World Cup fun coming to Tasman

Cricket pitch needed P 24

Teresa Hattan Richmond is set to become party central this September. The Richmond Festival is being run on three consecutive days and will feature a Tasman Sevens Invitational tournament, a Richmond Fare Block Party and a Tailgate Party from September 25 to 27. The festival coincides with the crème de le crème of rugby, the Rugby World Cup. Contributions have been received from the New Zealand Lottery Grants Board festival lottery fund, which was established to support public events and activities associated with the 2011 Rugby World Cup. The Tasman District Council applied for funding and received $20,700 to go towards the three events being run by Ant Holder, Richmond Unlimited and the A&P Association. Judene Edgar, Richmond Unlimited committee member and Tasman District councillor, says Richmond has unofficially adopted America for the duration of the Rugby World Cup. “It gives us that opportunity to actually bring a bit of the red, white and blue to the Tasman area, Richmond in particular, and gives us an opportunity to have a bit of fun out of this,” she says. The sevens tournament is being run on September 25 and will kick the Richmond Festival off. This event is being run by Ant Holder, who used to play rugby in America. Despite it only being February, Ant says lots of planning has already been done.

Sun shines on Brightwater’s festival... again The sun shone brightly as another successful Brightwater Wine and Food festival was held over the weekend. The annual event is organised by Rotary Club Richmond and is held each year at the winery on Bryant Rd. Chairman of the organising committee Ken McDonald, says they are unsure of how many people passed through the gates, but it appeared to be about the same as last year – around 4,000. The committee were also unsure of how much money had been raised for the Summit Rescue Helicopter, but the average amount raised over the past seven years has been $30,000.

“We’ve already had some wonderful feedback. It has been centred around how well it was run,” says Ken. Ken says it was also great to see everyone being sun smart. “It was lovely to see all the colours of the umbrellas, everyone was observing the slip, slop, slap and wrap campaign.” What made the festival so great was the atmosphere according to Ken. “One couple from Christchurch said they even scheduled their holidays around the festival.” Ken says it was great to see so many families enjoying the day out at the festival and Rotary are looking forward to hosting the event next year.

Summer fare nearly here ‘A local business supporting a local event for the local community’ is how Sprig and Fern directors David Barrett and Tracy Banner describe their involvement with, and commitment to, Richmond Unlimited’s Last of the Summer Fare. Sprig and Fern has confirmed it sponsorship of this years Last of the Summer Fare event, which will take place on March 25 in the Sundial Square, Richmond. “From a personal perspective, it is the biggest event on the Sprig and Fern calendar,” says David. “We have been principal sponsors since the very first Last of the Summer Fare and it is fabulous that Richmond residents have an event where they can come together as a community, in the town centre, where there is a good family atmosphere. “With the event being held in the evening it encourages people to bring the whole family along, catch up with friends and neighbours and sample the best local produce our region has to offer - all in a safe, controlled and very welcoming environment.” The Last of the Summer Fare will run from 5.30pm to 10 pm and will see Sundial Square transformed into a medieval fete. Musical entertainment, a Lords and Ladies fashion show and children’s games will all be part of the fun night out. Stallholders will be selling the best in food, wine and beer and delicacies ranging from roasted macadamia nuts to hot pork sandwiches will tempt the most discerning of tastebuds. Sprig and Fern will have a selection of their finest beers, ciders and a non alcoholic ginger beer available. Hope girl earns ‘Top Cadet’ and sailing title in one weekend Andrew Board Less than 24 hours after earning the Top Cadet award at an Air Cadet aviation course in Blenheim, Hope teenager Phillipa Wood was in Auckland, winning a national title in sailing. However, her success has led to a quandary. Because of her Laser 47 sailing title, Phillippa, 17, has qualified for the world championships this winter in Brazil. But, she has also been selected to travel to the United States on an International Air Cadet Exchange at the same time. Phillippa says it was a tough decision on what she would attend but has picked the latter, after already competing at the world laser champs last year in Barcelona. She, along with Atawhai’s Edin Goldberg, were selected for the exchange, two of only eight handed out to New Zealanders each year. It is a major achievement for the Nelson Cadet unit says training officer flight lieutenant Rick McNabb. “It’s pretty incredible to have two cadets from one unit selected for this, it just reinforces that what we do here is working and that it is getting recognised.” The Nelson Air Training Corps, based at Nelson Airport, is one of more than 50 units throughout New Zealand and teach-

es young people a range of skills including navigation, safety and the odd bit of flying. The annual exchange is a worldwide programme that cadets apply to be a part of and Rick says it is the first time two cadets from Nelson have been selected to go in the same year. “We have had someone go each year for about the past six, but to get two is unheard of, the gods have smiled on us.” Earning a place on the exchange comes on top of the Top Cadet award Phillippa received in January at the Royal New Zealand Air Force base at Woodbourne, near Blenheim. Edin, a Nayland College student who is heading to Canada, says she can’t wait for the exchange and says it is a real honour. “I’m just so excited, it is really hard to get into and it will be great being there representing Nelson and New Zealand and meeting all sorts of new people.” Cadets are typically taken to tourist hot spots, Air Force bases and get to do some flying in their host country. A group travels through Nelson each year as part of their tour of New Zealand. The two Nelson cadets must raise enough money to cover half of their airfare; the rest of the trip is paid for by the programme. Phillippa, who attends Waimea College and became the first person to sail across the Cook Straight in an Optimist in 2008,

Coffee masters display their talent at regional comp

The delicious smell of coffee wafted through the air as each competitor trembled under the judges’ watchful eyes. James Ensor, barista at the Playhouse Café and Theatre Restaurant, has been making coffee for three years. It’s not just the motoring media lauding Hyundai’s i45 sedan – consumer groups praise the car too. “Right through 2010, the i45 received numerous awards and accolades from the international motoring media, leading online industry directories, design institutes, safety associations,” commented the Chief Operating Officer of Hyundai New Zealand, Tom Ruddenklau. “But of course the toughest of all critics are consumers, and they have repeatedly indicated high interest in the i45. For example, the car is placed in the top five most researched new models in the United States’ largest automotive vehicle valuation company, the respected Kelley Blue Book – and the list goes on with the i45 repeatedly recognised as class-leading,” says Mr Ruddenklau. Across numerous comparison tests the i45 delivered top results, with outright wins from Edmunds.com, Car & Driver Magazine, USA Today and Wheels Magazine, all rating the i45 as number one in its class for on-road performance and driver experience. Since a cornerstone of the Hyundai brand is ensuring industry-leading technology is affordable to everyone, it’s hardly surprising that recognition has been received for affordability from leading publications; the US News, Sports Auto and TopSpeed magazines among others. Hyundai’s ‘fluidic sculpture’ design language expressed in the i45 was recognised with a prestigious Australian Design Award. Developed from the ground up and with meticulous attention to detail, the i45 has been praised by the Australian Institute of Design, which applauded the “considered approach to the professional design process”, and the “incorporation of innovation and environmentally-responsible decisions.” And the i45 has been recognised across the automotive segment, competing against all classes, to receive coveted Car of the Year titles from titles including Sports Auto, Gulf Auto and Detroit News. At this month’s Detroit International Motor Show, the i45 was recognised by Road & Travel Magazine as its 2011 International Car of the Year. With over 440,000 units sold globally in 2010, the i45 has not only been a game- changing new model in the Hyundai line-up, but also one of the most successful new vehicles Hyundai has ever produced. Ride for Hope raises thousands for local community You could have mistaken the roar of motorbike engines for a tornado on Saturday as 300 bikers took to the region’s roads. The Richmond Mall Foundation’s Ride for Hope was a “real community event” according to organiser and Richmond Mall manager David Hill. “I would’ve been chuffed to bits with a hundred but with 300 bikes turning up it made for an outstanding day, beyond my wildest dreams especially for the first one,” he says. People travelled to the ride from as far away as Golden Bay and Motueka. “Some travelled over from Blenheim, so there was a good cross section,” says David. Support from the Waimea and Nelson Weekly, along with those that supplied prizes, helped make the event what it was according to David. The turnout for the ride was also great. “It was really special that all these people turned up to support it from a variety of motorcycle clubs and groups and individuals, it was very humbling.” David and the other organisers Judene Edgar and Rachel Ray will get together next week to hold a de-briefing session. “The three of us will get together next week and talk about the stuff that worked well and the stuff that we can improve on for next year,” says David. But reflecting on the day, David says “the length of it was about right; the route was about right so it’s just a matter of tightening up on some of the times.” Different abilities were made to feel welcome on the ride. “There were a couple of scooters in there right through to the big bikes. “It’s not very often that you can get together in an environment like that to be able to ride in a group. Usually most motorcyclists would head out on the weekend in a small group or by themselves, but to go out with 300 people is an experience in itself,” says David. A total of $6,000 was raised after the Richmond Mall owners matched funds dollar for dollar. “Now we’ve got critical mass, we’ve got about $10,000 including the money from the rodeo,” says David. The Richmond Mall Foundation will be accept-

Hair today gone tomorrow, charity chop looms Dizzy’s store to be remembered Teresa Hattan

Friends Aliesha Shutte and Jenna Ross will have one more thing in common come Friday. The 17 year-olds are going completely bald in the name of charity. Aliesha and Jenna say they made the important decision while at work one evening last year. “We were sitting there talking about it, not being completely serious and we were both, I’d shave if you shave kind of thing and it ended up it was either shave your hair for cancer or 18 shot glasses of vinegar,” says Jenna with a laugh. The Waimea College Year 13 students are raising money for the New Zealand Leukaemia and Blood Foundation and are participating in the foundation’s Shave for a Cure promotion. The pair will loose their lovely locks at lunch time on Friday and are hoping to raise $2,000. The brave souls have already raised half this. Aliesha and Jenna have also been hosting events to raise money. A car wash a few weeks ago raised $300 and a zumba night in Hope tomorrow is sure to gather a bit more. Going from long tresses to a bald head is obviously making both Aliesha and Jenna quite nervous.“I’m only going to do it once,” says Jenna. February is quite a good time to loose

Both Aliesha and Jenna say finding inspiration to carry them through this daunting task is easy. Jenna’s grandmother died of leukaemia and she has had an aunt die of cancer. One of the girls’ teachers from Brightwater School has also died from the disease and a boy in their year group died of leukaemia. Both Aliesha and Jenna say they feel happy to be healthy. “Anything we can do to help them, it’s going to grow back,” says Jenna. But shaving their hair off completely isn’t enough for these courageous teenagers. Aliesha and Jenna are also giving their hair to make wigs for cancer patients. Going from long hair to none at all will involve a small lifestyle change for the girls. The shampoo and conditioner bill will be drastically reduced and the pair won’t have a need for hair straighteners for a few months “It won’t take me long to get ready in the mornings anymore,” BRIGHTWATER BALDIES: Aliesha says Aliesha. The Diserens’ families have erected a plaque to commemorate the Old Gowan Store and plan an unveiling this Saturday. The Gowanbridge Store, known as Dizzy’s Store, was first erected at Pikomau to serve the railway families who were constructing the railway line from Nelson to Inangahua Junction. In 1926 the store was relocated to Gowan Bridge and re-erected by Percy and Ralph Diserens. It was expected to follow and serve the construction workers, but when the railway building ceased the store remained and served the local community. After Percy Diserens retired the store was run by his son Ralph. Both father and son were known as Dizzy. The store closed in 1977.Anyone and everyone, with a Dizzy story or without, are invited to the unveiling of the memorial plaque at Gowan Bridge at 3pm.

BACK ON BOARD: Graeme Fryer is returning to drive the bus for the Waimea College first XV rugby team. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Driving force behind first XV Phillip Rollo Graeme Fryer is returning to drive the Waimea College first XV to Press Cup glory. But before they can achieve any results on the rugby field, Graeme will be making sure the team gets to Christchurch safely as the official bus driver for the team. The Waimea Intermediate staff member spent the first seven years of Waimea College's Press Cup history volunteering to drive the team on their away trips as well as helping out with cooking. Graeme is the groundsman at Waimea Intermediate, is a teacher aid and also works at the Suburban Bus Service. His son played in the very first Waimea College Press Cup side and he thought if he got sponsorship from the bus company then he would drive the bus for the team. "Somehow I was silly enough to do it for seven years," he says. After a couple of years away from the bus duties, Graeme is now back behind the wheel for the Waimea team and will be driving the squad again this season. He does it for the love of the sport and enjoys being with the boys.

Even when he had taken two years off he was still a noticeable supporter on the sidelines at most home games. So does Graeme get along well with the team? "You better ask them." he chuckles. Graeme has family in Christchurch which is "a bit of a plus" for the Richmond local. But it means he makes the trip down the Lewis Pass on a regular basis and is now a frequent traveller, which can make for a speedy trip. "I did 25 trips to Christchurch last year. You get to know the road and when you get to know the road it's much quicker." With a new format to the competition which sees Waimea College entered alongside Marlborough Boys College, Nayland College and Nelson College, there is only two away trips in the first round. But the bus is ready to go down south when called upon. But what's his prediction for the coming season? "I think they have a fairly good chance of getting out of their pool. T h e n we'll see SHOWERS w h a t SHOWERS f r o m SHOWERS there."

Waimea Old Boys

GO FOR GOLD

This is the year for rugby. And 2011 is the year for Waimea Old Boys, say faithful supporters. Last season, Waimea won the senior division 3 competition and the women’s competition and its division 2 side were runners up, having won its competition for the three previous years. But the biggest title, the division 1 competition, is still on the radar for Waimea, having lost in the semi finals in 2010. But, this year an influx of new stars in the backline and with the core of its dominant forward pack intact, Waimea should push title contenders Nelson and

Stoke all the way. Inspirational lock forward Ben Coman will again lead Waimea’s top side this season and has around him a host of familiar faces including props Hamish Cochrane and wider Crusaders training squad member, Sam Prattley. The forward pack will be coached again by Rik Taikato. In the backs, run by Waimea legends Dion Mytton and Mark Milne, halfback Kaide Whiting will again be favourite to control the base of the scrum, duties that earned him a spot in last years Tasman Mako team. Outside him though is a new face in former Canterbury B first

five, Phil Gibson. Phil is originally from Karamea and has played in Australia for the past few years. His partnership with Kaide will play a big role in the teams’ success this year. Other young players in the squad includes New Zealand Secondary Schools star James Lowe and last years exciting rookie Jesse Pitman, a talented midfielder. Winger James Kamana, currently playing Super 15 rugby with the Lions in South Africa, is also expected to make a return late in the season. Waimea’s top team kicks off its season on 19 March against Nelson at Neale Park.

Richmond historian Peter Kearns takes a look at the way Richmond used to be and what has changed over the past 100 years. A past Richmond resident the late Valda Ward (nee Beach), a daughter of Wilfred Beach, from the well known family featured in a recent article, kept a “scrap book” of many things pertaining to events of Richmond. It is apparent that an Ian Beach, no doubt a relation, had provided a sketch of an earlier street layout, METHODIST CHURCH: This church is now demolished, but perhaps about the 1900 era. Good samaritan collects books A passion for helping people has seen Richmond man Russell Egan get in touch with his literary side. Russell has been visiting the small settlements of Seddonville and Mokihinui on the West Coast for over 20 years each whitebait season. So when the Mokihinui River flooded recently, destroying the over 3,000 books in the local Seddonville library, Russell knew he had to do something to help. Like father, like son ON TRACK: Athletics Nelson coach Greg Lautenslager and his son Craig on the track at Saxton Field last week. Photo: Phillip Rollo. Phillip Rollo Greg Lautenslager has been the main man on the Nelson athletics scene for the past eight years. His wealth of experience, skill and character has helped train and develop some of the country's top athletes. A big family man, Greg's running nous is now catching on through the next generation with his son Craig, who is quickly becoming one of the rising stars on the local track scene. Craig, 17, has grown considerably over the past year both on and off the track and has used his 6ft 1 figure to power through his favoured 1500 metre and 3000m events. His highlight of the season came in the New Zealand M19 3000m final in Palmerston North. The former Garin College student clung to the leading pack

throughout the race and a sprint finish saw him finish fourth place in 8 minutes 49.30 seconds, a personal best by 15sec. The personal best and strong finish were just rewards for an athlete who has patiently waited for his time at the top. Despite having the gene pool from both parents, Greg competed in the 5000m at the United States Olympic trials and mum Debbie represented New Zealand at the 1986 Commonwealth games, Craig originally was not in to running at all. “I didn't encourage him to run as a child,” Greg says. “Everyone had their kids running around and racing. Our boys were out playing in the creek, and that was great.” Even when he decided to join Athletics Nelson, much to the delight of his father, it was still a patient process. “He used to be beat

by girls his own age. He's been very patient. Never discouraged about it. Because he knew the best times were in front of him.” But with the blood lines there, living with one of the best track and field coaches in the country, Craig's time is now upon him. He puts a lot of his development down to his father. “Whenever you want to know something he'll go over it and he'll be right there for you.” Craig's focus is now on the New Zealand Track and Field Championship where he will represent Tasman in the 1500m. With younger brothers Jeff, 15, and Jared, 12, running faster times than Craig did at their age the Lautenslager name will hold strong in Nelson for many years to come. But with 48 points in a single mini-ball game, Jeff could could be taking a different path.

Bowlers win trophy and $2,000 purse Four ladies from the Richmond Bowling Club came home from the West Coast $2,000 richer earlier this month. Alison Brett, Colleen Kempton, Kay Tomlinson and Colleen Lankshear were winners of the West Coast Annual Fours Jubilee trophy at the three day tournament earlier this month. With 42 teams travelling from as far away as Wanaka the ladies say the tournament was very friendly. The trophy has been played for since 1946 and the bowlers say they were ecstatic to win. Sweetening the deal was the $2,000 prize money the team were presented with.

Cricket pitch needed to encourage growth in Tapawera community Teresa Hattan The Tapawera community sure love their cricket. Currently the only cricket pitch is located at the school, but in the summer it almost becomes a hazard. Tapawera School, along with the community and the Tapawera Sport and Recreational Society are currently fundraising for a new artificial pitch to be installed. Teacher and cricket coach Rebecca Shearer says the current pitch is causing a few problems. “Time is probably the biggest issue with the amount of time you have to spend rolling it, cutting it and watering it,” she says. The poor quality of the pitch, not due to its lack of care, currently hampers on the amount of cricket the students are able to play. “With an artificial pitch you’re always going to have a consistent surface and just making it so much more accessible for them to enjoy cricket on a regular basis,” says Rebecca. “It also then opens it up for the community.” By fundraising through the Tapawera Sport and Recreational Society it will result in a community pitch being created. The school has offered their grounds to build it on.

Cricket is certainly a growing sport at Tapawera School. neat,” says Rebecca. “We currently have about 60 students involved in cricket So far, around $1,200 has been raised towards the $8,000 ranging from five through to 14. We’ve also got senior students needed to install an artificial pitch. Rebecca says everyone is which are keen so next year we want to have a college team as feeling positive the money will be able to be sourced in time well which will mean we’re covering from five right through for next year’s cricket season, which starts next October. to 17. Being an area school that’d be awesome to be able to do The school says it is grateful for the support they have already that,” says Rebecca. received from both local businesses and the community. Navigation Safety Bylaw: Temporary Reservation and speed-limit uplifting for Multisport races around Kaiteriteri

Commencement of Operative Parts V and VI of the Tasman Resource Management Plan

TenEvents has applied to Tasman District Council to run the Kaiteriteri Beach Adventure Race, a national multisport championship event, within the Kaiteriteri and Marahau areas on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 February 2011. The planned paddling and swimming races will have competitors and support vessels passing through and occupying the Kaiteriteri water-ski area, and paddlecraft potentially racing between there and Anawera Point, Fisherman Island or Split Apple Rock as weather dictates. Pursuant to the provisions contained in the Navigation Safety Bylaw, the Tasman District Council’s Harbourmaster has granted a temporary reservation of the Kaiteriteri waterski area for the purposes of the Event, between the hours of 7.00 am and 4.00 pm on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 February 2011. The effect of the temporary reservation will be to prevent other activities including water skiing from occurring within that area for the time specified. Event Marshalls have the authority to require other users to vacate these areas as required, but may allow limited use when racers are well offshore, at the organiser’s discretion. An uplift of the 5 knot speed restrictions has also been granted to paddlecraft and support vessels directly involved in the Event in the areas specified above. Persons wishing to waterski at Kaiteriteri during this event should consult first with Event Marshalls, or use the ski areas in the Abel Tasman National Park area. The closest are at Stillwell Beach or Adele Island spit. Swimmers and other water users close to shore in the area should be aware of the potential of close encounters with racing paddlecraft. A number of conditions have been imposed on the organisers of the event, and these conditions may be viewed by emailing Nathan Faa’vae at nathan@tenevents.co.nz, or calling Tasman District Council’s Harbourmaster on 03 543 8400 during office hours.

Notice is given that the Tasman District Council has, on 27 January 2011, approved Parts V (Water) and VI (Discharges), including planning maps, to commence from 26 February 2011 as operative parts of the Tasman Resource Management Plan. The text of the Plan as operative will be viewable on Council’s website www.tasman.govt.nz from 28 February 2011 and the text and maps as Update 38 to the Plan can be purchased from the Council. All current Plan holders of the Plan will be forwarded Update 38. Please contact Pam Meadows 03 543 8581 or pam.meadows@tasman.govt.nz for information on purchasing the full Plan, as updated.

Tasman District Council Navigation Safety Bylaw: Speed Limit Suspension and Reservation of Kerr Bay Lake Rotoiti, Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 March 2011 The NZ Antique and Classic Boat Show will be held at Kerr Bay, Lake Rotoiti between 9.00 am and 5.00 pm on both 5 March and 6 March 2011. Pursuant to powers provided to the Harbourmaster by the TDC Navigation Safety Bylaw 2005 (Amended 2006), the speed limits imposed by the Bylaw in relation to vessels within 50 metres of another vessel, or within 200 metres of shore or a structure are suspended for those vessels taking part and controlling the event, and exclusive use of a reserved area is provided to the event organisers. The area reserved exclusively for this event will include all of Kerr Bay, Lake Rotoiti out to a line which heads due east from a point 200 metres south of the Brunner Peninsula. The reserved area will therefore include the water ski access lane and those areas of water immediately adjacent to the launching ramps and beach at Kerr Bay. For the dates and times detailed above, the organisers of the NZ Antique and Classic Boatshow shall have exclusive use of the area defined above and will be required to ensure that craft or persons not involved in the event do not enter the reserved area unless the permission of the event organisers has been obtained. Vessels wishing to transit through or enter the reserved area during the event may do so only after consulting with the event organisers, and then may do so when, and under such conditions that the event organisers may choose to specify. Event communications may be using UHF radio, or Channel 17 on Marine VHF radio. Vessels entering or within the reserved area are requested to comply with any direction given by the event organisers or event officials relating to passage through that reserved area as if it was a direction given by the Harbourmaster. Persons wishing to swim from the lake shore or waterski are recommended to use West Bay. Waterskiiers should deep-water start anywhere more than 200m from shore outside of the reserved area, unless towed at less than 5 knots to or from the 200m line. Other conditions have been imposed and may be viewed by contacting the Tasman District Council’s Harbourmaster at the Richmond office during office hours.

Tasman District Council will be completing resurfacing of the Decks Reserve car park during late February 2011. The work, which will take a few days, will involve chip seal resurfacing. This type of resurfacing results in some loose chip on the surface which is swept off a short time after the work is completed. The job will be done in two parts to ensure that half of the car park area will remain available for parking. Council acknowledges that this is a busy time of year in Motueka. However the nature of chip sealing work requires the resurfacing to be done during summer to ensure that the chip properly adheres to the bitumen. Council’s contractor, Fulton Hogan will contact adjacent businesses and residents at least five days prior to this work commencing. Any comments or concerns should be raised with Council’s consultants. Contact Jeremy Katterns of MWH New Zealand Ltd on 03 546 0679.
