Having a ball at Garin College A famous quote from The Great Gatsby read: “I like large parties. They’re so intimate. At small parties there isn’t any privacy”. And for Garin College students there was no party larger than Saturday night’s school ball, which has been labelled as a year highlight by one of the students on its organising committee.

The Great Gastby-themed ball had all the glitz and glamour of the 2013 film. Student Clare Sanders says it was a great evening enjoyed by all. “Everyone we spoke to had such positive feedback and we’re so happy with the outcome,” she says. “It’s just getting dressed up for an occasion that you usu-

Pet cat caught in gin trap Google sends tramper FROM PAGE 1 There’s always a chance a child could potentially come across it and cause some damage. It is my belief that the person who has set this type of trap has acted with complete disregard for safety of animals and has certainly acted illegally by setting the trap.” Hope School principal David Pritchard believed the cat had travelled some distance before getting onto the school grounds but says the findings were “not flash” for a

school. “They’re illegal for a start. Thank goodness it happened on the weekend. It wouldn’t have been flash if it was found during school time.” The owner of the cat and the owner of the trap are yet to be indentified and Andy was hoping to hear from both parties, although that task can be difficult. The cat will be taken to the SPCA this week while the search for the owner continues. It has to learn to walk again and has broken teeth from trying to chew its way out of the trap.

The beauty of the Abel Tasman National Park is one of the region’s great drawcards, but soon you won’t even have to visit the region to see it. Internet giant Google is taking Google Street View off road on the Abel Tasman Coast Track before continuing onwards to the Heaphy Track. The Department of Conservation says its pleased to be working with Google to bring the Great Walks to life on the web. “This is the first time this technology has been seen in New Zealand and DOC

is really pleased to welcome Google Street View and the Street View Trekker on the Abel Tasman Coast Track”, says DOC’s Rudy Tetteroo. Google Maps Product Manager, Nabil Naghdy, says the Trekker is Google’s newest Street View camera platform; an 18 kilogram backpack equipped with 15 fivemegapixel cameras that gather images as it goes. The camera system is specially designed to capture imagery in remote places or places only accessible on foot.

Do you suffer with hay fever, runny nose or itchy eyes? Quercetin is a plant pigment found in many foods and is known as a powerful bioflavonoid with natural anti-inflammatory properties. Studies have shown that Quercetin may support the body's natural responses to allergies and support clear airways in the head and chest.

Bars to close at 1.30am, ‘too harsh’ A proposal to close all bars in Tasman by 1.30am has bar owners fuming with one saying it could cost him 20 per cent of his trade. Tasman District Council – like all councils around New Zealand – have been working with stakeholders to develop a local alcohol policy after the responsibility was handed to them by central government last year. TDC’s draft policy was released in July and submissions on it close at the end of the month. It states that bars should close at 1.30am, unless they’re in a residential area, then they must stop serving alcohol at 11pm. The policy would also mean restaurants would have to stop serving at 12 midnight. Currently, some bars in Tasman are licensed to 3am. Richmond’s Star & Garter owner Tony Crosbie, who also owns two pubs in Motueka, believes he will lose up to 20 per cent of his trade if the policy comes into effect. Tony, who is also an executive member of the hospitality association, has already collected 100 submissions backing his views. “I might be the last bar to finish but we have a very good relationship with taxis and at 1:30am there will

Queen St building NEWS in brief to come down

MISSING MAN: Police are seeking sightings of a West Coast man who has been reported missing. Andrew Ross White, aged 55, from Karamea was last seen entering the Heaphy Track from the Takaka end on August 6. Mr White is European, about 175cm tall, of thin build with grey hair and balding on top. He wears blueframed glasses and was likely to be wearing a baseball cap. Police would like to speak with anyone who has been on the Heaphy Track since 6 August and anyone who may have seen or spoken with Mr White, either in Takaka or elsewhere.

Phillip Rollo Reporter

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz Another building deemed to be earthquake prone will be brought down. The two storey former Network Tasman building on Queen St, which is still owned by the company but was being leased by engineering firm Montgomery Watson, is already being dismantled, while the three storey building next door will undergo a structural upgrade. A Network Tasman spokesperson says an assessment was completed early last year and the results concluded that it only met 16 per cent of the new national building standard. It appears likely that a new building will replace the existing one. “From that assessment it was determined it had to come down. It’s a 1937 building and the cost of strengthening it versus the cost of a new development were not similar but it was felt that it was better to wait for a new tenant in a new building,”

A building owned by Network Tasman will be brought down before the middle of September. Photo: Phillip Rollo. the spokesperson says. “Buildings have a life span like anything else and it does have its cost, there’s no doubt about that.” The demolition process is likely to take another month. Network Tasman was housed in the

building before moving out to Hope in 2005. The three storey building was not brought down as strengething it is more financially viable. “So it all depends on the engineering of them.”

RELIEF AT GUILTY VERDICT: Nelson Police are satisfied with the verdict reached by the jury in the trial of Murchison arsonist Colin Geoffrey Hayball. Colin was accused of lighting a series of forest fires near Tapawera last year, has been found guilty of arson. Detective senior sergeant Wayne McCoy says in his view the quick actions of the fire fighters responding to the fires saved lives and averted immense destruction to property. “The forestry industry is the backbone of the Nelson economy and many people’s livelihoods are reliant on it either directly or indirectly. A large fire could have been life-threatening.” Colin will be sentenced in September.

Kempthorne has four challengers Nominations have closed for this year’s Tasman District Council elections and there were few late surprises. Mayor Richard Kempthorne will campaign against four other contestants in the mayoral race while a late surge in Richmond means eight will contest just four seats. In the Waimea-Moutere ward the three incumbents won’t need to worry about campaigning, as they were the only three nominees and are assured to win back their seats. In Lakes-Murchison Stuart Bryant will face a fight for his seat with Glenhope resident Sue Wilson standing against him.

But the major focus of the election will be in the Richmond ward and for mayor where crowded fields should make the campaign interesting. In Richmond, incumbents Judene Edgar and Zane Mirfin will stand alongside former councillors Michael Higgins and Gordon Currie, former Nelson City councillor Alan Turley, Janine Pugh, Mark Greening, and John Cumpstone. Mayor Richard Kempthorne has been in the top job for two terms and the crowded field may just help him win a third. His strongest challenger at this stage appears to

Andrew Board Editor

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz be current Richmond councillor Kit Maling with Maxwell Clark, Gary Watson and Steve Richards the remaining candidates. Kit signalled his intention to stand months ago and has already put in a lot of ground work, door knocking across the district. Maxwell has battled the council over the land valuations at Lower Queen St, where he owns property, and will need to channel

that passion into other issues to be a serious contender. Gary Watson’s nomination raised a few eyebrows after standing and failing four times for mayor of Nelson. The Ruby Bay man and owner of Mainland TV will need to convince voters his push for Tasman mayor isn’t a case of second best. Steve Richards owns the Jester Cafe in Ruby Bay and is a former member of the McGillicuddy Serious Party. He will be considered a long-shot to win come October. Voting packs for the elections will be sent to each home from September 20 with voting closing on October 12.

Whitebait season gets underway The whitebait season is officially open, although like most years it is expected to be a slow start. The whitebait season runs from August 15 until November 30 and is allowed from 5am until 8pm, changing to 6am to 9pm when daylight savings comes in. Conservation minister Nick Smith was up at the crack of dawn on Thursday’s open day at

Anecdotal evidence suggests that in drought years, particularly when autumn is dry like this year, whitebait eggs are more likely to dry out before they hatch meaning catches are less.

Marijuana found on cycle trail A cyclist has been left with a “hardcase” story to tell after coming across a cultivated cannabis plant on a main cycle trail. Sheila Scott was cycling with some friends from Richmond to Stoke last week when she saw what looked like a healthy cannabis plant, fresh out of its pot and with a water gauge still stuck in the dirt around the plant. She says she couldn’t believe it. “At the time we thought ‘we should take a photo of this because it’s just unbelievable’. You don’t just go out for a ride and come across that on the cycleway.” She says the plant was around a metre high and half as wide. She says she recognised it straight away after her years working as a police officer. “My first thought was just disbelief really. I was 99 per cent sure it was what I thought it was so we called the police.” The plant most likely rolled off a

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz trailer and down the bank next to the trail says Sheila. It was around 50 metres past Lockwood Homes, on the Richmond Deviation. “You could tell it had been in a pot because the potting mix was root bound and it had the water meter still in the base of it.” When the police picked it up they confirmed it was indeed a cannabis plant and destroyed it. “I’m sure someone will be pissed off because they’re missing it but we just couldn’t leave it there,” she says. Finding a plant while cycling wasn’t a huge surprise to Sheila, but finding one on the main highway certainly was. “You’d expect it if you were biking up in the mountains and saw one but you don’t expect it on Nelson’s main cycleway do you?”

Bar owners/ managers want to keep the money rolling in, while parents want their kids home unharmed and safe. Business owners want their doorways clear of vomit and urine, cars undamaged, the list goes on. Just saying... Sharon May Patterson. No. Nelson is a tourist town heaps of tourists and visitors come to Nelson to party every year. The tourists don’t understand these rule. Bars and restaurants are a business why should we let stupid young idiots with no respect or self control ruin it for everyone else? The current problem all over NZ is caused by 1825 year olds still living at home with mum and dad not paying a cent for anything or lifting a finger to do anything and spending up large on alcohol and drugs while their parents are stupidly financially assisting them (by paying for everything) so they can continue to do so.... Come on parents wake up stop babying them and think about it... has a light gone on yet? 21st birthday cut them loose and cut them off financially bye bye time to go flatting time to be an adult. I live in a neighbourhood where every one looks after each other. We share for the good of all, different activities, food, plants or time. A working bee collected, cut, split and delivered my firewood. We have a recycling news paper read by four to five different neighbours. I put rubbish in my neighbours bin, they use my freezer. I make yummy cakes, my three old sheep get shorn. We have our own biking handyman, and a very special 85 year old

young mum, who is mum to all. Over summer one neighbour shares their kayaks, and as a group we converse at a swimming hole where we relax, laugh, and soak the problems of the world away. We have barbies and birthday teas. The little things they say and do makes you feel special, but mostly its a great feeling knowing friends are always there looking out for you. Beryl Lindup

I tell my children to be grateful for the meals put in front of them and they moan and wish they had something other that what’s on their plate. But my son Timo got onto a band-wagon about earning money. He began weeding gardens, filling in potholes, slashing gorse, selling cones. No one knew what he wanted the money for, but he earned a total of $130. I was rung and asked to pick him up at lunch time from Gran’s one day.

Along Gran’s veranda were pink and red balloons and inside, covering the table were my favorite treats. Chocolate, chips, fancy biscuits, chipolatas and popcorn. He said that he knew sometimes he was ungrateful and he just wanted to say thank you, plus give his mum a break from cooking dinner. Karen Garleton - Wakefield

Hospital supplies sent to Pacific A container load of used and repaired hospital equipment is heading out of Nelson and in to Aitutaki in the Cook Islands. An initative set up by the South Pacific Hospital Trust, who have been sending hospital equipment away since 2004, enabled used and unneeded supplies to be sourced from around the Top of the South. Graham Gardiner, a spokesperson for the trust, says the equipment will be used at six school dental clinics in Aitutaki. “Particularly they were after dental clinics. It’s amazing [the amount we’ve been able to source]. A lot of this has come from the DHB and rest homes,” he says. Because a lot of the equipment is used, it of-

We just do it as the need requires and a few years ago we did three shipments in the same year. “ Richmond Rotary Club was helping finance the Nelson to Auckland leg of the shipping while a handful of other businesses had helped support the effort, including Lift and Shift who are transporting the containers from Richmond to the port and West Meat and New World Stoke donating food for the after function while the Nelson Tongan Boys Kava Cub also contributed during the packing.

Cook book recipes still flowing in

They say the way to our hearts is definitely through our stomachs and that couldn’t be more true for Nelsonians says Richmond Mall manager Belinda de Clercq who has been overwhelmed at the response to the mall’s recipe search. She says the amount of nostalgia, sentiment and great photos that have accompanied recipe entries into the 40th anniversary celebration book has been amazing and proves that family and food go hand in hand. While the search is on for all recipes, Belinda says it could almost be the search for Nelson’s sweetest tooth with the amount of entries into desserts, sweets and party food but there has been a great mix of mains, sauces and drinks too. “The response has been amazing, and we encourage the public to keep them coming.” Any entry handed in before next Friday will also go in the draw to win a food processor, which has been kindly donat-

The group will visit their sponsor child in the village of Cbu, and have held several events to help raise the money to get there. A holiday programme, childrens market day and a quiz night that featured in the Waimea Weekly, have so far contributed more than $4,500 to the cause. Shooting a crime scene He used to run a small commercial photography business, focusing on the “pretty stuff ” in life; glamour, fashion, weddings, the list goes on. But now Rob Sorensen’s subjects involve dead bodies, victims of assault and fatal car accidents. Rob is the only full-time forensic photographer for Nelson Police and is one of just 50 nationwide – and it’s certainly not a job for the faint of heart, something he even admits himself. “Some people say ‘oh I’d love to be a forensic photographer’ but in reality they probably wouldn’t,” says Rob. “Homicides can be quite horrific but it’s not just the scene but the mortuary process afterwards, photographing the entire procedure. If they’ve got a lot of injuries well you have to photograph all of them. But you can’t take it home, you have to be able to let it go and you can’t be emotionally involved.” The job of a forensic photographer involves recording a scene as accurately as possi-

I went to see him two days later and he was up in bed talking, and two days after that I saw him walking in the street. I have been to jobs where people have died from one stab wound and here he was stabbed numerous times and being up and about. Electrical company lends a hand

Two local businesses have rallied together to support a local couple that missed out on a solar water heating system when the company sponsoring the prize went under. Rowan Dron Electrical, which is based in Brightwater, stepped in to help the couple with the support of Active Electrical Suppliers, after JDT Build was placed in liqui-

dation earlier this year. Rowan Dron, who was told about the couple’s predicament by a friend, decided to supply a new solar power system saying people are often “short changed” in life. “I know what it’s like when people don’t honour their word and I felt like they’ve had a rough deal. We’re a Nelson company and

these are Nelson people.” The prize was originally won at a home and garden show in 2011 and was intended to be used on their new house that was about to be built. The system has been installed already and will be used once the build is complete. Rowan explains that the initial prize won

was now “old technology” whereas the new system can supply solar power rather than just heating the water. “The good thing with this is it does all your power, not just your hot water system. The one they won was $7000 and this system was probably a bit more. They were rapt with the outcome.”

A regional dance festival featuring all of the local secondary schools is being held this Thursday at the Theatre Royal. The Vast Dance Festival was created last year to showcase what is happening in dance education both curricular and extra-curricular. Waimea College arts coordinator Pauline Farley says there will be “all sorts” of dancing at the event, ranging from Pacific Island themed dancing through to traditional ballet and jazz.

“There’s hip-hop, contemporary, everything. This has been their class project for the last term really, working on pieces and a lot they have choreographed themselves,” she says. Pauline says the standard is extremely high and recommends the public to check out the variety that all of the schools will be showcasing with 25 dancers taking part in total. Tickets for the 7pm show can be purchased from the Theatre Royal Box Office by calling 548 3840.

Top tipper gives prize to charity

Councillor Judene Edgar has given her rugby tipping prize to the Nelson Hospice. Judene, who beat a host of local business people in a competition where each entrant had to guess the winner of every Super 15 fixture, says she always intended to give the prize to charity if she had won. The prize, which is $500 worth of free advertising in Waimea Weekly will now be used by Nelson Hospice, even though local body elections are coming up. “When I first entered I did make a vow that if I won I’d donate the voucher to charity and despite the timing where I will be paying for advertising I wanted to stay true to that,” she says. “The Hospice touches everyone’s lives and they have huge funding shortfalls and need a lot of significant contributions from the public.”

You’re invited to sing

Men in Accord are a relaxed and friendly men’s a-cappella, barbershop, four part harmony chorus, based in the Nelson and Tasman area. Their current members are from all walks of life and professions; they even have a singing policeman! They rehearse most Tuesday nights at Club Waimea starting at 7pm and give a warm welcome to all men who have an interest in singing four part harmony. They encourage anyone to come along and join them. You’ll be invited to sing with them; however, doing so is not a requirement. If you’d prefer to just listen, that’s fine too Men in Accord rehearsals are friendly and fun and usually start with a few vocal warm-ups and then are generally focused on learning new songs or improving performance of the existing repertoire. The rehearsals can also be tailored to suit newcomers. Men in Accord are lucky to have a number of experienced members with good musical knowledge who pass on valuable techniques

Wakefield School Principal, Peter Verstappen gives chess competitors some strategy tips at the start of a lunchtime competition.

Wakefield School students competed in a school chess tournament a few weeks ago in order to choose a team for the inter-school tournament, which took place on August 8 at Nayland School. The inter-school tournament was extremely successful with the students all playing six games each. There were about 150 children in total from around the area that took part in the tournament and Wakefield School was placed third overall.

Each class gets half an hour of tennis a week for four weeks. Sports coordinator, Kathy Ameen, says, “The Grasshoppers tennis programme is also great for helping develop upper body strength and agility as well as improving eye-hand co-ordination.” Ngarie Calder is the tennis coach. She is part of the Wakefield Tennis Club. Ngarie has been teaching tennis for over 10 years. Everyone thinks it’s a lot of fun!

Don’t forget Daffodil Day is next Friday, August 30. Dress in something yellow and carry your gold donations in your pockets for this fundraiser and awareness day. The Cancer Society will be holding a stall in the village

$ the jar?’, a library scavenger hunt and ‘match the book to the staff member’. On Thursday night the school held a ‘bedtime stories with a special guest’ event and on Friday, a parade took place where everyone dressed up as their favourite book character. Kacey McNamara, Sarah Ducray, Jessica Taylor Wakefield school librarian Kathy Ameen says, Wakefield School “The whole week is centred around reading and Wakefield school recently celebrated ‘Book the wonderful world that reading and books Week’, and students were able to explore the can open up to all.” There was also a Scholasworld of books. A lot of interesting competi- tic book fair with fiction and non-fiction book tions were held, and many wonderful prizes displays and the opportunity to purchase books were won. Competitions included, guessing as well. The theme for the Book Fair was ‘Story the weight of a book, ‘how many lollies are in Lab and Science’.

Video Ezy on the move Video Ezy Wakefield has closed its doors, but just a few doors down in Brightwater owner Paul Doorman will soon reopen them. The decision to close the Wakefield premises wasn’t made lightly, but Paul has had to make the move in order to continue providing the area with their movie fix. With the licence to supply residents from Hope through to Murchison, Paul decided the business would be better off in the middle of his catchment area, with a view to being more accessible, to more customers. While his loyal Wakefield customers won’t mind the five minute drive to

pick out their movies, there is some good news to sweeten the deal. Paul will be setting up a drop box in Wakefield Village, so that local customers can simply return their rentals there instead of going to Brightwater. Paul says he is happy to provide the service to make visiting Video Ezy in Brightwater more convenient. “I welcome all of my existing customers to visit me at the new store, and look forward to meeting more of the people in Brightwater and the surrounding area.” Visit Paul at Video Ezy, now based in Brightwater in on the corner of the new HQ complex, Ellis St.

DON’T BE SUCKED IN Are you sick of telemarketers and pushy salesmen endless harassing you at all hours to put in a heat recovery system? Don’t be fooled, flashy adds and celebrity spokesman doesn’t mean you are getting the best for your dollar, in fact you could be spending thousands more than you have to. Breaking the Myth, what is a heat recover system? Positive Pressure ventilation systems draw fresher, drier air into your home from either the roof cavity or outside. This air is then passed through a high efficiency filter and introduced into your home. This introduced air forces out the moist, stale air that causes condensation, mould and mildew. This dryer air makes is then easier to heat, making your existing heating more efficient. There are a range of options when choosing a system, from basic to elaborate systems that include heat transfer systems or even intergrated heat pumps. This Spring why not talk to Rowan Dron Electrical first. Rowan and the team have been installing positive ventilation systems for years and will give you straight up, honest advice about what will suit your house best. Ask about their hypo allergenic filters that reduce pollen in the air.

One of Tasman’s most well known sign writers is normally too busy helping other local businesses look at their image to think about his own, but Steve Foote has made a few changes and now his business has a brand new look of its own. They are now based out of a new premises on the main street of Brightwater. While Footie Signs and Designs may be just a few doors down from its old home on Ellis St, shifting the business has been a welcome change, as it continues to grow from strength to strength with more locals putting their trust in Footie Signs than ever before. The business offers a range of sign writing services, from flat panel signs, ve-

hicles, business cards, logo design, vintage sign repairs, hand painted signs, banners, and more, with no job to big or too small for the team to take on. The new shop can be found directly tucked behind the Loggers Shop, and is a great place to be doing business says Steve, who has been in the new spot for two months now. It’s warm, bright, with easy access car parking, and there is plenty of space for Gemma Reed, a new but familiar member of the team who is back on board, and Steve’s wife Lisa who frequently helps out with the business. The wildly successful sign writing venture

Right: The new Footie Signs & Designs behind the Loggers Shop in Brightwater. officially began six years ago, but for Steve the journey really began when he was still at school. He was just 16 when he saw a sign writer hand painting a sign on a wall, and it has remained his inspiration for many years. “When I was at college, biking home from school one day, I saw a sign writer hand painting a wall. I was mesmerized and I thought ‘I want to do that’. At the time there weren’t any jobs, but I was still fascinated and I basically taught myself how to do it. Later on I made friends with a local sign writer who gave me an old brush and he sent me on my way.” It is this commitment to quality that Footie Signs and Designs has built such a great name and reputation in the industry. The attention to detail and relationships Steve is able to build with each customer is what he prides himself on, so it is little wonder that around 70% of his customers are return clients.

Steve has even found a niche place in the market for supplying the forestry industry with safety signage, and is now a major supplier of team and work uniform apparel for a range of different industries. If you are a business owner who is thinking about branding, changing a logo or simply wants professional advice

on how to go about overhauling a company image, Footie Signs and Designs is a one stop shop that can take care of all of the above. “We don’t just do flat panel signage. Clothing is big part of the business, point of sale material, pull up banners, forestry machinery. A huge part of the business is safety signage for the logging and engineering industry. And I’m quite proud of that fact. But we can do anything from car wraps, kids motorbike graphics, for sale signs, anything.” Now that they are well and truly moved in to their new home, if you haven’t called in to Footie Signs and Designs at their new home, new and existing customers are invited to call in, say hello and check out the new space. Juniors tackle out of town talent Nelson’s top young tennis talent had to battle with plenty of out-of-towners in the Nelson Junior Winter Open over the weekend. More than a third of the players were from out of Nelson, giving our local talent a run for their money. Luke InnesWalker stepped up to the play joining his brother Sam in the 10 boys, giving a brave performance as the only eight boys entry. Sam Innes-Walker played the tournament of his life beating top seed Liam Adams in the quarters and winning the final against Finlay Emslie-Robson from Canterbury. Marshall Hore, number two seed, played solid and well controlled tennis getting through to the play off for third and fourth losing to Oliver Molloy. It was a Nelson final in the 10 year girls, with Farrah Richards beating Olivia Yankov-Reid. Despite second place, Olivia showed amazing form in her first ever tennis tournament. Ryan Mairs of Upper Moutere went down to the top seen in the first round then fought back, wining all his remaining games to take the 10 boys plate final. His sister Nicole met Holly Mace in a hard hitting 14/16 girls final, both girls playing great tennis. Holly has gone from strength to strength over the past

Waimea College

Under 15 Tournament Team 2013 The Golden Edge Waimea College under-15 rugby team will look to end its already successful season on another high note when it heads to Christchurch for a South Island co-educational tournament. Waimea College has a strong history that this competition, winning in 2010 and being involved for the past ten years. The tournament, which features close to 30 of the top co-ed schools in the South Island is seen as an important stepping stone onto the first XV not only for on the field development but learning to travel and play away from home. Gus Shirley, the teacher in charge of the trip, says the fact the opposition also consists of co-ed schools, it’s a good indicator for the players to see where they are at on a South Island level. “It’s a great chance to test ourselves against

other schools similar to us but from around New Zealand. They’re doing really well in the local competition, coming second and beating Marlborough Boys College just the other day, so they’re going pretty good.” Waimea will play up to six games during the three day tournament and looking back at the team’s run over the past ten years Gus is confident that they will perform well again. “Generally we’ve been in the top four, but it is hard to say because there are 26 teams confirmed this year. four is definitelty the goal and anything after that will be a bonus. Because there are at least five games in three days it means we have to rely on the whole squad too.” The Waimea College team will stay at the same accomodation that the first XV does when it travels to Christchurch for the Press Cup and Gus says this tournament experience will give the players a taste of what is to come if they carry on playing rugby at the school, especially when factoring in that most of the 2010 winning side now makes up the bulk of the first XV. “This is definitely a stepping stone for the first XV. It’s good for them to travel and see what it’s like when they’re away from home. They eat where the first XV eat, they’re kitted out in team jackets too so it all feels a bit more special to these players.” The team would like to thank all of their supporters, and particularly the player sponsors featured below.

Broadgreen previously had bragging rights with a narrow win in their last outing and the first quarter looked as if the game would go down to the wire when the teams could not be separated at the first break. Waimea Intermediate looked hungry in the second quarter and “everything began to fall into place”. Coach, Maree Holland says her girls have a great attitude and had improved so much during the season. Waimea’s shooting has came along in leaps and bounds in the last three weeks and Saturday’s game was by far, their best team effort for the sea-

Carol Cook

Netball Reporter editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz son. By half time Waimea Intermediate had a solid 10-5 lead as they established a better flow through court despite the hard work by Broadgreen’s Ashleigh van Staden and Jamie Harris. Waimea’s game lifted in the second half when everything fell their way. Waimea’s transition was swift as they converted their hard fought turnover ball. Flo McIntyre made an immediate impact when she was introduced at centre for Waimea, she was the preverbal hunter for the mid court intercept (picking up three in third quarter) Flo ensured there was

a steady stream of ball into her goal shoot, Maddi Holland. Maddi had a stellar shooting game where returned commendable statistics. Waimea’s circle defenders Hannah Twin and Emma Gordon proved to be a formidable lineup as they continued to apply pressure to Broadgreen’s shooters, Ashleigh Green and Hannah Batchelor. Ashleigh dominated the shooting circle and displayed a good understanding of the game. Kim Brookman put in a sterling effort for Broadgreen – she was great on “D” in the first half at wing defence and fed her shooters intelligently when she went to wing attack in the second half. The final score was a 29-11 win to Waimea Wahines.

The Richmond School rippa rugby team, representing Tasman, flew to Wellington to compete at a national competition over the weekend.

Rippa team back at nationals Richmond School’s rippa rugby team was off representing Tasman yet again at a national competition. Richmond, who have now won the local competition three years running, were one of 20 teams competing at Wellington’s Wakefield Park this week for the annual Rippa Rugby Championship. Following the first day of sched-

uled games, the 20 teams came together for some planned informal games only to be surprised to find 20 All Blacks join them to take part in a variety of activities including a rippa kids against the All Blacks one-off game. Richmond lost its quarter final after going through pool play with three wins and one loss.

Waimea to take on defending champs Super Liquor Waimea Old Boys are one game closer to making it a club three-peat, beating Riwaka 10-7 in the division two semi final on Saturday, booking a spot in the final against defending champions Murchison. With the division one side and the women’s team winning championships this year, Waimea Old Boys could complete a hat-trick of trophies if the team can get up in Murchison. Team manager Brent Stewart, who took over the coaching reigns for the weekend, says his side is confident but is well aware of what Murchison possess. “We’re rapt to be here. It wasn’t a pretty semi final and we’re certainly focussed on the prize this weekend,” he says. “They’re a formidable side and they came out all guns blazing at the start so we’ll just have to combat the onslaught and block out the crowd. This is what we’ve been aiming for all year.” Waimea Old Boys and Murchison finished just one point apart at the

top of the division two standings and head-to-head they have beaten each other once already this season. “We are pretty well even matched but finals rugby is another step up. We’ve got a lot of younger guys who haven’t played finals football before so we’ll have to rely on the experienced heads.” With the senior A side and the women’s team both finished for the season Brent admits the banter has died down but the pressure was still there to be the third and final team to win a championship. Another large crowd is expected for the clash with the entire Murchison town getting behind their rugby team, but Brent was hoping to get some more Waimea fans down there to cheer the visitors on. “We’re trying to put on a second bus for supporters if we can get the right numbers.” To express interest in traveling to Murchison, contact club secretary Aleisha Hart on 027 600 0667.

Invitational side wins away Julia Law A Waimea Olds Boys invitational women’s team has managed to upstage a Cantebury side 55-7, capping off the season on another high note. After only a couple of weeks of training the team which features Waimea Old Boys, Stoke and Riwaka players, headed off to

SG

Christchurch to play the Canterbury Metro Secondary Schools representative side. Waimea started with a flourish as outstanding fullback Zoe Johnson scored a runaway within the first five minutes. As the game continued on, the weather closed in too but Waimea still continued to rack up points. As the points tally rose, so did the penalty

SG

count and Waimea found themselves playing with just 14 women at the end of the first half. Canterbury Metro came out with all guns blazing in the second half, surprising Waimea and keeping them on defence for the first 10 minutes. However, slowly but surely the team rallied and began to gain territory and possession once more.

With some well placed kicks, domination in the line outs great running, Waimea Invitational finished the game with a comfortable win of 55-7. It was a great result and a great weekend was had by all. The players and management would like to extend a big thank you to all families, supporters and sponsors who played their part in making this trip possible.

Roadside Spraying

Notice of intention to grant a lease to part of the Brightwater Recreation Reserve

Contractors employed by New Zealand Transport Agency undertake an ongoing vegetation control programme to ensure that roadside vegetation does not affect the safety or operation of the region’s state highway network. This programme includes the spraying of chemical herbicides including the following active ingredients: Glyphosate, Metsulfuron, Terbuthylazine and Triclopyr. Persons wishing to register their property as a ‘no-spray’ zone, which requires a commitment to maintain a property’s highways frontage to specifications provided by NZTA, may do so by contacting Lea O’Sullivan or Donna Hills on Ph. 03 548 1099 at Opus International Consultants, c/- Private Bag 36, Nelson.

Vegetation Control – Roadside Spraying in Rural Areas Registration of Non-Spray Areas Tasman District Council’s roading maintenance contractor is responsible for vegetation control within the road reserve. This includes the use of knock-down, residual and brushweed herbicides to remove vegetation growing in the roadway and around street furniture. The contractor is also responsible for control of pest plants and other noxious weeds such as gorse, fennel, hemlock, blackberry, broom, bracken, purple pampas grass and box thorn. Residents can request that their rural property frontage not be chemically sprayed and instead undertake the vegetation control themselves. On approval Council will mark the no spray area with red marker pegs. Rural residents who choose the “no spray” option must control the vegetation growth along their property frontage to ensure road users are not impeded and all roadside signs and markers are clearly visible. Vegetation height should not exceed 300mm. Any stormwater drainage ditches need to be kept clear of excess vegetation. At intersections vegetation must be kept well clear to ensure good sight lines for traffic using the intersection. If you wish to apply for your property to be added to the “No Spray” list, please contact Robyn Scherer, Engineering Secretary, Tasman District Council, Ph. 03 543 8524 or Email robyn.scherer@tasman.govt.nz

The Tasman District Council intends to grant a lease to part of the Brightwater Recreation Reserve under the Reserves Act 1977. The lease area will cover the land/building formerly used by the Bowling Club, including the former greens. More recently it has been used by Tasman Volleyball Association. This land is situated at the southern end of the reserve, near the reserve entrance off Charlotte Lane, Brightwater. It is intended to grant a five year lease to joint tenants, the Tasman Volleyball Association and Wanderers Sports Club. The authorised use for the leased land/buildings will be for the existing volleyball administration use and existing Beach Volleyball use, plus the new activity of an indoor gymnasium to be used by members of the Wanderers Sports Club, utilising the former lounge. Further information may be obtained by contacting Susan Mathieson, Ph. 03 543 8400, Email susan.mathieson@tasman.govt.nz Written submissions or objections should be sent to: Tasman District Council, Private Bag 4, Richmond, 7050 Submissions or objections will be received up to 4.00 pm on Friday 16 August 2013.

various discretionary conditions for on-licences, off-licences, club licences and special licences, including a discretionary one-way door policy for pubs, nightclubs and taverns;

restrictions are set on the location of new licensed premises.

In preparing the draft LAP the Council considered a range of policy options, some of which have been rejected/not included in the draft LAP.
