Richmond rodeo wows big crowd It’s an event unlike any other on the local event calendar and it didn’t disappoint, with dozens of cowboys making the journey to Richmond Park only for most of them to make another quick trip to the arena’s dirt floor. Hundreds attended the rodeo says organiser Tina Angus Phyn, making it a massive day. “We were absolutely thrilled with the gate takings and we need that to pay the bills, we’re rapt.” She says the crowd really got into the event, especially when the action heated up and the support from competitors was just as strong. “The cowboys have come back to us saying ‘this is awesome, this is the best rodeo, thank you guys’. The feedback has been great.” In the competition Patrick McCarthy won the rope and tie, and he teamed up with Kate Haugh to win the team roping comp. Ross Dowling won the bareback, Wade Marshall won the saddle bronc and Henrietta Purvis won the barrel race and Jimmy Booth won the bull ride. For more photos visit www.shuttersport.co.nz.
‘It’s all positive’ for retail It might be across the car park but Richmond Mall manager Belinda de Clercq “can’t wait” for The Warehouse. The foot traffic count for the Richmond Mall was a record high 606,000 during the month of December, a staggering 60,000 more customers than the same time last year when the Upper Queen development hadn’t opened. Record year for fire brigade
Richmond’s volunteer fire brigade recorded its busiest year ever in 2013, attending 281 call outs compared to 240 the year before. NEWS Fishing contest’s big haul in brief Phillip Rollo Reporter
MOTUEKA HARBOUR DIESEL SPILL: Officials are relying on natural forces to disperse yesterday’s minor diesel spill into the Motueka harbour and estuary. The approximately 100 litres of diesel originating from Port Motueka entered the immediate port area and through tidal flows into the Motueka estuary. As diesel is a very light oil it will have covered a very large area. The thickness of diesel on water is 0.0102mm and as it is much lighter than water and will not sink although some particles may be held as small droplets in the water column. BROODS TO RELEASE EP: Nelson sister/ brother duo Broods have confirmed the release date of their six song EP set for January 30. Broods’ debut single Bridges is currently at number eight on the New Zealand Top 40 Singles Charts and number eight on the ARIA Charts in Australia. Rowan Young’s kingfish that tipped the scales at 14.84kg was the biggest fish caught over the three days, but it was an 8.68kg snapper that got the organisers of the weekend’s Motueka RSA Fishing Contest talking. “He was very close to cracking the $2000 which is for 9.06kg,” says organiser Bruce Reid of Brian Fensom’s snapper. “The snapper this year were right up with the best of them.” Each year the Motueka RSA fishing club puts on the three day competition which is followed by a weigh in and a get together by the competitors. There are prizes in each of the adult and junior categories, but the biggest carrot of $2000 isn’t always a guarantee. It is given to the heaviest snapper over 9kg, and unfortunately for Brian, his effort was agonizingly close. Even second place, Kerry Little, was just one kilogram short of the cash prize. There were around 240 people entered into the competition, which is sponsored by McCashin’s Brewery and Waimea Weekly. The competition begins on Friday night and entrants are able to fish anywhere in the country as long as their catch is caught from a fishing rod. Because Friday was a blustery day, most chose to fish on the calmer Saturday or

Most competitors fished in the Tasman Bay, the more daring headed into deeper waters in the search of bigger fish. “I think most of the bigger fish came from the D’Urville Island, Stephen’s Island area,” says Bruce. While he declared “it wasn’t that big” when getting his photo taken, Grant Stevens’ 12.12kg groper took out that section and was the second heaviest fish caught on the three days. Rodney Giles caught the heaviest blue cod, which weighed in at 2.16kg, Alan
Bradley’s 1.14kg gurnard was the heaviest in that section and Jason Inch had the heaviest kahawhai at 3.06kg. But when it came to counting crays, the results were few and far between. Ethan Peek’s 3.98kg effort taking out the crayfish category. In the junior section, Kody Cotton had the heaviest snapper, Tanisha Smith caught the heaviest herring, Tanuha Smith caught the heaviest spotty, Jacob Ching the heaviest gurnard and Madison Sharkie had the heaviest kahawhai. Money raised from the competition goes towards the Motueka RSA’s fishing club.

Locals support whale effort Dozens of Nelsonians have driven over to Golden Bay to help refloat scores of beached whales. On Monday the Department of Conservation attempted to refloat 47 pilot whales which were stranded on Farewell Spit. DOC rangers and volunteers from Project Jonah have already spent the better part of two weeks refloating whales, with more than 70 either dying or being put down due to their poor condition. DOC’s John Mason says the project to refloat the whales has been frustrating but a positive was that there has been so much
Woman, 71, drowns at Rabbit Island A body discovered floating in the water at Rabbit Island was the first drowning in Nelson since 2011. Adelheid Wilma Stock, 71, of Nelson, drowned while swimming at Rabbit Island. Emergency services were alerted to the incident at about 5pm when she had been pulled unconscious by a member of the public. Police say she had been swimming with a friend at the time, although it is believed she was found alone, according to St John. “At first look this would be a presumed drowning but no one can say whether she’s had some sort of medical event while being in the water,” says shift manager Kris Gagliardi. “What we gather is she was swimming with a friend at the time but she wasn’t with the friend when she was found.” Kris praised the member of the public that pulled the woman out of the water and performed CPR until a “multitude” of off-duty health care professionals took over, including a nurse, practitioner and paramedic who all happened to be on the beach at the time. Police, Ambulance, Volunteer Fire Fighters and the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter responded shortly after, and although there was a “lengthy” resuscitation, the woman died at the scene. It is unknown how long the woman had been in the water for until she was discovered. “We think she had been seen by her friend around 20 minutes prior but that was just an estimation, the exact time is unknown.” The matter has been referred to the Coroner.
support. “Whale strandings do need a lot of people and there’s no way that DOC could do that sort of work with the staff we’ve got. We really do rely on Project Jonah and the volunteers, most of whom have come from Nelson.” More than 100 volunteers were at the beach on Sunday to help refloat whales and John says despite the mixed results, the mood is positive. “There’s always a good feeling at a whale stranding, everyone is feeling positive and they’re there because they want to be there,” he says.

Top paragliders take flight It was a birthday present from his wife that started Nick Taber’s obsession with paragliding. He says she’s regretted ever since. “She never sees me”. Nick, who will compete at the New Zealand National Paragliding Championship in Nelson this weekend, recalls words like “purity” when describing the feeling of gliding through the sky harnessed below a parachute. “Unlike parachuting where you get an immediate adrenalin hit and you’re done, what excited me about this was the purity of the flying with no engine, no noise, you’re just gliding like a bird,” the 48 year old says. “Man’s dreamt of flying since the year dot and this is the closest you get to be a bird. We’re so privileged to live in a time where we can do this.” Nick’s first flight, the lesson for his birthday, occurred on a spring day eight years ago. Just two months later he had passed his license with 40 flights under strict supervision under his belt and hasn’t looked back. He even calculates the time he’s spent in the air to be close to 600 hours. “The terrain you travel over is just amazing. I feel like a rock climber that is cheating because we don’t have to do the hard

work to get to the top of the mountain, we just fly over them and we get to see lots of them. I live for those days when I get to see the snowy peaks.” Some of Nick’s longest flights have latest between six and seven hours at a time, and the most significant of those were three milestone 100km journeys from Inward’s Lookout near Wakefield all the way to Hanmer Springs. Nick says his second effort was more special because he had fallen short of the township in the previous trip despite still making the 100km mark. He became just the second pilot in New Zealand to crack 300km in one season last year. “When I did finally crack it I was going over the ski field and Hanmer Springs came into sight and I just couldn’t get enough height. I was thinking ‘come on, come on’, I could see it but I couldn’t get to it. It was so tantalizingly close, but then I just got enough height and I literally just got over the mountain, landing by the river bed,” he says. “It had been my goal for seven
years to fly to Hanmer and it was an amazing feeling.” This week his attention will turn to the New Zealand National Paragliding Championship. The national competition format is like “orienteering in the sky”, according to Nick. Each pilot carries a sophisticated GPS with them and has to hit certain points in the sky. “Our GPS will tell us our distance, our bearing, as we enter the cylinder it will beep to tell us we’ve hit it. It comes with huge challenges because we’re not guaranteed the wind will play ball with us. Sometimes only five per cent of the field will reach their goal but it’s done with speed, the fastest pilot to get their goals in the fastest time.” Around 60-70 pilots will take part in the competition, with a bulk of those coming from overseas, including an 11-strong contingent from Venezuela. Flying will commence on Saturday and goes until February 1. The courses are situated in most areas of the region including Nelson, Stoke, Richmond, Wakefield and even Takaka, St Arnaud, Murchison, and Havelock too. Nelson Control Tower have allowed the pilots to fly at 3500ft during the competition.

Sanctuary fence could start in May Construction of a $4.7 million pest-proof fence around the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary could begin as early as May this year. General manager of the trust behind the fence, Hudson Dodd, says an application for the remaining $1.5 million needed is being considered and he is “fairly confident” of a positive result. “If that doesn’t work out I have a whole list of plan B’s,” he says. “Either way the fence will start in 2014.” Tenders have been accepted for the build and include Brightwater’s Taylor Contracting for the earthworks and pest-proof fence specialists Xcluder of Rotorua, for

Good feed for a good cause When George Paki Paki started using stainless steel bins lined with soil and manuka chips to recreate the hangi experience he knew he was onto a winner. The fragrance, taste, texture – everything was the same. Except of course, the hours spent digging holes, chopping wood and heating up stones. The Wanderers Rugby Club life member is putting on a hangi this Saturday to help fundraise for Ranui House in Christchurch and he’s encouraging members of the public to come down for a good feed for a good cause. Able to cater for around 150 people, the hangi will be held at the Wanderers Clubrooms in Brightwater. There is a long list of meats, including wild pork, mutton, ham, chicken and venison, while Mark O’Connor has donated fresh vegetables for the dinner. The club bar will also be open for people to purchase drinks.
People are welcome to arrive from 5pm, or earlier if they wish to watch the club cricket fixture between Wanderers and Waimea Toi Toi United. The actual dinner will be commencing at 6pm. The price is $10 per person with all of the funds going towards Ranui House – an accommodation block where caregivers of sick patients can stay for free while their loved ones recover at Christchurch Hospital. The fundraising efforts initially began with man Peter Hanna. The tomato farmer stayed at Ranui House while his wife Lynda underwent treatment for leukaemia at Christchurch Hospital. Ranui House needs to be earthquake strengthened and last year he held a charity concert as the first fundraiser, which is obviously being followed by the hangi. To buy tickets for the hangi fundraiser, phone Peter and Lynda on 544 0304.

Tapawera art goes on show on tramping trips. “Every year I try do the hut or birds that I see. But there are people that do sheep, horses and rural subjects.” All of the work has been created over the past year and has not been exhibited before. Graham Sturgess, a former engineer who is now on the pension, has gone out of his comfort to design a coffee table. “I’ve really gone out on a limb with it to make it a bit different so who knows what will come next,” he says, before Steve chimes in. “Well we’re waiting in anticipation.” Entry to the VAST exhibition is free. It is open 10am until 4pm on each day except for Saturday February 1 when the exhibition runs until 8pm.
“The friendliness and team spirit” is what makes Tapawera artists unique, says Steve Parry. “We live in a 400 strong village so we tend to be friendly.” Hundreds of artwork including sculptures, tapestry, wool works, painting and quilting will go on display when Visual Art Society Tapawera hosts its annual exhibition at the Shedwood Hall from January 25 to February 3. The aptly named VAST covers a wide range of members including retirees, farmers and high school students, and because they all live in a rural area, some tend to focus on rural topics. “They do to a point,” says Margaret Budgen who channels her inspiration from views seen

More than 100 people emailed through to enter to win tickets for the popular event which is this year being headlined by the Kiwi favourites The Exponents and Stan Walker. Wednesday January 8 Art Group Nelson’s summer exhibition held at Queen’s Gardens two weekends ago was an “absolute success” according to group member Jean Jackson. The group decided to extend the hours of the exhibition and only hold it over one day and were very pleased to have sold many works and take in more funds than last summers event.

Licence for boaties? I agree. Too many cowboys out there. Brenda Kenny.
I read your story and I totally agree. To me it’s no different to driving a car, the person driving is responsible for people’s on board safety. I drive for Red Cross and the vehicle does not move till all are belted in. But I would like to see the law go one step further anybody on a boat should wear a life jacket, if they are caught not wearing one the person in charge of the boat gets a hefty fine or have his boat confiscated just like they do with the fisheries if more than the quota of fish is taken. I see on TV were people either they under estimate the weather, run out of fuel or in the bush fall down a mountain, then the people who rescue them have to leave their paid job to go find them. Definitely room for improvement good article, keep ‘em coming. George Barker. The licencing of boaties is another of these issues where a small minority of reckless participants bring about rules, regulations and costs which most of us don’t need. Boating and sea fishing are among the freedoms and pleasures which can still be enjoyed in NZ without intrusion from the nanny state (except of course for fish size and bag limits). The advocates seem to think that licencing
will spell the end of irresponsible behaviour: not likely, without a lot of expensive policing. Note that in Australia (NSW, at least) owning a dinghy or jet ski requires not only a licence but a full-day course, the total cost for my son and partner who live there being about $1300 (covers five-year licence). In addition, licences are required for sea fishing. If you want to take turns at driving the boat, such as when water skiing, all drivers will need a licence. So boating is for those with spare cash only. Do we need that in NZ and can we do it any cheaper? I don’t think so, when you consider the bureaucracy and gendarmerie involved. Graham Venning.
Your article on ‘Boaties should be licenced’. I have been a boatie nearly all my life. I am now 86 years old and have finally retired from boating. The question of licencing crops up every now and then. Motor cars and their drivers are licenced, but this does not stop the idiots crashing and killing people. I spent some time in N.S.W. where they have licencing, and I have never seen such bad boatie behaviour in my life. Ditto Queensland. I started in small boats and worked my way up into relatively large cruising yachts. I obtained various qualifications available, am a past commodore of Mana Cruising Club and have crossed Cook Strait probably a hundred times. Now boating is an

adventurous sport, hobby, pastime, and all the regulations in the world will not eliminate all the hazards. Education is the key. Join a club, most of which have training programs running, and there are plenty of experienced people to teach you, or let you know if you if you are not boating safely. Life jackets are an example. My son in law who is a Master Mariner and a keen boatie, was amazed at the number of people here wearing life jackets, as compared with Australia. I believe licencing will achieve little. It will cost a lot, and take away some of the freedom of this great activity. Roger Youmans. Delivery couple ride vintage car to Lakes: Tony and Marie are our rural delivery trojans and unbeknownst to many people they often deliver within the various communities without charge - they deserve to be recognised for their valuable contribution to our rural communities. Where would we be without people like them? Sue Wilson. Tennis ball machine angers: This guy clearly doesn’t understand that he using stolen goods to construct this tennis ball machine. Those trollys
cost a supermarket quite a few hunderd dollars each, and Simon is happy to go in the paper and skite about it. It shouldn’t matter that he didn’t personally take it, that he just ‘found’ it, the trolly still belonged to someone. And now I have just read in the Waimea Weekly ‘your voice’ column that someone else else tried stealing a trolly to try and copy what he has done. Good one Simon! Anna Shone.

Classic cars help bring in money for hospice Crowds of people made the most of the bevy of classic cars on show at the Classic Car display on Sunday. The event, held by the Classic Motoring Society was a fundraiser for the Nelson Tasman Hospice and was attended by hundreds who had the opportunity to browse a selection of rare classic cars owned both locally and by those from further afield who made the trip to support the event. Society president Geoff Morris says the event was a success and raised more than $2700 for the worthy cause. “Around of 220 cars were on display. It was really great, everyone loved
the venue, their was a really good collection happening at the gate. People were saying here’s an extra ten bucks for my mum - the donations were just rolling in.” He says a highlight of the event was the attendance of Wakefield local John Herd who brought along his Model A that has been done up in wood. “It really was fantastic to have him there. It was really neat to see.” John’s Model A is a bit of a DIY project and has been completely made over with a wooden cab, complimented by a wooden kayak and wooden tear-
drop caravan that was in tow. He says he got his inspiration from playing around with the Model A and was a keen woodwork hobbyist. “The Model A is oak. I decided on wood because I enjoy working with it and it is easy to work with. The kayak took me 300 hours, the caravan took around a year to complete.” He says despite its special appearance the Model A was still very practical and he tries to use the truck to get from A to B as much as possible. And of course he admits it turns a few heads. “People are quite intrigued by it.”

reduce your spending in order to address your debt. Sorted.org.nz has an excellent ‘money-planner’ tool to help you work this out. Sort your bills into an order of priority. Bills for essential things like rent and power should be paid first; high interest debts are the next priority; low interest or interest free debts such as those you might have with family are less of a priority. Ask for help from family or friends. Look for ways to increase your income. Sell assets to free up some cash. Call your creditors and make repayment arrangements. Creditors are much more likely to be flexible if you talk to them instead of just stopping payments. If you do not have enough money to go around all your creditors, talk to a Budget Advisor. They may be able to help you come up with a solution.

Joan’s 8ft cactus flowers Fishing
Richmond grandmother Joan Neighbours was amazed when her eight foot tall cactus sprouted flowers, only for them to fall off in a matter of days. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
Joan Neighbours’ cactus is special to her, and it’s not just because it’s well over two meters tall. Her grandson, Leo Lipp-Neighbours, who has been missing for four years this month helped her plant it in 2008. Last week it did something the Richmond grandmother didn’t expect -more than 20 flowers the size of her head sprouted out, but fell off one by one in a matter of days. “My grandson, the one that is missing, he planted it,” she says, interupting herself to answer the phone. “Sorry about that. So yeah there must have been about 25 all together. There was about eight on one and 17 on the other.” Joan was so excited when it flowered that she called Waimea Weekly. “I thought if you want to you can, but they’re just so impressive. They only flower for two or three days at the most. Those other ones will be out today but then they’ll be finished by tomorrow.” She admits she’s a bit frustrated such beautiful flowers fall off so quickly. “They’re so nice for a start and then they’re gone. I went away for Christmas to my granddaughters graduation, she got her masters in biology, and I missed most of the flowers. But I’m getting the benefit of them now.” Joan is unaware what type of cactus, why it has grown so tall and why the flowers fall off so soon.

Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club Tasman Bay still appears to be the hotspot in the top of the south for snapper. The word is you need to be up and about very early in the morning, berley up, get your lines down past the sharks and hopefully into the snapper. Lots of 3035cm fish are being caught in front of Rabbit Island in about 8-10m of water. Long lining seems to be the most predominant way for catching most of the big snapper out in the middle of Tasman Bay, with Barracuda and squid being the best baits. Large rig are also in the Bay and good catches in set nets have been reported. Kahawai are also in abundance with good schools being seen from the main wharf. They have been easy to spot with the birds working flat out above them. Try soft bait or lure from the any spot along the wharf or points on rocks road and you might be pleasantly surprised with the result. Kenepuru is still quite slow and a lot of patience is required to land fish. Although it did produce the winning snapper for Brian Fensom of the DBFC in the Motueka RSA competition held on the weekend. Brian’s fish was just 0.5kg shy of landing him the $2000 prize for a fish over 9.07 kgs or 20lb. Not to be out done wife Andrea managed to
secure 4th place. The Boulder Bank is still going off! Large numbers of kingfish are now smashing lures around, so if you ever wanted to land one of these awesome fish, get in your boat and get out there. The spat farm is also fishing well, with stickbaits luring out the fish, and then jigging doing the damage. We have also heard of a few groper caught in the outer sounds up to 10kgs but the mafia will put a contract out on our heads if we disclose exactly where. Some nice crayfish have been taken over in the Abel Tasman recently with some Dawnbreaker divers leading the way. Once again we have been sworn to secrecy but suffice to say some cays up to 8lb nave been taken. Hopefully the wind will start to die down a bit more and looking ahead at the long range forecast for the weekend it looks to be a cracker. The website that we use is www. metvuw.com which gives up to 7 days of forecast of the south island with predicted rain and wind. Used in conjunction with www.swellmap.com which provides wind direction, swell heights and tides of many points around the top of the south. Between them they provide a great way to pick the best fishing days.

Check out this beast of a truck This week I'd like to introduce the three members of my senior leadership team for Nelson Bays Police. They are all highly experienced Police Officers who are responsible for specific areas of our policing operation across Nelson Bays. Senior Sergeant John Price John is our response manager and has oversight of all 60 of our response staff based as far a field as Takaka, Motueka, Murchison and Wakefield, along with Richmond and Nelson. When you ring police it is most likely that one of John's staff will attend. Response staff also do their share of prevention work such as foot patrols and road policing and also strive to provide a high quality service to victims. John has been a police officer for 38 years and has been based in Nelson Bays for 28 of those years. He says the biggest advance he has seen in that time was the advent of the Wanganui Computer, enabling police, the Ministry of Transport and the justice sector to share information. Prior to that something as simple as querying a vehicle's registration took more than a day. As of last year police officers can do tasks such as vehicle queries and much more instantly on their iPhone or iPad. Detective Senior Sergeant Wayne McCoy Wayne is our investigations manager, responsible for all criminal investigations ranging from homicides to fraud and everything in between. He leads a team of 25 staff which includes a Child Protection Team, Adult Sexual Assault Team, Crime Squad, Forensic Investigators and a Tactical Unit. Tactical covers high volume crime such as lower level dishonesty, theft and drug offending. Wayne joined the police in 1976 and came to Nelson Bays in 1994 from Timaru. During his time in the south he was deployed to the Aromoana massacre as a member of the Armed Offender's Squad. Wayne has had a long career as a rugby player and coach and is also a crack bridge player. Senior Sergeant Dave Gibson Dave Gibson is the prevention manager and is based at Nelson. He has 26 years policing experience, working in a variety of roles in the Gisborne area (including Wairoa and Ruatoria) and in Nelson. Dave manages the Youth Services, Community, Family Violence, Alcohol Harm Reduction, Highway Patrol and Strategic Traffic sections. He is predominantly responsible for ensuring police are in the right place at the right time to be able to prevent crime and crashes from occurring, ultimately preventing people from becoming victims.
It’s not your normal run-about but MS Ford’s Matt Dowell says if you’re after the ultimate boys toy, then he has the truck for you. The 6.2L V8 F150 Raptor is described by sales manager Matt as “the ultimate boy’s toy” and it is a beast. Built for extreme off roading, the truck’s sheer size speaks for itself. It is so big it’s got cab steps to help both driver and passengers climb into it and produces 411hp and 434lb.-ft. With heated and air-conditioned front seats, six-speed SelectShift automatic with overdrive and tow/haul mode Matt reckons you couldn’t ask for much more from a truck. Priced at $140,000, Matt insists it won’t be at the yard long, as someone won’t be able to resist the opportunity to snap it up. As for the miles per gallon, who Matt Dowell, sales manager for MS Ford, dwarfed by the 6.2L V8 F150 Raptor they’ve got cares? And the top speed? Who at the yard. Photo: Sinead Ogilvie. knows.

People needed to give advice Nelson’s one-stop advice shop is after more volunteers to help people with problems from travel directions to holiday pay entitlement to relationship problems. Citizens Advice Bureau helps people who need some advice and its spokesperson Heather Thomas says it’s a rewarding role. Volunteers often say they love their work because every shift is different, and they’re always learning new things. One moment they’re finding the contact for the local scrabble or motorcycle club, then the next enquiry might be about holiday pay entitlement, or a relationship issue.” CAB is running a training course for
new volunteers at the end of February and they are after new people to come along and see if it’s a role that interests them. The programme includes communication skills, an overview of common laws, and how to research using various computerised databases and manuals. Heather says volunteers are often relieved to discover they’re not expected to know everything. Some lesser known CAB services include reading and explaining complicated documents, helping draft letters to clearly summarise issues, and assisting to fill in forms. SUP, the new ‘it sport’ Rachel Pike on her stand-up paddle board. Photo: Phillip Rollo. Daniel Carter keeps Tweeting about stand-up paddleboarding, but the All Black first five isn’t the only one to fall in love with “the world’s fastest growing water sport”. Whether or not Nelson’s lack of sufficient surf has played a part, stand-up paddleboarding, or supping as it is apparently also known as, has sharply risen in popularity here. Kitesurf Nelson has sold 50 stand-up paddleboards this summer alone, and its popularity sparked a fortnight race usually held at Tahunanui Beach on Saturday mornings. The main difference between a surf board and a SUP is the sheer volume – oh and the paddle. A stand-up paddleboard is wider and longer, allowing the user to stand up on it easier. You can travel more distance and it’s physical easier than lying down using your arms. There are different models, better suited to either racing or surfing. Rachel Pike, one of the fastest women to SUP from Tahunanui Beach around Haulashore Island and back, has taken to the new water sport
on both a social and competitive level. “I’m a surf lifeguard, pool lifeguard and spend a lot of time around the water so I gave it a go and just really enjoyed it,” she says. “For me you can go out for an hour and you’ve had fun but also a good hour of exercise.” Kitesurf Nelson started renting and selling stand-up paddleboards four years ago, but it has only taken off in the past year, says Shane Anderson. “I think it’s just the ease of use in water. I’m not sure why, because to be quite honest it was quite slow to take off in Nelson, where in other parts of the country it has been really busy,” he says. On a fine summer day it’s not often that you’d drive past Rocks Rd without seeing at least one stand-up paddleboarder out in the ocean. “The beauty about Nelson is the water is so accessible. The conditions are usually glassy, flat, calm.” To join in the fortnightly races through a buoyed course near in Fifeshire Rock and Haulashore Island, enquire at Kitesurf Nelson.

The rise of Wanderers Daniel Cooper feels it’s time Wanderers started to deliver. It has been seven years since the cricket club won any silverware, but having reached the Twenty20 final last season and being beaten in the recent two-day competition final, the signs are certainly there that things are on the up in Brightwater. “I definitely think so,” the captain says. “Andy Leonard has come on board in the last couple of seasons and sort of manage us and he’s been a huge part of that.” Speaking ahead of this weekend’s “Battle of the Bridge” against rivals Waimea Toi Toi United, Daniel has faith that his bowling attack and selection of power hitters at the top of the order can do the job against the team that beat them in the two-day final. “Throughout the season we’ve had a really strong bowling attack. We’ve still got that but throughout the season we’ve improved in the

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz batting. We’ve got Peter Carey who has come up from Christchurch and he’s a huge assest,” Daniel says of the former New Zealand under-19 player. Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers head into the game on form. They beat ACOB twice during the week, once in the Twenty20 competition at Greenmeadows on Thursday night and then again comfortably in a one dayer at the Botanics on Saturday. Tim Field and Hayden Ingham were handed Nelson debuts on the weekend, which will also bouy the club. Four Wanderers players took the field in that game, with Daniel joined by Joe O’Connor who has featured for Cental Districts A in the past. “It’s been a long
time coming for him [Hayden]. I think he probably deserved a spot a lot earlier. The results we’ve been getting have been from some really good individual performances from throughout the season and they’ve been recognised.” On the back of a double century for Nelson two weeks ago, which was followed up by a half century in the rep fixture, Daniel himself was also pleased with his own form. “I’m feeling in really good form. I think coming off six months in England has really helped me and I’ve been able to continue my form from there.” Wanderers will take on Waimea College in the Car Company Twenty20 competition before facing Bar 321 WTTU. “It’s the local derby, the Battle of the Bridge,” he says of the rivarly between WTTU and Wanderers. “It will be a good one and I’m sure the boys will be getting up for it.”

Mot readies for Crusade Phillip Rollo Reporter
editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz
He says it with a lot of passion but the mission appears simple for George Sturgeon: “We’re turning a little wee old bare ground with one grandstand into a stadium.” George, the chairman of Good Sports Motueka was leading a team of 30 volunteers on Sunday who have been tasked with getting Sports Park Motueka up to standard to host the Crusaders and the Highlanders for a pre-season Super Rugby game on February 7 at 5:30pm. A few weeks ago the rugby ground looked better than your average club field but certainly nothing like AMI Stadium in Christchurch. Looking ahead, it will be the become the brief home battlefield for international rugby stars like Richie McCaw, Kieran Read, Sam Whitelock, Israel Dagg and Motueka’s own Owen Franks, with an expected 10,000 rugby fans to be walking through the gates ahead of the biggest game to be played in the town since the Crusaders last made the trip in 2010. “This is going to take us three Sundays of five hours and that’s just getting this grandstand up. The rest will take an extra day or two,” explains the man whose dream is to see the Crusaders play a regular season game in Motueka before he dies. “She’ll be huge, we just need to sell more tickets.” Nelson Bays outbid Marlborough to score the summer clash and George, a former Nelson Bays coach, says the hosting rights are huge for

With two wins from two games things are certainly looking pretty sweet for the Nelson Marlborough Falcons. But with the upcoming fixture against Team Wellington the start of what assistant coach Mark Johnston has likened to “six point games”, the next three rounds will give the Falcons a chance to prove their playoff credentials. With no semi finals, just one of the six teams in the Southern Conference will qualify for the ASB Youth League final, a win against top of the table Team Wellington at home is vital. “I think you can see the top four teams already sorting themselves out already so these games against the likes of Team Wellington, Canterbury United and Youngheart Manawatu will be the crucial ones,” the New Zealand King Salm-
on Nelson Marlborough Falcons assistant says. “These are crucial. I guess you could call them six point games.” Mark, who moved into a coaching role alongside Davor Tavich, says the team is “right on track” having defeated Southern United 2-0 in Dunedin and Heartland Wairarapa 3-2 in Blenheim. Midfielder Taine Sweete was red carded shortly after scoring against the league new boys and will be suspended for Sunday’s match against Team Wellington. But other than that, wholesale changes are unlikely to be made elsewhere on the park with the team scoring goals and impressing in the first two rounds. The Falcons take on Team Wellington at Trafalgar Park this Sunday from 2pm.

Notice of Intention to Stop Unformed Legal Road
Tasman Skatepark Tour 2014
Unformed Legal Road Between Clover Road West and The Wairoa River. At the request of the adjacent landowner, the Council is seeking to apply to stop unformed (and un-named) legal road situated near Clover Road West. A portion of the road to be stopped is recently claimed accretion to the legal road. Accretion is when a gradual build up of land occurs due to the changing nature of a river (or other waterway). The other portion of the road proposed to be stopped is unformed road which used to run alongside the river channel. The river channel has shifted, and the unformed road, and accretion to road, is now situated some distance from the physical river. The proposal to stop the road is part of a complex exchange intended to provide continuous public access alongside where the river is now located. If the road is stopped, the land will be sold to the adjacent landowner, who will create esplanade strips in return, thus making provision for public access and the protection of riparian values. The overall proposal also includes an exchange of marginal strip land administered under the Conservation Act 1987 by the Department of Conservation. For plans of the portions of the road intended to be stopped, and plans of the overall proposal, and to make any other further enquiries, please contact Robert Cant at Tasman District Council – Email robert.cant@tasman.govt.nz, Ph. 03 543 8585. Plans may also be viewed at the Richmond Office of the Tasman District Council. Objections on the proposed road stopping should be made in writing, to the address below, and must be received no later than 4.00 pm on Wednesday 19 February 2014.
