Teresa Hattan As long as there are buffalo wings at the Richmond Festival the local Americans will be happy. Richmond members of the USA Club say they hope to be involved in the events happening here in September, which will tie in with the Rugby World Cup games being played in Nelson. Richmond has unofficially taken the USA team on board and will be hosting three events that relate to the country. Members Tom Kroos, Chris Cornelisen and Adrienne Ford think it’s great that Richmond will host events that originate from the USA. The three events are due to be held in Richmond on September 25-27 and will include a sevens tournament, a block party and a tailgate party over three consecutive days. The festival falls at a great time for Americans, who would already be in competitive sport mode. “Richmond is going to be party central for the USA team, not that any of us really follow United States rugby,” says Adrienne. Locals will be able to enjoy and celebrate all things America. “There are a number of Americans here other than us, there is quite a strong American contingent here,” says Chris. Adrienne believes the way Americans do things can easily be translated to the Kiwi way of life. “We just open our car boot and

Tasman residents need to dig into their pockets once more for those that have served our country. Tomorrow is Poppy Day, a day where local RSA’s canvas their district for funds. This year will see the Richmond Waimea RSA organise a bucket run around the commercial areas and along the back streets. There will also be tables in the Richmond Mall and along Queen St. All the money collected goes to the wel-
fare of the returned service people, and Richmond Waimea RSA president Terry Richardson says it can only be used for this purpose. Poppy Day is known to be popular in the area, with just over $13,000 raised last year. “We then spent it all this year on welfare so it’s quite important to raise some more,” says Terry. The local RSA hope Tasman residents will once again get behind those who have
fought for their country. “We’ve been very fortunate the public have been responding so well [in the past],” says Terry. The Ladies RSA also help on the tables, which is a great as Terry says the members aren’t getting any younger. “It’s getting harder for us to do all this now that our members are getting older, we haven’t got a young RSA.” Saturday will see poppies being sold in the Mall only.

Ex-pats gear up for Richmond festival FROM PAGE 1 throw in some beer, which sounds pretty Kiwi to me.” “There are definitely a lot of similarities, we’re not all that different,” adds Chris. Tom believes there isn’t a whole lot that would surprise New Zealanders about Americans, especially as a lot of people are pretty well travelled these days. “I think they would get into it, a tailgate where you’ve got BBQs and beer.” However, there are a few differences between the two cultures and the Richmond Festival will provide the opportunity for each country to see how the other lives. “One thing I don’t see the Kiwis do here is wear the big hats that we wear when watching sport, they don’t really do that here,”
says Adrienne. The decorating of cars happens more in the States, which doesn’t happen that often here in New Zealand. “I’m looking forward to seeing what they [the organisers] have in mind for us to help with,” says Adrienne. The group hope the USA team would be able to make it to some of the festivities and they are even thinking about a welcoming party at the airport. “There’s no reason why we can’t go out to the airport when they come in and wave our flags,” says Adrienne. The group believe having these three themed events will be a good way to show the rest of the community a slice of American life. “The probably won’t be expecting a lot of support from Nelson but I think they’ll be surprised,” says Chris.

The mud was flying at last month’s Grace Church bloke’s camp. Boys from Grace Church were involved in a wide variety of fun things over the time they were at camp, but the main focus was about teaching them the right way to become men. “It is sad to see how many young men really have no idea what it means to behave like a man. We were getting older men to share their life stories and how they worked through some of their struggles to help give them some direction and give them some food for thought,” says youth pastor Brett Hitchens. The church is also taking around 60 young people to an Easter Camp this week- BLOKES CAMP: Nick Brake and Jim Ennion in the mud at the recent end in Christchurch. Grace Church bloke’s camp. Trail loop creates discussion at public meeting The resource consent for the Waimea Estuary section of the planned Tasman Loop Cycle Trail is due to be lodged early next month but the project has recently created some discussion. A public meeting on the route attracted about 60
people to Tasman District Council’s Richmond offices last week, with Nelson Marlborough Fish and Game staff raising concerns about the trail’s proposed route near rare-bird habitat and game-hunting areas.

Brightwater development making progress There have been rumours flying around Brightwater about what is happening with the new construction on Ellis St. Developers Dale and Christine Eewers can confirm that no, it’s definitely not a KFC. In fact, a total of 10 commercial units are being built. Already a café and The Loggers Shop will take a number of those but three are still available
for lease. The 10 two bedroom flats upstairs will also be available. “We’ve got interest in them but we don’t have any residents signed up yet,” says Dale. The Loggers Shop, owned by Dale and Christine, will be looking at expanding once it moves into the new space. The couple say any interested parties can get in touch with them at christine@logger.co.nz.

Letters to the Editor One of the best things about community newspapers, especially yours was your lack of sensationalism. Fact telling has become a lost art in the media and opinions and dramatics seem to have taken over. This was one of the biggest reasons Waimea Weekly won my readership. I have to say that unique flavour has soured with this whole tree vs. church thing. As a parent at Richmond School, I passed that tree every day for drop off and pick up, I don't miss it, there are enough huge trees around that church and in 'Old Richmond' to keep my love for greenery happy. This whole 'church is lying' thing is growing old. The amount of permission or consent we need from the powers that be in this region is ridiculous as it is without the general public being able to tell us what tree we cut down on our own properties. It's over-kill. This issue may have warranted one story, but weeks of it? First it was 'grieving flowers and poems on a tree stump' verse 'church', this has now morphed into 'Waimea Weekly' verse 'church'. It was a tree, you can still grow them, you can't glue it back up. A community centre that helps our community sounds like a good idea to me. How about we support this church to build our community into
a better place where people are loved and supported. Honestly that seems like common sense. Ingrid, (Not a member of the Holy Trinity but a member of the community) Okay, but how many community centres do we need? It’s not so much about the tree as it is the church playing with the truth. It is unfortunate, but we think the church needs to be above all others when it comes to transparency. There were only two issues with an article and the church needed an opportunity to respond, making the third. It wasn’t “any tree” but an old landmark. We also represent the parts of our community who felt very strongly about the downing and the method. It’s our job as your community newspaper to present these articles, which is what we have done and nothing in that article was factually incorrect. From there you make up your own mind and for you to disagree or dislike something is your ultimate choice, but we would fight for your right as well. Thank you very much for taking the time to write, you bring up some good points. And to Philip Did-Dell, our highly educated staff had trouble understanding your point. Ed.

Richmond returned serviceman Robin Godbaz always looks forward to Anzac Day. The 64 year-old was a lance corporal in the Vietnam War after joining the army in 1968. Robin went through all the usual training and became a rifleman. His first posting was to Malaysia with the 28th brigade, which was where British, Australia and New Zealand forces were all in one military camp. While in Vietnam Robin had a rather unusual job compared to the rest of his comrades. “I was posted to the New Zealand component, which was the administrative headquarters of the New Zealand forces.” After three months Robin was posted to a rifle company, victor five, where he was the rifleman/ clerk. Robin says he had a more varied experience in Vietnam than the basic rifleman. “They probably saw a lot more action than I ever did.” Overall, Robin says his experiences in Vietnam were good. “The best thing that came out of the whole experience for me was the friendships, they’re life WAR VETERAN: Richmond’s Robin Godbaz is looking forward long really.” to Anzac Day this year. Offbeat prepare for nationals with Club Waimea concert
BARBERSHOP: Offbeat quartet ladies Sarah Churchman, Gabrielle Ponsford, Kathy Jamieson and Ann Nicholson are looking forward to the National Women’s Barbershop competition at the end of April.
Club Waimea will send Offbeat away to nationals in style next week. A dress rehearsal at the club next Tuesday will offer club goers the chance to see the ladies in action ahead of their annual competition. There are hundreds of women of all ages having the time of their lives learning the musical art form of barbershop harmony and right now they are in competition mode, preparing to meet and compete at the Regional Convention to be held in the Wellington Town Hall at the end of this month. Nelson Bays Harmony Chorus will be competing again this year. After winning the Most Improved award for two years in a row they are going for the hat-trick. It is a sought after award, given to the chorus who has raised their points the most since they last competed. The women's barbershop competitions are hosted by Sweet Adelines International and have a judging system that is consistent across the world from year to year. Chorus and quartet performances are scored in four categories: Sound, Music, Showmanship, and Expression. The Champion chorus and Quartet are eligible to compete at the
International Convention, held in the United States in October the following year. This year Nelson also has a competing quartet. Offbeat quartet was formed last year and Sarah Churchman (lead), Gabrielle Ponsford (bass), Ann Nicholson (baritone) and Kathy Jamieson (tenor) have spent many hours singing together, working out choreographed moves and having vocal coaching sessions. They will be among 18 quartets and nine choruses to take the stage over the two day contest. Nelson Bays Harmony chorus and Offbeat quartet can be seen at a dress rehearsal performance in the hall at Club Waimea, Tuesday April 26 from 7.30pm. Entry is by gold coin donation. This short concert is an opportunity for the public, and friends and family of the singers, to see a full dress rehearsal of the competiton songs and to wish them well as they represent Nelson in the National Women’s Barbershop Competition, 2011. For more info on Nelson Bays Harmony see www.nelsonharmony.org.nz, or phone Jenny Edwards on 0275 444 121, or 543 9222 (w). For more info on Offbeat quartet phone Gabrielle Ponsford on 0274 488 774.

Brightwater Community Newsletter
Welcome to our April Newsletter, With school holidays underway and Easter just around the corner, we hope you all have a safe and happy holiday enjoying time with your families. At our meeting this month members from Tasman District Council presented the Draft Annual Plan and answered questions from our community. At a cycleway meeting plans were presented showing the route of the cycleway. Suggestions and concerns were passed on, particularly about the possibility of moving the entrance away from the memorial gates to the pathway alongside the plunket rooms, and also
about using Bryant Lane with its limited space for cyclists. A traffic count is to be undertaken and TDC will contact us as final decisions are made. Keep an eye on the big blank wall facing the Kindergarten and the Domain grounds – preparations will soon be underway for the painting of the Mural. We are aware that people are continuing to dump rubbish and vandalise the Two Rivers Bridge and have sent photos to TDC. If you see anyone acting suspiciously, please take note of registration numbers and let TDC know. Look out for changes at the Eves Valley Reserve. Goldpine have donated two
picnic tables and we are preparing concrete slabs ready for them. Min Wells has been working with DOC and the reserve has been fenced off making it a perfect place for a family picnic amongst native bush. We are looking for someone special to take care of the preparation of our Newsletter so if you are interested or know someone who could be please email us at rogers@ts.co.nz. Our next meeting will be held May 3, at 7.30pm in the Brightwater School Staffroom. All Welcome Your Community Association.

A working bee is taking place at the new BMX track on Saturday 30 April. BMX Track Upgrade The weekend weather kept its promise allowing a start on the upgrade of the Brightwater BMX Track. If you’ve been walking up and around the grounds at Lord Rutherford Park, you will have seen the 20 tonne digger busy at work over the last week or so. Thanks to Kelly Logging, for supplying the digger, and its tireless, dedicated driver – Kevin Searle – this unstoppable team have scraped, pushed, hoed, shaped and moulded the beginnings of our fantastic new BMX Track. The digger has been transported on site by the generous team at L & A Cotton Heavy Haulage. The digger is moving the bulk fill into the main jump and berm forms so you can now see how the track will look. Over the next two weeks there will be some smaller machines refining the contours and smoothing out the surface. WORKING BEE We will need keen workers for a working bee 9-4pm on Saturday, 30 April (weather permitting). Tasks will include
general digging and raking. The more effort we put in at this stage, the better the track will be for the children.Bring a shovel and rake (if you have one), there will also be a few available.Lunch Provided. After the Working Bee, it’s hoped the track will be ready for the ‘kids’ (and parents) seal of approval, and ready for use! Keep up to date with details on the Footie Signs Information Board, located alongside the BCA Notice board (by the Four Square). We wish to thank all of our sponsors thus far, who have donated their time, machinery, equipment, staff and funds to make this project happen.

April 25th 1915 Dear Diary It was before dawn as our boats sailed into land at Gallipoli beach. As the sun came up I saw the top of the cliff. Then a flame shot out of one of the tug boats. The flame flew through the dark foggy sky. I was scared. I knew the Turks were after us now. I heard a bang and a bullet zipped through the air above my head. Then two more shots rang out. I saw my mate Simon, he had been shot.

Ambushed on cliffs New Zealand soldiers went and fought to bring our country peace. Zebras were not part of ANZAC Day but donkeys were. A big mistake could make people die. Cookies called ANZAC biscuits are eaten usually around this time of ANZAC Day to remind us about the soldiers who fought for our country. Donkeys were most of the transport. A day to keep in our mind. You should remember this day. Keri Snodgrass 9 years

EASTER CHAMPIONSHIP S AT U R D AY 2 3 & S U N D AY 24 A P R I L
Nelson speedway season set to end with a big bang this Easter With some of the biggest names in speedway coming to Nelson this weekend, punters will be in for a spectacular two days of racing. The annual Easter Championships are taking place at the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speedway this Saturday and
Sunday and it looks set to be the biggest meeting held at the track this season. The weekend will provide a great chance for the public to see top drivers racing, and right here in Nelson. “Especially with the NZ Super Saloon title coming next year, it’s going to give everyone an insight into what that title is going to be like,” says club president Kris Carpenter. Most classes are almost at bursting point, with Kris saying “All the classes are just about full, we’re absolutely chocker.” Kris says this is very exciting for the club, as they haven’t had this amount of numbers for a long time.

Over both days of racing there will be plenty of action to keep everyone entertained but unfortunately the street stocks aren’t able to make it this year. “They scheduled their grand prix in Cromwell and we can’t run over the top of New Zealand titles so some people might be a little bit disappointed about that,” says Kris. The Easter Championships are run on the Saturday for all classes except midgets; who run their championship race on the Sunday because they are involved in a Barry Butterworth round on the Saturday. Gates open at 4pm on Saturday with racing starting at 5pm. On Sunday the gates open at 2pm with racing starting at 3pm. “Because it’s getting colder and the nights are coming in quite quickly we thought we’d pull it forward with Easter being so late in the year, we thought we’d help the punters out a little bit,” says Kris. The 2010/2011 season has been huge for the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speedway. Kris says the Easter Championships will be a good way to finish with a bang. “It will also give an indication of where we would like to be starting next season.” Unfortunately this weekend will be the second time a weekend of speedway has clashed with Crusaders games in Nelson. “It was too late [to change], we’d already released our entry forms, last time we pulled the meeting and went to just one night this time it’s a historical event, it’s a Aniseed Valley Rd, RD1, Richmond championship, so there is nothing we can do,” says Kris. In the Superstock class at the Easter Championships will see current New Zealand champion local Dale Ewers. There will also be the usual Blenheim visitors David and Brett Allan and Andre Way, and rarely seen visitor Robert Lee. Greg Rooney from Christchurch is also returning. The Midgets will be fighting it out for the Barry Butterworth Series and will see Nick Marquet, who was the first Nelson car home in last year’s Easter
Championships, leading the local charge again with track mates Andrew Brown, Dudley White and Paul Quinn. Current South Island champion Dave Kerr returns with fellow Cantabs Steve McCallum and Brian Barclay and Dunedin traveler Gavin Wilkie, who never misses a Nelson Midget meet. The Easter Championships see gate prices staying at the regular rate – adults $15, child $7, family $30 and under 5s are free. So make sure you don’t miss this weekend - the Easter Champs are set to go off with a bang!

Waimea College shine in pre-season netball tournament Carol Cook Waimea College 10A made every post a winning one when they swept all before them in the C Grade at the Geraldine Hodgson tournament held at the Saxton courts over the weekend. The C Grade was played in two sections, with the top seeds in each section going through to play the final. Waimea had amassed 172 goals and 53 against in their six games before meeting Richmond Sleepers in the final. Coach Mandy Whiting played all her players in every game and her charges rose to the challenge and were more than willing to give 100 percent in unaccustomed positions. Waimea found their rhythm early in the final with goal attack Brittani Harrington shouldering a hefty load of court work as she supplied Shaun Aindow with quality ball to convert with ease. Although Waimea had one hand on the trophy at the break with the score at 12-4 it was Richmond who finished the better in the second stanza, only to come up short by 15-12. Another pleasing aspect of Waimea’s play was they were not afraid to let the long ball go and played nice lines. Garin, also competing in C
Grade, had a four win two loss record but played some enterprising netball. With only three players returning from last year coach Sarah Rankin used the tournament to finalise her roster and dabble with combinations. Year 10 Michaela Powick impressed at centre, providing a pivotal link through court she worked to apply pressure on every pass. Cheyenne Sigley was content to take the feeding role in the shooting circle while Dakota Sigley found her target well. Circle defender Emma Greep worked tirelessly throughout and rebounded effectively. Waimea College 9A coach Anne Wicken had her work cut out as she tried to put eleven players on the court on both days. The tournament was used as a final trial to establish the A and B teams. While the majority of the players had come from Waimea Intermediate they were all keen to impress. Ruby Jensen put in a sterling effort in the mid court while Katie Thompson also toiled. Morgan Inch returned some excellent shooting statistics and was well supported by Anika Paton. Georgia Davies and Hannah Davenhill were the backbone of the defensive third, positioning themselves well to gain the rebound.
Sports In BrIef FOOTBALL: Richmond Athletic triumphed over the Marlborough Mariners on Saturday, winning 7-0. The squad continue their winning form with two goals from Ben Wright and Wes Olea, and goals to Jordan Yong, Jorge Donoso and Dan Grimshaw. The boys take on FC Nelson College at The Broads from 3pm this Saturday. RUGBY: Waimea College 1st XV took on Napier Boys High School on Monday but were unable to win on home soil. The final score was 32-7.

WOB women aim to bring home the bacon this season Teresa Hattan The Stables Tavern Waimea Old Boys women side say they are itching to get out on the paddock next Saturday. The squad has acquired a few players since they last featured on the Waimea Old Boys rugby page, but the girls say they could still do with a few more. But what would be great for the ladies is to have some supporters along to their first game on April 30 against Marist at Tahuna from 1.15pm. Player Stacey Pyers says it has been great having a few new people turn up because the team can go through the basics again. The team have a heap of strong players - this could have something to do with a large number of last year’s team coming READY TO GO: Michelle Welsh with team mascot Cheezil, Gemma Milne and back for more this season. “There will be no Stacey Pyers are itching to get out on the park next Saturday. Having their first game against a resurgent women’s Marist team will be exciting, as the opposition have been out of the competition for around 10 years. “It’s great they’re back in it,” say the girls. The ladies say they are aiming for the top of the women’s division this year. “Aiming for the final I think is a good goal, winning our first game is our first goal and then working on it each week from there, trying to step it up each week,” says Stacey. The ladies are looking forward to getting the first game over and done with and they say they will just go from there. “You don’t really know what it’s going to be like until that first game, it’s all good at training but once you get on the field it’s a bit different,” says Stacey.
