The long, arduous process that has been the Bateup Road upgrade finally looks to be reaching its end. Work on sealing the Bateup road upgrade has now begun, as the project now enters its final stages. The project began in April last year and was initially expected to be completed by early 2019. However, several factors meant that the project was further delayed. Lack of water during the drought and high fire risk were two of the reasons that the project was delayed in February this year, with a council spokesperson saying that “work was suspended on site at Bateup Rd while equipment and staff were diverted to help with the Pigeon Valley firefighting effort.” Civil Defence also issued a notice for contractors to stop work where machinery would be at risk of starting a fire if there is was no access to a high-pressure water system nearby. The project was also extended due to additional work that was added at the beginning of this year. Tasman District Council community relations manager Chris Choat says “We decided to add some work that

Former students and teachers of Dovedale School were excited to celebrate the school’s 150th anniversary, over a weekend reunion on May 17-18. Former students travelled from all across the country and even from Australia to attend the ceremonies, which saw performances from current students, the cutting of a cake, social events and a memorial plaque. Above, four of the school’s newest students are getting ready to join a school with a rich, long history. Moss Barrett, 5, Kingston White, 5, Julia van Reenen, 4 and Kaitlyn Pickwell, 4. Moss and Kingston are new students, with Julia and Kaitlyn to join the school as its newest members when they turn 5. The reunion saw not only the schools youngest students celebrating, but its oldest ones, too. Two students who attended the school during the 1930’s, were there to cut the Full SToRy PAge 4 cake. “When I was at school I just wanted to explore the wider world beyond Nelson. To get out and see the rest of the world, I think a lot of people from Nelson had a similar goal. I went to Hampden Street School.”
“I wanted to be a fashion designer when I was younger. I loved textiles and I was a keen sewer when I was younger, it was a good hobby.”
“I went to Richmond Primary School, and then I was one of the first year pupils at Waimea College. When I was in school I wanted to be a nurse, and that’s what I ended up doing.”
“I went to school in Scotland, in a town called Eyemouth. When I was a kid I wanted to be a digger driver. Haven’t made it to that one yet, but you never know. I think maybe you can rent them now.
Car takes out power pole in Appleby It was reported that a vehicle hit a power pole late on Monday afternoon in Appleby. The vehicle took out a power pole on Blackbyre Road, in Appleby just off the Appleby Highway, at 4:20pm on Monday, May 20. A police spokesperson said that police attended the scene where a car collided with a power pole. It is reported that the driver came off the road, hitting the power pole and bringing it down. Police say that while the car took the pole down, the driver was not injured. However, the road was blocked off due to the accident. The accident meant that power was out for several properties nearby, on Appleby highway and several connecting roads.
Bateup Road upgrade nears end FROM PAGE 1 was going to have to be done later on to cope with the new growth in the area, essentially on the Paton’s Rise subdivision. Power and telecommunications were the two big ones that we needed to add, as doing it now will save time and money in the long run.” The Bateup road upgrade is now expected to finish midearly June, with Chris explaining the kerb and channel was in the final stages of being laid along the new shared pathway, and that several entrances to the street needed to be finished. “We’ve sealed one section of the road, now we just have to finish the kerb and channelling on the Richmond side, because of the new shared pathway.”
The $4 millon Bateup road upgrade is nearly good to go. After several delays the road is finally being sealed, and is now set to be completed early June. Photo: Matt McCrorie. The four-million-dollar upgrade was undertaken to cope with the growth and new developments in Richmond South. The road is being widened to
allow for a greater flow of traffic, adding a shared walkway/ cycleway, and replacing roadside drains with underground pipes. Several new underground stormwater chambers
ginning
have been installed. “As Richmond is growing we need to be prepared for the future, and make sure we can support all the new developments going in.”

$500,000 fire fund ‘fizzles’ out Charles Anderson A Government programme announced in February to use jobless people to help clean up after the Nelson and Tasman fires has been labelled a “farce and a fizzer” by Nelson MP Nick Smith. The $500,000 grant and programme was designed to provide 10,000 hours of support for fire clean-up work in the wake of the Tasman fires. The programme was approved by cabinet on February 18 and announced by Social Development Minister Carmel Sepuloni. Nick says it was championed as generous Government assistance for the fires by the Prime Minister and the Ministers of Internal Affairs, Civil Defence and Primary Industries. “It turns out that not one dollar was spent and not one hour of work was done.” The scheme was quietly shut down on 7 May. “This fire fund for Nelson and Tasman has been a complete fizzer. It was designed to make the Government look good but was impractical and unworkable. It is like so many programmes of the Government, whether it be Kiwibuild or Zero Student Fees, where much was promised but little delivered. Nick says that the Government

Prime Minister Jacinda Arden visits the Civil Defence headqauters in Richmond during the fires. Photo: Supplied was told in February that the fund was not likely needed. Nelson has only 4 percent unemployment and autumn was the peak of the apple and kiwifruit harvest so there would be very few appropriately-skilled people on benefits to rebuild driveways and fences and to restore pasture and landscaping. “It was foolish of the Government to continue with the scheme when property owners, council and myself told them it would not work.” Nick says the Government would have been better to commit this $500,000 directly into fixing the damage Fire and Emergency NZ did to create firebreaks to contain the fire. “This work was absolutely required but it has been unfair on property owners, leaving them at the mercy of the May-
oral Relief Fund and private donations for these repairs. “The Government has dismissed calls to fund these property repairs required by the damage caused by the fire breaks on the basis of this $500,000 Taskforce Green Scheme being available. They need to reconsider now it has been withdrawn. Nick says Fire and Emergency NZ and the Nelson Tasman Civil Defence team did a good job of managing the extraordinary emergency and says he acknowledges the Government contributions to the Mayoral Relief Fund. “However, this $500,000 grant and scheme for Taskforce Green was an impractical response to the fire emergency. The Government needs to listen better in emergencies to the views from locals.”

Oldest students go back to school Matt McCrorie Reporter
matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Two of Dovedale schools’ oldest pupils went back to school last weekend, to attend the Dovedale School’s 150th anniversary celebrations. Shirley Harper and Basil Thompson went back to school, where they were pupils in the late 1930’s, and were even there to cut the cake. The school was first established in 1869. Originally classes were held in the nearby church until the school was built in 1880. Students from every era were welcomed back by current students and staff, for a tour of the school and a weekend of reunions and celebrations, as well as an in-depth look at the history of the school. The event was held over two days, beginning on Friday, 17th May with a Tour of the School and a traditional afternoon tea. The Dovedale Church was opened and held a historical display of
cake, and the unveiling of a new plaque. Shirley and Basil took pride of place on the weekend and were given the honour of cutting the cake and unveiling the plaque to commemorate the occasion. The ceremony closed with the release of a flock of homing pigeons, to signify the school’s motto of “flying together.” The current pupils of Dovedale School put on a performance, and principal Sonia Gianelly said “it brought a tear or two to many past students’ eyes to see the joy and pride on the children’s faces.” The day concluded with decade photographs, an old school cricket match and a ’Dine and Dance’ at the Moutere Hills Community Centre. Well over 200 people from all over New Zealand, and as far as Australia, travelled back to Dovedale to take part in Shirley Harper and Basil Thompson, who are the oldest living former pupils from Dovedale School, the reunion which was originally planned for earlier but postponed cutting the cakes to commemorate 150 years. Monks to visit upper moutere A weeks’ worth of activities will celebrate 20 years of the Chandrakirti Meditation Centre in Upper Moutere. The Centre is hosting visiting monks for a week of prayer and the creation of a traditional mandala sculpture. Chandrakirti Director Phillipa Rutherford explains, “The monks construct the mandala out of coloured sand over a period of a week and once finished the whole thing is dissolved and put into the ocean as a blessing and sign of impermanence.” “It’s an incredible art work and

Good policy is my passion in politics. I tire of the focus on trivia, on personalities, and spin. This is why I am so enthusiastic about my job in National as Caucus Policy Chair, leading policy development. Each weekend this month I have been at party conferences in Invercargill, the Hutt Valley, and Paihia in Northland doing the work on our plans for New Zealand’s future. I would of course much prefer to be in Government, but Opposition has one advantage. The role as a Minister is so pressured that the day to day work gives little opportunity to get out and engage with New Zealanders and think long term about the future direction of
our country. I am enjoying talking to thousands of New Zealanders about the changes needed for our country to do better. National has learnt from Labour’s failure to do this work in Opposition. In their first year they passed more National Bills through Parliament than from their own Labour or support parties. A major weakness of this Government was the lack of a detailed plan. They have had to form over 200 working groups costing tax payers over $500m to try and backfill the hole. Time and money have been wasted such as the $10m spend on Michael Cullen and co on the Capital Gains Tax Review Group that
has now been dropped. The same thing has happened with the Welfare Advisory Group report where only 1% of the recommended changes have been implemented. Labour’s few policies like Kiwibuild were never properly thought through. The original promise of 100,000 homes costing only $300,000 sounded great. But far from the 1,000 promised in the first year they have built only 80 in 18 months. Most were already being built and the average price has been $540,000. The idea that the Government could build houses faster and cheaper than private building companies was always going to fail.
thought to bring harmony and healing to the environment and to those who view the mandala.” The centre has twice hosted His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Nelson, in 1996 and again in 2002 when he visited the centre and opened and named the then- new meditation hall. “We have 13 monks coming from all over New Zealand to join the festivities, this in itself is a milestone,” says Phillipa. The formal ceremony at 2pm Friday May 24th will be attended by a number of interfaith groups.

National’s policy development has been programmed over three years. The first year in 2018 focussed on listening, 2019 is focussed on detailed discussion and 2020 on proposing and promoting policies. Last year we engaged with thousands of New Zealanders covering small businesses, families, seniors, rural communities and young people. A clear message was concern over the cost of living, particularly with respect to fuel, rent, rates and insurance. We were surprised to find that people rated positively the services of IRD. GPs and Early Childhood Centres were praised. People were
very critical of Immigration NZ and Councils. We are developing policies to address these problems. National is publishing a series of Discussion Documents on the big issues. Our Environment Paper was published in February and on International Relations this week. Further papers will be produced on primary industry, the economy, infrastructure, education, health and social services. I invite Nelsonians to get a copy of these from my office, caravan or our website and give me feedback. This is an opportunity to have your say on the future of our community and country. Advt.

Funding for Laser Mapping Tasman District Council is part of the successful regional bid to the Provincial Growth Fund, enabling the council to complete a LiDAR view of the entire district. The council was one of eight councils that sought the funding for the project, which will complete an aerial capture of data started over 10 years ago. Taken from the air, LiDAR, Light Detection and Ranging, uses a near-infrared laser to map the land, providing a better view and perspective of terrain used for maps by the council, developers and local sports groups. “LiDAR, while not very well known, is an essential element within planning, managing and delivering for the current and future decisions regarding the district’s natural environment, says Tasman Mayor Richard Kempthorne. Richard says “We use it for a multitude of purposes; analytical, such as hazard management or slope analysis, assisting developers and infrastructure managers with accurate terrain models, or providing primary producers with base layers for irrigation planning or forestry harvest optimisation. Currently, only 30% of the Tasman District is captured by LiDAR. Due to the costs involved, the council has for the last 10 years centred around infrastructure (townships), coastal hazard management, and major river management. More recently this was expanded to include hazards such as fault lines – Tsunami risk has also been defined using LiDAR.

Petition declares: ‘ratepayers need to have a say’ Matt McCrorie Two local women are leading the charge for people to have a voice in the way we elect our local leaders, and their petition has gained some momentum. The petition, which has gained 2430 signatures, asks the council to add a poll to the next Local Body election where ratepayers can decide which voting system they want to use to elect the council: first past the post, which is the current system, or the single transferable vote system. The outcome of the petition would not come into effect until 2022. Liz Thomas and Penny Griffith are the organisers of the campaign, which began in 2018 after the 2017 local body elections. In 2017 the council voted to continue with the First Past the Post system, rather than looking at changing the system. Liz believes that, at its core, the idea behind the petition isn’t necessarily just to change the system, but that “people need to make the choice for themselves. Under the local government act, ratepayers can demand a poll.” Ultimately, Liz says that “we want ratepayers to have a say in what voting system they have, not the council telling people what vot-
ing system they should have. In some ways it can look like there is a group of people telling us that they’re quite happy to continue with the same system that got them elected in the first place. It’s about people having the choice rather than the council.” When Liz and Penny initially decided to create the petition, it was early 2018 and they didn’t make it to the February deadline. “We sat back for a bit, and had a think. We came up with the idea that we could time it to coincide with the local body election.” Considering the cost to the ratepayers was a big part of this decision. Adding the poll to the local body election only comes at a cost of $8000, compared to the $80,000 it would cost to hold the poll at any other time. Liz says “Not all voting systems are created equal.” The Tasman District Council currently uses the First Past the Post system (FPP) which sees the candidate with the majority of votes win the race. However Liz explains that the Single Transferable Vote system, (STV) is more proportional. For example, there might be 3 candidates standing for mayor. Candidate A gets 38 per cent of the vote, while candidate B gets 32 per cent, with C only gaining
Liz Thomas is one of the two ladies leading the charge for the petition to add a poll to the next local body election, which will see ratepayers decide how they want to vote in future elections. 30 per cent. While candidate A slightly more of the vote, they get will win under the existing FPP elected.” system, Liz explains that “More An STV system gives voters the than half the people didn’t want opportunity to rank the candithat person - but because they got dates based on preference.
1,0
Several councils throughout New Zealand already use an STV, including Wellington City Council, where Liz previously served as a councillor. The District Health Board elections also use the ST system, which Liz says caused some confusion and invalid votes during the last election. “On one form, you voted with First Past the Post, and on the other form it was Single Transferable Vote. There were over 1000 informal votes because people voted for their health board by ticking the candidate they wanted rather than ranking them.” The petition was presented to council last week, and now the electoral commision will be checking the petition against the electoral roll to ensure that it is valid. “We got more signatures than we needed, we wanted a buffer of about 400, just in case.” “If it is valid, we have a big job to do working on educating people about their upcoming choice, so that people can make an informed decision about how they want to be represented. “As citizens we have rights, but those rights also come with responsibilities. I believe that ensuring we have the ability to choose a fair, proportional voting system, is one of those responsibilities.”

Mike’s milestone in the middle Jonty Dine
The respect rugby referee Mike Lash garners on the footy field was on full display during his 100th first class fixture on Saturday. Following a Waimea try, Nelson star Willy Havili kicked the ball away in frustration. Mike simply said: “Go get it, Willy.” Then, without hesitation, the young first five ran 30 metres to retrieve the ball. The 31-year-old whistleblower marked the significant milestone in his career at the weekend as Waimea and Nelson played out a thrilling draw. “I’ve refereed these two teams a lot and they have had some tough battles, so it’s great to be involved in another one today,” Mike said after the game. Refereeing 100 first class games is something Mike has grinded away at for a while to achieve. “It’s been a long journey. I’ve been all around the world and country, so to bring up this personal milestone is quite special.” Mike says he still remembers his first premier match 13 years ago like it was yesterday. “Huia against Stoke in Motueka, they didn’t know it was my first till afterwards. I just kept it quiet and got a few accolades
afterwards which was nice.” Injuries ruled Mike out of playing the game after suffering multiple concussions in college. However, his desire to remain in the game he loved led him to picking up the whistle. Having qualified as a pilot, he headed to Southland for work and quickly made the senior referee panel and eventually officiated 44 senior fixtures. Mike was also selected to join the NZ Rugby referees’ panel and was given three junior international appointments, a Ranfurly Shield challenge and Mitre10 Cup games. “NPC was always a goal of mine and an amazing experience.” He says every game has its own special moments but a Tasman Trophy final between Nelson and Waimea stands out. “We went 100 minutes, including time, so that really tested the legs, lungs and mind.” Mike says his style has developed over a century of matches. “For a long time I tried to be like other referees, it took me a bit of time to realise that I just had to be me and bring me to the game, and when that fell into place I started reaping benefits from it.” He says there are particular

players who are harder to handle - his younger brother James among the chief culprits. “We are very close, and we challenge each other on the rugby field, he knows he’s not going to get it easy.” Mike says there are a “fair few local legends round the show” who have provided him a challenge, but says that’s what you need as a referee. “They make me earn my keep.” Mike says he may look to hang up the whistle and get into referee coaching as he wants to give back to the game as much as he can for as long as he can. He says the highlight over his tenure is the friends he’s made. “A lot of these guys are good mates and for them to see past the jersey is probably the biggest reward, on the field I’m the ref and we have that mutual respect, off it we can have a beer and a laugh.” This was epitomized following Saturday’s game as both sides gave a special cheer to “Lashy” Tasman Rugby referee Mike Lash during his 100th fixture on Saturday. before shaking hands. Prior to the pleasantries how- Photo: Barry Whitnall/Shuttersport. ever, the two old rivals went to war at Neale Park, ending in stalemate. The defending champions Nelson and unbeaten Waimea could not be separated after the exhausting encounter which ended 22-all.

Partcipants line up for winter run Once again, in just under a month’s time, nervous participants will line up for the 6th annual Monaco/Nelson Mid Winter marathon. Last year saw 70 participants complete the full marathon distance of 42 km, with some 22 competitors completing the marathon distance for their first time. With last year’s first timers ranging in age from millennials to super annuitants, the allure of being able to say “I’ve ran a marathon” remains strong in the Nelson/Tasman area! The 2018 event attracted around 300 participants across its various categories, with a great many runners and walkers coming from out of town. The Mid Winter Marathon’s quirkiness is a key part in attracting participants from far and wide and has become fixed firmly on the schedule of many talented itinerant marathon runners’ annual schedule. The relaxed at-
mosphere, entry by donation to charity, and the huge array of spot prizes (that participants donate as part of their entry) have helped to maintain the event’s popularity! The Mid Winter Marathon is a unique, local event in that entry is essentially free (by donation to charity) and everyone goes home with a prize, as all participants are asked to donate a small prize for the ‘after event’ spot prize draw. Along with its quirkiness comes a stunning course which is run 95% off- road on trails beside the estuary. The event is centred around The Honest Lawyer Country Pub in Monaco, where participants start and finish. The course involves runners/ walkers heading from The Honest Lawyer to Rabbit Island beachfront, and back, along the Great Taste Trail cycleway. Options available to entrants are to run/ or walk the full marathon

For those with less confidence there is also a 6 person relay walk/run event that forms a part of the event.
Super ruGBY TippinG
First time marathoners are particularly welcome, with those completing the distance for the first time being rewarded with a special commemorative medal at the finish. The medals are now becoming a collectors’ item. Runners and walkers of all abilities are invited to come along and challenge themselves in a relaxed event.
The emphasis of the event is on the personal, rather than the competitive challenge, with the marathon aiming to be low key and low cost but lots of fun. Last year’s marathon winner, Ben Wallbank, returns after a solid year of training, and is well primed to break the 3 hour mark. The current female race record holder, Colette Read, is running well and will be back to have a go at reducing her record time. Several entrants also race walk the whole marathon distance and with 8 walkers last year the competition in this section is certainly heating up. On Sunday, June 23, walkers and 4hr plus marathoners, will start at 8 a.m, with all other runners and the 6 person relay starting at 9 a.m. The first finishers will arrive back at The Honest Lawyer around 11.30 a.m. with everyone expected to be finished by 3 p.m. Anyone interested in knowing more about the event is advised to view the Marathon’s web page at monacomarathon.co.nz or email Stu Cottam at info@monacomarathon.co.nz

Richmond AFC clash ‘didn’t disappoint’ last Saturday v
The young Fresh Choice Richmond 1st XI football team had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Tahuna, on Saturday. The clash had everything to be a classic game of football and it didn’t disappoint the good-sized crowd. Tahuna scored early from a very tight angle, however after that, Richmond dominated most parts of the game and just before halftime Joseph Rozga found the back of the net from the edge of the box with a dipping and swerving ball that the Tahuna keeper could do nothing about. Coach Clay Wilhelmus, although thinking they could have stolen the win, was really happy the way his young side battled and competed against a much older and experienced Tahuna team. In the afternoon senior matches Richmond recorded five wins, three losses and a draw. The Fresh Choice Richmond 2nd team lost 4-1 to a well-drilled Wakefield side, however the Hornbills 2nds beat their Nelson Suburbs opponents 3-1. The Global Wings Travel Hornbills 3rd team had a 2-0 win over FC Nelson, and the Thompson Daly Chartered Accountants
Richmond Thistle team currently sit top of Division 3 after securing a hard fought 3-2 win over a stubborn Nelson Suburbs team. Suburbs, who had dominated the first half, went into the break 2-1 up, however Thistle scored twice through penalties from Hung Pham (who also scored in general play) and Lee Merrion. Thistle are very much a talent developing feeder team giving younger players the chance to get a taste of senior football, supported by experienced team mates made up from all age groups. The 4th Division Sprig and Fern Richmond Stags played a local club derby against the Tasman Auto Electrics Richmond Bogans, with the Stags taking the game 3-2. The Hothouse Richmond Foxes had another comfortable win, this time over FC Nelson, which puts them in top spot of the women’s 1st division after five games, however the About Beauty at Monaco Richmond Swans were beaten in a penalty shootout by Nelson Suburbs, with regular time finishing 1-1 and Suburbs taking the penalties 4–2. Two of the youth teams had byes last weekend, and the other three had two losses and a win.

Wanderers Sports Club Report Wanderers celebrate action packed Club Day The Taylors Wanderers rugby club had plenty to celebrate during an action-packed Club Day at Brightwater on Saturday. The club had 19 teams across all grades playing at home with plenty of volunteer support ensuring the day went smoothly. The early games began at 9.30am with the three under-6 teams, Stripes, Blue and Gold, all setting the standard for the day with some entertaining play and total commitment, positively encouraged by those watching on the sidelines. Player Acknowledged Games were shared between Centennial Park and Lord Rutherford which did tend to split the crowd a little, but a general prize-giving was held at the Clubrooms before the division two game against Nelson. The following players were all acknowledged for their outstanding performances: U6 Blue: Cairan Morrison, Player of Day; U6 Gold – Taylor Martin Player of Day: Mac Rawson for Effort; U8 Blue: Jossi Weir PoD, Nate Stratford for Tackling; U9 Gold: Brook Hutchison PoD; U10 Blue: Anthony Bedwell PoD, Cooper Olaman for Hard Running; U10 Gold: Brodie Winn PoD, Carlos Thompson for Tackling; U11 Blue: Lucas Mellon PoD, Tyler Hutchison for Tackling; U12 Blue: Jacob Jarrett Best Back, Aiden Burke Best Forward; U13 Blue: Nath Downie. Senior players were out in force at both Lord Rutherford and Centennial grounds, manning BBQ’s, getting in on the action with the juniors, being involved in half time team talks and really show-
21-19, everyone held their collective breath as the Kahurangi kicker lined up for the winning goal from close range, however it slid by the post and Wanderers held on for a rather fortunate victory in a satisfying sporting conclusion to a great day. Steve Soper was Player of the Day with Tyler Chambers and Will Hamilton standing out for high work rate and Zyon Hola, with his broken field running which resulted in two tries, another to make a mark on the game.
Jayden Roske fights hard during the action packed Wanderers club day at Brightwater last weekend. The club had plenty to celebrate during the day, with 19 teams playing at home. Photo: Supplied ing some support for the coaches and kids! The Women were also amazing, and supported all the Junior Girls, in person! It was fantastic to see their “adopt a junior girl” initiative working so well. We have 230 players across 16 teams and all were playing at home this week. Entertaining Spectacles The afternoon games were all thoroughly entertaining spectacles with the Women playing Waimea Old Boys at Lord Rutherford in front of a good crowd in ideal conditions, and although down at half-time 24 –5 they showed real heart in the
second half to confine the score to 34 – 8 and create a number of scoring opportunities, although unable to fully complete. This team contains a number of players new to rugby, with two new recruits from during the week having their first hit out, and loving it (!!), and coach Ian Biggs continues to be impressed by the growth and improvement of the entire squad each week. The try was scored by Ruth Akavi who was also Player of the Day and Shakia-Lee Biggs added a penalty in the second half. Solid Defence The Div 2 team continued their
unbeaten run in that competition but not without another tight, enthralling contest from Nelson who produced a vastly improved performance from the earlier meeting between the two teams this year. The final score of 3420 probably flattered Wanderers but again confirmed their consistency. Player of the Day, Blair French, was solid on defence and produced strong attacking runs, finishing one of those runs with an excellent five pointer himself. The Division 1 contest between Taylors Wanderers and Kahurangi was an absolute arm wrestle and went down to the final seconds where, with Wanderers leading
Volunteers Thanked Following the games an acknowledgement was made to all Fire Volunteers on behalf of the Wanderers Sports Club in recognition of the excellent duties completed by the numerous volunteers from Brightwater, Wakefield, Appleby and Mapua. In keeping with the Club Day emphasis, the after-match function was especially notable for the awarding of a special tie acknowledging 25 games for the premier team to Jaden Roseke, and 50 game blazers to Will Hamilton and Sean King, again in recognition of division one matches. Captain Fletcher Matthews made the presentation to Will, and Darrin Barr, representing major sponsor Total, made the award to Sean. Principal sponsor Taylors Contracting Ltd chief executive, Charlie Taylor, was on hand to present Ethan Johnson with a commemorative blazer in acknowledgement of his 150th game for the Wanderers club and Lachie Taylor presented Scott Reed with his blazer recognising his service to the club with an excess of 200 games.

Waimea swimmer shines at nationals Jonty Dine Consistently waking up before dawn to hit the pool has paid off for a pair of local swimmers. Bree Anderson and Lilly Hall recently returned from the National Age Group Championships with a haul of medals for the Nelson South Swim Club. The duo took home seven medals between them as well as set new records and personal bests. A technology glitch meant Lilly was unaware she also became the fastest 13-year-old in the country for 200m breaststroke. Lilly says it was an intense fight to the finish and an amazing feeling to get the gold. “The girls swam really well, and we were all holding together. No one knew who was going to win.” The Nelson College for Girls’ student also took home a brace of bronze medals for her efforts in the 50m and 100m breaststroke. Lilly swam personal bests in every race as eyes up nationals later in the year. Bree, 16, also had a memorable outing in Wellington as she bagged three silver medals in the 200, 100 and 50m breaststroke and a bronze in the 400m individual medley. “I usually struggle to make finals and my goal was to make top five.” Those expectations were blown right out of the water as Bree would swim personal best times and set a regional record. “It was pretty unexpected,” she says. Bree credits her recent success to a new coach who worked a lot on her technique. “Glen Findlay has done a lot for my stroke and helped change my mindset to a more positive one.” Bree began swimming competitively six years ago following in the wake of her older brother. “I would always be at his swim competitions and I got bored so decided to join in.” The Waimea College student has a hectic training schedule which sees her up at 5am and straight to the pool. While she says her eleven training sessions per week can be tiring at times, it is winning that drives her. “Sometimes I ask, ‘why am I doing this?’ But in the long run it all pays off.” Bree was pipped in all three races at nationals by Auckland swimming sensation Brearna Crawford who has qualified for junior worlds. “I’ve got a long way to go before I’ll be threatening her.” Her next chance will be at nationals in Auckland this October.

Stoke nudge Richmond F45 It was close game of netball at times, but Stoke managed to come out on top against Richmond F45 46-42 at Saxton Stadium last Thursday night. Richmond F45 took half of the first quarter to settle into the game. However, Stoke were quick to capitalise with an early lead. Defensive duo Marina Hirst Tristram and Maddie
Springer combined well in the circle. Stoke were clinical with court play, banking the first quarter 15-9. Some key changes in the Richmond F45 side were the catalyst for a superb second quarter start. Determined play saw them claw back into the game, with some good combinations forming on attack and into the feeding circle. Stoke
also impressed with WA Abbie Cook pushing her shooters into excellent space. With a half-time score of 24-23 in Richmond F45’s favour, the third quarter saw the real battle commence. Both sides were consistent, however Stoke managed to push out ahead by four points by the end of the third quarter. Stoke soared out of the gates in the final stanza with the
scent of victory looming. A well-timed change saw Cook move into GA, combining with Charlotte Etheridge at GS. A see-saw ensued, both teams battling it out for the upper hand. Richmond will be disappointed that they let this one get away from them, however they did pick up a valuable bonus point for their determination and hard work.

Community Grants applications open
Speed limits – tell us what you think
Are you planning a great community event or project – but need a little help to make it happen? Applications for our Community Grants are open now and close on 31 July 2019. Funding is available for Tasman-based projects that meet a community need and have community support. Priority is given to projects that can show financial support from other sources as well. Online applications Visit tasman.govt.nz/link/grants to download the Community Grants from Rates Application Form. Work on the application at your own pace – and save as you go. Send the completed application back to us using a simple online form. Find out more Email Community Partnerships Coordinator Lani Evans, lani.evans@tasman.govt.nz.
The Government has placed a focus on reducing serious injuries and deaths associated with crashes on our roads, not only by investing in road safety improvements but also by ensuring ‘safe and appropriate’ travel speeds. The ‘safe and appropriate’ speed will vary for different types of roads, depending on their main use and characteristics. The Nelson City and Tasman District councils are reviewing the current speed limits in place across our region. For speed limits to be effective, they need to be underpinned by community support and understanding – so we need your feedback. Fill in the survey

Access to eastern half of Moturoa / Rabbit Island restricted Public access to the eastern half of Moturoa/Rabbit Island will be closed on three days this winter while an organised game bird hunt takes place. The closure includes all the beach front at the eastern end of the island. Fish and Game organise the hunts, which are timed to coincide with low tide to avoid any effect on shore birds. No hunting is allowed within 100 metres of the high tide mark. Closure dates 2019: The hunts will take place between 7.00 am and 3.00 pm on the following dates:
• Saturday 25 May (or Sunday 26 May depending on weather)
HAVE YOUR SAY: Find details for all our current consultations at www.tasman.govt.nz/feedback.
Submissions open: Lease for Wanderers Gymnasium Brightwater Recreation Reserve Submissions close on 18 June 2019. We intend to grant a new five-year lease to the Wanderers Sport Club for their Wanderers Gymnasium, located in the former Bowling Club building on Brightwater Recreation Reserve – 10 Charlotte Lane, Brightwater. While this is not a new occupation or activity, the Wanderers Gymnasium group plan to start using the entire building during this new lease. This would expand the work-out space and activities available within the building. They may also create a multi-use outdoor sports court within the new five-year lease period. You’re invited to make a submission on the lease and the potential expanded use of this Council building and public land. We are obliged to publish a public notice for leases that are not covered by an existing reserve management plan. Have your say: To submit feedback, email info@tasman.govt.nz with the subject line: Wanderers Gymnasium Brightwater Recreation Reserve. You may post hard-copy submissions to Margot Wilson, Tasman District Council, Private Bag 4, Richmond 7050. If any objections are received, we will hold a formal hearing. Please advise whether you would like to appear if there is a hearing. All feedback becomes public information. Find out more Contact Margot Wilson on 03 543 8400.
Alcohol licence applications Current applications for alcohol licences, including information on how to object, are advertised on our website.

If you know of individuals or groups that you think deserve recognition for all their hard work, you can nominate them for an Outstanding Community Service Award. Without fuss or fanfare, these are the people who undertake good work on behalf of neighbours, friends, schools, clubs, churches and service organisations, and make our community an awesome place to live. The Outstanding Community Service Awards allow us to formally acknowledge individuals who have volunteered on behalf of their communities for 20 years or more. Nominees must be residents of Tasman District. Find out more: Nomination forms and criteria are available at tasman.govt.nz/link/outstanding. Nominations close on 30 June 2019.
