Farmers, growers feeling the heat Farming and other food producing businesses across the Waimea are suffering, their owners forced into considering worst-case scenarios as hot, dry weather, exacerbated by drying winds, take its toll. While there is some hope on the horizon this weekend that Cyclone Oma will deliver much-needed rain, no one wants to pin all their hopes on the weather forecast. Appleby vegetable grower Mark O’Connor says, in his 20 years’ of growing he has never experienced a situation like the current one. “It’s pretty drastic, people are really struggling.” With their water allocation down to 35 per cent of what is normal, for the past three weeks growers have been forced into choosing what they water, decisions based on what could survive and what their returns might be. The lack of rain could not have come at a worse time, he says, as now is usually the busiest time for planting winter crops. For many, they are just not planting, as without water it’s a futile exercise. Plants are being thrown out. The situation extends right across the Waimea Plains, he says, but although it’s a tough time it’s important to keep some

Farmers, growers feeling the heat FROM PAGE 1 sort of perspective. “It’s not a great position we’re in but it is what it is and people shouldn’t stress to much about things they have no influence over.” Although that might be easier said than done, it’s the well-being of people that should come first, he says. “It’s important to talk to your neighbours,” he says. “Have a bit of a yak. “Or if you need it, reach out and get some help.” It is just as tough for farmers. Federated Farmers Nelson spokesman Martin O’Connor says a lot of farmers across the Waimea are destocking, adjusting the mouths they have to feed with the amount of feed they have. He says reliance on supple-

Martin says farmers need to make decisions early as to how they are going to deal with their situation and then stick with it. “It’s never going to be perfect

but the first decisions are often the best decisions.” He says farmers who leave things too long may find they can’t get rid of stock, as there will be no room left at the freezing works with everyone in the same boat.

The government says it recognises the pressure the rural sector in the area is under, declaring a medium scale adverse event for the Tasman district, which will unlock support for farmers and growers. Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor, who lives in the district, says the drought conditions, combined with the wildfire, have made it a particularly tough time for those trying to manage stock and grow food. Declaring the adverse event makes an extra $50,000 available to the rural support trust and primary industry groups to help speed up the recovery of farming and horticultural businesses. Damien says officials have been working with local trusts councils and industry bodies recently as the dry weather threatened to tip into drought.

WATCHING THE WEATHER While no one wants to bank on it, the WeatherWatch.co.nz is forecasting rain for the weekend.

The Nelson Wine and Food Festival may have been cancelled last weekend but that did not stop its headline entertainment act – the New Zealand Army Band – from playing in the area. Fire risk and overworked volunteers, many of who were evacuated from their homes last week, forced the festival’s

It says parts of the country will receive rain but the jury is out on the impact Cyclone Oma will have on the country this weekend and early next week.

“Due to the big uncertainty around Oma’s precise track, rainfall totals are not yet known. It may be windy and wet enough to prompt severe weather warnings in both islands, or it may push more offshore. But as WeatherWatch. co.nz said last week, expect changeable forecasts as we all try to fine tune the messy data and work out who has drizzle, showers, rain, heavy rain - and who may miss out.

Charity close to walker’s heart A young Richmond woman whose spine is supported by titanium rods and screws will next month spend about 12 days walking 180km around Stewart Island to raise money for Life Flight. Kate Dobbie’s trek, which begins on March 4, will take in the island’s north-western and southern circuits and, for the first few days, she will be joined by her mum Beryl, who will walk the Rakiura Track. Both women say they have good reason to be extremely grateful for the service Life Flight provides. In 2014, Kate had surgery in Christchurch for chiari malformation, which involved cutting a hole in her skull to relieve pressure on her brain. A day after being released from hospital and back home in Richmond, she developed complications and was admitted to intensive care at Nelson Hospital. From there Kate was flown by Life Flight air ambulance to Christchurch Hospital, where she spent four weeks recovering. Last year Beryl suffered a double brain aneurysm. Within hours Life Flight had transferred her to Wellington Hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery.

Kate Dobbie’s walking exploits have taken her through the Grand Canyon. Photo: Supplied.

After recuperating in Wellington for 10 days, the air ambulance transferred Beryl back to Nelson. Kate is no stranger to completing multi-day walks, having racked up more than 5000km on trails in New Zealand, Nepal, America and Australia. That’s included walking up to the Mount Everest base camp, the entire 1000km-long Bibbulmun

Track in Western Australia, and sections of the Arizona Trail in the United States and the Te Araroa trail in New Zealand. She wants to turn her walking into something positive, something that will help other people - raising money for a good cause which is where Life Flight comes in. “Life Flight has done a lot for our

family, and for many others,” she says. The organisation operates the Westpac rescue helicopter, along with air ambulance aircraft. On average, they fly a mission somewhere in New Zealand every six hours. What makes Kate’s walking efforts even more impressive is that following her surgery for chiari

FOOD OFFERING

malformation, she had more surgery for scoliosis, which involved straightening a curve in her spine. That meant having two rods and 14 screws inserted in her spine, but x-rays show the process has worked. Kate says walking helps her feel better and she is determined that the challenges scoliosis has put in front of her will not hold her back. That has not happened so far. After almost three years of having the two surgeries and the associated recoveries she came home after getting clearance from both surgeons and that afternoon decided to walk the Te Araroa trail, which stretches from Cape Reinga to Bluff. Six days later she was on a plane heading north. Usually Kate, who has done all her walks so far on her own, carries a tent, sleeping bag and mat, a cooker and all her food, although the tracks in Stewart Island have huts so she won’t need her tent. She will however, have to think carefully about taking everything she needs, and keeping her load as light as possible. To support Kate, Beryl and Life Flight, a givealittle page has been set up at givealittle.co.nz/stewartisland-walk-for-life-flight.

Honoured for 25 years of service Paul Sixtus has attended a few ceremonies to mark 25 years of service fighting fires, in fact he’s even organised a couple, but attending your own one is quite different, he says. The Richmond volunteer fireman received his gold star and honorary life membership at special dinner at Saxton Oval on Saturday that was attended by colleagues, friends and family. After he and wife Sandie arrived in a vintage fire engine, they

drills, was more than 95 per cent, which was a tremendous service record that showed great commitment. Paul’s first five years as a volunteer firefighter were spent in Mapua, before he moved across to Richmond. A fire he attended in his first couple of years still looms large in his memory. “It was a big fire that began somewhere up the back of Moutere and ended up coming out some-

walked between two lines of firefighters who formed an honour guard. He was given his award by past president of the United Fire Brigades Association, Barry Bridges, who also presented Sandie with a framed certificate that recognised and thanked her for supporting her husband over his 25 years of service. Barry told those present that Paul’s attendance at brigade musters, which involved training and

where around Tasman.” It was his daughter’s second birthday that day but after hearing the siren he left the orchard sometime around 11am. He didn’t get home until about 1pm the following day. That was one of the things that had changed over the years, he said. When he started out, once you got to a fire you were there until it was out. These days, under Fire and Emer-

gency New Zealand, firefighters get relieved. Paul paid tribute to the support of his family, which he says was essential. “Without the right family, you just wouldn’t do it. “A lot of volunteer jobs you know what you’re going to be doing,” he says. “Not this one though. You never know when the siren is going to go or what it’s going to bring.” See photos, page 10

State of emergency still in place The State of Civil Emergency put in place following the outbreak of the Pigeon Valley fires has been extended for at least another week. Tasman Mayor Richard Kempthorne says the situation still requires a greater response than could be provided without the support of agencies like Fire and Emergency New Zealand, the police and Civil Defence. He says there are still 250 people evacuated from their homes and another 3500 on standby to be evacuated. Fire crews have remained busy this week, dealing with flareups and working on hot spots and unsafe trees within the containment zone. Residents of Redwood, Teapot and Eves Valley were able to access their properties from 8 am until 2 pm on Tuesday. Civil Defence controller Roger Ball said the decision was made on the advice of Fire and Emergency and Police, taking into account today’s weather, the conditions on the fireground, and the ability to safely evacuate residents if the situation changed. Some forestry operations also resumed this week. Roger says this has been allowed under the Civil Defence exemptions and is subject to having strict fire control measures in place. Meanwhile Bill Reid, the pilot of a helicopter who crashed on Sunday fighting the fire is understood to be recovering in hospital from ‘minor to moderate’ injuries.

Critical water shortage looming

Water use restrictions have helped slow the falling level of the Waimea River but a significant amount of rain is desperately needed. Photo: Colin Williscroft. drought conditions and the need to conserve water now requires some big sacrifices to be made.” The falling of the Waimea River level has slowed but only because restrictions were introduced last month, he says. The new business and household restrictions apply to everyone connected to the reticulated water supply in Richmond, Hope, Brightwater, Wakefield, Ruby Bay, Mapua, Tapawera, and rural extensions such as Redwood Val-

ley. The rural schemes of Dovedale, Eighty-Eight Valley and Redwood Valley are also covered by the restrictions. “The 25 per cent cut for businesses connected to the reticulated supply is going to be extremely challenging for many,” Dennis says. However, business accounts for 50 per cent of urban water demand and that sector needs to make a significant contribution to the water-saving effort, he says.

RemarkaBULL

“For households, the only garden watering that is allowed is for fruit and vegetables, using a bucket or watering-can, and only on alternate days. Pop a bucket in the shower to collect water, make use of your grey water, and let cooking water cool so you can reuse it on the garden,” Dennis says. “Likewise, washing cars, windows and other outdoor surfaces is prohibited except for genuine health and safety reasons. Dampening property at risk from the

Pigeon Valley or other live fires is allowed.” Council enforcement officers will be out checking compliance with the restrictions and issuing warnings to anyone flouting the usage bans. Anyone who continues to ignore the restrictions may have a restrictor attached to their meter limiting their water supply. The council is also actively enforcing rural restrictions and will issue infringement fines to anyone breaching their consent limits, Dennis says. Tasman Mayor Richard Kempthorne reiterated the urgency of significant water use cuts by urban businesses, the rural sector and households. ”I know this decision will have serious economic consequences for growers and other industries. We are still to reach the stage of maximum water demand as crops are harvested and hard choices will have to be made about how best to use a diminishing supply of water.” Richard said it was unfortunate the Waimea Community Dam was not in place yet as it would have avoided this drought having such dire consequences. “The economic cost of this drought will be substantial.”

To reduce the risk of saltwater contamination of water supply bores serving Richmond, the Tasman District Council has used emergency powers to construct a bund across the lower Waimea River. The gravel bund will allow water to build up behind it, increasing the freshwater pressure to reduce the risk of incoming tides affecting salt levels in the bores. Tasman District Council acting engineering services manager Dwayne Fletcher says king tides are expected this week.

“The tides, combined with extremely low freshwater flows in the river, put our water supply bores at significant risk, so the bund is needed to protect the water supplies for Richmond, Mapua and Hope, as well as other aquifer water users.” The council has used emergency powers under the Resource Management Act to build the bund, which was completed on Friday, February 15. “We’re taking the lessons we learned in 2001, when two of our production bores had to be shut down permanently

Network Tasman takes a proactive approach to keeping trees away from our power lines by surveying all of our lines on a regular basis. We store the information collected in these surveys in a database. Our database records the full history of each surveyed site, including the condition of nearby trees.

12

If we identify trees that are growing too close to power lines, we let property owners know by sending them what is known as a cut and trim notice (CT Notice), as required by The Electricity (Hazard from Trees) Regulations. We issue more than 1500 CT Notices each year. Property owners are responsible for keeping their trees away from power lines. However, the regulations state that each tree is entitled to one free trim – we record whether a tree has had its free trim in our database.

When our vegetation team undertakes a survey they also look for trees with high-risk issues that could cause the tree to fall onto the lines, such as trees that are diseased, damaged, or have branches splitting out. All of these factors have the potential to damage the network and cause power outages. To help mitigate this risk, we negotiate a solution with the tree owner (this often involves trimming or felling the tree).

Last year, more than 3500 trees posing a risk to power lines were trimmed or felled by network certified arborists.

Surveying our lines and notifying tree owners in this way has dramatically reduced the number of power outages attributed to line damage caused by trees. With the cooperation of tree owners, our electricity supply has been more resilient and storm response costs have been lowered. This means everyone pays less for their electricity. If you’re a landowner you may have been contacted by one of our surveyors for permission to access your land and undertake a vegetation survey on your property. Our surveyors are always happy to answer your questions about clearances required, the safe cutting and disposal of trees, and issues with vegetation close to power lines.

It’s important for all of us to keep an eye on trees and vegetation and make sure that power lines are out of harm’s way.

Tasman businesses are being told they must cut their water use by 25 per cent, due to a looming critical water shortage. Drought conditions are being experienced across the Waimea Plains, Tasman District Council Dry Weather Taskforce convenor Dennis Bush-King says, adding that the situation will not improve unless the area receives a significant amount of rain to replenish dwindling river and groundwater levels. He says the latest restrictions, introduced on Monday, are essential to try to preserve the area’s remaining water until rain arrives. Businesses are not the only ones targeted by restrictions. Water permit holders in most Waimea zones have had their takes cut by 65 per cent, while there is also a ban on most outdoor water use by households and businesses. The exceptions to that are watering fruit and vegetables with a bucket on alternate days, firefighting, and use for genuine health and safety purposes. Dennis says the council is aware that extending the restrictions will have a significant impact on the community. “We have not taken this step lightly but we are in serious

To Vicki Wilson, there is no such thing as a problem or a naughty horse. Any undesirable behaviour is almost always a symptom of pain or fear. One of New Zealand’s most successful show jumping riders, Vicki has won the annual Road to the Horse title in the United States for the past two years, making her one of the most respected horsewomen in the world. However, she may be better known to the general public for her role in the television series Keeping up with the Kaimanawas, which she costarred in with her sisters Kelly and Amanda. Vicki is also one of the country’s top horse trainers and earlier this week Waimea riders had the opportunity to tap into her experience and knowledge at a one-day workshop she ran at Stonehurst Farm in Hope. About 35 people attended the introductory sore horse and bodywork workshop, which covered massage, stretches, farrier, saddle fit and basic horse bodywork. The workshop, which is a prerequisite to a horse re-

The national Model T Ford club rally is happening this weekend at the Richmond Speedway, from February 22-24. More than 45 Model T Fords from across the country will gather here for the rally, ranging in years from 1910 to 1927, including open tourers, closed cars, roadsters, speedsters and vans. Rally director Rob Thompson says over 120 members are coming to Nelson for the rally, from as far north as Warkworth and as far south as Mosgiel, and even one member travelling from Australia. The New Zealand Model T Ford Club has around 250 members, and the last time the rally was in the area was in Motueka, 16 years ago. “Most members drive their Model Ts all the way down, but some tow them,” says Rob. The Ford Model T, which was built from 1909-1927, was regarded as the first affordable automobile, opening travel to the middle class. In the 1920s more than half of the cars in the world were Model T

The “Long Run day” on Sunday begins at the vintage car club, with cars leaving at 9am for a 110115km run through Mahana, Lower Moutere and Ngatimoti, before stopping for lunch at the Motueka Aero Club. The afternoon run will take the cars through Tasman, Mapua and back to Richmond, where the rally winds up that evening with a dinner. Mayoral fund approaches $320,000 Applications for grants from the Mayoral Disaster Relief Fund for those affected by the Pigeon Valley fires will open one week after the Civil Defence State of Emergency is lifted, Tasman Mayor Richard Kempthorne says. Earlier this week the fund totalled about $318,000, including $170,000 from the government. Criteria is being finalised and the closing date will be released when the fund opens. The fund is

intending to provide oneoff relief grants to residents, property owners and business owners affected by the Pigeon Valley fire. The grants will make a contribution and are likely to cover damage or hardship caused by the fire that are not generally covered by insurance or emergency funding, or grants or allowances from other agencies or similar sources. “We hope the fund will help

alleviate some of the emotional and financial stress that inevitably follows disasters such as this,” Richard says. “I know there are many people out there who are experiencing hardship right now for various reasons and I urge them to speak to Central government agencies that support urgent emergency financial and welfare needs. “To make sure the money is

spread fairly we have to wait until we have a confirmed fund total, and a confirmed number of applications,” Richard says. All applications must be made online, and assistance will be provided to anyone who needs help with the application process. The Tasman District Council website will have more information on criteria and applications as soon as it is finalised.

critical water shortage

matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz

The Waimea area is rich in history. Waimea Weekly plans to run an intermittent series of stories looking at different events from the area’s past. If there is a piece of history you think is worth sharing, please let us know. If they look carefully, visitors to the Tophouse Historic Inn near St Arnaud can see gunshot holes in the eaves of the building’s veranda - evidence of a double murder/suicide that happened there almost 125 years ago. The inn is located on the Wairau pass, then called the Tophouse pass, which was the main land route for travellers and farmers between Nelson, Blenheim and Christchurch in the later half of the 19th century. In October 1894, it was the scene of a crime that shook the local community. The first inkling the outside world had that something was wrong at Tophouse was a small article that appeared in the Nelson Evening Mail on Friday, October 5. The report read “Mystery at Tophouse – man missing”. The article said that a tragedy must have

YES, IT IS CRITICAL. Shootings at Tophouse in the late 19th century shook the local community. Photo: Supplied occurred at Tophouse. At that stage, all that was known was that William Wallis, the lineman in charge of the telegraph station, was missing, and that shots had been fired. The owners of the local hotel, Nathaniel and Louisa Longley, were away in Blenheim, having left their children in the care of John Lane, a cousin of one of the Longelys, and Catherine Wylie, a governess. Louisa’s brother, Bill Bateman,

was a local baker who often helped out around the hotel. He was well known in the community, and it was rumoured that he had unsuccessfully tried to court Catherine. In the evening of October 4, Bill borrowed a gun from William and persuaded John to go hunting with him. It was the last thing John would do as the pair had not gone far before Bill shot John in the back to the head. Not long after Bill convinced Wil-

liam that they should go shooting and within minutes William too was dead, shot in the same way as John. Bill then walked back to the hotel but Catherine, sensing something was wrong, had fled with the children to the telegraph office where William’s wife was, having heard the shot that killed her husband. She had already made frantic pleas for help using the telegraph before Bill cut the lines.

By the next morning, Robert Kerr from the nearby Lake Station arrived. Later that day the police arrived from Nelson, and heard a shot from the hotel. They found Bill sitting on the veranda with the gun under his chin. He was already dead. He had removed his right boot and sock and used his big toe to pull the trigger. To this day the bullet holes remain in the wall outside the house.

Drought conditions mean many areas of Tasman District are now facing a critical water shortage which will worsen unless the area receives a large and sustained amount of rain to replenish dwindling river and groundwater levels. From Monday 18 February there is a ban on most outdoor water use for residents and businesses in Richmond, Hope, Brightwater, Mapua, Ruby Bay, Wakefield and their rural extensions. The restrictions also apply to the rural schemes including Eighty-Eight Valley, Redwood Valley, and Dovedale. From Monday 18 February the following restrictions are in force:

Total hosing ban

No watering grass or lawns

No filling or topping up pools

No outdoor surface washing except for genuine health and safety reasons

No vehicle washing except for genuine health and safety reasons (eg. windscreens, lights)

Only water fruit and vege gardens with a bucket on alternate nights

25% cut in use by businesses connected to the reticulated water network

Water use for firefighting or as directed by Civil Defence is always permitted

There are lots of other simple ways to conserve water and protect our declining water supplies – head to www.tasman.govt.nz/link/water-tips for ideas. Further restrictions are likely if there is no rain. Please check www.tasman.govt.nz regularly for updated information.

Delivery frustrations People on rural delivery in the St Arnaud/Korere areas are unfortunately still not receiving their Waimea Weekly, much to the frustration of staff at the newspaper. Rural delivery contractor Mark Gill recently said he no longer wanted to deliver the paper as he said it was not worth his while financially. He said he only took on the deliveries to about 220 rural boxholders as a favour to the previous agent who was responsible for mail deliveries in the area, and when that person moved on, he decided he had had enough. “It just wasn’t worth my time.” Even when the newspaper offered him more he still declined. Publisher Steve Page says that Waimea Weekly pays above the market rate for delivery so there shouldn’t be any problems. Later, Mark Gill also took issue with a story in the paper informing readers that they would have to pick up their newspaper from the St Arnaud

shop from now on, saying he was not given the opportunity to have his say and the story

Text message exchange between Waimea Weekly’s distributor and Mark Gill. painted him in a very poor light. He has also denied refusing to deliver the paper, yet Waimea

Weekly has copies of texts from him stating he wasn’t interested at any cost to deliver the paper and that it was just bulls#*t. He still has to drive past the letterboxes, paper or no paper. However, attempts were made to contact Mark at the time the article was written, with a message left on his answerphone asking him to call back. Mark claims he only discovered the message a couple of days ago, having missed it earlier. Waimea Weekly publisher Steve Page says he is unhappy that rural readers are being denied access to local news because one person cannot be bothered delivering the newspaper. “A lot of our readers are rightfully upset”. He says it amounts to a form of censorship and readers in the area deserve so much better. Newspaper staff are working on getting copies to the local St Arnaud store as soon as possible. New Zealand Post has been approached for comment.

Wayne Williams Another month has flown by, but so much has happened during that time. But first we must congratulate the people behind the fighting of the horrendous fires that many of us have experienced; it has been a long haul with many more hard hours ahead. Secondly, I wish to congratulate our Richmond Bowling Club on its very successful centenary celebrations. Well done to Barry and his team. The end of January saw the end of another financial year for the Club, with a very pleasing result achieved; a $359k surplus, some 34% up on last year. This is a result of increased membership numbers, but also the more frequent use of the facilities by our members, so keep it up everyone. This in turn allows us to continue to upgrade our facilities: the squash club have just had a total upgrade of court lighting, we have made a start on the upgrade of hall lighting, the huge job of campground electrical upgrade has just been completed and we have many more projects for the coming year. We have had some retirements from long serving grounds people – Brian, Nellie, and Bill have hung up their boots. I want to thank them for the great job they have done over many years; enjoy however you are spending your time from here on in. Cheers until next time.

Although most of the firefighters from outside the area who helped battle the blaze that threatened many Waimea homes and properties have now gone back to where they came from, the Brightwater and Appleby crews have not stopped working, having been at the forefront of effort from the beginning. were among the first on the scene. Since then roughly 20 Brightwater volunteers, along with past members who came back to help, have been focused on doing everything they can to keep the fire in check. Training co-ordinator Lee Beloe says the skills of those former members were still valuable. “You can practice all you want but there’s nothing like the real thing,” he says, adding that once learnt, practical rural firefighting skills are not forgotten. He says there was a real sense of ownership of the fire among the crews from Brightwater and Appleby. “It was like it was our fire and you wanted to see it through from start to finish. It means a lot if you can see it from outside your own station.” That ownership did not take away from the gratitude they had for help received from other fire brigades who came in to lend a hand. “We met some bloody cool people from all around the country. They were really good. But it’s been us and Appleby who’ve been there from the start.” Fellow Brightwater firefighter Mark Donaldson says the local crews are now working on mopping up efforts, which was relentless, dirty work. The difficulty of that part of the job was not helped by hot and windy conditions, which left local firefighters not only physically drained, but caked in dust and dirt. However, they were proud of what they had achieved, and the knowledge and skill they brought with them. Some worked in forests in the area affected by the fire, so knew the terrain and roads available, while others had their own special part to play. One of those was Brightwater’s Bruce Waddell, who played a crucial role helping to run the air operation, co-ordinating helicopters and fixedwing aircraft that were used to keep the fire in check.

Adam sets sights on South Island champs Up-and-coming Richmond athlete Adam Stack is looking forward to the South Island Secondary Schools Championships being at his home track – Saxton Oval – next month. Adam, who races in the under-16 category, had a successful Mahar Cup meeting on Saturday, winning his age group in the high jump, shot put and 400m, and coming a close second in the 200m. That comes on the back of a strong performance at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships in December, where he claimed gold in the shot put, silver in the high jump and long jump, and bronze in the 300 hurdles. Given the variety of track and field events Adam competes in, it is no surprise that he hopes to compete in the decathlon in the future. “It’s definitely a goal of mine,” he says of the decathlon.

Competing across a range of events is challenging but enjoyable, Adam says. “It’s difficult because running, jumping and throwing events all have different body builds.” That means it can be tough trying to balance the different types of training required, Adam says, but he thrives on the competition the different events bring. Adam paid tribute to the advice he receives from his coaches, including running coach Dennis Kale, his mum Karryn, who coaches him in field events, and the competition between his fellow members of the “Speed Freaks” training group. He says Nelson athletes Bailey Cotton and Lucy Sheat, who are part of his training squad, are two people who inspire him, “always pushing us to do our best”. Adam trains up to five times a week, spending three session focused on sprinting, one on throwing and another on jump-

ing. He also spends time working on his strength and flexibility. While he would like to represent New Zealand one day, at this point he is keeping his goals within reach, aiming to improve his personal best times, throws and jumps as much as he can. For the record, Nelson easily retained the 82nd Mahar Cup, beating teams from Marlborough and the West Coast. Nelson started with 54 athletes, compared to only 10 for Marlborough and seven for West Coast. Nelson won 35 events and scored points in almost all of the 55 events, amassing 302 points. Marlborough finished second with 81 points and West Coast third with 56. Camryn Smart led the Nelson women’s team, winning the 200m and 400m and running a leg on the 4 x 100m relay. Bailey Cotton duplicated that feat with the Nelson men’s side.

Webb triples up again Jody Scott

Speedway Reporter editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Speedway’s 2018 competitor of the year, Jeremy Webb, has again claimed a clean sweep of titles at the weekend. Jeremy won the South Island title in December, the New Zealand title in mid-February and, a week later, the GP trophy is also now back in the cabinet after another victory at Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway. The former Waimea College student continues to dominate the T.Q class. Webb was the favourite to grab the triple crown of titles, with his performances over the past few seasons making him almost untouchable in any championship he turns up to. The Ryan Stone Memorial and CTRA NZ titles are two more trophies stacked away in the cabinet this season. The only drawback was cooking the Midget engine early in his

Northern campaign and using a borrowed car to finish the series and NZ titles. Easter here in Nelson and King of the Coast titles are still on the radar for the remainder of the season as he starts to plan next season’s agenda. He has already broken the record of South Island titles with seven, double figures are not out of reach on current form. Keightley Teece was the sole Nelson competitor at the NZ Stock car championships held at Baypark in Tauranga. The three-time South Island champion managed to get through qualifying on a challenging track against 38 drivers in his group, just the top six went through. Teece had a brilliant start to both his championship heats to sit second going into the last race. He was a target early on before slamming one of the blocking cars into the wall halfway through the race, leaving his car broken and parked on the infield. It was a brutal final race with just 16 out of 36 cars finishing.

Nelson wins Hawke Cup after 22 years Peter Grigg

Chris Downey 06/07

The Nelson Pine Griffins have created their own slice of history after winning the Hawke Cup from Southland at Queens Park in Invercargill on Sunday. The 36-run victory means that the cup returns to Nelson for the first time since 1997, a 22-year wait. Southland resumed the three-day match on Sunday at 108/3 in pursuit of Nelson’s 297. A brace of early wickets by left arm spinner Felix Murray ensured that the challengers got on the front foot. At lunch, Southland had added 113 for the sixth wicket with the score at 232/5. Southland were probably odds on to sneak home at this stage. The wheels well and truly fell off immediately after lunch as Sam Baxendine took two wickets in quick succession. With Murray providing the ideal foil at the other end, Baxendine was too good for the tail as he polished off the final pair to complete the formalities and finish with a four-wicket haul. The Griffin’s innings was built on the back of a second wicket partnership of 134 between skipper Greg Hay and resilient opener

Thomas Zohrab. Zohrab went on to complete what proved to be a match-defining 122. Nelson coach Ryan Edwards was understandably jubilant with the result. “This is very cool, and it is a special group of lads who have played with real pride. They deserve everything they have achieved through working hard and sticking together.” He was rapt with the way the team fought, especially the patience they displayed during the 100-run partnership. “They stuck to the game plans and consistently stayed in the fight. We knew that it was only one ball away.” Nelson will have their first defence in a couple of weeks but for now Edwards and his boys will enjoy the moment. “It’s our time.”

MAD BUTCHER

Endurance swimming records fall Peter Gibbs The record book was rewritten in race four of the Clements Endurance Swim Series - the 3.8km Ironman Challenge that was raced at Tahuna Beach on Sunday. The early morning high tide helped, with a fine, calm day for the duration of the race. Three swimmers stood up together in the shallows and it was only the final sprint to the beach that separated them, Alec Swan crossing the line in 42 minutes 6 seconds, ahead of Fergus Drummond (42.07) and Bendi Kepess (42.08), who agonisingly had the victory in his sights before he tripped in the shallow water. Luke Kelly strolled ashore in 42min 14sec, not knowing that his 2014 record of 45min 23sec had been shattered - eventually by seven men. Close behind was national secondary schools open water champion Sierra Thomas,

Nelson Pine Griffins 297 (Thomas Zohrab 122, Greg Hay 72, Nic Clark 21, Jack Mockford 4/24, Jason Domigan 4/73) Southland 261 (James Ng 87, Amarpreet Singh 78, Ryan Duffy 25, Sam Baxendine 4/46, Felix Murray 3/57, Ben Stark 2/25) Nelson won by 36 runs on the first innings

who took the women’s title in 42min 43sec from Abbey Smale (42.54), both destroying Lisa Birkett’s 2013 record of 47min 21sec by nearly five minutes. Between the two women, Oxford Bayley (42.44) also broke Kelly’s record, as did Ben Marshall (43.48) and Terry Bone (44.15). Both Kelly and Thomas have won national events in the Banana Boat series this season, with Thomas leading the women’s points table. The question now is, how dominant can the Nelson swimmers be in race five of the national series - The Interislander Big Tahuna on Saturday March 2? With Sunday’s top four, and the addition of triathlete Hayden Squance, there’s a chance of a clean sweep of the top five men’s places. Thomas has been regal in the national series, both for open women and in the national

schools competition, but Smale leads her in the shorter Port Nelson series. Can the pair take out the first two places in the Big Tahuna? Added to that, there’s a slew of Nelson and Tasman swimmers capable of winning age group titles at the Big Tahuna. In addition to the overall local favourites, who will dominate their younger age groups, older swimmers also have good chances for gold. These include Derek Eaton (M75-79), Stuart Hebberd (M70-74), Ben Van Dyke (M65-69), Steve Clements (M60-64), Janis Crampton (F60-64), Hamish Neill (M5559), Andrew Martin (M5559), Christina Harris (F55-59), Terry Bone (M45-49) and Ben Marshall (M30-34). In Sunday’s short race, the 1300m swim from the Richardson Street steps to the beach, Wayne Leighton came in first in 23min 20sec, ahead of Eileen Searle (25.09).

Waimea Intermediate’s girl’s cricket teams have two brand new helmets for its players to wear while batting, thanks to the generosity of Waimea Soroptimists. Girls’ cricket has struggled to get the sort of sponsorship and funding other sporting codes enjoy and the Soroptimists wanted to give the players encouragement, while helping to keep them safe while

playing. Girls cricket coach Jon Linyard says it is nice to have the support of community groups like the Waimea Soroptimists. Good quality equipment like the helmets would last 10 to 15 years, he says, so they will be able to be used by girls in the future. This year there are two girls cricket teams at the intermediate, in-

Nelson Matters

Our community rightly takes great pride in the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT). It has for 115 years provided the skills and qualifications for Nelson to succeed. I am very worried about the Government’s announcement last week to force NMIT into a mega merger with all 16 Polytechnics around the country. This radical plan takes control away from NMIT’s Council made up of Nelson industry, community and student representatives. It will instead be run by Wellington bureaucrats. It will be less independent, less responsible and less innovative. Centralisation will over time mean fewer training programmes and

Big” polytechnic plan on the basis that some are in financial trouble. The irony is that the institution in the most difficulty is the biggest – Auckland’s UNITEC. It is also unfair that the Government is nationalising NMIT when the original Nelson Technical School land in Hardy Street was provided by the Nelson City Council and funded by ratepayers. This state takeover of NMIT is driven by Labour’s philosophy that big Government agencies, directly controlled by Minister’s, know best. My experience as Minister of Education was that the closer decisions were made to students, the better they worked for students. I got far better

This centralisation is the opposite of the Coalition Agreement with NZ First promising to shift decision making out to the regions. National is keen to engage with Nelson on the fate of NMIT, and the similar changes proposed for schools that centralise decision making. We see potential for positive reform, like improving the funding model for schools and polytechnics, but change must be for the better. I have invited our Education spokespeople, Hon Nikki Kaye and Dr Shane Reti to a public meeting next Monday at 4.30pm at my Electorate office. Please join us. The future of education is the future of Nelson. Advt.

advice on education policy from my local Nelson principals than from Ministry officials. NMIT Chief Executive Liam Sloane knows his 340 staff, our community, our businesses and is in constant contact with students. The new Chief Executive calling the shots from Wellington in the nationwide merged institute will have 15,000 staff and will know very little about Nelson’s training needs or students. Labour has no mandate for gutting regional polytechnics. It was never part of their Education Policy. They misled institutions like NMIT last year by saying any changes being considered in this process would only affect struggling Polytechnics.
