Teen’s first car wrecked on roadside Phillip Rollo

A hit and run in the early hours of Sunday morning has left a Richmond teenager fearing his car could be written off – just a month after he bought it. Fred Gordon, a 17 year old Waimea College student, came back to get his car after spending the night at a friend’s house on Hill St, only to find a huge dent in the back,

making it near impossible to drive. Having paid for it himself, Fred is now nervously waiting to find out if the car will be too expensive to fix, because the driver of the vehicle that smashed into the back of it drove off in the early hours when it is believed the accident occurred. “When I first saw it I didn’t know if it had been hit. I was just in shock,” says Fred, who only has third party insurance. “I saved up to get it.

I paid for it myself.” A neighbour of the friend told Fred they thought it was a shotgun going off. “They looked out the window but didn’t think anything of it.” Another neighbour heard a crash at approximately 4am, he says. Fred is hoping the person that crashed into his car will step forward, although his father Simon says the fact they drove off indicates they might have been drunk. “You

would have had to be drinking to have not seen it. Or did they fall asleep? You don’t know really.” Just to straighten the chassis could cost Fred $800, which would be on top of the cost for new paint, a new bumper and a new boot lid. “The car is only worth $2500-$3000 so they said if it’s going to SEE PAGE 4
