When Debra Clements and Tiffaney Williams first saw plans for the Queen St upgrade they were seriously concerned that their event-hire business, Got It Covered, wouldn’t be able to continue

operating. Got It Covered and the neighbouring Salvation Army Shop were going to lose their access to Queen St when stage one of the $11million upgrade commenced and, without any rear access to their businesses, faced the prospect of man-handling all their deliveries in and out of their

shops. But thanks to the generosity of another neighbour, Lawrie Wilson from Richmond Auto Court, it’s been business as usual with Lawrie freeing up a section of his car yard to allow vehicles to access to his two neighbouring businesses. “Our truck is in and out of here 20 or 30 times a week, so we abso-

lutely needed to get access,” Debra says. “We have 400 chairs, tables and wine barrels and hundreds of table cloths that go in and out, as well as customer picks-ups, so we wouldn’t have been able to run our business without Lawrie’s generosity.” Tiffaney says Lawrie’s offer was also timely because February is

Got It Covered’s busiest month for weddings and they were desperate for a solution. “We didn’t have any answers and we said to the council ‘we had to have access’,” Tiffaney says. “Then Lawrie offered to clear some of his car yard to let our truck and

NELSON WINE & FOOD FESTIVAL: From left, Jared Ratto, Patrick Scott, Rachel Foulsham and Rosie Moreton enjoy some local wine at the Nelson Wine & Food Festival on Sunday. This year the iconic annual festival took on a new name but remained the same celebration of music, wine, food, and summer at the Middle-Earth Vineyard in Brightwater. Despite forecasted rain, locals were treated to a humid day, dancing under a scorching sun to music from the Neal Brothers, Paul Madsen, Cruise Control Band and The Dixie Prix. “I enjoy it and it keeps me fit. It de-stresses you as well and you see all the sights from a bike.”

“I’m self employed so I don’t ride heaps, but today I’m biking to school with my daughter.”

“I’ve been riding from Nelson to work in Richmond for years. The cycleways and trails here are so good so it’s a nice way to get to work.”

“I ride to work at the hospital when the weather’s good. It’s relaxing and I love being outdoors.”

Queen St businesses help neighbours FROM PAGE 1 vehicles through - he’s a really nice guy.” Salvation Army Shop manager Paula Taplin says they have trucks coming in twice a week as well as customers dropping off donations, so continued street access was critical. “We are extremely grateful to him,” Paula says. “I don’t know what we would have done without it.” Lawrie says he was happy to help out his neighbours after discussing their concerns with contractor Hawkins’ community relations manager Chris Forman. Although the initial suggestion was to provide access only to delivery trucks, Lawrie says he’s also happy to let

pacted by the first stage of the upgrade. “The upgrade is a big deal and everyone has to help out,” Hayden says. Although work on stage one of the upgrade was effectively delayed for a week after contractors found the old water pipe “wasn’t where it was supposed to be”, council engineering services manager Richard Kirby says it will still be completed on schedule. Richard says the old pipe was “one metre out and so we had to move new water pipe across and shunt a few of the other services across as well”. The first stage of the redevelopment from Gladstone Rd to Noel Leeming is due for completion in mid-May.

A local man was left shocked after his truck was kicked and he was abused for taking photos in a marine reserve. Jason Elvines, owner of DNA Boats in Brightwater, took his latest boat out for a test run on Thursday afternoon, along with the man who commissioned it. The plan was to give it a sea trial and take some photos of it, using Jason’s drone camera. They left from the Nelson boat ramp and powered around to the marine reserve between The Glen and Cable Bay, says Jason. “We saw a kayaker fishing on the edge of the reserve and he waved out to us as we passed. We waved back and once we were in the reserve I started showing the owner all of the bits and pieces, and then I took out my drone and started taking photos.” He says they could hear the kayaker yelling but thought he’d just caught a big fish and was excited. Once they’d got back to Nelson, Jason was reversing his truck on the boat ramp when a man flagged him down. “He comes up to my window and says ‘man, have you seen

Hospital’s $25M extension Brittany Spencer Reporter

reporter@nelsonlive.co.nz

An ageing population and more orthopaedic surgeries, like hip and knee replacements, are behind the $25 million expansion of Manuka Street Hospital, which began last month. The redevelopment will see the hospital eventually grow to 22 private rooms, with the number of surgery theatres to increase from three to four. Fifty percent of the surgeries at Manuka St are injuries covered by ACC, with other growth areas including cosmetic surgery and various elective surgeries. The hospital sees around 2500 patients a year. Manuka Street Hospital general manager Margaret Gibbs says the expansion has been in the pipeline since 2015.

“We were running short of beds and we also know that, with an ageing population and more and more dependence on orthopaedics, we were going to need another theatre.” The development has been spilt into two stages, the first costing between $5-6 million and due to be completed by October this year. The second stage isn’t due to start until the Nelson Tasman Hospice has relocated to a new purpose-built site in Stoke in 2019. The first stage centres around redeveloping the ward block and will include a new reception, patient and family lounge, consultation room, an ambulance bay, general store, public toilet block and, most importantly, eight new bedrooms plus four intermediate care beds. “We expecting to be opening our doors with a brandnew ward in October, 2017. We’re

we will go up to 22.” The second, and much larger, stage of the hospital expansion is expected to cost between $15-20 million and will involve demolishing one of the hospitals existing three theatres and building two larger ones. The day stay area will also be re-

designed and moved to the front of the hospital, while the central sterile supply will be increased and the theatre sterilisation unit and commercial kitchen will both be expanded. An inwards goods store, offices, and more consultation rooms will also be added. The hospital has yet to place a timeline on the second stage, “that is just too much crystal ball gazing,” says Margaret. Margaret says the cost to the project is quite significant. “It’s been quite a process to get to here and there is a lot going on, but it’s such an exciting project to be a part of.” The new development was designed by Warren & Mahoney Architects and will be built by Gibbons Construction. The hospital is jointly owned by Southern Cross Hospitals Ltd and the Manuka Street Charitable Trust.

Port's wine bottle building Port Nelson officially opened its brand new 13,000m2 storage facility yesterday, which will be used to house one of our most popular exports – wine. The Patterson Logistics Centre is the first major building project of a $32 million redevelopment plan. The centre will be the Nelson logistics hub of QuayConnect, the port’s Nelson-Marlborough integrated warehousing, transport, and logistics service which was established a year ago.

Transport Minister Simon Bridges officially opened the building, which is named after the late Nick Patterson who was on the board of Port Nelson for 20 years, serving as its chairman for 13 of those. Port Nelson CEO Martin Byrne says, over its first year, QuayConnect’s primary focus has been on the wine industry. “We manage 80 per cent of the South Island’s wine exports and 90 per cent of the inbound dry goods.”

Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

Simon Bloomberg A group of civil contractors took time out from their busy day jobs last week to complete what they considered to be a high priority community project at the popular Silvan Forest Mountainbike Park near Richmond. Nelson Marlborough Civil Contractors NZ chairman Malcolm Edridge of Edridge Contracting and branch members Andrew Spittal of Ching Contracting and Gary Donaldson of Donaldson Civil, with help from Fulton Hogan and Downer, were on site last Friday to oversee the sealing of the access road to Silvan Forest. The contractors offered to seal the road because the new mountainbike park is proving so popular that increased traffic is creating a dust nuisance for neighbouring property owners. Although all three contractors are busy with big projects around the Nelson-Tasman region, they are also keen mountainbikers and, along with land owner Rick Griffin, members of the Mountainbike Trails Trust that established Silvan Forest Mountainbike Park. So all four were happy to leave their day jobs and be on site on Friday to make sure the community project went smoothly. “We are getting 1200 riders using the park each week and over 600 cars using the access road so it’s creating a bit of dust,” Andrew says. “We put up a 20kmh speed limit sign to slow the cars down and try and reduce the dust but it’s not working so we decided to seal the road as a community project for NelsonMarlborough Contractors.” Andrew says Edridge Contracting supplied the machinery while Downer provided the gravel and Fulton Hogan did the sealing. Ching Contracting and Donaldson Civil also helped out along with the Tasman District Council. Rick says he is amazed at the popularity of the park which only opened in 2015 and now has about 30km of trails. The park’s network is about to be extended again with the construction of the first of three new downhill tracks scheduled to start “in a week’s time”. “When we first talked about the idea of a mountainbike park and then made the first trails, I didn’t ever think it would become this popular,” Rick says. “There’re so many people using it now and lots of young kids, which is really pleasing - we have a philosophy of making 90 per cent of the trails rideable for 90 per cent of the riders and that’s working very well.” Gary says the park’s popularity is due to its close proximity to Richmond and excellent network of rideable trails. Ideally, Gary wants to see the neighbouring council-owned Kingsland Forest developed as a mountainbike park so that it could be linked into Silvan Forest. Commuters go by bike Simon Bloomberg Police left their cop cars in the yard and commuters left their cars in the garage, and they all got on their bikes and cruised into Sundial Square for a free bagel and coffee as part of Go By Bike Day. About 50 cyclists, some regular bike commuters and others just out to celebrate last Wednesday’s Go By Bike Day, enjoyed a free breakfast and bike check courtesy of the Tasman District Council. There were also giveaways and a chance to test ride a demonstration E bike supplied by Village Cycles. Two of the less frequent cyclists at Go By Bike Day were Richmond police officers Charlotte Donaldson and Jamein Bristowe who were giving the official police bike a spin. The bike is equipped with a siren and flashing lights and is designed mainly for community police work, although Charlotte concedes “we are so busy we don’t usually get enough time to ride it”. “Grant Heney has one at the Motueka station and he uses it quite a bit but we don’t use our much,” Charlotte says. “We usually need to

get around a lot quicker so we use the cars.” Regular cycle commuter Jennie McGuiness, who rides from Nelson to her job at MWH in Richmond three times a week, says she enjoys keeping fit and the “experience of riding along our cycleways”. Council community partnership coordinator Mike Tasman-Jones, who doubled as breakfast cook on Go By Bike day, says it was an opportunity for cyclists to enjoy a free breakfast and socialise with like-minded people before heading to work. Mike says council always supports Go By Bike Day because it encourages people to get on their bikes and make the most of the district’s cycleways. Council is also walking, or at least riding, the talk when it comes to cycling, because last week it was leading its category in the Aotearoa Cycling Challenge. The challenge encourages organisations to get their staff to ride a bike for at least 10 minutes in February and TDC was leading the 200 to 499 staff category with 79 riders, or 30 per cent of its staff, getting on their bikes.

Students love new playground

M A SP O R T ROV E R PRESIDENT RAIDER15/38 150 ST

Wakefield School students are finally able to enjoy the new playground space that their ideas went into designing. Planning began around two years ago, starting with a conversation amongst teachers, students and principal, Peter Verstappen, about where learning happens. “We’re gifted with this brilliant environment here at Wakefield School so we just thought, let’s enhance it and create some more spaces where play and learning can happen in a more creative way,” says Peter. The new play area includes paved pathways, a boardwalk, tyre swing, tiger turf and new shade sails, and was officially opened with a ceremony last Friday. Money for the project came from the school’s annual gala, as well as the Rata Foundation, pub charity and the Ministry of Education Capital Works Programme, al-

though members of the community also donated a lot of materials and labour to see the project completed. “Because Wakefield School is so much the heart of Wakefield, its constantly used by everybody in the community for sports, picnics, kicking back, and we’ve got the community pool as well, so when we were building this we kept in mind the needs of people other than just the children of the school,” says Peter. With this project now done and dusted, Wakefield School is looking ahead to its next challenge, an obstacle course. “Schools are a work in progress so I’ll never say [the obstacle course] is the last, but I’ll certainly say it’s the next area,” says Peter. “And when we say obstacle course, we certainly have in mind something that’s a little bit more creative than just something you buy off the shelf, so it’s going to be an obstacle course very much in the Wakefield way.”

SWAP MEET: Dave Vanstone with some of the old road signs he had for sale at the Nelson Vintage Car Club swap meet on Saturday at the Nelson Speedway grounds. Dave says the signs were previously owned by the late Dennis King who used to work with the AA and were purchased at his estate auction. The swap meet had a wide variety of other treasures for sale, too. The annual event is the club’s major fundraiser, assisting with the day-to-day running of the group, as well as helping to finish off the group’s club room at the Nelson Speedway grounds. ‘Bus to Wakefield’, Wednesday, February 8: Those pushing for an express bus service to Wakefield are off to a good start. As well as leaving the petition in the Wakefield Four Square, Chateau Rhurbarbe, HQ Café in Brightwater and the Nelson and Richmond public libraries, they have also received some great feedback after making their way around Richmond last Friday, with many aware of the petition and most willing to sign it. The petition closes on February 28 so if you want a say, make sure you get to one of the locations mentioned and sign your name.

Massive turnout for motor show, Wednesday, February 15: Thanks to the support from those involved in this year’s Nelson Motor Show, including participants and members of the public, organisers say they will be able to donate $2401.40 in proceeds to Nelson West Rotary. The annual event is a non-profit one and once costs have been met, the proceeds of the show go to the Rotary club who use it to do good in the community. The popular competition to win a ride in the General Lee also found a winner in Robyn Peters. Robyn was also treated to a dinner at Speights Ale House.

Tourism growing: For a long time New Zealand has been trying to encourage more tourists to visit us and the benefits of this effort are now paying off. In fact, the Chief Executive of Tourism NZ is now saying that if the present growth rates continue through till 2023, the present 3.5 million overseas visitors could well approach 7 million. This is a problem many countries would love to have. Let’s hope the airport terminal upgrade growth assumptions don’t undershoot as 2023 is not that far away. Ray Wilson.

Right to Privacy: I am brassed off with the interference of my privacy with unsolicited phone calls from hearing aid merchants, land agents and the like. They just take it for granted that they have the right to intrude in my life whenever they want to. I do not think so. I do not want my dinner disturbed by their inane greedy phone calls. Then when I put the phone down there is a knock on the door by proselyting morons. If I need something I will get it and I do not need or want these greedy intrusions into my freedoms and privacy. I am curious to find out how oth-

Great news, way to go, could do with a lot more of them around. Janice Bedford. Cctv and good lighting are the best deterrent. Carol-Anne Armitage. One down, a thousand more to get. Anthony Graham. Fruit industry ready for good season: How ‘bout telling the supermarkets to stop ripping everyone off, we all know they buy the fruit for next to nothing, and rip off the growers, who do a harder job than they do. Bloody cheek. Roger Doran. Good, now there is no excuse for them to be $6 a kilo. Beth Downer.

Blame the supermarkets for the $6 a kilo. Go to the fruit stalls outside local orchards and you will find them a lot cheaper than that. A LOT cheaper. Louise Raymond. I stopped at fruit stalls between Marahau and Motueka and paid 50c to $1 less than in the supermarket. Still felt ripped off. Peter Paul Fierek. Plenty of talent at skatepark tour Alex Moreu, 9, impresses the judges and the crowd during the 2017 Tasman Skate Park tour on Saturday at the Richmond Skatepark. Photo: Jessie Johnston. Jessie Johnston The 2017 Tasman Skatepark tour came to an end on Sunday, having showcased the regions talented skateboarders, scooter riders and BMXers over the last few weeks. Amongst the enthusiastic competitors was the Moreu family including dad Mike and sons Alex, Sam and Tom. “We’ve been skating for about two years now. Sam got into skating first, we were at a friend’s house and they had penny boards and we were all kind of smitten with them. Sam got one for his birthday soon after and that was it, we were hooked,” says Mike. This is the family’s third year competing in the skatepark tour, although it’s the first time that Mike has entered into it himself, promising the boys he’d give it a go. “Tom is a really good freestyle skater, Sam’s really good at street skating and kind of surf-inspired skating and then Alex is like Tony Hawke junior, so his thing is big airs, he’s kind of the daredevil of all three,” says Mike. “It’s really cool we have something that we all enjoy doing together, my wife Gaila skates, too.” Nikita Turu took out the junior scooter title with Alex claiming the junior skate thanks to some big air and a Superman. “It’s just a really fun sport, it’s a nice way to get around and instead of going on the computer all day it’s nice to get outside and have fun,” says Alex. “It’s cool because there’s a whole group of skateboarders and we can all skate together, I think more people should do it.” Ryan McHugh, Reggie McDonald and Tom Banett claimed the senior scooter, skate and BMX categories respectively. Meanwhile, veterans Blake Eden, Ben Short and Ryan Dando turned up the heat, entertaining the crowd with technical and gravity-defying tricks to win them the open scooter, skate and BMX titles.

Giants repay support to fans Andrew Board Over the years, Joss Cumming has spent countless hours in the Trafalgar Centre screaming for her Giants – now the team are returning the favour and supporting her. Joss has been a regular at Mike Pero Nelson Giants’ home games for around 15 years, sitting behind the goal post, wearing a blue wig and known to give plenty of unsolicited advice to referees. After getting married in late 2015, her husband John started heading along as well, holding up a whiteboard with various slogans depending on the team the Giants were playing. Joss says she’s been a season ticket holder for years and loves supporting the team. “They’re so good. They’re our local team and you get to know them, too, over the years. They’re a good bunch of guys, they get around with the crowd.” But last May the Cummings had to put basketball to the side as John suffered a heart attack while at work. As he fell he cracked his head on the floor causing a brain bleed. Paramedics later said if it wasn’t for a co-worker doing CPR be-

Joss and John Cumming with Mike Pero Nelson Giant Ali Granger, centre, ahead of the NBL basketball season which starts next month. Photo: Andrew Board. fore they got there, he probably wouldn’t have survived. John says he doesn’t remember the incident. “All I know is that I was at work and I’d come back to the warehouse from some reason and, in

the process of picking up paperwork and trying to get something done, I had a minor heart attack, but I fell backwards onto the concrete floor and cracked open my head. The warehouse manager managed to keep me going until

the ambulance arrived about five minutes later.” While in Wellington Hospital, between intensive care and head injury unit, Joss was bedside relaying scores and updates from the Giants games to an uncon-

scious John. “It was one of the things we spoke about, how they were getting on, who scored the points,” says Joss. John suffered another set-back in December and now has to wear headgear to cover up a hole in his skull until a titanium plate will fill it. It’s been a tough few months for the family but with the Giants season rolling around again they were looking forward to a welcome distraction. And hearing of the tough year the Cummings endured, the Giants wanted to make sure cost wasn’t a barrier to them attending games, giving them season tickets for the 2017 season. Giant Ali Granger says it was the least they could do. “From the Giants, that’s what we try to be about. It’s not just about selling the most tickets. Giving season tickets to two people who are die-hard fans, that’s what makes the Giants special.” The Mike Pero Nelson Giants tip off the regular season on March 16 in Invercargill. The first home game is two days later on Saturday, March 18, and you can bet that sitting behind the hoop will be Joss and John, screaming as hard as they can.

Corvettes impress at Founders

Jessie Johnston Over 100 corvettes of all shapes and sizes made for an impressive assembly at Founders Heritage Park on Saturday. The display was part of the National Corvette Convention and featured cars from around the country, including Jim Frater and his 1979 Corvette and Craig Jaquiery and his 1968 C3 Corvette. Both are first time Corvette owners and it’s safe to say their vehicles are their pride and joy. Craig has only had his Corvette for five months after purchasing it from the previous owner in Golden Bay. “Because it’s

1968 it’s more exceptional than the rest of them, it’s the first year of manufacture for the C3s,” says Craig. “[I’ll own it] forever, I’m going to be a wrinkled old man and still driving it.” Jim, on the other hand, has been enjoying his car for the last six years after purchasing it from Indianapolis. “I’ve always wanted one, they’re an incredibly attractive car and if you look around today there are just some incredible cars here,” says Jim. Jim’s Corvette is definitely a step up from his previous set of wheels, “I had a 1939 E series Morris 8 which had eight horse

power and this has got about 300,” says Jim. The convention was organised by Top of the South Corvettes and was a great opportunity for those not so fortunate as to own their own, to admire Corvettes as old as 1958 to as late as last year. “I think you get a lot of satisfaction from seeing people admire your car. If I park on Trafalgar St I see people taking photos sometimes, I’ve been in Queenstown and had some people cross the road and block the traffic so they could take a picture of it. It’s pretty cool if it entertains somebody else and gives them a bit of pleasure,” says Jim.

My idea of a good morning is sleeping in and waking up slowly to warm sunshine streaming through my windows, not getting up at 5.30am to milk a mob of 200 cows. In fact, my body is so useless at getting up early that it didn’t even hear my alarm the first time it went off. Once I finally dragged myself out of bed, threw on some thermals, woolly socks and my townie gumboots I made my way down to the Raine Farm behind Saxton Field. The Raine Farm is the definition of a family farm, with eight generations of Saxtons and Raines farming the land for the last 173 years. They’ve even turned back the clock, distributing their fresh Oaklands Farm milk in oldfashioned glass bottles which are available through delivery or at the six chilled vending machines placed around the region. Their newest venture, a new premium milk brand called Aunt Jean’s Dairy, was launched in November. While I had never milked a cow before, this wasn’t my first brush with dairy farming. Some of my best childhood memories include jumping across silage, herding bulls, and

milking shed. In the video on nelsonlive.co.nz you’ll see exactly what I mean, they were stomping, shuffling and squaring me up to land a decent kick. After some more milking, it was time to round up more of the mob and coax them into the rotary milking shed. Amy’s instructions were to walk behind them and usher them in with a few "c’mons". She did it easy enough, but when it was my turn I was just a crazy lady talking to some disobedient cows. They were so wary of little old unfamiliar me that it took me three goes before a single cow meandered in the direction I wanted it to go. And as my luck would have it, Julian Raine, the owner of Raine Farms, chose that moment to turn up. After having a wee silent chuckle at my cow whispering efforts, Julian took me off duty for a quick lesson in how Aunt Jean’s Dairy and the Oaklands Farm milk is pasteurised and packaged. Overall, milking cows was probably one of the most fun Give it a Go Girls I’ve done. I learnt heaps, including the fact that watching a townie trying to get cows to cooperate will put a smile on just about anyone's dial.

Community Association The Brightwater Community Association held its first meeting for 2017 on February 13. Initially, we were pleasantly surprised at the number of attendees. It soon transpired, however, that many had attended under the impression that the proposed Lee Valley Dam was to be discussed. This is a district wide consideration and not one for our association. Someone had circulated a notice purporting to originate from the Brightwater Resident’s

Association stating that a discussion on the dam was on the agenda. This was a blatant attempt to hijack the meeting and was not appreciated. 40kph flashing signs are to be erected outside Brightwater School and will be in operation between 8:30am – 9:05am and from 2:55pm – 3:15pm. Discussions are being held with interested parties and if they progress satisfactorily a call will be made for residents to “adopt a pot” and to donate and maintain plants for the project. onstration is being held as part of a road safety campaign to show how long it takes for a car to stop when travelling at different speeds. For Brightwater, this demonstration will take place on Starveall Street between Lord Rutherford Road North and Laura Lane on April 5, between 9:10am and 11:40am. This section of Starveall Street will be closed to traffic during this period. Our next meeting will be held at the Brightwater School staffroom from 7.30pm on March 6.

Seniors Ticking the Boxes Have you thought seriously about the issues you might face in the future? Rather hard when you have not even thought of the questions that you might face. That is why the Nelson/Waimea

Anglican Church has devised a seminar series called Ticking the Boxes. Each third Wednesday of the month they will tackle different subjects. On March 15, they will explore ‘A balanced view on retirement living’, which will feature guest speaker Troy Churchon from the Commission of Financial Capability, (numbers are limited so you will need to book this one). On May 17, ‘legal facts - information on Power of Attorney, wills and legal considerations for seniors’ will be discussed and on June 21, they will examine ‘healthy eating’ with the aid of Age Concern. Six other sessions will also be available and advertised closer to the time. The sessions will start with a finger food lunch. To find out more contact the Brightwater/ Wakefield senior care

coordinator, Nicola Berthelsen on 021 277 8061.

Brightwater Bowling Club Brightwater residents have done the double in the open pairs at the Wakefield Bowling Club Championships, with Julie Hall skipper of the women’s winning team and Peter Sisterson skipping the men’s winner. Linda Sisterson has won the women’s Open Singles Club Championship, was in the Women’s Triples Club Championship winning team and also qualified for post section play in the Nelson Centre women’s triples. Congratulations also to Linda and Peter Sisterson and Steve Goodfellow who have been selected for the Nelson representative “development” teams to play Marlborough this month.

It’s not good for the team if one of you hits the wall and crashes - it takes too long to get back on track.” Marina says Team Waypoints has completed a number of “big missions” in training including a 50km mountain trek with little sleep over two nights. They have also upskilled in white water ca-

noeing and abseiling which will be key disciplines in GODZone. Navigation using a map and compass (no GPS are permitted) is also critical, especially at night when the land features can’t be seen, and Marina says for that reason they have spent a lot of time wandering around the Richmond Ranges in the dark. She says the team is fortunate to have Tim, who is the only one of their team to have raced in GODZone, as a navigator. A number of other Nelson teams and competitors have entered GODZone including Dan Busch from the defending champion team of Yealands Family Wines. Dan joins six-time winner Chris

Forne, Dan Moore and Simone Maier. “They are definitely the team to beat,” race director Warren Bates says. “Chris is the world’s best adventure racing navigator and relishes an expedition like GODZone where he can pit himself against the rest.” Nelson-based team Swordfox with Brent Edwards, Ash Whitehead, Stu Lynch and Georgia Whitla are another team with all the attributes to take a podium place,” Warren says. “They have heaps of experience, great navigation options – with three very talented orienteers on board – and a track record of achieving high placings at other

Nelson’s Brendon Crequer was so impressed with the GODZone Adventure race when competitors traversed through the Tasman district’s backcountry last year, he roped his partner Marina Buonocore into taking up the epic challenge which starts in Queenstown on Saturday. Brendon was one of the volunteers at a remote checkpoint up in the Red Hills in last year’s GODZone and he came down inspired to give the week-long team’s adventure race a shot. And the first person he recruited for his team was Marina who admits she was initially very apprehensive about agreeing to join Team Waypoints. “Brendon said to me ‘we can do this if we train hard’. I thought, oh my God, really, but I still said ‘yes’. “Then we talked to Glenn (Lilley) who lives down the road and he said ‘yes’ so all we needed was one more guy. I was talking to Rob Hambrook at Subway and said we were looking for one more guy and he suggested Tim (Bygate), so he became our fourth team member.” Once the team was assembled, the novice expedition racers started training and soon realised the magnitude of their commitment. Teams in GODZone will trek, kayak, mountainbike and raft around the clock over a 450km course that includes a daunting 10,000m of vertical climbing. “It’s such a big unknown,” Marina says. “In races like the Coast to Coast, you know where it’s going and what to expect and how to train, but this is a whole different ball game. “You don’t know if your feet are going to hold up after six or seven days of trekking through rivers or how you will be after six or

Nelson spinner Felix Murray appears to be on the fast track to domestic cricket success. Photo Shuttersport.

Felix on fast track to CD call-up Jacob Page Felix Murray has had a whirlwind last 10 days. The talented 18-year-old spinner made the Central Districts squad for the oneday domestic semi-final against Wellington; he’s preparing to play an integral part in Nelson’s first Hawke Cup challenge in five years, this weekend against holders Bay of Plenty; and he is shifting to Palmerston North to study accounting at Massey University. While Felix didn’t get a debut for the Stags, making the 13man squad for a semi-final clash is a sure sign it won’t be

Henry’s

far away. The call from the Stags came as a shock to the New Zealand Under-19 respresentative, who had been solely focused on the must-win Hawke Cup elimination match against Canterbury Country, which he helped Nelson win. “I didn’t think I was in the running for that call,” Felix says. “Usually for must-win games, the squads are pretty settled. “Just the chance to get around the guys and see how they approached the game at that level and how they trained, it was a real eye-opener.” Felix has also had veteran Stags’ spinner Marty Kain

to work alongside during the Hawke Cup campaign and the duo formed a vital partnership in the quest for wickets against Canterbury Country. “Marty has the experience, but the [Saxton Oval] pitch is pretty flat and doesn’t take a lot of turn, so you have to be patient.” Felix says he has been trying to counter the batsmenfriendly conditions by trying to adjust his speeds. “If there’s not much turn, then, by changing my speeds, I’m hoping I can be a wickettaker by beating [the batsmen] in flight.” Felix was just 13 the last time

k c i p

Nelson challenged for the Hawke Cup. He says he knows how important the opportunity was and stressed the team would have to be patient. “[Bay of Plenty] are a good team and I’d expect they will look to bat first and put a lot of pressure on us and try to turn it into a run-fest, because they only need a draw. “We just need to believe in ourselves and stick at it and the opportunities to win will come.” The three-day Hawke Cup match in the Bay of Plenty begins on Friday. Nelson haven’t held the Hawke Cup since the 1997/98 season.

While most stages suit sprinters only the third stage features a serious climb, the summit finish at Jebel Hafeet. As with the last two years, the climb will likely determine the overall winner. The tour goes from February 23 to 26.

You can keep your food bill in check if you avoid replacing like for like (eg. bread and cheese) and make some changes to the foods you eat. Consider the following budget conscious ideas:

 Following the ‘healthy heart food guide’ will help keep you and your wallet healthy.  Eat most: vegetables and fruit  Eat some: grains, starchy vege, fish, meat, legumes, eggs, dairy alternatives and fats/nuts  Focus on foods that are naturally gluten and dairy free: vegetables, fruit, plain meat, fish, eggs, rice, potato/kumara, soy and corn  Instead of gluten free bread consider: rice wafers; corn/ buckwheat crackers or oat cakes/crackers (if not coeliac)  Have eggs, fruit or vegetables or porridge (if not coeliac) for breakfast instead of toast  Use your favourite sandwich ingredients mixed with lentils, chickpeas or rice for lunch  Base your dinners around vegetables, starch/grain and a little protein  Use avocado, oil or margarine in place of butter  Wheat free grain alternatives: rice buckwheat, oats (if not coeliac), polenta, quinoa & millet  If you need something sweet, try making bliss balls or magic bean cake- recipes online Keep your mind set on what you can eat, not what you can’t. The local contingent will be led by Alicia McLauchlan, who is currently leading the club points. Morgan Frost is starting to get back on the pace after having a stop-start season. Jayden Corkill is new to the grade this year but past racing experience has seen him pick up a few feature wins already, Darkie Armstrong has a new car while Dylan StoneCuthbert has been ultraconsistent.

The challenge will come from Ruapuna’s Jeremy Webb, who has not been seen in Nelson as often this season. Kyle Glover has had plenty of laps on the Nelson track this year and the Cantabarian will be gunning for a podium spot. Greymouth’s Thompson brothers, James and Rodney, will be the pick of the Coasters. They know how to use the track to their advantage.

It is an opportunity for all drivers to set themselves up for a tilt at the national title at the same track next season. The Tasman Thunder stock car team will be in Gisborne at the New Zealand Team’s Championship. The Super Stocks head south to Christchurch to contest their South Island title. Nelson’s Shane Harwood is hoping to defend the championship he won last year.

The annual Dawnbreakers Fishing Club’s Snapper Cup competition saw plenty of happy anglers on Sunday. More than 80 people took part in the oneday fishing competition with snapper, kawahai, kingfish and crayfish all amongst the bounty of fish caught. Dan Fisher says the 87 entries were extremely pleasing. “We had some really good entries, some good weights with the fish and plenty of different types caught.” Biggest snapper went to Mark Cotton at 8.03kg. Junior winner was Hayden Rutherford with a snapper weighing in at 4.96kg. Andy Selwood’s kingfish was 13.90kg. He also took out heaviest crayfish and kawahai.

Football in the Nelson Bays region has enjoyed an unparalleled amount of growth and exposure in recent times and this looks set to continue when the 2017 season gets under way in April. With the Tasman United men’s and women’s teams having their first year’s in existence, the pathway for young footballers has never been easier or more apparent. Nelson Bays Football general manager, Clive Beaumont commented that the season promises to be an exciting one. “This season will be a good one and I think the Tasman United men’s team has lit a spark over the summer. Last year saw a rise in numbers playing youth football which bodes well for the pathway Tasman players now have. “This year we want to introduce a youth framework for players 13 and up to try to keep them in the game,” Clive says. “There’s always a drop off in any sport between 13 and 16 and what we are trying to do is introduce something that keeps players in the game whether it’s competitive football, futsal or social football.” The new Tasman United Academy setup which

Saturday dawned fine and calm as the crew of the vessel Relentless steamed out into Cook Strait. Passing over the first marks at spot X, the sounder lit up and several pup groper were soon coming over the side. The next several drifts produced some of the best Cook Strait sailfish action you could hope for and the crew were soon crying out for a break. Steaming north to spot Y, the signs were even thicker and the crew soon perked back up. As soon as baits hit the seabed, all rods loaded up and several crew were pinned to the rail, struggling to gain any ground on big groper. With plenty of great eating fish in the bin, the crew steamed east for home, via a quick dive at Hori Bay to grab a few crayfish. Jason Elvine’s personalbest groper from Cook Strait.
