Bright future ahead for Salisbury School Matt McCrorie Reporter

matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz

There are smiles all around at Salisbury school right now. That’s because the all-girls school in Richmond has just received a funding boost – one that will secure its future. And if that wasn’t enough good news, the school has just announced the appoint-

ment of a new Principal, Ellie Salcin-Watts. Ellie will start the role at the beginning of term one in 2020, and board Chair Emma Thompson says the thorough recruitment process attracted several highcalibre candidates. Ellie has both hands-on and management experience in learning support, and as the school’s Deputy Principal for five terms, she has an good understanding of

the school and its students. “Ellie’s passion for the school is palpable and her strengths are numerous,” says Emma. “As Deputy Principal she has made a positive impact since she joined us last year by ably supporting our former Principal Brenda and by re-invigorating the school curriculum.” The new Principal said that she was excited about a new future for the school, and to build on the

success that the school has had in the last year. “We’ve seen huge growth in our students since introducing playbased learning and trying to find new ways of helping our girls see themselves as a success.” Ellie has been involved heavily with restructuring the school’s curriculum this year and introducing new and innovative ways of learning. She says that its’ rewarding to be able to see the

they’ll be able to do with a new purpose-built facility.” The appointment of a new principal comes off the back of some other great news for the school – funding to completely replace the school’s dated classrooms. Last week Education Minister Chris Hipkins announced an $8 million construction budget to replace the school’s classrooms and rundown accommodation. The school for girls aged 8-15, in Richmond, was earmarked for closure by the last government until the process was stopped by Chris Hipkins in 2017. The School is New Zealand’s only single-sex residential school for girls with complex needs, and the board say that

they are thrilled about the planned multi-million dollar rebuild to replace its aged buildings, some of which are nearly 90 years old. “I’m delighted that in two short years, Salisbury School has gone from facing closure to a confident future where students with learning challenges will continue to receive a quality education and learn essential life skills in a modern and safe environment,” says Chris. The school was originally created in 1917 and is one of three residential special schools in New Zealand for students with highly complex behaviour or learning needs that impact their lives at home, school and in the community. “Almost all of the school’s buildings are more than 50

years old and much of it over 90 years old,” Chris said. “They are not inspiring environments for learning and living and they don’t meet our high standards for delivering education,” Chris said. “This is particularly important at a residential special school where suitable facilities require very high specifications.” Salisbury School Board Chair Emma Thompson said the Board of Trustee’s is over the moon the plans for a new fit-for-purpose school are going ahead. “It is really exciting to know we will have new school buildings specifically designed for what our extraordinary students need, given that their needs are a lot more complex today compared to when our current buildings

were designed,” says Emma. The redevelopment, which is expected to begin in 2021, will see the demolition or removal of the existing residential and ancillary buildings, administration block and day school. These will be replaced with new residential units to cater for a roll of 20 high-needs students, a new administration block, a multi-purpose hall and dining facility and a kitchen. A new day school will also be built. The new buildings will be specially designed to suit the needs of the individual students, given that their needs are more complex today than what the school buildings were originally designed for. “It is fantastic that the need of our students has been listened to,” says Emma.

A&P dramas brought to life at 125th show Staff Reporter Throughout its rich history, the Nelson Agricultural and Pastoral (A&P) Association has experienced its fair share of ups and downs. Having weathered two world wars, fire, the depression, army occupation, pandemic, death and even a national poor flour furore, there are many in-

teresting characters and captivating stories. To help celebrate their 125th Show this year, some of the Association’s untold stories are being brought to life. “The historical performances aim to provide insight into what life was like for the people, the small town of Richmond, and the Association,” says A&P As-

sociation Secretary, Annette Robinson. With the financial support of both Tasman and Nelson Creative Communities scheme, ‘History Brought to Life’ is bringing to life 19 November 1918 – the scheduled first day of the 26th A&P Show – the first show in the Association’s history that didn’t take place. 1918 Richmond was

Tasman District Council Dry Weather Taskforce convenor Dennis Bush- The Waimea Plains were bone dry last summer, with the rainfall in January - Feburary reaching King is encouraging people to conserve water as the region still has a lot of the lowest in nearly 80 years. Tasman prepares for another dry summer Matt McCrorie The region was hit hard by drought last summer. And it doesn’t look like we’re off the hook this summer either, with the Tasman District Council Dry Weather Task Force already preparing for another dry, hot summer. Earlier this year the region saw the driest months since records began 78 years ago, with just 8.8mm of rain across the Waimea Plains in January and February. Now, the council’s Dry Weather

taskforce is already beginning to make preparations. Rob Smith, Environmental Information manager, said that “The first task-force meeting was held much earlier than in previous years. We took on board from last year that we need to be well prepared for the dry season to come.” Environment and Planning Manager Dennis Bush-King says that rain hasn’t been at a high level this year, with the region being between 8 to 26 % behind its usual annual rainfall.

“We are starting behind the eight ball.” Dennis says that The Kainui Dam is only 76% full right now, and that normally it should be 100% full by November 1. “It got down to 18 per cent during the last drought, which is pretty low.” “Despite the wetter months in May and July, we are still below average for this year’s cumulative rainfall. This trend is mirrored across the region.” Another indicator that a dry summer is on the way is soil moisture,

which is currently sitting at 53% for the Waimea Plains. “You don’t want it to be under 60%” However, soil moisture is looking better than last year. “With the rain in the last week, soil moisture has recovered to levels above this time last year.” Dennis says that while the rain we have had over the weekend has been helpful, residents still need to be vigilant. We will be doing our best as a council to make it through another dry summer.

“This year we’ve got to use our water wisely,” Dennis says. “We certainly got down to levels of restriction that we hadn’t been to in a long time last summer we had debriefs to find out what worked and what didn’t.” In the Waimea Plains, rationing may be staged differently than it has been in the past, so it’s important to pay attention to the news and council website. “I know that some water users have made serious attempts to prepare as well, which will go a long way.”

yet to have electric lighting, the sanitation system was long drops and buckets (the night cart hadn’t even started yet!), butchery deliveries were by horseback, children enjoyed “the flicks” at the Oddfellows Hall for one shilling, and the annual A&P Show was typically one of the biggest community gatherings each year. “It was such a rich and fascinating time in the region’s history,” says History Brought to Life coordinator Judene Edgar.

“The Armistice had just been signed, the country was celebrating the end of war, but at the same time it was in the grip of the influenza pandemic.” “Typically, we think of the showgrounds only in terms of the annual Show, but it is so much more than two days a year, and its role in becoming a temporary hospital in 1918 is just one example of that.” The group are performing at 12.45pm and 1.30pm on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 November

Air New Zealand is adding more than 500 flights to the regions, including Nelson, in the wake of Jetstar shutting up its provincial shop. Last month, Jetstar confirmed it is going ahead with plans to withdraw from regional services in New Zealand - meaning routes to places like Nelson, Napier, New Plymouth and Palmerston North will officially end on November 30. However, Air New Zealand announced today that 586 new one-way flights will help make up for the loss from January to March next year. They include routes between

Auckland and Napier, New Plymouth, Nelson and Palmerston North, as well as between Nelson and Wellington. This December, the airline will also add an extra 253 one-way services to the same routes. Air New Zealand Acting Chief Executive Officer Jeff McDowall said the airline had been working hard to look at how best to utilise its turboprop aircraft and crew to support routes impacted by Jetstar’s withdrawal. “We’re pleased to be able to get behind regional New Zealand by adding these extra services, particularly during the summer months. “These additional services

Alongside that, Air New Zealand annouced that it will also be assisting affected Jetstar customers with a special fare. Police are urging people in the region to be aware of counterfeit banknotes which have recently been circulating the area. Police are investigating two reports of a person using a counterfeit $100 banknote to purchase items in the region in recent days. Police are reminding businesses to be vigilant in checking cash, particularly $50 and $100 notes. “If you believe someone is trying to pass you a counterfeit note, do not accept it and notify Police.” “If you find you’ve already received

Island living with a difference just outside of Richmond is now a possibility with a rare piece of land up for sale. For those who fancy owning a slice of an island just a few kilometres out of Richmond, 33 Barnett Avenue is set to be sold by December 17. The 61 hectare slice of Best Island is on the market for tender with PGG Wrightson Real Estate. Nestled between the Greenacres golf course and Best Island settlement, the property is a mix of zonings between rural 1, 2 and residential land. There is also an existing gravel extraction consent which provides steady income for the current own-

ers says Joe Blakiston, who is marketing the property with local agent Doug Smith. “The Barnett family have owned this land for over 50 years and are currently finishing cattle on it, however we see options for change of land use, development potential or simply land banking as we see the boundaries of Richmond push out in this direction,” Blakiston says. “Including a modest 3 bedroom dwelling with estuary views and other farm buildings, this is an exciting listing which will see a new owner before Christmas.” The property has estuary boundaries on two sides of the property with the Greenacres golf course on the western boundary and the Best Island residential area to the east.

Nelson Matters

This week I have been confirmed as National’s Candidate for the 2020 Election. I love my job as your MP and would be privileged to give it my all for a further three years. I enjoy the role of helping constituents and making Government work better for people. The most satisfying part is helping advance projects big and small, that make Nelson a better place to live. Every term of Parliament my goal is to help get a major Nelson project done. These have included in the past – Whakatu Drive, Garin College, the Early Settlers Memorial, Saxton Stadium, the Suter Art Gallery, School of Music and the

Nelson Airport Terminal. This term was the Waimea Community Dam now underway and on schedule for completion in 2021. My top priority for the 2020 term of Parliament is getting a new hospital underway for Nelson. The current buildings are a seismic risk. It has insufficient beds for our growing and aging population. Nor is the facility up to the standard for patients, doctors and nurses. This new Nelson Hospital will likely cost half a billion and will be the largest infrastructure project ever undertaken in our region. My goal is a new facility that will meet Nelson’s health needs for the next 50 years.

My second priority is transport with the region’s problems with congestion and safety getting worse. Labour has repeatedly increased fuel taxes and road user charges while slashing state highway investment by 70%. They have overturned National’s $135m commitment to the Southern Link. There is an urgent need for major investment in Nelson’s roads to keep up with the growth in population, exports and visitors. The Southern Link has noisy critics, but like the Waimea Community Dam, common sense will prevail. The alternatives are not credible. The solution will be in clever designing of this new stretch of high-

The family owned business Office Products Depot on McGlashen Ave is run by Paul and Jodie Keenan and their team of 14 staff. When mum and dad need an extra hand, daughter Olivia will help out when she’s not at university. From Monday to Friday the staff who are ‘passionate about customer service’ can provide everything from pencils to custom made office furniture. Paul has over 30 years’ experience in the business and both he and Jodie are longterm supporters of their local community. Pop in and see their new customised cobblestoned feature wall, painted by a local artist. See a list of participating businesses each week in the Waimea Weekly.

concern of this Government’s direction on social and economic issues. It is a mistake to go soft on crime and drugs and I strongly oppose the legalisation of recreational cannabis. Labour’s economic policies are damaging Nelson’s business confidence and job growth. It’s not enough to be critics of the Government. I have this year been leading National’s policy development. We have put huge work into our future plans for New Zealand and welcome feedback on our discussion papers available from my office or at national.org.nz My campaign next year will focus on our positive plans for Nelson and NZ. way between Annesbrook and the port so as to minimise the impacts on the adjacent community and enhance our network of cycle ways. Richmond too needs significant roading investment. My third priority is education. Nelson has everything to lose and nothing to gain from the nationalisation of NMIT. I worry about the loss of courses and jobs. I’ll be giving voters a clear choice to retain local control of our polytechnic. I will also be campaigning on reducing class sizes and retaining parental choice of schools. I want to help deliver a new Berryfields School in Richmond West. I am also standing again out of

About to lead in theA & P Grand Parade circa 1967 is from left: John Wall, Colleen Best (nee Wells) person unknown, and Maxine Greenslade. This was from a time when the A and P show was quite the social occasion and most in the area turned up. It was a time when families would get together to compare everything from beasts to produce and also have a chance to wear only the very best of their wardrobes. Often this was the only time that neighbours would spend time just being social and it was taken very seriously if you entered any of the many show and win competitions. Colleen mentioned she still has the yoke used in this photograph in her garage. In the smaller picture is the famous O’Connor team of Clydesdales, who each year started out from Appleby on a Thursday heading to the show. They would stop at Lower Queen St for a rest at the Best Farm and the local kids would be in awe of this spectacular sight.

I

As President of the Nelson A & P Association I would like to welcome everyone to the 125th Nelson A & P Show. This year, in honour of our 125th Show, we have published the book From the Country to the Town, to commemorate our rich, varied history and the show. The history of the association, formed in 1893, as well as Richmond Park is an interesting one and the book touches on the many trials faced over the years such as the destruction of the picturesque grandstand

by fire as well as the impact of the Spanish Flu and World Wars. Make sure you head to the PGG Wrightson Shed if you wish to purchase the book, see the photo display, or share your own memories of the show with us for a chance to win a great prize. Special highlights this year include live historical performances based on some of the stories in From the Country to the Town, Trans-Tasman competitions in the Dog Trials and Wood Chopping and a Doggy Fashion Show run by The Breeze. Enter your canine companion in the Saturday Fashion Show for a chance to

the continual support and assistance of our sponsors, particularly our primary benefactor and neighbour Golden Edge Nelson Pine Industries. We would also like to thank Haven Motors, the TDC, the New Zealand Community

Wayne Williams Hi everyone. As we are rapidly counting down to Christmas, we have had plenty to keep us busy here at the Club. RWC 2019 – so sad never mind, but we had some very good nights watching the games and the rugby section enjoyed several get togethers, also with Tasman winning the NPC for the first time. Awesome! We hosted a very successful Nelson Country Music Awards weekend, showcasing a huge amount of talent - augers well for years to come. This was followed by the National Cake Decorators Conference, which also included a conference dinner which we hosted, but was held at the Headingly Centre. A lot of organisational effort went into this whole event, and a special thanks to Denise for her patience and efforts. November 5th saw the run-

Well done to you all. We also have a couple of projects on the go at the moment, with the re-organisation (including re carpeting ) of the snooker room, and also the total rebuild of the hall ablution block, completion of these all this side of Xmas. Then we have had a couple of $2000 winners; Tania Cross on 15th September, and Suzanne Lorigan on 7th November – well done team. Mike Fisher then picked up $250 on 14th November, so it just shows that you need to be here on Thursday nights in case your number turns up. I want to thank the staff for their dedication and efforts, in particular over the last couple of months while I have been mostly out of action. But now that my hip woes are over, I can get back into things and take some of the pressure off. Thanks team. That’s it from me for now, so cheers everyone!

The idea to form the Waimea South Garden Club was Mrs Edna Price’s, she instructed classes in floral art in Brightwater and discussed the idea with her students. The first recorded minutes of the first meeting states that

ber 1969 there was ‘a meeting held at Mr and Mrs Dave Morrison’s house this evening with a view to form a garden club,’ 33 local people and two from the Nelson Garden Club were present and it was decided to call this new club Waimea South Garden

Club. The early meetings were held in members’ homes and then later in the Brightwater hall. The subscription then was 75 cents a year (it’s now $15) and to raise money for costs members collected beer bottles, washed them and returned them to the Brightwater Hotel. Another fundraiser was doing the flower arrangements for weddings. “That would involve about five people and a lot of work,” says Colleen Flower, another life member. That was popular until the late 1990s and then brides started to go to florists instead. The club was active in the past, entering and winning competitions in Richmond and Nelson, putting on public displays and exhibitions. Talented members like Doug Price built structures such as a mini cottage (photo) and a large

dove for a Victory Day parade which the ladies would then decorate with flowers. But with the passing of time, the pace has needed to slow a little. These days the 80 members visit gardens, have guest speakers, take day trips and of course work in their gardens. “Enjoying their gardens and gardening has been very much the spirit of the club over the years and our members are here to enjoy themselves,” says life member Beverley Hodgkinson. To celebrate their anniversary the garden club is having high tea with entertainment at the Brightwater Hall, Lord Rutherford Road (venue change due to unexpected number of attendees) December 7th at 1 pm. Past presidents will speak, life members will be created, and a worthy anniversary celebrated.

Local art takes a stand against waste Peter Gibbs Richmond based artist Maggy Johnston says that it’s time to take a stand against the CO2 output from the international clothing industry. Her exhibition in the McKee gallery at The Suter delivers this message in three parts and will culminate in an unfurling of a massive ball of fabric in Nelson’s CBD later this month. In ‘Fashion Conscious?’ Maggy takes $5 t-shirts, imported from Bangladesh, and adds designer labels - the perceived value and social position that implies thereby raising the price to extreme levels. In ‘Material Girl’, the centrepiece of the exhibition, the artist has taken cuttings from old clothing to make a dramatic dress more than three metres long, ma-

nipulating it to create an impression of high fashion value and opulence. The third part of the exhibition is ‘Rolling Stone’. Maggy is in attendance at the exhibition every day until November 23, working her way through a mountain of discarded clothing which would otherwise be thrown into landfill. The clothing is cut into strips, then crocheted into a long rope and added to a huge ball of fabric. Maggy invites viewers to join her in this project. At the conclusion of the exhibition, a video project will document the unrolling of the ball through the heart of Nelson as an illustration of the growing size of the issues caused by the fast fashion industry. Enough is Enough continues in the McKee gal- Maggy Johnston with her garment Material lery until November 24. Girl at the McKee Gallery. Photo: Supplied.

Just a thought... Seph Pijfers Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Catholic Church From the moment of our first breath we begin our journey Home, to our place of the heart, our true Home. Scripture reminds us that eternal life is not earned or merited but it is a graced gift for all who believe and trust in God’s promise. So often we are in absolute awe when watching the inspirational nature documentaries on TV, as we see amazing pictures of great migrations of thousands of animals, birds, fish and insects on their mission of returning home over thousands of kilometres. All this they do by instinct. We travel through our lives, drawn in love, faith and trust to our Home, where we will live eternally. No matter how blessed this life has been for us, or how sad, deprived or unloved we may feel, we hold the sure hope that heaven has been promised. In the second book of Maccabees, the story is told of seven brothers who were arrested with their

mother. They were all tortured by the King’s men as they tried to make them break the Law of their ancestors. This story should be horrifying to us, but it shows the example of a very courageous mother and her seven sons who willingly suffered torture and martyrdom at the hands of the Syrians because they believed in the Resurrection. So often we read similar stories of extreme suffering from times of war, refugee camps, people trapped and dying in prisons, locked in containers and trafficked. Is our world so very different when these events can take place? Courage is a wonderful virtue and we all admire the ordinary, everyday people who endure great suffering, poverty and hardship, those who hold on and trust despite everything. Jesus came that “we might have life and have it to the full”. For those who believe, death is not the end but rather the going Home to the place of Promise “which eye has not seen nor has it entered into the hearts of those who believe”.

Nelson/Tasman

The Sailability slogan is ‘enabling disabled Nelsonians to experience the freedom and joy of sailing’. The Nelson/Tasman branch is one of ten active clubs across New Zealand and the only one in the South Island. It was formed five years ago when three ex-competitive yachties took a failing idea and ran with it. They started with a borrowed boat and with help from the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation in Christchurch and Yachting New Zealand now has five boats and 25 sailors. The sailors are all ages and disabilities, the club has a hoist so even being in a wheelchair is no reason not to sail. Bad weather will usually cancel the sailing. If its not that, it will be a lack of volunteers. With only a pool of 18 volun-

teers to call on it’s something they are desperately short of. The boats used are called Hansa and are specially designed. They have a heavy centre board making them harder to tip over, the sailors sit lower in the boat in a type of hammock and the sail is set higher, so no ducking required. The club has two types of boats, a small, light craft for children and beginners and a heavier larger boat that can take two adults for the more experienced sailors and those able to sail solo. Eight sailors can sail independently, and four sailors have been invited to a regatta in Wellington next year. Thomas Whittle is 11 years old and has been sailing for about three years. His mum Sarah Whittle thinks it has a calming effect on him. “Thomas loves being on the water, I think he

loves the peace and quiet, having some time to himself. He also really likes talking to the volunteers,” says Sarah from Hope. Ali Frew-Stanton from Richmond agrees. Her daughter Indigo is in her fourth season with Sailability. “Indigo comes back very calm and relaxed and with more confidence,” Ali says. “We’re at capacity due to the volunteer’s numbers and we can’t take any more sailors,” says John MacDuff, a Trust member and volunteer. “so we have decided to apply for funding for a paid co-ordinator. With a co-ordinator the service could be offered to schools to use during the week, it would take it to the next level. “Volunteers do not need to be sailors, you just need to have an interest in people. Sophie set to take her talents to Hawaii Jacob Page Richmond gymnast Sophie Manson will represent New Zealand at the Aloha Championships in Hawaii in January. The 15-year-old is the highest ranked gymnast in the region at step 10 and competed against Australia at the trans-Tasman event last month while also claiming a gold in the bars and the vault and silver on the floor at the national championships in Auckland last month. “It’s been quite stressful juggling exams as well but I have really good friends and a supportive family. Sophie has been competing since she was six-years-old. “I just love the sport and enjoyed the challenge of learning new skills. “It’s as close as you can get to flying and you could just let rip and do what you wanted in the gym. “When I compete I love showing off the hard work.” Sophie says that one day she would like to become an orthopaedic surgeon one day but first would like to earn a college scholarship to compete and study in America after Nelson College for Girls.

Not so slow Bo: Photo supplied.

Bo Hill was only seven when he first drove a go-kart on a proper track and at first, he says “I was really scared and really slow but by the end of the session I loved it”. The Year 9 Waimea College student isn’t scared or slow anymore, in fact, he’s just won his first KartSport South

Island Sprint Championship Title. Bo has won several event titles, Sunbelts Sprint Champs, McLaren Racing Mainland Series, but this is his first national title. “I love the adrenaline rush and the speed of the kart,” says Bo. He travels around New Zealand to the events with his Dad, Adrian, which he enjoys and

likes the camaraderie with the other karting families. But it hasn’t been easy. “Finally, all our hard work is paying off,” he says. Bo isn’t slowing down either with the KartSport NZ National Sprint Championships in Christchurch next Easter and after that more karting and then maybe a move into Formula Ford.

Next generation of Nelson Speedway making their mark Jody Scott

Speedway Reporter editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Milestone Top of the South Speedway stocks have been boosted by the next generation of youth ministock drivers making their debut this season. Six new drivers, Luke Higgins, Harlen Brunt, Toby Walker, Daniel Yaxley, Cambell McManaway and Jack Burson, have fronted in Nelson and sport some pretty famous last names. They have had the mentor programme to navigate for their first few meetings and they are welcome members given that the same amount have exited

for the adult grades. The new racing rules were introduced to the youth grade this year, yellow lights and rolling starts have proved successful over the first few meetings while 30 youth drivers were entered for the rained-out stampede. Some of the new drivers are second and third generation competitors. These drivers are getting a head start on their parents as the youth grade has only been around for just over a decade, but has grown to the biggest number of competitors around speedway tracks in New Zealand. It is proving a huge stepping stone for kids moving into multiple forms of motor rac-

ing around the country and the world. The class in Nelson have around 19 drivers with visitors often turning up to race as well, but if you tally up the number of youth drivers coming through over the years it’s become an essential part of the club. Current three-time South Island stock car champion Keightley Teece started his career in youth ministocks, while others have moved into TQ’s, sprint cars and super stocks over the years. The Hydraulink War of the Wings and PTS SuperStock Stampede meeting meant for last Saturday was postponed until a later date after wet weather intervened.

M.P.I. are now starting the process to review the area 7 Snapper TAC. To date one meeting has been held to outline the process to all fishing sectors with the next meeting to be held in early December when there will be a presentation of the new science reviewing the status of the Snapper stocks. I think all agree that it is pleasing to see the Snapper in Tasman Bay increasing in numbers. A public consultation process will start in February 2020 with any changes coming into effect in November 2020. During the public consultation process I believe that it is time to review the amateur regulations for Snapper in area 7. Marlborough Sounds has three Snapper per person and long lines only in the outer sound. Do we need 10 Snapper each and 2 long lines per boat...? Just a thought. The weather is still doing it’s

spring thing and for the lucky ones (those who are enjoying retirement) who can go fishing any day when the weather is good – results have seen some excellent catches of good size snapper. The catches have been mainly in the 30 to 40 metre line area, but also there have been reports of catches from Rabbit Island and the bottom area of Tasman Bay. But not as many as in the deeper water. One of the techniques you could try for snapper fishing this season is to leave the bait at home and use jigs, the same as winter fishing at d’Urville Island. Preference of jig type has been the Docan and Baku Baku in the forty to eighty gram size range, depending on the depth of water and current. Both are available from Big Blue and Hunting and Fishing, along with all the advice you need. Tight lines! Find more info on www.dawn breakers.co.nz or on Facebook.

Kickstart your compost with a $30 subsidy November is Kickstart Compost Month and, to help you get going, we're offering Tasman households $30 off a compost bin, worm farm or bokashi set from approved retailers. Partnerships and education officer Nichola Brydon says composting is an easy and effective way to reduce the amount of food waste going to landfill, as well as reduce the carbon emissions it creates.

24/2/67 – 29/9/2019 Andrews family, Jo and George wish to thank all of those who have supported us over these past weeks, with flowers, cards, messages and food, and all who joined with us in celebrating his life on Wednesday October 2nd at the Nelson Cathedral. We are truly grateful. We especially thank Bishop Richard Ellena for leading the service so sensitively and the kind words spoken. To the Cathedral parish, our grateful thanks for the generous use of your beautiful cathedral. To the Nelson City Brass, and musical director Nigel Weeks, thank you for the music which helped us all to sing the well-loved hymns. The 2 items you played were a moving tribute to the music Andrew loved, and which was such a big part of his life. To the Nelson City Brass band committee and members: thank you for providing the magnificent afternoon tea at the Band Rooms. This gave us time to talk to you and all our guests, as we remembered many past good times. To all those who travelled from away to attend, and those of his present workmates from Motueka and past employment who came, we thank you also. Thank you also to those who attended from other brass bands and took part in the massed band march at the end of the service. Andrew always loved a march. This part will always be remembered. Please accept this acknowledgement as a personal expression of our gratitude.
