Santa Claus comes to town Evelyn Louis, Kelly Waller and Khloe Waller were some of the lucky kids that were able to meet Santa Claus during his annual visit to the Richmond Mall this December. Santa has been meeting some children in the region on the nice list in the lead up to Christmas and will be at the mall until Christmas Eve before heading back to the North Pole. World’s most invasive ant set to explode Jo Kent Reporter
jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz
One of the world’s most problematic ants is set to explode in Richmond this summer after a wet winter and humidity have created the perfect breeding ground for the pest.
The Argentine ant is on the top 10 list of invasive species on the planet and pose a serious threat to New Zealand’s biodiversity. Tasman District Council biosecurity officer Ken Wright says they accidentally arrived at Port Nelson in 2001 and since then, they’ve infiltrated the whole region.
“The first place they were detected in Richmond was a bakery on Queen Street. Now they are all over Wensley Road and are rampant in the Hart Road and Hill Street area.” Debug Nelson owner Shane Warland says they are aggressive and territorial and can bite people.
“They literally eat every other insect in the garden, good or bad. I’ve been to places in Richmond where you can’t put your kids out on the back lawn as they will get covered in ants and get bitten. They’ve even been known to crawl into cots and eat the contents of a baby’s nappy.” Besides being a major household and garden pest, Argentine
ants pose a serious threat to our natural areas and biodiversity because of their aggressiveness and appetite. “These ants will also invade your property and they are on the rise this summer because of the weather conditions this year,” Shane says.

are black. It’s been estimated that Argentine ants will require $68 million to control if they become widespread across the country.
Another critter which is thriving in Richmond, more so than in previous years, is the cockroach. “I get daily call outs to deal with them.” Shane says. “It’s mainly to do with the wet winter we’ve had followed by this humidity. “The Gisborne cockroach is an opportunist so will enter your property for a warm place or to hide in a dark spot.” He says that although cockroaches have a bad reputation, this particular New Zealand roach is often misunderstood. “They are harmless and don’t spread disease or bite. They are more interested in rotten vegetation,” Shane says. He says the trouble is people see one or two in their home or office and suspect an infestation. “They are booming. Everything is going the cockroach’s way.”

Opening delayed for new Richmond cinema Jo Kent Reporter
jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz
The much-anticipated Richmond cinema that was due for completion by the end of the year has been postponed due to ongoing delays associated with Covid-19. Construction of the Berryfields Crossing development is still underway with boutique cinema chain Silky Otter now due to open their doors in April. Silky Otter’s managing director Ahmed Almukhtar says there is no firm date but the company is targeting an opening for Easter 2022. He says the Richmond cinema will be exactly the same as the other sites in Auckland and Christchurch in terms of size and operation. “It will have eight screens, each with 48 luxury recliner seats. Customers can expect the next generation of cinema entertainment watching the latest in blockbuster and arthouse movies with state-of-the-art screen and sound technology.” Also on offer is a full-service bar and kitchen with real chefs and food which is delivered straight to your seat in the cinema. CEO Neil Lambert says people

Now they want more than just a film – they want an intimate, cosy, and welcoming environment that includes a glass of wine, great food, and great service. For us, bringing all of that together makes the ultimate cinema experience.” Structural plans for the cinema changed to accommodate the latest public health advice during the pandemic. “The cinema will now have the latest air filtration system complete with Covid filters to give an extra level of peace of mind for customers,” Neil says. The building will also house shops and eateries to the front,
while the cinema makes up the back area. On the development site there will also be a tavern and a preschool, both of which are still to be completed. The Richmond cinema will join the already up-and-running Auckland and Christchurch branches, while Queenstown and a second Auckland location in Ponsonby Central are due to open for business in 2022. The chain is a New Zealand owned and operated cinema company designed to change the way audiences enjoy movies. “As film lovers, we want people to not only watch what they want but have an experience so good they keep coming back for more,” says Ahmed.

Nothing slows down Santa

HELL Pizza Richmond closes: Hell Pizza Richmond will be closed for the foreseeable future. Hell Pizza chief executive Ben Cumming says during routine checks, administrative practices within the Richmond store that were not aligned with HELL’s values were uncovered and decisive action was taken to address them. These actions have resulted in the Richmond Franchise losing its contract. “We know this will be disappointing to HELL customers in the Nelson region, and we are looking to re-establish HELL in the area as soon as possible.”
There were plenty of wide eyes and smiles across Richmond on Sunday, thanks to a very special visitor from the North Pole. When Santa Claus heard this year’s Santa parade had to be cancelled due to Alert Level 2 restrictions, he, with the help of Richmond Unlimited, Grace Church, Tasman District Council and Pak’n Save organised their own mini parade. Starting from the car park behind Tasman District Library, Santa, alongside a troupe of angelic Grace Church choir singers, hit the streets on a 20km ride through Richmond. Richmond Unlimited administrator Sheena Murtagh says Santa was met with a lot of festive joy from the children across Richmond. “All the kids seemed super excited. Some were on the lookout for the rest of their families, on their scooters at the top of the street and scootering back to the family to tell them he was coming,” she says.
Wakefield holiday paper delivery: The Wakefield rural postie will not be delivering the Waimea Weekly over the holiday period. December 29 and January 12 editions can be collected from Wakefield and Brightwater Four Square stores and outside Bayleys in Wakefield. Lights still out in Sundial Square: The festoon lights planned for Sundial Square have arrived, but they can’t be switched on yet. Richmond Unlimited’s Sheena Murtagh says the control box is still ‘lost at sea.’ “We are working on another solution with lots of emails back and forth.” She is hoping for a solution in the next few weeks.

Families were lined up along the pavement with their camping chairs and picnic blankets. All was going to plan until Santa’s classic car began to overheat, the vintage model wasn’t used to such slow speeds travelling at about 10kmph. Thankfully, there was room for Santa on the Grace Church truck. When one passer-by heard about the broken-down car, he whipped to his garage and returned to escort Santa in style in his vintage 1931 Morris Minor. Peter Field became Santa’s driver for the last leg of the route along Berryfields. The Grace Church choir was a highlight of the day, still sounding beautiful until the last stop three hours later. Sheena says, while the day was great festive fun she’s sympathetic to the local businesses who benefit from the extra foot traffic each Christmas. “We haven’t been able to do main events along Queen St and the businesses do suffer, so it’s a general reminder to shop local,” she says.

Working on Christmas Day
Xmas a family affair
Jo Kent
St John paramedic Gary Tobin will work Christmas Day. Photo: Jenny Nicholson.
Gary’s working to help others at Christmas Jenny Nicholson Gary Tobin has worked a lot of Christmas Days and wouldn’t have it any other way. The St John Nelson Bays intensive care paramedic will work a full 12-hour shift on Christmas Day. “I work with a great bunch of people and we get into the spirit of it and have fun.” While the number of call-outs on the 25th is similar to other days, the type can be a bit different, and Gary says Christmas also makes a difference to how having to call an ambulance affects people.
“It could be an elderly person needing assistance getting back to their residential care facility after they have deteriorated during Christmas dinner at a family member’s home,” Gary says. “Or it could be an incident resulting from family tensions.” He says other call outs may be related to preventable incidents, with people injuring themselves while playing with a kid’s new toy or having one too many beers. The other people they are commonly called to help are those with mental health-related matters. “A lot of people get lonely at this
time of year,” he says. “Christmas just isn’t this big happy time for them.” Although his family cannot spend the day with him, they tend to celebrate throughout December and Gary has already handed out his presents. “We celebrate Christmas linear style,” he says. “Christmas is more of a season to us than just a day. We have Christmas Eve together.” Gary says paramedics will respond as soon as possible to life-threatening and serious incidents, but to remember there may be a delay getting an ambulance for non-urgent conditions.
For the Quinney family, Christmas Day is as much about working as it is being together. Operations manager for Quinney’s Bush Camp, Andrew Quinney, says the rest of the staff get the day off, but the family works. “My sister usually comes to help but this year will just be me, my girlfriend and my parents.” He says guests bring their own Christmas trees and decorate their pitches with fairy lights and there is a real happy vibe. “People play Christmas songs and bring their presents to open, so it’s nice to see that going on.” His day starts at 6am, when Andrew will go down to light the boilers for hot showers on the campsite. “We then check the bathrooms and do the extra Covid sanitisation requirements. That usually takes us until 9am.” After that, it’s a family breakfast of pancakes, fresh fruit and bacon. “Mum always puts on a nice spread for us.” Someone has to go check the fire is still lit every half hour or so throughout the

The office stays open to 8pm which is when they are finally off the clock. “It’s a full-on day but we are used to it.”

Campbell family history – Part Three John Cretney
We made it! 2021 has been a long, and at times challenging year for many in our community, so I hope you all have a much-needed break over the Christmas period and enjoy the sunshine with your friends and family. I want to thank Nelsonians for their tremendous effort in getting our vaccination rates up - this week we will reach our goal of 90% fully vaccinated here in Nelson Tasman. This is a fantastic effort, and I want to thank everyone who got vaccinated to protect themselves and our community. I also want to thank our vaccinators who have worked so hard to keep us all safe! Have a great Stewart Henry 027 454 5112 summer - you’ve earned it. 546 9290 I’d like to acknowledge our essential workers who are working over the Christmas and New Year period Stacey Howden 027 541 0164 thank you! Please remember to be 547 2476 kind and respectful to everyone working over the Christmas period. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year.
Alan Le Grand Campbell had not seen his father George since 1916, so in 1928 he took a secondment as adjutant to the Wellington regiment to get some time in New Zealand. Sadly, his mother had died in the 1919 flu epidemic. During his visit he married Barbara Marchbanks, youngest daughter of James Marchbanks, who was chief engineer of the Wellington Harbour Board. The following year, he was reposted to India and, under parental pressure, the couple were persuaded to leave their baby John in the care of his grandmother as it was thought a child wouldn’t be able to survive conditions

However, second son Donald James Campbell (known as Hamish, who was the descendant featured in the medals story in the Waimea Weekly recently) was born soon after their return to India. So, on their next leave to New Zealand, they firmly collected John, and took both children back again.
After India, the family returned to Glasgow, the regimental headquarters. Soon after their arrival, industrial Glasgow became firmly gripped in the throes of the slump and promotional prospects in the army became very limited. Alan decided to resign his commission and return to New Zealand where conditions for bringing up a family were considerably easier. They finally bought the Glasgow house off Station Road (now Songer Street) where they moved to in January 1937. An early photograph soon after the house was built in 1914 showed a gaunt house standing in a bare paddock – to which Barbara commented, “I don’t want to live there!”

The kitchen was dark with varnished match lining and a single light on the ceiling. The house itself was cream with red facings and half the timbering was in black. Based on family lineage as Campbells of Aberuchill, the Campbells adopted the name Aberuchill for their Stoke home. To do this Captain Campbell sought approval in the late 1930s from the 7th Baronet Sir Jack Campbell (a younger man and his cousin once removed) who was head of the sect at that time. Sir Jack, born in 1884, died in 1965. CORRECTION: In part two last week, it was mistakenly printed that Alan’s medals went to his brother Hamish, instead of his son Hamish, who is 91.

Kellyanne’s busy schedule pays off Jenny Nicholson Reporter
jennifer@waimeaweekly.co.nz
There are no teenage sleep-ins for Kellyanne Urquhart. She’s up early every day to fit everything into her day, and it’s worth it. Surrounded by friends, and watched on Zoom by family, she was awarded Garin College’s dux for 2021. Kellyanne says she didn’t do a lot in Years 9 and 10 but took up netball in Year 11. Realising she had had lots of fun playing, she thought she should do more with her days and
now she loves to keep busy. She was house captain for Garin’s Aubert House, played touch and netball for Garin and went to the national Shakespeare finals. Now she’s working three jobs over the

holidays to save for university. Her family didn’t see the kitchen table for weeks but didn’t mind because they saw Kellyanne studying hard. “I don’t like being locked away in my room,” Kellyanne says. “I need a bit of noise to study.” She was awarded distinction in English, Media Studies, Drama, Statistics and Religious Education. Despite biology being the only subject she didn’t receive distinction in, she is planning to study for a Bachelor of Environmental Science at the University of Canterbury. She doesn’t know where her degree will take her but says she wants to do something good for the planet. “I remember watching David Attenborough as a child and learning about caring for our environment,” says Kellyanne. “I want to help out and do my bit.”

Tākaka Hill road: two lanes restored for Christmas
The Tākaka Hill road will be fully open in time for Christmas and the busy summer holiday period. On Friday 17 December, the traffic light system on the Riwaka side of the hill was switched off and two sealed lanes back in operation after nearly four years of work on this rebuild project, following Cyclone Gita. A long and winding road
Keep left, keep safe
With 15 work sites in total, the first 10 more straightforward sites were tackled in the first two years, with the remaining five more complex and highly engineered work sites with deep retaining walls designed only after geotechnical investigations. They’ve been under construction over the past 18 months.
With multiple bends and no median barriers to safely separate oncoming traffic – we’re asking everyone to take extra special care driving this narrow and windy road and to stay alert and keep left.

Marty Kain’s cricketing career has always been untraditional. With his dream of playing international cricket seemingly over, Marty packed his bags and moved to San Diego in 2017 to take an indefinite break from the game. After getting established in the U.S, Marty did some coaching to support him and his wife while she studied. An hour a week slowly snowballed into a full-time career and eventually saw Marty pulling the pads back on. With the pressure off, Marty began to enjoy his cricket more than he had in a long time and it showed in his performances. This would not go unnoticed by national selectors and now at 33-years-old, Marty will make his international debut for his adopted country tomorrow night. The U.S will take on Ireland in
three ODIs and two T20Is this month, the first time the states has played host to a top tier nation. “It is pretty random, but something I have always wanted to do, so, after a long time, it will be pretty awesome.”
He says after first moving to San Diego he had no intention of playing the game he had spent the past 20 years dedicated to. “I didn’t plan to have anything to do with cricket.” However, he was finally “roped back in”.
“I was like ‘sure, let’s give this a whirl,’ and before I knew it was back to being fully competitive.” Marty says it is a huge occasion for USA cricket. “Ireland is a proper team, so this is a really good step in the right direction.”
He says his side will be no pushovers. “These guys are no joke and certainly have skills. If they perform to their ability, we can compete.” The former Central Districts allrounder says cricket in the United States is played on everything from concrete pitches to outfields that are too long for sheep to graze on. “You need to keep an open mind and be prepared to play on all sorts of wickets.” However, though they may lack the resources, the passion for the game is on par with any country in the world. “It is next level, these guys just genuinely love cricket and play with no excuses.” It hasn’t been an easy journey for Marty, who arrived in California with no money or experience with the culture. “Trying to restart life was not easy, it is a bit of a rat race and I got kicked to the curb a few times, so to overcome it all was pretty rewarding.”

Errol’s decades of dedication Jonty Dine Reporter
jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz
A gruesome injury dramatically changed the course of Errol Beattie’s rugby career. Errol was chasing a kick at Trafalgar Park when the ball suddenly took an unexpected turn, resulting in a snapped Achilles tendon. “They heard it in the grandstand.” Resigned to the sidelines, Errol wanted to remain in the game he loved so took up coaching. Beginning as a junior at the STAR club, Errol has been involved in rugby for several decades. He coached Nelson Bays Senior B rugby side and was president of the Stoke Club from 1984-1985, becoming a life member in 1986. The 77-year-old was also instrumental in the formation of the Tasman Mako in 2006. Errol’s talents were not confined to the rugby field, as he was also an accomplished cricket coach and player, basketballer, and track and field athlete. He was the first Waimea College student to represent the school in four different sports, a record which stood for 20 years. After leaving college, he was forced to narrow his sporting involvements so focussed on rugby and cricket. He represented Nelson Bays in both sports before his promising career was cruelly cut short.
Unfortunately, the snapped Achilles which ended his playing days is not the only injury setback Errol has suffered. A work accident in 1977 saw him break five ribs, his collar bone, and puncture a lung. This put him out of coaching action for over a year, but he made a full recovery and return. As a child, he also contracted polio in 1950, leaving him with one leg shorter than the other. His foot also began to curve inward, requiring a procedure to straighten it. “When I was young and mobile, I just kept going.” The wear and tear have left lingering effects but so too has Errol’s influence on Nelson rugby. In 1996, Errol was made a life member of the Nelson Bays Rugby Union and in 2005 was made a life member of the Tasman Rugby Union. His tireless efforts led to the construction of the Stoke clubrooms, a project which Errol personally contributed almost half of the 6000 volunteer hours. “I am quite proud because it put the club in a strong position.” Another highlight of his career saw Errol travelling to Hawaii to run golden oldies tournaments. He was also awarded the Rata Foundation Lifetime Contribution to Sport at the 2021 ASB Nelson Sports Awards. “When you take on administration you have to work 110 per cent, you have to go that extra
