“I do think it’s a really good idea. My daughter is Year 12 and writes her essays on the computer then has to handwrite them out again.”

wasn’t the business they were in. They were there to companion dogs with wayward kids.” Kelvin says everyone down at Richmond Park was well aware of the situation and that dogs were kept in the building overnight. “The dogs would pee for the sake of peeing on nice carpeted floor. The place absolutely reeked.” Both of these claims are strongly denied. A committee member of the harness racing club says they had no problem with The Ark and Suzanne Max, who now has The Ark operating from her farm, says they couldn’t be better tenants. “This makes me angry, I’ve looked them over very carefully and they have excellent systems in place. I’ve never seen one piece of dog litter in any of the buildings. In fact the buildings are tidier now than what they were before they moved in. It is such an excellent programme,” says Susan. Karen says “not once” did any dog stay over-

night in any of the buildings. “There is another agenda operating here and we’ve been caught in the cross fire. We cleaned the place every day and not once did anyone complain to us about the tidiness of the site.” President of the Nelson District Kennel Club Association, John Perfect, would not reveal any dispute between the club and The Ark other than to say it was “a bleeding sore on society”. He refused to say why. Karen says she can’t believe the comments by the A&P Association. “This is the first time I’m hearing any of this, we spent a lot of time trying to find out what was going on with the A&P Association and didn’t. It all seems very strange.” Karen says The Ark has put the issue behind it and is focusing on what it does best. “We have a great programme here that makes a huge difference to the lives of local teenagers and dogs. We are excited about our future and will continue to work hard.”

Clarification for readers Waimea Weekly prides itself on accuracy for our readers. Two weeks ago we dropped the ball. We implied that mayor Richard Kempthorne said it was just “tough luck” to the ratepayers who had their rates increased by up to 400%. Mayor Kempthorne said no such thing. This was our inference. We apologise to Richard and also wish to advise it was us who insisted on this apology not anyone from the council. Steve Page, Publisher.

Two fires were lit at a Champion Rd home on Saturday night, destroying the garage and 50 per cent of the house. Richmond volunteer fire chief Ralph Lonsdale described the shed as a “mechanics paradise” with thousands of dollars worth of items being damaged. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Fire destroys ‘mechanics paradise’

Phillip Rollo A garage that any mechanic would “give an arm and a leg for” has been destroyed in a suspicious house fire on Saturday night. The occupants, New Life Church pastors Jono and Vanessa Martin, were on a church mission in Zimbabwe when the fire occured and have since flown home to Nelson with their three children. Church elder Richard Kempthorne says the Martins were not answering their phone on Tuesday, with all calls going directly to the church family instead. Overhead crains, work benches, vices and an inspection pit at the Champion Rd property had been turned into ash. A family car, tents, bicycles and a quad bike were also destroyed. A dog and a caged bird were killed in the fire. The house itself was “50 per cent” destroyed and will have to come down and be rebuilt, says Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade chief officer Ralph Lon-

Residents talk rates with mayor

Phillip Rollo

Richmond West residents Maxwell Clark and Shona McBride spoke with mayor Richard Kempthorne yesterday. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Tasman District mayor Richard Kempthorne last night met with the ten Richmond West landowners who have seen their rates skyrocket 400 per cent. Ten Richmond West landowners have seen their rates and capital property values rise after the land was rezoned to mixed business last year. Maxwell Clarke and Shona McBride’s rates have risen from $3000 per year to $12,000, after they chose to lift a deferment on the land in order to put it on the market.

All ten land owners will be expected to pay their new rates starting from July. None of the residents say they can afford the rates increase. Most of them are on the pension and intend to spend the rest of their lives at their properties, but rising rates are forcing them out. Three of the residents have put their homes on the market, but say there are no buyers. Maxwell says he would not expect anyone in their right mind to offer the new market value for his property. Two of the residents had written minutes from a council meeting in 2010 that stated development in Richmond

West would not affect their rates. The residents met with Richard at 4pm yesterday. But Maxwell says the meeting might have come too late with council putting the finishing touches on the long term plan. However, Tasman District Council communications manager Chris Choat says that is simply not true. The official document containing council’s long term plan will be released mid June and there would be plenty of time to talk new policies and find a result. A new policy can only be enacted in the long term plan.

The NZHPT says the pa tuwatawata discovered is a significant discovery and rare to find in good condition.

Bands rock the Royal

Garin College was in the limelight at last year’s Smokefreerockquest but 2012 belongs to Nelson College and its quirky jazz folk trio New Vinyl. The three piece act featuring last year’s runners up Alex Farrell-Davey and Ed Palmer, along with Allister Meffan, stole the show at a packed out Theatre Royal on Saturday, improving one spot on last year to take out top honours. Keeli Ferris, a Garin College student, is the sole pupil from a Tasman secondary school still in the running for the national final after her seven piece band Midnight’s Sun finished second. The other members of Midnight’s Sun are Robbie Day, Bo Ade-Simpon, Sam Butler, Bex Nott, Ella James and Kahu Tumai. The top two bands from each of the 24 regional finals can apply for eight spots at the National Smokefreerockquest final. They also win musical gear from New Zealand Rockshops. At stake is a prize package that includes a NZ On Air new recording and music video grant worth over $10,000, a place on the NZ On Air Kiwi Hit Disc, musical gear to the value of $10,000 from NZ Rockshops, radio promotional support for a single, and video play on youth music channel FOUR. There is also the MAINZ Scholarship for outstanding musicianship, the APRA Lyric Award, the Lowdown Best Song Award, the Smokefree Women’s Musicianship Award and the Skinny People’s Choice, voted by text, with the opportunity to open at the SFRQ National final. Students prepare for famine Teens are preparing to give up something they take for granted this weekend for the 40 Hour Famine. More than 200 students are signed up from Waimea College, hoping to raise $5000. Famines they intend to do include no food, no technology, no sleep and no talking. One group of 13 girls is planning on spending the 40 hours tied together. “It’s really about looking outside Nelson,” says

Ella Cottrell is hoping to use art designed by her late mother, Zeta Smith, in a cook book she is making.

Search begins for mother’s art Rosie Thomsen

A Richmond woman spent her last years painting as a hobby and selling the works for pocket change. Now her daughter is trying to buy them back. Ella Cottrell, daughter of Zeta Smith, is writing a cookery book titled Homestead Tales and Treats and thinks her late mother’s paintings would be the perfect accompaniment for the recipes and stories from her childhood. The inspiration for the book came from Ella’s own upbringing. She remembers helping her mother bake in their “cosy farmhouse kitchen,” creating beautiful family meals that were “not only a treat for the taste, but the setting.” Ella intends to track down as much of her mother’s work as possible for the cookery book, hoping to buy pieces that may be hanging on walls in Richmond homes. “Whilst researching for my book I realised that there must be many homes that have a ‘Zeta Smith’ original,” says Ella. The paintings were watercolour or pastel, and mostly of landscapes, flowers or animals, says Ella. They would be identifiable from the signature that she left on all her works; “Zeta Smith,” and the year they were painted. Ella says that she never knew the full extent of her mothers work, and many of the artworks dissipated amongst Zeta’s family and friends, with more being sold in exhibitions or privately throughout New Zealand. If you think you’ve got an original Zeta Smith, contact Ella at ellacottrell@googlemail.com.

LETTERS

TO THE EDITOR

I enjoyed your article about the scammer calling the police. I work from home and get a lot of these calls. The line I normally use is “please keep talking so I can have your call traced”, which usually doesn’t work very well. Well wouldn’t you know it, this afternoon I answer the phone and get “we are international computer consultants and we have detected your windows computer has a virus”. I say “really, did you realise you have called a police station”? Nek minute, instant hang up! I have never had one of these scammers hang up so quickly. Once I even had one that I had accused of being a scammer call me back and say that I was the criminal. All good fun if you know what they are up to, no so good if you don’t. Thanks again for the article. David, Tasman.

Ernie Pauling has 60 years of experience under his belt and he’s hoping to use all of that when he competes at the Tux New Zealand Sheepdog Trial Championship. The Brightwater man will be entering in his 20th national competition this weekend. Ernie is one of three Tasman competitors making the trip to Wanaka. He will be joined by Tapawera’s Eion Herbert, who is a former New Zealand representative, and Golden Bay’s Grant Wylie. There will be eleven competitors from the Marlborough region. Ernie will be competing in the short head and yard discipline and he’s certainly not going down there to make up the numbers. “I want to beat the young guns. It’s the best part about sheepdog trials,” he says. Back in 2008 when he won the South Island Championship, he managed to pip a handful of favourites and it was that experience that keeps his passion for the competition alive. Throughout his career Ernie has had a dozen sheepdogs suitable for competition. The breed of the dog can be the difference between a competitor and a work animal or pet. But it is also up to the owner to train it. Ernie went to work on a farm in 1949 and it was his boss that encouraged him to run at the trial. But Ernie says it was less than memorable and over the years he has learnt experience is key. “The dog is a fair part of it but reading what the sheep are going to do is also important and you can’t learn that in five minutes, it takes years.” Ernie’s first dog competed in the heading and huntaway events, because back in those days they weren’t as “lazy.” Brightwater resident Ernie Pauling is heading off contest the “These days they breed them more specialised and the New Zealand Shop Dog Trials in Wanaka this weekend. War blanket made of socks Rosie Thomsen

Tasman Youth Councillors; Chelcie-Mei Phillips, 15, Leigh-Ann Weaver, 17, Jayden Hughes, 17, and Melody Phipps, 16, prepare for Friday’s robot dance world record attempt. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

College attempts robot record Ron Cornelius started it, Michael Jackson perfected it and Rhys Darby spiced it up and brought it to life in New Zealand. But singing and sound effects won’t be required and neither will flash dance moves, just masses and masses of people when Waimea College attempts to break the Guinness World Record for the largest ever robot dance this Friday. The current record was set in 2010 by Adlai E. Stevenson High School in the United States, with 525 students participating. But Waimea College is expecting at least 600. Dancers need to register on the day to ensure that their name is counted as one of the record-breaking participants. There will also be spot prizes,

such as an iPod Touch, for participation and best moves. Tasman Youth Councillor AJ Southern says they event will give Richmond youth the chance to be recognised on an international scale. “We think it’d be an awesome thing to be a part of and we hope other students feel the same way,” says AJ. There will be a simple choreographed dance routine to learn before the record-breaking attempt, which will be taught on the day. This event is a part of Youth Week 2012 in the Tasman region, and is brought to you by the Tasman Youth Council. For more information, please contact Leigh-Ann Weaver on 027 389 4914.

When Marthé Nalder pulled up the mattress on her old bed last month she saw an “ugly” old blanket – her family saw an heirloom. During World War II Marthé lived on Queens Rd, above Port Nelson, and remembers her father and brothers leaving to help the war efforts. She also remembers being among those fighting their own battles back home, struggling to keep her family comfortable on a shoestring budget. As the war raged, farming produce was bought directly by the government and sold to the UK, causing wool prices in New Zealand to soar. The shortage meant that Marthé couldn’t afford to buy blankets, so in a show of good ole kiwi ingenuity, made her own – out of old socks. “We used to darn all our socks in those days,” says Marthé. “They were all wool. But when the darns start wearing out, it’s time the socks were tossed out. But the tops were alright, so I thought why couldn’t we have a warm cover?” Marthé sewed the tops of the socks together on an old hand-crank sewing machine to create the blanket that remained on her bed all through the war years, until her family could afford blankets again. The socks came from all over the community in blacks and navy blues, even grey squares with blue stripes from Nelson College. The blanket’s use since the war has been hardly glamorous, used as a mattress protector on top of her wire bed frame. It was only rediscovered when Marthé, with the help of her youngest son and his wife, took down her old bed. “We took the mattress off, and I said ‘Oh, there’s my sock blanket!’ And they said, ‘It’s an heirloom!’ They got quite excited about it. They suggested it go to

We hope these sessions will assist with this.

Grey Power president Gordon Currie says everyone over 50 years of age is eligible and benefits include discounts on various restaurants and shops and a monthly newsletter. “Joining Nelson Grey Power should be on the ‘to do’ list of every one turning 50 or if you are over 50 because we have had over 21 years of representing the issues facing the senior citizens. The benefits we lobby on affect the whole community so everyone benefits. “Another plus is the 174 businesses in Nelson and Tasman that offer Grey Power members a discount on products and services. Grey Power has so much to offer those over 50.” Gordon Currie. Gordon says Grey Power is also a lobby group and has helped force change for the better at both a local and national level. “If you want to get things done, either at local level or nationally you need to be in regular contact with the relevant elected representatives. We lobby local authorities and central government to ensure the needs of the senior community are met.” Anyone keen to find out more about Nelson Grey Power can visit its website at www.nelsongreypower.co.nz or pop in and visit them at Main Rd Stoke. Gordon says membership is easy and rewarding.

Review of Representation Arrangements for the 2013 Local Elections On 22 March 2012 the Tasman District Council reviewed its representation arrangements, and resolved that the following proposal apply for the Council and its Community Boards for the elections to be held on 12 October 2013:

• The Bay has a relatively small permanent population which swells considerably during the holiday season with people using the camping grounds and many of the baches that remain empty for most of the year;

Council Representation It is proposed that the Council will comprise 13 members elected from five wards, and the Mayor.

• Reducing the number of members will compromise the rural voice and increase the population per member to almost 5,000;

The five wards reflect the following identified communities of interest: • Golden Bay Ward • Motueka Ward • Moutere/Waimea Ward • Lakes/Murchison Ward • Richmond Ward The population that each member will represent is as follows: Ward

As prior stated however it was not until 1896 Jubilee Park became the home for rugby and over the years other sports such as cricket, tennis, football, athletics, rifle shooting, basketball, softball, badminton, the YMCA and likely some I have missed have all had their sports established on this very valuable perimeter of land. Over the years there had been considerable tree planting on the grounds and some very old trees still stand today. In 1940 to commemorate the 100 years from 1840 of early settlers a plague was erected and stands beneath one of the trees today in the vicinity of the public toilets on Gladstone road. For many years minimal buildings existed on the grounds, I well remember a long narrow green shed about where the gate entrance to the grounds is today, it was appropriately referred to as the “green tin shed.” A sports association was formed in 1948 following which, in about 1950, an all purpose building was built and named the Back row: E Beach (wing three quarter), R Little Esq (vice president), R Allport (wing three quarter). With Robyn Hollis

Hello again, I had a lovely time in Christchurch and I must say that the drive down and back was really spectacular. I have not done that trip in autumn for a long time and driving through the Lewis Pass and into north Canterbury was like driving through a series of calendar photos. The autumn colours are just superb. On returning after a week my own garden looked lovely also, with the autumn colours on the claret ash, maples, cornus and flowering cherry all trying to outdo each other for the brightest and boldest display. This is a really good time to visit the garden centres if you want to see what is available to give you great colour in autumn. It is also the best time to plant new trees and shrubs. A few suggestions are: Amelanchi-er candensis, Cornus florida – “Eddies White Wonder” and Cornus “Cloud Nine” are stunning in au-tumn, Cotinus coggygria – “Smoke Bush”, Fraxinus angustifolia “Raywoodii” – Claret ash, Gingko biloba, Gleditsia “Sunburst”, Liquidam-ber – “Lane Roberts” or “Gumball”, Nyssa sylvatica tricolour, Zelkova serrata – glorious gold foliage – and of course any of the Japanese maples. All these trees are suitable for the smaller to average size home garden. While I was away John had picked the crabapples from our little tree (A photo of which is featured this week.) The variety is “Wrights Scarlet” and I believe as well as looking stunning when covered in spring blossom and in bright red fruit in autumn, it makes the very best jelly. This very small tree needs to be supported as the crop is so heavy and so far I have

made 28 pots of jelly from this year’s fruit. I still have more to give away as I am all jellied out. “Coe’s Golden Drop” is another lovely crabapple to grow with bright gold fruit and I am also told it makes excellent jelly.

Tips

Thisks wee

• Weed and feed your lawn if you have not done this yet. It is a good idea to spike with a fork any areas that look damp or muddy and sprinkle some sand into the holes. This will assist with drainage over the winter period and should inhibit the growth

of hydrocotyl. • Lower your mower blades a touch for winter. • Stop mowing any parts of your lawn where bulbs are planted. • Keep taking semi-hardwood cuttings of shrubs like hebes, corokias, buxus, lavenders, and take pencil length cuttings of hydrangeas -they are almost guaranteed to root. • Cut back summer flowering clematis when they have fin-ished their autumn show (Nellie Moser is still looking lovely at present). Take them back by about 50 per cent and the smaller flowering clematis by about 75 per cent. • Time to sow a cover crop such as lupins,

I had the opportunity to look around some malls in Auckland this weekend and as I glanced around the different locations I felt such pride for our own special centre here at Fashion Island. The relaxed atmosphere - friendly locals stopping for a catch up, tourists enjoying our outside ambience and our cheerful teams make our centre in the heart of beautiful Nelson a special place. The store I would like to introduce to you today is Hartleys. Debbie and her team, work in a stunning store with labels such as Verge, Scarlet, Scope and Philosophy. The colors and textures for winter in these ranges are simply gorgeous and a great addition to your current wardrobe. If you are wanting advice on styling, this definitely is a team of fashion specialists. Come in and talk to Debbie and even treat yourself to a new makeover. Don’t forget to drop by Morrison street cafe and try their new winter menu. My favorite is the pad Thai, but I must try today’s soup, it smells delicious... I look forward to meeting you at my Fashion Island.

Q& A

This is to assist a lady named Bev who has inherited a quince tree. She has done all the obvious, jelly, paste etc but I came upon this recipe that she may find useful. How to poach quinces: Six quinces, 2 star anise, 1.5 litres water, 2 cloves, 1kg castor sugar, 1 stick cinnamon, 1 lemon thickly sliced. Preheat oven to 160 degrees C. Bring water, sugar, spices and lemon to the boil. Peel quinces and cut in half to remove cores. Place in a baking dish and cover with the simmering liquid. Poach gently in oven for 6-7 hours until the fruit is soft and deep red. Strain the syrup and reduce by 1/2. Pour over fruit in jars and seal. Lovely added to muffins, apple pie, in a flan, used with cheese etc. Happy gardening……

wheat, barley or mustard. Dig these in while soft or cut down and allow to rot to condition heavy soils. • It is also a good time to feed your soil as we have had some rain but the soil is not too soft to walk on. Add leaf mould, untreated wood ash, fish compost or emulsion, sheep pellets etc and a good hit of blood and bone with some dolo-mite lime. • Lay mulch around the garden now, before the soil becomes too wet and cold.

beat Nayland College in a pre-season match three weeks ago. But this was the same position both schools were in before Nayland shocked Waimea 17-15 at Jubilee Park last year. Can that happen again? Last year everyone in Richmond wondered how Waimea College could come within an inch of beating Nelson College and then lose to a win-less Nayland College just weeks later. This year Waimea College are ready to make sure the same mistakes don’t happen again. Waimea College lost to Nelson College 16-9 on the weekend, having held the lead for most of the first half courtesy of two Luca Roden penalties. But a try to Nelson College left winger Ricci Persico and three second half penalties by Mitchell Drummond means Waimea are still without a win this season. Club Day 26 May 2012

GO WANDERERS

South Street Gallery In 2011 Taylors Contracting Wanderers division two team won the championship and they are pictured here in celebratory mode, led by captain Scott Reed. Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers has proven across all grades that it is the dominant force in Nelson Bays Rugby right now. The Brightwater public and wider community will get their chance to watch most of the club’s teams live back to back when they hit the Brightwater Domain for this Saturday’s club day. It’s not just any old games either, with the fixtures throwing up some mouth-watering clashes. The Wanderers Club Day will be headlined by the Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers taking on ENZA Riwaka at 3pm. Following Saturday’s 30-13 loss to Wakatu Marist, The Wizards will be primed to get their already impressive season back on a positive note. Wan-

derers sit second on the Car Company division one table, only trailing the unbeaten Galbraith Group Nelson. But with New World Huia and Marist both winning on the weekend, maximum points against Riwaka could be crucial come playoff time. This match also doubles as a Bayleys Tasman Trophy Pool B game. The Tasman Trophy pits Nelson clubs against Marlborough clubs. This is the first time in five years that Wanderers have entered a team in the top local division and the club have managed to bring in some quality performers for the 2012 campaign. But even looking through the talent pool of ITM Cup regular Dan Perrin, former Tasman Makos centre Sione Holani and the hardworking Todd Bavin,

Wanderer’s Rugby

Club Day 26 May 2012 there are a number of youngsters excelling with more game time. Halfback Jackson Harvey has been a points machine with the boot, surpassing the 80 point tally for the season. Jackson is still at Nelson College but has made the step up to club rugby with ease. Tyler Kearns, Jesse Pitman, Trael Joass and Riley Johnston have already made their mark and can only improve in the years to come. Last year’s Car Company division two championship winning team will host a replay of last year’s final when they cross paths with Murchison at 1:15pm. Both teams come into the match without a loss to their name, although a draw two weeks ago with Stoke and a Jesse Pitman is pictured playing in last week’s smaller bonus point means Tasman Trophy match – this week they will take accumulation Wanderers will go into on ENZA Riwaka at 3pm.

the game second on the table. Number eight Stacey Lines has been the top performer for Wanderers this season. He is one of the competition’s top try scorers and will look to add to his individual tally on the weekend. The Wanderers third division team have the bye. But the day isn’t just about the senior members of the club; it’s all about the future Wanderers stars too. JAB Club Day will be held at Lord Rutherford Park. All of the club’s JAB teams will be playing at home so Saturday will be a good day to get out and support the youngsters at the club. All of the division one team will also be down there helping out. There will be a sausage sizzle and other refreshments will be on site throughout the day.

Marist find form against Wanderers Alan Davis Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers were still reeling from their drop goal loss against Nelson two weeks prior and a very slow start versus Awatere the week after that. And another slow start against a very committed Wakatu Marist team meant the Wanderers were going to have to produce something special on there beloved Wizard Garden to get the “W.” Penalties were traded early on and we all knew it was going to be a good old fashion arm wrestle. But mistakes were to be Wanderers down fall. A tight head on its own line was the first mistake resulting in a try by Marist number eight Joe Yalayala. Following the kick off another mistake led to a 60 metre effort by Marist open side Gary Redmond. Two quick tries took the wind out of the Wanderers pack and for the

first time all season they were playing catch up. Starring down the barrel of a possibly demoralising defeat the Wanderers side showed some real character to pull itself up of the floor and, despite some serious injuries, found itself within striking distance with twenty minutes to go. A great combination between the forward pack put lock Kurtis Bandy in the corner. However this ‘helter-skelter’ type of play was unsustainable and the visitors again scored though its bustling number eight pushing out to the final score of 30-13. To be honest, a fair result on the game. Bitterly disappointing for the Wanderers boys especially to perform like that in front of their home crowd. But they have one more chance to redeem themselves to their home fans this weekend. Get down and support your local lads take on ENZA Riwaka in Brightwater at 3pm.

Second div ready for finals replay Phillip Rollo Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers made sure they didn’t drop any points heading into this weekend’s 2011 final replay, after seeing off Collingwood 17-8 in Takaka on Saturday. The result means Wanderers will now head into this weekend’s game with Murchison at 1:15pm undefeated. Prop Nathan Taylor was the star of the show, giving Wanderers a clear edge at scrum time. Matt Keeble also stood out, bagging two tries, while blindside flanker Clinton Nott put in a tireless display in his first start of the season. Collingwood dominated both possession and territory in the opening stages of the match and carried that momentum right until half time. Wanderers were without Stacey Lines and Reece Horncastle, although both are expected to be back for this weekend.

But once the changes were rung at halftime, momentum swung back in favour of Wanderers. Team manager Kyle Paki-Paki says the side was not looking beyond the Collingwood clash but was excited to get their first shot at Murchison this weekend. “We just treated it like any other game. We obviously had a couple of players missing in Collingwood,” he says. First five-eight Gareth Palmer took a knock to the head and will likely sit out this weekend’s game. “That leaves a bit of a hole in our first five option.” But the side remains confident that they can overcome Murchison, as they did in the grand final of the Car Company division two last season. Both sides go into the clash undefeated and a win would likely see Wanderers head to the top of the table for the first time this year. “We have to be confident but they’re going to be firing on all cyclinders.”

Women stay top JAB Club Day photos Francey Kara

The Stoke community was blessed with good entertaining womens rugby on Saturday, but it was Waimea Old Boys that took home all the glory winning 36-19 at Ngawhatu. Waimea brushed off rivals Stoke early in the match with halfback Tash Kara feeding fullback Aleisha Hart a long pass which she ran in to score. From this point on Stoke were no longer a threat. Penny Stickney out smarted the opposition all through the game. Stoke did play good counteract rugby throughout the match with winger Stephy Omundsen dotting down twice for her team. Waimea’s front row put on tremendous driving forward all over the park. Comment from coach Brendan O’Connor was that the girls will go back and reset the course again ready for game two of the second round, he also said that he was highly impressed with all of his players. Try scorers were Penny, Charna Thompson, Nikita Lunjevich and Jess Foster. Aleisha scored two.

Good ole Fitzy would’ve been proud of skipper Luke Thelin’s opening and accurate speech: “To use a cliché - it was a of two halves.” Despite picking up a 34-22 victory over Stoke at ‘The Jungle’ on Saturday, Waimea Old Boys were behind the eight ball in the first half. Coach Wayne Bateman will have the tackle bags out this week, that’s for sure. However, Waimea Old Boys turned around a poor first half performance to take the win. Stern words were said at the break and the boys showed more discipline and structure to give them a 22-15 lead after 60 minutes. Stoke, never a team to say die, struck back with a converted try to lock it up at 22-22. Player coach Marc Hunter broke the deadlock when he barged over for a try before Mitchell Bateman sealed the victory with his second. Winger Lisette Paea had previously scored three tries to bag his first hat-trick of the season. They face Collingwood away this weekend.

Team work earns Garin Junior A the win Garin Junior A continued their impressive early season form when they beat Suburban Silver 21-17 in the Senior 8 game at Saxton Stadium on Saturday. The two teams could not be separated at the first break when the score was tied at 3 apiece. There were not a lot of missed shots, both teams were guilty of turning the ball over in the mid court. Garin had difficulty in adjusting to the different style of their opposites as Suburban was the first non-college team they have met. Garin have been training well under coach, Isla Ricketts who said her players are a focussed group who are passionate in what they are doing and what they want

to achieve. Garin were without key player Piki Boyles however they have a standout in playmaker Poppy Restieaux. Poppy played the first period at goal defence before moving to goal attack. Although her actual shooting average was not high it was her strong rebounding that gave her the second opportunity to convert. Poppy also took on a hefty workload through court where she pulled in several well timed intercepts. Poppy and shooter, Jess Brooks developed a lovely understanding to move the circle well. Wing attack, Rosette Hailes–Paku was dynamic in the middle and impressed as she worked to get on circle edge for the

optimum feeding position, while Olivia Wilbourne was a strong link at centre. Regina Tanoa made an impact at wing defence when she was introduced in the second quarter. Under 13 representative Kate Hand also had a stellar game, she was quick to the loose ball and when moved to the defensive circle she hunted for the intercept ball and quickly developed a formidable partnership with Lauren Wilkes. Lauren put in a player of the day performance at goal keep, she has an amazing lean and with more practise will get even more tip ball. Suburban began the season as a social team, however, they are all keen to learn so now train on a fortnightly basis. They are a relatively new team and their combinations are still developing.

Sports In BrIef FOOTBALL: Queen Street Pharmacy Richmond Athletic secured an important 3-2 victory over league leaders FC Nelson Sprig & Fern on Saturday. The result comes after Richmond had been beaten 3-0 by the side in the opening match of the season and just one week after losing 8-0 to AMI Nelson Suburbs in the Chatham Cup. Wiki Tafia, Daryl Fenemor and Joseph Gregan got on the score sheet. RUGBY LEAGUE: The Wanderers Wolves will face the Stables Richmond Rabbits at the Brightwater Domain this Saturday at 5pm, fresh from a big 42-10 win over the Tahunanui Tigers. The promising Wolves side hadn’t recorded a win after a horror start to their season, however they finally produced the

goods at Brightwater Domain on Saturday evening. The Tigers played the majority of the match with only 12 players. The top of the table Richmond Rabbits had the bye and will be well rested ahead of the local derby. SPORTS EXCHANGE: Garin College will host Queen Charlotte College this Thursday for its annual exchange. The day will begin with a peformnce by the school’s kapa haka group before netball, rugby, football and basketball games take place between the schools. The first XV and first XI games begin at 11:15am and would welcome the support of the public. ATHLETICS: Waimea College runner Tom Stringer has accepted scholarship to attend Louisiana Tech University. Tom will go to Ruston, Louisiana, directly after attending Camp America.

Resource Consent Applications

Notice of Intention to Change of Reserve Classifications

The Council has received an application for resource consent, which has been publicly notified in The Nelson Mail. The application and supporting information may be examined in any Council office. The full public notice may be found online at Council’s website www.tasman.govt.nz Any person may make a submission on the application in accordance with Section 96 of the Resource Management Act 1991. Submission forms are available from Council offices and Service Centres and on Council’s website. Please note that the following is an abridged advisory notice only.

Parts of Tapawera and Brightwater Recreation Reserves Pursuant to Section 24 of the Reserves Act 1977, the Tasman District Council gives notice of its intention to change the classification of portions of the Tapawera and Brightwater Recreation Reserves. The affected portions of the respective reserves are utilised for the following activities: Tapawera Recreation Reserve – Toy Library, and Playcentre Brightwater Recreation Reserve – Pinegrove Kindergarten It is considered desirable to change the classifications of the relevant portions of the reserves from Recreation Reserve to Local Purpose (Community Buildings) Reserves. This will more correctly align the current uses of the reserves to a more appropriate reserve classification. The intention is to have current uses reflected in the reserve classifications. This process is essentially an administrative action and there is no intention to change any current activities on these reserves. Recreation uses on these reserves will continue as they do now, and those portions of the reserves will retain Recreation Reserve status. Some car parking areas will be included in the change of classification process, but the car parks will remain available for all reserve users, as they are now. The change of classification for the Brightwater Reserve will be slightly larger than the land occupied by the Kindergarten at present. This is partly to minimise survey costs and partly to provide for potential expansion. For plans of the portions of the reserves intended for changes of classification, and to make further enquiries, please contact Robert Cant at Tasman District Council – robert.cant@tasman.govt.nz, Ph. 03 543 8400. Submissions or objections on the proposed classification changes should be made in writing, to the address below, and must be received no later than 4.00 pm on Monday 28 May 2012.
