Sheep showing still worthwhile When Brightwater farmer Mal Irvine first started showing sheep at the Nelson A&P Show about 25 years ago it was critical to their stud farm’s success. The show was the shop window for sheep breeders looking to promote their stud and attracted hundreds of prospective buyers from farms throughout Nelson and Marlborough. It was serious business with breeders spending hours selecting and grooming sheep for the show and if a farmer was lucky enough to win a class it could add considerable value to their line of sheep. But the glory days of sheep showing are long gone and when Mal, who has been breeding Suffolk and Romney’s with his brother Don for over 30 years, takes their stud’s prize ram and ewe hoggets to the Golden Edge Nelson A&P Show at Richmond Park this weekend it will be a low key affair. Kids rip off elderly parents Sons and daughters are draining the bank accounts of their elderly parents, says Age Concern, with around 50 reported cases in Nelson and Tasman this year. Age Concern came forward with its concerns around elder abuse in the region after reading the new chief medical officer’s comments about Nelson and Tasman’s ageing population in last week’s Waimea Weekly. Age Concern Nelson manager Sue Tilby says Dr Nick Baker is spot on to highlight the issue and they are disturbed and concerned about the increasing number of abuse cases they are working on. This year alone the organisation has 65 proven cases of abuse in Nelson and Tasman, 14 of those for self-neglect, the rest by carers ripping off older people. “We see a huge amount of financial abuse here in Nelson, a huge amount,” says Sue. “It mainly comes from family members, in fact 77 per cent is from sons and

daughters ripping off their parents.” She says others befriend older people with an ulterior motive to rip them off. She says it’s hard to get the money back and in two separate cases this year they’ve seen one woman befriend a lonely elderly lady only to have massive cheques written for her. Because the woman signed the cheque they can’t get the money back. Another case was a carer who was given an elderly woman’s credit card and pin number. She used it to withdraw $25,000 for herself. Because the woman supplied her with her pin number, no charges were laid and the bank refused to try to recover the money. She says sometimes they can SEE PAGE 2

Children rip off elderly parents Sheep showing FROM PAGE 1 try to recover the money. Sometimes they can press charges on the abusers, through police, if the victim will give them permission to investigate. Often they can’t. Other major issues are family members not putting elderly parents into homes because they don’t want them to spend their money, or stealing their money once they are in the homes. “People know the care is costly if they’re not entitled to a subsidy and they see it as their money, their right disappearing far too early and people don’t want their parents to spend their money. We’ve seen an older parent live in appalling basement conditions in a son and daughter’s house because they want to keep that person there because of the money side of it. It’s awful,” she says. “On the other side of the coin, one that pops up quite frequently is we’ll get a call from a rest home saying that a person there has no money and then they find out that the family member managing their money has taken it.” Age Concern’s Jess Breeze says selfneglect is also a big issue and of the 14 cases this year she has seen some horrible living conditions. “There have been several really bad cases this year but one of the worst was coming across a client who had very advanced dementia and he wasn’t able to live in his home because there was no space to walk and there was rotting food and rodents and things. It was squalor.” She says the best way to help those people is for neighbours and family to report any concerns they may have. Age Concern has just three staff with a fourth likely to join soon, as the workload continues to increase. Age Concern’s main role is to provide support, advice and advocacy information but it also provides education around elder abuse and organises a volunteer visitor service. Sue says she was thrilled to read Dr Nick Baker’s comments in the Weekly last week, where he stated the growing population of elderly in Nelson was a “major concern”. “We’ve done a bit of research and we’re going to have a higher than average older person ratio. Everyone’s scrambling and trying to keep on top of it but if we don’t act now it could turn into a huge crisis.” FROM PAGE 1 “When I first started taking sheep to the show 20 or 30 years ago the pens were always full and good numbers of famers came from all around the district,” Mal says. “But it’s a bit different today because farmers don’t really go to the shows to look for sheep - you’ll see more town people walking through the pens than farmers.” Mal says there are a number of reasons for the decline in the size and importance of the sheep section of the show including the obvious decline in sheep numbers

still worthwhile around the country. He also considers that farmers are looking for “practical sheep breeds that can perform on the farm” rather than the “pampered breeds”. However, Mal says he still enjoys going to the show and “it’s a good opportunity to see what other farmers are doing”. He also likes to support the show because it’s a good occasion and gives town people a chance to see the different sheep breeds. The Nelson A and P Show will be open from 9am to 5pm on Saturday and 9am to 4pm on Sunday.

We hunt all year round and we’ve got some real issues as far as deer goes. They are very susceptible and die a horrible death, in agony.” Local pig hunter Gray Parkinson says there is no doubt other animals will suffer from the drop. “If it doesn’t kill other animals then it wouldn’t be working. All I know is I have been in places that have been 1080’d and it’s just quiet. There is no birdlife, no sound.” In contrast, one local organisation is pleased the drop is going ahead. Forest and Bird supports the use of the poison as the only way of protecting native birdlife from predators such as stoats and rats, says Nelson Tasman branch secretary Gillian Pollock. “Bird, lizard and insect life does come back in abundance after 1080 is used, it is noticeable after the following breeding season.” The operation is due to be completed by December 5.

Cycle trail to Kaiteriteri ‘by Christmas’ Senior reporter Reporter

Simon Bloomberg simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Mapua Ferry owner-operator Andrew Schwass can’t wait for the weather to get warmer and the Tasman Great Taste Cycle Trail to get longer. Andrew is just starting the second season at the helm of the flat-bottomed ferry that provides a water bridge for cyclists between Rabbit Island and Mapua. After a slow winter when the ferry’s sailings were limited to weekends, Andrew says business is picking up with a summer sailing schedule now operating and around 250 passengers taking the ferry last Sunday. “It’s a very seasonal business and we’ll get more passengers when it starts getting warmer. The weekdays are pretty quiet but we were busy at the school holidays and we’ll be busy again around Christmas.” However, what Andrew really wants is for the trail to reach the key destination of Kaiteriteri and then the final section from Kaiteriteri to Wakefield via the Motueka Valley to be completed. When it is finished, the Great Taste Cycle Trail will join Nelson, Richmond, Mapua, Kaiteriteri, Tapawera, Kohatu and Wakefield in a 175km loop. Andrew says the completed sections of the trail are presently being used by cyclists from the Nelson-Tasman region and needs the added incentive of a destination like Kaiteriteri or a complete loop

Andrew says they are just managing to “keep our head above water” and can’t wait for the trail to be completed. However, he says the Tasman District Council are doing a good job of building the trail because they have had to deal with so many issues like land ownership and funding. “What it really needs is for John Key to throw another million dollars at it,” Andrew says. Chairperson of the Cycle Trails Trust, which is responsible for marketing, maintaining and seeking new funding for the trail, Gill Wratt agrees that reaching Kaiteriteri and then completing the loop are critical to its success. “When we get to Kaiteriteri it will make it a more marketable ride and we can start to promote it nationally. Once the loop is completed then we can really start to say it is an international bike ride.” Gill says extending the trail from Wakefield through to Kohatu will also be key because riding through the disused Spooner’s Tunnel will appeal to a lot of cyclists. The council’s development engineer Dugald Ley says they are on target to reach Kaiteriteri by Christmas although a small section will have to wait until the realignment of the road at Turner’s Bluff is completed. Cyclists will have to ride on the road for about 300m until the realignment is finished and a cycle underpass is installed. Dugald says contractors are presently working on the trail near Aporo Rd after one of the key landowners, Alan Trent, agreed to allow the trail to go through his land.

Tapawera Win $5000 for Christmas rugby club broken into The Tapawera Rugby Club has been broken into three times this year and its former president Tony Firth says it is a “real pain in the arse”. Two of the break ins have occurred within the last month, one happening on the same afternoon as the local show day. Generally it appears alcohol has been the target with a “minor” amount of RTD bottles being taken. Tony estimated the value to be just $30. However, on one occasion a shelf holding bottles of alcohol was broken after one of the alleged thieves attempted to climb it to get into the chiller, Tony claims. He says three club members were left to clean up the mess. “I was down there for six hours on that day fixing up the door to the bar and cleaning up. It was just a mess mate,” says Tony. “There was quite a bit of broken glass and broken bottles and damage done like that.” Tony, who is on the committee of the rugby club, believed it was a group of youths that were the culprits, and he says a lot of parents in the community needed to be aware of what their children were up to. “Tapawera is a small community and they think their kids are safe walking the street. Yeah that is true but the flipside is a lot of them don’t know what the kids are getting up to. There are seven, eight, nine year olds and I honestly think parents need to take responsibility.” Tony says the incidents have been reported to the police, and while the club believed they knew who it was, no one has been caught yet. “They’ve got rules they’ve got to follow so they can’t just go see the kid who is at the top of my list. But the police do have finger prints.” Tony says the Tapawera Rugby Club would “have to up its game” and is likely to install security cameras and alarms, which will be an added cost, in order to prevent the thefts. “We’re in the process of getting those priced at the moment but there’s other things we’d like to be spending our money on like upgrades to the clubrooms or new rugby jerseys for kids. We’d rather do that than spend money on security because some little gromit keeps breaking into our clubrooms.” Richmond Mall manager Belinda de Clerq says customers are excited that Shop ‘n’ Win has returned. This year’s Shop ‘n’ Win is looking likely to break all previous records, with more and more people entering to win $5000. Shop ‘n’ Win is run by Waimea Weekly, Richmond Unlimited and the participating businesses. It gives one lucky shopper a chance to win $5000 for Christmas, just by buying something and filling out an entry form at one of the participating stores.

The business also has a chance to win, with $2000 up for grabs to the successful retailer. Selected stores in Richmond, and stores in the Richmond Mall are taking part and its manager Belinda de Clerq says customers are excited the promotion is back. “It’d be a beautiful Christmas present for anyone and all of the retailers are excited to try to win $2000.”

“Is Broods New Zealand’s next pop wonder?” – that’s the headline US website Billboard decided to throw on top of their interview with Nelson musos Georgia and Caleb Nott, who have attracted plenty of interest since releasing their debut single Bridges last month. The former Garin College students, who were members of The Peasants when they were at high school, were praised by Billboard – one of the world’s premier music magazines and websites. Billboard’s contributing author Jason Lipshutz was, like many other journalists,

Local duo Nott far behind Lorde quick to point out the ties Broods have with Lorde who currently tops the Billboard Hot 100 – the American music industry standard singles popularity chart. Georgia, 19, and Caleb, 21, have been working closely with Joel Little who produced Lorde’s debut album “Pure Heroine”, and of course, Broods and Lorde are young New Zealanders, so for international media it’s easy to draw comparisons. “The associations with Lorde are natural – and like ‘Royals,’ Broods' ‘Bridges’ is a startling single that yearns to be heard again and again,” Billboard wrote. “‘Bridges’,

times since being uploaded to the band’s Sound Cloud page last month and multiple YouTube channels are already posting the audio, with one also topping 200,000 views. Georgia has often been praised for her stunning vocals. At the time of winning National Smokefreerockquest, judge and NZ on Air repertoire executive Tania Dean said it was “totally different from any other New Zealand singer,” and labeled it “powerful, emotional and dynamic”. The Peasants split late last year, and Georgia and Caleb are now living in Auckland.

Motorcyclists invited on ‘dice run’ around Tasman All motorcyclists are being encouraged to get out for the annual Route 6 motorcycle club Dice Run. This Saturday, more than 100 motorcyclists are expected to take part in the mystery 160km round trip, which starts and finishes in Richmond. Participants can sign up for $15 from the Stables Richmond car park before 10:30am. From 11am sharp the riders will then head into Tasman stopping off at five pubs along the way, where they will get to roll the dice at each stop. The rider with the highest total at the end of the day will get a cash prize and there are plenty of other spot prizes on offer too.

Club captain Richard Eddington says the event, now in its third year, has been popular and all motorcyclists are welcomed. “In the past we’ve done a poker run, but it’s easy with the dice,” he says. “It’s just a great day out. Once a year we do it and it’s quite amazing to see 150 bikes on the road together. It’s a mystery ride, and none of them no where we’re going except for the lead rider who is the club president.” At each pub the publican will hand a bottle of spirits to the owner of his or hers favourite motorcycle. All of the prizes will be dished out at the Abbey, where there will also be a free bar- Route 6 motorcycle club captain Richard Eddington prepares for this Saturday’s Dice Run. All beque. Blow out leads to scrap between two car shows A scrap has broken out between the committee of the Nelson Car Show and one of its former members, who is the organiser of the new Nelson Motor Show. Last week the committee of the Nelson Car Show issued a statement that they were in no way associated with the new show and claimed that its organiser Steve Steele stole their dates and location for the 2014 show, which will be its tenth. Steve was a committee member of the Nelson Car Show and helped organise it for a number of years. He and fellow committee member Rik Thomas left the committee in September and told the remaining committee members they were starting a new show. “[Mr Steele advised] us that he was starting a new event, using our previously confirmed venue and dates,” wrote the remaining car show committee members, Karl Tompson, Justin Radford, Graeme and Wendy Blincoe. “This event… has been given a very similar name to the original Nelson Car Show, and Mr Steele continues to make statements implying that his event is a continuation of the Nelson Car Show. This is untrue. The Nelson Car Show is no longer in any way affiliated with Steve Steele or his recently formed event.” But Steve says he left because organisation of the Nelson Car Show Trust was shambolic and he didn’t want to be a part of it. He says the 2014 event was canned by the committee so he left to start his own show. “The reason they shut down is because they were having inhouse problems. So I said I’m outta here.” The Nelson Motor Show will be held on February 14-16 at the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park. The Nelson Car Show committee says their tenth show will be held the weekend before the motor show at Tahuna beach and it will be free. “We find ourselves once again facing hurdles due to circumstances beyond our control. [But] the show will go on,” they wrote.

Charity concert close to sell out This week I want to let you know about the change that’s about to take place to the law in relation to anyone supplying alcohol to people under 18 years of age. At present it is an offence to buy alcohol for a minor, unless you are their parent or guardian or you supply the alcohol at a private gathering. New rules being introduced from 18 December will place more restrictions around who can legally supply alcohol to a minor and in what conditions. These new conditions are all about ensuring anyone who is supplying alcohol to a minor is doing so in a safe and responsible way. It means is that if you choose to supply your teenager with alcohol you will be required to supervise the consumption of that alcohol. “Responsible supply” of alcohol to teenagers includes ensuring food and nonalcoholic drinks are also available, making sure safe transport is provided and being responsible about the quantity and strength of the alcohol supplied. The intention of this law change is to ensure parents and guardians who supply alcohol to teenagers use a bit of common sense and continue to take responsibility for their welfare during and after the drinking taking place. All too often my staff deal with drunken teenagers and out of control parties where parents have bought alcohol for their kids then let them go off out with their mates. To be honest, it astonishes me how many parents regularly do this sort of thing and more often than not it ends in tears. With this law change, those parents or guardians will now have to step up and take full responsibility for their actions. Failure to do so could result in you being fined up to $2000. We all know teenagers aren’t great judges of what is safe or unsafe at the best of times. Add to that mix a belly full of alcohol and we create extremely vulnerable people. Their decision making will be compromised and they become easy targets for criminals. This law simply aims to keep kids safe by preventing offending and victimisation. I think it sends a pretty clear message to parents that they need to be a whole lot more responsible about what they’re allowing their kids to do. If not, they will be held to account. A concert organised to raise funds for Ranui House is expected to sell out, with only a few tickets remaining. The Music Concert Fundraiser will be held on November 30 at Hope Community Church from 7:30pm and will feature a line-up of accomplished musicians and young stars. Performers include the Gabor Trio, which features George Rutledge and pianist Gabor Tolney, music teacher John Phillips, and a quarter of Garin College musicians including New Zealand’s Got Talent semi-finalist Gabriella Atkinson. The idea for the fundraiser came from

Dozens of Nelson residents stay there for every year. Peter was so thankful for the service that he decided to organise three fundraising events with all of the donations going back to Ranui House. Tickets are $20 per person and can be bought from Hope Community Church, Waimea Weekly, Nelson Weekly and the Richmond Mall.

WWI collection goes online Just a thought... Next year marks a century since the beginning of the First World War and there are several local projects planned to help commemorate it, including one that will feature 2000 local faces. War was declared by Britain in August 1914 and among the millions that fought were thousands from Nelson and Tasman. Before they went to serve for King and country many of the men would have a portrait taken, an opportunity to take a photograph of their family with them or for their families to keep while they went away says Cliff Riordan, of the museum. “Sadly many of these men may not have returned home. So in many cases it would be the last image of them. That’s quite tragic.” The Nelson Provincial Museum has around 2000 of those photos in its collection, many forming part of the Glass Plate Collection that has been digitised and put online. Cliff says the timing of those photos being put online couldn’t be better and it will allow local families to go onto its website and look for ancestors that may have served. “We’ve currently got over 30,000 images online, a large number of those are from that period – 1914 to 1918 – and a lot of them are in uniform. It’s actually a really valuable resource and its timing, as far as the centenary of WWI goes, is perfect.” Cliff says the museum has a good Our 12 year old son came back from the intermediate programme, run on a Sunday at our local church, absolutely buzzing and excited about the activities they had just been a part of. Under his arm he proudly carried the fruits of their labours: a homemade, air pressured rocket made from a couple of plastic fizzy bottles and powered by air pumped into the bottle partially filled with water. The pride of a young mans’ activities. “Looks like you had fun”, I said to him. “What were they teaching you about today?” Well he had no worries at all recalling the topic. It turns out after building, pumping up and then firing these homemade missiles high into the air they had then discussed life from the perspective of: “Every action has a reaction.” What a truth to bounce off when exploring choices and the consequences in the lives of these young men and women. The bible couches it in different terms but in essence

Photo: Andrew Board. collection of portraits but also photos from the Tapawera Military Camp, thanks to local photographer F N Jones who served. “F N Jones is a great source because he served and he took a lot of photographs at Tapawera Military Camp and they are fantastic, really lovely images of dayto-day life in the camp.” The majority of the photographs are named but there are some that aren’t and Cliff says they’d be happy to hear from anyone who recognises one of the unnamed photos. “This is a great resource for family historians and hopefully from this we’ll be able to identify some of the soldiers. If anyone does know anything about any of the photographs in our collection we’d love to know.” To send any information to the museum about any of the photos in the glass plate collection simply email details to history@ museumnp.org.nz.

it says the same: “As a person sows, so they reap.” This statement is both an encouragement and a challenge. As we each consider our lives, our friendships, our marriages, our parenting, our work, and our recreation, how are we doing with this? What are we sowing though our words, thoughts and actions? And as a result what are we reaping? What “fruit” is coming from that which we have sown? Some things in life are far beyond our control but others things can be greatly impacted and shaped by being very intentional with what we sow and as a result what we grow. While we have breath we have the privilege of shaping our lives and the lives of others. As a community and a nation let’s continue to choose to live intentionally, sowing words, thoughts and actions in our personal lives and our work environments, that will bring life, fruit and encouragement to others. Ranzau pet day another success Ranzau School went to the dogs last Friday when about 50 pupils brought their family’s best friend, or in some cases were dragged along by their faithful companions, to the school’s pet day. Pet Day is always popular with Ranzau’s pupils and invariably it’s the dogs that provide more entertainment than the guinea pigs, cats, tadpoles and even rabbits. After a relatively quiet morning, the school turned into a frenzy of barking, butt sniffing and tail wagging as dogs of all

shapes, sizes, breeds took over the school grounds. Despite the apparent canine chaos, principal Dave Sampson says they managed to keep the dogs under control. “We have never had any problems although we make sure we bring the cats and other small animals in the morning and then take them home before the dogs come in the afternoon,” Dave says.

Another highlight of Pet Day was a visit from Natureland’s Christine Ewers who brought along a tortoise, giant rabbit, blue tongued lizard and cockatiel for the children to hold on to. Vickki Pickering of You and Your Dog also talked to the children about looking after the family hound. “The kids enjoyed seeing some unusual animals and getting a chance to handle them. It was a really nice event and it was a chance to get the parents and families down here,” Dave says.

The goal was simple: “To get kids fishing again”. And having seen the smiles on childrens’ faces as a result of hooking their first ever rainbow trout, trustees of the Sport Fishing for Youth Charitable Trust believe it is working. Just four years ago the trustees were looking at “bare land”, says Richard Boyden. Now they fish alongside children at three functional fishing ponds filled with hundreds of rainbow trout, some up to nine pounds in weight, adjacent to the Waimea River. The trust schedules kids fishing days where children between the ages of six and 16 are taught how to catch a trout. Volunteers, who have a background in fishing, are on hand with a net for those lucky enough to land one. Once the fish is caught, the child takes it over to be weighed, cleaned and gutted. Richard is a member of the Nelson Trout Fishing Club and says young people just aren’t joining anymore. “We need more kids off the street, off the computer and fishing,” he explains, helping out at the second to last kids fishing day of the year. When asked if it had exceeded

Photo: Phillip Rollo. expectations, Richard believed it had. “We’re all very pleased and very much happy with the whole thing. Seeing the smiles on the parents, the photos taken, the kids are loving it and they want to come back.” The Sport Fishing for Youth Charitable Trust this year took out the supreme title at the TrustPower Nelson Tasman Community Awards. Representatives for the trust will next year attend the national awards ceremony, but reflecting on the win, Richard says in some ways it has worked against the charity. “All the funding people they get lots of applications and they probably figure anyone with a supreme award will probably be right [without it]. So we’ve lost out on about half of it.” It costs $5000 to purchase 336 rainbow trout from the Canterbury Fish Hatchery, and Richard estimates another injection of fish will be needed come-February. “But we’re accomplishing what we want and that’s the main thing.” The next kids fishing day will be held on December 15 and anyone looking for their children to participate can book in at Fish & Game on Champion Rd. Richard says helpers, who need to have a passion in fishing, are also needed.

Your Voice telecom brought to you by surnames after what occupation we had. William Cleaver. It’s a pretty fair law. Excusing this above case but it’s cruel to the child naming him/her something ridiculous like anal, talula does the hula or a freaking symbol e.g “*” “.” (Via website). You could understand vulgar names being banned but seriously. Who do these toss pots think they are, banning names like this? Just another control governments would like to use to keep their people under rule. Good on you for fighting for your rights. Peter Cannon. Best name ever heard is La-a. It’s not Laa or Lauh. It’s Ladasha because the dash don’t be silent. Naming Game. I have a relative that wanted to call her daughter Justice, it was not allowed but she was allowed Justyce. Stupid as its said the same way. A Relative. You should be able to call your child whatever you like apart from swear words as your child has the right to change their own name when they are old enough if they do not like it. But a name should be something that is well thought about as there are so many ways for bullying these days and names are one of them unfortunately. Aleisha Brunell.

Baby names gets rejected: Just wanna say that I think parents should be able to name their children whatever they like as long they are decent. If I wanted to call my daughter Princess I should have that right without it being rejected by Internal Affairs. Get with the times. Stuart R Cole. What utter garbage. Since when has it been a law that people can’t call their new born what ever they want? Hell we came from a society that gave us

Aleisha - “your child has the right to change their own name when they are old enough if they do not like it” - that won’t take back years of likely bullying at school/lost opportunities at an early age being given an incredibly fringe name. The law has a definite role here, in this case it was wrong/the lady makes a convincing case/was successful in her case to have it overturned. B Morgan Murrah. Tahuna BBQs: We used the new BBQ at Tahuna Beach the other night and loved it. Thanks NCC. (Via text). Police crack down on drivers: I read with interest your article on Nelson Police targeting car enthusists in town for the 4 and Rotary championships. As someone who attended both events of the champs I think it was great what the police were doing. I was stopped twice, no problems so I went through. People got upset at it but I personally have no problem. Daniel (Via text). No dogs at Village: It has been brought to our attention, over the last few days, that prospective buyers looking at properties in Waimea Village have dogs, and it would seem that they have been given to understand that there is a probability that this would now be acceptable. It is not, and never has been. The Lease agreement firmly states that no dogs are allowed in the Village. There is no likelihood of this being changed. Could you please advise your

salespeople and branches of this matter, as it is causing unnecessary grief to prospective buyers, and just creating another uncertainty for existing residents. Yours faithfully, Jerry Rowland, chairman, Waimea Village Residents Association. Ageing population: I like the way Dr Nick Baker says our aging population is not only a concern but also a strength for our region. It can be scary thinking about retirement and health for many people not in a position to afford medical insurance with premuims escalating as you get older. Encouaging people to consider ways to improve their health rather than totally relying on the ‘health system’ will always be best but I find it staggering that Southern Cross a non-profit organisation, can be so bias against the elderly penalising people who rarely claim. After 5 years of insurance and nil claims the premiums became too expensive for us and we were only just knocking 50. I hope Grey Power has some sucess in establishing another form of insurance policy, but the government should be investigating this, not them. Sue Wilson. CUS ON WAKEFIELD

Saturday 16 November 2pm - 4pm

Holiday window for Wakefield Pharmacy Christmas has definitely come to Wakefield, with festive cheer cropping up all over the place. If you’ve been wondering what’s been going on down at Wakefield Pharmacy, a local artist has been giving the window a bit of merriment. Laura Wells, famous for her work around Wakefield has designed a stunning window to decorate the front of the pharmacy, which will stay for the duration of the summer holidays. She says the Pohutukawa tree design adorned with Christmas decorations and native birds was the perfect way to showcase a kiwi Christmas in the window. “I’ve really enjoyed the process, having taken a bit of time off my art since having a child, it’s been a great project to get back into it.” Check it out next time you pass the pharmacy, you can’t miss it. Right: Local artist Laura Wells has designed a stunning Christmas window for the Wakefield Pharmacy. She spent the weekend on the project and it will remain as the window feature for the summer holidays.

Helping Nelson Take Off For Nelson Airport has been helping people take off for 75 years – a huge milestone for a town that every year sees more people touch down at its airport every year than the region’s entire population. Nelson’s aviation history started with the landing of an Avro 504 in 1921 and has since seen the town flourish to become one of the busiest centres for scheduled flights in the country. To celebrate the significant anniversary, people are invited to a free community open day at the airport, Saturday November 30, between 10am and 4pm. Nelson has come a long way in aviation since that first plane landing, which was actually bound for Brightwater but ran short of fuel prompting a stop at Marsden paddock in Stoke. The town’s isolation by mountains and sea meant that travel by air was met with enthusiasm by the entire community and was grabbed with both hands by the Harbour Board, who spearheaded plans to bring a functioning commercial airfield to the region. So Nelson

‘Rusty’ old steam tractor Fishing restored and ready to go Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club with Phillip Rollo It was nothing but a rusty garden ornament when Dave Walker found it. “It was rusting away,” he says. “It was only scrap value.” But the 1901 Clayton and Shuttleworth steam tractor he has just finished restoring is now worth between $200,000 and $300,000, and he says it’s set for a new home at the Pigeon Valley Steam Museum. “I’ll never sell it.” Dave, an Appleby engineer, has spent the past few months and $32,000 restoring the machine so it would be ready for the Nelson A&P Show’s 125th Anniversary. “It’s had a complete rebuild. But it was quite easy as an engineer. You can’t get a lot of the parts so you have to cast them but the majority of the tractor was in tact,” he says. “There hasn’t been a steam engine down at the A&P Show for 50-60 years.” He had always been after a steam traction engine to restore and finally came across one he liked when visiting Jackson’s Estate Winery in Woodbourne where owner John Stitchbury agreed to the joint project. “Any time I heard about an engine somewhere I went and had a look. I went all over the South Island. This one hasn’t been fired up for 50-60 years and it was very satisfying when it was first steamed up again.” This particular tractor was used for agricultural work, pulling trailers, carting goods, but Dave was unsure of its exact history. “Clayton and Shuttleworth made more steam Open Home engines than all of the other makes together,” he The last couple of weeks have produced some stunning fishing days and the Saturday just gone was proof with a temperature in the mid 20’s. Because of the lovely warm weather and little rain, the water temperature has also shot up accordingly and is near enough to that magical snapper figure of 18 degrees. The first snapper will be starting to spawn and from now on they will tend to be a bit more tentative in their feeding habits. This will mean a slight change of tactics may be required to entice the snapper on the bite. Smaller baits will probably work in your favour on flasher rigs with smaller hooks when fishing on the rods. The setline will still be a good option as a backup using small squid baits. The snapper this season seem to be generally larger than last season averaging around the 35-45cm and are absolutely the perfect size for the dinner table. Although there have been reports of plenty of fish over 10kg and some closer to 15kg. These big fish can strike any time and you need to make sure your rod, reel, nylon and tackle are up for the challenge. Last weekend on our boat, we dropped the setline in 20 metres of water. We stray lined a pilchard from the back of the boat as we drifted away from the setline and landed a 6kg snapper within 5 minutes of fishing. Several other big fish Doug McKay with a 6kg snapper caught straylining with a pillie in Tasman Bay last Sunday.

Appleby engineer Dave Walker with his restored 1901 Clayton and Shuttleworth steam tractor. Photo: Phillip Rollo. says. “Most of them were rollers but there’s only about five of them in New Zealand and this is probably the only one under certification.” Dave, who has been an engineer for 41 years now, says the project was a big achievement. “Just because of the state it was in on the 15th of April and now it’s all been done, it’s fully steamed. It’s lovely.” Before it’s taken to the steam museum, the tractor, which goes by the nickname Jacko, will be used for various Christmas events in Nelson and Christchurch.

hit this same rig within 5 minutes of each other but dropped the bait after feeling the weight come on and that was it for the next 2 hours as the tide changed. Some smaller fish did come back on the bite and were landed on the rods. The carpet sharks are still in abundance, but so are the large schools of 2 kilo plus kahawai. Last week the large school of kahawai and associated birdlife that have been seen outside the cut by boaties over the last few weeks, came in close to Fifeshire Rock and Rocks Road. This activity saw land based anglers flocking down to get amongst the action. Heaps of kahawai were caught and it was great to see all the kids out their enjoying the occasion with the bigger kids as well. With all the kahawai around the kingfish will be following closely behind. The Boulder Bank and the spat farm must be due to go off very soon. Kenepuru has still been a bit patchy with a 10kg fish taken recently, but the 7 gillers are still there to make life a bit harder. The weather is predicted to be reasonably good during the week and into the following week, so get all the chores done asap. The fishing will only get better leading up to Christmas so get out there while you can. As always, come and see us at the club for all the latest news on what’s working and where the action is.

WOB trio secure Super spots The success of its three best players could hamper Waimea Old Boys’ chances of winning back to back championships but club president Duane Whiting can only see the positives following the announcement James Lowe, Marty Banks and Billy Guyton had landed Super Rugby contracts. James was easily the club player of the year but is unlikely to pull on the red and white hoops next season having signed a Super Rugby contract with the Chiefs following a breakthrough season at both club and provincial level. And James won’t be the only absentee either. Marty, who had a starring role in the club final, has signed with the Hurricanes and has a good chance to start for them at fullback, meaning he is also unlikely to have anything more than a small cameo at the grassroots level during the midseason test window. The third loss could be utility Billy, who ran the show at first five. He has been selected in the Hurricanes wider training group following a fine ITM Cup season at halfback for the Tasman Makos. Only three past Waimea Old Boys players – former Crusaders wing Blair Cook, current Blues prop Sam Prattley and former Crusaders wider training squad member

Bridget Budget answers your questions Q: Christmas is coming and I don’t want my children to miss out. Should I just buy everything using my store card and pay it off? A: Plan your Christmas so you can spoil the kids without spoiling the year paying off Christmas debt (at high interest!). Here are some suggestions:  Have Christmas at the beach: A picnic, beach cricket and sandcastles will give the kids a day to remember.  Plan activities and days out that are fun and free. Children will remember the fun they had and the time you spent with them– not the expensive gift.  Create your owns gifts: make vouchers, grow pot-plants, make cards, sweets or biscuits. Find some other great ideas here- http:// familycrafts.about.com/od/giftstomake/tp/ HomeMadeGiftIdeas.htm  Thoughtful or creative gifts are better than expensive ones. Don’t get manipulated by marketing hype. Give yourself permission to have the Christmas you can afford. Contact us for help planning your Christmas. We offer free, confidential advice for everyone.

Nelson Tigers driver Jared Gray gets shunted into the wall by Ricky Boulton during the McCall Trophy on Saturday. Photo: Tom Laney/Imagepress.co.nz.

Tigers roar in opener A one, two finish has seen the Nelson Tigers cruise past the Canterbury Glen Eagles in a relatively tame superstock teams race on Saturday night. Shane Harwood took the checkered flag with usual blocker Blair Cunningham making the most of a rare running role to finish second place ahead of Canterbury’s Malcolm Ngatai. The race plan saw two drivers, Shane and Blair, drag the Canterbury drivers through the 12 laps while Dale Ewers and Jared Gray were given the blocking duties. Malcolm was the quickest driver out of the starting blocks, but was eventually mowed down by the Tigers duo after just three laps. “It was pretty easy in the end. It all went to plan,” says team selector Wayne Martin. “The Christchurch car was winning but we knew if we just sat behind him that our blockers would sort him out. Shane and Blair then ran through after about the third lap.” Blair’s running role may have caught the Glen Eagles by surprise, as he’s generally a blocker. Wayne says that decision was made to compensate for the

heavy workload, with three races in three weeks, and to keep the opposition guessing. “Blair’s car is on the pace in his tank so we have no problems with them racing. We said just pin our ears back and go.” While the win means Nelson holds onto the McCall Trophy for another year, Wayne says the focus now turns to Palmerston North for this weekend’s annual Challenge Cup clash with the Panthers. Last year the Tigers lost the Challenge Cup to Palmerston North here in Nelson.

Start of sea swim series Ireland Steenbergen comes out of the water after winning the short course race on the opening night of the Port Nelson Sea Swim series held last Thursday. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. The Port Nelson Summer Sea Swim series continues to ride a wave of popularity with a record 174 swimmers taking the plunge on the opening night of the series last Thursday. That’s a big increase on the handful of swimmers that lined up in the series when it started 25 years ago and one of the organisers Dick Bennison says he’s not surprised at the growth. Sea swimming is becoming increasingly popular all around the country and Dick says the Port Nelson series is no exception. “It started as a small group of triathletes getting together for a swim and when I joined up 15 years ago we only had about 30 swimmers. It’s been growing steadily over the last three or four years and now we are up to 170 and we’re still getting registrations coming in.” Dick says there are a number of reasons for the popularity of sea swimming nationally including the fact that it is gaining a higher profile in the media and is the perfect low-impact sport for ageing athletes. For the record, Fraser Neill was the fastest male over the long course completing the 650 metres in 7 minutes 38 seconds with Amy Coulton the fastest female in 8min 28 sec. The series is held at the Nelson Yacht Club every Thursday at 6.15pm over the summer.

The Nelson Senior Open was played in Richmond over the weekend with the local players winning a fair share of the silverware. Nelson men’s pair of Andre Van Rooyen and David Averill beat two Canterbury players to win the doubles title at the Tasman Tennis Centre on Sunday. In the men’s singles final top Nelson player Kenta Naka fell to Christchurch’s Jamie Poole but local player Melle Van Duijn won the men’s singles plate convincingly 6-0, 6-1 over Oscar Symonds. In the women’s draw, the singles final was won by Leanne Greep of the Tasman Tennis Club, beating Jacinta Morgan from Christchurch, 6-1, 6-2 in straight sets.
