New business milking it Sinead Ogilvie Reporter
reporter@nelsonweekly.co.nz You’ll find Andrew and Julia Young up at 5am bringing in the cows for milking, but unlike your usual dairy farmer, they’ll be bringing in just 20 cows instead of the usual 500, the perfect number to keep their small dairy farm thriving. It’s been just two months since their boutique business venture opened to the public and already they are selling upwards of 800 litres of untreated, unpasteurised, completely natural milk per week to local families who are cottoning on to the idea of living a little bit more organically. Julia and Andrew are the first franchisees for Village Milk, a Takakabased business offering real milk, sold fresh at the farm gate. The milk is dispensed via an automatic vending machine into old fashioned litre glass bottles, a niche idea that is taking people by surprise and keeping them coming back for more. As well as the full creamy taste of the milk, Andrew says it is also the hint of nostalgia people get from getting their milk the old fashioned way that is proving popular. “The business is growing all the time, word of mouth is getting around and we are getting really good feedback about both the milk itself and the whole experience.” Andrew says customers find the vending machine something of a novelty and thinks the reason SEE PAGE 2 wheelchairs mobility scooters walkers/canes electric bed/hoists lift assist chairs bathroom solutions incontinence products daily living aids/products

Richmond will have free WiFi in its CBD within a month, adding to its reputation as a top shopping centre, says Richmond Unlimited. Richmond Unlimited, the promotions group of the town, says it has struck a deal to have free WiFi installed throughout Richmond’s central business district, allowing locals and tourists to hook into the network for free on their smart phones, tablets or laptops. The initiative is hoped to encourage more tourists into the town and give businesses an opportunity to advertise to those using the network. Setup costs will be paid for by Richmond Unlimited but it is hoped it will be self-sufficient within six months. There will be a one hour limit per user, per day. In an unrelated announcement last Friday, Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says free WiFi will be installed in Nelson’s CBD “by Christmas” and labelled it a “natural and desirable progression for the city’s economic growth”. Richmond Unlimited committee member Steve Page says the group is “very, very pleased” to be a SEE PAGE 2

“I think free wireless internet is a wonderful idea but I wouldn’t use it because I’ve got it at home. But it’s good for people who travel.”
“I wouldn’t have to use it but I think it’s a good thing for businesses.”
“[It’s] not a bad idea. It helps the community out and helps the older folks out. If I was in the CBD I’d use it.”
“I just think it’s great to help out the small businesses. I personally might not use it but my son would and I will when I get a modern phone.”

behind its success is that more people are becoming conscious of what they feed themselves and their families. “I think people are definitely becoming more aware of what they are putting into their mouths. A big part of what we do is focussing on milk quality. It comes fresh daily
from the cows, is chilled and then goes straight to our customers.” People travel from as far as Nelson, Wakefield and Richmond for Village Milk and first time customers can find the Youngs at 88 Holdaway Rd in Lower Moutere. The cost per litre of milk is $2.50 and you can either purchase a glass bottle to keep for $4 or bring your own way of taking the milk home.

Free CBD WiFi FROM PAGE 1 part of the move to bring it to Richmond. “It’s great to see Richmond Unlimited getting into quite positive steps to help build the business community. I think it’s a quick catch up to what the rest of the world is doing and we need to show that we are as good as any market leader in the world. With Kmart coming, the Warehouse coming, free parking and now free WiFi, it’s certainly making us one of the more progressive shopping centres in the South Island.” The area where the free WiFi will be available will be Queen St and all of the major car parks. Businesses will be able to buy “drop downs” that will advertise quick messages, like a sale or coffee deals, says Steve. TDC councillor Judene Edgar says “it’s great that Richmond Unlimited has picked up this initiative themselves”.

Aaron and Kirsteen Guy opened Rob Roy’s on Queen St and now consider Richmond as their home. Having lived above the Rob Roy’s in Christchurch, which “fell down” during the earthquake, the couple decided to move north having heard of some shop vacancies by a rep. “We were left with no other options but to look around really,” says Aaron. “It was a change of lifestyle and it was time for a new step for us. We definitely consider it to be home now.”

Nelson lists near the top of regions other New Zealanders have been moving to over the past five years, and that’s having a positive impact on its economy with many of those setting up new businesses. In a worldwide survey conducted by Gallup, New Zealanders are the most transient people in the world, with a quarter of the population having moved to a different part of the country in the past five years, the New Zealand Herald reported last week. The top destination was Auckland, followed by Otago and then Nelson. The survey coincided with the 2011 Christchurch earthquake, which may account for the high figures and two South Island regions featuring in the list’s top three. CEO of the Nelson Regional Economic Development Agency, Bill Findlater, says the amount of people making the move to Nelson from other centres was a positive reflection on the region. “Nelson is a great place to live and work, it’s beautiful, we have great weather, a good climate and really good infrastructure. It’s great to see so many people choosing to move here. A lot of the people who come are successful in their fields of business, adding to the livelihood of the region and helping to revitalise the economy. “ Dianne Lineham and Saeed Awad, owners of Taste of Egypt, moved to Richmond following the second earthquake. The couple’s home was damaged in the first quake and their rental was then put on the market following the second one, sparking a move back to Dianne’s home-

SALISBURY SCHOOL TO STAY OPEN: Salisbury School has confirmed it will remain open after minister of education Hekia Parata made the shock announcement in Richmond yesterday. More than one year ago the school faced closure as the Ministry of Education favoured an intensive wraparound service for students. Salisbury board of trustees chairwoman Helen McDonnell says she wanted to thank the community for its support over the past 18 months.
AQUA FITNESS RECORD: The ASB Aquatic and Fitness Centre is aiming to have record numbers for its mass aqua fitness class on Thursday morning. Entry is by a $5 donation with all proceeds going towards the Nelson Cancer Society. The class begins at 9:15am and will run for approximately 45 minutes. Bringing your own aqua belt is encouraged and a moderate fitness level is recommended. NETWORK TASMAN CHAIR STEPS DOWN: Long serving chairman of Network Tasman Ltd, Ian Kearney, has announced his intention to step down at the end of his current term as a director. Ian has chaired the board of the local electricity distribution network since its formation in 1993.

A group of local volunteers are hard at work fixing damage from the flood that swept through Richmond and left a trail of destruction in local waterways. Keep Richmond Beautiful, a voluntary organisation that works closely with the Tasman District Council on community projects, has taken it upon themselves to clear Reservoir Creek of debris left behind after floodwater caused it to rise nearly two metres above its usual height. Vice chairman Ron Argue says clearing the creek of silt, vegetation, grass and branches left behind after the water level came down is vital to the survival of plants on the creek bed. “A lot of debris has been brought down with the floodwater and the whole area looks forlorn. It’s important to clear the vegetation and other material off of the bed to stop the plant life from dying.” The group who focus mainly on beautifying local parks, reserves, estu-

aries and creeks around Richmond, spent more than 1000 hours last year fixing damage to areas such as Jimmy Lee Creek and Lodestone Creek caused by the 2011 floods and Ron says he is pleased the areas affected this time round were in different locations. Gwen Brooks, committee member for Keep Richmond Beautiful, says the group meet once a month to decide which projects to focus on and frequently undertake planting, making tracks and paths, building seats, picnic tables and taking on other community work alongside other groups. “There’s a great sense of community spirit in the work that we do. I think it is so important for people to want their community to be tidy.” Keep Richmond Beautiful is looking for new members, anyone interested can contact them via the TDC.

Locals given second notice to pay up Villagers support court case The Waimea Village Residents Committee was re-elected with only one change at its AGM on Sunday and its first point of order was to confirm it will push on with action against the owners of the village in the high court. Chairman Jerry Rowland says the, at times heated, meeting didn’t do much to resolve the growing animosity between the residents and the owners of the village but the residents did overwhelmingly support court action against Michael and Carolyn Wright. The case was first heard last week where the judge has asked for more information and for an attempt to resolve some of the issues between the lawyers of the two parties. Michael said at Sunday’s meeting in front of a packed audience that the case had been thrown out of court but Warwick Heal, the lawyer for the residents committee, says that is simply untrue. “In fact, and you can quote me on this, it’s total bullshit.” Jerry says the action will “definitely” be decided in court. “We now have 189 lease holders who have signed on to be plaintiffs in this case and the meeting confirmed and ratified the committee’s decision to support the high court action and the establishment of a war chest trust for the purpose of funding the court action. “The meeting also authorised the committee and its officers joining the [court] action as plaintiffs and the committee to conduct the high court action as directed by legal advice,” he said on Tuesday.

Tracey Lynch and Steve Garnett have been sent a second notice to pay up or face losing their land. The couple received the notice last Friday which gives them a final ten days to pay the more than $1 million awarded to the New Zealand Fire Service, Waimea Rural Fire Committee and the insurers for Nelson Forests Ltd or put together a reasonable solution about how the debt will be cleared. Their story featured in last week’s Waimea Weekly and they say they’ve had a huge response, with thousands of dollars being pledged to a fundraising website set up by a friend to try to raise the money
needed to pay the settlement. They have also attracted plenty of media interest from other newspapers, radio stations and television programmes. Tracey says people on the street have even given her hugs since the story was reported. She says the latest notice is another blow but it was expected and she is now working with a lawyer to try to come to an arrangement without having to give up their beloved property at Glenhope. “We do feel much better about things now than we did a week ago. Even people saying nice things to us, it just makes you feel more normal and less stupid.” The court decision was three and a half

years after a rural fire that started on Tracey and Steve’s property destroyed forestry and another family’s home. They didn’t have liability insurance on their bed and breakfast cabins so were responsible for the costs of fighting the fire. Tracey says they are far from out of the woods and the likelihood is that they will still lose their property but there is hope. “People have been really generous with the donations to the website and we’ve even had phone calls from the North Island from people wanting to help. It’s been overwhelming really.” To donate to their cause visit www.tripletui.com.

Local finds a niche with canvass pants Sick of never being able to find suitable pants for the outdoors, Caleb Hill decided he would make his own. The 26 year old, who works as an auto trimmer at Mortimer’s Auto Upholstery in Richmond, says the idea came about when he wanted to find a decent pair of pants that would last – also taking his love of the outdoors into consideration. “I have worked with canvas quite a bit and I knew that it would be a good product to make some clothes out of,” he says. “I ended up making a couple of pairs for some mates who use them for hunting.” Under the official name Gors-tec, Caleb says the heavy duty canvas pants are perfect for most outdoor activities, including hunting, tramping, mountain biking and tradies. “With the 12 ounce pants gorse can’t puncture it. At the end of the day I’m just trying to make a pair of pants that are extremely good quality, made in Nelson and are at an affordable price.” Along with gorse protection, he lists benefits such as breathability, mould protection, water resistant barriers,
wind protection, UV protection, and quick drying qualities, making them the perfect pair of trousers for the outdoors and for heavy duty work. There are two weights, 12 oz and 8 oz. The pants are come in a variety of sizes ranging from extra small through to extra large and he can also customise them. “We go to great lengths to source the best New Zealand made products including webbing used in the New Zealand Army and heavy duty YKK zips. We have also spent a lot of time finding canvas that is comfortable to wear in everyday use.” Caleb has been selling them out of Mortimer’s Upholstery and at the Nelson and Motueka markets on the weekends. Having initially wanted to become an outdoor education teacher when he left school, Caleb says his expectations for the business “aren’t huge”. “If I can sell it off one day that will be fine but if it’s just enough to make a
bit on the side then I’d be happy. I don’t hope to become a millionaire from this I’m just rolling along and taking the opportunities as they come.” He is currently sourcing 100 per cent Dupont Kevlar in order to make motorcycle pants, something he was quite excited about as he would be the only person in New Zealand with the licence to use this particular material. For more information on Gors-tec as a brand, sizes and styles, contact Caleb on 027 362 0048 or email Gors-tec@ hotmail.com.

Free funding expo returns
Lynne Ehau, president of the Waimea Soroptimist group, and member Annette Greenland get ready for the fashion parade and breakfast this weekend. Photo: Sinead Ogilvie.
Soroptimists to host fashion show
Only a few tickets remain for the Waimea Soroptimist group fashion fundraiser this Saturday. The event will see ticketholders treated to a fashion parade and breakfast at the Boathouse. President of the group, Lynne Ehau, says the fundraising venture is almost a sellout show with just 10 tickets remaining to what she says will be a “fantastic event.” The fashion parade and breakfast will kick off at 9am. Tickets can be purchased from Beetees Nelson.
The Nelson-Tasman free Funding Expo is back and bigger than ever. The team, which includes representatives from Volunteer Nelson, Tasman District Council, Arts Council Nelson, Nelson City Council, Sport Tasman and Department of Internal Affairs have organised another full day of information, training and networking for volunteers and workers involved in the not-for-profit sector. “We’ve had a fantastic team working on this year’s expo to help provide people with the skills to manage, fund and grow their not-for-profit organisations,” says co-organiser Judene Edgar. This is the
seventh year the expo has been held, and it is now seen as a reliable one stop shop for community groups, charities, event organisers, schools and sports clubs reliant on grants and fundraising. “We have some new and exciting workshops this year including Liam Ryan, festival director of the Woollaston Jazz and Blues Festival, who will provide insight into planning the funding for and delivery of public events including community versus corporate relationship building and developing strategic partnerships with sponsors. Tina Reid, executive director of the NZ Founda-
tion of Voluntary Welfare Organisations and TechSoup will also be there to discuss keeping up with IT and fundraising strategies.” The free Funding Expo is on Friday June 7 at the Hope Community Church on Ranzau Road opposite Ranzau School. Doors open at 8.30am. Workshops run from 9.30am–3pm. There will be a cafe with quality handmade snacks, meals and beverages during the lunch break. Cash purchases only. If people would like more information they can contact Volunteer Nelson on 546 7681 or go to www.itson.co.nz.

exclusive
Q: I have got myself into a bit of
trouble financially. I got behind in the rent and power, to pay for my car repairs and my child’s birthday. Now my landlord keeps texting me, and my power is going to be disconnected. Who will help me? A: You can help yourself by: 1. First talking to your landlord, and offer to pay an extra amount each week to catch up the rent. 2. Phoning your power company and ask to pay extra each week to cover the arrears 3. If the power company wants more than you can afford, you will have to find extra money to keep the power on. If you need further help, seek budget advice and maybe ask WINZ for a loan towards your power bill if you are receiving a benefit To prevent you getting into this situation again: Always pay your rent and power as soon as you get income into your bank. They are a PRIORITY Save for car costs weekly: include registration, warrant of fitness and maintenance. Then you will have money available to fix your car Also put money aside for presents and birthday celebrations. Also think outside the square when organising a birthday party for your child. It doesn’t need to cost much to be an exciting celebration.

WEDNESDAY 22 May 2013 PEOPLE’S FAVOURITE: Averill Moore shows off her artwork which was voted the people’s choice at the Tasman Visual Arts Winter Exhibition over the weekend. Averill was thrilled with the response with a record number of visitors attending the two-day exhibition that had more than 200 items on display. “It’s been our most successful exhibition,” she says.
Yee Ha! It’s Nelson Country Music on Saturday night!
Garin College acts steal the show Garin College confirmed its status as Nelson’s top music school, leading the field at the Smokefreerockquest regional final on the Theatre Royal on Friday night. Winners from both sections at the teen music event came from Garin – the same school that produced 2011 national winners The Peasants. Four piece indie-pop-funk group Oh Blok won the band section at the sold-out event and school-mates Livvy and Anna won the new category for solo/duos. Oh Blok’s keyboard player Paddy Sanders says it was the band’s third attempt at Smokefreerockquest, although it was the first time with Year 10 student Kieran O’Connor as the front man. The rest of the band consists of drummer Josh Barker and guitarist Louie Persico. Paddy puts Oh Blok’s success down to their love of music. “We just love the music we play and the crowd makes us pumped up,” he says. “We’d love to make careers out of music and this is a
great start - but we know it will be hard.” Solo/duo winners Livvy Nott and Anna Robinson started playing together only three weeks ago when their music teacher suggested entering Smokefreerockquest would be good experience for them. However, they’re both from musical families, with Livvy’s older sister Georgia fronting The Peasants before opting last year to go solo. Garin College music teacher Kyle Proffit was really proud of the effort that the students put in and says the results are a sign of the development and inspiration passed down from The Peasants. “They’ve all got really high expectations now and a great work ethic,” he says. Second place in the band category went to poppunk three piece Paper City and second place in the solo/duo category went to Laura-Mae Parker from Nelson Girls College. These four acts have the opportunity to gain selection for the national final in September.

Dinosaur damage: I think it’s sad to see the icon that the late Levis Johnson made has been destroyed. But still good to see the other two relics, although aged, still standing. (Via text). Rates too high: The TDC will not only help flood victims dispose of water ruined goods etc but will not allow another two parking spaces in Croucher St for the Nbus. And don’t get me started on the huge amount of rates I pay on my postage stamp-sized piece of land in Waimea Village. A Mulholland (via text). Rockquest: Me and my mates have just got back from Rockquest, it was wicked. Good work to the local musicians who made it a great show. There were heaps of people there too. (Via text). Do you think dairies should take a moral stand and stop selling legal highs, or if it’s legal is it fair enough? Yes absolutely, we’re hearing a lot more of the tragic consequences of these drugs. Sharon May Patterson. If it’s legal is it fair enough? Worst question I’ve ever heard, why should it be acceptable for synthetic cannabis, that “harms” people to be sold and
legal, but not cannabis, a plant that in its 15,000 years of history has never harmed a person, if anything, healed. Doesn’t make sense to me, like alcohol and cigarettes, it seems the only thing the government is interested in is our money and not concerned about our health, safety or wellbeing. Leroy Bull. Is it fair that a couple is set to lose it all because a fire started on their property? No, it was an accident. Not like they did it on purpose. I really feel for them. Bonnie Geiger. No, not fair. It really doesn’t pay to be honest with insurance companies after reading this. People making honest, legitimate claims always seem to come out worse off than those who rip the system off. This was clearly an accident and these people are being treated like criminals (or worse than criminals as people who do this deliberately get a slap on the wrist with a wet bus ticket by comparison). Tania Brunell. They didnt have liability insurance though! Tim Kolk. No this is not fair, the legal system in NZ is a joke, this is disgusting, poor people. I can only imagine the strain and stress these poor peolpe are going through. Yes this was clearly an accident

I guess this is what happens when your honest. Sometimes it pays to lie. Rebecca Jacobsen. Totally not fair. This could happen to anyone. If you read carefully you can see they thought they were insured properly? But it turned out they weren’t. Honesty pays? Fashion Island Focus
May has been a busy month at Fashion Island. Talent Quest 2013 was great fun and we saw some very high quality talent indeed; the judges genuinely had a hard time choosing the winners. A big thank you to everyone who entered and came along to support the talent on the day! The other highlight of the day was the fashion show; our lovely models showcased new autumn/ winter collections from Jacquie E, Kimberleys, Merric, Just Jeans, Barkers and Rodd and Gunn – there really are some gorgeous garments in our stores at great prices so make sure you drop by and check out the new season looks today. The show was supported by the Body Shop who did the models make-up using their brand new eye-popping colours for the glamorous eye make- up. Lush products were used to finish off the hair styling and the girls in store have also just taken delivery a new
range of solid shampoo bars to keep your locks looking lovely.
Pick of the week
Have you heard about the Cotton On ‘Mission for a Million’ project? There are further details in store at Cotton on Kids but the aim is to raise $1 million to aid 100,000 villagers in Southern Uganda so that the Cotton on foundation can carry out a number of great initiatives. These include building a new health hub in Mannya village including a children’s ward, HIV centre, nurse quarters and an operating theatre; building a new health hub in Busibo village and delivering health programs to 17 villages in surrounding areas. You can help towards their goal by purchasing any of their fundraising products at Cotton on Kids such as these funky fluoro bands…they only cost $1 so it’s easy to do your bit to help!

Jared and Lauren Rameka-iti with their baby Anika who was born on Plunket’s birthday last week. With them is charge mid-wife manager Lois McTaggart, Plunket’s car seat technician Tenielle Delport and Plunket’s community services coordinator Gayle Petch. Photo: Andrew Board.
Plunket baby gets first presents Anika Rameka-iti will never forget Plunket’s birthday, although she’s not likely to remember her first birthday presents. Anika was the only baby born on Plunket’s birthday, May 14, and as a result her parents got surprised with a goodie pack, including a car seat and savings account with sponsor BNZ. Plunket’s community services manager, Gayle Petch, says each year Plunket arranges to give a goodie pack to the first baby in Nelson born on their birthday. “It’s a really nice way to recognise Plunket’s birthday and at the same time give something back to some local parents and their delicious new baby.” Anika’s parents, Jared and Lauren, say they were shocked with the gifts and were happy to be a
part of Plunket’s celebrations. “When we got pregnant with our first child we were in Australia and they don’t have anything like Plunket so we were really happy to come home to have our family and get support from Plunket, I think it’s really important,” says Lauren. Amongst the pack was a car seat donated by Plunket, a BNZ teddy bear, a $100 voucher to the Lone Star, a $100 voucher to Nelson Beauty Therapy and a backpack filled with bits and pieces from Nelson Resene. BNZ have also set up a savings account for Anika with $30 already in it. BNZ are also hosting a sausage sizzle this week to raise funds for Plunket. Gayle says Nelson Plunket works with around 1000 families in the region each year.

The rare white heron (Kotuku) is a national treasure and Whataroa is the base for the world renowned trips to the White Heron Sanctuary, in the Waitangi Roto Reserve. This is the only place in New Zealand that these beautiful birds nest ,along with the royal spoonbill and the little shag. Tours can be taken into this area all year round but to view the white heron, royal spoonbill and little shag, one needs to take the tour from September to March. There is no access from Okarito into the White Heron Sanctuary. September heralds the return of the white heron to it’s nesting site in the Waitangi-Roto stream near Whataroa. Approximately 30 pair will converge on this secret little area and another season will begin! This is the 24th season for Ken and Shirley Arnold and White Heron Sanctuary Tours as they prepare to take the groups of enthusiastic bird watchers into this pristine area. In fact, you don’t have to just be a birdwatcher to join this tour. People come from all walks of life to experience the peacefulness of the Heron Sanctuary, the walk in the rainforest and by contrast, the jetboat ride as it meanders down the Waitangi
taona river through the river flats with superlative views of the mountains including Mts Cook and Tasman. An amazing fun packed 2.5 hours. Phone 0800 523456 to book.

Local store to make TV debut Everyone’s heard of Sesame St, Shortland St and Coronation Street and soon, Edward St will be a household name too. Wakefield’s main street is soon to be world famous in New Zealand with film crews descending on the little mecca to film a TV advertisement focused around the local Four Square, which was chosen out of every other Four Square in the South Island to be the subject of Foodstuffs latest advertising campaign showcasing the little big supermarkets that can be found in most
towns around the country. Four Square Wakefield owner Stuart Hore says he and his wife Jacqueline are proud to be thrust into the spotlight and say they can’t wait to see the finished result after filming finishes this weekend. “We are thrilled that they have chosen our Four Square here in Wakefield, it’s an exciting time for us.” Creative Director for the project, Colin Gould of Wilson Ideation says the Four Square and the village of Wakefield ticked all the boxes when it came to choosing the location
the advert would be filmed. “We looked around at different locations all over the South Island and stumbled across the little gem of Wakefield.” The mini episode style advert will focus on the local Four Square and the integral role it plays within its community. The project is expected to use a cast of more than 12 people from the Tasman area, including Wakefield school students, several Wakefield groups and businesses including a local hair salon, the vet and the volunteer fire brigade.

Bonanza a big success The Plunket Baby Bonanza drew in a 400 strong crowd on Saturday, with numbers up on last year’s event says organiser Lisa Foote. “We had 60 stalls this year, it was fantastic to see so many people come along and support the event and to see the goods go back out into the community to those who really need
them,” she says. The event is a major fundraiser for Nelson Tasman Plunket and while $820 was raised for the organisation, Lisa says it is also a community service, helping local people to buy affordable children’s clothes, toys and nursery items. “It’s a great way for local people who
may not be able to buy these things brand new, get second hand items at a great price.” All proceeds from the event remain within the local community, going towards play groups, courses and maintenance. The next Plunket Baby Bonanza is set to be held on October 19.

By Murray McCaskey, St David’s Presbyterian Mid-morning on the Monday, 15 or so hours after the deluge hit Richmond and Stoke, a friend of ours looked out of her window to the park and playground by her home. A group of small boys were helping clean up the mess with their toy wheelbarrows and small play spade. The little troopers made a heart-warming sight. Add that to all the stories of help and encouragement which emerged out of the clean up, and not forgetting the patient advice of council staff nor the contractors working through the night to minimize damage. The stress and loss which many have experienced remain very near the surface, but it’s important we not forget how so many gave unstintingly of their time and energy to help others whether friend or stranger. In ancient times, the Hebrew people (Jews) would have attributed this kind of disaster to God’s punishment upon their disobedience to his commands. Some may still think like this: a cartoon published after the floods made this connection between God’s judgement and what
happened in our locality. This is not what most Christians believe or declare and the reason why is that in the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, his followers were reassured that God’s plans are for our good and his actions are for our wellbeing. Natural disasters are just that – disasters occurring within the natural order of the world in which we live. But God is deeply committed to us, whether the distress and anxiety is the result of suffering an injury or illness or whether from some natural disaster. We know this first because of the Bible’s promise and second because of the testimony of others before us who have walked the road of suffering or loss. It is perhaps helpful to recall some words of Jesus recorded in Matthew’s Gospel, where he talked about the sun rising on both bad and good people and the rain falling on both the righteous and the unrighteous. Jesus talks of nature casting both its delights and its disorder equally on us all. But knowing we are not alone – neither without God nor without one another – makes all the difference when the rain keeps on falling.

Tactix keen to return Nelson might not have been a happy hunting ground for the EasiYo Tactix but coach Leigh Gibbs has endorsed the region’s supporters. Following Sunday night’s 64-55 defeat to the Perth-based West Coast Fever, the first time Trans-Tasman netball had been played in Nelson and just the second time the ANZ Championship has been played here too, Leigh says it is important to continue a relationship right across the Mainland region. “I’m still proud of what we put out there, even though it wasn’t the result we were after, we just showed some fantastic netball and I’m sure the crowd enjoyed it,” she says. “I want every young girl that’s watching here today in the Tasman area to want to be a Tactic.” Both 2013 ANZ Championship fixtures played in Nelson sold out and Leigh says the noise was from noticeable from the court. “The cheering, the enthusiasm and it was helped by the MC. It was a great atmosphere and it would’ve been fantastic if we could get more in.” On the court, Leigh highlighted a weak second quarter as being the difference between the two sides. Having trailed 19-17 after the first quarter, the Tactix were outscored 13-8 in the second. “We turned over too much ball and we were scoring so well in that first quarter that it was like we hit a wall.” With only two wins on the board this season, she was still hopeful the side could bank a few more Jo Harten in action during the EasiYo Tactix to end the season on a high note. “We definitely 64-55 loss to the West Coast Fever at the Tra- don’t want to settle on the two but we’re just looking at the game ahead.” falgar Centre on Sunday. The snapper have now moved north and are around D’urville Island with a few stragglers still around Okiwi Bay and Delaware Bay. Unfortunately the spikey dogs have also moved into the neighbourhood and taken up residence, along with their partners in crime, the razor gang. If your gear can survive these unwanted pests, the Sounds are starting to fish really well with some excellent big winter snapper being landed. There have been some good reports of fat gurnard being landed in Tasman Bay out on the sand and kahawai are still in massive numbers inside the cut and right along the bay to D’urville Island. Kingfish will now be in Stephens’s passage but make sure you are well prepared with your gear to take on these beasts of the sea. Get into your local tackle shop and spend as much money as you can afford to make sure your gear will enable you to land these very powerful fish. In our next article we will go into what type of rods, reels and rigs are best for fishing this area.

The spat farms have slowed down now and will need to wait until next season when the water starts to warm up again. Also looking at the calendar it shows the school holidays coming up and winter can be a great time to get the kids out fishing. Even though the weather is colder it is generally much more settled with little wind and slight seas and can be a great source of entertainment. Taking kids fishing doesn’t necessarily require a boat and can be done from a wharf or beach. It can be for as little or as long as you like depending on your patience and keeping the kids occupied. Kids usually aren’t too worried if they don’t catch anything but enjoy the process of trying to catch a fish. Whatever the outcome of a day’s fishing it always comes with plenty of laughs, can cost you nothing but provide stories and pictures that kids will always treasure. Give it a go. You might be pleasantly surprised if you’ve never fished with kids before, at how excited they get at the prospect of catching a fish.

Charity fight lures sports Rabbits leave it late stars and businesspeople In one corner is a 23 yearold part time personal trainer ready to kick-start his boxing career. In the other corner is the third generation manager of Gibbons Construction, a 38 year old, who was eager to take on the challenge, no matter the opponent. While the Cameron-Ryan Francey versus Scott Gibbons match-up might not be the headliner at next month’s Fight 4 Victory charity boxing event, it does epitomise the novelty. Next month’s Fight 4 Victory has brought together well known Nelson businessmen and women, local sporting personalities and the mayor for the event that is raising funds for the Victory Boxing Club – a club used to create a positive impact on young kids in the community. Across 13 bouts, 26 boxers will go through three two minute rounds at the Trafalgar Centre on June 1 and organisers say tickets are selling fast, with 50 corporate tables already sold out. The Stables Richmond Rabbits won a tricky away assignment in Blenheim on Saturday, beating the Wairau Taniwha 22-20. The Taniwha got off to the best possible start, slicing through the Rabbits defence to score two early tries to lead 10-0 after just 15 minutes. However, some strong carries from prop forwards Jeremy Parata and Tamaio Piripi enabled the Rabbits to get some good field position, which resulted in its first try of the match. But that would be the only try the Rabbits would score until the back end of the first half. The Taniwha continued to make inroads in the defence and put two more tries on the board to please the home crowd and go into the half time break up 16-8. For the second straight week, assistant coach Deon Charles used some
stern words during the break to help motivate the Rabbits. But all looked lost when the Taniwha crossed again under the sticks, pushing the score out to 20-8 with 20 minutes to go. Then up stepped the Rabbits. Sticking to its game plan, consistent pressure and repeat possessions enabled Richmond Rabbits to launch attack after attack at the strong Taniwha pack, eventually wearing them down to score back to back tries setting up a grandstand finish. Down 20-16 with three minutes to go, stand out substitute dummy half Sunny Morgan crossed for what was the winning try, much to the celebration of his team mates. The Stables Richmond Rabbits now turn their sights towards the competition newcomers the Victory Phoenix Vikings.

Waimea Old Boys Rugby Club Bs lose by three www.wobrfc.co.nz
Brent “Stew” Stuart
Waimea Old Boys number eight Ben Coman forces his way through a tackle during Saturday’s win. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
WOB topple Stoke Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys only needed 40 minutes to seal the deal on Saturday. In a rampant first half display, Waimea had already secured a bonus point for scoring four tries as it led 34-0 at the break against Accessman Stoke, a side celebrating its annual club day. Halfback Kaide Whiting, wing Joe Higgins,
new midfielder Marty Banks and fullback James Lowe all scored tries in the first half, although a Billy Guyton penalty was the only points it could score in the second half. Luckily enough for the side, a formidable defensive line only allowed Stoke to score once in the game with winger Chris Little crossing midway through the second half.
The forecast for rain didn’t happen, but the sun didn’t shine either for the Super Liquor Waimea Old Boys division two side. Waimea took on the competition’s second place team and last year’s champions Murchison at ‘The Jungle’ on Saturday. During the week the Waimea boys had talked about starting the game strong and for the first 20 minutes they simply had to weather the onslaught by Murchison, which was true to how the game panned out. In fact by the 23rd minute, Murchison were already up 10-0 courtesy of a converted try and a penalty. The try occurred when the Waimea boys allowed the country lads to run through the defensive untouched. However, in the 29th minute the tide started to turn with Waimea getting its hands on the pill. First five John Higgins did a nifty chip through for left wing Connor McBrydie to gather up and dot down for a try. The conversion proved a struggle for John though, leaving the score at 10-5. Waimea received the ball back from the kick off and kept the heat on the Murchison defence. A confident run by the zappy fullback Mitchell Bateman was only brought to an abrupt end by a late hit from a Murchison defender and the resulting penalty was a quick tap and go by Waimea and some good hands paid
Women excel at sevens tournament Julia Law
On Saturday our WOB women came out firing for the first round robin of a newly introduced rugby sevens tournament included in this season’s draw. For many of the team, sevens was a new experience and one that the players not only embraced, but really excelled in.
SG
With two Stoke teams and a team from Riwaka, the competition was set to be tough. There were few minor injuries but other than that our WOB ladies took it all in their stride, winning each game convincingly and finishing the day with only two tries scored against them. It was a nice way to mix up our season
SG
and a huge congratulations and shout out to all the team and supporters on making it a great day. This coming Saturday the team is off to play Riwaka to start off the second round of the regular season and is hoping to get another win on the board against the newest team in the competition.
off. Again John was involved, providing a timely offload to right wing Corey Herbert to have his turn over the chalk. Unfortunately John couldn’t find the centre of the uprights so at the half break scores where locked at 10 a piece. First blood in the second 40 was always going to be vital and after four minutes this went to Murchison by the way of a successful penalty kick, after a Waimea tackle was deemed unsafe by the Canterbury-based referee on the day. Murchison took the lead 13-10. Six minutes later the same penalty opportunity was granted to Waimea as a ruck infringement happened in front of the Murchison posts. John made no mistake this time as Waimea locked the scores up to 13-all. Play then seesawed for a short term before Murchison was able to mount sustained pressure against the WOB line, perhaps they should have paid rent as they spent the next 20 minutes trying to break the impressive Waimea defence. Finally this paid off in what was the final points of the day by way of a penalty on the Waimea 22 metre line, no mistake by the solid Murchison boot to take the lead and the game in the 74th minute, making the final score 16-13 in favour of the visitors. Again there was another solid performance by flanker Ruben Finn with some bruising tackles that deserved a mention. Likewise the ‘player of the day performance’ by stand-in prop Kerry Walker.

Consistent Richmond beat Nayland Robbie’s Beer Cafe Richmond Black was out of the blocks quick smart when it met Nayland College A in the Grade 2 game at Saxton Courts on Saturday. Richmond followed the riding instructions of new coach, Deb Vincent to the letter as the side dominated its college opponents in all facets of play. Goal keep, Janelle MacGregor stamped her mark on the game from the onset with aggressive rebounding. While Richmond’s shooters Toni Lindsay and Melissa Marfell found their range early to shoot 11 from 12, the less experienced
students struggled to convert and were 1-11 in arrears at the first break. In the second quarter Nayland took the court rejuvenated while Richmond lost its structure. A timely injury after Nayland had scored five unanswered goals saw Richmond regain its rhythm, and although the team did get back on track it was outscored 4-7. Richmond claimed the third quarter 9-7 on the back of some impressive defensive work by Janelle. She communicated and directed play to combine well with goal defence, Imogen Smith. Richmond fired on all cylinders in the final stanza when it again dominated to the tune of 13-4 to take the game 37-19. Deb says she was enjoying working with her players and it is her responsibility to give them the tools to use, however it was up to the girls on the court. She was happy with three of the four quarters on Saturday as the players linked well, the ball when through the hoop and the through court defence.
Carol Cook
Netball Reporter editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz Nayland coach, Andrea Reidie says she felt her girls were shell shocked at the beginning of the game, however once they adjusted to the style of play from their more experienced opposition there were more points on the board. Premier preview: At 5:45pm defending champions Jacks OPD will be odds on favourites to take Stoke Nelson Building Society. Jacks will want a more consistent four quarters while Stoke NBS will be looking on their attacking performance.
The game of the night is likely to be Waimea College versus Prices Pharmacy. While Waimea have maximum points with two wins, Prices are sitting with one bonus point after their one goal loss to Richmond in Round 1. On paper, Waimea should have the upper hand as they have the luxury of changing combinations if necessary. Prices however, have played some enterprising netball but have fallen short towards the end of the game. Should everything click for 60 minutes Prices could mount a serious challenge to Waimea. At 8:15pm Taylors Contracting Wanderers face an uphill battle with having lost Justine Battersby with a ruptured Achilles tendon when they meet Richmond Robbie’s Bar & Bistro. Richmnond have experience, height, skill and speed in all areas.

Resource Management Act 1991 Tasman Resource Management Plan Proposed Private Plan Change Requests
Current Dog Registration expires 30 June 2013 The Dog Control Act 1996 requires that all dogs over the age of three months be registered for the current Registration Year. The Registration Year runs from 01 July to 30 June.
Foodstuffs Ltd: Three Brothers Corner Commercial Zone, Richmond and Network Tasman Ltd: Extension to Industrial Schedule Area, Hope
Registration forms for all dogs currently on Council’s database will be posted in early June. If you own a dog and do not receive a registration form by 14 June 2013, please contact your nearest Council office.
Council has accepted for notification under clauses 5 and 26 of Schedule 1 of the Resource Management Act, two Private Plan Change Requests to the Tasman Resource Management Plan.
The registration fee structure for 2013/2014 remains unchanged from the previous two registration periods:
Request 1
• Urban Dog
$50.00
• Rural Dog
$30.00
Requester: Foodstuffs South Island Properties Ltd Location: 31-37 Bateup Road, 135 Gladstone Road, and 13, 15, 21 and 32 Paramu Place, Richmond Purpose: To rezone 1.64 hectares of land from Residential to Commercial to accommodate a New World supermarket and small-scale retail/commercial development, along with associated car parking, access and landscaping. Request 2 Requester: Network Tasman Limited Location: 52, 32, 24 and 18 Main Road and 1 Norman Andrews Place, Hope Purpose: To expand industrial Schedule 17.5A in the Tasman Resource Management Plan on to adjoining land owned by Network Tasman Limited at Main Road Hope, including land subject to designation D41 Network Tasman Hope Depot and make consequential rule amendments.
Whether a dog is Urban or Rural is determined by the size of the property on which the dog resides. Dogs on properties less than one hectare are deemed Urban, dogs on properties of one hectare or more are deemed Rural. A penalty equating to 50% of relevant Urban/Rural fees will be imposed on owners of dogs that have not been registered by 1 August 2013. The cost of dog control and administration is funded by dog owners, accordingly all revenue received and retained by Council in relation to dogs is expended solely on dog related activities, these include: • Compliance with Dog Control Legislation – Registration, microchipping requirements – Maintenance of local and national Dog databases. • Enforcement of Dog Control Legislation – Providing designated Dog Control Officers
Submissions
– Providing a system for the lodging and recording of complaints
Any person may make a submission on any part of the Private Plan Changes. Submissions can be sent to the Manager Policy, Tasman District Council, Private Bag 4, Richmond 7050 and will be accepted by Council until 4.00 pm on Monday, 24 June 2013. Submission forms are available as indicated below under “Availability of Private Plan Change Requests”.
– Providing a physical response to incidents and complaints
Submissions must be in writing, clearly indicating support or opposition to the provisions, the decision that the submitter wishes the Council to make (with reasons), whether or not the submitter wishes to be heard in support of the submission and an address for service or contact address. Consideration of Proposed Changes
– Providing a physical response in relation to animal welfare – Classifying dangerous and menacing dogs – Issuing infringement notices for offences – Prosecuting offences under the Dog Control Act 1996. • Providing Dog pound facilities • Education of the general public and local interest groups in regards to; owner obligations, safety around dogs, and other dog related topics.
After submissions have closed, Council will publish a summary of all decisions requested by submitters. There will be a further period of 10 working days within which further submissions in support or opposition to those submissions made may be sent to Council. Council will then hold hearings on all submissions and all submitters may be heard. After the Council considers the submissions and makes its decisions, any submitter who is not satisfied with the decision has the right of appeal to the Environment Court.
