Family lose everything A family of four lost all of their possessions during last Sunday’s flood and do not have insurance to claim on any of it. Lee Cole was holding back tears when he described the moment he and his partner Hayley Lincoln had to climb out of the window with daughters Ella, 7, and Abbie, 3, just to get to safety, before returning to save what he could within the space of half an hour. “It was just heart breaking.

ing out” in the living room when the flood started on Sunday evening. He first noticed a drain outside “bubbling up”. “It just started rising up and both our neighbours were a bit worried. Once it started coming down the driveway we knew we were screwed. I thought it was going to drain off but it just sat there. Once it was in the backyard there was no where for it to go except for into the house and
that’s when we started freaking.” Lee, who says the whole family is now living in his mother’s two bedroom house, grabbed towels and blankets and began stacking them near the doors, hoping to barricade the home. “I thought I was holding it off, until I heard the girls scream. I ran into the lounge and they were standing SEE PAGE 2

Family lose everything in flood FROM PAGE 1 there with this water coming towards them. At that stage I knew I had lost the battle. I was just thinking ‘let’s get the kids out of here.’” Wading through waist deep water, Lee says he saw beds and toys floating through the house. “Half an hour into it I knew there wasn’t going to be much to save. You could hear the pipes bursting down the street and you could smell the sewage.” Lee says it will be at least six months before his family can move back into the Arbor-Lea Ave rental – not that his daughters want to go near it. “They don’t want to come back. It took a lot for them to come back down today because of what happened you know. It’s still quite fresh in their minds.”
He couldn’t put a price on how much he had lost. “We’ve lost photos; things that are priceless to us. We just bought a brand new super king bed and to see that floating up was just crazy.” When questioned about not having contents insurance, Lee says he had always had it, just not on this house. One of his parents had even warned him about not having it. “My words were it’s not like we’re going to have a tsunami or get flooded.” He was thankful for the support he had already received from the community and says he was inundated with clothes for his two girls just days after the flood. But one thing he was still seeking help with some household items. The big changeover from analogue to digital television happened with just the flick of a switch and a group of local men who were crucial to its first appearances in Nelson got to play a final part in the historical event. The tower atop the Grampians has been turned off following Sunday’s digital changeover and for former transmission superintendent for the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation Laurie Merrick and his team of technicians it was a chance to view the tower up close one more time and reminisce about the hard work they put in to install the revolutionary system back in 1971. Nelson has Laurie and his team to thank for the major advance in technology that saw the very first good quality picture picked up and shown on TV and he says he is proud that they played such a big role in getting it to where it is today. At the same time it’s great that the quality has improved.” Although he is sad to see it go Laurie says he is pleased to see technology advance. “Things have changed, but it is an improvement. It’s just electronic progress really.”

Students forced to learn in office
The Nelson Technical Institute has lost training vehicles, automotive equipment, computers and access to some workshops and now students are being taught in offices as last Sunday’s flood continues to take its toll. Owner and director Carol Curtis says she has had five different assessors through the Wakatu Industrial Estate property since Sunday but remains in the dark as to when NTI will be fully functional again. “We’re probably looking in excess of $200,000$300,000 at least,” she says. “We’ve got a
Phillip Rollo Reporter
editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz few desks and chairs left but you can’t even get an answer as to when we will be back running properly. It’s such a long process and I’m just over it.” NTI does not have holidays but some students were currently taking “forced days off ” because of the damage done to some of the workshops. “We’re trying to do the
best we can.” Carol says around 70 students studying pre-entry into the electrical industry, commercial road transport, automotive and NCEA have been affected by the incident. “This has affected them big time. What we’ve done is turn our offices into classrooms because that didn’t get hit, which is lucky because that’s where our server is.” With minimal students on deck, Carol was hoping to find a few weeks of work experience for the others. “We don’t know where we’re going and that’s the hard thing. We
have comprehensive insurance but that doesn’t help the students. There is nowhere we can transfer our classes because we need our resources.” Carol says she was aware of the damage on Sunday night when fire fighters told her the flood waters were one meter deep around the property. She says her home was flooded as well and that she was “over it” from a personal point of view. “We’ve worked seven days since the flood and then I go home to it as well, it’s just doing my head in.”

Guy is NZ’s top brewer
Hard work has paid off for one Richmond barista who has just been named as New Zealand’s champion coffee brewer. At the first ever AeroPress New Zealand Brewers Cup championship held in Auckland, Cafe on Oxford owner Guy McCracken impressed a panel of judges during a blind tasting to take home first place against six other competitors. Guy will take his winning routine of brewing Don Pepe Estate Geisha coffee produced in Panama in a plunger to the world championship to be held in Melbourne in May. He says the international competition will be a bit of an unknown, but he was hoping to tap into the knowledge of Hayden Thompson at Pomeroy’s as he judged at the world final last year. “I know where my score would place me on a national standard but there’s still a bit of work to do,” says Guy. “With Hayden, he judged the best in the world so he knows what standard we’re looking at. Obviously over there he can’t judge me but in the run into it he’s a pretty good resource to have.”

Future of radio mast up in the air The future of the radio mast at Saxton Field now depends on whether the Nelson City Council can convince Radio New Zealand that an alternative mast is sufficient for its needs and it can therefore be moved. Last week Radio NZ transmission manager Gary Fowles told Waimea Weekly that all investigations into where the mast could go have been exhausted. He says the possibility of using the Radio Rhema mast was looked at and discounted years ago because it didn’t have the reach of their current site. NCC dropped funding to help move the

Resident turns 100 There was a 100th birthday celebration at Wensley House rest home last week with resident Kathleen Hazard reaching the birthday milestone. Kathleen, who was born in London on April 16 1913, has lived in the rest home for the past ten years and has one daughter Betty. Betty Lark says it was a special day for her mother. “We never thought she’d make it,” she says. “I went up to Wensley House to see her recieve her birthday cake and I knew she was enjoying it because she was talking and smiling, which she usually doesn’t do.” Betty thought her mother was particularly happy with the birthday card from Queen Elizabeth. “She pointed at it and this is when she started talking. She pointed at it and said ‘who’s that?’ When I told her it was the Queen and that she had sent the birthday card she started going ‘ooooh’.” Kathleen married John Henry (Harry) Hazard in 1933 and the couple moved to New Zealand in 1952 with Betty, who was born in 1935. Kathleen and Harry lived in Johnsonville before relocating to Christchurch when Betty got engaged to a man down there. In Christchurch, Kathleen and Harry purchased a Four Square grocery store in Addington which was only open during the week, giving them time to play bowls and be in the garden on the weekends. Kathleen and Harry enjoyed retirement, according to Betty, before he passed away in 1992.

Council won’t waive rubbish dumping fees Tasman District Council will not be waiving dump fees for those getting rid of material damaged in last Sunday’s flood because of the high cost, despite Nelson City Council announcing it would. Last week Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio said the offer only applied to Nelson residents dumping at the Nelson City Council transfer station. “The number of properties affected was not large, but the damage was severe. By waiving the fees, or refunding those who have already dumped their damaged material, council can provide some level of support.” But TDC spokesperson Chris Choat says Tasman residents that have dumped damaged material should keep the receipt and use it as part of their insurance claim instead. “We understand there are some issues that could affect individuals and we’re more than happy to discuss those,” he says.

PD workers help out in the community Sinead Ogilvie
Local periodic detention community workers are making a difference under a new programme that sees them out doing real community work and making a real difference, says Tasman District councillor and Probation Services community work supervisor Kit Maling. Bird St residents got a significant helping hand when ten community workers showed up at their door on Saturday to offer their hands to help clear flood damaged furniture, personal belongings and appliances from some of the worst damaged homes. As the workers filled a skip with couches, beds, furniture, appliances and personal belongings from Maggie Cooper’s home she says she was relieved and thankful for their help after being left with virtually nothing following last Sunday’s flood that through her home. “Mostly everybody lost everything on this street, the water in my home came above my knees. I think it’s great that these guys can help us out in a time of need.” Kit says community workers are
responding well to the programme which has seen Probation Services liaise with Civil Defence Welfare since the 2011 floods. “I’ve got ten young men doing community work and working down here with people in need, it’s a way of them giving back to the community, which they are supposed to do as part of their sentence.” He says the community workers have responded well to seeing the results of helping people who desperately needed it. “It’s a positive thing for them to help people. They respond really well to it because they can see the benefit and result of helping someone. They have reacted very positively because they see a job where they are actually doing something for the community.” Kit says the group are also working on tidying up the Waimea Inlet enhancing the work that volunteers are already working on. “We are working on clearing the Waimea Inlet of rubbish, clearing the fence lines and trying to return it to its natural state. There’s bits of concrete, rubbish, metal. It’s not a pretty place, it’s ugly and you need a lot of volunteers to help improve it.”

ArthRem is a new dietary supplement that may assist those who need joint health support. The active constituent is a plant compound called Artemisinin, which is the basis of the world’s anti-malarial medications. Whilst developing a new herbal extract for malaria, its benefits for joint health were discovered due to its positive impact on the immune system and suppression of inflammatory factors. A number of studies since have indicated the benefits for joint health. It is important to note that it is not an immediate pain relief option and is likely to take up to three months to build up therapeutic levels in the body. Having said this, it is a much better option for longer term condition management.

8 Foot Sativa booked in for Richmond gig
with Sinead Ogilvie
Wednesday April 24 Tickets are selling fast to the Stacey Winter Fashion Show and Charity Auction that is being organised to support local designer and Richmond business woman Cheryl Stacey. With only 100 tickets remaining to the event which is being held at the Hope Community Centre on May 10, organiser Vanessa Downing says people should get in quick to book their tickets to the night of fun and fashion. All proceeds will go equally towards funding Cheryl’s treatment and the Nelson branch of the Cancer Society. Tickets $45 from Stacey Boutique in the Richmond Mall or phone 02102836590. Wednesday April 24 BP in Richmond have managed to raise more than $100 after setting up a donation box for members of the public to go towards those affected by last Sunday’s flood. Site manager Karen Marfell says they have had a great response to the donation box with the public donating generously to help those in need. Wednesday April 10 After being inundated with goods donated by the public, the annual Save the Children fundraising fair that was held two weeks ago at the Stoke Memorial Hall has broken a record in the amount of money raised through the event. The sale of goods alongside a raffle resulted in more than $9000 in funds to go towards the local charity. Wednesday February 6 After an article was published in the Waimea Weekly on the installation of horse user access gates to forest in the Wakefield area Action Forest Management, the business in charge of security of the areas in question has seen an increased amount of people applying for horse access permits. A few months into the first year of evaluation on the gates AFM have received good feedback and ask that any current users of the horse gates in the Wakefield and Aniseed/ Lee Valley area who are interested in providing feedback to get in contact with Rory Cobb, technical forester for Action Forest Management.

Rabbit Island is expected to open to vehicles later this week as the council continues to review flooded water levels. Access to the popular picnic and recreation area has been restricted to pedestrians and cyclists since last Sunday’s flooding with high water tables continuing to prevent any drainage. Tasman District Council spokesperson Steve Richards says the island was being reviewed daily and it was likely to be back to normal sooner rather than later. “Hopefully it will open in the next couple of days. The water levels are dropping quite well,” he says. “Based on reports coming in from people over the weekend there is still a lot of water standing over the roads. Once it’s cleared from the roads we will open it.” Steve says the decision to close Rabbit Island off to vehicles was made because it is knee deep, meaning there was a risk to cars. “They could get stuck in the flood water and that’s the main concern. The water is not contaminated and it’s safe to walk and bike through. We’re just worried people will get their cars stuck.” After flooding in December 2011, Rabbit Island resembled a lake for about four weeks, but Steve says it is draining faster this time. Meanwhile, the mountain biking tracks in the Richmond hills were now open after volun- Rabbit Island has been closed off to vehicles due to lingering surface flooding. Flooding: Like many other businesses, the Richmond Hospice shop was terribly damaged by the recent flooding. I need your help to say thank you. On Sunday evening I was ankle deep in water and very upset as a volunteer and I tried to clear the deluge of water that had swamped the shop. Firstly a young lady on her bike stopped to offer assistance, then a couple pulled up in a car, went home and got brooms and
mention the wonderful people who worked so very hard in the first place to bring us this wonderful facility... Belinda Taggart.
Local, just like you
Hi there, just to say how good it is to read the last two articles you have written on the Waimea Village. Like a lot of people here I am a tad reluctant to speak out too loudly, not because I am scared of Michael myself but because I think he will most likely go after my husband who has poor health and some dementia. It is great for us to see that you are publishing the plights of people like Ethel and Kevin just to mention two... Keep up the good work! (Via email).
returned to help, then a couple with their dog stopped and so the offers of help continued. I would like to personally thank these people whose names I don’t know, for their kindness in a real time of need. They worked until nearly midnight with me. The community of Richmond has its own barmy army. From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much. Also to the team at Raeward Fresh, Queen St Fruit and Veg and New World Stoke for giving us an endless supply boxes to help clear our shop and salvage what we could. Should questions be asked after the 3 year old Saxton Stadium after it was damaged in floods? It was a freak of nature. We’ve had heavy rains before and it’s coped well. Sharon Tarapipipi. You can’t compare a roof the size of the stadium with an average household - that’s like comparing apples and oranges. The design or standard of build would need some investigation as obviously water shouldn’t have got into a ceiling however the amount of rain was highly unusual and I believe that the building would have been designed and built to comply with the necessary council requirements. To an extent “it’s just one of those things” but it is a big blow to the sporting communities, not to
Waimea Village editorial: One can only wonder at how Michael and Carolyn Wright and ex real estate tycoon, John Davies, can sleep at night knowing that their actions have caused so many heartaches for so many people in Waimea Village. Money evidently talks for these people not morality. (Please do not print my name).
I want to drop you a quick note to say a big thank you for continuing to fight on behalf of the villagers through your recent articles on the Wrights. I too have a very elderly mum who lives at the village and now lives in fear about how this will all end. I have previously contacted you about is matter. Unfortunately, many of the villagers feel helpless and it’s through much of your efforts they have a voice. The community
must get behind the villagers and tell the Wrights they are wrong. I am pleased you have also outed our their lawyer. Keep fighting the good fight and we are right behind you. P.S. please keep my note confidential as mum is very concerned she will be bullied. All of the senders of these emails have been verified and we’ve allowed them to be printed without the names because their genuine fear of the repercussions from the Wrights. Ed. Your editorial on the Waimea Village debacle was unprofessional. To allow a staff member involved in a dispute to write a one sided piece without a reply from the accused is frankly just rubbish. I don’t know the facts well enough to take sides but the Wrights deserve a right of reply in same issue. Tim Monck-Mason. Tim you said it. You don’t know the facts. We have been reporting on this for over two years now and are sounding the alarm bells. Big time. We are now no longer prepared to take a passive role when the village residents are under this type of duress. It is a community newspaper’s job to represent the community. I can assure you that had you been one of those residents you would be singing a completely different tune. - Steve Page, Waimea Weekly publisher. Ladies hope race will raise cash A group of local women are braving the Nelson Rollo’s Adventure race this Saturday in a bid to support women who have battled cancer. The group hopes to raise awareness and fundraise for the Pink Pilates Trust, a local programme that offers rehabilitation for women who have undergone cancer-related surgery and say they want to let women know that there is life during and after undergoing cancer treatment. For Petra Nugent and Janine Pomeroy breast cancer is personal and they say their fundraising goal comes down to their own firsthand experiences. While Petra has just begun the ar-
duous journey of surgery and awaits chemotherapy and radiation treatment, she will compete alongside Janine, who is a breast cancer survivor, and Vicky Shelling in the 8 hour race that will see them mountain bike, hike and run. Petra says she was determined to stay active when she was diagnosed with breast cancer and wants other women to realise that they can too. So far the women have managed to fundraise more than $1900, much more than the $500 Janine says she initially set as a goal. To donate head to www.everydayhero.co.nz/rollos_ challenge_pink_pilates.

Event to fundraise for community centre
Neudorf Vineyards will open the gardens for another charity event later in the year, with proceeds going towards the Moutere Hills Community Centre and the Child Cancer Foundation. The Moutere Hills Community Centre suffered two electrical fires recently and organiser Judy Finn says money is sorely needed to bring the centre into operation again. She described the event, which will be held on November 24, as a celebration of everything special about living in the country. The event last raised $18,000. For more information about the event or stalls contact Judy@neudorf.co.nz or phone 543 2643.

The Top of the South VMX club are holding their annual Ray Anderson Memorial Trophy and Club Champs on May 5 at Tadmor. Ray Anderson was member of the Nelson motorcycle club from 1947 to when he passed away in 2003 and spent 52 years as secretary or treasurer, as well as being a member of the MNZ executive in the early 1960s. He received the service award medal
from MNZ in 1996 and also the Nelson community service award in 2002 for long-standing and valuable contribution to the sport of motorcycling. Ray raced all over the country and was involved in most motorcycle businesses in Nelson until he retired at age 65. The Ray Anderson Memorial Classic Trophy recognises this contribution and is raced for by a different class each year drawn on the day which gives all senior
Just a thought... Growing up I enjoyed a plethora of movies about aliens such as Predator, E.T, Star Trek, Men In Black and Star Wars. It seems that pop-culture is obsessed with the idea that there is life on other planets. There’s constant media coverage of many close encounters of the third kind. One of the most famous is the Roswell incident. In 1947, some people believe a UFO crashed on a ranch in New Mexico. Many think that autopsies were performed on the alien corpses and that the whole event was covered up by the US government. Then there are the people who claim they’ve been abducted by extra-terrestrials. Some say they were violated by the aliens; others say they were subjected to various medical and psychological experiments. A whole new branch of science called Exobiology has now been formed. It delves into the possibility of life on other planets or in space. Many prominent scientists consider extra-terrestrial life to be plausible, but no direct evidence has yet been found. Despite this lack of evidence, a growing number of people believe life on earth was planted here by life-forms from outer space. Do we exist because of aliens?
Being honest with you, I have seen some pretty strange looking people around, but that doesn’t mean we are the result of an ancient Martian visitation to our planet. The Bible gives us a much simpler explanation regarding the origin of life on planet Earth: “Everything was created through God; nothing — not one thing — came into being without him.” Although we need not keep watch for brother aliens coming back, there is still good reason to gaze at the stars tonight. The Bible says: “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge.” Right now the SETI Institute is spending millions of dollars monitoring the skies for some kind of communication from outer space. Yet every night, the stars, the moon and the planets are trying to communicate with the human race. The heavens are declaring the glory of God. Through the majesty of the moon, the stars and the planets, God is trying to speak to you. He’s trying to beam a message into your world. He wants to start a dialogue with you. Can you hear him? If you can, will you respond? - Matthew Grant, Grace Church.

Derby goes down to the wire It only took three games but Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers has already earned itself some silverware. With just one more weekend left in the Car Company division one’s first round, Wanderers are guaranteed to sit on the top spot, claiming the Moller Cup after a come-from-behind 21-18 win against Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys at the Brightwater Domain. Waimea Old Boys could have spent this weekend resting up with the trophy, but it will instead spend the bye weekend looking back at how it let an 18-7 second half lead slip. With four players sent to the sin bin at varying stages throughout the match, teams had looked to make the most of the numerical advantage. And it seems as if Wanderers did the better job in that department with nine and ten combination Jackson Harvey and Jesse Pitman crossing for late tries. Both tries were scored while Waimea’s Dan Hytongue was on the sideline.
Phillip Rollo Reporter
editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz The match could have ended in a draw if Billy Guyton had brought his kicking boots to Brightwater. The Waimea midfielder missed six attempts during the game, one from a handy position with just three minutes left on a clock. Kaide Whiting and Dan Hytongue scored Waimea’s two tries while Kerehama Barrett, playing in his first season for Wanderers, scored his side’s other five pointer. In the round’s other match, new boys Kahurangi Hawks took care of Galbraith Group Nelson 24-3 to claim its first win of the season. The results now mean Wanderers and Waimea lead the competition with 14 points each, separated by points differential.
