CAROLS BY CANDLELIGHT: Miley Johnson, 7, and Harmony Hewison, 7, take part in Carols by Candlelight at Washbourn Gardens on Sunday night. The free event has been spreading the joy of Christmas for over 20 years now, this year attracting around 2000 locals. Carols by Candlelight featured a line up of musicians including a solo performance from Kieran O’Connor, the Waimea College night class choir Take a Chance, and Men in Accord, plus, mayor Richard Kempthorne as MC and plenty of Christmas tunes which had nearly everyone singing along. The event is organised and run by the Tasman District Council. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

Landowners help build cycle trail

When the Nelson Tasman Cycle Trust approached Lloyd and Paul Ewing about running the Tasman Great Taste Trail through their land at Quail Valley they agreed immediately because the trail “is such a bloody fabulous idea”. But the father-and-son owners of Ewing Poultry didn’t stop there.

They also started clearing a path and laying the base material for the 2km section of trail that runs through their free-range hen farm on the banks of the Wai-iti River. A keen recreational cyclist who has ridden the Otago Rail Trail, Ocean 2 Alps Trail and the coastal

section of the Tasman Great Taste Trail, Lloyd says it made sense for them to start the construction “because we already have the machinery and man-power on site.”

He estimates they have already spent about five weeks clearing and fencing their land and have about another 1000 man hours of work to go before the trust’s contractor can add the finishing touches. “The trust reckons we’re are doing about $50,000 worth of work

but that’s nothing in the big picture,” Lloyd says. “The trail is going to be such a good community asset - we can’t wait to see families biking along here and stopping for a picnic beside the river.”

Landowners help build cycle trail FROM PAGE 1

The trust’s project manager for the trail, Stuart Hughes says work on the section through Lloyd and Paul’s land signalled the start of the next stage of construction of the 175km trail. The coastal section from Nelson to Kaiteriteri was completed late last year and now the trust has sufficient funding to complete the 14.2km section from Wai-iti Domain to the Norriss Valley Picnic Area in this financial year. “There are five landowners in this section and they all allowed us to move fences and go through their land and we are really grateful for that. We have had such good support from the landowners like Nelson Forests and the Ewings as well as from the Tasman District Council and

Rata Foundation.” Stuart says the 1.35km ride through the disused Spooners Rail Tunnel will be a highlight of the next stage of the trail. Some work has already started on the approach to the tunnel and he expects it will be completed by June next year. “We have just let a contract for the construction of the section from Quail Valley Rd to Tunnel Rd so work will start soon,” Stuart says. “But Nelson Forests has already had Taylors Contracting doing some work forming a track approaching the tunnel.” Stuart says the tunnel will remain unlit and will be lined with reflectors. There will be a 50m long boardwalk through the middle of a creek leading up to the tunnel’s northern entranceway. However, Stuart says there are

still some speed bumps to be negotiated, including gaining access to land in the 6km section between Wakefield and Wai-iti Domain and securing funding for the final stages of the trail from Norriss Valley to Kohatu, Tapawera and then Riwaka. “There are a lot of landowners in that section (from Wakefield to Wai-iti Domain) so it will take a long time. The council and trust have also applied for government funding over the next four years so we’ll have to wait and see if that’s approved. “But we are making good progress and I think that the section from Wai-iti Domain to Norriss Valley will be a popular ride in its own right. I can see families driving out to Waiiti and then riding to Kohatu and back before the rest of the Lloyd, left, and Paul Ewing have been clearing their land for the Tasman trail is completed.” Great Taste Trail. Nelson Tasman Hospice received their Christmas present a little early this year when they were handed a cheque for $90,676.87. Andrew and Ange Douglas of Douglas Building Contractors embarked on the construction of a ‘House for Hospice’ earlier this year in June, the aim being to sell the house and property and give the proceeds to the Nelson Tasman Hospice. Andrew says the reason for undertaking the project in the first place was to give back to the community, while their choice of supporting the Nelson Tasman Hospice was an obvious one, thanks to the great work the organisation does for families and individuals in the area. Andrew says the amount they were able to hand over to hospice staff was “amazing.” “I don’t know if it’s something you could do all the time, but if in another three years time someone said ‘do it again,’ you’d probably get on board and have another crack at it. Copy Art brings some colour to Queen St

Santa, aka Alistair Ferguson, and his little Elf, Candy Gillies, with the presents donated by members of the Rotary Club of Richmond at their annual Christmas Dinner last week. Copy Art wanted to do something original for this year’s Decorate2Win competition and that paid dividends with their colourful, environmentally-friendly Christmas shop window winning first prize of $500 in cash and $1000 in advertising from Waimea Weekly. Copy Art was one of the many Richmond retailers entered in Richmond Unlimited’s Decorate2Win competition which is aimed at brightening up Richmond shops for Christmas. But the Queen St print and design business didn’t follow the usual blueprint of Santas, reindeer and snowflakes, instead creating a Kiwi Christmas theme with trees and stars using recycled paper. “All the Christmas decorations are based around snow but we don’t get snow at Christmas here so we wanted to try and do something different,” Copy Art’s Jamie Thomas says. “We also wanted to make something that tied in with the shop so we used recycled, reused and repurposed paper from misprints, off-cuts and artist’s sample strips - it’s very environmentally friendly.”

Copy Art’s Jamie and Karyn Thomas, left, Richmond Unlimited’s Kim Quint, second right, and Waimea Weekly’s Sue Davies outside Copy Art’s prize-winning Christmas shop window on Monday. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. Although Jamie came up with the theme for their Christmas shop window, he can’t take any credit for creating the spectacular display, leaving that to his “very artistic” wife Karyn. “It took about a month and half to make,” Karyn says. “I enjoyed it but I think I managed to get more glitter on me than the stars - I’m still finding bits of glitter on me.” Karyn says the trees needed three layers of paper to be rigid enough to stand up. She also matched the colour of the trees

and stars with the colours in their Copy Art signage. Richmond Unlimited’s Kim Quint says the judges were impressed by Copy Art’s originality. “It’s a bright and colourful display and it was different,” Kim says. “We also liked the way they brought in the colours of their logo into the decorations.” Kim says Stitchcraft won second prize of $500 in cash while the Hospice Shop won the People’s Choice vote for third and $250 in cash.

Ranzau School principal Dave Sampson is convinced the only way of reducing the risk of children being hit by a car outside the school is to install a flashing variable 40kmh sign. The Tasman District Council has ranked all 36 schools in the district in terms of traffic safety issues for children and Dave says he is not surprised that Ranzau is the worst. The rankings were part of a council report investigating the possibility of installing 40kmh variable speed signs outside schools across the district. “We are situated on a 70kmh part of Ranzau Rd for a start and that immediately puts our children at greater risk of serious injury than schools on 50kmh roads,” Dave says. “Parents also have to park in the Hope Community Church across the road which means 80 per cent of parents and children cross Ranzau Rd twice a day so we are very, very keen for council to put 40kmh variable signs outside the school.” Dave says council has taken some steps to improve traffic safety for the children, including extending the yellow (no parking) lines outside the school to increase visibility. A fence has also been erected to create a barrier between the church and the road but Dave says the biggest danger is still the speed. “It’s been well researched that a car travelling at 70kmh does a lot more damage than a car travelling at 40kmh - it’s the difference between a fatality and a serious injury - so we need those signs.” Dave has been in regular contact with council about installing a variable speed sign and although he is encouraged council is investigating their use around the district, he says they need them “before anything happens.” Dave says the variable speed signs have been installed outside many of the school’s in Nelson “where they are very effective” and he wants Tasman to follow their lead. Council is also considering static 40kmh signs which cost around $8000 to install compared to $15,000 for flashing variable speed signs but Dave says that would be a waste of money. “The variable, flashing signs really catch your eye - they are much more effective. I hope council doesn’t make a decision on this issue based on finances - it would be terrible if they did that and then a child got injured.” Dave is also concerned that police recorded some “pretty frightening speeds” outside the school during a speeding blitz earlier this year. “I asked them what they found and they said ‘you don’t want to know’. There is a serious issue with speeding outside the school so that makes it even more dangerous.” The council report showed that Hope School on Paton Rd is ranked third worst in terms of speed environment, parking facilities and average daily traffic counts. Dovedale School was fifth, Mapua eighth and Mahana tenth. At the other end of the scale, Waimea Intermediate and Waimea College were two of the lowest ranked schools at 34 and 35 respectively while Garin College was ranked 28. Although council road safety coordinator Krista Hobday says in her report that more data needs to be collected, a number of schools around the district meet the New Zealand Land Transport Agency criteria for the installation of variable school zones.

Hail hits pipfruit: The apple industry will need at least a week to assess the cost of damage to Nelson growers hit by hail on Wednesday, says Pipfruit New Zealand chief executive Alan Pollard. “Our Nelson apple growers have suffered significant losses from the hail, but our experience last year shows growers can still achieve a high quality export crop off an orchard struck by hail.”

Councillors sack Davy: Eric Davy has been ousted as chair of the regional transport committee after his fellow councillors voted 7-6 against him. The Notice of Motion to remove Cr Davy was moved by councillor Luke Acland, arguing that Cr Davy told councillors that he wasn’t involved in the New Zealand Transport Agency investigations into the proposed Southern Link, when he was. Deputy chair Ruth Copeland has been promoted Eric Davy. to chair of the regional transport committee. Eric Davy says he was not contacted by those moving the Notice of Motion and found it to be an “absolute surprise. And quite disgraceful that it has been done so.” Those who voted in favour of the notice were: Luke Acland, Matt Lawrey, Pete Rainey, Mike Ward, Ruth Copeland, Kate Fulton and Brian McGurk.

Christmas dinner for 100 'makes me happy'

Kate Russell

The festive spirit is alive and well in Stoke this year, where up to 100 people will enjoy a free Christmas dinner, thanks to Elim Christian Centre and Crusoe’s Cafe. The church has been actively involved in helping out families at Christmas time over the years - but this year they wanted to have a bigger impact. “We recognise there is lots of stress at this time of the year and we are aware of families who struggle through the Christmas season,” says the church’s Pastor, Richard Batchelar. The church usually puts together ‘Christmas boxes’ for up to 10 nominated families, which included everything for a Christmas meal and presents for the children. But this year they wanted to “think bigger.” “We wanted to do a Christmas dinner, but the kitchen at Elim is not equipped for large meals,” says Richard. “Then we approached Crusoe’s to see if we could host the dinner there. We thought they fitted perfectly as they have such a generous heart for people and the community.” Crusoe’s Cafe owners Rami and Anat Edwy were more than happy to help out. Coming from a small community in Israel, they say it’s in their culture to give back to

They have opened their cafe for Christmas lunch every year in the four years they have been in Nelson. “Christmas is not about the money - it’s about family,” says Anat. “It makes me happy.” Richard’s wife Maria says that they have been inviting nominations of suitable families or individuals from local schools

and community-help organisations. So far, they have 70 definite attendees, which includes 15 families, and they have the ability to go up to 100 people. There will be twice as many children as adults so there will be plenty of kid’s activities and a bouncy castle for them to enjoy. Volunteers from the church, including Richard and Maria’s children, will be help-

ing out on the night, with more behind the scenes - organising and wrapping personalised presents for children, baking and making gift baskets for the families to take home. “People in the church have really given generously,” says Richard. Local businesses are also getting on board, donating vouchers and products. “The local businesses have been so supportive,” says Maria. “It’s exciting to see the community heart.” Rami says he has approached five local suppliers to donate food for the dinner, and all of them were willing to give even more than they needed. Maria says it’s “really exciting” to see a little idea turn into something so big. “We’re learning as we go, but it is proving to be a great success. It just makes you think that you don’t always see the reality of what people are going through. We can’t change people’s circumstances, but we can give them a momentary escape from that.” “Some of these families have six or seven children and one lady couldn't stop crying, she was so excited to be coming. When you hear the stories of some families - that is why we do it.” If you or your business would like to donate to the Elim Community Christmas Dinner, please contact Maria Batchelar on 027 533 5474.

Ulysses Toy Run, Wednesday, December 9: Thanks to the efforts of the thirtieth annual Ulysses Toy Run, the Salvation Army estimates around 200 toys were collected for distribution to families this Christmas. Just a thought... Seeing the huge crowds at the Richmond Mall this week doing their Christmas shopping reminded me of a story of a typical husband and wife who were shopping at the mall when the wife discovered that her husband was nowhere to be seen. Upset, she called him on her cell phone to see where he was. He replied ‘do you remember the jewellers we went to a few years ago where you fell in love with that beautiful diamond necklace that we couldn’t afford and I told you that one day I would get it for you?’ The wife choked up, started to cry, said yes

Richmond church granted $100,000 Rātā Foundation announced on Tuesday grants totalling $300,000 have been approved to two Nelson organisations for building projects, including Church on the Hill in Richmond’s new community hall. The foundation approved $100,000 towards Church on the Hill’s project to replace their existing hall with a new community centre. It also approved $200,000 for the Nelson Tasman Housing Trust for building new affordable and energy efficient houses. The Church on the Hill project will provide the wider community with a well-planned, multi-purpose facility, which will also allow for a 200 seat auditorium which can be used as a performing arts centre, chief executive of the Rātā Foundation Louise Edwards says. They have collaborated with their wider community to ensure the new facility plugs specific gaps in the current market around availability for venues which meet a wide range of use, she says. Louise says the trustees were impressed with the prior work around fundraising the Church on the Hill had already undertaken. “They have spent the last ten years raising a significant amount of money to complete this project which will be of huge benefit to the Richmond community.” Rātā Foundation has a long history of supporting housing in Nelson and has partnered with The Nelson Tasman Housing Trust on social housing previously, as well as the recent Warmer Healthier Homes project. She says funding for this project will assist The Nelson Tasman Housing Trust to kickstart the regeneration of the Orchard Estate in Stoke, which entails building six new affordable and energy efficient houses on land which previously contained three State houses. “The Trust has a proven track record in social housing and this project marks the first stage of what is envisaged as a rolling programme of regeneration to turn around the Orchard Estate and eventually produce a more balanced community with mixed tenure, while creating community development opportunities.” “By helping to create community conditions which support the Nelson region’s most vulnerable people and families in critical ways we increase our chances to make a real difference to their future outcomes and the outcomes of our community as a whole,” she says.

I remember that shop. He replied, ‘well, I’m in the pub next door’ Christmas time is a time of giving, which should not surprise us because generosity is at the heart of the Christian faith. The reason we give gifts is to acknowledge that Jesus birth 2000 years ago was the greatest expression of generosity ever given to mankind. Giving is God’s heart and it is reflected in everything he does and is highlighted in probably the best known verse in the bible - God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have

FOR ALL ENGINEERING WORK

The rain may have meant a change of venue for the annual Glo lites event, but it did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of local residents who got into the Christmas spirit at Brightwater Hall. Hello all, There are a few brief items to bring to your attention. The Tasman District Council has now released its future growth plan for Brightwater. A plan showing the proposal is on our notice board in Ellis St. More details are available from the TDC office and on their website. The recent road resealing in Bryants Road, Charlotte Lane, and part of Waimea West Road did not go well and showed up some deficiencies in the carrying out of the work. Following a meeting with some of the affected residents of Waimea West Road, the Council will amend its procedures to ensure affected residents are notified, put up temporary speed restrictions and ensure the sweeping away of surplus chip. The Council has approved of four restricted carparks (maximum parking 15 minutes) outside the shops in Ellis St. The signs will be

going up early in the New Year. Also, in the New Year signs will be going up across the whole length of Ellis Street restricting speed to 40 kph. The time difference from the present limit is 15 seconds if you are travelling the whole length of the street. A few extra seconds will make this street safer for all users. Would all cyclists please refrain from riding on footpaths as this is not only illegal, but dangerous to all. The next meeting of our community association will be on Monday 8 February, 2016 7.30 pm at the staffroom at Brightwater School. All that remains is to wish all the residents of Brightwater a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the Brightwater Community Association. Andy McQueen, Chairperson. Plans are well underway for next year’s Brightwater Wine and Food Festival, so make sure to mark Sunday 21 February, 2016 in your calendar for all day entertainment, fantastic food and award winning wines and beers. Girl Guiding in Brightwater and Wakefield I would like to thank everyone who has supported Girl Guiding in the villages over the past seven years of my tenure as District Co-ordinator. We have really appreciated your support, especially during our biscuit campaigns and activities. Our Brightwater Guides have been very ably run by Josie Macdonald (a very special lady!) over the past three years. Josie is retiring as of the end of term 4. Twin Peaks thanks her and the Mum’s that have helped over the period of Josie’s leadership, especially Lynley who has been a great support to Josie. We wish Jorja all the very best at Jamboree and know she will have a great time and enjoy meeting Guides from all over New Zealand and overseas. Thank you sincerely to all in Brightwater for your fundraising support for our Jamboree Girls in Twin Peaks District, especially the Sprig and Fern quiz teams. Our Wakefield girls, both Pippins and Brownies, have had a great leader in Veronique Law over many years, especially the past two years when she has run both units

on her own. She has done a fantastic job and we are really sad to lose her also at the end of Term 4. My thanks to all the super parents who have supported these two units, especially Lucy who has been a great help to Veronique. As we have had no volunteers to take on these three units, sadly they will close unless anyone comes forward between now and the February re-start. Should there be any willing helpers, please contact Kim Mundy on: kim@mundy.co.nz or 0211626733. If you are out there, I know Kim will be pleased to hear from you! It’s extremely sad that a very long era of Guiding in the villages might come to an end, and I sincerely hope there are a few community minded people out there who will enable Guiding to continue in this area. Sue Burrowes. District Coordinator 2008 – 2015.

When the Warehouse called for nominations for their “Christmas Goodie” it was a ‘no brainer’ to put her forward as a nominee. They agreed with us that Wendy is indeed a ‘Goodie’ and she won the Christmas Goodie award.

14 WEDNESDAY 23 December 2015

SPORT Summer has arrived, and hopefully the strong winds we have been getting will die down so we can get out and do some more fishing over the holiday period. Water temperature is still rising and there are plenty of fish in the bay, however the larger snapper will be on their way out soon, but there are plenty of school snapper still being caught in shallow waters off Rabbit Island. One of the tricks to successful fishing is the use of fresh or live bait. Make sure you take a sabiki rod on board to entice some of the many small kahawai that are infesting the waters at the moment. Sabikis are an effective way to catch your fresh bait which larger species like snapper cannot resist. It also takes the hassle out of taking frozen bait and wasting what isn’t used. Set up your burley trail first, then get the sabikis in the wa-

ter, baiting them will help. Try for six fresh kahawai or jack mackerels, cut them into chunks which can then be put on your larger hook or flasher rig. Using lighter gear and stray-lining directly into the burley trail will also increase your chances of catching more fish. By the time you read this, Santa will almost be ready to deliver your new fishing rods so you can get out and enjoy them over Xmas holidays. There will be a lot of extra people on the water, so stay safe, wear your life jackets and enjoy some great summer fishing in Nelson. Our next Dawnbreakers event is going to be held at Rabbit island on Sunday January 24. If you are interested in attending or joining our club, please contact us at mail@ dawnbreakers.co.nz. Merry Xmas to you and your families.

Life was a beach at Brightwater on Sunday when 25 teams from Nelson, Christchurch and Blenheim enjoyed hot, windless conditions at the Brightwater Vineyard Beach Volleyball Classic. The top Blenheim pairing of Tristan Hegglun and Sebastian Lock prevailed in the men's draw, beating Richmond's Tane MacDonald and Matt Heyward in the final 2-1. Tane and Matt made a good start taking the first set 20-22, before just losing the second 21-19 and third 15-5. However, the final and deciding set was all tied up at 5-5 before Tristan seized control, winning 10 consecutive points and the game with a run of pressure serving. Tane and Matt had earlier beaten Christchurch pair Sam Ryburn and Paul Foster 2-0 in the semifinal. In the women's draw, Christchurch's Jess Rathgen and Kim Smith secured their second consecutive New Zealand Challenger series title, beating Nelson's Dayna Whiting and Morgan Hendrickson 2-0. Dayna and Morgan had earlier won their semifinal against the Waimea College year 10 pair of Harriet Ogilvie and Flo MacIntyre 2-1, who had a huge upset win in the quarters over Nelson's Tali Uia and Nadja Baden. Tahuna beach plays host to the next New Zealand Challenger event on January 3.

New Zealand Football says seven of the clubs involved in the current eight-team competition will continue in the expanded league, with Auckland City FC, Waitakere United, Hawke’s Bay United, Team Wellington, Wellington Phoenix, Canterbury United and Southern United all at the start line for next season.

The region’s under 20 football team signed off its season – and its existence – in style on Sunday, but for many football fans the best is yet to come. Nelson Marlborough Falcons beat rivals Canterbury United 5-2 at Trafalgar Park, bringing a close on its successful four year history, the highlight, of course, winning the ASB National Youth League in 2014. And while the Falcons brand is grounded, the team will carry on under the Tasman United banner, which will also incorporate a full senior mens team in the top national football

competition for the first time since the early 1990s. The franchise bid from Nelson Bays Football was granted a two year licence to compete in the ASB Premiership and the ASB Youth League from next season. Confirmation came through last Wednesday after months of work behind the scenes in preparing the bid. Tasman United will be one of ten teams to compete in next year’s expanded ASB Premiership. The other new teams to be added are Hamilton Wanderers and Eastern Suburbs AFC. Nelson Bays Football say they’re delighted that they’ve

Teen triathlete aiming for the top Promising Nelson triathlete Hayden Squance is getting help from the best in the business with former national triathlon coach Greg Fraine and Tasman Swim Club coach Andy Adair combining to take the young star’s performances to the next level. And it seems to be working just fine with Hayden producing an impressive win in the Nelson Triathlon Club’s sprint distance race at Rabbit Island on Sunday. Hayden won in 1hr 6min 26sec, completing the swim, that was a little longer than the designated 750m, in 15min 14sec before riding the 20km draft-legal bike leg on his own in 18min 23sec and the 5km run in 18min 23sec. Hayden has made a quantum leap in his swimming this season after joining Andy’s elite squad at Richmond Aquatic Centre and now he is hoping to make the same gains in his running. However, the 17-year-old knows it’s going to take considerably longer for Greg’s input to produce the run speed he needs to compete at the top level. “I’ve been doing a lot more training in the pool with Andy and bit of technique work and it’s all really helping. Greg’s been working on my running technique but it’s going to take time to get it right. “Greg’s got me doing six sessions a week on my feet but not necessarily running. I’ve been doing drills and gym work as well - it’s an amazing opportunity to work

with someone like him.” Interestingly, Greg, who was a Commonwealth Games medal winning and Olympic cyclist, says he hasn’t needed to work too hard on Hayden’s cycling. “He’s got the first two disciplines sorted,” Greg says. “He’s bikes very well and has a good tactical understanding and he has a great attitude - he listens and learns and trains hard. “But his run needs improving. We’ve had to deconstruct his running technique and start again it’s a long term project but it will give his running a solid platform.” Although Hayden’s running is still a work in progress, he proved too fast in Sunday’s race with wellperformed Christchurch triathlete and coach John Newsom finishing second in 1hr 9sec 5min. New Caledonia’s Jeremy Broutte was third in 1hr 11min 34sec while Jon Linyard was fourth in 1hr 12min 46sec. Waimea College teacher Jane Orbell prevailed in a close women’s race, winning in 1hr 20min 57sec with Carol Cooper second in 1hr 22min 1sec and Georgina Kydd third in 1hr 22min 42sec. Hayden’s father Charlie won the duathlon option which started with a 3km run in 1hr 10min 4sec. Derrick Murray won the short triathlon option in 43min 10sec with Lauren Penney second in 45min 57sec. The Nelson Triathlon Club’s next race is at Rabbit Island on January 3.
