Speed limits reduced on some local roads The speed limit has been reduced on local Tasman roads this week when a new speed limit came into force on State Highway 60 (SH60) between McShane Rd and Maisey Rd. The Tasman District Council (TDC) approved reduced speed
limits for several roads that intersect with the crash-prone section. Mayor Richard Kempthorne says “This will make our roads safer. There was high support for reducing speeds on SH60 and connecting roads from those who took part in the public consulta-
tion earlier this year.” Richard says many submitters also supported improvements to road layout along the route. The local roads and their new speed limits are: • Lower Queen St - 80kmh (down from 100kmh)
• Lansdowne Rd – 80kmh (from 100kmh) • Best Island Rd – 80kmh (from 100kmh) • Barnett Ave – 60kmh (from 100kmh) • Blackbyre Rd – 80kmh (from 100kmh)
• River Rd, Appleby – 60kmh (from 100kmh) • Redwood Rd – 80kmh (from 100kmh) • Research Orchard Rd – 80kmh (from 100kmh) • Pukeko Lane – 80kmh (from 100kmh)

A monster exhibition for summer
The Nelson Provincial Museum’s latest exhibition Life Before Dinosaurs: Permian Monsters will have visitors stepping back in time 290 million years to when bizarre-looking animals dominated life on earth. With six life-sized animatronic monsters, some over three metres long; as well as 30 casts of fossils, and full-size skeletons, this international exhibition is expected to be a summer blockbuster. Opening to the public on December 26, the Museum is expecting record attendance. Museum Chief Executive Officer, Lucinda Blackley-Jimson, says, “this exhibition continues to attract record numbers of visitors wherever it goes. The show combines education with interactive family fun. If you have a dinosaur fan in your family, they will love these Permian Monsters.”
Gorgonopsians were among the years. Photo: Supplied. To manage the expected numbers of visitors a new ticket booking system has been set up on the Nelson Provincial Museum’s website. “There are at least six sessions a day, so lots of opportunities for people to book in to see
bizarre-looking animals that dominated life on earth 290 million this exhibition over the summer. The booking system will also reduce the inconvenience of long queues and will help ensure visitors to the Museum have the best possible experience. The ticket booking system is open now,
ahead of the exhibition opening on Boxing Day. The tickets to the exhibition also make great Christmas presents.” The exhibition is based around the geological period known as the Permian, which began at the
ginning
end of the ice age. It was the period of time before the first dinosaurs when the first large land animals walked the earth. “Visitors can expect to see sharks with ‘circular saw’-like teeth, giant amphibians and larger predators – most notably the giant sabretoothed Gorgonopsid which was top of the food chain.” The exhibition was created by award-winning Australian exhibition creators Gondwana Studios, who specialise in creating full size, moving animatronic models and casting accurate skeletons. The exhibition also blends art and science with a collection of artwork which offers a glimpse back in time through the eyes of award-winning paleoartist Julius Csotonyi. The exhibition runs from 26 December 2018 – 6 April 2019. See www.nelsonmuseum.co.nz.

Toy run could change route
our low, flat fee is a fair fee
Amy Russ
Around 80 motorbikes roared their way through Richmond recently for the annual fundraising ride for the Salvation Army organised by Ulysses Nelson. Organiser Allan Smith says that, despite transport constraints and the weather, the ride went well. “Normally we have around 200 bikes participate in the event, however this year only 80 or so participated due to weather and such. We had to ride differently but things ran well despite constraints. $450 was donated to the Salvation Army on the day.” Unfortunately, traffic constraint issues put a damper on the day, with riders unable to keep together and being split up by roundabouts and traffic lights, but Allan remains optimistic that it was good ride. “We have done the same thing we have always done for the past how many years but this year the Tasman District Council (TDC) wouldn’t accept our traffic plan submission. For years we have been safely doing what we normally

We did ask the organisers last year to please come to us earlier as it is an extremely busy time of year with events, and that didn’t happen. We would like to keep working together.” Allan says that moving for-
ward for next year the club will be more vigilant planning. “The first step will be to do due diligence and find out what would be involved with a TMP robust enough to satisfy TDC and New Zealand Traffic Agency (NZTA). “If it is that we cannot provide the appropriate staff or afford the costs, we might consider a different route that avoids TDC and minimizes crossing roundabouts. “This is already under discussion.”

Bateup Rd open for Christmas Work currently taking place on Bateup Rd, near Three Brothers Cnr, will take a break over Christmas to reduce disruption to residents and the public over the holiday season, a spokesperson for the council says. Construction will stop between December 21 and January 7. “We hope to reopen the road to two lanes over that time but will assess whether we can ensure pedestrian and motorist safety before making a final decision.” Stage one of the project began in August with completion still on target for March 2019, says Chris Choat. “Progress is going well and by the time the shutdown occurs contractors will have completed the new waterpipe and 75 percent of the stormwater upgrades. The power lines will all have been moved underground and kerb, channel and footpaths will be finished on the east side of Bateup Rd between Paton Rd and Alchemy Café.” Final stage to be completed after the New Year includes the remaining section of stormwater waterpipe, kerb, channel and remaining footpath. Road construction and sealing will be the final piece of work.

Impressive students awarded scholarships Emily Beaumont It’s always a tough decision and this year was no different for Richmond pharmacist Andrew McGlashen. For the past decade Andrew has generously awarded a deserving local student a $1000 scholarship to help the individual achieve their goals. “There were so many exceptional applicants this year that I twisted my business partner, Scott Fry of Fry’s Pharmacy, to throw in $1000, so we could double the prize pool and award more students,” says Andrew. This year’s supreme winner and recipient of $1000 is Cooper Grant, a talented baseballer. “Cooper’s an outstanding young man who has some impressive goals going forward and also what struck me is how much he’s given back to the sport locally.” Acknowledging the effort it takes to promote growth in New Zealand’s smaller sports, Andrew says Cooper has put a lot into his peers and youngsters to grow the sport. Cooper says the scholarship will help fund the costs he incurs travelling to numerous training camps. “I love the game. I grew up playing softball then converted to

Simon and Ben Conning (pictured), along with their brother Toby, are gearing up to open a market destination for the public encompassing local foods and crafts in the one place. Their parents have been involved in the business for forty plus years and Simon says the current fruit and vege shop will soon be moved into the new building. The complex is to be called ‘Old Factory Corner’ with the title being a nod to the original 1909 factory building that currently houses Farm Fresh. Ben says that part of the design of the new structure was to have it in keeping with the old factory. The brothers are keeping the big plans quiet for now and are looking at an April 2019 completion date for the site. Photo: Amy Russ.

It’s official, the tree is up and Christmas day is just around the corner! Charlotte Bidlake from Richmond Unlimited says the group commissioned a local resident who specialises in wrought iron art, Adam Styles, for this year’s creation. “Adam was given the brief to create a hard wearing, elegant, yet modern solution to a Christmas Tree for Sundial Square. It was to incorporate elements reflective of Richmond such as leaves and vines - to represent the harvest background - and Korus - to represent the family focus - and new beginnings relevant to Queen Street. And of course, festive elements to celebrate Aotearoa and Christmas.” Adam from Adam Styles Creative Metal was thrilled to be involved in the project and relished the opportunity to put his creative works to use in a public space. “It is probably the biggest creation we have done and took three weeks to create. There is a little bit of festive and a little bit of local kiwiChristmas in the design. We wanted to try and keep it relative to the local area.” Richmond Unlimited are thrilled with the result of the 5 metre high tree, and they look forward to bringing it out over the coming years.
MERRY
Kaio Lart were each awarded $250. “All of the applicants are such good kids, it’s nice to be involved with them and doing positive things. It’s just hard not to be able to reward all of them,” says Andrew.

Tasman Street Ambassadors Paul McConachie, Daniel Aston and Tiffany Jeffery out on the the street in Richmond. Photo: Supplied.
Street ambassadors keeping the peace Amy Russ Skilled local youth workers, the Tasman Street Ambassadors, are out patrolling the streets again and helping keep the public safer until early February. The team of 19 across Tasman and Nelson districts patrol public places, deliver safety messages and offer advice and assistance when needed.
The aim is to engage with the public and - while working in partnership with local police, community patrols and Maori wardens, - to intervene with the aim of stopping trouble before it starts. Tasman District Council youth and community works advisor, Paul McConachie, says the trained group pride themselves on having quite a diverse team
of ambassadors. “This is important because we do come across a lot of different walks of life in the street.” “We like to instil a sense of pride and prestige in the community that we live in,” says Paul. “The public response we have gotten since being back has been pretty great. It’s been overwhelming, from people on the street to door-staff at the
pubs, we get high fives and hugs from all over, there seems to be a sense of relief that we are back on the street and helping.” The Street Ambassadors service is provided by Tasman District Council and is delivered by Youth and Community Works. They will be patrolling streets and events across the region between 8:30pm – 2:30am, Friday and Saturday nights.

100 years and counting Amy Russ Claude Teece was born on December 12, 1918. He survived three years of soldiering in Cairo during World War Two. He married his teenage sweetheart, Kath, as soon as he got back from the war and they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary just before Kath’s passing in 2014. He has three children, seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren (with another due next month), has luncheoned with Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth, was a councillor for Motueka Borough then spent four and a half years as the mayor of the region before the amalgamation with Tasman District Council. And he has just turned 100 years old. Claude has seen changes in the world like very few others have and the ex-Harakeke farmer has taken it all in his stride. “It just feels like any other day,” says Claude, “I am quite happy as long as I have got my health!” Daughter-in-law Anne-Marie Teece says he still lives very independently, and he has his own home next door to son Mark, and AnneMarie. Claude attributes his longevity to healthy living, “eat three square meals a day and get a good night’s sleep” - something he thinks we all need to take on board. The Teece’s celebrated the significant birthday on Saturday, December 15, with family and friends, and Anne-Marie says it was an amazing day.

New Zealanders get more information about their town from the local community newspaper than any other source, according to new research. Commissioned as part of a 2degrees research project, the survey asked more than 2000 New Zealanders how they are communicating in their communities and the role technology plays in the way they connect. The results revealed that around a third of Kiwis rate local newspapers and magazines as the best source of local news, while online sources like community social media pages/chat groups lag behind on 23 per cent. The survey’s findings around community newspapers struck a chord with a former mayor Sir Bob Harvey who, after more than 27 years in local government, has witnessed first-hand the important role of community press in setting the local agenda. “I can’t overstate the importance of community papers and community journalism in ensuring the health and well-being of commu-
nities in Aotearoa,” says Sir Bob. “Community papers provide channelled advocacy of important local issues in a way that isn’t mirrored simply by residents chatting on a community Facebook page. They also champion issues and stories that would escape the attention of the mainstream media.” The Community Newspaper Association of New Zealand has more than 80 independent newspapers associated with it. Its president Dave McKenzie says the results aren't surprising, but welcomed. "It's great research which supports what we see every day over the country. Independent newspapers are a trusted source of local knowledge." 2degrees CEO Stewart Sherriff says the research has provided interesting reading. “As a telco we’re deeply interested in how Kiwis communicate, and where they get their information from. The role of the community paper in informing, supporting and championing our communities is obviously something many Kiwis still hold dear.”

Just a thought... Hi everyone, its David from the Baptist church here. Thought you may be encouraged by Louis Cassels’ Christmas Parable: There was once a man who looked upon Christmas as a lot of humbug. He wasn’t a Scrooge. He was a very kind and decent person, generous to his family, upright in all his dealings with other men. And he believed there was a God out there somewhere, but he didn’t believe all that stuff about [God coming to earth as a man] which churches proclaim at Christmas. And he was too honest to pretend that he did. “I am truly sorry to distress you,” he told his wife, who was a faithful churchgoer. “But I simply cannot understand this claim that God became a man. It doesn’t make any sense
to me.” On Christmas Eve, his wife and children went to church for the midnight service. He declined to accompany them. “I’d feel like a hypocrite,” he explained. “I’d much rather stay at home. But I’ll wait up for you.” Shortly after his family drove away in the car, snow began to fall. He went to the window and watched the flurries getting heavier and heavier. “If we must have Christmas,” he reflected, “it’s nice to have a white one.” He went back to his chair by the fireside and began to read his newspaper. A few minutes later, he was startled by a thudding sound. It was quickly followed by another, then another. He thought that someone must be throwing snowballs at his living-
room window. When he went turned on a light. But the birds to the front door to investigate, didn’t come in. “Food will bring he found a flock of birds hud- them in,” he thought. He stood silently for a while, listening to the bells pealing the glad tidings of Christmas. Then he sank to his knees in the snow. “God now I understand,” he whispered. “Now I see why You had to do it.” Friends, the Awesome and Holy God of heaven, knowing our frailty and fear, has come to us in a gentle way, a humble way, a tangible way, a familiar way - even a vulnerable way to lead us to safety. This is truly Good News of great joy for all people May you know the blessing of His love this Christmas.

duced flyers saying Brightwater would risk an eight metre high tidal wave despite expert scientists and engineers rubbishing the claims. Poison opponents made dicks of themselves in dumping dead birds on the steps of Parliament, claiming they died of 1080 when autopsies showed they were roadkill or had been shot. These two significant decisions give me hope that rational arguments can win. My hope for 2019 is that good science and practical solutions might triumph more often in local, national and international politics. Best wishes for Christmas and the New Year. Advt.

The second win was the decision of the Court of Appeal to reject the claims against the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary and the national regulations I put in place in 2016 as Environment Minister for safe poison use. New Zealand has a massive problem with 25 million birds killed each year by predators like possums, rats and stoats. We’re not going to save New Zealand’s precious native birds unless we take a science-based approach to responsible use of poisons. Fake news reared its ugly head in both debates. Dam opponents pro-

It will also provide secure water for the thousands of new homes in Richmond, Mapua, Brightwater and Nelson South. My problem with the Green Party’s opposition is that their alternative of slashing water takes and converting the Waimea Plains to dry weather crops (whatever they are) is so impractical. I am also disappointed this will be the last water infrastructure project to get Government support with Labour cancelling the fund. Infrastructure is part of the answer

lift our game in managing fresh water and caring for our rivers. The Waimea River has been in trouble for decades because too much water is extracted in summer for irrigation, industry and town water supplies. The river is a bare trickle most summers and becomes heavily polluted with ugly algae. Neither New Zealand nor our region has an overall shortage of fresh water. We only use 2% of the total resource. The problems are in specific areas during summer droughts. The common sense answer is to store some of the huge surpluses of water from winter for summer use. The Waimea Community Dam will

Two big wins during Parliament’s last week concluded my year on a high note. They are Nelson issues but have national implications. The first win was getting my local Bill through Parliament authorising the Tasman District Council legal access over the DOC land for the Waimea Community Dam. This was the last issue to resolve to enable construction to get underway early next year. This $100m dam will be the largest to be built in NZ in over 20 years. The timing was tight with $43m in Government funding support that I previously helped secure, expiring this month. Everybody agrees that we have to

The Waimea College event has been running since 2012 and organiser Tim Close says there were six finalists who took part in the competition held last month. “Students are given a list of 100 words to study, which forms the basis for two rounds – a written round, then a sudden death spoken eliminator round – then the final round is based on words the students have previously not studied. Six years ago, changes were made to the alcohol supply law to support parents to keep teens safe by requiring express consent from the parent or legal guardian for their teen to drink alcohol. The law also requires that any alcohol given to an under-18-year-old is supplied in a ‘responsible’ manner. Adult supervision, plenty of food, non-alcoholic drink options and safe transport options to get everyone home are some ways parents can be responsible. The award came with $1000 to put toward the project.

method of aggregate placement to using a paver laying machine throughout the new piece of trail. Laying the gravel surface in this way makes for a very smooth gravel cycle trail. “By utilising the machine paving we have reduced any wastage of the customer’s aggregate and at the same time reduced emissions through less transport cartage. The cycle ride is smoother and safer, and lacks the usual texture and rutting commonly found on looselaid cycle trails.” Josh Aldridge, Nelson Tasman Cycle Trail Trust trail manager, says the priority of the organisation remains connecting the ‘missing link’ between Wakefield and Wai-iti Domain. “We recently obtained the final land access agreements needed to begin building this section and are preparing for construction this summer. Our focus will then turn to the section from Kohatu to Tapawera - another step in the direction of completing the Great Taste Trail loop and will bring immediate community and economic benefits to residents of Tapawera.”

their child first drinks alcohol because it can damage the growing brain.” The creators say teens are prone to take risks even without alcohol, that adding alcohol into the mix can ruin good intentions by inhibiting brain function related to decision-making, putting teens in danger of accident, injury, or assault. “We want young people to get safely through their teens, so we’ve designed The PLAN to help parents to minimise alcohol-related risks along the way”, says Rosey.
The newest section of the Great Tasman Taste Trail is set to open in time for the Christmas break and, according to Higgins representative Kim Ace, it is already being touted as perhaps the ‘smoothest unsealed cycle trail in the country.’ Construction began in September this year after government funding was approved in February following two years of planning and fund-raising by the Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust, and Kim says it will be open to the public on December 22. The majority of the new section of trail follows the historic railway alignment between Nelson and Glenhope which operated for 79 years between 1876 and 1955. Construction of the cycle trail has preserved the historic culverts and bridge abutments. The track finishes up at the Flat Rock Cafe in Kohatu, which is a key entry point to the Great Taste Trail for visitors coming from the South. Higgins project manager Steve Lovell says the company got creative by changing from the traditional truck and digger

A local project called The PLAN won $1000 and best poster award at the 2018 Nelson Marlborough Health Innovation Awards recently. “We believe the award not only recognises our work, but also the importance of the issue of teen drinking” say the three project leaders, Hilary Genet and Carol McIntosh of Nelson Marlborough Health, and Rosey Duncan of Health Action Trust. The PLAN was created with the help of parents in Tas-
man and Nelson. It provides tips and tools, for parents of teens, to delay teen drinking by making family plans, talking with their teens, and keeping in touch with the parents of their kids’ friends to discuss if and when their teens might drink alcohol. Parents are also encouraged to do the quizzes that can be found on the website. “New evidence is disrupting the previously held belief that introducing alcohol to young people early in small amounts is the best policy. Parents are now being urged to delay the moment that

As Christmas approaches we all find this a busy time of the year, time for family and holidays. As a community it’s nice to look out for one another and our neighbours as not all find this a easy and fun time of year, so please take the time to simply check on friends and neighbours. And try to involve those in your neighbourhood living on their own. The kind BGW Association secretary has set up the Brightwater Community Fruit and Vege Stall (www.facebook.com/Bwcommunityfruitandvegestall/) - in conjunction with the Love Food Hate Waste movement. The stall is a place where you can drop off excess fruit and vegetables and swap for something you need. You can drop off non-perishable items and even baking. The stall will be at the Starvaell end of Ben Nevis Cres (opposite the park), the idea is to give what you can, take what you need. A great initiative leading up to Xmas. Please feel free to come join in.
Brightwater has again in the past few nights had some break-ins, so over the Christmas months lock up and don’t advertise on social media that you are away on holidays. Any activity that seems not right don’t hesitate to contact the police DDI: 03 541 8210 Wakefield Police number or 111. This brings me back to the cameras for Brightwater and security. The BGW community association is working on securing a grant for the cameras so we can get some in place 2019 along with the street upgrade. Monday the 3rd, The Brightwater association had the Hon Nick Smith visit us to help look at ways to secure the Church land near Snowden’s bush with some wonderful ideas on how to fund the money to secure this area. As a community, if there is anyone with ideas or thoughts on how to fund-raise for this please contact myself or the Brightwater Community association. As fire season approaches the Brightwater Fire Brigade is still looking for keen volunteers. A very merry Christmas and happy new year to all.

This months Richmond Stihl Shop Good Sorts $100 voucher winner is all-round good guy, Eric Peterson. Eric has been nominated by Jan Edge and the staff and community at Oakwoods in Richmond. Receptionist Jan says Oakwoods has a bunch of ‘Good Sorts’ there, but Eric is a real gem. “He has spent much of his time driving vans, and his own vehicle, for various organisations to get community members to appointments, activities and events that they would otherwise not be able to get to because of limited mobility.” Eric drives the shuttle buggy at Nelson Hospital and Jan says he spends most summer weekends and evenings supporting young local swimmers get to practices and events in the wider re-
gion. “Right here in the village, we do not know what we would do without Eric. No matter what the event, Eric is one of the first to be on the spot to help move furniture, arrange events, drive residents to concerts, appointments or outings, often using his own vehicle.” “He is always ready with a smile and a laugh and truly is our go-to person when we need a hand. He has the biggest and kindest heart of anyone we know and would wear the Good Sort title well. We think he should wear a crown!” Eric has been at Oakwoods for coming up five years and says he genuinely enjoys that help he provides. “I am so thankful to have been nominated. I do love the elderly and do love my kids at the swimming club. I really enjoy my volunteer work. I work for Stoke Seniors as well and very much enjoy all the outings!”
“I wanted Julie Ivory to be involved with the opportunity because she is a member of the volunteer group that helps me. It means a lot to have her here.” If you know anyone in your neighbourhood who is a Good Sort let the team at Waimea Weekly know. Send in your nomination, along with contact details for yourself and the nominee, and they could be in the draw to receive a $100 voucher from Richmond Stihl Shop. Recipients must be from the Waimea Weeekly distribution area to qualify. This month’s Richmond Stihl Shop Good Sorts winner, Eric Peterson, receives his Richmond Stihl Shop $100 ‘Good Sorts’ voucher from sales person Ollie Klotz with a member of Eric’s volunteer group Julie Ivory. We have had some great times with our Saturday night entertainment, monthly Friday night bands, Sunday afternoon Jazz thru the winter months, St Pat’s day, Madsen Super Star Show, and another great Melbourne Cup Day. There has also
been the introduction of a bi-monthly Quiz Night, which will continue to grow next year, loads of fun had by everyone who has come along. This all augers well for the coming year. I just want to thank everyone who has assisted in the organisation of these events, and thank all of you, our members, for your support, fun, and laughter. Great times! On that note, I want to wish you all a Merry Xmas, look forward to catching up over the festive season, and let’s introduce a very happy, prosperous, and enjoyable New Year! Cheers

Tom Murray and Sam Lenton competed at the two-day regatta at Rabbit Island on December 8 and 9. Kevin Strickland from Nelson Rowing Club says crews came from Marlborough and St Margaret’s College to compete. Each race was its own individual event, but Kevin says Nelson managed to dominate most of the races. “It was two days of really good rowing. The location is just superb, and the water was perfect. This was the last meet before Christmas breakup and we will be back rowing around mid-January in preparation for the National Club Champs in February.” Photo: Supplied.

Hollie Southward and her pony Pico graced the cover of the latest Ponies magazine, surprising Hollie who was unaware their photo had been sent in. “I was definitely surprised. It was so fun though, I got so many messages about it and have been really enjoying it,” says Hollie. The 10-year-old lives in Brightwater and says that she loves being ‘matchy-matchy’ with her pony, and enjoys showing, jumping, pony club and cleaning out her tack room, which is spotless. Photos: Emily Beaumont.
Emily Beaumont The A&P show is famed for bringing town and country together, so when show stalwart Graeme Taylor had the brainwave to introduce gumboot throwing at this year’s event it was well-received. “I got an old freezing work’s gumboot and my wife donated one for the women’s, those together with some standards from down the back and we were all go,” says Graeme. Setting the entry price at $5
per person, it was decided it’d be ‘winner takes all’. Although entries weren’t off the charts, there were enough keen gumboot throwers to make for a competition. Richmond’s Christine Cook took out Saturday’s women’s competition. “I’m a dairy farmer’s daughter, so I guess I’ve thrown a few gumboots in my time,” says Christine. A lover of redbands, Christine says she’ll definitely be returning to the show next year to defend her title.

Please place your recycling bins and bags on the roadside in a location where our drivers can see them clearly. If you leave the area prior to collection day or have an excess, you can drop your official rubbish bags and recycling at any Resource Recovery Centre free of charge. Make sure you do not overfill your recycling bin or glass crate, or it will not be collected. Because this is a busy time of the year our contractor will have extra vehicles on the road and will be starting early. Please remember to have your rubbish and recycling out by 7.00 am and please take care when passing our collection vehicles.
Resource Recovery Centre opening hours Our Resource Recovery Centres will be closed on Christmas Day and New Years Day, but otherwise open as normal. Over the summer the Takaka and Collingwood Resource Recovery Centres will be open 7 days a week.

Runners bust their gut Last Wednesday’s Eddyline Series Run was the Templemore double loop course. Despite having a few uphill sections, this course is a favourite of many athletes competing in the Waimea Harrier 5km series. The terrain is constantly changing as competitors wind their way up the Boundary Stream track to Hill Street and then enjoy the downhill section on Templemore Drive. Richard Greatrex had a great run, finishing in 18.24mins,
but was closely pursued by Chris Sharland just 5 sec behind him. Wednesday 19th December is the last of the Eddyline runs this year, with the start date for 2019 being Feb 6th. Saturday’s run was the ‘Gutbuster’, aptly named because it involved three circuits of the block around the Nelson Cathedral – Selwyn, Rutherford, Van Diemen and Trafalgar Streets. Not only were the hill climbs sapping of energy,
but the heat was also intense throughout the 7km race. However, Nelson runners and walkers are always up for a challenge and 66 athletes put themselves to the test! Everyone who completed the course was a winner, but in particular, young Matthew Bowen impressed everyone when he finished in 27.31mins. Saturday runs continue through December and January, based in a great variety of different locations in the Nelson region.

Both the weather and the tennis was warm and welcoming at the inaugural XGen Christmas Tennis Tournament this weekend. The entry requirements were a large serving of Christmas spirit and a minimum of a 25 year age difference between pairings. Plenty of chilled water, ice cream cones and Christmas cake was provided between matches to keep players hydrated, cool and energised. The atmosphere on court was jovial and the tennis was entertaining with player’s ages ranging from 7 to around 77 years of age. “The spirit of Christmas and sharing was evident. It was a pleasure to see families and players across all ages enjoying the event, a perfect way to round off the year”. Winners; Grinch’s draw - Lucy and Jane Mitchell (Nelson Club), Rudolf ’s draw - Daniel & Blair Tomlinson (Hope Club), Santa’s Draw Liam & Steve Howes (Richmond Club), Elf ’s draw – Max & Angus Murdoch (Hope Club). Merry Christmas, from Nelson Bays Tennis Association.
