Residents What a catch! could buy the village
A deal to buy Waimea Village from current owners Michael and Carolyn Wright has been proposed as court action looms in the bitter dispute between residents of the village and the Wrights. Tasman District councillor Kit Maling has been working with residents at Richmond’s Waimea Village in their dispute over lease fee increases over the past two years. He says residents need to start thinking long term, and buying the village from the Wrights is one way to secure their future without having to worry about massive annual lease increases. He says he has been in contact with representatives of the Wrights over a proposed deal but hasn’t had an answer as yet. The proposal comes hot on the heels of the latest special meeting hosted by the residents committee at the village on Sunday, where its chairman Jerry Row-
land confirmed a court date for their case against the Wrights. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for February 13 as the residents attempt to get a repair and replacement fund put into a trust, as they fear the money stipulated for repairs and replacement is not being used as it should. The separate fund was ordered by the arbitrator in the last round of lease disputes last year. Jerry told the packed village hall, with some having to stand outside the doors, that their lawyer Warwick Heal was confident of success. In an interesting twist, the two sides will meet this week to discuss the dispute. But residents at the meeting were clear in their opposition to any deal being struck with one resident saying he doesn’t trust Michael Wright to act in good faith. But the major issue of the day SEE PAGE 5

Fishers big and small, from the seasoned to the young took part in the McCashin’s Motueka RSA fishing competition over the weekend, weighing in huge kingfish, scallops, crayfish and spotties. The annual fishing competition is in it’s 13th year and saw over 230 entries, from all over the Nelson, Tasman and Golden Bay region. Motueka RSA Fishing Club president Murray Hyde says some great weather over the weekend contributed to the competition’s success, with a lot of people checking the forecast during the week before entering. “The great weather played a big part over the weekend. But even when it’s not so good, people still seem to show up to weigh in.” Mark Nicholls and his 6.6kg snapper won the heaviest snapper category and a huge kingfish caught by Jason Manson of Motueka weighing in at 20kg was the heaviest of the day. Justin Scott caught the heaviest kahawai at 2.26kg and the winner of new category ‘the big three’ Mark Williams took home $500 worth of Richmond Mall vouchers with his 1.78kg snapper, 0.64kg gurnard and 2.04kg kahawai. Rowan Young took out the heaviest crayfish with a 4.22kg whopper caught from the Abel Tasman and Murray says while it was a standout there were a lot of crayfish and some top contenders for the prize, with entrant Wylie Williams donating six crayfish to the fish auction which sees all proceeds go to Nelson Marine Radio.

Close to record crowd for Richmond Rodeo

Richmond Rodeo organisers are praising another top crowd, saying it went close to beating previous attendance records. Secretary Tina Angus-Phyn says the official number of tickets sold were yet to be counted, but feedback from the cowboys was very positive. “They said what a cool crowd Richmond was, they get involved, they just loved it,” says Tina. “From that aspect it was probably a better crowd than ever before.” Tina admits seeing the spills is often a crowd favourite as dozens of the country’s top cowboys put their bodies on the line atop of some of the most bucking broncos and bulls around. “They want to see the action and see people live their dreams. Who wants to jump off a horse and wrestle a steer? It’s just amazing,” says the barrel racer.
She acknowledged that because the event was only held once a year, it still had a certain novelty. There were more than 50 kids that wanted to take part in the junior calf ride, but with a limit of only 15, numbers were confirmed early in the day. “So many kids want to give it a go. Even my son wanted to put in five dollars and do it.” Cowboys compete all across the country, hoping to collect prize money and points that earn them qualifying spots at the national final in Wanganui. Tina says while the national final is held at a different venue each year, Richmond had not formally put in a bid to host it yet. “Crikey, that would be big. Is Nelson big enough to host the national final with the top competitors? It might be something down the track.”

Fire guts Moutere esteryear Y community centre Show Nelson Vintage Engine & Machinery Club
Saturday & Sunday - 2 & 3 February 2013 9.00am - 4.00pm Higgins Park, Pigeon Valley, Wakefield
Phillip Rollo A host of community and public events are now up in the air after the Moutere Hills Community Centre caught fire on Tuesday morning, with its function room being the worst hit. Upper Moutere chief fire officer Fred Ewers says it is too early to know whether the fire was suspicious, although he thought that would be highly unlikely. Tasman District councillor Judene Edgar, who was involved in the fundraising process for the facility when it first opened in 2005, says once the fire investigation was complete, the attention would turn to finding new locations for events such as the international wine symposium, weddings and an upcoming family reunion. The Sarau Festival will still go ahead, she says, and the holiday programme based at the facility would be relocated to the school. Judene says the community centre was likely to be out of use for the next few months. “This building really has been the hub of the community. The community has got heart to it and I think that’s what this facility has helped create. Yes it’s the home of Rangers Rugby Club but they have Spanish lessons, play groups, just such an amazing variety of things here.” The fire was discovered by holiday programme coordinator Yvette Waston-Cook, who heard a loud bang coming from the roof when she was turning the lights on in the gym with her two children. “The lights started flickering and this banging noise like someone was stomping on the roof,”

As I was running out of the building the ceiling collapsed right behind me on fire,” says Yvette. Judene says the insurance company will do its assessment following the fire brigade’s full investigation.

Firmer line to be taken on safety
Authorities will take tougher measures to prevent further quad bike accidents on farms despite last year’s statistics being “around the average.” The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment has indicated that it will take a firmer line on safety breaches during its current nationwide safety campaign, where spot checks are Shane Harris of Harris Training says there has been a number of near miss- made to hundreds of farms across the country, es in Nelson during the past. Photo: Phillip Rollo. because all work place accidents are “concerning” and the figures are still too high compared to that of other farm vehicles nationally. Its decision comes in the wake of numerous quad bike accidents across the country during the summer period, with the latest occurring last week when a 23 year old Rai Valley man was flown to Nelson Hospital after it was believed he crashed into a ditch. Last week Waimea Weekly spoke with two local authorities who agreed that common sense and wearing a helmet would help prevent accidents. This week Shane Harris, of Hope-based Harris Training, says there had been numerous near misses across the district and recommended that quad bike users speak to retailers and do “refresher” courses to improve their skills and knowledge. But Ona De Rooy, the MBIE’s general manager for health and safety operations, believes there is a disproportionate number of serious farm and fatal accidents taking place, which is why
quad bikes have become the focus for the ministry. MBIE’s statistics for 2012 were yet to be finalised although Ona believed the number of accidents and fatalities would be around the average of five deaths and 850 accidents involving quad bike use on farms. Ona says there is often an increase in the number of accidents on farms during summer because of the increased hours. The ministry has a quad bike safety campaign under way which aims to reduce the number of people being hurt and killed by quad bikes on farms. As part of the campaign, health and safety inspectors visit farms across the country to check farmers are using quad bikes safely. “There are four key safety steps that farmers and anyone riding a quad bike needs to focus on; always wear a helmet; ensure the rider is experienced enough for the job; choose the right vehicle; and never let kids ride adult quad bikes.” The ministry’s quad bike safety campaign started in 2011 and its inspectors have been taking an education and engagement approach up until this point. This year the focus will shift to enforcement with inspectors taking a firmer line on safety breaches. During the spot checks some safety issues have been found with 642 improvement notices and written warnings being issued between July 2011 and December 2012. The inspectors have found “generally good levels of compliance” with the safety steps during followup visits.

Residents could buy the village FROM PAGE 1 was the lease increase. An arbitrator last year awarded an increase to the Wrights from $125 to $182.76 per month, but many of the residents have yet to pay and the 60 days grace they are legally entitled to will end on January 29. Some residents say debt recovery firm Baycorp has been in touch asking for them to pay up, but Jerry says until they get proof that a separate bank account has been set up for the repair and replacement fund, residents are not obliged to pay. Michael told Waimea Weekly Baycorp was the first step in recovering owed money, when asked what will happen to those who have not paid after January 29 he replied: “It’s clear in the lease what will happen.” He would not elaborate but the lease states if lease fees are 60 days overdue then the lease will “cease” and be forfeited. Residents own their own homes and pay council rates and other bills on top of their monthly lease fees. Michael says the separate account for a repair and replacement fund has “definitely” been set up, but was unwilling to provide any proof. He says that another review – and possibly another increase – would be ready “in the near future”. “Obviously we have a lot of other issues we’re dealing with at this point in time but we are dealing with that one as well so that will be forthcoming.” He refused to say if that would include another increase.

More than just a wool shed
Phillip Rollo
After half an hour of circling her childhood home for the first time in at least 20 years, Barbara Harford finally admitted that it still had some character. But the Atawhai resident still prefers to think of the happy memories growing up in it, labelling its current state as “sad”. The house in question has been a run down, abandoned wool shed for some time now. It is situated on the Appleby Straight and was bought by the Harford family in 1919 as part of a 175 acre block. Its “character” has made it one of the most photographed buildings in the entire region. Last week Waimea Weekly spoke with its owner Robert Morrison, who bought the property for horticultural and agricultural purposes. It is currently leased out to SnapFresh, although the house still stands. Robert said unless there was some sort of commercial viability then one day it would come down and there are no arguments coming from Barbara. “To me it’s not pretty. It was a wonderful home and now it’s a wreck so why would I?” she says. “I find it quite sad really.” Barbara, who lived in the house with her parents Arthur and Alice and brother Da-
vid from the 1930s to the 60s, is also be- and spoke to a “Mr Harford” about the his- father pointed it out when I was a child.” mused at why it is so popular for photog- tory of it. “I can relate to the fact I wouldn’t Val says it was sad to hear that the house like having people come park on my front might be pulled down at some stage in the raphers. “If it was me and I had my photo taken lawn and take photos and I asked his per- future. here then I’d think of the happy days and mission to take some,” says Val. “I think “It’s been there for so many years, it’s althe happy memories but people off the of it every time I drive past, ever since my most a historical place.” road don’t know any of that so why do they come? I can’t understand it.” Barbara knew the home was in a poor state since it had been used as a wool shed, so was not surprised by its condition when looking around on Monday. Waimea Weekly has fielded numerous calls from locals interested in the home and one of those, Val Evans of Stoke, says her grandparents, Alfred and Sarah Silcock, lived in it for a short time as they hoped to farm there in the early 1900s. When Val’s grand mother lost her voice, the doctor recommended she headed for higher ground and the house was sold. She had known all along that the Appleby home was where her grand parents came to from Reefton and one day stopped off Barbara Harford stands outside the house she grew up in, which is widely considered the most photographed house in Nelson. Moutere family to host reunion A family with strong connections to the Upper Moutere area will host a large reunion in March with more than 150 people expected to be here for it. The Hans Eggers family reunion will be held on March 2 and 3, bringing together family from all over the globe. Because Hans Eggers, an early German settler, had 19 children, there has been always been a high number of family within the region. Beth Eggers, a descendant of Hans, says the Eggers family has learnt an appreciation of the Moutere area because of its strong ties. “We’re a very strong knitted
family and we really respect our history. I think it’s probably a uniqueness to have so many of us still here that are related. We all grew up together in the valley,” Hans Eggers. says Beth. There are still a handful of family members that actually met Hans, who arrived in the area in 1859, and Beth says
the common theme from those that did get the opportunity was how much of a family man he was. “He used to love children and taught them everything on the farm.” Activities planned for the reunion include a beer fest, dawn walk, formal dinner, church service and a special memorial which will include photos of all of his children and a time capsule. You can register for the reunion online at www.hanseggers.co.nz. The reunion was scheduled to be held at the Moutere Hills Community Centre, prior to Tuesday’s fire.

Just last month there were thousands of berries being picked at Daelyn. Fast forward a few years and all of that could be swapped with cyclists racing around a new velodrome. According to Nelson City Council’s principal adviser for reserves and community facilities, Andrew Petheram, the land was bought off owners John and Lyn Sutton by the Tasman District Council and was then leased back to the pair. That lease contract had since run out, which meant work on the next stage of expansion at Saxton Field could begin. That expansion includes a cycle velodrome, a third entrance and concert space which could double as sports fields. “The front piece is for the cycle velodrome and then the area behind will be an area of open space, which could be used for sports grounds and concert space,” says Andrew. The proposals for the expansion were in the TDC’s long term plan for 2014/15, but when he double checked, they were not in the plans for the NCC. The last upgrade to the Saxton Field sports complex was a second entrance on Main Rd Stoke and the next stage will be the third one, which comes out onto Champion Rd in Richmond. Andrew says feedback from the new entrance had been “very positive,” although the benefits were not likely to be fully seen until the winter sports season begins. “On a Saturday morning it will be a really positive move and that’s why we want to expand it out to Champion Rd too.”

Tapawera artists join for exhibition A Tapawera exhibition will showcase everything the region’s top artists have to offer. Marketing it as a day out for those north of the Spooner’s Range, one of the artists involved, Kirstie Hogg, says the Visual Art Society Tapawera’s exhibition appeals because of its rural themes. Kirstie, who currently has a display at Kaimira Estate, has been painting rural images, based on her work mates and family. Cycle bridge to officially open The latest leg of the Great Taste Cycle Trail from Nelson to Mapua will be officially opened this Saturday and organisers would like to see as many people as possible there to kick off the celebrations. The opening will start at the Waimea bridge off Lower Queen St, from 11am with everyone on their bikes. The group will then cycle along the new trail and to the new $250,000 bridge, completed just before Christmas. Cyclists are recommended to begin at 10am. The event is being organised by the Tasman District Council and the Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust. Organisers are asking for a gold coin donation. The car park of the Nelson Speedway will be open for public parking. For more information on the day visit www.heartofbiking.org.nz.

event calendar and I hope it keeps coming back year after year. (Via text). Old house at Appleby Straight: I think it may have been a nurse’s home once. Simon Scowen. This building is amazing! I didn’t know anyone owned it that I am sorry for but I took a few snaps with my car. Danielle Downer.

Hey, I was just flicking through the Waimea Weekly when I came across a piece about the “most photographed house”, the old wool shed in Appleby. I thought you guys might like to know the story behind that famous heart in the window. When I was about 12 years old, my two friends Liam and Alex and I were messing around in the old wool shed, as kids do we were making a mess of things. I was drawing the heart in the window, which back then was my trademark on everything! I looked up to see two men

Just a thought: Good grief Is it that time already? Some students are having to report to confirm their courses this week and it won’t be long before schools start again properly. With this, the year will begin it’s usual hectic schedule. To some in the community this will be far from the reality. The turning of calendar pages reinforce the absence of loved ones and the grief this brings. Grief is how we handle loss - how we cope and work our way through loss. We experience grief of loss not just when someone dies but in many aspects of life. Like when a relationship fails, when children leave home, when we lose a home in a fire, as we age and our capabilities reduce and most profoundly when we lose someone close to us through death. Many try to describe grief as a cycle because the emotions or stages you go through seem to follow a fairly specific and repeatable. With time reducing in intensity as lives adjust to the loss. Ged from Little Green Truck now has a tail-gate lifter fitted to his truck which enables him to load heavy items singlehandedly.
Little Green Truck owner/operator Ged Robinson obviously spent a lot of time in 2012 figuring out ways to make his business even more helpful. First of all he came up with the Green waste removal service where he drops off a wool sack, waits for you to fill it and then comes back to collect it and take it away. Now he has fitted a tailgate lifter to his truck that allows him to single handedly put your larger and heavier items on to the truck. If you were worried you might have to help him lift items like fridges and freezers, then worry no more as the tailgate lifter makes light work of the job. Ged helps you move all of the things you can’t transport yourself from Trademe purchases to office moves and even rubbish
that needs dumping. If you need to transport anything round town and don’t have access to a trailer or truck then call Ged now on 0800 500 100 for an affordable hassle free service. You can also book on line at www.littlegreentruck.com Need My Freeview installed before the digital changeover? Give Rowan Dron a call. Rowan is busy installing My Freeview, HD digital television to homes across the region, ensuring you will still be able to access all free to air channels when the switch to digital television takes place in April. Gr wing Things
With Robyn Hollis
As I start this column I am reminded of an old saying (yep…I’m full of them) “be careful what you wish for…”. This comes to mind as we have been wishing for rain, all of us, for some time now and I am thinking that, after having just come in from a very wet and windy walk with Cruze and having to literally wade through the water in the driveway, that we have been granted our wish!! It is absolutely great to get such a rain but does he have to send it all at once? I know- we are never happy so we will take what we get and stop with the whinging already, and I will go out soon and rescue what’s left of the flattened beans and soggy lettuce and keep planting more of both in the lovely wet soil. Things are almost back to normal in the Hollis household and I have to say that the “outside kitchen” has been getting a real thrashing since it’s timely installation. As the weather was damp and it is under cover, I used it to make my first jam of the season with some beautiful blackcurrants given to me by my lovely neighbour Judy. “Lady Bountiful” arrived with a large bag of these delights and very purple hands, so having done all the hard work the least I could do was make the jam. Another neighbour phoned to say that the plums needed to be harvested or the wind and the birds would get the lot. They had left a ladder placed near the tree so, braving force 9 winds, I climbed up and gathered the 6lbs or so needed for the first batch of plum sauce. Quite a hair raising feat for
one who is not good on ladders! The sauce was also made on the outdoor gas top and the smell of vinegar just wafts away over the fence. I am now feeling very virtuous as the first bottles of the season are on the pantry shelves. I think I have told you that we have family living in the Ukraine. They celebrate Christmas over there on January 7 and we got a call to say that all gifts etc had arrived and were under the tree so we decided to celebrate their date as well. Our friends next door had invited us for tea on the evening of the 6th and said they were game to help us in this, so over we went, dressed up in our Ukrainian shirts and armed with a bottle of the best Honey Vodka. The tradition is that you toast everyone at the table – we felt that this was a bit over the top as there were 6 of us and the Vodka packs a punch – so we all had a toast (or several toasts – I am not quite sure) to our family in Yavoriv and had a great Christmas Eve!! Now, the reason for this bit of a ramble is that I found a couple of recipes for making fruit liqueurs and thought you may like to use these if you have an excess of blueberries or rhubarb. Mirtillino – This is an Italian Liqueur made from blueberries. 200 grams of blueberries 50 grams of sugar 500 mls Vodka With the help of a funnel put the blueberries, sugar then the vodka in a bottle. Leave in the sun for a few days until the
sugar dissolves, then store in a dark place for at least one month. Serve in small glasses as a cocktail and add a few boozy blueberries as a garnish – This is a lovely base for a long drink also, with lots of ice. Rhubarb Liqueur – Used as a digestive or an aperitif. 500ml water 200 grams sugar A few drops of lemon juice 200 grams of rhubarb cleaned and cut into 5cm pieces. 500ml Vodka Boil the water with the sugar and lemon juice until the sugar has dissolved. Add the rhubarb pieces and bring back to the boil. Simmer approx 2 minutes then remove the rhubarb pieces. (Use these in a dessert or on cereal). Let the syrup cool completely and then add the Vodka. Store in a litre jar or bottle for one month in a dark place. Filter through a muslin cloth and store in the fridge. This is also good served as a tall drink with tonic and ice. I know this is supposed to be a garden column but it is always fun to try out new ways of using what you grow.

• After the hot winds we have had, trim off the dried up or dead leaves from shrubs and perennials to help them shoot new growth. • Summer prune wisterias. Just remove all the tentacles making sure you don’t cut them back too hard. If the plant is setting too many seed pods it is not putting its energy into producing next season’s buds. • Roses need a feed now to keep them going through summer. They can also be mulched to retain ground moisture (we have had a bit of that recently…) so keep it in the ground and add extra potassium and magnesium as well. • Don’t forget foliar feeding for the entire garden at this time- the good old Seasol and Powerfeed combo is great for all plants. Only do this late in the evening or early morning before the sun hits the plants, and they will love you for it. • If you have a spray regime – keep it up. After this wet spell fungal diseases will be prevalent so skim milk and water 1/10 is a good deterrent. Enjoy your garden, and make the most of the long summer days ahead.

Park your car well away from the bus stop or other children so you don’t block drivers, children’s or the bus driver’s visibility. Get out of your car and meet your child or walk with them to the designated bus stop.
Students – wait at the nominated bus stop
area and stand well back from the road edge. Bus stops have usually been chosen as a safer place to stop. After you have got off the bus wait as far away from the road edge as possible, until the bus has moved away. If you need to cross the road, wait until the bus has driven off and you can see clearly up and down the road.
Thank you.

Pedestrian crossings are places where pedestrians should be able to cross the road in safety. Drivers need to slow down as they approach them and be prepared to stop. Students and families will also be reminded of the importance of using the correct place to safely cross the road outside the school.
both high and low speed roads. However, the faster your vehicle is travelling, the more likely it is that a child will be killed if they are hit. 75% of fatalities around New Zealand from school bus incidents occur on roads with a 100km/h speed limit. If cars were to keep to the 20 km/h speed limit there would be fewer incidents, fewer injuries and fewer deaths.

Ten year old Jordan picks up three golds Phillip Rollo He might only be ten years old but Jordan Stirling-Rowling is lightning quick. Walking into the Saxton Oval athletics track with his three South Island Colgate Games gold medals draped around his neck, the quietly spoken Richmond School student was feeling pretty happy with himself after a very successful weekend in Invercargill. Jordan collected gold medals in the ten year old boys 100m, 200m and 400m finals, which was more than he expected leading up to the biggest event of its kind for young athletes. “Before we went there I thought the 400m was his best event and I thought he could win gold and that but the other two were going to be pretty close,” says his father Nigel Stirling. “But they didn’t get near him. It was like [New Zealand 400m champion] Alex Jordan racing here, he was just too good. He left them for dead.” His 100m time of 13.52 seconds is a new personal best as was his 200m time of 28.66 seconds. He ran the 400m in 68.82 seconds but says there were “gale force” winds down the back straight. Jordan has been doing athletics for four years now, despite his young age. Running season into high gear It’s the “business end” for runners and walkers as they prepare for the Buller Marathon in less than three weeks. Tonight's 5km in the Sprig & Fern Six O’clock Summer Series is their next important pace workout with the following Tuesday’s 10km the real test and guide as to what each can expect when they stop the clock in Westport on February 9. Record numbers have been turning up along the Maitai Valley Rd with 88 in last week's 3km even after flooding earlier in the day closed the road. Andy Leonard and Chris Fitchett were the closest to their estimates. Both were a second adrift with
Leonard adjudged the winner of a complimentary entry into the Kaiteriteri Gold Half Marathon after the tape was checked and fractions applied. Swiss student David Bill has been the one to beat posting an impressive 9min 15secs after a strong half marathon in the same territory two days before. Start tomorrow night is at the Upper Maitai Valley Camp, 6pm for walkers with runners 10 minutes later, entry is free and open to all. Numbers continue to climb for April’s Alpine Lodge Loop the Lake with nearly 250 registered and the event rapidly closing in on its capacity. Full details www.nelsonevents.co.nz.

Falcons run riot Top of the ASB Youth League's southern conference on goal differential, New Zealand King Salmon Nelson Falcons head coach Davor Tavich believes the side's confidence is playing a big part in the successful beginning. "I think there will be some teams taking notice of us now." Speaking just moments after the Falcons dispatched YoungHeart Manawatu 8-0 at Trafalgar Park in front of another healthy crowd, Davor says the team will look to play in a similar vein in Wellington this weekend. "They're all tough games but we're just going to take another positive approach into this weekend and hope for a result," he says. During his short post-match discussion with the Waimea Weekly, Davor was handed a blank certificate for man of the match. He didn’t have to think twice about who he would give it to. "Dan [Grimshaw]." After scoring five goals to make him the competition's
leading goal scorer, would you blame him? "Anybody that scores five goals is going to be man of the match in my books." The Falcons forward had bagged four of his five goals in the opening 33 minutes and could have scored more had he not picked up an injury while putting his fifth past the opposition keeper. Blenheim's Tore Waechter scored two goals after another impressive showing in the middle of the park while Niall Young knocked in the eight goal after an initial shot from substitute Sam Maxwell. Davor says the side looked to pick up the intensity after a slow start against Canterbury United last week. "We applied a lot of pressure on Manawatu from the first minute and that was the plan. Any mistake they made, we wanted to use it against them. We were very strong at the back yet again. Obviously they didn't score a goal and I'm really proud of that actually."

A depleted Wanderers side has lost the Colin Aitken Trophy Twenty20 final by just ten runs, going down to Stoke/Nayland at Saxton Oval on Saturday. Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers were without Dan Cooper, Joe O’Connor and Connor Neynens, as all three were on Nelson represenative duties. During his postmatch speech Car Company Stoke/ Nayland captain Alex Coles says that was probably the difference between the two sides, with the eventual winners able to call up some rising stars that performed with distinction in the final. Wanderers captain Andy Leonard was proud that his side made it to their first final in at least six years, but was disappointed to fall short of the 162 run target with just two balls to spare. “Yeah it’s always disappointing to lose a final but I guess somebody has to,” he says.
Andy says the experience was a key factor in the final, with Stoke/ Nayland making plenty of finals appearances during the past five years. “We’re a young side. I’m the only old man in the team and I think experience in games like this can be pretty important.” Losing the trio of rep players was a “huge difference,” he added. “Two of our three are all-rounders so they’re batting and bowling but it’s just one of those things.” He hoped the experience would help build depth in the club and potentially push on to another final once the one day campaign begins. “For sure, that’s the main thing we’ll get out of this. We’re confident and we’d love to be here for the one day competition.” Wanderers will get their chance at revenge this weekend when they square off against Stoke/Nayland in the first round of the one dayers.
