Kmart to open in Richmond Phillip Rollo

Kmart has all but confirmed it is coming to Richmond in a move that is sure to bring more shoppers into the town. The move will make it the first major business to sign onto the development project owned by Gibbon’s Construction. A spokesperson from the Australian retail giant said “Kmart is close to finalising an agreement with a developer regarding the site at 184 – 186 Queen Street, Richmond” and that “Kmart would like to bring its great

everyday low prices closer to the Nelson and Tasman communities.” Gibbons refused to comment on the statement but both parties say further details were likely to be announced in the coming weeks. Richmond Unlimited chairman David Hill says any new development, especially at its proposed site, is going to be good for Richmond. “One of the keys to Richmond’s success is its concentration of businesses within the CBD.” It is unknown when Kmart or any other businesses would open at the site. Surprise gifts for sick kids FROM PAGE 1 “I think everyone’s been quite overwhelmed by it, particularly when people are in here with sick kids, to know that someone out there, a young guy, cared so much is just fantastic.” But Waimea Weekly was able to track down the man who said he just wanted to do something nice. Each card was handwritten by the man and read: “Merry Christmas, get well soon” and was signed “Shayne”. Local mother Felicity Watson says the gift brought her to tears. “It’s such a stressful time when you’re in hospital with a young baby, and when the nurse came in with this, I just burst into tears straight away. It’s so nice, such a nice thing for someone to do.” She says she is planning to use the

voucher to buy something that her son Decklyn will be able to keep for a number of years. “When he grows up I want him to be able to look at it and know that someone cared about him when he was so young.” Sherryl says most of the mothers had a similar reaction to Felicity. “Most were really overwhelmed, it meant a lot to the families.” The man says he came up with the idea while selling an old car on Trademe, he said in the auction that the money raised would go to charity and decided to give it to sick children after hearing about the paediatric ward from a friend who is a trainee nurse. The car was bought for $300 and he then went to see Richmond Mall manager David Hill and said what he wanted to do. “I said I’m going to split this up into vouchers and give it to the

kids and he just said he’d match me dollar for dollar.” So thanks to the Mall $300 worth of vouchers turned into $600. Sherryl says staff at the hospital would like to say thank you to the man and let him know he made a difference this Christmas. “He’s restored our faith in humanity, especially for a guy his age. Young men get a lot of bad press but this was just great.” Felicity says the man is like a “Christmas angel”. “I want to say thank you to him, so hopefully he’ll read this and realise how much it meant to us.” When told of the reaction from the mothers, the man says it was what he was hoping for. “That’s definitely the sort of happiness that I wanted to get out of it. It was $20 for the kids for Christmas and hopefully they’ll get some enjoyment out of it.”

Chris Hollis and his daughter Jasmine, 13, stand in front of their Arbor-Lea Ave property that has been decked out with Christmas lights for this year’s Harcourts Light Up Nelson competition. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Lighting up town Thousands of dollars, hours and light bulbs have gone into brightening up this year’s Harcourts Light Up Nelson competition with a total of 17 houses participating. One of those entrants, Mark Logan of Telenius Rd in Spring Grove, has entered the competition each of the past four years and had previously decked his home with Christmas lights for eight years prior to that. “It’s something that you can do around home that really makes Christmas,” he says. Mark was unsure of the total amount of light bulbs around his house but estimated it to be close to 110,000. Because of the home’s loca-

tion in Spring Grove, it is easy to spot off the main road at night. Another entrant, Chris Hollis has only entered his Arbor-Lea Ave home for two years and worked on the design with his daughter Jasmine. Their home won best new entrant last year and its main feature includes a merry-go-round that the children can ride on. Chris “doesn’t like setting fire to money,” so decided to purchase Christmas lights instead of fireworks and the obsession grew from there. For a full list of entrants visit www.lightupnelson.co.nz.

Baku wins window competition The team at Baku on Queen St have taken home this year’s dress up your window competition run by Richmond Unlimited. For their efforts the staff have earned $1000, which will be divided up between them. Competition co-ordinator Kim Quint says the number of entries has really lifted the Christmas spirit in the town, which had been lacking weeks before the competition was judged. “They were one of the first ones that actually did decorate their shop window and because they have two windows, featuring items that can be bought in the store, it looked really unique and Janine Hepburn of Baku shows off the Christmas tree in the window that was very creative,” says Kim. The judging took place last week by a group of helped her store win $1000 cash. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

local businesspeople. Other businesses that picked up cash prizes were the Salvation Army and the Richmond Town Hall while Sassy’s, Just Incredible, Taylor’s We Love Shoes and Health 2000 came in for honourable mentions. This was the first time the competition has run and because of its success Kim was hopeful that it would continue. “The reason why we did it was that over the years Richmond tends not to get into the Christmas spirit. But it was fantastic to see just about every store participate, they got really behind it and the variety was huge.” Baku’s Janine Hepburn says the window was decorated by a group of staff members.

Meeting with minister would help Salisbury School ‘move forward’ Education Minister Hekia Parata wants to meet with the board of Salisbury School in January but they question why she would want to visit when the school has closed for the summer holidays. Last week the High Court ruled the minister’s decision to close Salisbury School as unlawful because it relied on the possibility of sending some girls to live at a boys’ special needs school in Christchurch. Hekia now wants to meet with Salisbury School but its board member Helen McDonnell says that should happen when the students are back. The Ministry of Education would not comment if it intended to pursue the closure of Salisbury School, re-directing the Waimea Weekly to a week old press release instead. Helen believes the school will remain open for all of 2013 but says there are no guarantees for a further year.

Bridget Budget answers your questions

Q: My children have been sick often this last winter and I have built up quite a debt at our doctors. I have been told that I need to pay the bill if we want to see the doctor again. Can a doctor refuse to see us if we are sick? A: If there is an arrangement in place to pay arrears, the doctor should not refuse to see you and your family.  Your doctor and medical practice provide a service that you pay for. When you enroll with a medical practice, you sign a contract and agree to certain conditions of payment: to pay after a visit with the doctor or nurse and to keep any debt below a certain level.  If you have not been able to pay, it is expected that you will talk to the practice manager about paying the debt off regularly. They will provide you with an automatic payment form and encourage you to keep up with payments, so you end up in credit. As in any situation when you break a payment contract, communication is the key!

New entrance completes upgrade

The Richmond Mall now looks like the top shopping centre it is, after the soft opening of its new main entrance, says manager David Hill. The entrance is part of a large upgrade that also saw the food court revamped with new furniture, tiles and the inclusion of some new retailers. The entrance, which was done by local building firm Coman Construction, was the Richmond Mall’s final large-scale upgrade for the year. Early next year the mall’s new brand will be formally unveiled. David says the upgrade was normal mall practice and

that he was overly happy with the results. “The entrance looks fantastic. It’s a credit to the builders especially and all of the sub-contractors.” The new entrance was constructed to “future proof ” the mall for later expansions over the next 20 years. “Number one rule of mall development is never box in your major tenants and this allows for future expansion for them. David says the increase of turnover, which is eight per cent higher than last year, and the increase of foot traffic, with more than 5,500,000 people walking through the doors each year, was another reason behind the significant upgrade.

Gr wing Things

With Robyn Hollis

By the time you read this column the last stages of panic will have set in. Have I bought enough ham? Did anyone order the turkey? Have you seen the decorations? You invited how many from work to join us because they were going to be on their own… Of course this does not happen in real life – just thought I would stir you up a little. In our little family things seem to be going along almost too smoothly, I keep waiting for something or someone to come out of the woodwork and really turn things upside down! I guess this Christmas will be mainly centred around a certain, just over one year old, little person, as it will be his first. The tree this year, is up at a much higher level than normal – hopefully it will stay put and yes, the lights are attached so little fingers cannot pull them off! All decorations are placed well out of reach but there will

WWJ

be plenty of wrapped things down at Benjamin level for him to tear into on the day. We will have four generations at our Christmas table which in itself, is very special, and we are all looking forward to some fun family time. We will also be thinking of our family in Ukraine and will Skype them on Christmas day. If you are stuck for some gift ideas you still have time to pop to the garden centre and buy a pot or two to The Pohutakawa or NZ Christmas tree. fill with basil, chives etc. These make a great gift – things do not have to cost the flavoured with rosemary, lemon zest, dill earth – a pot with one geranium or a large etc and tied with a pretty ribbon make a grade petunia will bloom and look good lovely gift. for many weeks – a bit of colourful gift Homemade pesto’s are always good gifts and I have a recipe here for broad bean wrap and you’re done. Tips

Thisks wee

• If you are going away and don’t have a neighbour who can water for you – invest in a timer so you do not come back to a sad and sorry garden. • Pots and tubs that can be moved should go into a shady part of the garden to conserve moisture – or again, a good neighbour always helps. • Keep picking flowers and harvesting veges for a continuous supply – keep sowing lettuce, beans, carrots, eggplants, corn, cucumbers, zucchini etc and mulch the vege garden with pea straw or compost to keep in the moisture. • Try to keep water off the leaves of the tomatoes-just water from the base if possible. • Keep picking and using your herbs so the fresh leaves keep coming as they have the best flavour.

Q& A

Q: I had a query from Julie who wants to know when is the best time to re-pot and divide her Cymbidium orchids. A: Cymbidium orchids are the toughest of the orchid family but still need some regular maintenance to keep them flowering and looking their best. They should be divided and re-potted every 2-4 years as soon as they have finished flowering. Cymbidiums get very full and tight in their pots so that they are literally bursting out! ‘Tis the season to be jolly… stay safe, be happy and have a wonderful Christmas. Best Regards to you all,

Robyn

Students with 100 per cent attendance get ride in helicopter: Nice:) 30 Motueka High Students were treated to a trip to Wellington, isn’t it great how the “GOOD” kids get something in return too!! Way to go local businesses, big thumbs up!! Nicala Dennis. That’s an awesome reward and a really nice way for someone to give a little something back. Lucky them!! Lisa De Gray. Good work, I think it’s awesome! Amiee Baker. Yeah and then they still go when sick and give it to the rest of kids! Fantastic. Lauren Saunders. Totally agree Lauren! I think that sucks the big one. You cant tell me that those kids went through the whole year without picking up a cold or flu or whatever. If they did they have out of this world immune systems. If its one thing that drives me crazy its kids going to school when they are sick and spreading it round. And schools rewarding them for it, and punishing those who stay at home and stop others catching it! Maree Dohmen.

Push to strengthen earthquake testing: I don’t understand why the government has taken so long with this proposal, it should have been done more than 10 years ago. We had all the warning signs that one day this would happen. Carmyn Hunt.

I am so happy this school is staying open it a good school I went there and it help me out lots and there are some cool teachers and staff who work there it is good news. Katrina Frances Pointon.

About time the government pulled their finger out. The school is a great asset to the wider community; it’s helped many girls and their families over the many years. A good win! Rachel Fleming.

Congratulations Salisbury School! Not just an achievement for the Board, but also girls, staff and families, and not to forget all the locals who support the students in work experience placements or after-school activities! Well done for fighting Salisbury School! Helen Wright.

Comp’s donations warmly welcomed

Marianne Hart Biggs is used to driving excited people around Nelson, but it’s usually on their wedding day not to see some Christmas lights. This year Marianne is offering to take groups of up to six on a tour of the houses taking part in this year’s Harcourts Light Up Nelson Christmas light competition. She decided to do the idea to help raise some money for the Nelson Hospice after a man enquired about hiring the old London taxi to take his kids on the Light Up Nelson tour. restaurant voucher. Co-owner Dawn Rameka-iti decided to run the competition because she wanted to support a worthy cause. “We wanted to do a promotion and wanted to combine it with the collection. I rung the Salvation Army to check there was a need,” she says. Salvation Army major Jill Knight says the organisation was particularly pleased with the number of food items dropped off as their current stock had just run out. “We’ve already handed out presents to 1000 kids in the Tasman area and we’ve got

more to do this week. We couldn’t do it without this amazing community and people like Tasman Auto Electrics are just making all of the difference,” she says. “The kids are going to be really amazed. We can only give what we are given and we had actually run out of food.” The Salvation Army works alongside a various number of agencies that will have identified families and children that would benefit from the gift of a Christmas present. The winner of the $1000 was Richmond woman Robyn Cliff.

Tasman Auto Electrics are over the moon with the response they got from a Christmas promotion, which saw thousands of dollars worth of presents donated to the Salvation Army ready for distribution. The Richmond business ran a Christmas Cracker competition where Waimea Weekly readers could cut out an entry form from the paper and take it in along with a non-perishable food item or a new toy to leave under Dawn Rameka-iti of Tasman Auto Electrics and Jill the tree. One lucky entrant was then Knight of the Salvation Army with some of the toys drawn out of a hat to win $1000 cash while each week someone won a $100 handed into the business for a donation at Christmas.

Richmond Bowling Club

The opening of the new pavilion and refurbished green of the Richmond Bowling Club was held on the 30th of November 2012 . It is great to see this fantastic facility finished and the new bowling green will be a pleasure to all who wish to play outdoor bowls with friends in all weather. The club house was appropriately

named the Ken Smith Pavilion in respect of the dedication, experience and work that was required to bring the project to a successful conclusion. Ken was very quick to say that nothing would of happened without the many volunteers involved who also gave their time. If you haven’t already, head down to the Richmond Bowling Club.

Snooker bestows Life Membership In a move which confounded the recipient, members of the Club Waimea Snooker Section honoured their convenor Colin Bowden with Section Life Membership at their recent annual general meeting. In moving the nomination, Nobby Yorwarth spoke of the considerable service Colin had given to snooker within the Club, culminating in being the organiser for the very successful 2012 Clubs NZ South Island Pairs Tournament held at Waimea in early August. In devising and managing an innovative fund-raising scheme, Colin had ensured that both the Club and the Snooker Section had benefited from the hosting of this event, as well as enhancing the reputation this district has for competent organisation of sports functions. The motion was unanimously carried by those present, upon which Nobby presented Colin with a pre-printed badge signifying the title. Although

So this is Christmas... I wonder what first comes to mind when the word Christmas is mentioned. Is it decorating a tree, hanging lights, school holidays, getting together with family, planning a holiday, the Santa parade, buying or giving presents? Or maybe the words, oh no more stress as sadly for some, Christmas can be a time when it’s hard to find that extra money needed to buy gifts or something extra for the dinner table. Christmas can bring happy memories as we get together with people who are close. We may even be surprised by a visit from someone unexpected or an unexpected gift, while others may be saddened with a Christmas without a loved one. However we approach it, Christmas is a time of celebration. It’s a celebration of an event that took place a little over 2000 years ago, that involved the birth of a baby, angels appearing to shepherds, some wise men, a star, and the

Here we are in December with a busy time ahead. It will be less than a week till Christmas day by the time you are reading this, and we hope you are all organised for that special time with family and friends when it gets here. We hope to have a meeting with folk from the Tasman District Council as to how we proceed to make the Village Green the special place we want it to be now that it is part of the Councils parks and reserves. We have finally replaced the broken planter outside of McLean’s Four Square. It would be great if we do not have to replace any others in the future. These along with the hanging baskets look great and we take this opportunity to thank the businesses along there for organising the regular watering of the plants.

We have purchased more Christmas lights this year from Mega Mitre 10 and will be putting them up in the Village Green. They should be up and shining by the time you are reading this. Thanks to Mega Mitre 10 for the great deal they offered when we purchased the lights. We appreciate your support. Hi Reach have kindly donated the use of a cherry picker to help us get the lights up high into the trees. Thanks Hi Reach - we appreciate your help with this. We hope you all got along to Glolites a couple of Saturdays ago. What a great night was had by all of those attending. We would like to thank all of those generous local people who help out with things in our Community like the mowing of the lawn at the Village Green, or lending their mower

Brightwater School Flower Show and Pet Day It was Friday 23 November, and you know how certain things trigger those special childhood memories…..well the Brightwater School Hall managed just that! It was the morning of the Annual Flower Show and Pet Day at the school. Children, mums, dads, aunties, and Grans were a-buzz with excitement as they arrived at school, noisily chatting about their arm loads of flowers, or how long it took to decorate their biscuits, or what exotic or unusual container they found in the back shed for their floral arrangement. By 9am, the Hall was like the inside of the Home Baking Section at the A&P show! The tables were laden with biscuits decorated with personalities as different as the children that made them. Each syndicate section was loaded with special treats all vying for the coveted 1st prize. Plates of carefully cut fudge tempted the judges! Busy children from 5 to 11 had worked feverishly in classes all morning, primping and snipping,

A first time experience for many of the junior school pupils, but you would never know! The attention to detail and creativity was beyond their years. By 11am the Hall was heaving with flower arrangements, sand saucers, novelty containers and cute little button holes. The smell was amazing! There was a spectacular display of colour, texture and design. Each and every child deserved a prize for their efforts. Thanks to the judges from the Horticultural Society for their help. How could you choose? Was it to be the old mossy boot, or the toilet bowl, the green pumpkin, or even the old toaster? Novelty container……you bet! Only limited by their imaginations.

Just before lunchtime, class by class, the children arrived to view the exhibits, and excitedly congratulate each other on a place they may have received. What a delight, a simple pleasure to stand by and admire all that was there to see. The enthusiasm and spirit was a real treat. Well done Brightwater School! Brightwater Playcentre What a fantastic trip we had to Natureland recently, where the children got to watch the porcupine and the meerkats being fed by the keeper. Christine, Natureland’s educator, brought out a rat, a cockatiel and a tortoise for us to hold and observe. It was great to see the awe in the children’s faces as they interacted closely with these animals. We are extending children in literacy, by providing resources in encouraging them to write their own names. Our fundraising team ran a Movie Night, where the children came and watched a movie, had their dinner and played games. Well done to everyone involved for raising about $360 for the Centre. Nelson drivers take series lead Phillip Rollo

Ian Burson and Shane Carey remain well in the hunt despite Christchurch’s Mark Osborne running away with victory in Saturday’s ELF Super Cup 25-lap feature race. What seems like a travelling circus, showcasing the South Island’s quickest super saloons, the ELF Super Cup started brightly in Blenheim the two of Nelson’s top drivers with Ian and Shane sitting pretty perched at the top of the standings. The two drivers have now swapped spots on the overall standings and

will into head into the third round with a small points advantage of a number of out of town drivers, including Mark, who collected an impressive 265 points on Saturday night. Despite finishing second in the feature race in Nelson, Ian was the third highest point taker on Saturday with 222. Drivers accumulate points depending on their overall position and for how many cars they overtake. The ELF Super Cup takes drivers all across the South Island with the final round being held in March.

Dates confirmed for fishing comp The region’s largest fishing competition has confirmed the third weekend in January as its date for 2013. The McCashin’s Brewery and Motueka RSA Fishing Contest will have its weigh in on January 20 at the Motueka RSA after three days of fishing action in Tasman Bay.

The contest has a huge prize pool, including $1500 for the heaviest snapper over 20 pound and $400 for the average snapper weight. Organisers say they are hoping for more contestants from Richmond and Nelson this year. Entry forms at McCashin’s Brewery or most sports shops in Richmond and Motueka.

National Championships this season and Nelson competitors have been working hard to ensure they will not just represent the club with pride but also have a more than great chance of success. Whether you are one of the many competitors preparing to travel off to compete at the National Championships or one of the thousands of supporters looking forward to the racing at the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speedway, this summer is shaping up to be one of the best. The summer programme begins with the Xmas Extravaganza meeting on Saturday 29 December and features the Superstock and Sidecar Club Championships and round two of the Three Quarter Midget Club Champs. Also scheduled to race are the Youth Ministocks, Midgets and Streetstocks. As a late Christmas prezzy the club is giving away a brand new bike to one lucky child in the crowd. There will also be secret Santa gifts and the chance to win a free pass to the qualifying at the New Zealand Home

Loans NZ Superstock Champs. This will be the last chance for our Superstocks to have a home track run prior to their National title on January 11 and 12 and you can be sure that with the Club Championship on the line as well the pace will be super quick and super exciting. Superstocks are the heavyweights of Speedway, they are purpose built for both speed and full contact. The New Zealand Superstock Championship is the premier event on the NZ Speedway calander and Nelson has an unequalled reputation for hosting top quality championship events so this is truly a not to be missed event. The support we have received from New Zealand Home Loans has made it possible for us to offer great prize money which has helped to entice a number of former New Zealand, Grand Prix, North and South Island Championship place getters on to the entry list. Anyone watching Superstock racing for the first time is left open mouthed at the hard hitting full on racing these guys dish up week to

Fresh bid for national football

Greg Hay in action during the two-day cricket final. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Hay, what an innings! WTTU take two-day cricket title They say big players step up in big games and no one stood higher than Greg Hay, as the Waimea Toi Toi United batsman hit an unbeaten 138 runs to gift the Tigers their second two-day title in as many years. Car Company Stoke/Nayland had two heroes of their own with seamers Marty King and Darius Skeaping claiming all nine wickets between them as they shouldered the most of the bowling work. At tea on the second day, the match was all but resigned to just one innings each. But Greg, who now claims the Vonda Edwards Trophy for the competition’s most prolific batsman, was unstoppable as last year’s champions held on for a famous victory, surpassing Stoke/ Nayland’s 245 in the 89th over with just one wicket to spare. captain Jon Routhan says it was a dream final. “I don’t think anyone would have begrudged the result if it had gone the other way and I don’t think Stoke/Nayland begrudge us. It was just a really good game of cricket,” he says. “Every team member got us to the final and then the final is when big players step up and it was a pretty special night.” Symon Carr contributed an important 17 runs to the total late in the day following on from Cade Armstrong’s 15. Opener Stephen Binnie was the only other WTTU batsman to reach double figures. In the first innings WTTU bowlers claimed a share of the wickets with Dan Wightman and Cade collecting three each. Sam Baxendine took two wickets while Symon and Greg also had a ‘W’ to their names on the bowling sheet.

is confident Nelson will foot it with the best in the country next season. Meanwhile on the field, coach Davor Tavich believes the Nelson Falcons have got what it takes to play at ASB Youth League level after a reasonably successful spell of pre-season matches over the weekend. Despite picking up an injury to goal keeper Coey Turipa during Friday’s 2-0 win over Team Wellington, the Falcons fought bravely losing 1-2 against YoungHeart Manawatu and 2-3 against Hawke’s Bay United in a small pre-season tournament. Captain Mark Johnston and Waimea College’s Dion Keetley were forced to share the keeping duties in Coey’s absence before the former New Zealand Under 20 rep returned for the following day’s action. Nelson lost again to Hawke’s Bay on the Sunday, going down 1-2 before ending the trip on a high with a 2-1 win over Manawatu. The Falcons’ first home game is on January 13.

Nelson has entered a fresh bid for a full national league team days after its youth league team played together for the first time. The group behind the Nelson Falcons youth team, which won two of its preseason games over the weekend, entered the bid with New Zealand Football on Monday. It is hoped that the team will be able to play in next season’s competition. Committee member Aldo Miccio says it’s important to have a “flagship” senior team in the national competition. “New Zealand Football invited us to resubmit our bid for next year so we’ve sent that away and we’re confident, all things going well, that next year we’ll have a senior men’s team in the ASB premiership. It’s important to have that team that youth can aspire to and be inspired by.” He says the Falcons proved over the weekend that the region has the talent and with the governance and structure set up for the youth league team, he
