Tug o’ Peace pulled into town The Tug of Peace’s first visit to Richmond started with some disappointment but ended in hilarity as the crowd of onlookers made the most of their crack at the reigning champions. Around seven teams were unable to make it to the event that was held on a Saturday afternoon for the first time, not that Nelmac were complaining, the defending champions basically only had to turn up to be crowned champions for the third straight year.

Richmond Athletic had a shot at the title but were dispatched within four seconds at the fundraising event for Hospice. So Nelmac cuised into a tie with the Carter Holt Harvey contract team for the most wins overall, but their day was about to get tougher. Given the opportunity to have a go at the big boys a mercenary group of 10 women from the crowd as well as wives and partners of the Nelmac crew stepped up to the plate. The women

quickly dispatched a group of five of the biggest opponents to a cacophony of laughter and a few red faces in the men’s team, finally it took a sixth male just to even the game. Organiser Phil Wright says the format will likely change again next year to make sure there is a good deal of competition, whether it returns to a lunchtime occasion on a weekday or piggybacks a larger event it will definitely be back again next year.
