New business milking it Sinead Ogilvie Reporter

reporter@nelsonweekly.co.nz You’ll find Andrew and Julia Young up at 5am bringing in the cows for milking, but unlike your usual dairy farmer, they’ll be bringing in just 20 cows instead of the usual 500, the perfect number to keep their small dairy farm thriving. It’s been just two months since their boutique business venture opened to the public and already they are selling upwards of 800 litres of untreated, unpasteurised, completely natural milk per week to local families who are cottoning on to the idea of living a little bit more organically. The initiative is hoped to encourage more tourists into the town and give businesses an opportunity to advertise to those using the network. Setup costs will be paid for by Richmond Unlimited but it is hoped it will be self-sufficient within six months. There will be a one hour limit per user, per day. In an unrelated announcement last Friday, Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says free WiFi will be installed in Nelson’s CBD “by Christmas” and labelled it a “natural and desirable progression for the city’s economic growth”. Richmond Unlimited committee member Steve Page says the group is “very, very pleased” to be a SEE PAGE 2
