Three years for starting fires Matt McCrorie Reporter
matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz
A local man who deliberately started two fires during the Pigeon Valley Forest fires last year has been sent to prison for three years and four months. Benjamin Durrant, along with Abigail Page, was charged with arson and attempted arson in 2019. After being found guilty on both charges at the Wellington High Court in March, the pair were sentenced in the Nelson High Court. Durrant was sentenced to prison, while Page was discharged without conviction. A hot, bone-dry summer meant that fire risk was high at the beginning of 2019. All it took was a small spark from farming equipment on February 5 to start one of the largest forest fires in New Zealand’s history. The first fire deliberately lit by the pair, on February 27 on the Moutere Highway, meant that firefighters had to divert precious time and resources away from the main blaze to stop another fire from getting out of control. The Moutere fire saw locals evacuated from their homes, and damage to both private and commercial property, including land owned by Tasman Pine. The second fire, set on Pigeon Valley Road on March 6, was put out quickly. Benjamin Durrant and Abigail Page were arrested soon after. Local forestry workers who thought that the

Air NZ closes engineering hub: 89 jobs lost Air New Zealand has confirmed that it will move its regional aircraft hub from Nelson to Christchurch, meaning a loss of 89 jobs. The airline said that it had let staff know that the turboprop heavy maintenance work will start moving to Christchurch from mid to late 2020, with the transition taking between six and nine months. A spokesperson said that as a result of this, 89 roles in Nelson will be disestablished. Of these, 15 Q300 specialists are able to be redeployed to Christchurch. “Demand for aircraft maintenance contract work has deteriorated, including in Nelson. Following consultation and a review of alternative feedback and options, there were considerations to increase maintenance demand in Nelson. However, due to runway constraints (being too short to allow Air New Zealand A320

of its main passenger and cargo ports. Nelson MP Nick Smith said he was gutted at the confirmation that Air New Zealand will close its heavy aviation maintenances workshop in Nelson.
“Nelson should not be the fall guy for Air NZ’s post Covid-19 problems. This heavy engineering workshop is efficient and well located for Air New Zealand’s regional fleet and should be retained for when aviation recovers.

Air New Zealand has not given alternative plans for retaining the specialist turbo prop base here in Nelson proper consideration. “I am disappointed at the Government’s silence on the loss of this industry to Nelson and the 100 jobs. The Government cannot say its top priority is job retention but then ignore the pleas for its $900m of support to Air NZ to be tagged to the retention of jobs and services to the regions.” A petition of over 16,000 signatures was presented to Parliament on Wednesday. “I am not giving up the fight for this important Nelson industry that has taken two decades to build. It is inevitable there will be some job losses with the downturn in aviation but I am determined that we leave the door open for this Nelson industry to recover in the longer term.”

Heightened traffic activity under Alert Level 2 means that the region has already seen a series of accidents on the road in the last week. A motorcyclist was airlifted to Nelson Hospital on Saturday, after a single vehicle accident on the Hope Saddle. A police spokesperson said that police received report of a singlevehicle crash around 1.50pm on the Kohatu-Kawatiri Highway near Hope Saddle, and that a motorcycle had gone over a roadside barrier. The person involved sustained moderate injuries and was taken to Nelson Hospital at around 3pm, with the road reopening shortly after. Nelson Hospital confirmed that the patient sustained moderate injuries and is currently in a stable condition. At 2pm on Friday, a truck and a car were involved in an accident on Whakatu Drive at the Richmond roundabout, which left the road closed for some time. Police arrived at 2:20pm but said
there were no serious injuries. A lane of SH6 between Nelson and Richmond was blocked on Wednesday last week after a vehicle crashed through the centre barrier, near Richmond. Police attended the scene of the two-vehicle crash at around 9:30am, but reported that there were no serious injuries. Tasman Road Policing Manager Senior Sergeant Grant Andrews says that as more get back on the road, people need to slow down and drive to the conditions. “This is particularly relevant with schools back this week,” he says. Grant says that Alert Level 2 means that there will be more opportunities to socialise away from home. “Have a plan to get yourself home safely before you go out or drive. Ensure your friends and family have the same to get home safely if they’re at your home.” “We talk about deaths on our roads, but serious injury from crashes also has a lifetime effect on families. Don’t become that person who is injured or injures anyone else. Respect the other road users including cyclists and pedestrians.” “We have come through level 4 and level 3 relatively crash-free, and we want that to remain.”

Recycling services resume in Tasman While kerbside recycling and rubbish collections have continued throughout Covid-19 restrictions, the council has announced that recycling will no longer be sent to lnadfill. All recycling collected from Monday 18 May will be sorted and processed. During Alert Levels 4 and 3, recycling was unable to be sorted due to the lack of fully-automated recycling facilities.
Glass was recycled as it was sent to an automated facility in Auckland. This will continue as usual. The council is reminding residents to ensure recycling is clean, to stop the risk of contamination. Bins with unclean recycling may not be collected. The plant that sorts mixed recycling (paper, cardboard, plastics and cans) have also re-opened to the public for drop-offs, as of Saturday, May 16.

Economic challenges ahead for region A report released recently from Project Kōkiri, the joint Covid-19 response collaboration between Nelson and Tasman, paints a picture of the economic impacts on the region. “Some of these forecasts make for sobering reading,” says Mark Rawson, Chief Executive of the Nelson Regional Development Agency. Mark says that it’s important to have an honest conversation about the ‘significant’ economic fallout that the Nelson and Tasman regions will face. “Our region has some significant competitive advantages that will
help us navigate these changing times, but we need to be realistic about the storm we are facing and put ourselves in a position to respond accordingly.” The report is based on early forecasts, and is based on a range of assumptions of likely outcomes for different sectors of the local economy over the year to March 2021. The report estimates that the Nelson Tasman economy will decrease by 7.9 per cent, with one in ten jobs predicted to be lost, bringing unemployment in the region to 8.6 per cent. The report predicts that the high-
est number of job losses will come from low-skilled jobs (46 per cent.) It is predicted that earnings in the region will decline by $280 million. Among the hardest hit industries in the region are transport, retail, and accommodation, but the region’s strong primary production and manufacturing sectors will improve the region’s resilience. The report also predicts that the Nelson-Tasman construction industry will decline sharply in the short term but will provide support for economic recovery from 2023.
Tasman mayor Tim King says that while there will be a significant impact to the regional economy, the report highlights the fact that there are a lot of advantages in the Nelson-Tasman region that puts it in a good place to recover from. “It’s anticipated that there will be a big impact on tourism but a lesser impact on other industries, and the diverse economy of our region means we’re in a much stronger position,” he says. Tim says that we need to encourage each other and work together to begin the long recovery process.
“In order to make the most of those positives, everyone needs to work together and recovering will require a collective approach and combined effort from the community, central and local government, and the private sector.” Tim says that while the region will have to work differently going forward, this will bring positive opportunities. “Supporting local business and local industry will be important. Hopefully we can show leadership at a regional level that will support a national recovery across New Zealand”.
Hairdressers keep busy post-lockdown Jacqui Rawson Reporter

Adrian Bradley wasn’t sure what would greet him the first day after level 3 restrictions were lifted, although the local barber imagined he’d have some regular customers keen to have their locks tidied up after 7 weeks of neglect. His barbershop on Queen Street had its first customer arrive at 5 am, which ensured he was first up for a turn under the shears. Adrian arrived at 6.30 am, by which time 31 more customers were waiting for their spruceups. Adrian works alone and runs a no-appointment system,
so had concerns about any queuing. “People have been really good,” said Adrian. “Everyone’s been patient and happy to follow the safety procedures.” Customers are being asked to add their contact details to the Contact Tracing Register, to do their waiting in seats spaced two metres apart as well as hand sanitizing as per government requirements. For those waiting in line, it was a chance to chat with people they’d never met before. It was also a chance to learn what the lockdown has meant for other people from all parts of the community.
“Everyone’s still got a story to tell,” said Adrian “even though we’ve been locked down for seven weeks”. There are a few minor changes post-lockdown for barbershops but there’s one way they haven’t changed. They’re still the go-to place for information, to find out what’s going on; second only to the office water cooler. Adrian says that he’s happy to be open again, creating an income to cover the overheads that have continued to mount up throughout lockdown. He did point out that he could expect to be as busy again in 6 weeks when these customers are all due for their next haircut.

Nelson -Tasman tops benefit payments Sara Hollyman Reporter
sara@nelsonweekly.co.nz sara@nelsonweekly.co.nz
The Top of the South has seen requests for benefit payments skyrocket over the Covid-19 lockdown period with an almost 500 percent increase on the same time last year. The jump in “Job Seeker – Work Ready” grants represents the biggest of its kind in the country. This time last year only 267 people claimed assistance, however, during the lockdown period 1586 claimed it – an increase of 496 percent.
The new report from the Ministry of Social Development shows that Top of the South workers, who have never had to claim any assistance before, made up the highest proportion of those receiving a benefit during lockdown. These were more likely to be first time beneficiaries, higher earners, recently returned from overseas, and Pakeha. “These changes may reflect that this downturn is impacting a broader group of people than usual, with a greater cross section of society impacted,” the report reads. “Nelson and Southern regions
have historically had strong labour markets with relatively low benefit numbers. These are also regions that have significant tourism sectors,” the report says. Reasons recorded for the grants was especially pronounced for those returning to New Zealand but job loss was the main reason recorded in 45 per cent of grants. The payment supports those who are currently unemployed but seeking work or working part time but looking for more work. More than 184,000 New Zealanders received the main unemployment benefit payment; jobseeker support, in April. Ministry of Social Development
figures show almost 6 per cent per cent of the Top of the South’s working population; those aged between 18 and 64, received a jobseeker support payment in April, an increase of 33.5 per cent compared to February. Labour candidate for Nelson Rachel Boyack says the economic situation is going to be tough globally for many months. “The feedback I’ve had to date is that tourism and hospitality have been most affected. I am confident that the Nelson economy can survive this. We have talented people who can respond to difficulties and challenges in innovative ways.”
The Government is predicting unemployment to rise to 8.3 per cent by September. “We are extremely fortunate to have a diversified economy and I know that some of our sectors will continue to thrive, like agriculture, horticulture and seafood. “I know that the Ministry of Social Development are working hard to support affected workers to transfer to other jobs within those sectors that are still operating at full capacity. “ Rachel says that she encourages Nelson locals to shop and buy local, so that we can begin to support our economy to recover and rebuild.

Gyms getting locals moving again Matt McCrorie Limited numbers, cleaning equipment everywhere, and strict physical distancing measures are just a few of the things that gyms like CLM in Richmond have implemented to get people moving again. Members will now need to move clockwise around the gym. Even if they are wanting to switch to the machine behind them, they’ll need to put in an extra lap first. “This has increased our ability to physically distance people,” says facilities manager Vaughn Hope. Over half the equipment is out of bounds and covered in yellow tape,
to manage physical distancing. While foot traffic has been steady since they reopened, Vaugh says numbers will increase. “We’ve built up the systems to deal with that.” Group fitness classes will be managed by a booking system to ensure that numbers are limited. Another feature of the gym that might feel a little different is a staff member following users around, thoroughly cleaning equipment behind them. “We’ve been working really hard to ensure that people feel safe. We really want to be the gold standard,” says Vaughn.

Judge calls speeding motorcyclist ‘menace’ Sara Hollyman Reporter
sara@nelsonweekly.co.nz sara@nelsonweekly.co.nz
A man who “panicked” after speeding through a Richmond intersection on a motorcycle that he was not licenced to ride has been disqualified from driving. Richard James Shrubsall, 24, on Monday pleaded guilty to a charge of driving in a dangerous manner in the Nelson District Court. The police summary of facts says that shortly before 1pm on Friday April 17, a police car that was waiting at the traffic lights on Queen St saw the rider of a Yamaha motorcycle speed through the intersection of SH6 and Queen St. The police car activated its lights and the motorcycle accelerated heavily along Gladstone Rd to an estimated speed of 120kmh. The speed limit was 50kmh. Police quickly made the decision not to pursue the rider due to the risk posed
to both Shrubsall and other road users. Shrubsall was then seen by another police car on Gladstone Rd overtaking cars in an unsafe manner by using the flush median, while he was still travelling at an estimated speed of 120kmh. Police did not engage in pursuit but, a few minutes later, Shrubsall was seen pulling out of a nearby address and was stopped by Police. Lawyer Kelly Hennessey says that Shrubsall simply “panicked” as he had been speeding and did not hold a motorcycle licence. However, Judge Russell told Shrubsall he should be “ashamed” of himself and convicted him on the charge. “Your driving behaviour on this day is entirely unacceptable,” he said. “You were a menace not only to yourself but everyone else on the road.” Shrubsall was fined $850, plus court costs of $130 and he has been disqualified from driving for eight months.

Increased engagement in schools due to online learning Jacqui Rawson Reporter
jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz
If anyone ever thought of homeschooling and digital learning, it was as a concept far in the future. It became a sudden reality for teachers and students with the onset of the level 4 lockdown. Deane Taylor, a teacher from Waimea Intermediate, says that there was no time to work through what teachers were going to do. “There was an initial bit of confusion for us and the students.” Where the student’s reaction might have been one of delight at having this sudden escape from school handed to them, Deane says that the first response for teachers was concern for the well-being of their students, then, how they were going to teach. There are loads of teaching aids in the form of digital applications that could be used to fill the void created by the loss of the classroom. Tools like video conferencing meant that teachers and students could speak to and have visibility of each other. Google Classroom is where lessons were accessed and where students got to share what they’d been up to during lockdown.
Deane Taylor, Waimea Intermediate Teacher says that while there was initial confusion when the country went into lockdown, there were some benefits to the new style of learning. Photo: Jacqui Rawson. “It took a few weeks to get up to speed. We tried different options to work out what worked best,” Deane says. Beyond continuing with the day to day learning as per the national curriculum, the lockdown has opened other huge learning opportunities. Students and teachers alike had little or no knowledge of these tools before Covid-19. Now, pretty much all are proficient.
Funny, interesting, outrageous? Let us know. Phone us on 544 9037
Deane says that his students reacted to the different forms of learning in different ways. Some students were interactive straight away and keen to get on board, while others took longer to adapt to the changes. Deane says that the whole concept of online learning encouraged more interaction and a particularly positive outcome was that normally shy students became bolder to interact. A challenge for teachers was to keep the students’ interest after the initial excitement. Teachers created new presentations each week for students and generated things like online competitions to pique engagement again, while covering the set subjects of reading, writing and math within these themes. The lockdown has also helped bridge any gaps that might have existed within the home-school partnership. “It [lockdown] provided the chance to be in contact with everyone in the family while the whole family were at home,” said Deane. “It is an opportunity teachers don’t usually get”. It’s been a big fast-paced learning curve for all involved, but has provided new ideas and resources, some of which may be utilised moving forward.

Dear Readers, Life is full of change and no more so than during the previous six weeks. We have all had time to think and reflect and many of us will be introducing new idea’s into our life style and business structures. I have a very genuine buyer who is looking for this type of property and have no urgent time frames. If you are thinking of selling and would like to take advantage of this opportunity, then please give me a call.
11 Mount Heslington Road, Brightwater NEW LISTING
This is a very different and exciting opportunity. Not only do you get a five bedroom farm-style home, you also get a bio grow certified organic lavender and saffron business that proudly holds many national awards. You will find this business marketed on our Bayleys website. I welcome your call and I can provide you with all of the details.
The Real Estate market as I see it Everyone is talking about how Covid-19 will affect property values. I believe that it is much too soon to be able to knowledgeably make an informed comment. Every region is different and for a variety of reasons. I cannot go along with generic comments from big city economists. I was busy during our level four lockdown and negotiated several large conditional sales during that period. It was not straight forward and
conditional time frames are based on us entering level two so that buyers could freely complete their due diligence. I am sharing this with you because the level of buyer enquiry during lockdown was strong and that gives me confidence that we will see very little change within our region. Time will tell. I will keep you informed as information and sales statistics become available.

Local olive oil is world class Jacqui Rawson Reporter
“Thank you for

When you think of award-winning olive oil you might think of it starting its life in a country somewhere near the Mediterranean Sea. Kakariki Olive Oil is produced much closer to home and is turning heads on the international stage. “We were one of seven New Zealand award winners which means a huge amount for New Zealand olives and where we sit in the world market,” said Brenda. Brenda, her husband Ray and their two children are the family unit producing this award-winning oil on their olive grove right here in Tasman, in the Redwood Valley. The 3200 trees on their property are busy producing around 10,000 litres of topnotch Extra Virgin olive oil each year. And the oil is top notch enough that their Mediterranean blend won Best in Class at the New Zealand Olive Oil Awards. But perhaps even more impressive is they now appear in the official index of the world’s best olive oils thanks to the gold medal they won at this year’s New York International Olive Oil Competition. An amazing achievement for what is a relatively small in-

Kakariki Olives is also one of five groves that are part of a national research project which is looking into improving the health of the trees and ways to maximize production. “Generally, crops are bi-annual but due to the research project we’re now having success crops on an annual basis,” Ray says. Brenda added, “Trees that were providing 5kg crops are
now producing 25kg, which means the New Zealand market is growing from something that previously was like a hobby type market.” They grow their own fruit and have their own press on site. Brenda and Ray have also recently bought a harvester. Great results for the couple who bought the grove only two years ago. They have a few ideas for the future development of their business, but for the moment they are happy to let time help them decide which ideas they will progress with.

Local environmental consultant Karen Driver says that Covid-19 has revealed that our local recycling systems are broken. Councils around the country, including the Tasman District Council, had to suspend recycling services throughout Alert Levels 3 and 4. While kerbside collection was consistent, most recyclables, excluding glass, were sent to landfill because of the lack of fully-automated sorting facilities. Karen says she understands the safety concerns around closing facilities, but thinks it is time for a more robust system that fosters greater collaboration between councils and the community. “I think our systems are broken. The fact that we couldn’t process recycling because of Covid-19 shows that. We need a system that is more resilient. We live in a country that is always going to have emergencies of some kind. “We can’t, at every crisis, say, ‘oh, we can’t handle that, we’ll dump it into a big hole.’ It’s not practical at all.” She says with most of our recycling going into the ground over the last seven weeks, now is as good a time as any to rethink how we handle waste. “It’s a good opportunity for

Photo: Matt McCrorie. people, those who have continued to put stuff in recycling but know that it was going to go to landfill, hopefully that gives people a feel for how much is being generated.” Karen says the recycling is only better by a degree than landfill anyway. “There is far too much focus on recycling, nationally. Ultimately there needs to be a re-focus on avoiding and reducing waste, away from recycling.” Karen explains that the problem with recycling is that it slowly works its way out of the system. Type 1, 2 and 5 plastics are
Nelson Matters
Big spending and even bigger borrowing is the Government’s prescription in Budget 2020 to the economic challenges of Covid-19. My concern is the scale of debt proposed, the questionable quality of spending and the lack of a plan to rebuild the economy and jobs. The Government is budgeting on deficits of nearly $30 billion per year or $16,000 per household for the next three years. The borrowing continues for eight years until 2028 and totals $140 billion. That is $80,000 per household. Little of the spending is capital or building new assets. It has the Government total nett worth de-
cline from $143 billion to just $33 billion. It has Government running up debt to 90% of the value of all our public assets like roads, schools, hospitals etc. I doubt many Nelson families would feel comfortable pushing their mortgage up to 90% of the value of their home but that is what the Government is effectively proposing. I find this level of debt scary and too large. It leaves no room for managing any other shock for the next decade. Debt is easy to rack up and hard to pay off. I am the only remaining MP from the early 1990s when we climbed out of a similar sized mountain of debt. It
was a painful period that no New Zealander should want to repeat. The Government should run deficits to maintain our core public services and benefits through these difficult times just as National did through the Christchurch earthquakes. My problem is with the huge slush funds that look more like electioneering than wise spending. The $100 million for racing and gambling is an indulgence for Winston Peters. So too is the extra $500 million funding for the Provincial Growth Fund. There is so much cash pouring out of the Beehive that wasteful spending is inevitable. The thinking
the highest quality. The other plastics are low grade and are generally sent offshore for processing into products that are inferior to the original product - called downcycling. “Type 1 plastics you can recycle again into new milk bottles and meat trays, it’s good quality plastic. But as you get to the lower grade plastics, they are usually downcycling with each use, they lose their value and structure. “It works its way out of the system.” A lot of the push for reducing waste is on consumers, and they need to be care-
ful with what they buy, but Karen says that the system needs to change. “The system should be changed rather than just putting an emphasis on customers. Bad packaging shouldn’t be allowed to happen.” Karen also thinks that there should be more of a focus on dealing with our recycling in New Zealand rather than shipping it offshore. “We need quality systems where we can generate jobs locally, and we can do that if we have more of a community-based recovery system.” She says in Auckland they’ve invested in community recycling areas where they support local groups to get a site, have the capacity and training to set up a facility that will take back recycling and sort things. That way you keep the integrity of the recyclables really high – you get quality recycling. Karen says that there is an ever-growing passion in the community for change around the way we handle waste. “I’m keen to see greater collaboration between councils and the community to support a focus on avoiding and reducing our waste,” she says. “Councils can’t do it all and there are many within our community who already drive waste avoidance and reduction and need support, and many others who are keen to be involved.”

is that spending is the answer to every problem and the bigger the problem, the more that should be spent. My greatest disappointment is the lack of a plan for jobs in the Budget. The announcement of the closure of Nelson’s regional facility for turbo prop aircraft occurred while Parliament debated the budget. Not one Government MP or Minister from Labour, NZ First or the Greens spoke in its support. The Government owns a 52% majority shareholding in Air NZ and is providing $900 million in financial support. Aviation will recover and this Nelson base should have been supported for
the long term. The latest economic reports shows 5,000 Nelsonians losing their jobs with closures of this sort. The Budget should have been focused on how to protect as many of these jobs as possible. Nelson needed more from this Budget that what economic commentators have called borrow and hope. National is best able to rebuild the economy. We have the strong track record of having done so in the 1990s and 2010s. The urgent focus of my work is developing an alternate economic plan focused on jobs and working with the private sector to rebuild Nelson and New Zealand’s economy. Advt.

It has been 20 years since Simon and Kylie Collett first set up Jennian Homes Nelson Bays, so to mark this amazing milestone, a special function was held in February this year at the Nelson Yacht Club. “Key subcontractors who have been with us for 20 years, along with our staff members, key clients, and various local identities, were invited to join us for an evening of celebration,” says General Manager, Mark Smale. Born and raised in Nelson, after leaving Waimea College, Simon Collett attended Nelson Polytechnic, where he completed a carpentry course, then soon found employment as an apprentice builder with a local company. Upon completion of his apprenticeship, Simon founded his own business called ‘SC Builders Ltd,’ which he built up, achieving 20 new homes per annum. Simon and Kylie then joined the Jennian group later in 2000 becoming Jennian Homes Nelson Bays Ltd. The business has been a great success and their Nelson Bays Jennian Homes franchise has won the most franchise awards in Jennian’s 35+ year history. In 2002, Jennian Homes

Over that time, over 5000 women have run that event in Nelson which has been all about heart health which we have promoted locally and nationally.” Mark says in becoming a very successful company, Jennian have always tried to give back to the community – this has been the focus of their 20th anniversary celebrations. Another fundraising initiative Jennian has been involved with is the AED programme. “We have subsidized 120 AEDS (defibrillators) in the NelsonTasman region in recent years.” Jennian also sponsors a variety of different sports including hockey, netball, tennis, and rugby.

“The ribraft specialists” Congratulation Jennian Homes Nelson on your 20th Anniversary
Jennian Homes are your local custom design and build experts. They continue to set the bar high when it comes to custom design and build projects. Mark says most of the homes they build are ‘custom designed to client’s budgets.’ “We have a very strong pre-build process which brings clients personalities into the design. We build bespoke homes. We don’t say, ‘pick from one of five.’ You can come to us with your own building dreams and unique ideas and we will work with you to make it happen.” In Nelson –Tasman, Jennian has a big focus on the rural and lifestyle market as well as subdivision homes. Jennian also build in local subdivisions but each home will look different.
Be sure to visit Jennian Homes Nelson Bay’s fabulous new show homes on Berryfield Drive in Richmond. “We vary the rooflines, the façades, the layouts, the overall look.” Mark says their building process is very thorough and they ensure they go ‘deeper,’ looking into things like section geo technics and design elements. “We work with the client and design a home according to how they envisage their ideal space.”

Jennian homes – a sound investment
When people are contemplating building a home, there is a key reason why they choose Jennian. “It is not only that the company has proven success, but it’s the security of knowing it has been around for 20 years and the same owners still own the majority of the business. We also have a completion guarantee.” Mark says coming out of the Covid-19 crisis, people are looking for
confidence around where to invest their money. “If you want to put your money anywhere – Jennian is the place to do it, and a big market for us is investments and rentals. There has never been a better time to put money into bricks and mortar. It proves time and time again to be a sound investment.” “We have come out of coronavirus in a strong position and are proud of the way we have managed the return to work on our projects ensuring our people and the community are safe. We are back open for business and right now, we have plenty of land availability for people to purchase.”
The Jennian Homes Nelson Bays show homes on Berrfield Drive are great examples of ‘design and build’ incorporating a lot of architectural features.

Dollars coming for drought relief Jacob Page Reporter
editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz
A new $500,000 fund will help farmers and growers prepare their businesses to recover from drought as the economy gets moving again, Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor has announced. The fund will provide advisory services that usually cost $5000 to equip rural businesses with professional and technical advice to help them recover from, and better prepare for future, drought. “As we rebuild the economy following the effects of a global pandemic, we have an opportunity to build back better than before and factor in resilience for our productive primary sector,” Damien says. “So far this year the Government has invested $17 million to help drought-stricken regions recover from what many are saying is the worst drought in living memory. It has affected all of the North Island and a good portion of the South. “Although there has been a bit of rain relief recently, it takes steady rain at the right time to get grass growing again. The flow-on effects of water shortages and low feed availability take a long time to fully recover from and some farmers will be dealing with the effects of this drought for a year or more. ”One of the unusual consequences of the drought has already started to be noticed by consumers – that being the paler colour of our butter. “As the saying goes, ‘you are what you eat’. The same goes for cows. New Zealand’s unique pasture-
based farming system gives our butter a wonderful yellow colour. The shortage of grass and reliance on supplementary feed has meant our butter has started to turn white. A return to yellow will maintain our competitive advantage in our export markets. “We know that, with climate change, we can expect more acute weather events, so it’s important we help farmers and growers get their businesses ready for future drought. “Key to recovery is making good decisions, based on sound advice. The purpose of this new fund is to ensure our farmers and growers can tap into this advice. “The fund will address the longerterm issues but there are also ongoing, acute issues that need to be addressed with urgency. Access to feed is the biggest acute issue so two feed coordinators are in place as of today, one in the North Island and another in the South, to make sure available feed gets from where it is to where it’s most needed. “The primary sector has shown time and again it has the strength, resilience and ability to recover from tough times and come back stronger than ever. I have every faith that – with this support – they’ll get through this, too.’’ This announcement comes as the Top of the South Rural Support Trust has been encouraging farmers across the region to ask for help if they need it. Former Mayor Richard Kempthorne, who is no the Chair of the support group, says that while drought isn’t new to farmers, the combined effects of drought and Covid means that there are additional challenges.

The man behind the name - Bryant Road Marg Farrelly Lewis and Anne Mary Bryant, along with five children, arrived in Nelson on 15 October 1855. They came on the barque Queen Margaret which had taken 116 days to reach NZ from London. On arrival the family resided for a short time in Nelson, then moved to Appleby where Lewis took charge of the school there. From Appleby he went to Waiwero, near Ngatimoti, where he had a farm which did not prove the success he anticipated. After losing much money and ruining his health, he moved to Brightwater about 1862. In 1863 Lewis was appointed teacher at River Terrace School, near where Brightwater is now. William Henderson Bryant, son of Lewis, was born on 22 January 1864 in Brightwater. He attended school at River Terrace and then Richmond. After winning a 2-year boarding scholarship he attended Nelson College 1879-1880. William followed in his father’s footsteps and began a teaching career. He was appointed first assistant at Westport Boys’ School in 1882. After Westport, William taught at Hope School until he became headmaster of the new, brick Boys’ School at Brightwater (1889).
He had developed an interest in ferns and collected specimens from wherever he happened to be. On the 21 February 1899 William married Theresa Magdalena Max, daughter of
a Brightwater farmer. She was known as “Daisy” and was 11 years younger than William. She had briefly been one of his pupils at Brightwater School. From there she attended Nelson Girls’ College and then University, graduating with a BA from Canterbury University college in 1896. The Bryant family lived in a large wooden home by the Wairoa River in what is now Bryant Road. At the back of the house was STIHL William’s large fernery and

of control we really are. Think about it…hopefully we will eventually come up with a vaccine for Covid-19 (although we haven’t come up with one for the common cold or aids etc.) - but what about the next virus? or the next earthquake? Or cancer? Or bankruptcy? Or recession? Etc We human beings want control, and we like to think we are in control, but the reality that Covid-19 is vividly reminding us of is that ultimately, we are not in control! I know that’s a bitter pill to swallow for those who long to be the master of their own fate and captain of their soul, but it is true. We are not in control!!! So, am I saying things are hopeless? No, not at all! Ralph Abernathy wisely said, “I don't know what the future may hold, but I know who holds the future.” In my mind this is the key. Look to the One who is bigger than Covid-19, sickness, economic woes etc. Look to the One who has conquered death and promises that same victory to all who will put their trust in Him.

Runners hit the pavement again Yvonne West After the Summer Running Programme came to an abrupt halt with Covid-19 restrictions, a Waimea Harrier Strava Group was set up to promote virtual running and walking. This group provided motivation for athletes to keep up their training, encourage each other and keep connected, since meeting up to run was not an option and races were certainly off the agenda. As the country moved into Alert Level 2 last week, local runners

Runners and walkers had the opportunity to participate throughout the day, individually or in small groups, and see fellow athletes in ‘real life’ rather than in the ‘virtual’ world. While enjoying the event was the major focus for the 47 participants, some very good times were recorded. In the 7.5km race, Caleb Scott started at 8.50am, nabbed the fastest time of 28.12 mins and held onto it all day. Similarly, in the 10km race, Klaartjie van Schie was the earliest to start and her time of 41.51mins was also unbeaten.

Sport Tasman cyclist Niamh Fisher-Black is hoping to be back racing in Europe by August. The talented rider told Radio New Zealand last week, her season was disrupted before it could even begin due to the Coronavirus outbreak. She had not even raced once for her first professional team and was contracted with Team Bigla-Katusha in Europe before she was forced to return home. She told RNZ the team has since had sponsors pull out which further clouds the issue. Her younger brother Fin has also had his time with a Dutch team interrupted. The UCI has released a revised racing calendar which they hope will restart by August 1. The postponement of the Tokyo Olympics until next year also puts it on the radar for the talented Niamh.
