No freedom for flags Emily Beaumont Reporter
emily@waimeaweekly.co.nz
For years, Richmond retailers have flown flags outside their premises as a way to attract customers to their business. Policy surrounded the flags with a rule in place stipulating the flag must not hamper the use of the footpath. However, for years this was ungoverned and it’s now the Tasman District Council’s decision to impose fines on those not complying that has been met with outrage and disbelief at the audacity of the timing. Already suffering from the Queen Street upgrade that has businesses reporting lower than usual cash flow, business owners say they need to use any means possible to let customers know they’re open for trade. “The council’s approach to this will make the street look plain and boring. There’s no diversity to it. Especially at the moment, we need people to be able to see we’re here and we’re open,” says Lea Lock, owner of Captivation. Chris Choat, TDC community relations manager, says the issue is not with the flags themselves but how they’re being used. “We completely understand it’s a tough time for retailers but we need to maintain accessibility for everyone on the footpath. There’s a balance we need to find,” says Chris. With the footpath on sections of Queen Street restricted due to the upgrade, Chris says the issue of flags is being accentuated at present. “It’s about providing an opportunity for

“Not really, no. I don’t think it’s fair. I think that’s a bit over the top, it’s ridiculous.”
“No. With the road upgrade it’s really difficult shopping here and they’re trying to get customers into their shops by advertising on flags.”
“No way is that fair. That’s crap. They shouldn’t have to pay the fines.”
“Who would complain about a flag? I think the council’s being pretty unfair.”

No freedom for flags FROM PAGE 1 businesses to advertise but also access for pedestrians is important right now,” says Chris. Adrian Bradley from the Barbershop opted to place his flag in the garden outside his shop, but was warned to remove it or risk copping a fine. “The flag was in the garden so no-one could trip over it. We had 11 months of fences and no trade down this end, then they come and hit us in the arse with that. For years they haven’t enforced the rules so why now when we’re already suffering so much,” says Adrian. Richmond Unlimited’s Marina Buonocore is calling on the council to rescind the fines and cut retailers some slack. “I think the council’s jumped the gun a wee bit while the road closure is still in place. Retailers are struggling as it is at the moment and with council issuing fines, even more so. We’ve written to council asking for leniency on this and have said we would educate retailers about the enforcement, but are yet to hear back,” says Marina.
Hats off for Kiwibank Amy Russ
Richmond business owner Joe Silva has been dealing with banks for most of his life. On Thursday, he stopped in at the Richmond Kiwibank branch as usual to make a deposit into one of the two accounts he has there. Only this time, he says their improper handling of a situation made him feel mocked in front of other customers. After approaching the counter Joe was asked to remove his cap. Which, for personal reasons, he refused. He felt it was unnecessary for him to do so as he has been banking there since 2011, has accounts with other banks around the region as well, and it has never been an issue before. The Kiwibank staff member

Joe felt embarrassed and ‘like “The policy is stupid and very a criminal’ in that situation flawed,” says Joe, “but it was and as a result has decided to the unprofessional handling close both accounts with the of the matter, and laughter I bank and has laid a complaint felt from the staff as I walked with the main branch.
Grant Christall, manager of Kiwibank Richmond, says that there is a blanket policy for their banks to clearly identify people. Grant says, “it is standard practice in any bank, so we can ID the customers for everyone’s safety, and for the cameras.” The practice was also confirmed by a Richmond Westpac staff member, but says they also use their discretion with consistently returning customers. “We like to have happy customers,” says Grant, “I can assure you there was no smirking, we wouldn’t do that. We couldn’t understand why the customer was so upset, but I would like to take the opportunity to apologise to Joe on behalf of my staff. I am sorry if he was offended.”

Water leak floods cafe Emily Beaumont Sandra Begg was left “devastated” by the flooding that occurred at her Queen Street Boulevard Café on Tuesday, March 13. Alerted to the flooding by a staff member first thing on Tuesday morning, Sandra immediately went to her business. “As I walked through I could see the carpet was wet and as I got closer to the kitchen I was walking through water. It was completely flooded,” says Sandra. Water had been pouring into her business from the floor above overnight, believed to be caused by a faulty valve that continually discharged after contractors working on the Queen Street upgrade turned the water supply back on. “It was leaking through the ceiling, light fittings and over the vat. It was just gushing in all those areas, coming through absolutely everywhere,” says Sandra. The clean-up began after the leaking finally subsided at midday on Tuesday and a generator was brought in to keep the freezer going until a temporary power supply was arranged. Fondly referred to as the ‘happy café’ because of the smiling staff, Sandra is concentrating on looking to the future rather than apportioning blame. “At the end of the day these things happen. We’ve got to be positive and move forward. It was something we had no control over.” With solid insurance cover, Sandra is confident her business will bounce back and she’s looking forward to public support with business resuming as normal this week.

Singing southern men Emily Beaumont Hitting the high notes in Richmond’s town hall this weekend will be the southern men of the national men’s choir and if you’re an interested male singer, you’re invited! Auditions are welcome with membership to the choir gained from a successful audition. With around 50 members from all over New Zealand the choir is of international standard and is expertly led by Joseph Christensen, a trained opera singer from Hawkes Bay. “We’re always looking for new people
and now it’s Richmond’s turn,” says Norman Phillips, “you don’t have to belong to a choir to be in, as long as you can sing and pass the audition, you’re in.” Travel opportunities await the choir, with tours every five years to the Northern Hemisphere and trips across the ditch to Australia in between. Norman cites the camaraderie of the group and the opportunity to improve vocal skills as some of the many benefits to joining the men. Any interested male singers should pop along to the town hall on Saturday, March 24 between 10am-5pm or Sunday, March 25 between 8.30am-1pm.

Guide dogs chase dollars Emily Beaumont
For the visually-impaired, a guide dog enables freedom and independence, arguably two of life’s more fulfilling qualities. This Friday and Saturday, volunteers will be on the streets collecting for the Red Puppy Appeal. The money raised through the appeal allows the Blind Foundation to breed and train guide dogs for those who are blind or suffer from low vision. The dogs help handlers with all sorts of everyday tasks, like getting to work and using public transport. Vanessa Hardinge from Stoke’s Blind Foundation office says it costs $25,000 to raise a puppy and follow it through its lifetime. “We never stop training them. Their first two years is all about introducing them to places,” she says. Reliant on volunteer dog walkers exposing the puppies to a variety of different environments, the puppy is then placed with a client for the next eight to nine years, allowing their handler to get around safely and confidently. Vanessa says the well-being of the puppy in its potential home life is paramount when placing it with clients. “We assess whether the client can provide a good home life for the dog. The dog needs enough exercise and a good quality of life.” This weekend though, the emphasis is on the generosity of the public to enable further training of puppies to meet the high demand.

The thought of being on stage can excite or terrify, but the experienced and complete newbie kids from Live Arts Nelson, based in Richmond, are having a ball. Under the guidance of Sarah Pumphrey and Odie Stratmore-Ching the theatrical and production skills of a group of around 40 kids are showing no bounds. The pair agree the opportunity to take part in live theatre is providing the kids with an incredible learning tool. “The kids have to use their imagination, it helps them become more interactive with their brains,” says Odie. The youth theatre group is busy rehearsing for their upcoming production of Snow White. For the first time in at least 20 years the Richmond Town Hall will host a production. “It’s really fun preparing for this show. We’ve still got a bit of work to get there. It’s giving us a massive sense of satisfaction as we watch the kids’ confidence grow so much in a few weeks,” says Sarah. There’re four shows of Snow White to catch in Richmond with the opening performance on Friday, April 20, at 6.30pm and two daytime performances over the weekend. “Get me to hospital” are not the words that Luke Ashby thought he would be yelling when he woke for work one Friday morning. His day started as normal, but when out assessing a job, just out of Wakefield, the day took a turn for the worse. The Nelmac arborist was stung by a swarm of wasps, at least seventeen times, his body started to shut down and the mad dash for help was made. The Wakefield Fire Brigade responded within minutes of the 111 call. Luke still remembers, as his vision was fading and he started to black out, the sound of the sirens that “without the First Response Fire Brigade, things would have been very different..” Peter Holland, Deputy Chief Fire Officer for Area 17, says “we are one of two stations that has a First Response Unit. We try and achieve a seven-minute response time. That’s our fire and emergency goal.” For Lee Babe, CEO of Nelmac, wanted to make the $500 donation to the service, and say a hugely personal thank you, for the outstanding volunteer com-

We are so grateful to these people for giving up their own time to volunteer for the service. I want them to know that it is really appreciated, and make sure these guys get the credit they deserve. Because without them, Luke wouldn’t be standing here today.” Nineteen out of twenty stations
in New Zealand are run by volunteers. The Wakefield station has been here since 1953 and has always been volunteer-based. There are 20 staff currently at the Wakefield brigade, but they are always on the lookout for new members for the waiting list. “Situations change, jobs change and people move on,” says Peter, “so it’s great to have a list of people ready and willing to step up.” Two of their newest members fin-
ished their recruitment phase in the last six months. “For our training, the foundations of it are still the same,” says Dot Ashton, Wakefield Station Officer, ”everyone is medically trained across the board, but as first responders we are trained in the next step up. There is no ambulance in Wakefield, we are it.” The funds donated by Nelmac will help greatly with buying pieces of equipment for the team.
John Ross, Senior Station Officer says “every little bit helps. The Fire and Emergency provide all the gear, but donations like this one leave us a window to purchase extra things for the crew, like headlamps. That makes a difference in certain situations.” To find out how to join or donate contact Peter Holland peter.holland@fireandemergency.nz or check out the website www.fireandemergency.nz

Parbati Rai was one of 14 applicants for this year’s $2500 education grant from Waimea’s Soroptimist Club and it was her ability to successfully assimilate into New Zealand life that saw her stand out and receive the grant. Originally from Bhutan but arriving in New Zealand as a refugee from Nepal in August 2016, Parbati says she is determined to focus on her present life, not her past. The 43-year mother of two is in her second year of a Bachelor of Social Work at NMIT. “I got extremely absorbed with social issues while in Nepal camp and got inspired to do something for people. I found social work was an area where I could work and do something for the people,” says Parbati of her decision to embark on the qualification. “It’s great, I’m enjoying it (study). I’m learning psychology, human behaviours and am excited for social research coming up. I’m enjoying everything,” she says. Parbati credits the course for challenging her to learn about her own behaviours and is determined in the future to work with disadvantaged females who are oppressed. Also concerning Parbati is the issue of loneliness and isolation facing many elderly, so she’s looking forward to completing her studies and being able to help in this area too. With some of the financial burden relieved by the generous grant, Parbati says she’s thriving in NMIT’s learning environment and her new life in Nelson. “It’s so humbling and inspiring to be part of New Zealand society. I love that I have my own space to be myself and find what it is I’m seeking. I have the freedom to do everything I want to do.” Waimea Soroptimist Club’s education committee member Lesley Johnstone says Parbati was an easy choice for their annual education grant available to women over 25 undertaking a tertiary qualification. “She will be such a benefit to New Zealand because she’s so motivated to move on with her life and do good and help others. She’s stepped forward from her past and moved on,” says Lesley. Parbati says receiving the grant “felt emotionally very validating and made me feel like a deserving person”.

Anything goes! Are you an artist producing work that just doesn’t seem to fit in with most mainstream galleries? Perhaps it’s a little edgy, naïve or even unrefined. Arts Council Nelson (ACN) is now offering you an exciting exhibition opportunity. The council is inviting self-taught artists to submit 2D and 3D artworks for a special, free exhibition that aims to showcase works that are created by people who have no formal or traditional art training, that express individuality and inventiveness, and are uncooked by cultural and artistic influences. Hosted by the Refinery ArtSpace in Nelson from May 10 until June 16 this year, entries are required by April 3. Lloyd Harwood ACN commu-
nity arts manager says “this is a national call for work by artists around the country who possibly find themselves creating outside the ‘mainstream’. We appreciate that entering work for a public show like this will be a big ask for those who may have never exhibited before, but we urge these artists to take this first brave step through this supportive initiative.” It’s believed this will be the first show of its kind for Nelson and Lloyd says he hopes it will attract the visionary work that he knows people are out there producing. Full details and entry forms are available on the Arts Council Nelson website – www.acn.org.nz/ raw---art-outside-the-edge

No longer will Waimea College teachers be driven to pull out their hair by students. Every day, six kiwis are diagnosed with a blood cancer or related condition, and every year students from Waimea College fund-raise by having their heads shaved to support Shave for a Cure. This year, to up the ante, the teachers have decided to to join the effort. Nine teachers altogether are getting involved on a serious level. In the past, contributions have been mainly internal, with coin buckets, but they felt it was about time they stepped it up a notch. “Cancer has affected very close family and friends for all of us, so we wanted to make a contribution,” says Tim Close, “and it was time for a haircut!” Last year the kids got a little too enthusiastic about cutting the teachers’ hair, so a more professional holder of the clippers was required. Professional hairdressers will be doing the deed this year, as Andrew’s hair needs to be dealt with a bit differently, with what he is doing. Andrew Gillespie, teacher at Waimea College, is not only shaving his hair, but is also donating his long locks to a wig maker in Dunedin, Freedom Wigs, who in turn donate the amount to a charity of choice, or to a person who is in need. The teachers have formed a team and people can contribute and sponsor those who have chosen to take the plunge and Shave for a Cure. The goal is to raise more than $3500 for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealands signature event. Paul Crofskey says he was inspired by what fellow staff member Andrew Gillespie had said earlier last year, “I was quite moved by it, and thought it was a great idea.” All the men were in agreement that it is vitally important for people to donate towards the causes. At this stage they have raised $887, just 25% of their goal and are seeking more support. Andrew Gillespie is in the lead with $220 so far and team captain Andy McHaffie is second with $151. “All donations are gratefully accepted!” says Andy. The donation page is easy to find, just follow the link https://www.tinyurl.com/shaveourhair click on the ‘Search’ icon and type in ‘Teachers of Waimea College’.

Did you know that up to 45% of heat in homes insulated to pre-2007 requirements is lost through the windows? Even if your home is double glazed, up to 31% of heat can still be lost. This heat loss can be minimised by installing quality window treatments in your home.
How do window treatments help your rooms selected keep the heat in?
Luxaflex blinds
As the temperature drops outside this cools the windows panes in your homes, the pocket of air that is close to the window panes then becomes cooler. A characteristic of cool air is that it’s heavier than warm air, so as this cooled air sinks, it is replenished by the warmer air from other areas of your room. The effect of this is a circulating air current that cools down the entire room. Window treatments are designed to hold (trap) the air between the window and the curtain or blind, to prevent this circulating air current from developing and cooling down your room.

Students embark on epic experience
*To spend on STIHL ac es ories. certainly hope that it sows the seed for future exchanges. I’m looking forward to sharing the experience with these guys and seeing their response to the full china experience. It is important that kids get their eyes opened to the rest of the world.” Nelson Boys College student Sam Ancell says that the interview process was a bit scary, walking into a room like that, but found
it ok. “What I’m probably looking forward to the most is trying the different food!” Formal dinners are planned, with the students having the opportunity to present their musical talents to the hosts. Barbara Markland, president of the Nelson branch of NZCFS, says, “they are all really talented kids, they are really excited about it, and we are hoping that the exchange will be reciprocated.”
Participants had to cover costs for passports, visas, travel insurance and spending money, while flights were supported by the society’s yearly grant from Nelson City Council and a benefaction from NZCFS patron Simon Deng Li, both of which helped tremendously with funding the project. Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese says, “The exchange has an important role in developing Nelson’s Sister

Six months ago the Nelson branch of the New Zealand China Friendship Society put forward an idea to give six students the opportunity to travel to Nelson’s Sister City Yangjiang in Guangdong Province, and experience life as a student of a 3600 pupil-strong boarding school. Yangjiang boasts a population of 2.71 million and is one of the most popular coastal tourist cities in China. With its rich maritime history and beautiful seaside scenery, the city has been named the National Garden City and the Hometown of Kites. Colleges from all over the Nelson region were notified of the experience on offer and invited pupils to apply for a spot in the group, with an interview process held. The organisers were looking for year 12 and 13 students who had a strong interest in the visual and performing arts area. “As it is an arts and culture experience, it was important that the students’ strengths lay in that field,” says organiser and chaperone Jane Lister. Jane, along with her husband Ian, will be accompanying the students on the ten day trip, leaving on April 17, where they will all be staying in the teachers’ dorms of the boarding school at Guangdong Liangyang senior high school. “It is the first time for this particular exchange,” says Jane, “we

Management for your peace of mind
NOW AT: 243 Queen St, Richmond
www.bolitho.co.nz Earlier this year Bolitho Property Management moved into new custom-made offices right opposite Sundial Square in the heart of Richmond. Locals may remember Number One Shoes occupying a huge shop here but won’t recognise anything of the inside after the new fit-out with modern, light and airy spaces that Terry Bolitho’s building team have created.
“We had completely outgrown our offices around the corner in Cambridge Street, so with another Property Manager joining the expanding team the time was right to create an upmarket office with space for growth” says Business Development Manager Tim Monck-Mason. They now have beautiful glass-sided offices with three meeting rooms for greeting customers and room
for future growth. “The only way forward was to future-proof it, and that’s what Terry Bolitho has done. He’s used his background in building and his relationships with designers, builders, plumbers, electricians - even photographers and graphic artists to create something rather special. “It’s something we’re all very proud of ” says Tim. Bolitho’s are now the region’s
leading, independent Property Managers and needed a high profile base to work from. “We are out around the region a lot, but it’s great to have a good work space to come back to and greet clients”. “There are many factors leading to our growth and now we can add a higher public profile right in the heart of Richmond.” Their unique Rent Guarantee is another big attraction. “Our
message to owners is - We pay your rent if your tenant doesn’t guaranteed, and that really puts our money where our mouth is” says Tim. “It’s a reflection of the strong company values instilled by owners Terry and Shona Bolitho “We believe in taking responsibility for our actions” says Terry, “hence we take responsibility for ensuring owners receive their rent each month, on time.

Ph: 544 1782 We can do this simply because our Property Managers look after far less properties than is usual in the industry so have the time to do things properly, according to our strict procedures, and on time.” Bolitho’s philosophy is to put owners first in everything they do. This means continually improving their systems and processes to ensure they produce consistently good outcomes. Terry Bolitho says “our goal is, that after managing a property for a number of years, we are able to hand it back to the owner in the same condition or better than when we received it.” Tenants love Bolitho’s ‘no letting fees policy’, the high standard of
presentation of homes, and their proactive Meth Management programme. Tim points out that tenants object to paying a week’s rent as a fee to the letting agent and that this is currently in the political arena with strong indication it will be banned, “but we have never charged a letting fee, believing it’s simply unfair and puts tenants off looking at properties”. Meth Management is also very current and again Bolitho are leaders in our region with a Meth Management programme that offers both the owners and tenants reassurance. “Most insurance companies now insist that baseline tests are done be-
fore and after each tenancy, so that should a claim ever be made it can be shown who had occupancy at the time. Plus, our tenants, especially those with small children, will insist a property is tested so they know it’s safe”. It is with the Bolitho team’s vast experience in property maintenances, tenant management, and property investment, that they are able to deliver exceptional results for their owners. If you are looking for a property management company that cares and that you can trust with your rental property, contact Tim Monck- Mason to discuss how they can help you to achieve great results.

Big Fish-Big Prizes Dominik Berghamer Recently the Dawnbreakers Fishing Club held their annual Snapper Cup competition. The event was postponed because of weather conditions, but was still enjoyed by 100 members who entered and 97 fish were caught. The heaviest snapper was pulled in by Kevin Bannan at 10.620kg and the prize for the heaviest snapper (junior) went to Ollie Meek with a fish of 5.260kg. A big thank you to our sponsors, Big Blue Dive and Fish, Fluid Electronics, DNA boats, Placemakers, Lowrance and Richmond Aquatic Centre who altogether provided over $10,000 of prizes. There were a lot of very happy faces and it was nice to see some new members taking home their share of the bounty. Some of us
did not have any luck fishing, but were privileged to have dolphins put on a show. Now it is time to turn the corner, the seasons are on the change again, which means the fish are moving around. There are reports of snapper being caught, though patchy, and gurnard, another great tasting table fish, are in a large number around the province. However, there is still good fishing to be had, if you end up in the right place at the right time. We have two great events coming up. Okiwi Bay weekend 7and 8 April and D’Urville Island weekend 11 to 13 May. So, members, don’t let the cooler weather put you off. Rug up and get amongst it for the start of our autumn season. Anyone interested, please log into www.dawnbreakers.co.nz for more information.
Fishing Hint: Try drift fishing more often. The reason is that there is no noise from the anchor chain. Just think about it from the fish’s point of view. Water conducts noise far more efficiently than air, and it also magnifies it. Snapper react to noise, which is why you often won’t catch anything until you have been sitting at anchor for a while.

The very popular Positive Ageing Expo is this year celebrating its tenth anniversary! The annual event, which began in 2008, has grown significantly and now regularly attracts crowds of more than 2000 people. On April 6th, thousands of people are again expected to flock to the Headingly Centre for the showcase of recre-
training, in 1979 Kevin made the jump across the Strait and began work in Nelson, where he remained for the rest of his lengthy career. “I loved the diversity of the job and the people, yeah, especially the people,” he says. Over his time there have been plenty of pranks in the
tight-knit workplace, one saw a workmate’s bike hitch a ride to Wellington and back. Near misses have also played a role, with the weather generally the cause. “We’ve been out in all sorts of weather when it’s been affecting the equipment because of the adverse condi-
tions,” he says. For now, Kevin’s pleased to be avoiding those challenges and is instead enjoying getting stuck into unfinished renovations on his Wakefield house. “I love living out here. It’s laidback and I’ve got plenty of land around me.”

If you’ve flown in or out of Nelson over the last half a century, chances are Kevin Walker’s played a pivotal role in your aircraft’s ability to use the airport. Knocking off for the final time on January 12 this year, Kevin retired after a 49-year career as a technician with the Airways Corporation. Moving from his native Northland, straight out of high school to begin work as a technician in Wellington, Kevin said while he was interested in aviation as a kid he had more of an interest in “the radio and electronic side of things”. Immediately serving a cadetship, some early challenges of the role were completing the associated qualifications. “We’d work as part of training but also go to Petone Institute of Technology for block courses,” says Kevin. As a technician his role was to look after navigational aids, the control tower, radios and runway lights. “Anything electronic or electrical, you’re responsible for it,” says Kevin. friday 6 april headingly centre richmond 10am - 3pm active, more often). There will also be a wide range of seminars and demonstrations and a chance to have a go at activities such as e-bikes (available all day), a Legends Vitality Fitness Class, and mindfulness activities. Entertainment on the day will include a marching group and a ukulele performance. The popularity of the Positive Ageing Expo “is due to the huge range of activities under one roof at one time,” says Mike. “A whole raft of information can be disseminated in one day and it means you don’t have to navigate your way through websites or phone books— you can chat directly with stallholders and service providers.” “The event allows people to come along and have face-to-face discussions with a whole lot of groups and service providers. The stallholders are there to provide information, and it means there are opportunities for people to find out things as broad as banking or financial information, through to the many different clubs and activities they can get involved in themselves. It’s about delivery of service, but also people may want to get into volunteering or utilising the skills they already have.” For example, event attendees “can have a conversation with the Nature Bird Recovery group about the work they do and the projects they have been involved in”, says Mike. “Often it’s interesting for people to know where the tracks are, see the results of work that’s been done, and potentially get involved at some point. It’s about making sure people’s skills are being used, that they are active and engaged in the community.” The Menzshed is another great example “in which people’s skills in carpentry and engineering can be used in the community”. The Positive Ageing Expo starts at 10am with an opening address from the Minister for Seniors the Hon Tracey Martin, followed by the presentation ‘Get Scam Savvy’ delivered by Fraud Education Manager with the Commission for

Financial Capability, Bronwyn Groot. Bronwyn is an expert on frauds—with multiple awards to back it up and great stories to share. “There is also an associated Nelson event on Thursday, April 5th, between 2pm and 3.30 pm in the Trafalgar Pavilion, where our Expo presenter Bronwyn will talk about being scam savvy,” says Mike. “Age Concern will also be
showcasing the Age Connect Project, with a focus on how to keep better socially connected and opportunities for tech upskilling for people who are unsure where to start.” The event has also received some great feedback from stallholders. “In particular, community groups often say they have volunteers who came to the expo and have since got involved in their activity,” says

This obviously adds to the quality of their life and it also means the services are meeting the needs of the people they are targeted to provide for.” People flock to the Positive Ageing Expo from all over the Top of the South. “Although it’s largely Nelson-Tasman residents who attend, we also get bus loads of people travelling to the event

from Golden Bay, Murchison and Marlborough. Although there’s plenty of parking at the Headingly Centre, “it’s important people remember they will need to navigate road works, as Headingly Lane runs off Lower Queen Street where upgrades are taking place.” There is also a free shuttle bus, leaving and returning every half hour from 9.30 am to 1.30 pm at the NBus Richmond final stop outside Pak n’Save on Talbot St. With so much on offer, The Pos-
itive Ageing Expo is definitely one to mark in your diary! The event is being held on Friday, April 6th, (10am to 3pm) at the Headingly Centre, Headingly Lane, Richmond. Admission is free, with complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits provided in the lovely café area. Lunch will also be available for purchase. Grand Working Trials Champion Zeba of Blackstone, flanked by her owner and handler Maria Frahm and judge Brian Robinson. Photo: Supplied.
Emily Beaumont Since the turn of the century, Maria Frahm has been training and competing dogs. “I’ve always been a bit dog crazy. I was inspired by watching other dog club members in various dog sports and was so inspired by what they could do with their dogs. I wanted to be able to train a dog and do that,” says Maria. She’s been able to do that and much more. Last October, Maria was the first person nationwide to ever be awarded the Tracking Trial excellent qualification. Achieving this title at the highest level possible with her dog Zeba of Blackstone, known as Ziva, Maria says to accomplish the title took years of practice.
Further success with Ziva followed when, just in February this year, together they were awarded the prestigious Grand Working Trials Champion while competing in Waipara. The pair is the second to have ever achieved this in New Zealand. Ziva was initially intended as a hunting dog for her husband, but with him away a lot Maria began to train her in tracking in 2013. “I never bonded with her to start with, she’s very timid. But now we really do understand each other and work as a team in some very adverse conditions and all over the country,” says Maria. No stranger to being on the podium at dog sports, Maria says winning Grand Working Tri-

als Champion made her very emotional as it’s her highest achievement ever. The sport, based on human scent tracking, excites Maria because “you’re not competing with anyone else, it’s just you and your dog”. At the top level they’re required to track a three-hour-old scent and sometimes in atrocious conditions over 6-800metres of varying terrain. When not competing or training dogs, Maria is kept busy on her lifestyle block in Hope, but her sights are firmly set on the National Dog Obedience Association’s Easter competition in Christchurch. “I’d like to place first with my two team dogs I’ve qualified, and achieve well for the region.”

The Amazing Race, Murchison style Amy Russ
While competing in a similar horse riding event in Greymouth, Kim Charles had the idea to bring the social experience to Murchison and, along with her husband Larry, put a call out to local property owners and volunteers to help host the event. “There was a lot of planning at home, most of the course was through peoples’ properties” says Kim, “but with everybody’s help it took about 3 days to organise.” Throughout the 16km
course across farmland and walkways there were eight clues, for roadblocks, where teams each had a task to complete before moving on to the next test. Marshalls were placed at each task to judge the competitors for best team work and best dressed. Eight teams started at four different points of the course to mix things up a little. The first team across the line, with a time of 2 hours 20 mins, was Blenheim-based team Forever Young, with Amalita Hay and her cousin Ela
walking away with a trophy, a ribbon and some prize money for their efforts. NBS sponsored some spot prizes for the other competitors, and trophies for best dressed and best teamwork were also up for grabs. “The costumes really made it,” says Kim, “it created a lot of interest with the locals and definitely turned a few heads.” Kathryn Mason, who was one of the judges, said the costumes were very impressive. “It was very hard to pick a fa-
vourite!” Local lasses Kelly Ahradsen and Tazmyn Charles took out the best dressed team trophy with their Lone Ranger and Tonto get-up, and Lindgren Sisters, Karen Schafer and Dorothy Hay, came in third against teams from Blenheim, West Coast, Nelson and Germany. “The event was actually really, really good, the challenges were great and very well laid out.” Karen says, “it was great fun and nice to ride off the roads. It would be fantastic as a yearly event.

Good enough for Mum Ryman Healthcare began with a vision to provide retirement living that was ‘good enough for mum.’ More than 30 years later that vision is a reality in 32 villages across New Zealand and Melbourne. The Ryman story began when company co-founder Kevin Hickman visited a resthome and didn’t like what he saw. There were shared bathrooms and little in the way of privacy or dignity for residents. He decided he would want something better for his mum. So, he teamed up with John Ryder to start a company with a very simple aim – the way Ryman Healthcare looked after people had to be “good enough for mum.’’ For more than 30 years Ryman’s villages have evolved to include resort-style amenities such as indoor swimming pools, bowling greens, cafés and hair and beauty salons. The way we care for people and the
systems we use are constantly refined. But our core aim remains the same. Everything we do must be “good enough for mum… or dad!” This core aim is certainly reflected at the Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village, so much so that sales advisor Debbie Edwards mum lives there too! The village offers the full continuum of care - from independent living in townhouses and apartments, assisted living in serviced apartments to resthome, hospital and dementia care. With beautifully landscaped gardens and magnificent views, enjoy a relaxed retirement in peaceful surroundings. If you enjoy socialising you might like to join in the Ryman Triple A exercise
classes, head down to the village centre for complimentary morning or afternoon tea with others, go along to a fine dining evening, or join in the many activities, events and outings on offer. There are also resort-style facilities to cater for every interest with a bowling green, hair and beauty salon, movie theatre, swimming pool and spa, library, and more. The village is conveniently located on Covent Drive with the Stoke shopping centre just 2km away and Richmond a 5 minute drive away. If you would like to visit the village and have a personal tour, please phone Debbie Edwards on 538 0882.

Wonder Women team really are super heroes Amy Russ Reporter
amy@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Paula’s Preschool staff and mums banded together this year to compete alongside hundreds of others in Saturday’s Relay for Life event held at Trafalgar Park. Team ‘Wonder Women’ managed to raise the most overall with $7146 and counting, and super mum Lizl Matthewson individually raising $4229 so far. Three of Paula’s Preschool staff members, Kelsea Sherratt, Sharon Gibson and Claire Taylor. Combined with Lynda Sutherland, Hunta Sutherland and Lucy Lithgow to form the team along with breast cancer survivors Lizl Matthewson and Vanessa Jones – a wonderful team of eight! Relay for Life is a 12-hour inspirational event in which the community comes together to fight back against cancer, celebrate with survivors and remember loved ones lost. Funds raised enable the Cancer Society to continue providing services to the local community. Sixty-five teams competed on Saturday and $69,697 has been raised to this time, with the final counts still to come. The staff at Paula’s wanted to sup-

not only Lizl and Vanessa but the Cancer Society as well. First time competitor Claire Taylor says, for her, it was amazing
to be a part of, “being here with the mums who are going through their battles, it feels great to be able to give back.” Kelsea Sherratt
says, “Both the ladies are a special part of the preschool family and have had their children in the preschool since they were little babies. We have followed their breast cancer journey and have supported them as much as possible through their tough times.” Sharon Gibson says that, personally, she has always wanted to do the relay, “a big part of it is that I wanted to support Vanessa and Lizl as well. It was an amazing day, a really good vibe.” Lizl was amazed at the togetherness of the staff at the preschool, “the team and the support from the school has been absolutely amazing. Not only through the staff being in the team and fundraising, and the owners donating, but also the fact that once again the school will be supporting my family through extra hours of care for my children as I am heading into surgery and recovery. We wanted to raise as much as we could for the Cancer Society, and I think we have done pretty well!” For every $2 that someone in Nelson/Tasman area has donated to the Wonder Women team, their name has gone into a draw to win vouchers and prizes from local businesses. Donations are still accepted, just go to www.relayforlife.org.nz.

This week I became ‘Father of the House’, or the longest continuous serving MP in our Parliament. I was the ‘Baby of the House’ for six years and much prefer the new title although it feels strange when 50 MP’s are older than I. The role does carry a special responsibility to ensure Parliament remembers its history and protects those freedoms that are so important to our democracy. This week 20 respected political and legal academics from the Universities of Auckland, Victoria, Canterbury and Otago
came out damning the Government’s electoral law changes that will enable party leaders to dismiss MP’s from Parliament. The professors of law say the Government is breaching the Bill of Rights, will weaken our democracy and will give party leaders too much power. The Bill is colloquially referred to as ‘Waka Jumping’. It goes much further than just applying to a MP who resigns from a party. The Bill enables a party leader to dismiss a MP if they criticise the party or vote differently. I am proud of being a National MP but my duty to our coun-
try and Nelson comes first. I crossed the floor to vote for a minimum wage for youth. I exposed financial wrong doing in the Druids, much to the discomfort of some senior National MPs. I would not have been able to do this if this Bill was the law then. It will have a chilling effect on all MP’s in our Parliament. This so-called Electoral Integrity Bill is justified on the basis that MP’s who switch parties are acting without integrity. This overlooks the fact that the founding members of all of New Zealand’s political parties,

including Labour and National, switched from other parties. Dissident MP’s like Matt Rata, Derek Quigley, Mel Courtney, Marilyn Waring, Jim Anderton, Winston Peters, Tariana Turia and most recently Hone Harawira represented a legitimate opinion. You do not have to agree with someone to agree with their right to disagree. The party hopping of the 1990’s was a product of the change to MMP. It is no reason to permanently change the accountability of MP’s away from voters to party leaders. Lead advocates for MMP like Rod Donald have
described previous similar Bills as draconian, obnoxious and anti-democratic. This Bill would be unconstitutional in Germany, the home of MMP. The Courts in Malaysia, Europe and PNG have thrown them out for breaching basic human rights. The only countries that have these laws are regimes like Zimbabwe and Pakistan. Freedom of speech and tolerating dissent are core Kiwi values. The right to hire and fire MP’s must stay with voters at the ballot box. Advt.

Queen Street/Wensley Road intersection closure Within the next two weeks, Queen Street Upgrade works will move into the area of the roundabout at Queen Street and Wensley Road. The roundabout will be closed to most traffic while contractor Downer lays a new stormwater pipe through the roundabout. The work is expected to take several days. Vehicles will still be able to exit the Mall/Warehouse carpark turning left onto Queen Street. The intersection will be open for Easter weekend.
Extended closure from mid-April In mid to late April the Queen Street/Wensley Road intersection will close again - this time for an extended period (about six weeks) to carry out the rest of the upgrade works in this area. This will be a challenging time, as both Queen Street entrances to the Richmond Mall/Warehouse carpark will be closed. We've been working with the carpark’s owners to manage the disruption, particularly the likely effect on traffic flows in Talbot Street when it becomes the only entry and exit point into the carpark. We have carried out traffic counts to gather data on the traffic movements in and out of the carpark and traffic modelling to assess the likely effects of the closure. Talbot Street will come under pressure during this period, and we will be making temporary changes to the street to minimise this as much as we can, including: • a small temporary roundabout on Talbot Street at the middle entry/exit to the carpark to better manage traffic flows in and out • removal of several parking spaces on Talbot Street to improve visibility • directing the contractor who manages our traffic light signals to monitor traffic flows and alter the timing of the lights if necessary.

We do expect there to be queues at peak times, and we ask everyone to use alternative routes as much as possible.

Work to widen Richmond’s Bateup Road and provide a shared walkway/cycleway will begin before the end of March. The project will make Bateup Road safer for all users and help cater for increased traffic resulting from growth in the area. The road and footpaths will be made wider from Three Brothers Corner to Wensley Road, and a shared walkway/cycleway will be created. A roadside drain will be replaced with piped stormwater and some stormwater storage chambers. The work will require Bateup Road to be reduced to one lane for its entire length during construction. The project is due for completion by Christmas 2018. We appreciate this is going to be a lengthy period of construction for residents and others who use Bateup Road and we thank you in advance for your patience.
