Tasman’s turn to play host Nelson turned it on for the Italians yesterday, providing beautiful weather and a fantastic atmosphere for their first Rugby World Cup game in the city, against Russia. This week it’s our turn. The United States, adopted by Richmond, play against Italy in Nelson this coming Tuesday. The Eagles, featuring Richmond’s own Junior Sifa, will be based at Grand Mecure Monaco Resort before the game and will train at Saxton Field. Richmond will celebrate their arrival with a street parade, sevens rugby tournament, block party and tailgate party - all planned in the days before the game as part of the Richmond Festival. Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne says he is right in behind the Richmond Festival and is urging residents to come out and support it. Organisers have been working for a year on bringing something different and unique to help Richmond leverage off the biggest event to hit our country and they have certainly done that. The Richmond Festival kicks off this Sunday with the Tasman Sevens Invitational Tournament at Jubilee Park. Teams from all over the world will be playing, so go down and check it out. On Monday, the Main St parade at 12noon will be followed by a Block Party at Sundial Square from 5pm -- think Last of the Summer Fair on steroids. Then Tuesday, game day, fans are encouraged to head to the All Star Tailgate Party at the A&P Showgrounds on Lower Queen St. The party kicks off at 2pm and will run until 7pm. A bus service, taking fans to the game and back to Richmond, will leave from the party. So not only will it be a heap of fun, the tailgate party is a great way to get to the game and back. Tasting Nelson a ‘perfect’ way to spend a Saturday If you were asked to explain the taste of Nelson, how would you describe it? Emma McCashin thinks of “the sea air ... salty with a hoppy aftertaste, well it is the Craft Brewing Capital of New Zealand.” Taste Nelson, held at Founders Park on Saturday September 24, “combines all the tastiest, and best, bits of Nelson”, food, wine, beer, seafood, fresh produce, culinary delights, arts, crafts and local performing talent. It’s a festival, fair and expo “all rolled into one.” It’s also a family-friendly event with a dedicated kids’ area so you know whilst you’re sampling the delights, they’ll have plenty to entertain themselves with too. Taste Nelson has a real family focus to it. The Railway at Founders will be running, there will be a free Ferris wheel, bouncy castle and face painting as well as lots of other fun stuff for the kids to do. It’s an affordable, fun day out for the young and old and those with families, says Emma. “We’ve tried to keep the ticket prices affordable, getting a pre-sale means

To achieve this Emma says they need
people to come along and support this event. “So if people want to keep Taste Nelson around, they should come along rain or shine.” The organisers are hoping for some fabulous Nelson sunshine but if it rains Emma reckons “just bring your gummies and umbrella and we’ll just squeeze everyone in the Grainery and in the big music marquee.”

Local businesses gets behind USA for cup clash Richmond businesses are right behind our USA Eagles, preparing for this Monday’s parade down Queen St. Our Waimea Weekly camera snapped just some of the local retailers that are getting behind the event, which will bring the Rugby World Cup to our doorstep. Rumour has it that several players from the US team will be involved in the parade and so Richmond businesses and residents are being encouraged to come out and support them during the parade. Retailers spoken to by the Weekly say they are looking forward to the festivities. The United States rugby team plays Italy this coming Tuesday night at Trafalgar Park in Nelson. Italy played their first game at the ground last night against a brave Russian team. The parade starts at 12 noon.

Local players shine on international stage Kahn Fotuali’i doesn’t need to be reminded about beating Australia in the build up to the Rugby World Cup. The former Tasman Makos star halfback says that result will give Samoa plenty of encouragement and belief as they tackle rivals Fiji and world champions South Africa, needing a win in both of the remaining Pool D games to qualify for the playoffs. Kahn is one of a number of players with Nelson connections involved in competing for rugby’s biggest prize including; All Black Ben Franks and his Motueka-born brother Owen, United States of America centre Junior Sifa, and Samoan prop Sakaria Taulafo, while fellow Samoans Ti’i Paulo and Filipo Levi have both represented the Tasman Makos. Samoas rise in world rugby, including the shock 32-23 win over the Wallabies in July and the player depth the tiny nation of 180,000 has developed, gave many pundits hope that the Manu Samoa would make their way out of the pool of death, until Sunday’s 17-10 loss to Wales in Hamilton. “It was a bit gutting, but beating them [Australia] in the build up gives us plenty of confidence that we can beat those top tier teams,” says Kahn. “South Africa is another team though and we’ve got to come in with the right mind-set and the right game plan and stick to it.”
But a mouth-watering clash with traditional rivals Fiji awaits the world champions and 29 year-old says the side is strictly focussed on this Sunday in Auckland. “It will be my first time playing against the Fijians. It’s not going to be easy, this tournament is exciting and the competition is close.” After representing Nelson Bays and the Tasman Makos, Kahn went on to play for the Crusaders and switched provinces to Hawkes Bay. But he has since signed a contract with Welsh Magners League side Ospreys and got a first hand experience of their physicality when he played against Wales on the weekend. “It’s going to be a new challenge and new adventure. I met some of the guys after the match, so that was pretty cool.” Without the same funding and sponsorship opportunities available in New Zealand, Kahn, who scored in the opening game against Namibia, says playing more tests against the world’s powerhouses is the best chance Samoa has to develop further, and there’s no better place than during the Rugby World Cup. “We’re doing what we can with the resources we have and it’s definitely going in the right place, just getting that experience and getting used to playing under pressure that will be key.”

Tickets still available for USA v Italy clash If you want to watch Italy play the United States this coming Tuesday, all advice is: “get in quick”. If the walk up crowd to last night’s capacity crowd for the Italy v Russia game
is anything to go by, demand will be huge and the match will be a sell-out. Earlier this week RWC announced more than 12,000 tickets had been sold to the US v Italy game, with only 15,000

piece of the region’s history. And what better way than at the Nelson Rugby Club’s re-enactment game with Nelson College played at the Botanics Reserve, replicating the 18th century game - the first official rugby match in New Zealand.

Hope Primary School held its annual fundraiser over the weekend under blazing sunshine and with equally-bright painted faces. The horse rides and the bouncy castle proved popular, as did the animal zone, with everything from ducklings and rabbits, to sheep, miniature ponies and a calf in attendance. The volunteers at the face-painting stall did an amazing job say organisers; everywhere you looked you would see a butterfly, a cat or Spiderman. There was also something for the parents, with silent auctions and raffles, produce stalls, as well as a trash ‘n treasure stall selling items donated by the community, all the proceeds going to the school. Tapawera’s founding fire chief remembered Tapawera Volunteer Fire Brigade’s founding chief was laid to rest following a private funeral service where he was farewelled by friends, family and brigade members. A day at the Weekly
After spending a day as a photographer at the Nelson Weekly, 15 year-old Chelcie Phillips had acted well above her age – until she sat down for her end-of-day interview and was asked the best part of her day: “oh my god, meeting the Italian rugby team, I can’t wait to tell my friends,” she squealed. Chelcie was at Nelson Weekly as part of Waimea College’s work watch scheme where students in Year 10 have the opportunity to work a day at a local business before deciding on what subjects to take next year. Chelcie says photography is one subject she is interested in because her mum is a wedding photographer. During her day at the Weekly she took photos for an advertising feature, street talk, file photos and, of course, the Italian rugby team when they met students at St Joseph’s School. Chelcie says using the professional cameras and seeing how the office worked were also highlights for the day. “It was fun, I really enjoyed seeing how it worked and what it’s like to work for a newspaper.”

Police hunt liquor thief Between Saturday September 3 and Monday, September 5, a number of Nelson and Richmond liquor stores were targeted by a shoplifter. The person has been described as a male european, skin head, approximately six feet tall, solid and may have tattoos on his neck, nose and forearms. Nelson police are keen to identify the person recorded on security footage so as they are able to speak to him about the thefts. And there was a flood. One village was destroyed – it never recovered. The other village survived with only minor damage. Too many people today underestimate the value of weekly church attendance – why not go to a local church – they are friendly.

Pinnacle House is where the heart is
A day home for young people with special needs has given participants “a real opportunity at life,” says its manager Carol Burson. Pinnacle House was set up as a day home for people with special needs once they finish school. They now get further education and a chance to experience real occupations along the way. A ministry of Grace Church, Pinnacle House has officially been operating for the past two years and is the brainchild of director Linda Gill. Linda’s daughter Lisa was nearing the end of her school life, and Linda was thinking of options for her post college. New market set for Redwood Valley Thanks to three self confessed “stay at home mums,” a new market will be hitting the Redwood Valley Hall on Saturday October 1. The market will be held on the first Saturday of each month and will sell a range of homemade products created specifically by Redwood Valley residents. Organiser Jacqui Pestell says there is an abundance of natural resources in the region and
that makes it particularly easy to make creative products, including homemade cleaning products, natural soy candles, and Lisa Lamb’s locally famous pineapple chutney and bird feeders. “In Redwood Valley there’s actually a lot of stay at home, arty crafty people,” says Jacqui. The Redwood Valley Public Hall was built in 1887 and served as the Redwood’s Valley School.

Waimea College student gets locks chopped for cancer Duncan Gordon didn’t care what his hair looked like after he had it all shaved off for cancer. He was doing it for a good cause, and his feat has inspired others to also join in. “In a way that’s why you’re doing it, because it’s making a difference to your life,” says Duncan. The 16 year-old Waimea College student says he was inspired to shave his hair off and raise money for The Luekemia and Blood Foundation because of the lack of support from the government, and also because cancer has affected him a lot closer to home. “I’ve had a lot of friends who have had cancer, my mother, my grandmother, aunties, and I just decided that I need to make a difference.” Duncan was hoping that if he could stand up and do it, then everybody else should. “The Lukemia and Blood Foundation don’t actually get support from the government and this will go straight to the people affected by it.” And Duncan wasn’t the only person to shave his hair for cancer, his barber for the day Mathew Watson also followed suit. The fundraiser was six months in the process, which was definitely plenty of time for Duncan’s blonde locks to grow. Business update Get a lush, healthy and beautiful lawn with scarification If you are a lawn enthusiast then scarifying (de-thatching) your lawn should be given top priority in your spring lawn maintenance. Dethatching is essential to maintain a lush, healthy lawn. Thatch is the layer of built-up plant material between the green top growth and the roots of grass plants. Thatch develops naturally as lawn grasses grow and slough off roots, shoots and leaves. Some thatch helps protect the roots, but excessive thatch prevents moisture, oxygen and nutrients from penetrating the soil. One problem with a thick layer of thatch is that newly sown seed will root in the thatch layer -- not the soil. Thatch doesn’t provide the same insulation as soil, so the roots of such plants dry out quickly, and the lawn dies. A heavily thatched lawn dries out faster so you have to water more frequently. To determine whether your lawn has too much thatch, remove a plug of lawn, and measure the layer of thatch between the top growth and the root zone. If
it measures more than 1/2” in depth, you should dethatch the lawn. You may need to perform this chore only once every two to three years. There are several tools that can be used to remove the thatch layer, but contrary to popular belief, a metal spring rake isn’t one of them. The tines can’t penetrate the foliage to reach the surface of the soil. This type of rake is good for removing fallen leaves, but not thatch. To remove thatch from a small lawn, use a scarifier, which will slice into the lawn and bring up vast amounts of dead material. Nelson Bays Chainsaws and Mowers sell scarifiers, but they acknowledge that with a rrp of $1295, this may be a costly outlay for a machine you will only use a few times a year. For that reason they have a scarifier available for hire at affordable rates, with options for half or full day hires. Dancing off to Aussie An eight-strong group of young ballroom and latin dancers are off to Australia in December, ready to tackle the best of both sides of the Tasman at Australian Championship. Leah Tinetti, 17, and Jared Neame, 18, are Dancealott’s best hope for a top three finish, after two fourth places in as many years for Leah, says dance teacher June Alexander. “It’s a new partnership, and there are many new partnerships in here, but of course we will go over there to win it. I’d put them in the top six in the South Island definitely,” she says. “Everyone is going to get a placing.” The dancers practice in five-hour sessions and their experience varies. Footballer shooting for London Olympics Phillip Rollo Richmond’s Jordan Swaney is in the frame for Olympic Games selection, following a recent trial with the New Zealand Oly-Whites squad. The 20 year-old former Waimea College student was selected for the Taupo trial after impressing for Mosgiel AFC in the Southern Premier League, where one of his coaches was also hoping to gain selection, but in the coaching panel. The former New Zealand secondary school football wingback says representing his country at the Olympic Games is something he’s always aspired to. “I’ve always aimed for it, especially when I knew I was too old for the New Zealand Under-20 side,” says Jordan. “It would be awesome, it would mean everything. I’ve always aspired to be the best footballer I can.” Jordan, who spent the past two seasons playing a bit part for Canterbury United’s ASB Premiership squad, has also announced he will be spending the summer playing national league football for Waitakere United. He is the second Nelson player to sign with the New Zealand champions after Gagame Feni also confirmed a spot in the squad
for the coming season. Waitakere coach Neil Emblem was one of the selectors at the New Zealand Under-23 camp and liked what he saw from the Richmond boy, and offered him a spot in the West Auckland side. “I had been meaning to call him for a trial up there and after the camp I finally did. But we got talking and he said he’d sign me.” Jordan says competition for a starting spot will be tough at Waitakere, but he knows if he can cement a spot in the eleven then it will help him in his quest to become a professional footballer. “It’s good though. There’s a lot of work to do, but it’d be great for the Under-23’s if I can cement a spot. There’s not a lot of left-sided players in the squad but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything either.” Able to play in defence or attack, Jordan says he still fancies himself as a left wing back. “I like to get forward, it’s something I’ve always enjoyed doing. But at left fullback you get the ball a lot more.” With the coaching staff yet to be confirmed, Jordan is unaware of when an extended squad will be announced, with overseas players also coming in to contention.

The weather is warming up and for many this means shedding the cocoon of winter coats just to realise the affect that winter has had. Junior Club days will be held once a week on either a Friday or Saturday, depending on which is more suitable for those involved, and run by the new Junior Convenor James Brown. There will also be a family group coaching day once per month where parents can learn together with their children. Adult coaching is available and there are the options of both social leagues, for those looking for a fun and rewarding way to enjoy tennis, as well as competitive leagues, for those who are more serious and would like the chance to test their skills. Garin College football finally kicking on Garin College could potentially feature the only secondary Nelson-based school student in the Canterbury United ASB Youth Premiership, and judging by the emergence of its junior boys team, there might be a few more pushing for higher honours down the track too. Garin College first XI captain Erik Panzer was this week named in the Canterbury United Under-19 squad for its national league campaign - the only Nelson-based player for the 2011/12 season. His selection comes just one week following the conclusion of the Garin College junior boys 14th grade campaign, a side he coaches and saw promoted from the second division at the beginning of their debut year to emerge from the 14th grade first division with a top four finish, reaching the finals. The all year nine team started off with a core group of kids that wanted to play football together. But only six games in to the Robbies Bar & Bistro mixed 13th/14th grade season the team had amassed 40 plus goals and only conceded a handful, which saw them rightly promoted in to the Robbies Bar & Bistro 14th grade, once the first round had ended. Erik says the new grade brought a lot of challenges though as they came up against more structured and quality football. “But to their credit, they matched their opponents and we very impressive in most games,” he says. The side finished in sixth place at the end of the round, with the team heading in to the playoffs.

But this was when they really hit their straps and proved their immense potential, winning a quarter final 4-3 against Richmond Trojan Conquerors and being the only bottom half team to progress to the semi final. The semi final against FC Nelson Mavericks was an entertaining game with many
chances to either team, with Garin leading 2-1 at half time, they were unable to hold on and lost disappointingly 4-2. “The season overall has been a huge achievement. Every lunch time I would see them down on the field playing a game amongst themselves, which shows how much they enjoy it.”
Erik says having two football teams for the first time is clearly a step in the right direction to build depth never seen before at the secondary school. “I feel it is just the start of something successful with potential for Garin Football if the team is able to stay together and build up through their high school years.”

Track meet to honour local Olympian Nelson’s premier track and field competition has been remodelled and named after late Olympian Harold Nelson. Harold was New Zealand’s longest living Olympian, before passing on July 1. The long distance runner had a glittering career that was highlighted by a gold medal at the 1950 British Empire Games in the 6 mile. He finished second in the 3 mile at the same games and was New Zealand team captain and flag bearer at the 1948 Olympic Games. The Harold Nelson Classic will take place at Saxton Oval, in front of a near completed brand new pavilion, on November 26 and is already attracting numerous entries from out of town as a result of the closure to QEII Stadium in Christchurch. The Harold Nelson Classic replaces the Hester Shield Classic on the Athletics Nelson calendar. Tapawera students meet sports heroes Nathan Fa’avae, one of the world’s top adventure racers, visited Tapawera Area School in his role as a NZ SPARC Sports Ambassador. Just the night before he got off the plane from competing in the 6-day adventure event named the Wulong Mountain Quest in China. Nathan enjoys coming to rural schools such as Tapawera and Murchison, which he visited in the morning. “The students are quite mature. This could be due to their lifestyle as they appreciate giving up their time to do sports,” he says. Shanine Hermsen as the Re-
gional Sports Director to Secondary Schools for Sport in Tasman brought Nathan primarily to speak to these rural schools. Along for the learning experience was Katrina Grant, from the New Zealand Silver Ferns team, who will be an ambassador next year. The aim of the sports ambassador programme is to inspire young athletes to participate and excel in sport throughout their school life and into adulthood. Competitors will again compete for individual accolades only, this year. “This meet has huge potential,” says Athletics Nelson head-coach Greg Lautenslager. “One of the reasons I wanted a meet that we could open up to anyone is that we could get better competition.” Greg believes Harold would be proud to have the competition named after him. “His family was very touched, I think he’d be very, very happy and pleased, and somewhere up there he will be at the meet with his stopwatch in his hand.” Harold shot the starting gun for the ceremonial opening lap at the Saxton Oval athletics track. Saxton Oval will also host the South Island Secondary School Athletics Championship on March 31, 2012.

Public Notice of Right to Demand a Poll on Electoral System
Closure of Roads to Ordinary Vehicular Traffic – Sunday Creek Road
On 11 August 2011, the Tasman District Council decided to retain the First Past the Post (FPP) electoral system for the 2013 and 2016 local government triennial elections. This is the system that the Council has used in past elections for Council and community boards. Notice is given under section 28 (1) of the Local Electoral Act 2001, that electors of the Tasman District Council have the right to demand a poll on the electoral system to be used at the next two triennial general elections (2013 and 2016) of the Tasman District Council. The choice is between the First Past the Post (FPP) and the Single Transferable Vote (STV) electoral systems. Unless a poll determines otherwise, the FPP electoral system will continue to be used for the Tasman District Council. A valid demand for a poll must be: • made in writing; • signed by at least 5 percent of eligible electors of the Tasman District Council. This will require 1,690 elector signatures; • delivered to the office of the Tasman District Council, 189 Queen Street, Richmond, 7020 by Tuesday 28 February 2012. Every elector who signs a demand must also set out in it his or her full name and the address for which he or she is qualified as an elector of the Tasman District Council. Civil Defence in Nelson Tasman
HAVE YOUR SAY! The past 12 months have been huge for Civil Defence. Not just major earthquakes in Canterbury but also large regional floods in Murchison, Golden Bay and Tapawera.
Planning for Civil Defence in Nelson Tasman is being reviewed and this is the chance for the public to have a say about how Civil Defence is organised in our community. The Nelson Tasman Civil Defence Emergency Management Group has released its draft regional Plan for consultation. The Plan sets out how Civil Defence is organised in our region and describes how the region prepares for, responds to and recovers from emergency events. Copies of the draft plan can be viewed at www.tasman.govt.nz/link/draftcdplan or at any Council office and library in Tasman District or Nelson City. This year there are eight categories to choose from, including Environmental Leadership, Schools, Community Groups, Business, Rural, Sustainable Design, Best Use of Renewable Energy and Heritage. Entries are welcome until Friday 23 September 2011, with the awards to be presented on 17 November 2011 at the Theatre Royal (itself a previous award-winner). You can download nomination forms and criteria from the Tasman District Council website, www.tasman.govt.nz (search on ‘environment awards 2011’) or collect them from any Council offices or libraries. Start thinking about who has been doing great work and deserves a nomination – plus, of course, it is fine to nominate yourself or your group. Please return forms by Friday 23 September 2011.

Teams prepare for wine competition The Italian and American contenders for the Nelson Wineart First XV wine competition have now arrived in Nelson, ready for the showdown with local wines, that happens on September 25. A total of 360 bottles were flown into Nelson recently - 180 from Italy and 180 from America, and are now being held at Woollaston Estate in preparation for the judging, the Degustation Dinner held straight after the judging, followed by the Tutored Tasting the day after. The First XV Competition features 15 chosen wines (the First XV) across three varieties (Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris and Riesling) from each of the three countries New Zealand, Italy and USA, with NZ being represented by select Nelson wines. The top wine from each variety and an overall winner will be chosen. Nelson First XV chair Patrick Stowe of Rimu Grove Winery says
now that the international wines have arrived and are in the cellar, the excitement is starting to build. “We are immensely proud of our Nelson wines and when you see our bottles lined up beside those from Italy and the United States, it’s becoming very real. I can’t wait for the judging and I’m confident our wines will surprise and delight the judges.” An independent panel of renowned international wine judges will conduct a blind tasting of the 45 wines in a closed session. Patrick says tickets to the Degustation Dinner at Woollaston Estate and the Tutored Tasting at the WoW Museum the following day are selling well and they are hoping to entice overseas visitors who are interested in wine as well as rugby to come along.
