Brightwater to get major upgrade Matt McCrorie Reporter

Brightwater is set to get a major upgrade in the coming months. A recently-announced project will see Ellis Street, the main street in Brightwater, redesigned and upgraded. With a cost of $1.4million, the

Brightwater overhaul is set to be tendered next month. Construction is set to begin in September, with a completion date of June 2020. The Tasman District Council says the need for an upgraded centre for Brightwater came as the community is rapidly growing, and that the growth puts pressures on the main street and community hub.

The development has a large focus on road safety, slowing traffic down and creating larger shared pedestrian and cycle spaces. Aleisha Hosie, secretary of the Brightwater Community Association, says that the upgrade is ‘much needed’. “Brightwater is a fast-growing area, lots of young families live here now, and it needs to be safer for our kids. We need a positive

investment for our community.” The community response to the plan has been a positive one, with Aleisha saying that the council has been “fantastic” in working closely with the community. “They have come to our community meetings, sought our ideas, and made changes. They consulted with us about what we wanted.” One of the main concern resi-

dents raised was speed and traffic, with many young families worried about road safety. Roundabouts and other traffic calming features will be added with the aim of keeping speeds down, and the upgrade also plans to develop wider, more clearly defined footpaths that will create a safe space for kids travelling to

school, whether they’re walking or cycling. A raised roundabout will be added at the Lord Rutherford / Ellis Street intersection to control traffic, and the undergrounding of overhead powerlines will help with a range of street improvements, including improved street lighting and adding accessibility to the park, village green and stream. Another of the key features of the upgrade will see the street embrace the natural landscape, enhancing the local stream and improving drainage and the landscape, and will see more trees planted along the street. Councillor Dana Wesley says the addition of trees and more green space is a big win for Brightwater. “The more green space you live near, the better your health and well-being. Greenery is important for kids if they’re walking to school, they have shade, and the biodiversity brings different types of birds.”

It was 90 years ago Monday when a 7.8 magnitude earthquake changed Murchison forever. The town held a ceremony with three members of their community who were children when the earthquake struck. It was the third deadliest earthquake in New Zealand history, killing 17 after it struck at 10:17am on June 17, 1929. The quake caused damage in Nelson, Westport and Greymouth, but news travelled slowly and it was almost 24 hours before anyone knew the plight of Murchison.

Light shines on forestry industry Sara Hollyman The spotlight shone on the region’s forestry industry at the inaugural Top of the South Forestry Awards on Friday. More than 500 people packed into the Trafalgar Centre for the awards dinner hosted by comedian Paul Ego. Organisers say it was a chance to celebrate an industry that is “so key” to the region, and an opportunity to acknowledge local industry heroes. The awards attracted 80 nominations across 15 categories, with the ultimate trophy; Skilled Professional of the Year, being awarded to Heather Arnold from Nelson Forests Ltd.

Heather qualified for the top trophy by winning another top spot on the evening; the Woman in Forestry Excellence Award. Heather was described by the judges as a true “expert in their field” who had made a difference both regionally and nationally. They said Heather also stood out through her very high standard of work, how she engages with staff and contractors, and for the leadership she provides within the industry. Tasman region’s Reed Contracting claimed the FICA Crew of the Year Award with judges saying they had made a “very heavy investment in

mechanisation – nearly 100 per cent.” Reed Contracting crew member Ryan Fisher also took away the Tree Faller Excellence (mechanised) Award. Judges said he stood out by consistently “producing a better than standard result” and had increased productivity with the way he operates. Reed Contracting co-owner Brian Reed, whose son Scott runs the crew, says he is proud of the crew who always put in 100 per cent. “We’ve got a good team culture and no one’s bigger than the whole crew, they’re part of a team.

Local author gives it another go for charity Elder abuse Matt McCrorie

campaign

Matt McCrorie

A Richmond author has penned a second book for charity, proving she is determined to use her skills to help people in need. Heather Holmes, who works as a teacher aide at Waimea College, has written her second novel to raise money for the Nelson Tasman Rescue Helicopter Trust. Her first novel, ‘What’s in a name?’ published in 2017, was well received and raised money for the Cancer Society. Heather is a busy woman, “but when I do have any downtime I like to write. I’ve written and sold short stories and won a few competitions, but ‘What’s in a Name?’ was my first attempt at a novel”. The new book, Spies Lies and Secret Agents, follows the adventures of three brothers who inherit running a residential home for the elderly. One day, in with the usual laundry deliveries, they find a large bag of money which disappears almost as soon as it is found. Who does it belong to and where has it gone? A lifelong writer, Heather says she doesn’t remember a time when she didn’t write, illustrating and publishing her first book when she was five with a packet of crayons and a stapler. “It’s my way of relaxing. The stories play out in my head like a film, and I never know how they

A weeklong campaign is hoping to shed some light on the issue of elder abuse. Age Concern Nelson Tasman deals with just over 100 cases of elder abuse each year. Yet only 15% of incidents are reported. Mal Drummond, Elder Abuse advisor at Age Concern, says that there are two current types of financial abuse that have become common recently. There has been an increase in kids and grandkids relying financially on their elderly relatives. One trend is younger relatives who move in with their parents or grandparents because they can’t afford to rent on their own. “They’re placing a financial burden on their parents or grandparents.” Another trend is pressure to give out loans. “We see it often. Kids take a loan out from mum and dad to buy a house, with no intention of paying it back.” Mal says that Elder Abuse is not ok, and the easiest way to stop it happening is to connect with older people. “Go over and have a cup of tea with your older neighbour. Connect with them and see how they’re going.”

Author Heather Holmes, with her two fundraising novels, ‘Spies, Lies, and Secret Agents’ and ‘What’s in a name?’ will end until I get there.” “The books write themselves so take as long as they need.” The first book took Heather about six months, while the new novel took her a year to finish. “I am an early riser, I wake up about 5 am, and that’s when I write.” Heather says that the first book came about because she wanted to raise money for the cancer society, after seeing so many people around her suffer from the disease. “The disease is no respecter of age

or circumstance.” The motivation for the book really came when someone Heather knew well was diagnosed with cancer for the second time. “I wanted to do something to help, and being able to use something I love seemed to be the perfect answer.” Writing furiously to get the story to a publishing standard saw Heather raise over $8,000 for the Cancer Society. Now, she’s decided she wants to give it another crack. The feedback and fundraising

response that she got from her debut novel encouraged Heather to write a second book to raise money for the Nelson Marlborough Helicopter Trust. As soon as people had read the first book, they wanted more. And deciding what charity to choose for her second novel wasn’t hard. “I chose the Rescue Helicopter Trust because, when you hear the sound of the helicopter in the air and look, you know help is on its way.” Every book sold puts $20 towards the Trust.

NMIT maritime award honours late skipper The legacy of a well-loved and respected fisherman lives on in an award for NMIT maritime students who exemplify the qualities of a good ship’s mate. The “Squax” Squires Memorial award is named after the late Peter Richard “Squax” Squires, a skipper from Te Anau who lost his life on the notorious Greymouth Bar in 2000. Crewman Roy Connor, 26, of Nelson, also drowned when their fishing boat Koromiko was rolled over by a wave and swamped while attempting to cross the bar. The Koromiko was washed ashore and Squires’ family donated it to the NMIT New Zealand School of Fisheries, now called the International Maritime Institute of New Zealand. However after experts assessed the boat as being beyond repair, it was sold and the proceeds were put into a scholarship fund. It was decided that the interest from the fund would be used to establish the annual “Squax” Squires Memorial Award, to be given to the most deserving student on the Mate Fishing Vessel Unlimited course. At the end of each course a session is set aside where the students and their tutor discuss the qualities of a good ship’s mate and who among them exemplifies those qualities. “The award recognises the individual’s hard work while on the course and the respect of his

colleagues,” says course tutor Phil Pinniger. “The students vote for the winner and the result is usually unanimous.” A mounted barometer and ship’s clock is purchased and suitably engraved, a lasting award for a hard-working student in a challenging course of study. This year the winner, and 17th mate to receive the award is 28 year old Petar Buovac from Talley’s Fisheries. Peter sails as a second mate on the purse seine Captain M J Souza. Students on the Mate Fishing Vessel Unlimited course have been through the fishing industry from the bottom up, starting as deckhands and typically working for at least 10 years before coming to NMIT. On completion of the 23-week intensive course, graduates emerge as Mates, valued members of the fishing fleet and holders of a highly sought after industry qualification. After 12 months at sea, graduates can apply to complete the Skipper Fishing Vessel Unlimited qualification and take their career to the next level. This qualification allows the holder to captain any fishing vessel of any size, anywhere in the world. For more information about Maritime careers, visit nmit.ac.nz/maritime Business Update. Adv.

Immunisation rates raise fears of outbreak More local parents are choosing not to immunise their children, concerning the local health board. Statistics show that for the month ending April, 15.3 per cent of parents in Nelson Marlborough either declined or opted out of the immunisations due at 8 months and 13.5 per cent for those due at 24 months. “The number of parents who decline children’s vaccinations has increased in Nelson,” says associate director of nursing with the Nelson Marlborough Public Health Service, Jill Clendon. She says if rates are not high enough then outbreak of disease will happen, as we are seeing already with measles and whooping cough. Infant immunisations are offered at six weeks, three months, five months and 15 months. The Government sets milestone targets at 8-months and 24-months. Nationally, for the 24-month target, Nelson Marlborough is currently in the bottom quarter with 8.8 percent of parents declining or opting out. The region is also sitting at a rate of 8 per cent for declines/opt offs for the

Associate director of nursing with the Nelson Marlborough Public Health Service, Jill Clendon. Photo: Kate Russell. 8-month target - the sixth lowest out of 20 districts. Jill says those declining immunisations come from two main groups. “There are people who choose to follow the antivaccination lobby. “Then there are those who delay immunisation due to low levels of health literacy or younger parents.” She says children of parents in the latter group will usually catch up with their vaccinations by the time they are five.

Jill says while the majority are immunised on time, they are working hard to offer information to those sitting on the fence. “We can tell from records which children are overdue and share this information with a relevant family’s general practice.” she says. “Encouraging families to read and understand information from reliable, scientific sources is the most effective way we can try and debunk myths around immunisation.”

Under law, vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles or whooping cough are notified to a Medical Officer of Health, who may write to a child’s childcare centre or school to advise about the risk of disease outbreak. “Healthcare professionals work hard to support whanau to immunise on time, and to have conversations with parents about why immunisation is more than just a personal choice - it’s a community responsibility,” Jill says.

New school play a history lesson is putting on an entirely original school play, thanks to the efforts of creative teachers. The new show, ‘Medieval Madness 2’ is a mockumentary about life in me-

dieval times featuring Baldrick the village idiot. Grant Irvine, who wrote and directed the play along with the help of several others, says that the aim is to educate and entertain at the same time, with an impressive 10-metrewide castle being built as the main prop. Students have been hard at work on the play since the start of the term, rehearsing twice weekly at the start and moving into daily rehearsals in recent weeks. Grant says that the original idea came from a class study about medieval times. “We decided to make learning come to life with re-enactments.” Then, a few years ago, the school was looking for a pro-

duction to put on, so the original class show was expanded to fit 180 kids in six classes. Now, the show has been reworked, while some small parts are the same, new scenes and dances have been added. Grant says it was ‘ideal’ to have a play tailor-made for students, rather than just performing a mainstream play and having to work around the script and already existing scenes and characters. “I can write parts relating to the strengths and interest of the kids, and add small fun parts for teachers, like one being brought to justice by the kids for being a poacher! It also offers the chance for kids to work collaboratively together, as the script is never set in stone.

“It changes a little each week as suggestions are made and new possibilities seen.” It’s not just the actors that get to shine. Pupils have been painting their own wooden shields with their own coat of arms to decorate the venue, and other kids have had the opportunity to learn other new skills beside acting and history. “Some have learnt new skills line uni-cycling, stilt walking, juggling, and dancing.” “It has been a real team effort by all involved,” The performances will be at Hope Community Church on Wednesday, June 26th at 12:30 and 7:00 pm and Thursday, June 27th at 7:00 pm. Tickets can be purchased from the Richmond School office.

A reminder from the Richmond Mall and Police to take care in car parks in winter, especially in wet and icy conditions. A woman was taken to hospital by ambulance after slipping and falling outside Pak N Save last Wednesday. Belinda de Clerq, centre manager at the Richmond Mall, said that people need to be ‘especially careful’ in the carpark in winter. Another mall employee raised concerns about the large number of falls and near-miss incidents happening at the Fresh Choice side of the car park. A timely reminder to use caution in the car park in wet and icy conditions.

Nelson Matters

The Blessing of the Fishing Fleet this Saturday is a uniquely Nelson event that recognises the huge contribution people in the fishing industry make to our community and country. This annual ceremony is about remembrance of the more than 1,000 New Zealand fishers historically lost at sea. Their families have no grave and often limited knowledge of what happened to their loved ones. I have seen in my constituency work with families who have lost loved ones, how this opportunity to remember helps the widows and children come to terms with their loss. This event is also about reinforcing

a strong maritime safety message. We lost 23 commercial fishers in my first year as Nelson’s MP in 1996. We have thankfully not had a major fishing tragedy in Nelson’s commercial fleet for some years but we must never be complacent about the risks. Nelson has a fleet of large vessels, many with more than 50 crew, fishing in some of the most treacherous and remote areas of ocean in the world. I am in awe of the skilled people who work in this industry. These skippers, engineers, deck hands, factory workers and support crews work long hours in tough conditions. They are away for weeks at a time. They need to be

prepared for dealing with sickness and accidents often being hundreds of kilometres from any port or hospital. Those at sea are just a fraction of the 3,000 jobs in Nelson supported by the fishing industry. There are those doing on shore processing, packaging and exporting. There is an army of skilled tradespeople from net makers to marine engineers and marine electronics that keep our fleet seaworthy. There are stevedoring and provedoring businesses. There are also the specialist firms providing legal, insurance and financial services and the fisheries scientists at Plant and Food and the Cawthron Institute.

544 Waimea Road, Nelson

This commemoration is also a celebration of Nelson as the Capital of New Zealand’s seafood industry. We cannot take this for granted with periods last century when it was led out of Dunedin and Auckland. We need to support entrepreneurs like the Talley and Hufflet families and companies like Sealords and King Salmon who invest in this industry and our region. The seafood industry is improving its environmental sustainability. The bycatch of seabirds has been hugely reduced. New vessels and net technologies are improving fuel efficiency. The Quota Management System means New

Zealand’s fishery is one of the best managed in the world. There is more we should do as a community to recognise our fishing and maritime industries. I am a strong supporter of the work of the Trust led by Peter Dawson on a fisheries museum and education centre for Nelson. A big thank you to Mike Smith of the Seafarers Memorial Trust, the Nelson Rotary Club and all the sponsors for events this weekend. Enjoy the fireworks on Friday night. Join us for the Blessing of the Fleet at Wakefield Quay at 12.30pm. Let’s collectively salute all those who work in this Nelson industry. Advt.

Bus Shelter to be re- used The old bus shelter outside the Richmond Police station is currently being taken down, and will be reused at a later date. The previous bus shelter structure was being taken down over the past week,

Headingly Lane works mean water chlorination The Richmond water supply

WEDNESDAY 19 June 2019 will be chlorinated from 18 to 26 June and again from 15 to 18 July. The council says the reason for the further chlorination is because a new water main has been installed along Headingly Lane, and major works are now required to connect this main into the live Richmond Water Supply, and to remove unused connections. This work is expected to take about a month. Chlorination will be turned on at the plant during this time to ensure the water remains safe to drink.

Hunter’s paradise found Steve Page

I was bought up in the 70’s. I began my hunting way back then. As a youngster I read all the books on deerstalking. Rex Forrester’s hunting adventures, helicopter boys and stories written by government deer cullers. Such was the problem with deer that the government hired hunters to, in my opinion, have one big hunting adventure and get paid for it! So, I too got ready for my hunting adventures. Camping with great mates, a deer around every corner and maybe a trophy stag twice a day. At least that what the books said. I bought a sportified Parker Hale 303, a big canvas pack and I was ready. A group of us went shooting. Loaded up the Hq wagon and set out. Living in Christchurch, the first trip was to Lake Sumner. A few pigs, but no deer. Next trip, Whitcombe pass where some of the country’s biggest heads were shot. Never saw a thing. Blue mountains - nothing. West Coast three times and three times nothing. Well, maybe three deer but they were tied under a Hughes 300 scooting across Lake Paringa. Well out of my reach. It took me a while to figure out that while we were probably not the most skilled hunters there

Two more stags that wandered out when while the hunters were making their way down to one they had already shot. were actually no deer. The venison recovery business had seen to that. I had been lied to! Especially by those books. No one could possibly walk around a valley and see 30 or more deer, let alone a trophy head. This was all made up. We turned to wallaby hunting instead and at least then had some success and many great weekends away in the Hunter Hills of Waimate. The paradise that I had dreamed of as a youngster had never existed, or had it? Fast forward 38 years to 2019. Here I was living in Nelson, with 4 sons, youngest being 15 and a pretty keen shooter. He took a job with Waimea Nurseries and worked hard in the pre-Christ-

mas heat to save up for a hunting rifle. I thought he would quit after 2 weeks, he never did. He saved up enough to pop straight into the team at Hunting and Fishing and he bought himself a 6.5 Browning Hells Canyon. It was then we met the new owner Michael Darling. As we got to be quite friendly with him, he kept mentioning this place called Glazebrook. I didn’t pay a lot of attention, but Mike kept showing us pictures of the property and there were deer everywhere! And goats and pigs. Chuck in a mix of fallow and the odd chamois and thar with a sprinkle of ducks and geese. I assumed from those boasts this was a fenced farm and available only to tourists.

Another of Mike’s roles is that he acts as a guide for this property and he offered to take us up there to find out for ourselves. I got very keen when I found out that, while the property is managed and is a working farm, it is not fenced for game animals and it covers some huge territory. It’s also has got a strong attraction for game animals. And I can see why. Several small rivers, plenty of grassy flats and lots of scrub and native forest for the animals to hide in. A perfect environment. In fact, so good that the owners have had to start a genuine culling process to maintain the quality of the heads. They are visited by some of the best hunters from around the world and so good is

the environment, it’s proving very popular with bowhunters. We arranged to go up there for two days. Did I have to pay? Yes. Did it cost much? No. Depending on what you want to hunt the absolute ease and comfort that was offered was well worth any small cost. I am too old to sleep on rocks in the pouring rain, getting eaten alive by sandflies. I did that up Rough creek in ‘85! At Glazebrook there are chalets with hot showers and comfy beds. The dining room is full of wood and deer heads and trophies. Cold beer and wine flows as the in-house chef prepares all meals including breakfast and dinner! What a treat that was. We sat on the veranda and watched a couple of big boars and groups of goats meander their way around the hillside. The first morning Mike took us out shooting and access for the most part was in a small 3 seater muv. Not 15 minutes from camp we came around a bend to see 3 big stags grazing on the side of the hill. They looked up and, while watching us every now and then, kept eating. Mike glassed all three and signalled to Stan that the middle of the group had quite a nice head. So, at 270 yards uphill Stan dropped the stag with one shot and what a nice animal

Win for local golfers The Special Olympics Nelson Golf Team competed in the event at Rarangi Golf Course on Saturday, 15th June, and returned victorious. On a cold day in Marlborough, all athletes taking part in the Level One Skills Golf Event received a very warm welcome from the host team. After a very close, well organised event, Hannah Ellis won the Division One Event with 61 points. Reon Enoka won the Division Two event with 64 points. Tony Naylor, Head Golf Coach, and Heather Bryant, Assistant Golf Coach, who escorted the eight local players, said they were extremely proud of all the local athletes who competed in the event. Wendy Littlejohn, chairperson of Special Olympics Nelson,

said, “it was satisfying to see how far the local golfers have come - all the golfers’ scores were extremely close, which shows what can be achieved with regular coaching and dedication”. Each of the players competed and performed admirably on the day with the encouragement of their many supporters, parents and spectators who came to cheer the guys on. Their fine sportsmanship is exemplified by the Special Olympics Oath; “Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt” The next Special Olympics Golf training session will be on Thursday, 20th June at 2.00pm, at Greenacres Golf Club. For more information please contact Tony Naylor on 021 133 8688.

national 16–22 volunteer JUNE week 2019 National Volunteer Week celebrates the collective contribution of the 1.2 million volunteers who enrich Aotearoa New Zealand. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the way that volunteering connects all people and all communities within New Zealand. It is also a chance to celebrate and thank all those who volunteer in our communities every year! National Volunteer Week 2019 runs from June 16th to June 22nd. Volunteer work and donations keep many organisations, such as sports clubs, nursing homes, religious organisations, play centres, cultural groups, and youth groups functioning and providing services to the communities they operate in. National Volunteer Week is a membership organisation whose aspiration is that volunteering is valued as part of who we are

national 16–22 volunteer JUNE week 2019 Volunteer Nelson has a number of different activities planned for National Volunteer Week. The Manager at Volunteer Nelson, Gordon Oldfield, says many people are aware of the activities and contribution of volunteers during civil emergencies, as was the case with the fires in Tasman and Nelson earlier this year. “However, there are thousands of volunteers contributing to community organisations every day,” Gordon says. “About one in three people in the Nelson Tasman region are involved in volunteering on a regular basis. Their contribution covers a wide range of areas like the environment, education, health and community sports. In fact the economic value nationally of volunteering has been calculated to be $4.6 billion." Gordon says, Volunteer Nelson will be presenting several Car Company Community Champion Awards during National Volunteer Week. These are volunteers who are regarded as exceptional in the work that they do. In addition, a celebratory event will be held to acknowledge the achievements of participants in the volunteer Nelson Migrant volunteering programme. These volunteers are all newcomers to Nelson who do not speak English as their first language. They have been supported in their volunteering and have made a significant contribution to the community.

Excitement is building ahead of the 2019 Nelson Hospitality Awards happening on the 9th September. The awards are a celebration of excellence in the hospitality industry. Presented by the Restaurant Association of New Zealand and Hospitality New Zealand the awards recognise the hard-working owners, workers, suppliers and establishments who make it all happen in the Nelson-Tasman region. Founded in 1972, the biennial awards are back this year to celebrate the region’s best in the local hospitality industry – the professionals who make a positive impact on the local café, dining and accommodation scene, whether it’s the best bartender or waiter, the stand-out café, the top chef, the best accommodation provider or the finest restaurant. The 2017 New Zealand King Salmon Nelson Hospitality Awards saw local restaurant and café businesses take out categories such as ‘Barista of the Year,’ ‘Head Chef of the Year,’ ‘Outstanding Ambience and Service,’ ‘Outstanding Ethnic Cuisine,’ ‘Best Restaurant of the Year,’ and ‘Best local supplier.’ The Nelson Hospitality Awards committee say that the awards are all about “celebrating hospitality in our area. These people work very hard all year round and it’s their opportunity to be recognised for all that

work,” Online nominations for the 2019 awards just opened on June 14th and will close on Monday, July 1st. Then finalists for each category will be decided and then the public will get their chance to vote for this year's winners!. The committee are thrilled to have NZ King Salmon as a major sponsor of this event again and look forward to seeing the public and industry get involved and start nominating. To put in a nomination, go to the Nelson Hospitality Awards Facebook page and find the link at the top, this year there will be 13 different categories. These include: ‘Barista of the Year’, for which the criteria is ‘professional and passionate about coffee making – elevates coffee to a true art form’ and ‘Head Chef of the Year,’ who is ‘an inspiration in all aspects of cooking’ plus ‘creates great food and runs a superb, consistent kitchen.’ The most talented ‘new name’ on the local scene will be named ‘Up and coming Chef of the Year.’ He/she is ‘someone to watch’ and is ‘one of the next generation of great chefs in Nelson.’ Other categories are: ‘Outstanding Host Responsibility,’‘Outstanding Beverage List’ plus ‘Best Accommodation Provider.’ Online people’s choice categories include: ‘Bar of the Year,’ for ‘a bar which is recognised for consistently high standards,’ and

Manager’s Snippett’s Wayne Williams Well, what an excellent day we had AGM day, Sunday 26th May. A very good meeting, with visits from our area delegate, Glen Beattie, Clubs NZ life member, John Taylor, and Lucy & Kate from Clubs NZ head office in Wellington. The meeting delivered a summary of very good results for the year, and where the funds had been spent, followed by our plans for the coming year, and further ahead. This was all followed by some refreshments and top finger food by our caterer Phil, delivered to everyone’s tables by mem-

bers of the Club Golf Section. Thanks team. Some great entertainment from local duo KRAMIT, an awesome afternoon. For those who attended for all or part of the day, I am sure you would have enjoyed yourselves. It was great to see Lucy (Operations Manager) and Kate (Sports Convenor) also getting across to the Squash and Bowls facilities to see what was going on around the place, and there was plenty for them to see as both facilities had tournaments running. They were both suitably impressed, well done to everyone involved. So as the weather starts to close in on us for the

17

winter, not bad so far, we have finished the roofing work and painting of the Squash building and the Caravan Park amenities block, with some more upgrades to follow shortly. We are hoping to have the hall toilet facilities totally revamped over the winter period also, and are looking at possible building changes, and necessary parking changes. On a day to day basis, the Club has had plenty of conference room bookings, group lunches, and general club member patronage, so all is tracking well. Let’s keep up the good work, and have some FUN. Cheers everyone.

Tuesday, July 9th at 7pm (first night registration from 6.40pm) in the Club Waimea Hall. Thereafter lessons will be held every Tuesday from 7pm until 8pm until Tuesday, August 13th. Lessons will be $30 per person for six weeks of lessons. Please note flat heeled shoes are required for dancing. Partners are preferred but all welcome. Any questions please phone Errol Tombs 0275 474 008.

Ageing Gracefully and AvantiPlus Richmond owner Mike Anderson says there are so many reasons why people of all ages are choosing to buy one. “E-bikes provide more stability because they help you go at a decent speed rather than ambling along at slow speed. So many people give up riding for one reason or another, due to a health issue, or they’re too busy, or they may have packed on a

few pounds. We see people after a month of riding and they’re a completely different person – they’ve lost weight, they look really happy; E-bikes are really great for your well-being!” When you buy an E-bike from AvantiPlus, a trained team member will show you how to use the motor and gears, plus you’ll receive a full backup service! not just a job, it’s also my passion, d it was time to set up my own Travel Managers Group.

NBHH has been running for five years and since starting with just one home, Sian now has a portfolio of 40 plus homes across Nelson, Mapua and Golden Bay. Alongside NBHH, Sian also sells real estate for Harcourts. Whilst dealing with out of town buyers, she saw a gap in the market for holiday home management services. With no one to refer these buyers to, Sian quickly stepped in and hasn’t looked back. Most often home owners are based out of town or even overseas, Sian ensures that all home owners are secure in the fact that NBHH looks after their investment like it was their own. When owners return home for their own holidays, they can just walk in and relax. As well as the property businesses, Sian also helps run a gym with her partner Karyn, so life is busy. Whenever possible Sian heads over to her favourite place Golden Bay for some R&R. “Van, dogs, bikes, paddle boards and tramping gear and I’m in my happy place.”

and then Sunday the 250km long Enduro race. Nelson’s Alex Bright (Class One) is new to the sport, but he sure knows how to get his off-road car moving. Alex took 7th, 5th and a 1st in the stadium racing on Saturday. He

was 9th overall, 6th in class one in the enduro. This gave him 3rd place in for the weekend. Greg Winn (Class One) had a dismal day Saturday but came out firing at Sunday’s Enduro and stomped down amazing lap times to take out the overall victory for

The Parker Shield running event at Cable Bay Adventure Park in Saturday had everything a cross-country race should have. There was lots of mud, slippery tracks, hills, stream crossings and rough grassy areas. More than 60 competitors relished the challenging 2.4km laps. In the senior grade, Chris Sharland once again took charge of the race right from the start, completing his four laps in a very slick time of 38 min 12 sec with the fastest senior woman, Iona Kelly, finishing in 50 min 17 sec. Dan Bush was the first of the veteran runners home, steaming around the three laps in 29 mins flat with Christine Lear, the first veteran woman, finishing in an equally commendable time of 37 min 47 sec.

Wanderers Sports Club Report Wanderers women roll past Motueka

The Taylors Wanderers women’s team rode the momentum of three tries from Ariana Te Kawa Wiremu to beat Motueka High School 50-10 on Saturday. Friday night saw Taylor’s Wanderers Women’s team coaches Ian Biggs and Wayne Bateman scrambling for players with a couple of injuries and illness hitting the team, leaving them with one reserve player. Along with a cloud hanging over the long-awaited return of captain Tamara Silcock things were looking bleak. A quick pledge to players, some new signings from Biggs’ Nelson College for Girls and some family commitment reshuffling, saw the bench eventually accommodate four reserve players. Silcock started but 20 minutes into the match again resided on the bench, handing the captaincy back to Amanda Sim who as usual displayed a great performance. Motueka also were caught by the player shortage and started the game with just 14 but gradually filled the field and bench with team members returning from morning netball duties. Wanderers women dominated however, both in numbers and performance, once again gelling as a unit and bringing together some great connections after their pleasing performance in the 32-32 draw last week against last season’s champion side Moutere Smart backline connections brought about a try frenzy with Wiremu managing a hattrick, Staci Kohe scored twice and Amelia Hammett, Tempest Ropiha and Natania Ngawhau all provided a try. The forward pack displayed

From back, left to right: Jo Saleil, Amanda Sim, Leila Nisbett, Sophie Hart, Cumorah-lee Aioupotea, Alisi Seigafo, Britt Harrington, Lisa Johnson, Ian Biggs. Photo: Supplied. great structure and continuity throughout the game with great performances by the whole pack, being rewarded with individual tries to Gina Healey and ShakiaLee Biggs who slotted seven of the 10 conversions and added a penalty goal. The team head into a bye this week but will not rest as coaches Biggs and Bateman have set up a training camp day in place of a game in order to continue the excellent development within the group. The Taylors Wanderers division one team hosted Marist at Centennial Park. The first half was a drastically im-

proved period and with the score 7-6 to the visitors, optimism existed within the Wanderers’ ranks and among the supporters for an upset. However, in the second period, Marist showed why they are the worthy Tasman Trophy champions with an exhibition of control and flow that resulted in 37 unanswered points. While they were assisted by some ineffectual defence by Wanderers at times, Marist’s ability to maintain possession and continue to apply pressure with a varied attack and excellent support play, was particularly impressive, as reflected in the final 44-7 score.

Players to impress for Taylors Wanderers were Will Hamilton again for his continued work rate and aggression, Chris Hala’ufia who continues to develop and play above his age, and Tone Vaka for his straighter attack and committed defence. A fortnight ago, the Golden Bay Motueka and Town U52kg trials were held at Sports Park with around 70 keen rugby players giving it their all to make the sole JAB representative team. It was very impressive to see the effort and skills the players showed, and Wanderers acknowledge and thank all the players who trailed.

Congratulations to the following players have been selected for the Golden Bay Motueka U52kg Squad for 2019. They are Luca Austin, Aiden Burke, Gavin Holder, Harry Horncastle, Will Horncastle, Harrison Inch, Jacob Jarrett, Kobi Johnson Stevens, Sarah Jones, Alex Thomsonand Luke Woodwiss. The sponsor of the week was Footprint Signs and the Volunteer of the Week, sponsored generously by SouthfuelsSpring Grove was the Women’s manager Sam Burling. This week the division one team is at home against Nelson in a third versus fourth contest.

Well-rounded weekend for AFC It was a pretty even round of football for Richmond AFC on Saturday with 5 wins and 4 losses recorded across the 9 senior teams. The wins came from the Fresh Choice Richmond 1st team who had a well-deserved 3 – 1 win away to Wakefield. The first half was a fairly even affair, with Richmond, having a slight edge in possession, moving the ball quickly, but they were unable to find the back of the net by the break. Wakefield came out strong at the start of the second spell, but the scoring was opened by long time Richmond club member Glen Pearless as he rose to meet a Joseph Rozga corner and headed the ball home powerfully.

The second goal was also scored by Pearless when he converted a penalty, and the third was a great finish by Alex Lindbom who was playing in an unfamiliar midfield position. Coach Clay Wilhelmus was impressed with his young team’s composure and attitude, and was happy with every player as they kept to the game plan for the full 90 minutes. The Richmond Hornbills 2nd team had a 4 – 0 win over Motueka, the Tasman Auto Electric Bogans 4th team beat their Wakefield opponents 3 – 0, the About Beauty at Monaco Swans narrowly beat Golden Bay 1 – 0, and the Hothouse Foxes were too strong for Nelson Suburbs winning 5 – 0. The other senior scores saw the

Fresh Choice Richmond team well beaten by 2nd division league leaders FC Nelson Locomotive 7 goals to 1, the Thompson Daly Chartered Accountants Thistle 3rd team were thrashed 9 – 2 by their FC Nelson opponents, the Global Wings Travel Hornbills 3rd team went down 2 – 1 against Motueka, and the Sprig and Fern Richmond Stags lost 3 – 1 to FC Nelson Masters. Earlier in the day, the Helen Ruston Mike Pero 14th Grade Red Devils had a 3 – 1 win over the Nelson Girls College team, while the Green Acres 13th Grade Heat, The Point of Sale Company U16 Ninjas, the Helen Ruston U16 Development Team, and The Car Company U19 Glory, each had a loss.

Over the next month we will be connecting a new water main on Headingly Lane into the live water supply network for Richmond. At times during this work we will chlorinate the Richmond water supply as a precaution to make sure it remains safe to drink while the pipe is connected. Chlorination dates • 18 – 26 June

Apply for a rates rebate before 30 June The deadline for applications for a rates rebate for the 2018/2019 rating year is 30 June 2019. Rebates are based on your household income, the amount of your rates, and the number of dependents you have. You can estimate if you’re eligible for a rebate using your income for the year ending 31 March 2018 at dia.govt.nz – search phrase ‘rates rebate’. Application forms and more information available at Council offices or online at tasman.govt.nz.

• 15 – 18 July The work is weather dependent, so keep an eye on the Tasman District Council Facebook page and website for any updates. • Using a filter jug

Find details for all our current consultations at www.tasman.govt.nz/feedback.

• Chilling the water in the fridge first before drinking Advice for owners of pet fish

In addition to chlorination, on Wednesday 9 July there will be a temporary change to the Richmond water supply that will increase the nitrate level. We recommend you do not change the water in your fish tank on this day as a sudden change in nitrate levels can be shock to fish. The change is due to a planned shutdown of a water trunk main.
