Nelson MP Nick Smith has admitted that he regrets likening Parliament to a ‘Nazi Establishment’ last week, but says that he was frustrated, and that the comments came after a week of being ‘unfairly targeted by the speaker.’ Parliament’s Serjeant-in-Arms removed National MP Nick Smith from the house late on Thursday evening, last week. Nick was asked to leave the house that afternoon by Speaker Trevor Mallard after he raised a point of order, saying that the government was unfairly attacking the opposition. When Mallard said “That is a problem for me to deal with, not the member,” Nick replied, “But you don’t.” He was then asked to leave. Nick returned to the house in the early evening, again being asked to leave, before returning for the third time just before midnight, while the House passed laws under urgency throughout the night. Assistant Speaker Adrian Rurawhe called the Serjeant-at-Arms to remove Smith. “What sort of a Nazi establishment is running the place, seriously?” Smith said as he left the house. National leader Todd Muller said that the comment was unacceptable and that he had spoken to Smith about the incident. “Despite that intense frustration, it was a very

I’d head south. Probably down to Queenstown. We do a lot with classic cars touring and it’s nice to go back to the places you’ve passed through and spend a bit more time.

I generally go overseas. I don’t like to travel distances on my own, so I’ll usually just do day trips around our own area. Like over to Motueka.

Smith fires up, regrets comment fRoM PAGE 1 ill-advised thing to say and I’ve told him so,” Muller said. On Monday, Smith said that he regretted making the comment, but that he was frustrated because the Speaker would not tell him when he would be allowed to return to the house. “I do regret making that comment,” Nick says. National MP Gerry Brownlie left the house as well, and was told he could return at the same time as Dr Smith. Smith said that despite phoning the the Speakers office and the office of the Whips several times, and was left without an answer as to when he could return. Smith claims that speaker Trevor Mallard is out to get him. “The previous week I had asked about how much the slide in Par-

liament cost, which was $572,000, for a slide! That caused some embarrassment for the speaker.” Then, on Tuesday last week, Smith questioned the cost of Trevor Mallard’s defamation case, which has cost the taxpayer nearly $80,000. Mallard faces legal action after saying last year that a rapist was working at Parliament. Smith was further frustrated that Mallard released a statement to the press on Friday about his costs, rather than answering Dr Smith’s question directly. “My view is that the unfair treatment that I received from the speaker was directly related to his grumpiness of me for asking him an uncomfortable question, countered by removing me from parliament,” Smith says. “In my view, it was an abuse of power.”

Spending up, rates stay the same Matt McCrorie Reporter

matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz

A whopping $63.7 million has been allocated for spending on capital projects in the Tasman District Council’s annual plan for 2020-2021. The figure has jumped up by $17.9million from what was planned in the Council’s LongTerm Plan, published in 2018. The annual plan was adopted by the council on Thursday last week and has seen significant overhauls since it was considered in November and December last year, due to the impacts of Covid-19. In April, councillors agreed to a zero rates revenue increase, to aid residents struggling to deal with the financial impacts of the worldwide pandemic. A 2.46 per cent increase had been planned for 2020-2021 under the council’s long-term plan. The council now expects rates revenue to sit at $77.7 million, down from the $78.9 million that was forecast in the original plan. The plan also outlines that the zero rates revenue increase does not mean that residents won’t see an increase in the

Tasman mayor Tim King. The Tasman District Council approved its annual plan last week, with an increase in capital projects. rates that they pay. It says that actual increase varies on the mix of services received, and that residents who will see an increase in their rates are those connected to the council’s rural water schemes, like residents in Eighty Eighty Valley, Redwood Valley, or Dovedale. The council also resolved not to produce a consultation document or formally consult on the Annual Plan. The main charges to the capital

work programme, compared to the long term, include the Port Tarakohe Upgrade which will get an extra $10.2 million if it can gain central government funding. Transportation projects will be $1.9million higher than expected, with NZTA subsidies $0.6million more than previously estimated. An extra $3.9million will be spend on improving drinking water to meet the new government regulations. $2.1 million has been included for maintenance in council buildings. This is currently being looked at, as the Covid lockdown changed working practices. Meanwhile, the budget for wastewater has been decreased by $1.4 million due to project timing changes. Net debt for the council has also shifted, with the forecast now sitting at $199.7 million. Tasman mayor Tim King says that it will be a significant challenge to work through with the lower revenue than council had anticipated “With everything we are facing at the moment – there will be some difficult decisions in the year ahead.”

Hall looks great after renovation Jacqui Rawson Fees slashed for campgrounds

Campground operators have seen some relief thanks to a move from the Tasman District Council to reduce council registration fees. Operators of the 44 registered campgrounds and 29 commercial vessels in Tasman will receive a 50 per cent reduction in their registration fees. The slashing of fees will result in an income drop of around $20,000, which will be found by either reducing costs or finding other non-rate income to compensate. Usually the council receives $27,000 annually from the 29 commercial vessel operators and $14,000 from the 44 registered campgrounds in the district.

Missing boy found

Police successfully found a Nelson teenager who was reported missing in the area on Friday last week. Police sent out a call for information on Saturday morning after a 17 year old named Bradley, no last name given, did not return to his home. Police reported that Bradley was found on Sunday evening.

Boost for libraries

Tasman libraries are in line for a funding boost after the Government has provided an extra $60 million for libraries, with $30 million specifically targeted for public libraries. National Library, Public Libraries of NZ (PLNZ) and Library and Information Association of NZ Aotearoa (LIANZA) are working on what this means for libraries, the priorities for the funding and how it will be allocated to individual councils.

The Age Concern’s activity hall has had a much-needed facelift, as huge renovations have brought the muchused building up-to-date over the last seven months. “We had to give the hall a much-needed reno”, says Caroline Budge, manager of Age Concern When the building next door to Age Concern’s existing office building came up for lease a few years ago they grabbed the opportunity to make use of the space for their organisation’s needs. The Age Concern hall was originally built by the Lions as a community project in the 1970s. However, after nearly five decades since being built and having little work done, the hall was in need of a spruce up. “We wanted a warm and inviting hub for people to come and feel comfortable

Caroline Budge, from Age Concern Nelson Tasman, with Archdeacon Andy Joseph. Photo: Jacqui Rawson. in,” Caroline says. So Age Concern, who a selffunding charity, straight away turned their focus onto fundraising. Through grants, pub charities and fundraising through members, clients, and other businesses, they raised the equivalent of $175k for the hall’s changes. As well as renovations,

which included a brandnew kitchen, an internal access area between their existing building and the hall was constructed. On top of that, two new offices were built to meet the growth in staff numbers which had caused staff to be squashed up together in the existing building. Building began on the pro-

ject in October last year and the final touches, such as painting, were due to start just as lockdown level 4 began. Fast forward to the end of lockdown 2 and those final touches got picked up again until all work was completed mid-June. Previously the hall has been the scene for popular activities such as the popular singing group ‘Sing yourself well’ every Tuesday morning and the Age Concern ‘Tea and Talk’ sessions on a Wednesday, which will continue. But Age Concern thought, rather than fill up the hall’s schedule with activities, they’d use the time of change to ask the community what activities they would prefer to see taking place in the hall. “We’ve just put in a wee suggestion box”, says Caroline. This way the activities calendar will fill up as ideas come to light and the hall will be utilised as it was intended - to facilitate activities for the community.

Residents want more say Matt McCrorie A group of Richmond residents are advocating for more representation as the town continues to expand. Richmond resident Robin Schiff is no stranger to advocating for her community. While living in Kaitaia, Robin spent 8 years advocating for Te Hiku Sports Hub. “What I realised through that process, is that a community really needs to be engaged with the decision-making process,” she says. Now Robin is turning that focus to Richmond, and she believes that a community board is needed. While Golden Bay and Motueka both have community boards and councillors, the only

elected representation Richmond has is its councillors. With Richmond growing rapidly, Robin says that development needs to be done in a conscious way if it will turn into a community that fosters healthy lifestyles and engagement. “The community has a responsibility, and I think a community board is a great vehicle for that,” Robin says. Richmond ward councillor Dana Wensley is backing the call for a community board. “We have a fast-growing population, and community boards put in submissions and turn up to meetings and say ‘this is what the community actually needs.’” Dana’s fellow Richmond ward

councillor Kit Mailing says that he is wary of the cost that a community association would incur. “I think that if all four Richmond councillor’s were active in the community, representation wouldn’t be an issue,” he says. His comments come after fellow Richmond ward councillor Mark Greening has been questioned over his poor attendance at council meetings and workshops this year. Kit says that councillors should be engaged with their community, face-to-face. “For Greening, doing it by email from Wellington is just not how you do it. You go out and see residents, face-to-face. That’s our job.”

Councillor Dana Wensley and Richmond resident Robin Schiff are lobbying for Richmond to have its own community board. Photo: Matt McCrorie. Development has begun on further urban expansion on Salisbury Road in Richmond. Land is currently being cleared on land next to Salisbury Girls School, and The Waimea Weekly understands that the land will be used to create a block of new residential units. Resource consent for the project is currently pending. According to qv.co.nz, the property was sold in November 2019. Photo: Matt McCrorie.

Property Weekly proves popular frOm PaGE 1 companies, the opportunity to work with a locally-owned publication. With stands in popular locations like the City Centre Arcade, Richmond Mall, supermarkets and more, the magazines have been flying out of stands. Distribution contractor Karl Hadfield, who also oversees the delivery of the Nelson Weekly and Waimea

Weekly newspapers, says he’s been shocked at how popular the magazine is. “Every Thursday morning we have people waiting while we fill up stands. At the Richmond Mall last week I handed out about 12 copies before I’d even had the chance to fill the stand up. It’s crazy and it’s happening all over the place.” Property Weekly launched printing 8000 copies but have increased that to 8500 from this

week to keep up with demand. Karl says in many other locations there will be just four or five copies left. “Last week was a good example, we delivered about 100 copies from every stand in the region and most of the stands had just a couple left.” Publisher Steve Page says the popularity of the magazine is good news for people selling their homes. “It means that if

your agent is using Property Weekly you’re getting your house in front of a heck of a lot of people and that’s what selling anything is about – getting it in front of potential buyers.” For a full list of places to pick up a free copy of the Property Weekly, see page 25 of this newspaper. If you’re selling your home and want to ensure it’s seen by those reading Property Weekly, talk to your real estate agent.

Lights on for cyclists Matt McCrorie Tasman cyclists have got a helping hand this winter, thanks to local Police. Cyclists are being reminded that bike lights are a legal requirement during the shorter winter daylight hours and the best way of being seen and keeping safe. Early last week, the Road Safety Coordinators from Tasman District Council and Nelson City Council joined members of the Police Impairment Prevention

Team in various locations as part of a joint Cycle Safety campaign. Cyclists and pedestrians who were stopped and did not have lights or any high-visibility clothing were offered a free set of bike lights, flashing arm bands and a Hi-Viz vest. Those who are out on their bike and stopped by the police without bike lights or a helmet could be stung with a fine of $55 per offence. There are plans to hold similar stops in other areas of Tasman and Nelson. Special Olympics Nelson were delightful to receive their Basketball teams new strip, which arrived last week thanks to two businesses, Energy and Extracts and Beach Haven Cottages. Coach Wayne Bowen says that the team is very appreciate of the support from local business, and that they are currently in the process of organising games, with regionals next year. ‘Put us on the Nelson Committee’ Matt McCrorie After 12 years, Neighbourhood Support Waimea is being dissolved. But it’s all not bad news. A new group, Neighbourhood Support Top of the South will be formed in its place, combining Nelson, Marlborough, and Waimea. Nelson-Waimea Neighbourhood Support Co-ordinator, Aniquah Stephenson, says that the new organisation will increase the groups effort in the community. “Rather than these organisations being separate and duplicating work, we can have one person managing these three areas,” she says. Aniquah says that the move will enable co-ordinators and volunteers to have more time to be out in the community, rather than writing funding applications and filling out paperwork. “It may seem like we are all merging, it’s more for efficiency and effectiveness with funding. We can work in a more co-ordinated way with emergency services and councils,” Aniquah says. “We want people to know that we are in the process of change, and this change will be beneficial.” Marty Price, who was the former Neighbourhood Support Coordinator for Waimea and has

been involved since the group’s foundation in 2012, says that he will be advocating to make sure that the Waimea community voice is still heard. “I’m really proud of what we have been able to achieve over the last 8 years.” When Marty started in November 2012, there were 25 Community Support street groups. Now there are 180. He says that Neighbourhood Support is ‘hugely important.’ “It’s about reconnecting our communities.” For a lot of people, lockdown was a good example of how some members of the community live in isolation constantly. “I’m extremely proud of the work that has been done over the 8 years. We’ve had our highs and lows, but it has been amazing.” Despite the Waimea group being dissolved, Marty says that he will be pushing for a strong Waimea voice. “I’ve made the decision to stay involved because I have that commitment to Waimea. I’ve got that ingrained history.” “I want to ensure that our voice as Waimea is still heard.” Marty and fellow Waimea member Sam Kearny are both applying for positions on the new board for the Neighbourhood Support Top of the South. “We need a few local voices.”

Marty Price, former co-ordinator for Neighbourhood Support Waimea since its inception in 2012, with Sam Kearny, a new member of Neighbourhood Support. Now that Neighbourhood Support Waimea has been dissolved and merged with other groups to form a ‘Top of the South’ Neighbourhood Support, Marty and Sam are aiming to get on the new board. They argue that Waimea needs a strong voice in the new set-up going forward. Photo: Matt McCrorie.

Fridge becomes kids’ library Jacqui Rawson I had only just sat down on the Creed family’s couch when twoyear-old Edward came over with his ‘You Shouldn’t Touch Dragons’ book to share with me. “The kids just love books and they had so many that we wanted to let everyone else in the community make use of them”, says Jasmine. Redoing their kitchen left the family with an unused cupboard which they decided would be the ideal place to store the excess of their children’s growing collection of books. But building onto that original idea, they decided to store them and the cupboard outside, near the footpath, so others could help themselves. They used social media to let people know about the books and people started coming. They came to take books but also to drop books off. So many books that Tim and Jasmine decided they were going to need to replace their old kitchen cupboard with some-

thing a little bigger and dryer for the books. Nelson Golf Club came through with a no-longer-used, two-door fridge which only required a little bit of care by Tim to make it fully functional as an outdoor book exchange. It also received new purpose-specific branding through a decorative paint job by Jasmine which included painted handprints from Elizabeth. The glass doors of the fridge make it easier to see what’s inside and, with shelving, Jasmine said it’ll be a whole lot tidier than the previous kitchen cupboard option. The idea is for a book exchange; take some, bring them back or not. Jasmine’s not too concerned about whether the requirements of a true book exchange are met. The object is to share both the benefit and the love of reading and if that’s happening, then that’s the best result. Tim, who works with auto parts, said his favourite book is the A to Z of car parts, which he has shared with the children.

Music legend mentors students Matt McCrorie Reporter

The Former frontman of the New Zealand band ‘Midnight Youth’ called in to Waimea College this week, to pass down his industry knowledge to young music students. Jeremy Redmore has more than a decade of experience in the music industry. The band’s debut album, ‘The Brave Don’t Run’, was released in 2009 and peaked at number two on the New Zealand Album Chart. The album was certified platinum in New Zealand in December 2009. Since leaving the group in 2012, Redmore has released two solo albums. “I was asked, a few years ago, to go into schools and talk to kids about my experience in the music industry. I jumped at the chance.” Since 2001, the New Zealand Music Commission has been putting industry professionals into schools to work with aspiring musicians and teachers.

The Musicians Mentoring in Schools Programme serves 65 schools each year, and has involved over 150 mentors from the Music industy in the last 20 years. Jeremy says that he never got the same sort of opportunity when he was young. “I really missed that kind of element as a school student, having people from the real world come into school and tell of their experience of the industry.” While he may be the one teaching, Jeremy says that he sometimes learns more than the students do. “I learn so much from it. “I come in here and I am preaching, and often I get to the end of my sermon and then I go ‘oh actually, I’m not even doing that myself ’,’ - it’s really selfreflective.” Jeremy remembers his own experience getting started in the music industry when he was young. “It’s really tough if you leave school and get into the industry, and it’s tough to know who to talk to. It can be quite a lonely in-

dustry, there are a lot of people trying to take advantage of you.” Jeremey hopes that his time mentoring young people can help them avoid making the same mistakes that he made. “I’ve signed terrible contracts, but if you don’t have that sort of mentor relationship you make those mistakes, and if kids aren’t making those mistakes, then I’ve done my job.” Lily Chalmers, a year 12 student music at Waimea College, says that learning from an industry professional has been invaluable for her. “It’s really cool to get him to come in and share his knowledge,” she says. “Our teachers are great but it’s so good to get that industry knowledge.” Music teacher Nick Sharpe says that it’s ideal to have somebody with real industry experience mentoring his students. “The mentors have a wealth of experience that I haven’t particularly got, that can be passed on to them and make them better musicians.”

Dear Readers, Are you confused about the strength of the real estate market? I would be too if I wasn’t actively involved in listing and selling property in our region. I have not seen any decline in property values and at the time of writing this I am preparing several offers for a lovely Brightwater property - that is not a sign of a property crash. There are buyers out there waiting for new listings to come to the market. Thinking of selling, please give me an opportunity to demonstrate how I can benefit you and your sale and at an industry standard commission. Warm Regards,

Pioneer growers and sweet, sweet Agnes Jacqui Rawson Reporter

jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz

In the early 1970’s a young couple were told that growing grapes in the Nelson region simply wouldn’t work. They went ahead and planted vines anyway. Seifrieds, the family-owned and run business is now the winner of a magnitude of awards and producers of a large portion of the New Zealand export market. “Dad was one of a family of six boys who grew up on an apple orchard in Austria”, says daughter Heidi SeifriedHoughton. Heidi, along with sister Anna and brother Chris, work in the family business that Hermann and Agnes Siefried established in the 1970’s. Hermann knew that where apples would grow, so would grapes. And although no bank was willing to financially back his belief, they scrapped together enough to buy land and get their first vines underway in 1973. Agnes, a New Zealander who was a Nayland College teacher when they first met, joined Hermann from the start of setting up their vineyard in the Moutere Valley. One of the first tasks was the lengthy process of hand -grafting different vines together to propagate the vines. Heidi says, “grafting new vines by hand onto rootstock was something that was not done at the time.” Those two hectares of vines were the beginning of the

Now the family business exports to 25 countries and has 10 vineyards. They do all their own bottling using New Zealand glass, New Zealand screw tops and New Zealand boxes. And they keep winning awards and being recognised for their champion wines. The latest indorsement came last week as the Sweet Agnes

Reisling dessert wine was selected as part of the Fine Wines of New Zealand Programme 2020. This programme recognises excellence in wine, provenance, consistency, and a minimum of seven years of production. The Sweet Agnes Reisling is not new to winning awards with 16 trophies and 46 gold medals under her belt. “It’s our most awarded wine,”

says Anna, who is the sales and marketing part of the family team. This dessert wine, which is described as luscious and intense, is a favourite both locally and internationally. Named after Agnes who herself is described as sweet, the wine has been around since 2006 and is a true reflection of a pioneering spirit that has paid off for both a family and a district.

Just a thought... Denise Smith Salvation Army At present our music team is learning a new song called ‘Way Maker.’ The words in the song say, “You are Way Maker, miracle worker, promise keeper light in the darkness My God, that is who you are.” I can testify personally to each one of these statements. In many different times, and in many different ways, God has led me throught it when I have not been certain in the way ahead. I personally have seen miracles in my own life as well as in the lives of others. The verse from the song continues, ‘Even when I don’t see it, You’re working, even when I don’t feel it, You’re working, You never stop, You never stop working. You never stop, you never stop working.’ For many people in our world today, they are uncertain and they are worried about their future and what it will mean for them. If ever there was a time for our faith to truly count, it is now. As hard as it is to comprehend, God has been working in the midst of all of our isolation and fear. Be assured. God will continue to work his plans out in each of our lives, in different ways.

I have a quote hanging on my wall (from Holley Gerth ) that is a very good reminder that we are overcomers. ‘We are more than Conquerors. We are stronger than we know and braver than we feel.’ Isaiah 41:10 reminds us, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” As difficult as this time has been in our city of Nelson, I have heard that people have also been saying some positive things. ‘We have re-connected as a family unit.’ ‘We are enjoying hanging out together more as a family.’ ‘I am closer to God as I have had more time to spend time with him.”’ As I am relatively new to the Nelson and Tasman region, only been here since the beginning of this year, I am grateful to God for the opportunity to make new friends. It takes time to get to know people and build relationships. There is a saying that goes: if you want to have friends, be a friend. So, in those days when life is tough, my prayer is that you will remember the words of this song ‘Way Maker.’ May God bless you.

OpiniOn:

Village idiots are green Steve Page I used to always make sure the Greens got a vote from me. I figured, as a non-political person that a vote their way would somehow help our planet. Somehow, they would slow the use and destruction of our earth. I think Winston Peters also got a few votes like this. Kinda cat in the pigeon’s loft philosophy. Keep them all honest approach. That is what I thought, anyway. The recent announcement by the Green Party, if elected, to introduce a “special” tax aimed at all the filthy rich is about the dumbest thing I have heard of, recently anyway. If, after a lifetime of work your wealth is around a million dollars, I’d say that’s average, not rich. And Ill bet you worked your ass off for it. Some do not, or won’t, that’s their choice But don’t penalise the hard workers.

So, let’s have a look at the proposed tax. If your value or wealth as they call it is over a million dollars, you will be slammed $10,000 each year to give to students, homeless, unemployed, etc, etc. Now that will account for anybody who has property, savings or any sort of wealth. So basically, most of Auckland’s homeowners and quite a few elsewhere, including here in Tasman and Richmond, are in their sights. It won’t take much to add up to a significant figure. However, if you have worked harder, been successful and you have $2million worth of wealth, you will owe the other half of New Zealand $20,000 per year. Let’s have a look at one of the recipient groups, the homeless. In a lot of cases it is a mental health issue. So where is the money for mental health in all this? It’s not getting to the needy now, let alone when this tax would be introduced. We must have the cash, af-

ter all, AJ Hackett bungy just got $10 millon to help them through tough times. It scares me to think that some lightweight novice from the Greens bought this proposed tax to the market and most media gave it credibility. Without considering the obvious ramifications and how widespread these criteria would be. Is the object to demotivate the successful people and hard workers? And if so, who’s going to do all of the work and revenue generation vital to strong fiscal health? Or, have the Greens gotten a cunning plan for that, too? I believe that it is time for all the reasonably good folk to stand up and start opposing idiot ideas like this and quite a few more that have appeared recently. Your silence is often taken as approval. The great saying is “the shame is only when good people remain silent”. I think the Greens have lost their way and are getting nuttier than chipmunk droppings.

Manor Property Services started 10 years ago with a small job and a lawnmower. Today it has 33 staff, 20 vehicles and numerous divisions.

Why not call in the MPS office and showroom on Tahunanui Drive to discuss your property maintenance needs or view the beautiful display kitchen, cabinetry and appliances? Manor Property Services Ltd has come a long way in the 10 years since the business first began. It has developed into Nelson’s premier property maintenance provider with 35 staff and 20 vehicles on the road offering an exceptionally diverse range of services. “We have built the business from the ground up,” says Mark Forbes who co-founded MPS with Andy Dumville. “It all started in 2010 when we began walking around the streets putting fliers in letter boxes, which resulted in us picking up quite a large job. After that, the phone started ringing, so we went out and bought a lawnmower and a trailer. From then until now we have had a lot of growth on the back of hard work; we’ve had failures and successes

– sometimes you learn more from the failures than the successes. It’s great to look back at what we have achieved.” After a couple of years Mark and Andy picked up a large contract providing property maintenance which they are still involved in today. “It has enabled us to bring on more staff and grow the business.” MPS has built a very strong client base across a range of commercial, residential, government and local body organisations. “We’re very grateful to have been really well supported by local companies and organisations, and our suppliers and customers over the past decade.” In 10 years, MPS has grown into a very large, professional, trade-based provider of services - it’s your local one-stop

shop. If you need your house painted, roof treated, gutters cleared, trees trimmed, house cleaned or the moss on your pathway water-blasted, with MPS you only need to make one call to get everything done, rather than call four different people. “Many businesses offer one service; painting, or gutters, or gardening, but they don’t do everything.” MPS can also provide professional commercial cleaning services, rubbish removal, building repairs and its team of experienced gardeners and builders can create anything from decks to pergolas or do garden tidy-ups. “We also do tidy-up ‘pre-sale’ work for properties going to market; houses washed, gardens tided, etc. We work closely with real estate agents; our

makeovers can result in a great outcome for the seller. Our different divisions are complementary, often requiring each other’s services.” Over the past decade, Mark and Andy have invested a lot back into the business by way of equipment, vehicles and resources and the business has become quite ‘divisionalised.’ In 2017, they started an asbestos division called ‘Asbestos Nelson Ltd,’ with certified Class A and B removalists who can test and safely remove asbestos from a home or business. “We get lots of calls from property owners who identify an asbestos issue. There are many compliance requirements around its removal that need to be handled professionally.” DSK (Designer Speciality Kitchens), creates bespoke, custom-made high-quality kitchens. “People like the flexibility to have exactly what they want that fits their budget – they can see what’s

There are many reasons why people choose MPS. “Our business isn’t a franchise; it is locally owned and operated and we enjoy being ‘handson’ and going out to work on a site. Our professional image also sets us apart. We have 35 dedicated, qualified staff who all turn up in uniform and wear their badge with a lot of pride. We’re lucky to have a great team who understand the true value of customer service. Karin and Juliet are the front faces of our admin team who will always greet you with a great smile when you visit our showroom.” Manor Property Services can provide domestic and commercial property maintenance, painting and decorating, scaffolding, carpentry and building projects, asbestos testing and removal, cleaning services and gardening and tree work. Whoa DOC, slow down! The New Zealand Deerstalkers Association Inc is supporting the Tahr Foundation’s efforts to stop the Department of Conservation’s move to cull Himalayan tahr. Under the new cull plan coming into effect today, DOC will triple the number of helicopter hours to kill tahr, and target all males in national parks. Previous plans have only targeted female and juvenile tahr. NZDA Chief Executive Gwyn Thurlow says DOC’s rushed process this year, and lack of its usual consultation, has left the foundation with no option but to take legal steps in order to be heard. “The NZDA and other hunting organisations are willing and happy to work with DOC to produce good tahr herd management plans,” Gwyn Thurlow says. “We deserve to be properly consulted,” he says. “We have a good track record on working constructively to produce good workable plans that have seen tahr populations reduced by more than twelve thousand animals in two years. “The present proposal ignores the hunting sector and the

Left: The house at Southdown with Isaac Gibbs seated in the chair. Pictured Right: The second house at Lone Oak Farm.

Gibbs Valley – The Men behind the Name Marg Farrelly James Gibbs was baptised in 1806 in Chawton, Hampshire, England. On the 19th October 1841 he sailed on board the Bolton from Gravesend, England. This was the start of a journey that would land him in Nelson, New Zealand, arriving 15 March 1842. Accompanying him on the voyage were his wife Ann and children William and Thomas.

His brother Isaac, born 1818, with wife Mary Anne, also departed on the Bolton. Their young son George died just 4 weeks before the ship sailed. James and Ann’s eldest son, William, died the day before the Bolton berthed at Petone (Wellington) for repairs. That same day, Ann gave birth to twins who were stillborn. James and Isaac first settled at Wakapuaka. They then moved to the Maitai Valley. It is believed the families squatted on land left vacant after wives and families of men killed during the Wairau Incident in 1843 had packed up and returned to England. Both families acquired stock and grew vegetables, making good money from selling to the many new settler families arriving in Nelson. The 1849 census had Isaac and his family living on a block of land in Brightwater.

Ann died in 1848 and in September 1849 James remarried, to Charlotte Verry. The wedding was one of the first to be celebrated at the St John’s Church in Wakefield. Both James and Isaac, along with other families in the area, were involved in the establishment of this church. James and Charlotte went on to raise a large family. The brothers moved to the Wakefield area in 1853, purchasing farms next door to each other in what was then known as Church Valley. Nowadays, when heading east from Edward Street, Church Valley branches to the right with Gibbs Valley Road leading off to the left, passing the site of both farms before continuing over the hill to join up with Bridge Valley. Both James and Isaac received additional land as compensation in recognition of the NZ Company’s failure

Nelson Matters

Nelson this week gets more tax and more talk on transport. What we need is a clear plan and action. This Wednesday petrol taxes go up 4 cents a litre and Road User Charges (RUC) increase 5%. This is the fourth increase in three years. The Government has added 20 cents a litre in extra tax since 2017 bringing the total fuel tax to 70 cents/litre. These tax hikes, particularly RUC, flow onto the cost of everything in Nelson with most goods like groceries trucked in. The Government should not be adding costs when households and businesses are hurting so much. A total of now $100 million per year is being taken in taxes and

RUC from Nelson and Tasman yet investment in our roads is at an all-time low. Labour canned National’s commitment in 2017 to fund and build the Southern Link. In 2019 they cancelled the $6 million quiet seal upgrade for SH6 in Atawhai and Stoke. $7 billion of nationwide roading projects were announced in January but nothing for Nelson or Tasman. We are paying more for less. This week also begins consultation on NZTA’s/NCC Nelson Future Access Project in yet another round of talks on how to connect Nelson’s city and port with the wider region. Our congestion problems will get worse

next month with the completion of the Princes Drive intersection and traffic lights on Waimea Road. The short term plan (to 2028) proposes nothing that will ease congestion and is focused on improving walking and cycling. It proposes road narrowing, higher city parking charges and lower speed limits. The long term plan looks at three options for the 2030s. Option 1 is TWO CLEARWAYS along the existing Waimea Road and Tahunanui Rocks Road route (cost $235m). It is awful for the hundreds of homes along both routes. Clearways did not work for SH1 north of Wellington causing many

to provide sufficient land as promised to new settlers.

Isaac Gibbs, brother of James Gibbs, arrived on the Bolton from Gravesend. Some of this land may have been along the west bank of the Motueka River near the

Golden Downs Golf Course. The road on that side of the river is called Gibbs Road. James named his farm Lone Oak Farm. He had planted an acorn that he had brought from England when he emigrated. The name was also a nod to Lonely Oak Farm in England where the two brothers had worked as tree fellers and agricultural labourers. Isaac named his property Southdown, with the hill behind the house known as Castle Hill. James was one of the pioneer settlers. His trustworthy character was valued by all who knew him. James died in 1892 and is buried in St John’s Church cemetery, Wakefield, along with Charlotte who died in 1899. Isaac died in 1903 after a long illness, he was one of Wakefield’s oldest settlers. His wife Mary Anne had died in 1884. They are also buried in the Wakefield cemetery.

544 Waimea Road, Nelson

accidents and fatalities and is why they are now building Transmission Gully. Option 2 involves FOUR LANING THE COASTAL ROUTE from Annesbrook through Tahunanui to the Port (cost $520m). This option ruins Nelson’s beautiful waterfront, has significant impacts on heritage and is bad for Tahunanui and its beach. Option 3 is an INLAND ROUTE (was called the Southern Link) along the Railway Reserve and St Vincent Street (cost $205m). It includes connections between St Vincent Street and the city, has smooth quiet seal and noise walls, maintains the cycleway and walk-

way and proposes designing a new urban village for Victory. This option costs the least, best enables Rocks Road to become a coastal boulevard for cycling and walking, is the shortest route, poses the least disruption to homes and schools and is the most resilient to climate change. This report is helpful in highlighting that Nelson’s only practical long term transport plan is progressing this inland route. The tragedy for Nelson is deferring it until 2035. Nelson City will continue to lose business, retailing and jobs to Richmond until it is built. We need to get on with it. Advt.

Waimea takes a beating on the court Aimee Berkett Waimea College Senior A boys took on their Nelson equivalent in Friday night’s basketball. The Nelson boys came out fighting, wanting to prove their place at the Waimea College home game. They did just that. Waimea struggled to defend against Nelson’s strong offence, ending the first half with Nelson up 51-23. Waimea continued to fight hard but couldn’t dig deep enough to bring it back, resulting in Nelson winning 98-62. Waimea coach Phill Jones said

that Waimea let the Nelson team do what they wanted for parts of the game. “When you lose by almost 40 points it’s hard to be impressed by a lot, but I thought there were patches where we definitely tried very hard”. Phill was pleased with how James Ranson performed throughout the game. “It can be hard to pinpoint what went well and what went wrong in the game” There are no South Island Championships for basketball this year, being cancelled due to the Covid-19 outbreak. Waimea College Boys are aim-

ing to make it to the New Zealand Nationals tournament in October, but they must compete against all the teams in the Tasman region to gain a spot in the tournament. Phill says that this game will not impact the rest of the season and they will “keep building to the one game that counts”. Since coming back from the 6-week break, Phill says, “A few boys come back a bit out of shape, but I definitely think they are starting to get there”. Phil says the plan moving forward is “Practice, Practice, Practice”

The golden Saturday afternoon weather came to an abrupt end on 27th June as Nelson/Tasman walkers and runners descended on Motueka for the first of their four Sprig and Fern 10km races, held throughout the region as part of the Winter Running Programme. However, the damp weather did not deter the spirits of the 65 competitors as they took off from Decks Reserve on Wallace Street, and headed out on the very scenic course along the seafront walkway and around the inlet, before heading back through Thorpe Bush to the finish line. While there was a very competitive spirit among the top runners and walkers and some fast times recorded, it was great to see so many participants challenging themselves to complete the 10km course and reach their personal goals:

was the 1st walker overall in 65.50mins, with Nicky Alexander the 1st woman walker in 80.20mins. At the conclusion of the race, participants and supporters enjoyed a social gathering at the local Sprig and Fern, the sponsors of this event. Here the results of the race were announced and spot prizes awarded to the lucky recipients.

Wanderers win as rugby returns Jacob Page It was a case of back to the future with some Wanderers stalwart players returning for their 28-15 Nelson Bays championship victory over Stoke on Saturday. It was the team’s first game in 15 weeks following the coronavirus pandemic. Jesse Pitman-Joass, Sione Havili and Alex Ainley returned to the Blue and Gold after various breaks away. The match was an even contest with the much larger Stoke forward pack slowly exerting their dominance at scrum time. Wanderers did enjoy more territorial advantage but were unable to convert three excellent opportunities into points. Stoke took both chances when in the Wanderers 22m to lead 15-8 after 30 minutes. Wanderers twice had lineout chances on Stoke’s five-metre line but on both occasions tenacious Stoke defence resulted in maul turnovers. However, right on halftime at the third attempt, Dan Mclauchlan was driven over by his pack and the score was closed to 15-13 at the break. The Stoke crowd anticipated their team rolling over Wanderers in the second half by exploiting the scrum and weight advantage, especially following Ainley’s departure. A combination of Wanderers resilience and a determined, effective defence, assisted by some Stoke errors and poor decision-making, resulted in Stoke being unable to increase their score for the final 50 minutes. During the second half, Wanderers stole the ball at crucial times. Havili continued to make huge inroads, carrying the ball towards Stoke territory. It took almost 20 minutes before Tayne Lockwood scored a superb try following an excellent kick and chase where three

Wanderers players trapped the Stoke fullback and regained possession before sending Lockwood free and earn a 18-15 advantage on the scoreboard. Wanderers’ smarter attitude and commitment to the team plan discussed at the break, was rewarded with an excellent team try to Fletcher Matthews when the Blue and Gold’s had been reduced to 14 men following a yellow card to Tone Vaka. This was a huge psychological blow struck and took Wanderers into the lead 23-15. Wanderers’ ability to break out from deep was again a key to a final try right on fulltime to centre Elnino Peniamina. Gabba de Kock led his pack manfully, ably supported by every player who did their job

well, tackling low, running hard and working as a team together. Havili was immense, but it was a day where teamwork and club spirit were rewarded. The team Player of the Day awards were awarded to Cameron King (3) for a fine all round match at halfback, Chris Haluafia (2) and Jayden Woolley (1), who varied play intelligently at first five. Rugby will return to Centennial Park on Saturday with an under-18 game at 12 noon, with Taylors Wanderers hosting Motueka High School in a friendly match, followed by our 3 Bee Womens team welcoming Moutere at 1.15pm and culminating with the division one team playing their first home game for the year against Kahurangi at 3pm.

Store Manager • Unique and thriving country store • Loyal customer following • F/T Sunday to Thursday with some flexibility Eyebright Country Store has aptly been called a country department store because of the wide product range - a wool store, dried flowers, silk flowers, gifts and décor, clothing, toiletries, condiments and, for three months, the Christmas store for the whole Nelson Tasman region. The store is set in beautiful gardens with a guinea pig village and coffee cart making the experience of visiting special and loved by many. It is open 7 days a week. We are seeking a Store Manager who will report to the GM and take responsibility for the smooth running of the store. Key requirements are sales and customer service, leading a small committed team (which swells before Xmas), purchasing and dealing with suppliers, store design and choreographing creating a special store experience to delight and exceed the expectations of their customers. Our ideal candidate will have been in customer service roles in the past and have a strong ethos of excellent customer service, have had team leadership experience and preferably solid experience in purchasing and store display. This is a wonderful opportunity to bring your creative skills, talents and flair to build on and enhance this successful operation and have heaps of fun along the way. If this is of interest and you’d like to know more or request a JD, please contact Judy on 027 439 4325. Apply by emailing your CV and cover letter to judy@fanselowconsulting.co.nz by 15 July 2020.
