Caravan fire victim ‘a nice guy’
Staff reporters
The victim of a fatal fire at Club Waimea’s caravan park on Saturday night was “a nice guy who would do anything for anyone”. Brian Lewis Halvorsen, aged 64, died after a fire destroyed his caravan in the park at about 8pm on Saturday. Brian was the sole occupant of the caravan and a friend and neighbour Nola Edwards says the tragedy has shocked and saddened the residents.
“We have known him for 25 years and in all that time I never heard him say a bad word about anybody. I will miss him dreadfully,” Nola says. Nelson fire service specialist fire investigator Craig Piner is investigating the scene and says he expects to release the cause of the blaze this week. Police have also completed their investigations and have referred the case to the coroner. “We are still investigating,” Craig told the Waimea Weekly on Tuesday.

News of the fire was first reported on Saturday night by nelsonlive.co.nz. Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade chief Ralph Lonsdale says the caravan “went up like a rocket” leaving nothing but the charred remains of the caravan and car. Ralph says crews from Wakefield and Stoke attended to the fire, as the Richmond brigade had its awards dinner on Saturday. “We were over at the Waimea Old Boys

Local schools light up city centre Thousands of people lined the streets of Nelson’s central business district on Friday night for the annual masked parade. The spectacular parade was themed “world of books” this year and entrants went from Lord of the Rings to Willy Wonka to Where’s Wally. More than 3500 took part in the parade with an estimated 20,000 watching from footpaths and car parks. The supreme winner was Nayland Primary School. Axel De Maupeou from Nelson City Council says the event was a huge success. “The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive so we are very happy.” For video and photos of the parade, visit www.nelsonlive.co.nz

It’s back, your chance to win $5000 cash
It’s time to get your wallet out and get shopping because you could win your money back, and more. Shop ‘n Win has been running in Richmond for nine years and sees one lucky local shopper win $5000 cash just in time for Christmas. The retailer that sells the winning ticket also takes home $2000. Waimea Weekly advertising manager, Sue Davies, says the competition is the most popular local promotion ever and will no doubt attract a huge number of entries this year too.
Talleys Snap Frozen Tarakihi Fillets
In the last couple of years the competition has received over 73,000 entries with last year’s $5000 dollar prize going to William and Trish Healey and the $2000 going to Advanced Automotive owners Tony and Janine Grainger. William says he hadn’t bothered to fill the form out the year before as he thought he would never win, but decided to give it a go last year. To keep people in the shopping mood, this year will also see six lucky shoppers win one of the $500 weekly prize draws, donated by the Richmond Mall

which has come on board as sponsors again this year. Shop ‘n Win starts on Monday, October 26 and will be running right through until December 6. Shoppers simply need to fill out an entry form when they buy something at any of the participating retailers. Once the form is filled in, the shopper is in with a chance to win the cash. There are no limits on how many forms shoppers can enter, in fact, the more the merrier. Check out the Shop ‘n Win page for a list of participating businesses.

Here’s some stories from www. Schools locked down: Several Nelson schools were in lockdown in the wake of the police response to a fight in which a firearm was presented. Neighbours reported seeing four to five Armed Offenders Squad officers and two police dogs storm into a Brunner St home. Police communications manager Barbara Dunn says the police reacted to reports of a fight and placed road blocks around Bishopdale. “We were told a firearm was presented so we’ve sent in our Armed Offenders Squad. Three men were taken into custody but the call out forced police to cordon off Brunner, Motueka and Tukuka Sts, along with Nelson College, Hampden St School, Nelson Hospital and several preschools in the area.

The 12-day New Zealand tour begins in Wellington on November 4 and includes Dunedin, Nelson, Ngaruawahia, New Plymouth and Auckland. Further dates and details are yet to be confirmed and it is unclear what their Nelson visit will involve. Rumours include a trip to the waterfront, a vineyard tour, a wine and food event at the Boathouse and a wander around the Saturday market. New flags fly on Haven Rd: Nelson’s Speedy Signs has hoisted the five referendum flags ahead of next month’s vote. The flags were made in-house and raised on Friday, and are already drawing a lot of attraction. Employee Mike Smith says they’ve had people come into the shop and pick a favourite, but also several who want to keep the existing flag. “It’s the 26 million dollar question – which one will New Zealand choose?” Company director Glen Irain says it’s good for people to start seeing them. “The referendum is coming up, people need to make a decision. It’s like buying a new outfit, you’ve got to see how it looks and feels.” Glen says they will be flying Monday-Friday until the referendum at least, and that they are for sale.

Security tags cause problems Kate Russell Nelsonians have been setting off shop door alarms more often lately – but they’re not shop lifting – it’s because of a new electronic security tag scheme that has been employed by an iconic Kiwi company. Customers who buy clothing from The Warehouse may have noticed new security tags attached to their garments. But the tags, which are deactivated - but not removed - upon purchase, have been causing problems in other shops by setting of their door security alarms. The problem has been most persistent at Kmart Richmond. People have been buying clothes that contain the tags at the The Warehouse, which is right next door, and then come in and set off The Warehouse the Kmart door alarms. security tags are A spokesperson from causing problems Kmart Richmond says at other stores. that it’s happening “all the time” and it usually gives their customers a bit of a fright. “We have to tell customers that it’s just the tag on their Warehouse clothing, and we help them cut them off if they want us to, so it doesn’t happen again,” she says. “I’m sure, once people are educated about it, they can cut them off themselves and it will drop off.” A spokesperson from The Warehouse says that the tags are a new theft precaution, which are deactivated upon purchase. They said they could not comment on the tags setting off alarms at other stores. The Warehouse’s website says that clothing over $15 and footwear over $20 are now supposed to have an electronic tag attached at source by the manufacturer.

ShakeOut may have been a fun distraction for many of Waimea Intermediate students but for some last Thursday’s national earthquake drill was a serious business. Waimea Intermediate’s 677 students and their teachers were among 9233 people in the Tasman district who dropped, covered and held on tight when the “earthquake” hit at 9.15am on Thursday. And for seven of the students the drill brought back frightening memories of their experiences in the Christchurch earthquakes. Lachlan Craig and Rhiannon Phillips, who both dropped, covered and held on for their lives on February 22, 2011, say it’s so important to know what do when an earthquake hits. “I was lying in bed when the first one happened and looked at the ceiling and saw the light swinging,” Rhiannon says. “My dad suddenly ran into the room and said ‘get under the bed and put your hands on your head’. “I was at school for the second one and it was even worse. Book shelves were falling over and pictures were coming off the walls so it was good know-

The whole thing was really scary but it was good knowing what to do.” Sadly, Lachlan was unaware that his uncle had been killed in a bus that had been crushed only a few hundred metres away Teacher Jess Drummond, who was in the Riccarton Mall when the big one struck, says she also followed the drop, cover, hold drill, diving under a table with
another person and covering her head. However, Jess says the “building was moving so much and things were falling down everywhere I thought it was going to collapse so I got up and just ran.” “There were people everywhere running for their lives so I got up and ran too. It was so frightening. “Some of the kids think this drill is a bit of fun and a joke but I sat down with my class and told them it’s not a laughing matter. Everyone talks about the Christchurch earthquakes but it can happen anywhere and we need to be prepared.” About 33,000 people in the Nelson-Tasman region and 1.5million around the country took part in ShakeOut which originated in California in 2008.

Sixty years of marriage started with a dance Andrew Board
It was a typical summer Saturday night on the Waimea Plains in the early 1950s when Colin met Elviene. It was at a dance in an old wool shed on Lansdown Rd in Appleby and three Suburban buses were parked outside after bringing in people from all over the district. The music was rocking. Colin can’t remember what drew him to the woman who would become his wife but Elviene helped him fill in the gaps: “I must have been so pretty, you see.” Four kids, nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren later, Colin and Elviene Brown will celebrate 60 years of marriage tomorrow. They say over the course of their marriage there have been very few disputes and Elviene reckons it can be traced right back to that first night when Colin chose to dance with her and not one of her sisters. “All of my sisters got stroppy quick, I was the placid one of the lot,” she jokes. “That’s probably it.” They were both around 19 years old when they met that night. Elviene’s family owned a mixed farm in Appleby where Seifrieds now grow grapes and Colin left school at 14 to become a mechanic where the Stoke Mall now sits. When they met he was working at a garage on Three Brothers Corner, where Jacks Tyres is now.
Above: Colin and Elviene Brown outside the Talbot St home they’ve lived in for their 60 years of marriage. Photo: Andrew Board. Left: Colin and Elviene on their wedding day in 1955. After several years of courting, the couple were married at the All Saints Church on Vanguard St in Nelson on October 22, 1955. Before they were married, work had started on what would be their family home on Talbot St, Richmond, which is now two doors down from the entrance to Couplands in the Kmart complex. The house has been the central point for the family ever since. Their children Murray, Christine, Diane and Maureen were “well occupied” and the home was a meeting place for the neighbourhood.
Elviene says they were good kids. “Well, they weren’t druggies anyway. Goodness, I’d hate to have kids today, hells bells,” says Elviene. “All our grandkids are good too, you never know what they’ve tried but they’re not druggies, they haven’t been in court.” They say their marriage has been solid and Elviene says she can’t remember any major arguments. “We have a good marriage and get on together. We discuss things. We may have got a bit bored with each other sometimes but you just go on with it. We were pretty
compatible, I think that’s the secret,” she says. Asked why they think why some marriages don’t seem to last as long these days, Elviene has no answer. “I don’t know what the hell they do. You’ve to talk to each other, discuss it and not get uptight and not throw things at each other, I think people get that kind of carry on from television.” But they have had their challenges. Around 15 years ago Elviene had a major operation on her eye and several weeks later Colin had major heart surgery. But they’ve had many more good times than bad. Overseas trips, a successful mechanic business for 40 years and, of course, the family. And they still share hobbies, they both attend country music sing-a-longs, where he’s “the oldest bugger singing”. Elviene says, as the town of Richmond has grown around them they’ve had the odd offer on the house, but they’ve never thought of moving. “We’re silly if we shift now. We’ve liked it all this time so why not see the rest of the time out, no matter what.” The pair will celebrate their milestone on Saturday night with their family, who are coming from around New Zealand for the anniversary. Elviene says it will be good to see her family together and that the time has flown. “Sixty years has gone pretty quick. I still remember the wedding day, I can’t believe it’s been that long.”

Hope welcomes new principal Hope School officially welcomed their new principal Freya Hogarth and staff and pupils from her former school Nelson Central at a mihi whakatau at Hope on Friday. Freya started her new role this term, replacing long-serving principal Dave Pritchard who retired after 31 years as Hope’s principal. She had been deputy principal at Nelson Central for five years and acting principal for the last two terms after joining the school in 2008, following two years at Tahunanui School. Although Freya started her teaching career in Christchurch and Auckland, she was born and raised in the Nelson region and welcomed
the chance to return “home” in 2006. Freya says she is also looking forward to teaching at a country school after being born and raised in French Pass. “I grew up in French Pass and did correspondence school before going to Nayland College for year 12 and 13, so I always wanted to come back and teach here. I’m also a country girl at heart so I’m sure I can make the transition from a city school like Nelson Central to Hope - I know how important a country school is to the community.” Freya, who represented New Zealand in canoe polo for 10 years, is married with an 18-month-old daughter Georgia.

Velodrome gets another big boost
The fundraising campaign for the Saxton Velodrome has passed the halfway mark, with the Lion Foundation confirming a $70,000 grant to help build the $1.6million cycling complex at Saxton Field. The project is being funded by Nelson city and Tasman district councils, which are contributing 80 per cent of the total, and the Saxton Velodrome Trust which has to raise the remaining $320,000. The latest grant brings the total raised to $190,000 with Lion Foundation spokesperson Jeff Rackley saying they are proud to support such a magnificent community facility. “No more holding your breath when your loved ones are out on training rides on busy highways,” Jeff says. “From now on controlled cycling and endless kilometres in safe surroundings. “All age groups can train and race to their heart’s content - magic” Work started on the site in June but has been delayed by weather conditions. It’s expected that earthworks will resume this month and the embankment shaping will begin before December - the project is on track to be completed before Christmas next year. Trustee Rob Ford says it’s very positive that the funding applications are being well received. “I think it reflects that funders can see this is a real community facility that will be suitable for cyclists of all ages and abilities, not just elite cyclists. It offers some really exciting possibilities for road safety training, for kids learning to ride and for people with disabilities or who are recovering from injury.” The Trust has set up a give-a-little page on its website www.saxtonvelodrome.com for anyone who wants to make a donation to the project.

Mall Chat
It’s a busy time of year at the Richmond Mall. There are a few construction projects that will be finishing up in the next few months or so and there’s been plenty happening on the promotion front, with almost $20,000 given away in vouchers. Here’s a quick overview of what’s happening at Richmond Mall this month: • Our promotion to give a $10 voucher to every customer who spent $100 or more in any store [excluding supermarkets] was a massive success. We gave away $18,000 in $10 vouchers. You loved it, and to be honest, it was a bit more than we expected to give away. However, we are very pleased with the outcome and it is reflecting in the stores’ turnovers. • We also gave a $500 voucher to Vicky McLean and another to Karen Wright. Both were winners of our Try-it-on-and -win promotion. • Construction-wise we have plenty on the go. At the Paper Plus entrance you may have noticed that we’re doing work to the Pak n Save loading bay. This will tidy up the area so you won’t have to look into skips and pallets. That project is due to be finished by the end of October and then we’ll get about 30 car parks back. • The Pak n Save extension on the other side of the mall is on track and due to be finished by mid-November. • A reminder that the mall is the gathering point for NZ Anthem One Voice on Sunday 25 October 2015 at 12 noon. “Together let’s sing our National Anthem” • The current painted walkway will be replaced with a permanent raised walkway and an additional walkway towards Fresh Choice. This will make the area safer for children and prevent cars from driving across. This work will start early November with an expected completion date before Christmas. • Richmond Mall is also welcoming a new tenant into the mall this month. Phone Zone will occupy space in the common area in between Postie and Farmers. • Finally, thank you to all the kids who took part in our pizza-making promotion during the school holidays. We had around 100 kids every day of the holidays, it was great to have so many enjoying the mall on their holidays.

Junk art? Can someone explain who authorised dumping that ugly lump of stone outside the museum in Hardy St? It looks rather like an offering a dinosaur left behind by mistake - vaguely disgusting. Why is Nelson being overrun with junk art - and why aren't we being consulted? Regards, Morag. Caravan fire at Club Waimea: RIP... Feel so sorry for those in emergency services picking up the pieces. Kelly Watson. OMG poor families involved RIP dear soul. Angela Collins. Can’t like or share this as it happened to a family member nearly two years ago, RIP to whoever passed. Sue Baigent. I followed that fire engine tonight I wondered where it went. Celia Zumbach. Oh, my god. Very, very sad. Love to their family and friends. Danielle Blair Patterson. Three local swimming holes in the country’s top 10: You’d have to pay me to swim at Lake Rotoiti with all those eels! Christine Roberts.

Looks like Lake Rotoroa jetty. They’re very similar...Guess the best swimming hole would be Lee Valley and surrounds. Reenie McManus. My little secret one in Golden Bay, not far from Takaka. Never seen anyone else there. Can’t wait to swim in it again in early January hopefully. James Dale. Brook dealings a concern: Nelson Council’s dealings with the Brook Community are concerning, demonstrating a contempt for democracy. Once again, the council is tap dancing around statutory requirements. It is time it was challenged and held to account, as should have happened in many previous years, when, for example, it blatantly disregarded its own noise laws. The council abuses the term 'technical', employing it as in "don't worry your pretty little head" and "Just sign here. I never read the small print myself ". A proposed change of land status is no technicality! No matter how much Council officers would like to conceal their chicanery, the cat is out of the bag and yeowling springtime. An appeal to the Environment Court on resource consents may be the way to go. Dan McGuire.
Flag options fly at Nelson business: I read in the paper about the new Zealand flag, I also read about nurses wanting equal pay, I know which I think is more important. The nurses work very hard for their dollar while a new flag may look good but does not serve any real purpose, so I say use the $29 million (which is not the final price for a new flag) to show we appreciate the work done in our hospitals by these devoted nurses. Not a lot will be lost if we don't have a new flag, but if our nurses are offered better pay in Australia who would blame them for moving over. George Barker. Great. So pleased Nelson is flying flag choices. Pam Eddy. I like changing the union jack for a silver fern. Keep the colours, keep the stars, the more I see that flag the more I like it. It says more about modern NZ. Craig Phillips These should not be flown, none are any good. Nothing wrong with the one we have, total waste of our money. If [John] Keys [sic] wants to find out our reaction then he should pay for it out of his money. Colin Appleton. The dynamic duo Good things come in twos, and the two people picked to be the new Club Waimea management team, Jan Phipps and Mike Carter, are both passionate about doing their bit to create a bigger and brighter future for the club. Jan and Mike have had a long involvement with Club Waimea, which was part of the reason they decided to take on the positions. Ideas for the betterment of the club were also a driving force and being in management roles means they are in the best position to unlock the clubs potential and promote it to the community. While most of the club’s members will know Jan as the most recent president, Mike is also no stranger to running Club Waimea after being the manager from 2004-2006. With a particular skill for administration, Mike is now the club’s secretary and administration manager while Jan is the marketing and functions manager. “My strengths are in admin, so I thought that having someone to do the other side of it was an excellent combination, because you get different personalities and you need an outgoing person to do the things that Jan wants to do while mine’s an introverted personality,” says Mike.
From overseeing the caravan park, to the piles of paper work, there’s no doubt its not an easy job and often takes up more hours than its meant to but both Mike and Jan agree they’re hours well spent. “It’s a good job, it’s a tremendous environment here, I thought that when I was here the first time,” says Mike. Anything that isn’t paperwork is Jan’s area of expertise which includes helping people with any information about Club Waimea, dealing with any complaints, assisting people who want to book functions and, of course, promoting all that the club has to offer people. One thing that Mike and Jan will be looking at doing soon is spicing up Friday nights at the club. While there are no details set in stone at the moment, it will be something to keep an eye out for. If you haven’t already welcomed Jan and Mike into their managerial positions, make sure you do so when you see them next. With Club Waimea offering so much with its restaurant, weekly activities and friendly atmosphere, Jan and Mike say it will be a pleasure making people more aware of the fantastic facility.

normal working environment.” Nelson Forest Managers crew member Matt Stuart says the training day, which was a requirement for their national certificates, was important for improving their fire-fighting skills. “We often get called out to fires so we need to enhance our understanding of fire-fighting,” Matt says. “We have some guys who have been in forestry for years and are very experienced, but we also have new guys who need to get up to speed.” Principal rural fire officer Ian Reade says the fire danger was still escalating and they had already attended a number of “incidents” this season. The latest scare last week involved a person “with the brains of a chocolate fish” burning some rubbish on a property near Marahau surrounded by dense bush. “They started it with petrol and the flames went sky high, so a neighbour phoned 111,” Ian says. “They didn’t have a permit and the property was surrounded by manuka, but luckily it didn’t catch.”

A fire-fighting training day for forestry contractors from around Nelson and Tasman had an extra edge to it with the dry, windy conditions ramping up the fire danger in the region’s forests. The Waimea Rural Fire Authority put about 50 silviculture workers through their paces at Eves Valley last Friday to sharpen up their fire fighting skills leading into summer. Crews learned a range of firefighting techniques using portable pumps and dams, and practised filling up monsoon buckets slung under a hovering helicopter flown by Helicharters Nelson. “We hold these training days for the contractors every year, but it could be even more important this year,” deputy principal rural fire officer Nathan Freeman says. “It’s getting very dry out there and we are monitoring the situation very closely.” Nathan says the forestry crews play a big role in fighting forest fires and needed to “validate” their skills every two years as part of their training requirements. The crews provide valuable support for the region’s volunteer rural fire forces and were often an initial response to fires because they worked in the forests. “If there is a large fire we call these guys in to help us out,” Nathan says. “They provide support and backup and are really valuable because they know the land - it’s their

Just a thought... On receiving his silver-tasselled cap for his 100th game representing the All Blacks, one of the things Ma’a Nonu said was this, “It was an amazing honour for me to receive my cap from Richie. He’s one of those inspiring players I look up to, so I’m just really stoked.” Ma’a typifies one of the qualities us Kiwis love in our heroes, that of humility. Us Kiwis like humility – we don’t like it when people get up themselves. Ma’a was stoked with the support he got from his team members and Kiwis in general. I venture to say that part of the reason he gets that support from us is not about rugby. Rather it is about his ordinariness. We like him! I’ve been thinking about heroes. Who are our heroes? What makes someone stand out from the crowd? Here are some of my
heroes, in no particular order. A friend of mine lives with serious depression. She puts one foot in front of the other each day despite feeling like rubbish a fair bit of the time. A teacher Susan Gill, persistently crafts lessons and interesting Church on the Hill. learning activities to grab the attention of pupils from a range of backgrounds and learning abilities. A single parent struggles to make ends meet financially yet finds the resources to send her kids to camp. She is also generous with produce from her garden and shares her time – doing things that need to be done for others and for our church.
An administrator sets sound business systems in place and monitors them diligently in the organisation they work for. A visitor calls to see her elderly friend. Her friend is sad and confused and very hard to talk to. Yet the faithful visitor calls each week. A bloke works hard in the orchards. His mates give him a hard time because he is always last to lunch and smoko. He just has to finish that last wee job and finish it properly. These are some of my heroes. Not one of them would describe themselves as a hero. They will never receive a silver-tasselled cap. They may not even get a ‘thank you’. Yet these every-day heroes are fulfilling their God-given ability to be the people they are called to be in the ordinary circumstances of life.

Nicola Pons Nicola is taking appointments now. Pop in and see her for a new Summer style. Hours: Mon 9-4, Tue 9-8, Wed 9-6, Thurs 9-8 Fri 9-5, Sat by appointment.
Scissor Art welcomes Nicola Ever since she was “knee high to a grasshopper,” Nicola Pons has wanted to be a hair dresser and one day, own her own business. Having been a stylist for 24 years now, Nicola has finally crossed the last item off her to do list after taking over management of Brightwater’s salon, Scissor Art. For Nicola the convenience of working so close to home is bettered only by the fact she is managing such a talented team of stylists. “I always thought that if this salon came up for sale I would be right in there because I love the area, my kids go to Brightwater School and it’s so easy and handy.” While Nicola is looking forward to meeting and getting to know the local clients, the rest of the team will be staying exactly the same. The salon is impressive with its modern, stylish and welcoming atmosphere. With a long held passion for hairdressing, the one thing Nicola enjoys most about what she does is the transformations that can be made simply with some scissors and colour. “I love the fact that I can make people feel really special,
New owner Nicola Pons is looking forward to working with the local Brightwater community and the talented stylists at Scissor Art.
I love the conversations you have with clients about their life and being able to create different styles as well.” Nicola is no stranger to operating a business, before becoming a business owner herself, she worked at Aboki Hairdressers in Nelson for 16 years as part of the management team. Her role involved overseeing 18 stylists and Nicola says it has been quite a change moving from a big salon to a small
community salon, but she is enjoying every minute of it. Now is the perfect time to visit the friendly team at Scissor Art and welcome Nicola into her new business. For cuts, colours and everything in between you can trust Scissor Art to leave you feeling and looking great. Give them a call today on 542 3839 to make an appointment. Business Update. Adv.

SPORT Volleyballers dominate college sports awards www.shuttersport.co.nz
Volleyballers dominated the Waimea College senior sports prize-giving, taking out all the top awards in a year that produced some outstanding achievements across a diverse range of sports. The girls’ senior A volleyball team was named the Sports Team of the Year at last Friday’s awards while two of its
players, Hannah Davenhill and Georgia Davies, were joint-winners of the Glue Family Cup for the Greatest Achievement in Sport. Volleyball’s clean sweep was completed when Holly Chandler won the 1969 Girls Prefect Cup for Girls General Excellence in Sport and captain of the boy’s senior A team Jacob King received
the Errol Beattie Cup for All Round Excellence in Sport. Waimea’s sports co-ordinator Daniel Hobbs says volleyball’s cleansweep wasn’t surprising considering the success of their teams and players at national and international level. Hannah and Georgia both played for the senior New Zealand team while the girls’ team finished second at the national secondary schools champs. However, Daniel says the awards also
reflected the diversity of sport enjoyed by students at Waimea College. Sam McKenzie and Caitlin Delaney (swimming), Bridie Edwards (running), Amiee Book and Lauryn Hippolite (basketball), Mardi McBride (softball) and Tane McDonald (beach volleyball) joined Hannah, Georgia, Holly and Jacob as finalists for the Glue Family Cup. Daniel says the success of all the school’s top athletes is also tribute to the school’s coaches, managers, volunteers and parents who help the students.

Nelson's top moto trial riding family is expecting some seriously tough terrain, and even tougher competition, when it heads north this weekend for the national championships in Taranaki. Father Stephen Oliver and his sons Pete and Nicholas have been in good form, winning their respective classes in the three-round South Island champs which concluded in Dunedin earlier this month. Stephen, 55, won his eighth, and sixth consecutive, masters title, Nicholas, 26, won the pro class while Peter, 24, took out the A grade champs. However, Stephen says they will need to change up a couple of gears if they are to be competitive at the nationals, especially in the pro class where New Zealand's top internationals Jake Whitaker and John Haynes will be riding.
Nicholas Oliver rides his bike over an obstacle during the final round of the SI Moto Trials champs in Dunedin. A seven-time national champion, Jake will be especially hard to beat and Stephen says Nicholas will need to ride well just to make the podium. The South Island riders will also have to contend with the "very different and difficult terrain" on the Taranaki courses which typically have lots
of native bush and tree roots. Riders are required to negotiate the extreme courses and obstacles without falling off or touching their feet on the ground - they receive penalties for these faults and the lowest score wins. "We have good riders here but we'll be at a disadvantage because the North Islanders will be more used to the terrain, says Stephen. “It's going to be hard and it will be even harder if it rains because the tree roots will get really slippery - it will sort the guys out." The three-day nationals will be held on three different courses with riders negotiating 10 sections, four times each day. That means most competitors will be riding five hours a day. Stephen says Team Oliver has been well supported by new sponsors Fulton Hogan and New Zealand Classic Motorcycles.

Waimea teacher to represent Japan Multi-talented Nelson sportswoman Jess Drummond has already represented New Zealand in touch and next weekend she will be making her international sevens debut in Australia - for Japan. Jess, 23, who has been a member of the New Zealand touch team since 2010, has also represented Tasman and Canterbury at sevens and played for the Canterbury Tactix under-23 netball team. Earlier this year, she played for New Zealand at the Touch World Cup in Australia and this week she heads back across the Tasman to play for Japan in the Central Coast Sevens in Kanwai, New South Wales. Jess, who is a teacher at Waimea Intermediate School, is eligible for the Japanese team as one of three international players. Although Jess admits she would love to be playing for New Zealand at the tournament, she says it's a great opportunity to impress the national selectors. "Japan is a good side and it's a chance for me to play at the top level. We play New Zealand in the first game so I'll be putting my best foot forward to show them what I have got." Jess will have two days to train with her new team-mates before the two-day tournament starts on Saturday. The Japanese women are the Asian

"I'm just hoping that they speak good English, otherwise it could be hard getting to know the moves," she says. Jess says another challenge will be making the transition from touch to the more physicallydemanding sevens. "It will be hard, but I have been training for sevens for the last two months and I played rugby tens for Waimea this season, so I should be fine." The Central Coast Sevens will be an ideal lead-up to her next assignment, the Super Series in Taupo the following weekend. She is one of 60 players
selected for the series which is effectively a trial for the New Zealand squad. Although Jess is clearly in the frame for national honours, she knows the competition is hotter than ever now that sevens will be at the Rio Olympics. "It's my second year playing sevens and I've represented Tasman and Canterbury and now I'm going to the Super Series, so that's made me realise I can compete at that level. But I'll have to take the next step up because there are so many good players around, especially with touch players and even netballers switching to sevens to try and get to Rio."

Bridget Budget answers your questions
Q: We are struck in a rut
financially. We seem to have enough to get by but we are not getting ahead. What advice can you give us? A: Getting ahead financially is a goal for many people. Here are some tips to get you started. Track your spending. Check your receipts, statements or use an app. Find where your money is going. Categorise your spending- e.g. food, takeaways, clothing, car costs. Tally up each category for the week/month/ year. You might find some surprises. Identify areas where you can trim the fat- no need to totally cut out something you love. Trimming a little from many areas can free up a lot of money. Use the left over money for your goals (e.g. paying debt, saving for house, retirement savings). You can make a plan/budget for your money at Sorted.org.nz. Keep it realistic. Don’t forget the fun stuff! Remind yourself of your financial goals often. This is your motivation for change. Review your budget regularly, things change. Need more helP? Call for a free one-one confidential appointment with a budget adviser. www.nelsonbudget.co.nz
