The nominations for local elections are in, and four candidates are running for mayor at the Tasman District Council. In the whole district, there are 45 candidates for councillors.
From the mayoral candidates list, Tim King, who is supported by mayor Richard Kempthorne, is the only one who is not running for any other position. Brent Maru is also running for the Motueka Community Board, Dean McNamara applied for the Moutere/Waimea Ward, and Maxwell Clark is running for the Rich-
mond Ward. There are nine candidates for four positions as a councillor for the Richmond Ward, ten candidates for three spots at Moutere/ Waimea, six candidates for one position at Golden Bay Ward, six candidates for Golden Bay Community Board and seven candidates for Motueka Community
Board. At the Lakes/Murchison Ward, the election is already decided. This is because the only candidate for the single position available as councillor is Stuart Bryant. Community-led ‘Meet the Candidates’ events start on 21 August so people can interact and find more about their candidates.
There is a list of meetings available on the Tasman District Council website. Postal voting and special votes start on 20 September and may be cast until 12 October. announcement of the election results will be on 17 October.

Big plans for local frozen yoghurt project Bruno Saia A group of students from Year 12 Business Class at Waimea College pitched their frozen yoghurt project at the national TV show Dragon’s Den. In this popular programme, entrepreneurs pitch their ideas to five of New Zealand’s multi-millionaires who must then decide if they want to invest their own money and expertise in the ventures.

Moutere-Waimea Ward Councillor Anne Turley attended most meetings Bruno Saia From October 2016 to July 2019 Tasman District Council had 105 meetings, including Full Council meetings, Community Development Committee, Engineering
Services Committee and Environment and Planning Committee. Moutere-Waimea Ward Councillor, Anne Turley missed only two of those meetings and so she is the councillor with the highest
attendance. “The important point in standing for election is being available to attend meetings where information is presented and discussed which enables Councillors to make informed decisions. With-
out attendance Councillors are unable to participate in the decision-making process.”, she says. David Ogilvie and Dean McNamara missed only three meetings each. Stuart Bryant missed 5, Paul Sangstaer missed 6 and
Peter Canton and Trevor Tuffnel missed 7 meetings each. Kit Maling, Tim King and Dana Wensley were absent from 8 meetings, Sue Brown from 9 and Paul Hawkes and Mark Greening missed 13 each.
New Zealand Police are still trying to gather information about an accident which occurred this Monday at the State Highway Six, between Brightwater and Wakefield. According to the Police Media
Centre, emergency services were notified of the accident around 6:50am. A single vehicle had left the road on Main Road Spring Grove, between Barton Lane and Telenius Road. The driver of a blue hatchback car was alone when the accident happened, and he
was sent to the hospital in a serious condition. Traffic control was set in place while emergency services worked at the scene. Anyone who may have seen the crash or the car overnight is asked to contact Richmond Police on 105.
Fashion Central is moving on Queen St There is a huge white structure covering one of the buildings on Queen Street. There are also contractors working full-time to ensure that the new building for Fashion Central’s women’s retail store will be finished and ready to move into by late September. According to Wayne Rowland,
Property Manager for store owners G & M Ballentyne Ltd, they bought the new site a while ago, and decided to move at the end of the lease of their former shop further down Queen St. “All the covering is mainly to protect the builders from the elements, so they can keep working,” he says.

Big plans for local frozen yoghurt project so this is made only with three ingredients,” says Meila. The group is with the Young Enterprise Scheme, which gathers young entrepreneurs from all New Zealand. “Our business is called Frost Bite Frozen Yoghurt. Basically, we are making a frozen yogurt, a healthy alternative to all the sugary ice creams. We noticed a gap in the market for this. We wanted to create a healthier version of the ice cream,” says Quilah. Their first product sales will be next Saturday at the Nelson market, and after that it will be sold at a kiosk at the Waimea College. “We plan to continue our business until Year 13 Business Studies and I think next year is when we want to try to expand it in to cafes and other kinds of stores”, says Amber.

FROM PAGE 1 “There were 41 businesses from the Nelson and Marlborough regions, and we ended up second,” says the 17-year old Meila Picard, who is part of the group with her colleagues Quilah Bruce, Amber Field and Trinity Cooper. “We went through a lot of planning and different business ideas to get to this one,” says Meila. They wanted to do something related to healthy eating and sustainability. “So we came up with this and it’s been good ever since.”, she says. According to Meila, after doing some experiments, they’ve got two flavours which they are happy with: mango, and berry and banana. “We tried to make it as simple as possible. When we look at food labels, there are so many ingredients and there is a lot you don’t understand,

Local workshop for smarter business Bruno Saia Business owners got together last Thursday at Crombie Lockwood Boardroom in Richmond, for the Financial Awareness workshop, organised by Nelson Chamber of Commerce. Their goal was to get a better understanding of how to manage their businesses and get better results. Manoli Aerakis, from Malloch McClean Tasman, was the workshop’s presenter. “We are just a small business, and I do everything, from guiding to market-
ing and financial management, and I found the presentation very clear and simple,” says Lee-Anne Jago, from Waka Abel Tasman. “Manoli has a great way of visually showing what the reports look like, so it’s much easier to understand. According to Manoli, business owners are able to run smarter and better business. “Nine times out of ten, business owners fall into business. No one teaches you how to run it. What we are trying to do today is to increase people’s financial awareness of what they should be looking at,” he says.
“If you can think about driving a car, you have a dashboard, you see how fast you are going, how much fuel, and if the car is going to overheat. You need that in your business. Do I have enough sales? Are my people doing well? You need a dashboard to know how well you are going.” According to Trina Zimmerman, from Nelson Chamber of Commerce, this was the first of 16 workshops that are scheduled for this year. Next one will be presented by Ipiphany with the topic ‘Intellectual Property - The Basics’ on 27 August, at 9:30 am, also at Crombie Lockwood Boardroom.
Tasman District Council spends $31,000 per year on picking up fly-tipping, but it is still possible to find garbage at remote areas near Waimea River. Last week, councillor Kit Maling was having a walk at River Road when he found rubbish. “The fly-tipping in the river has improved. There is less rubbish than there used to be. Because Council closed off the road to vehicles and now there are just bikes allowed, you can’t drive all the way through. We still find some rubbish as we have today but there is much improvement from what it was. Unfortunately, people are still dumping tyres and other stuff.” Kit has been walking through the area for the last 9 years and believes that the community should avoid dumping in the site. “It’s not cheap to go to the dump, but Council doesn’t make a profit out of it, and that’s just people not being responsible, that’s the thing,” he says.

Richmond Mall is undergoing some seismic strengthening to protect it against future earthquakes. Richmond Mall centre manager, Belinda de Clercq, says the work, which is currently underway ”in the middle part of the mall” near the Farmers department store and Postie Plus, would not affect the overall customer experience. ”While we are doing that we are also raising the ceiling 800mm to make it more open and brighter. ”Once the ceiling goes in the skylights will be redone.” De Clercq said while it was two separate projects, she felt the seismic strengthening was important with future development plans. ”The siesmic work has been taken on as something we felt was important to do. ”All the work is being done out of sight and won't affect customers. ”We hope to have the work done by the end of November,” she said. De Clercq said a number of shops were working on new fit-outs and fresh looks over the next month and it would be worth keeping an eye on the shop fronts as they are completed.

This is the Richmond branch of the international organisation called Days for Girls. New Zealand has 18 teams throughout the country and last year produced 6ooo kits nation-wide and Debra and her team produced 1500 kits locally. Funding comes from donations and grants, and kits are distributed to places such as Women’s Refuge, Salvation Army, Ma’s Place and the Red Cross, to name a few. The well-constructed 100% cotton kits last 3-4 years with careful washing, and menstrual health education is also included. Days for Girls is an international, non-profit organisation with 50,000 volunteers worldwide that has helped 1 million women in over 116 countries by providing them with the kits and education. Women around the world resort to using rags, mattress stuffing, banana leaves and cardboard to manage their menstruation. Rainbow celebrates bumper season Paula Hulbert Fresh snow, blue skies and sunshine saw one of the busiest days on record at Rainbow Ski Field on Sunday. Hundreds of people flocked to the popular ski spot to make the most of the conditions after a soggy start to the season. Staff even kept the lifts open for extra time to let people make the most of the Bluebirds day- when conditions are perfect. General manager James Lazor says about 850 people visited the ski field on Sunday. According to James, it was the busiest so far this season. “People look at the long-term weather report mid-week and it was saying Sunday would be a Bluebird day. “Though people should look at our website and Facebook pages for the daily weather as we live on the mountain, a lot of times what
Conditions at Rainbow Ski Field were perfect for the people who visited on Sunday. Photo: Supplied. the forecasters are saying and what really happens are very different, so many times people are
missing out on Bluebird days. “We even kept the lifts open a little longer for visitors to really
enjoy the amazing day and had a visit from the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter to take
away a patient, who is okay now,” he says. From midday, the upper carparks filled up fast. James says staff worked hard to make sure everyone had a good time. “The upper car parks filled up fast, so we controlled the cars coming up from the bottom gate around midday. “We have a great team and whether it is a busy day or normal day, they are all trained professionals, so the extra work we can handle,” he says. Next week the inaugural Playhouse King and Queen of the Mountain event will be held. The freestyle competition is open to all ages and confidence levels and will be held between 9am4pm on August 25. Tickets are $10. To check the mountain conditions next weekend access the website: www.skirainbow.co.nz.
Pretty pest must be removed Staff Reporter It may be pretty, but it’s now officially a pest. Taiwan cherry (Prunus campanulata) can no longer be propagated, sold or planted in Nelson or Tasman. The new Tasman-Nelson Regional Pest Management Plan (RPMP) for 2019-2029 came into force on July 1, and Taiwan cherry now has eradication status in the plan. Tasman District Council Biosecurity and Biodiversity coordi-
nator Paul Sheldon explains this means landowners must report the presence of Taiwan cherry and its cultivars on their land within five working days of sighting it and must organise its removal. “Our biosecurity staff will be out and about helping residents stop this pest tree from taking over our landscapes. It’s been spreading through the Richmond Ranges and other areas of scrubland. It’s a pest because it forms dense, long-lived stands that choke out
our native vegetation,” Paul says. Taiwan cherry is also known as bell-flowered cherry or Formosan cherry. “It is very pretty and in the past people have been able to buy these trees. For those who have planted them as specimens, our biosecurity staff will provide replacement trees up to the value of $135 once we’re satisfied the pest tree or trees are gone. We’re also willing to consider a financial contribution towards their removal on a case-by-case basis.”

Last week, on the story about the Vintage cars expo in Wakefield, we said that Gavin Hill restored Trevor’s Carston car but the correct information is that Trevor restored his own 1912 Rover Landaulette. Nelson’s Jim Carter to enter hall of fame Kate Russell One of the country’s most formative musical figures - who happens to be a Nelson resident - will be inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame at the 2019 APRA Silver Scroll Awards this October. Jim Carter, who turned 100 in March this year, will be joined by Ruru Karaitiana and Pixie Williams (both since passed on) in the prestigious honor - as together, they created ‘Blue Smoke’ - New Zealand’s first homegrown pop song in 1949. This year celebrates the song’s 70th anniversary. It was the first New Zealand song to be wholly written, recorded and manufactured in New Zealand. It was a huge commercial success and was covered by a host of international
stars, including Dean Martin. Growing up in Wellington, Jim first picked up the lap-steel guitar in 1936 at the age of 17. He aspired to be a dance band guitarist, so took lessons on rhythm guitar and joined a Wellington band called Gerry Hall and his Orchestra, playing in a church opposite the Basin Reserve. During the Second World War, he was in the army for a year, but tuberculosis kept him away from the action. Instead, he worked as an army chef and often performed at concerts held in military camps such as Trentham. After the war, Carter joined the 2YA Orchestra, which played “pop music of the day”, accompanying a female vocalist broadcasting live-to-air from the station’s Wellington studio. Then Ruru Karaitiana, who wrote
Jim Carter on his Spanish semi-acoustic guitar in Wellington during the early 1950s. Photo: AudioCulture. ‘Blue Smoke’ approached Jim to play the lap-steel guitar and lead his band on the recording as he
wanted it to have a Hawaiian feel. But Jim’s contribution to New Zealand’s pop music history
didn’t stop at that. In the same year it was recorded, he played rhythm guitar on Ken Avery’s ‘Paekakariki’, and in the mid1950s he played on several pivotal recordings by Johnny Cooper - his biggest hit ‘One By One’, his originals ‘Look What You Done (Lonely Blues)’ and ‘Pie-Cart Rock’n’Roll’, and his version of ‘Rock Around the Clock’. Lap-steel guitar and music have remained a key part of Jim’s life, including a new recording of ‘Blue Smoke’ he did with Neil Finn for Anzac Day in 2015. While Karaitiana and Williams have now sadly passed on, their children will be accepting the awards on their behalf. The APRA Silver Scroll Awards are to be held at Spark Arena in Auckland on Wednesday, October 2.

We are changing for the better!
The answer is not closing roads. The Council decision to block off Hampden Street at its intersection with Waimea Road is treating the symptoms. Full points to Councillors Matheson, Noonan and Rutledge for opposing the closure. The fundamental problem is that Waimea Road and Rocks Road do not have sufficient capacity to get the people and freight in and out of our city and port. Congestion is getting worse. The times that Waimea and Rocks Roads snarled up are growing. It has spread south to Richmond’s roads and intersections. Rat runs are developing on neighbourhood streets not designed for such traffic.
Injury accidents and road fatalities are increasing as our roads are not designed for these traffic volumes and frustrated road users take risks they should not. Labour has had little to say about Nelson’s transport issues. The PM, when Leader of the Opposition said she opposes the Southern Link as there are better alternatives like barging logs from Rabbit Island or a tunnel though the Port Hills. Neither alternative is credible. Transport Minister Phil Twyford has cancelled billions in highway projects around New Zealand including the $5 million project in Nelson for resurfacing with quiet seal on SH6 in Atawhai and Stoke.

Yes, I know the word “lives” would be challenged by some. It’s not a life; it’s a fetus. But I cannot take that view as a Christian. Life begins in the womb. The bible is so clear about this. Mr Twyford’s statement that New Zealand has long over-invested in highways gives little hope to Nelson. Green Co-Leader James Shaw and Councillor Matt Lawry promised in 2017 $23 million for a Rocks Road walkway and cycleway but nothing has eventuated. The Transport Agency has rightly stated this is unrealistic without addressing the large volume of traffic and trucks. I have long advocated for Rocks Road being an esplanade for walking, cycling and recreation but this is only possible by relocating the State Highway. The message Simon Bridges received from our Mayors, Port Nelson, AA, contractors and Road
Transport Association was of frustration. Simon’s statement that National would put the Southern Link back on track was welcomed. National has a strong track record of investment in Nelson’s highways. We did QEII Drive in the 1980s, Whakatu Drive in the 1990s and the Ruby Bay Bypass in the 2010s. The Southern Link is just part of what needs doing in the 2020s. We need to be planning for four lanes to the plains – ie out to Three Brothers corner. Our community faces big choices on transport with local elections this October and Parliamentary elections next October. Nelson needs leadership and direction. Advt.

Nelson Matters
Transport issues were to the fore last week with National Leader Simon Bridges meeting with the Mayors and transport leaders and the Council decision to close off Hampden Street from Waimea Road. Nelson‘s transport infrastructure is not coping with our growth in population, freight and tourism. We have 10,000 more people in the region than a decade ago. Freight volumes through Port Nelson have grown 40% in the last five years. The additional million tonnes equated to another 100 fully laden trucks every day. Visitors to our region have topped 400,000 and are growing at 10,000 a year.

The company made a big impression in Scotland, even appearing in a national newspaper which had heard what it had taken for the young people to get to the festival and wrote that they
embodied the ‘true spirit of the Fringe’. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is a yearly event that attracts 35,000 performers and 3880 shows and for the Nelson Theatre’s sell out production of Grease Lightening to win ‘glowing appraisal from the UK press is no mean feat’. six of the eight

How it all began The company was first established in Renwick in 1996 when Adrian Orchard, a fully-qualified technician, started Tractor Repairs and Spares Ltd as a home-based business, working out a service vehicle. Nelson Theatre decided to take a small group of talented young actors to the Edinburg Festival Fringe with 13 weeks notice, Joel Sangster from Waimea College and his family didn’t hesitate. This was too good an opportunity for the young actor/singer to miss. Already a seasoned performer, he appeared in A Christmas Carol at 13, Joel had been entertaining the family for years. His mum Amber says “it started when he was in his highchair and it hasn’t stopped. Dancing, singing, putting on small shows for the family with his brother. So he joined the Nelson Theatre at 9 years of age and it’s been full-on, but the training has been excellent and prepared him well for the future.” To raise money for the trip Joel sold things at Nelson markets, busked and performed in shows in retirement homes, organised by Richard Carruthers.

performances were sold out and the audience reviews were excellent. “People loved the show said Richard, loved that it was Grease with real teenagers, and that we had come across the world to present it.” As well as giving performances the young actors distributed flyers during the day advertising the show. They also had the opportunity to explore Edinburgh, see other shows, and when in London visit art galleries and St Pauls,”a fantastic opportunity,” said Joel’s granddad Conly Zimmermann who contacted the paper about his grandson. The Fringe itself continues for another week, but school commitments mean the Nelson company is back home now. “But interest in returning next year is high, among those who had been this year and those who had missed out” said Richard. “The audiences were really close to the stage and they sang and danced along, it was amazing” said Joel on returning to Richmond.

site where we set up a dedicated parts and service area,” says Pam. Adrian’s solid reputation for quality workmanship and delivering on time was part of the reason the couple were offered the opportunity. “As the service side of the business got busier, we slowly built up more positions, with more staff also required for our parts’ section.” In 2007, the couple took the innovative step to also open a branch in Seddon which is another important area of Marlborough’s wine production. The Seddon site proved to be a valuable asset and in 2010, the move was made to a purpose-built site. That year Tractor Repairs and Spares Ltd was also appointed the AGCO franchise for Massey Ferguson and Fendt in the Nelson region where a suitable workshop was found, and the Nelson branch was born. 2016 was another step forward for the company with the purchase of TFM Tractors in Hastings. Today, the company continues to expand, and the emphasis is still on Adrian’s core values of delivering first-class service and support. Tractor Repairs and Spares Ltd outgrows old workshop In 2011, a branch was set up at 19 Poutama Street, Richmond. “When we first started, we had four permanent staff, but with the growth of the Tasman area, we now employ 9 permanent staff,” says Branch Manager, Craig Hovenden. “Due to this growth, we then realised we had outgrown our old building, so I began looking for a new premises which would suit our business require-
ments,” says Craig. “When we found the premises on Appleby Highway we recognised it would give us a good frontage along with the space we required.” The chance to see new purpose-built premises Pam says it’s been pretty exciting because our new premises has been purpose-built. “It’s warm and inviting, not only for the clients but also for the people who are working there,” she says. “It has also been designed to provide the kind of technology that today’s machinery requires. At the old workshop, the team had to do part of their work outdoors, but now all the work can be completed indoors.” Products available at the new Richmond branch Tractor Spares and Repairs Ltd is a big supplier of AGCO product including Germanmade Fendt tractors which are known to be the best tractors in the world. Rugby Section Roundup Well that’s the Super 15 done and dusted ‘til next year. First of all, I would like to thank all that competed in the competition. If it wasn’t for you Tipsters, it would not take place so a big ‘thankyou.’ To all place getters, congrats to you and well done. To Ivan a big ‘thankyou’ for your help, it’s truly appreciated as communication between us is important for the registration and prize giving. Wayne, thanks for your help and for taking the photos at the presentation which was appreciated thankyou. This years’ Super 15 was a really up and down affair for several of you, as at one stage you were up in the running, then down and then you got a good score and when back up you went for the run home. It was quite entertaining watching the
scores move around the ladder right from top to bottom. To the new members, I hope you have enjoyed the competition. It will be great to see you back for the Mitre 10 & World Cup as these will be 2 great competitions, which will be run separately. To the oldies of the section, once again a big ‘thankyou’ for your continuing support year after year, and especially from the likes of Mike S, Bill F, The Bouys, John H, J Llewlin, and so on. Thanks, also for the banter – keep it coming as it brings good laughs which I enjoy reading to Dawn. I would also like to thank Wayne Williams for those great sponsors’ products he obtained from Speights & Tui they are appreciated for each competition. Lastly, to those of you

Top Tips To Get Your Home Ready For The Market De-clutter - This is a must before going on the market. General clutter can create the illusion that a room is a lot smaller & lacking storage & this can ultimately be a make-or-break for some buyers. Eliminating personal possessions is also key - buyers need to be able to envision themselves living in the property. The Great Outdoors - A well-presented garden can add great value to any home. Creating an inviting outdoor space can be as simple as mowing the lawn, pruning overgrown plants
and adding a splash of colour. Don’t neglect minor repairs - Set aside a few weekends to fix those pesky pieces that need to be repaired. Whether it be that dripping tap or small crack in the wall = ensure that they aren’t a symptom of a larger problem that will crop up in a builders report.

Avoid over-spending on renovations - Sometimes people will look to renovate their home prior to selling with the intention of adding extra value. However it pays to tread carefully, mammoth makeovers are very risky and it’s best not to try and anticipate what buyers want in terms of décor & design.

Gas Stays Can all gas stays be re-gassed? A gas stay is the small mechanical device that lifts and holds open your car boot, boat hatch or toolbox lid, to name a few uses. Most stays can be re-gassed. Stays need to be in good enough condition for re-gassing (oil inside), some stays will not take more pressure. The seals cannot be replaced as the stay is swaged at assembly, if a seal has blown then we can supply a new stay. How long does it take to re-gas? We offer a 24-hr turn-around service on re-gassing for most stays. Call in and we
remove the gas stays to check condition for re-gas, you can then take your car away and come back the following day to have them refitted. How long do new stays last vs re-gassing? It depends on the application and use, but we find new stays generally last between 10-15 years. Re-gassing won’t last as long however, we check them before re-gassing and recommend any that are close to the end of their life be replaced. We offer a three-month warranty on re-gassing in which the cost of re-gassing will be taken off the price of a new stay supplied by us.

Canterbury given a taste of their own medicine Jonty Dine and Peter Jones If Tasman rugby fans were wondering if their side is the real deal in 2019 - they can begin to believe. The Mako has comprehensively achieved the toughest task in provincial rugby on Sunday, defeating Canterbury in Canterbury. Sometimes fond early impressions flatter to deceive, with subsequent outings bringing supporters quickly back to earth. However, on the basis of the Mako’s showing in Christchurch on Saturday afternoon, there is more than enough cause for optimism. The 23-7 result, coupled with the positive style and creativity the Mako brought to the table, suggest a feast of rugby is about to be set before the Tasman faithful. They were more clinical than their hosts, more aggressive and effective at the break-
down, kicked more accurately and chased better, applied massive pressure at set piece and subsequently “bossed” the game. The Mako scored two first half tries, including a scorcher from winger Leicester Faingaanuku to lead 18-3 at halftime, and effectively put the result to bed soon after the break with a third. Ethan Blackadder was immense at flanker for the visitors while halfback Finlay Christie controlled his troops effectively, giving the likes of Will Jordan and Levi Aumua room to make inroads of which they made plenty. Tasman now sit top of the premiership table, one point ahead of 2019 champions Auckland, a great position to be in after two of the more difficult games of the season. The win broke a 24-year record for Canterbury who had not had back-to-back
losses to kick off an NPC campaign since 1996. Tasman took just five minutes to cross Canterbury’s line, Havili’s break giving Aumua a simple run in down the right flank for the opening try. Brett Cameron and Mitch Hunt traded penalties before Faingaanuku made a rampaging bust from inside his own half, breaking four tackles on his way to score Tasman’s second. Canterbury made the perfect start to the second half, winning a turnover on its own line as Josh McKay sped 99metres to score the host’s first try. However, the Mako responded almost immediately through Shannon Frizell, the try shutting the gate on Canterbury who offered little in the way of further resistance and struggled to find answers to Tasman’s resolute Mako’s winger Leicester Faingaanuku on his way to the tryline. The faces of everyone present at Greenacres Golf Club in Richmond last Thursday showed only happiness and pride. Tony Naylor, Greenacres and Special Olympics coordinator, was honoured with the Bill Wooster Memorial Trophy. He was the first to be granted the prize, which is to be awarded every year to a person who epitomises community, fairness, friendship, participation, spirit, and above all else, fun. “Tony has worked tirelessly with Special Olympics athletes, especially those who see golf as an opportunity to get more involved in sport,” says the Club Manager, Stuart Anderson. “Those Special Olympics athletes (photo) come here every week to play golf, and they are all good guys. They’ve all got limitations in life because they have special intellectual disabilities, but we’ve all got limitations, just different ones,” says Tony. “The good thing about the guys is that they listen, they learn, and they practise and practise

“This prize is for somebody who works in the background, who is not the best player but is involved in all aspects of the club. It’s about the sociability, friend-
ships and the spirit of the game”, she says. According to Stuart, the work done by Tony with the Special Olympics athletes is much more

Victory leads Richmond F45 to semi finals Kathleen Thornalley
Richmond F45 went into Thursday night’s game against Nelson College for Girls with a ‘must win’ game plan. Both teams settled in well with each side trading goal for goal. Richmond F45’s defensive line-up of Sarah Steele, Kat Jones and Amy Cunningham, applied pressure constantly through the quarter making NCG earn their attacking ball through seven hard phases of defence. NCG shooters Zoe Curtis and Sophie Fleming showed great understanding before finally scoring. Richmond F45’s attacking end capitalised strongly on their own attacking ball, finishing the first quarter score (17-11), with both shooters having a perfect shooting percentage. Richmond F45 continued strongly into the second quarter scoring three consecutive goals, on the back of brilliant defensive work from Steele and Jones. Ruby Jensen entered into WD to apply some speed, and Rebekah Shepard worked tirelessly through the court producing quality ball and space to her young shooting duo of van Diepen and Ogilvie. Richmond F45 took the foot off the pedal in the latter part of the quar-
ter allowing NCG to retaliate with an energised challenge, pushing Richmond F45 all the way to halftime (30-23). Shooters Ogilvie & van Diepen ventured out with continued confidence to start the second half of the game, both retaining 100% shooting accuracy. NCG centre Chloe Webb showed her experience and maturity delivering good quality ball to her shooters, but they will be disappointed with a lack of position, made difficult to attain by the Richmond F45 defenders Jones and Steele who were ready to pounce on any wayward balls or missed opportunities. Leading into the final quarter, Richmond F45 were sitting strong on the leader board (46-33) and looked well in control. Making several changes throughout the quarter, with player introductions of Lauren Ellis, Maddie Springer and Caitlin Roberts, Richmond F45 stuck to their game plan, both shooters being rewarded with an exceptional shooting game. It may have not been their prettiest outing but they will be pleased to progress into the semi-finals round next week against Prices Ahurei. Final score (60-50).

Wanderers age-grade rugby takes centre stage Saturday saw many JAB and agegrade teams conclude their season and this report will focus on preparation for two new teams which will commence for Wanderers next year. Taylors Wanderers will enter teams in the Tasman Rugby Union under-14 and under-18 next year, at both ends of the college and secondary schools competitions. A number of players who may play in the under 14s finished their 2019 season when the Wanderers under-13 Blue Boars showed some great skills in winning the Goodman Sevens on Saturday at Neale Park. Thanks to some insights on how to play sevens from Jessie Pitman a couple days earlier, the boys got their heads around some basic concepts and managed to skilfully get through to the finals. On the way they beat Marist, Waimea Old Boys and Nelson then our friendly country foe, Huia, in an extremely hard fought final. Leading 20-15 at half-time in near sub-zero conditions, the team stuck to their game plan and went on to win 35-15. Many thanks to Pogo Paterson who coached and managed the team for the tournament and to the organisers of the excellent event. Jimmy West picked up the most valuable player for the tournament under-13 age group. “The whole team played very well and stuck to the game plan we had practiced, which allowed the guys to know and understand their roles on the field, and keeping the structure enabled us to capitalise when spinning the ball wide,” said Nathan Inch, the assistant coach on the day. The boys all showed great ball skills considering the conditions and they were a pleasure to watch.
Wanderers under-13 Blue Boars won the Goodman Sevens on Saturday at Neale Park. Photo: Supplied. Wanderers field two teams in the TRU under-13 section and Wanderers Gold wrapped up their season last week at home on a sodden Brightwater Domain against Marist. This year had been tough for this team with only 16 players on our roster and being possibly the smallest team in the grade. However, they have had a wonderful team unity and the skill level and knowledge of the game has grown hugely. Every player has made massive improvement, and this has been clear with the positive results in the second half of the season. Saturday’s game was quite typical, as only 16 players were available and up against a big Marist side. The first half was a battle and it took a while for Wanderers to adjust to the conditions. They had very little possession and for 25 minutes of the first half, they were able to repel Marist’s constant attack. Bradley Emerson pulled off three
try-saving tackles during this period. With halftime five minutes away, Wanderers conceded two soft tries to give Marist a 12-0 lead at the break. Coach Don McLean had a few words to say at halftime and it must have worked as the Gold team came out with a new resolve in the second half. Led by some fantastic tactical kicking by Bradley Emerson and first-five Kobi Johnson-Stevens, the Wanderers boys found themselves hot on attack. Unlike Marist in the first half, the Wanderers players were able to capitalise on this advantage and score four unanswered tries in the second half. Tries to Alex Thomson, Hamish Jolly, Sarah Jones and Riley McCuish Hocking created a final score of 22-12 to Wanderers Gold. This player development model is the basis of Wanderers JAB strategies and must be encouraged at all levels of play,
requiring an understanding and respect from all involved in the game, but especially between the ages of 11 and 18. Players who may join the 2020 under-18 team were on display at Broads Fields in the third place play-off between Nelson Boys College Blue and Waimea College in the under-16 competition, which was a fitting contest and an appropriate end-of-year battle. Waimea scored first through Dylan Restall who played his best game and was rightly rewarded as Player of the Day, before Nelson replied with two of their own for a 12-5 lead. Luke Shirley scored a try almost identical to last week’s against Marlborough Boys’ but was unable to convert and Nelson scored right on halftime to lead 17-10 at the break. The first 35 minutes had been notable for the quality of play in difficult conditions, reflecting well on both coaching teams, with good continuity skills and close
quarter support play. Although Waimea kicked an early penalty in the second half and narrowed the score to 17-13, a serious injury to Jack DanielsonWatts necessitated his departure by ambulance and Nelson eventually exerted dominance with a free running backline, that exploited some fragile defence. This dominance resulted in five tries where almost all commenced from around mid-field when one-on-one tackles were missed. It was a shame for Waimea to finish 49-13 behind on the scoreboard as they had made Nelson College work much harder than the score would suggest. Noah Fraser impressed again for his tenacity and strength, especially at scrum time, and Lawson Ingles was acknowledged by his peers for his continual involvement andfor his determined, by example, leadership. As with the Wanderers under-13 teams, the Waimea College under-16 teams has progressed admirably this season with every single player showing improved understanding, game knowledge and skills over the season. Again, the efforts of the coaches Gus Shirley and Shane Huhu are acknowledged and appreciated. Wanderers now look forward to Saturday’s Senior Club prize giving, to be held at the clubrooms at 6pm where all stakeholders will be acknowledged and entertained by All Black icon Ian Kirkpatrick in a fitting finale to the 2019 season. Tickets are available at $25 per person, including dinner and music, contact Diane on phone, 542 4433 as there will be no door sales due to the strict catering requirements.
