of the St Arnaud Range adjacent to Lake Rotoiti extending south to include the Travers Valley and the side valleys (Hukere, Hopeless and Cupola) and the remote East Sabine Valley up to an approximate altitude of 1600m above sea level within the Nelson Lakes National Park and a small part of the eastern side of the St Arnaud Range within the Rainbow Conservation Area. Areas affected include the St Arnaud Range Track, Loop Track, Honeydew Track, Lakehead Track, Lakeside Track (south of Whiskey Falls), Travers Track, Cascade Track, Hopeless Creek Track, Cupola Track, and the Sabine Track (between West Sabine Hut and Travers Saddle).

Method of control: Cereal baits containing the pesticide 1080 will be distributed by helicopter over the above area except for the area between the Loop Track and Honeydew Track and some land within 50 metres of the Lakehead and Lakeside Tracks which will be hand sown. The 1080 baits are cylindrical pellets approximately 2-3 cm long, cinnamon lures and dyed green. An application of nontoxic pre-feed baits was completed on 8 November 2014. Entry to all public walking tracks within the area will be restricted during and immediately following the 1080 operation until a track inspection is completed. This will be as soon as is practical and no longer than 24 hours after the operation. Warning signs will be placed at all normal points of entry to the area and at huts within the area immediately prior to the 1080 operation. Always remember when in the area: • DO NOT touch bait or bait bags • WATCH CHILDREN at all times • DO NOT eat animals from this area • DO NOT allow DOGS access to animal carcasses (noting dogs are prohibited in the Nelson Lakes National Park). Observe these rules whenever you see warning signs placed at the public access ways in the above area. Please call the National Poisons Centre for details regarding sodium fluoroacetate (1080) – Ph. 0800 764 766.

Commencement Date Toxin operation will take place on or after 18 November 2014. The actual date of the operation will depend on the availability of periods of suitable weather.

For further information contact the Department of Conservation’s Rotoiti/Nelson Lakes Visitor Centre on View Road, St Arnaud ph: 03 5211806.

A detailed map of the treatment area may be viewed at the Rotoiti/Nelson Lakes Visitor Centre (8am to 4.30pm Monday to Sunday) or see the DOC website www.doc.govt.nz (search: battle for our birds nelson lakes). The operation leader is John Wotherspoon at the above address.

Adventurer and Air New Zealand captain, Mike Allsop, with pupils from Appleby School last week. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

Adventurer helps raise funds for Appleby School Adventurer and Air New Zealand captain, Mike Allsop, had plenty of inspirational messages for the pupils at Appleby School last Friday. Mike, who was in Nelson to speak at a fundraiser for the school and a Pinnacle programme event, told the children to dream big, make a strong plan and above all, “work hard and never, ever give up”. And Mike wasn’t just talking the talk because he has used those guidelines to reach some incredible heights in a life full of achievement, adventure and excitement. The Auckland-based 737 pilot has climbed Mt Everest, run seven marathons in seven continents in seven days raising $75,000 for the charity KidsCan, run a high altitude marathon around Mt Everest and narrowly escaped death, once in a plane crash into the Pacific and a second time outrunning an avalanche in Peru. Mike says he learned his first, and probably most important lesson, to work hard and never, ever give up, at the age of 13. That lesson helped him make the transformation from a “very av-

erage” school student into an Air New Zealand captain and then use that career as a platform for his extraordinary adventures. “When I was 13, I was very average at school so I found the smartest kid in school and asked him how long he was going to study for the maths exam. He said ‘40 minutes” so I studied for 40 minutes and only got 46 per cent. “I was so angry with myself I studied for four hours for the next exam and got 96 per cent. That’s when I learned that it was hard work that gets results and that lesson helped me get my private pilot’s licence and later become an airline pilot.” At the end of his talk, Mike answered questions from the pupils, including Do you know Bear Grylls? Yes, I’ve met him three times. How did you learn to ride a plane? I think that’s fly a plane. How hard is it to breathe on Mt Everest? Very hard, you actually need oxygen masks and when I was near the top of Everest my oxygen ran out and I collapsed and my Sherpa replaced my oxygen bottle and saved my life.

High winds batter fishermen Five fishermen were rescued off Cable Bay on Saturday as high winds rocked their boat, making it too dangerous for them to get back to Port Nelson. The Nelson Coastguard, police and the surf lifesavers were all involved in the rescue.

The five men went fishing on a 6.5 metre runabout, but high winds in the afternoon left them unable to get out of Cable Bay. Graeme Richard, from Nelson Coastguard, says police called them and the Surf Lifesavers into help with the rescue, as

they were heading onto rocks near Cable Bay. The coastguard and lifesavers took three people off the boat so they could drive back to Nelson and pick up the trailer. Then a local farmer loaned them his tractor so they could pull the boat to shore at around 5.30pm.

Champion rider hoping for more success Combined Ecofest

and Growables a hit

Monique Bergman Reporter

monique@waimeaweekly.co.nz Jaime Rushbrooke from Wai-iti is hoping to repeat her winning Blenheim A&P Show Champion Side Saddle Mount award at this weekend’s Golden Edge Nelson A&P Show. At only 16, Jamie is one of the youngest riders amongst an experienced field in the very technical event. An original 1920s saddle has been hired from a Blenheim-based collector of side saddles and she will wear an old-fashioned style jacket and apron based on the same era. It takes three people around one hour to prepare the rider’s dress and fit the saddle to the horse. Historical side-saddle riding, uses a special type of saddle which allows a rider to sit aside rather than astride a horse. Developed as a way for women in skirts to ride a horse in a modest fashion, it is very different from modern day equestrian events. Points are awarded for correct dress, how safe and smooth the horse rides and how elegant the rider is. In addition to the side-saddle, Jaime will compete in several equestrian events throughout the weekend. Kristy King-Turner from Pigeon Valley is chief groom and owner of the horses Jaime will ride, she spends around 20 hours a week training and preparing the horses for competition.

Looking forward to competing in the equestrian events at this week’s Nelson A&P Show, from left, Kristy King-Turner from Pigeon Valley and Jaime Rushbrooke from Wai-iti with their horses. Photo: Monique Bergman. “The side-saddle is a very technical event, it is hard to do it well, not only is Jaime the youngest competing, the horse she is riding, Rainbow Cottonwood, is new to the event at 19 years, which is quite unique,” says Kristy. Jaime would like to take her side-saddle riding further and is hoping to compete in the Horse of The Year competition, the biggest horse show in the Southern Hemisphere, in Hastings, March 2015. As well as the equestrian events, the show will feature terrier racing, along with the more traditional carnival, dog trials, shearing, wood chopping, animal nursery and judging of sheep, cows, alpacas and poultry competitions.

There will also be photography, wine and beer, handcraft, horticulture and baking exhibits along with market and trade stalls, plus entertainment by Madsen promotions throughout the day. The Nelson A & P Show will be held at Richmond Park Showgrounds from 9.30am to 5pm on Saturday, November 22 and 9.30am to 4pm on Sunday, November 23. Entry costs $15 adults, $25 family and $5 children, aged five to 16 years. Pre-purchase tickets are available from Richmond Mall, More FM, Bowater Toyota, Nelson & Motueka and Haven Mazda, $10 for adults and $20 for a family. The side-saddle event will be held at 10am on Saturday November 22.

Founders Heritage Park was a hive of activity for the new combined Growables featuring Ecofest on Sunday, as the public flocked to see the latest and greatest in environmentally friendly solutions for home and garden. Around 4000 people came along and organiser of Growables featuring Ecofest, Ali Lawley, says each have a strong following, but combining the two events, as well as a new venue, was a great decision for both exhibitors and the general public. “The general feedback that we got from the Ecofest exhibitors was that they were really pleased with the new location. “The event has historically been at the Trafalgar Centre, but the overall feel this year was a lot more relaxed and a lot more festival-like,” she says.

Muhammad Ali once told the world that he could “float like a butterfly”. But as Nelson’s eight newest boxers were unveiled on Friday night, the only butterflies around were located firmly in their stomachs. The eight were announced at the “After the Bell” fundraiser on Friday as the first confirmed fighters for the Fight 4 Victory charity boxing event, which will be held at Saxton Stadium on April 4, next year. The date for the next Fight 4 Victory was announced in Waimea Weekly last month and, since then, organisers Barry Galbraith and Paul Hampton have been inundated with emails from peoSergeants Justin Carter and Steffan James stare each othple keen to take part. er down at the After the Bell fundraiser at the RutherBut the pair have had to carefully partford Hotel on Friday. Nelson slotcar drag racers, Chris Narbey and Tony Cook, may have recorded the fastest runs at the national slotcar drag racing champs at the Brightwater track on Saturday, but it was their clubmate Clive Hall who provided the most spectacular action. Tony won the Nitro Class, reaching speeds of up to 140 kilometres an hour on the 30m track, while Chris took on the Pro-Modifieds at the meeting that attracted 18 racers in seven classes. Rangiora’s Kerry Radford also had a successful day winning the Pro-Stock, Box Stock and Hard Body classes to accumulate the most points. But Tony says Clive Hall stole the show when he “destroyed his car when it flew off the end of the track and hit the wall” in the most spectacular crash of the day. “He was still picking up the pieces the next day,” Tony says. “It was a massive crash.” Tony says the slotcars are raced in the same classes to real drag cars depending on their body type, weight and motor. The fastest nitro dragsters can reach speeds of up to 160kmh and cover the 30m track in 0.4seconds. “Anything goes in the nitros which is the fastest class. My car does 88,000 revs per minute and up to 100 miles an hour but I was only hitting 85 and 0.5seconds on Saturday.” Tony says the Brightwater Slot Racing Club also has a circuit racing track and holds regular meetings on Tuesdays from 7pm. be joining with practitioners from throughout the country in celebrating World Acupuncture Awareness Week (WAAW). It was decided at the 2013 meeting of the executive of the World Federation of Acupuncture Societies (WFAS) that the week closest to 16 – 22 November would be marked every year as World Acupuncture Awareness Week and this is the first time it has been celebrated here in New Zealand. As in so many things, it would appear that New Zealand is again leading the way by planning a wide variety of events from one end of the country to the other. Whilst acupuncture has an extensive history in countries such as China, Korea and Japan, it is only more recently that it has been widely used in the more Western countries. Acupuncture is well established here in New Zealand, with members of the New Zealand Register of Acupuncturists, which was founded in 1977, having been recognised as Treatment Providers by ACC since 1990. Whilst acupuncture can be used to treat many different conditions, this year in New Zealand the focus for WAAW is on the treatment of four main conditions – migraine, lower back pain, depression and period pain. There are increasing numbers of robust scientific studies showing the effectiveness of acupuncture treatment

puncturists have completed at least four years of full time study either here or overseas and must complete at least 20 hours of continuing education every year in order to maintain their Annual Practicing Certificate. Acupuncture is not yet a registered profession in New Zealand but members of NZRA are bound by the rules and code of ethics of the organisation. Those New Zealanders who studied acupuncture in the past would have needed to travel overseas as there was no course of study offered in this country. It is now possible to complete a bachelor and masters programme through the New Zealand School of Acupuncture and TCM in either Wellington or Auckland. Both courses are NZQA approved. A recent study, completed by NZRA member, Dan Jakes as part of his masters thesis through Canterbury University, found that people who were seek acupuncture treatment do so for two main reasons - dissatisfaction with their conventional care or as a result of their specific health beliefs which cause them to seek out the more holistic treatment provided by the acupuncturist. Perhaps it is time to consider acupuncture treatment? There are 11 members of NZRA here in the Nelson Tasman region – why not give one of them a call? Business Update. Adv.

Big turn out for judo comp

More than 50 people threw each other around a Nelson judo dojo on Sunday, as part of the Central Districts closed championships. The champs involved 53 people from Nelson, Marlborough and the West Coast at the Wakatu Industrial Estate. President of the Nelson Judo Club, Lindsay Kelly, says it was thrilled with the turn out. “We were blown away. The sport is really growing and Nelson and Motueka both entered big numbers.” The event was open to all ages and weight classes from kids through to adults.

Bridget Budget answers your questions

Q: My partner just found out that I

haven’t been paying all ours bills; I’m afraid to tell her that I’ve been spending our money at the pokies. What do I do now? A: It is important to recognise when gambling is no longer just for fun and may be starting to cause harm. The sooner you get help, the easier it is to get on top of it. We can help you with a plan to manage your money that will work for you. Depending on whether you would like to cut back on your gambling, or stop altogether. Here are some suggestions:  Decide what you can afford to spend on gambling and stick

to it by withdrawing only that amount in cash.  Set up your banking so your pay is split into different accounts: e.g. one for bills (paid by automatic payment) and one for groceries and spending (etfpos).  When gambling, leave bank cards at home; or give your cards to your partner or someone you trust.  Ask someone else to help manage your money.

Tapawera athlete, Chris Brake, showed he is in top form, equalling his personal best and the Tasman Centre record in the high jump at the Athletics Nelson twilight meeting at Saxton Field last Wednesday. Chris cleared 2.03 metres before narrowly missing out at 2.06m to equal his best jump, recorded at the national secondary schools champs in Hamilton last year. It is only the second time he has jumped two metres at Saxton Field since clearing the magical mark on the track in November last year. Ironically, Chris will not be able to take that good form into any upcoming competitions because of a clause in a US college athletics scholarship he is negotiating. “I was hoping for anything over 1.95 metres tonight so I’m over the moon about jumping 2.03,” Chris says. “I’ve been really fatigued lately because of all the travel and work so I wasn’t expecting too much. “But I’ve got nothing planned in terms of meetings because of the scholarship. I can’t say which college it’s with yet because we are still finalising things but
