Handing over a fundraising cheque at Filco on Saturday became more significant and a moving moment with Mike Gile’s unexpected presence providing tangible evidence of the importance of fundraising for the cause. A rescued patient, he especially drove over from Blenheim with his wife and children to meet some of the crew. To both thank them and acknowledge the important work they do. The crew, although not those onsite for Mike’s incident, enjoyed the chance to meet Mike and have a chat with him. “We rarely get the opportunity to hear about the patients after we’ve dropped them at the hospital,” says Nelson-Marlborough Rescue Helicopter crew member and paramedic, Jeff Hughes. Jeff was on the mission that rescued Mike and went on to say that it’s always great to meet up with patients even if they weren’t directly
your patient. People want to say thanks and have that connection. On the 17th July, Mike, his wife Roshelle and their cockatoo Crackers were on the Smiths Overbridge when they became involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle. Mike was the most severely injured with multiple bone fractures included three in his lower back and pelvis along with head injuries, and was immediately transported by the Nelson-Marlborough Rescue Helicopter to Wellington Hospital. Roshelle was taken to Blenheim hospital in an ambulance and the Crackers was taken by a first-on-thescene member of the public to the vets. The cockatoo’s injuries included half of her beak broken off and a claw too sore to stand on. Mike says Crackers’ beak is growing back on its own and her claw is now fine. Mike’s injuries are taking longer to heal as he continues to wear a boot on his right leg. During the presentation to the rescue unit, Mike be-

came understandably emotional remembering how close it had been to a tragedy and the difference the unit has now made to both him and his family. Members of the Top of the South Harley Owners Group and crew from Nelson-Marlborough Emergency Helicopter were meeting to hand over a cheque from funds raised by the group from a 160-strong motorcycle ride a few weeks ago. This was the 8th year the ride has taken place with multiple clubs, on various brands and types of motorcycles, riding together to raise money for the rescue helicopter. John Gray, treasurer and secretary of the Top of the South Harley Owners Group said his brother Tom came up with the idea for the recipient of their fundraising because of the number of times the helicopter comes to motorcyclist’s rescue. I’m going tramping in the weekend. I will probably go to Mount Arthur because it has a nice wee hut and a beautiful view.
I’ll have a few beers with the boys. That’s all I can think about that I’ll be doing for the weekend.
Based on past years, I’m not making plans because the weather is usually bad for most the weekend. Hopefully there will be some sun though.
The weeds are taking over the world, so I’ll be gardening. And chilling out with the children.

Nine to 11-year olds from Ranzau and Brightwater schools are at the A&P showgrounds this week learning confidence and life skills to help keep them safe. The safety skills course, now in its fifth year, seeks to also to prevent incidents from happening in the first place. “It’s a learning event that the students have so much fun doing,” says Clued Up Kids coordinator, Jo Perrett. About 560 students from across the Nelson Tasman region will be participating on different days throughout the week. Students are broken into groups of 8-10 for hands-on activities like the ‘shaky house’ for practising earthquake drills. There’s also a smoky fire simulation that teaches children how to react during a house fire, as well as demonstrations on water safety, quad bikes, how to interact with dogs, how visible a bicycle is to a truck, and first aid. The event brings all the different agencies together in one place with each event manned by professionals from their field. They deliver their information in short snappy mes-

Garin College students dressed in pink to celebrate Pink Shirt Day. This is a day dedicated to working together as communities, schools, whanaus, and workplaces to stop bullying and promote positive relationships. Student Jack Hateley said that he had been a victim of verbal bullying at primary school and it had drained his confidence. Things were better for him now and he attributed that to the kindness of good people. He and Amelia Tye talked of the importance of ignoring bullies. “They want a reaction, so don’t give them one,” Amelia said. “No-one should be bullied. School should be a safe place,” said Jaanti Harrison. Bullying still happens, but it is good that there is becoming more aware-
ness within our society. “It’s important to stand up for yourself,” she says, “and the ability to do that comes from having confidence in who you really are and not worrying too much what others think of you.” Well-being co-ordinator for the college, Jen Dalton, said that New Zealand has the third highest rate of bullying in the developed world. “No school is perfect but that is a terrible statistic, and we need to promote kindness and live kindly,” she said. It is important to her that kindness is the expected behaviour and if there is unkindness, students should expect to be talked to about it. Pink Shirt Day’s motto ‘speak up’ is referring to the importance of communities having Garin College students Amelia Tye and Jack Hateley conversations and also asking wore pink to raise awareness of bullying. Nelson Matters
It has been a huge privilege being Nelson’s MP. I have had an amazing opportunity to work with thousands of Nelsonians who make this place such an entrepreneurial, caring, creative and successful community. I have given the role my everything and acknowledge the generous support of my staff, party volunteers and family. I congratulate Rachel Boyack on her election as Nelson’s MP in Labour’s landslide victory across New Zealand. She deserves extra commendation for becoming Nelson’s first woman MP. It is another important step alongside our mayor Rachel Reese in the ongoing journey of ensuring equality in our community.
now he’s letting his self-taught skills lead him down paths which incorporate images of people, weird creatures and nature. His mum, who used to be an artist, taught him the basics when he was yunger but now takes a super- proud mum role. River’s dad is helping to purchase the necessary tools and drive him to the site. River will take over the rest of it, from sanding down to applying the paint in his own special way. Keep an eye open on Salisbury Road near the set of lights close to Waimea College, as River’s artwork takes on life over the next week or so.

River Day, a 17-year-old college student is bringing the Chorus box at 98 Salisbury Road, Richmond, to life as part of an art programme. Broadband internet company Chorus are running an art programme across New Zealand to decorate their street boxes which are a little in need of having some artistic life brought to them. “I was pretty shocked when I got the email saying I had been successful,” says River. Judges from the Tasman District Council and Chorus
picked River, along with another 6 artists out of 33 local applications, to decorate the boxes across the Tasman region. Applications were open to professional and hobby artists of any age, but it was River and his artwork entitled ‘Beauty of Nature’ which was chosen to be applied to the Chorus cabinet on Salisbury Road. The cabinets, on the inside, are like mini telephone exchanges. On the outside, they are a onetoned metal box. “I don’t play games or do any sport, art is my thing,” says River. River plans to do a Bachelor of Art at NMIT in 2022, but for
The provisional election results show I have been elected to Parliament on the National’s list. I will need to await the count of 480,000 special votes and the final election result announcement on Friday, 6 November. I will have three important tasks if these results confirm my continued role as a Parliamentarian. New Zealand is facing the most difficult economic and uncertain times in a generation. There are times when Government and Parliament has little impact on people’s daily lives but this is a period of extraordinary intervention. The Covid pandemic has Government passing rushed laws, borrowing billions,
putting unprecedented limits on people’s freedoms and making huge economic decisions impacting on business. These have been necessary but require careful scrutiny. I have had the experience of helping chart New Zealand’s recovery from two previous recessions. As an experienced parliamentarian, I know how new laws can work and fail. My top priority will be constructively contributing to New Zealand’s economic recovery. I particularly want to ensure that the $150 billion being borrowed is spent wisely, a key role for the opposition. We owe it to the taxpayers of the future who will be repaying this huge debt for decades.
544 Waimea Road, Nelson
National has a huge task ahead to rebuild the trust and confidence of New Zealanders. It is always difficult to challenge a first-term Government and made more so by the extraordinary circumstances of the Christchurch Mosque attacks and the Covid emergency. But we have not helped ourselves. National needs unity and discipline. My experience in successfully rebuilding National after the 2002 election drubbing will be relevant as we recover from 2020. National’s core values of rewarding hard work and enterprise, protecting New Zealand’s freedoms, valuing family and supporting community are as relevant today as when our party was
founded 84 years ago. I will also, if confirmed as a list MP, be a voice for Nelson. I will work across party to ensure our region gets a fair share of Government resources and that our public services are improved. Nelson can only gain from having Chris Baillie, the new ACT MP, Rachel Boyack from Labour and myself all advocating for our region. I conclude in thanking everyone who voted and commend Nelson on a turnout of over 80%. We need to cherish our peaceful democracy. Politics globally is becoming more hateful and polarised. We need to work together to get through these challenging times. Advt.

Amazing donations for auction Jenny Nicholson

Railway robbery Jacqui Rawson
The Railway, a bar-restaurant on Lower Queen Street, was robbed by a male armed with a firearm in the middle of the afternoon last week. “You never know how you’re going to react because it happens so fast,” says owner of The Railway, Travis Cooper. Before owning The Railway, Travis owned the historic Hurunui Hotel, which is in a very remote part of North Canterbury. For the 11 years he was there he expected a robbery to happen, but it wasn’t something he had to face until he moved back to Richmond.
“My phone hasn’t stopped ringing since the incident, it wasn’t really that big a deal but I’ve appreciated everyone’s concern,” says Travis. Travis, seated beside the bar, felt someone lean into him and heard them say ‘give me some money.’ Travis thought it was one of the customers and told them to stop mucking about. The balaclava-wearing robber became verbally abusive, thrusting a bag at Travis and telling him to fill it up, while he pressed the firearm into Travis’ neck. Making a grab for some surplus takings the robber took off as Travis tried grabbing
for him, but the material of his clothing slipped through Travis’ fingers. . The robber was caught on three CCTV cameras from the bar and surrounding areas. He got into a grey Honda Ascot, registration XG6169, on the opposite side of McDonalds from The Railway and took off towards the Waimea Old Boys’ Rugby Club before being last seen heading from Church Street onto Dorset Street. Police encourage the public to contact them if they have information, or to ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
The Nelson College auction prize pool, raising money for mental health, has now exceeded $50,000 thanks to donations including last week’s generous contribution from The Audiophile. The donation is a Panasonic top-ofthe-line 4K LED smart television worth $2799 and a Yamaha musiccast sound bar with wireless sound woofer valued at $1299. The Audiophile will install these items for the auction winner. “It is very important to support the youth of today,” Daniel O’Connell from The Audiophile said. The stresses and pressures for young people are different from what he experienced in his youth. “It is a very good auction being put together,” he said. He liked the opportunity to support a local charity, and as an old boy of Nelson College chose to support them.
Tickets, which include canapes and drinks, are available through the Nelson College office, contact 03 548 3099. Costs are $400 for a table of 10, and single tickets are $45. Tickets can also be paid for online. Proceeds from the auction will go to The Key to Life Charitable Trust, which aims to effect a social change to how people view mental health and suicide. Guest of honour Mike King says all funds raised will be used in the local community. The Nelson College Auction will be held Thursday, October 29, at 7 pm. If you’d like to offer your support in some way, even if it’s to help out on the night, please phone Steve Page on 0275 449 448. A full list of auction items will appear in the Weeklies. If you or anyone you know needs to reach out for help, Lifeline, 0800 543 354, and Suicide Crisis Helpline, 0508 828 865 are both available 24/7. Or, if it’s an emergency, call 111.

Peter Burland last week won the Ministry of Health’s national volunteer award for outstanding achievement for his work with the Brain Injury Association. In nominating Peter, Rachel Gordon from Brain Injury Association, said that he works tirelessly within our community to raise awareness of brain injury and to support others going through the journey. He also co-hosts a fortnightly radio show, through Fresh FM. “If I have helped one person then my life has been worth-
while,” Peter said. He’s pleased that the award will help people to hear about Brain Injury Association. Peter has experienced firsthand the challenges following a brain injury. In 1985, while running on a beach, he fell, hitting his head on a rock. In 2005 he suffered another traumatic brain injury after a fall at work. He feels very lucky not to be in a wheelchair as there can be a cumulative effect from multiple head injuries. After discharge from hospital, people who have sustained a brain injury can feel very alone. That is when they need support
from people who understand. After the second injury Peter had that support from someone who knew what was happening to him and why he said and did things. That help inspired him to start helping, too. Peter doesn’t want his brain injury to define him or let it take over. He feels that the brain injury is the best thing to happen to him because it has changed the way he thinks and lives and has given him opportunities to help others. “I didn’t die, there must be still something for me to do on this earth and that’s really important to me,” he said.

Help for families Jacqui Rawson Reporter
jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Kristy Rowe started the Helping Families organisation two years ago when she saw there was a need in the community. Things have grown in leaps and bounds in providing for those families who are struggling to meet basic needs such as clothing and furniture. “Being two years down the track means we’re more known within the community, which means we’re providing more help,” says Kristy. Kristy started with a Facebook page, a rented 20ft shipping container and daydreams of working directly with national agencies already supporting families. Two and half years later, Kristy has a location, three shipping
containers owned by the organisation to transit donated items through and 6-10 volunteers helping her. She now also works closely with Plunket and Barnardos and has huge support from Richmond Rotary who provide volunteers and help to move items about. “The aim has always been to help people who need support, whatever their circumstances may be, and connect them with what they need and who they can talk to,” says Kristy. The organisation provides families with clothing, toiletries, and household items such as furniture and bedding. “We have big dreams on how we want to expand,” says Kristy. Solar panels will be first up as they have already been provided thanks to a grant from
Richmond Rotary and other support from businesses in the community which will provide the much-needed electricity and heating for the containers. The next plan is to support the Tasman area more by setting up a community space like the Victory Community Centre in Nelson. Then Kristy hopes to have a real building instead of containers, a playground, and vehicles with a trailer to transport all the stock around. “Now, for things like a trailer, we have to beg, borrow and thank our lucky stars when the begging and borrowing work,” says Kristy. Having loads of volunteers on call is another dream she’d like to see come to fruition. Please get in contact on the Helping Families Facebook page if you have any donations or are keen to volunteer.

Whitebait plentiful this season Jenny Nicholson Whitebaiters have had mixed results this season, but overall, it has been an above average season. Although the season starts in August, traditionally October to November are considered the best times to whitebait. Aaron McCorkindale, general manager of local whitebait distributor Solander, said overall volumes are higher this year and October has certainly seen bigger volumes than the previous months.
Keith Wilson has caught 3 or 4 feeds from nine or ten outings. “I’ve caught enough for a good feed today but yesterday didn’t see a single whitebait,” he said. A five-pound catch is his best this year. He said that was enough to share with his wife’s whitebaitwidow friends, those whose husbands had previously been white baiters. Dianne Feaver had the net in the car so stopped off at the river on her way to town. She hoped to get enough for a feed for tea.

FOODS WEEK Nick Dicks and Annette Bormolini were some of the Richmond Tennis Club members out while the sun shone last Saturday for their Love Tennis Open Weekend which aims to introduce tennis to a wider audience and engage people of all ages. The annual event was coupled together with another annual event, the Kelly Bowater Travel Rally Against Breast Cancer, which is a fundraiser for the National Breast Cancer Foundation NZ. Love Tennis, an open weekend nationally, had 208 clubs taking part around the country – 7 of them in the Nelson-Tasman region. All entrants to Love Tennis were able to take part in a Rally on court to raise funds for the worthy cause. There was a Roger Federer life-sized cut-out for participants to serve at on one court as well as a disused toilet to take dunny shots at on another. Photo: Jacqui Rawson.

the washing. Mow the lawns. Cook tea. Fix the gutter. Put the kids to bed. And, if you’re lucky, you might have time to watch a bit of Coro Street and have a quiet drink before hitting the hay to get energy to cope with tomorrow’s trees. Because we have so many trees in our lives it becomes very difficult to find time and energy to think about the forest, the bigger picture that helps make sense of the everyday things of life. Understanding this big picture helps you to know which trees are important, where
you are in relation to them, what your destination is, and what direction you should be going. In our busy days, I know how difficult it is to find the time to ask the big questions of life, yet alone find some answers. But surely this is one of the most important things we can do – especially for those of us who sometimes wonder whether there is more to life than going to work, mowing the lawns, and sport in the weekend. Maybe there’s some wisdom in thinking about it. You can find answers to the big questions of life at your local church, or simply have a yarn with a Christian friend.

MOUNT GAY ECLIPSE GOLD RUM OR JAGERMEISTER HERBAL LIQUEUR
JIM BEAM WHITE LABEL BOURBON
Mount Gay Eclipse Gold Rum: Eclipse is the embodiment of the Mount Gay style, body and aroma by which their Master Blender Trudiann Banker uses to blend every variety of Mount Gay Rum. For many Rum aficionados Eclipse is also the reference by which all rum should be measured.
Since 1795, Jim Beam has been crafted by the Beam family and distilled with a strong sense of family values. Seven generations later, it’s still made with those same values and aged twice as long as the law requires. Perhaps that’s why, today, Jim Beam stands as the World’s #1 Bourbon.

Elephants in Wai-iti River Jacqui Rawson Reporter
jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz
In the summer of 1928-1929, two elephants, Jumbo and his pal Tommy, used the Wai-iti River, Wakefield, to rinse off as they took a break in their travels toward the North Island. The pair were part of the Perry Brothers’ Circus on its annual New Zealand-wide tour which had started in the south and was working its way slowly northwards.
Circus elephants taking time out for a bath in the Wai-iti River in the late 1920’s. Photo: Supplied. Newspaper articles from the time tell of the progress of the circus: The Lake Wakitip Mail reported on the 4th of December, 1928, of the impressive circus of “60 people, 20 horses and ponies, 10 cages of wild animals comprising lions, tigers, leopards, hyena, wolves, Tasmanian Tiger, and many other rare animals, including Jumbo the huge elephant and his pal Tommy, the midget” coming to Queenstown. By the 3rd of January 1929, they had reached Christchurch. On the 17th of January, the New Zealand Herald reported on what could have been a disastrous incident. While making its way from Westport to Murchison, near Hawks Crag, a cage containing a lion, lioness and a tiger slipped off a trailer and rolled down a steep bank. Fortunately, a gang of railway workers was on hand and, with the aid of an elephant which had to be brought back six miles to the scene, the animals were
eventually recovered without significant damage. Sometime between the 17th and 29th of January, when they were reported performing in Wellington, the circus must have passed through Wakefield. This is when the elephants were photographed penned up beside the Methodist Church on the corner of Arrow and Edward Street, Wakefield, and bathing in the Wai-iti River. It’s believed the bathing spot was near the Pigeon Valley Bridge. George Taylor Lawrence was the photographer, and it was his grandchildren, Doug and Sally Lawrence, who gifted the photographs to the Waimea South Historical Society. George Taylor Lawrence was born in Invercargill in 1859, after his father, William Taylor Lawrence, emigrated with his wife from Herefordshire, England, in the 1850’s. In 1881, when he was 22 years of age, George was a passenger on the steam-
ship Tararua which ran aground on a reef at Waipapa Point while on a regular journey between Port Chalmers and Invercargill and later sank with a large loss of life. After two unsuccessful attempts to get passengers off the ship it was decided to try once more to send a boat, with a strong swimmer with a rope, to reach the shore. George volunteered. Despite George’s efforts, 131 people perished in this shipwreck. George was one of the 20 fortunate survivors. He had risked his life in getting a rope to shore and raising the alarm, yet ironically it was that act of courage which ultimately saved him. As he neared retirement the warmer weather of the north beckoned and, when the opportunity arose, he moved to Wakefield in 1919, aged 60.This story was first published in “Windows on Wakefield” a community newsletter for the town of Wakefield, Nelson. ‘two for one’ show this weekend and all we can say is “get there early” as the Coca Cola Fireworks night is always a crowd puller. With good fields expected in all classes and one of the best pyrotechnic displays you will see in Nelson at the end of the racing, we urge everyone to get there early to grab your seat for this huge event.
No expense is spared when it come to the big fireworks display each year and this season is no different, so thanks to the team at Coca Cola for their ongoing support with this popular event. Classes racing for Trackman Trophies are Superstocks, Stockcars, Production Saloons, Streetstocks, Three Quarter Midgets, Sidecars, Youth Ministocks and
our newest youth class, Quarter Midgets. Streetstock numbers have been impressive already this season and look to be one of the classes to watch as they gear up for their New Zealand Streetstock Grand Prix later in the year. Always the entertainers, the Streetstocks will be keen to put on a big show for the big crowd

Manager’s From the President’s Snippett pen
Roy Tomlinson It is only six weeks since I inherited the mantle of president, which virtually aligned itself with the loosening of the Covid-19 restrictions. The club is now slowly coming back to life with the facilities being utilised by not only the members but also the different community groups and commercial organisations. Wayne and the social committee have been busy arranging functions to get us back into the swing of things, (Melbourne Cup Day and a 70s night on the 7th of November.) For the 1st and 2nd Club night’s (Thursday) we had a couple of spot prizes for those in attendance – a Weber BBQ and $500 voucher from Hunting & Fishing. This week our weekly draw is $2000 and it has to be won, but you have to be in attendance to win it. Hope to see you all there.

music at the Club, with the Sun City Country Music Awards, so come along and enjoy the atmosphere. For those that enjoy an ale or two, the new Monteith’s Wayfarer Pilsner has been introduced, and if enjoy a little dabble in the two dollar shop, Monday saw a couple of new game changes, just to keep wetting the appetite. On the new carpark front, I can tell you that the consultants are progressing the development of this area, so will keep you updated as we move forward. A nearly final plan has been accepted by your board, and the cost estimations have just been received. Phew this is a biggy, but with everyone’s ongoing support, we will get this done, and then head into our next project. That’s all from me this month, so look forward to seeing you all back in the fold, plenty to get our teeth into, and plenty coming up to have heaps of FUN.
YEAH, back to Level 1 we go, a bit more freedom to do things, more people through the doors, social events going ahead, business bookings coming back in the door, such as Nelson Bowls annual prizegiving, NZMCA annual dinner (was third time lucky), Mitre 10 social occasion, Fulton Hogan 200 for breakfast and a days conference in most rooms of the building, etc. As you can see from the adverts in this spread, your social committee have been hard at work organising upcoming events, with the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday 3rd November and a great night of Nostalgia planned for 7th November. They are also wanting to get more people involved with idea’s and setting up of events etc, so come forward and have some fun. Labour weekend see’s a great lineup of country

Patrick Smith HR Patrick Smith established his human resources (HR) consultancy in 2009 after 20 plus years with Sealord Group in various HR roles including 10 years as the group’s HR manager. Today he provides a personalised service to many of the region’s locally-owned and operated businesses. Working with business owners, board chairs and company directors operating in strong commercial environments, Patrick understands the importance of having a good awareness of governance and operational priorities in providing advice on people management issues. The interpretation and application of employment and safety legislation has become more complex over the last 5 years for small and medium-sized businesses. However, many businesses often cannot justify employing their own fulltime HR specialist in-house to manage compliance, so they engage a HR consultant. From their Richmond base, Patrick Smith HR Limited provide Waimea, Motueka and Golden Bay employers with solutions for their individual businesses, be it in a commercial, industrial, or rural setting. If you need advice on workforce issues to support your business growth and mitigate risk, give Patrick a call. Richmond Night ‘n’ Day Richmond Night ‘n’ Day on Queen Street has been a family-run business for the past 25 years, with David Smolenski having owned it for the past 15 years. “Our success can be attributed to numerous factors; we’ve sold 36 first division lotto PowerBall and strike tickets over the last few years, as well as 230 second division winners. So don’t miss out on getting a ticket each week from the second luckiest store in the country! People love our great location and our convenience; we sell great food and coffee and we are open for longer hours than similar businesses., We have loads of product variety, we are a good, friendly team and we are lucky when it comes to lotto!” Richmond’s Night ‘n’ Day also offers a large range of hot food and coffee which are available from 6.30 through till 11pm, making them the perfect solution for every day lunches through to late night hunger pangs. And if you have a sweet tooth you’ll love their range of ice cream sundaes and special treats.

Get your Garden Going
aL i ec p s
With the arrival of Spring and warmer weather, when your garden begins to burst with life, it’s the ideal time to head outside and get your outdoor areas in good shape for summer entertainment and enjoyment. There are numerous stores in Richmond which are well stocked with gardening supplies and friendly staff who can give you sound advice.
Place for Plants Whatever you are thinking of doing, come in and see us at Place for Plants for advice, plants, garden care or just a good old garden chat. We have all your gardening needs and we pride ourselves on offering excellent service. To create a fabulous Edible Garden, we recommend you dig your soil over and mix in lots of organic compost and sheep pellets before planting your summer veggies or sowing your seeds. Where your flower garden is concerned, keep dead-heading flowering annuals in early spring, and feed with a liquid food to prolong flowering. Seedlings of hardy summer annuals can be planted out in the garden, it’s also a good time to plant your camelias now, and start feeding roses with rose fertiliser. For more information, visit Place for Plants Retail Nursery, 304 Main Road Hope, or go to www. placeforplants.co.nz. We know plants because we grow plants for Nelson.

Fireworks for speedway opening Jody Scott
Speedway Reporter editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway bursts into action on Saturday night with its annual Coca-Cola Fireworks display. It will double up with the Trackman Trophy night held over from the rained-out opening meeting. The new clay surface has proved successful with four unofficial lap records broken, including Connor Rangi claiming the fastest ever lap on the track, going round in just 11.38 seconds. The junior club is back up and running for kids aged up to 12-years-old with brand-new T-shirts for club members, just $20 gets a season pass and shirt thanks to Lift and Shift. Nelson’s New Zealand stock car champion Ben Smith also set a lap record at the second practice;
The 1NZ of Nelson’s Ben Smith went under the lap record at practice. Photo supplied he has spent the off-season giving the car a good tidy up as he prepares to defend his title at Napier in January. The new grade Quarter Midgets
will be racing, the class is for the youngest drivers who are aged from eight-to-15-years old. Most of the drivers are still aged in single figures and it’s a great way to
start out their speedway careers. Some of the Youth Ministocks have moved up to the TQ grade, it will be good to see how they measure up to the seasoned driv-
ers. The TQ’s topped the roll-over tally last year so expect plenty of action. There are a couple of additional Super Stock drivers, Anthony McKenzie returning and Josh Nell stepping up to the class this year in the iconic ex-Jared Gray machine. The Street Stocks are big on numbers and looking forward to their New Zealand Grand Prix here in January. This Saturday’s meeting with be when most are at their best presentation, before the bumpers and panels start getting bent from the season’s racing. The Coca-Cola fireworks display is the only professional display in the Tasman district, once again Nelson Speedway plans to light up the sky and end the show with a bang. Racing begins at 6pm Saturday and gates open at 5pm.

Century sparks Wanderers, as rugby season celebrated Premier cricket got underway a week late for the WanderersMotueka team, in ideal conditions at Ngawhatu sports field on Saturday, a picturesque setting in Stoke, against Nelson College 1st XI. Although the early morning light rain caused a delay of an hour, Nelson College chose to bowl first and restricted the combined side to 178 for 7 in the allotted 45 overs. Harsh Visavadiya made an unbeaten 115, including nine fours and seven sixes, contributing 65 percent of the team total, with only Hayden Ingham (10) and Boe Banford (18) making double figures, although two run outs did restrict some contributions. 178 was certainly an acceptable total and so it proved, but, with The successful recipients from Division 2 Wanderers team that “cleaned up” at awards night. The overall best wine was awarded to Eric Arnold of Nelson for his Medium Red Berry. Waimea’s Tom Ingham is up for a new challenge in his basketball career. Tom will be part of the Tasman Heat 3x3 team which will compete in Invercargill next month. “It’s something brand-new for me,” Tom says of the concept. “However, it’s an exciting one and something that I’m looking forward to trying.” Tom was a stand-out for the Nelson Giants in the NBL this season and is keen to keep the momentum going. “It’s been an odd season, but this is a chance for all of us to play the sport we love.” Tom will be joined by the returning duo of Sam Dempster and Bronson Beri, who both sat out the NBL campaign in Auckland. “The three of us have been in Nelson representative teams together since we were kids, so the combination is there,” Tom says. “It’s a fast game, so I think knowing how each other plays and being familiar with that will be positive. “We are going there to win it,” Tom says. “There’s no point in looking at it any other way. We are certainly Tom Ingham will be an important cog for the Tasman Suns in their 3x3 basketball campaign. Photo: Supplied. capable.”
