Stagnant smelly water, flooded tents, bugs and mozzies, and septic tank overflows may be the making of camping memories, but certainly not fond ones. The Tasman District Council-owned McKee Recreation Reserve has been a favourite, family-friendly camping ground enjoyed by thousands for decades. Michael Jacobs and his family from Greymouth have been camping there every summer for the past 28 years, but this year may be their last. “We’ve always found this a great place, but this year has been nothing short of a disgrace,” he says. Heavy rains resulted in severe flooding, leaving large areas of the camping ground unusable and campers struggling to dry out their belongings. “We’re from the Coast so we’re used to a bit of rain,” says Michael. Despite no rain over the past week, campers say that some areas were still up to their knees, attracting insects and bugs. A 250-metre clay bund was built less than 10 years ago to reduce the chance of flooding into the reserve during a high tide storm event, but Michael says that without any drainage the water sits there becoming stagnant and smelly. “It needs to be drained but the council doesn’t seem to want to do anything about it. We had to go and hire a pump for two days.”

rains, but there was no drainage,” Jason says. “If you had a tent, you were buggered.”

Council spokesperson Chris Choat says, “it flooded due to unusually heavy rain, and the camp also receives storm water

from the road/cliffs above.” “High tides saturated the ground

A chemical spill at Brightwater School pool saw seven units respond. Photo: Steve Page.

Chemical spill shuts pool Judene Edgar Brightwater School pool was shut down for two days last week after a chemical spill resulted in the pool being significantly overdosed with chlorine. According to eye witnesses, seven units responded to the incident including three fire trucks, two ambulances, and a hazardous materials appliance, after the caretaker reported the accident.

Alex Theobald from the Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade says that the incident was contained to within the pool and that no one was affected. “It was a bad mix of chlorine chemicals, but it’s been resolved with no issues,” says Alex. “It’s a lengthy process of trying to dilute and make the area safe.” While the presence of seven units caused some concern, Richmond fire chief Craig Piner says that it’s

“standard procedure for a chemical call-out”. Brightwater School principal Gerald Baldwin was happy with the responsiveness from all concerned. “The caretaker followed correct procedures in contacting the fire service and the school thanks all involved for their prompt response and very thorough handling of the situation,” says Gerald.

and the low nature of the land prevents the flooded areas from draining away quickly. As a result, ponding occurred for some days.” But Jason doesn’t think that it’s good enough. “They’ve earned significant money from that site but never reinvested back into it.” “She’s pretty had-it – the drive itself has never been touched and, with so many people using it, I don’t know why council has never put anything back into it.” Fellow camper Rachael Halsam says that the water was so deep that children were able to kayak in the reserve. However, to add insult to injury, one of the septic tanks over-flowed due to a broken pump. “It’s bordering on a health hazard to the kids,” she says. The pump has been replaced and

Chris says that council will be assessing the camp ground in April when it is at its quietest. “We will be making some changes to the grounds to minimise the flooding experienced in recent years.” However, Michael says that it shouldn’t be camper’s responsibility to hire pumps and that, based on council’s lack of action, they may not be back. “We’ve had some great times here and great memories,” he says. “We come with our children, grand-children and cousins, but if they don’t do anything about it we could have the same next year.” Chris says that the campers will be reimbursed in-kind through a reduction in their camp fees to the amount of hireage they have paid, however, to date, Michael says that the only offer he’s received is one nights’ free accommodation.

Paid parking up for debate Judene Edgar Council may have opened a can of worms by putting paid parking back on the agenda, but Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne is confident that if they have, Richmond residents will tell them loud and clear. Increasing pressure on parking in the Richmond and Motueka town centres has spurred the development of a draft parking strategy to manage demand over the next 10 years. “Pressure on prime parking space is growing,” he says. Richmond Unlimited chairperson Marina Buonocore says that she is disappointed with the strategy and that it fails to offer any real plan to deliver additional parks or efficiencies. “It outlines the different needs and problems in Richmond and Motueka, yet it treats them the same with regards to possible solutions,” she says. While it provides for increased efficiency of current car parks, more time restrictions, improved enforcement, and better signage and wayfinding, Marina says that this should be ‘business as usual’ for the council. Marina is also concerned that one of the medium-term solutions offered is to “introduce a user-pays system”. “Free parking is a key point of difference for Richmond and the rest of Tasman,” Marina says.

Councillor Kit Maling says that he isn’t convinced that paid parking is the solution. “I don’t think we’re at the point of needing parking meters – I believe time limits are working, but some residential streets may need parking restrictions also,” Kit says. While Richmond councillors acknowledged the increasing number of concerns being raised by residents, Council’s activity planning advisor Drew Bryant says, “we understand it will push more all-day parking into residential areas”. However, in the strategy it’s made clear that, “providing parking for a family’s home is the responsibility of the household, not the Council”. Councillor Dana Wensley is

hoping that the public might provide some ideas around active transport and pedestrian and cycle-friendly solutions. “Parking is an issue and we need to have some blue skies thinking about what to do in the future, and the community needs to be part of that.” Councillor Trevor Tuffnell agrees. “Going forward, we do have a serious problem and maybe we need to think outside of the square because more and more car parks isn’t the solution.” The Richmond and Motueka town centre parking strategy is open for consultation until February 23, 2018. The strategy is available at Richmond and Motueka council offices or at tasman.govt.nz/feedback.

Rain washes out summer events Brittany Spencer Reporter

brittany@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Nelson has always boasted a summer full of outdoor events, but with this year’s wet weather several have quite literally been wash-outs. Tahuna Summer Sounds, Movies Al Fresco, Summer Shakespeare, and the Tasman Skatepark Tour have all fallen victim to recent rain bombs. The beach vibes of the first Tahuna Summer Sounds were completely washed away as the January 12 event was postponed until the next day and then cancelled, in the face of torrential rain and a severe weather warning issued by Metservice. “It has definitely been wetter than the last two or three years, and the Friday and Saturday before last were really horrible,” says organiser Axel de Maupeou. “Because we are in a region where summer is quite prevalent and lasts quite some time, it came as a little bit of a disappointment, but that is the nature of outdoor events.” And the data seems to back it up. Niwa last week reported that Nelson and Tasman had the wettest soil in the South Island

compared to this time last year. Two weeks ago, Niwa also released a report declaring that the region had the most sunshine hours in the country during 2017. However, principal scientist of forecasting, Chris Brandolino, said that “the theme for 2017 was extremes”. In addition to several extreme events across New Zealand, “46 locations recorded record or near record April rainfall”. Axel says the weather is not something you can control so everyone takes a risk when they put on an outdoor event. “When it pays off it pays off really well, but when it doesn’t work there isn’t much you can do.” However, Axel says last Friday’s Tahuna Summer Sounds had perfect weather and extra spots were made for several artists in the first event’s line-up who missed out, giving them the chance to perform under the sunshine as originally intended. Several of the annual Summer Movies Al Fresco screenings were forced indoors for the first time in the event’s history due to the wettest summer that organiser Antony Hodgson has seen. With five viewings cancelled due to weather in the first two weeks of the event it is already the

Washbourn Garden’s screening of The Wizard of Oz was moved indoors to the Richmond Town Hall. Photo: Judene Edgar. most screenings cancelled in one summer, with the previous worst just three. “This has been our biggest year of rain in a very long time for the summer movies.” Antony says having to cancel

screenings was very disheartening but, thankfully, organisers were able to get creative and find indoor venues so people could still enjoy their summer movies. For Summer Shakespeare their production of Twelfth Night went

on with a last-minute rain venue being organised at The Granary at Founders Park. Cast member Laura Irish has been involved in outdoor theatre shows at Fairfield House for eight years. This year was the first she could remember where the rain had a big impact. “It’s a shame because the cast has all worked so hard to put on a great show. But we are looking forward to the rest of the tour which takes us to Richmond and Motueka. Hopefully the weather plays nice.” The region’s skaters have also missed out with two of the bigger Tasman Skatepark Tour events being cancelled due to the rain. “The weather has definitely affected us,” says Sport Tasman recreation assistant Seth Watson. “We’ve made it to the little skateparks but Brightwater and Motueka were both cancelled and we had to do our event in Tapawera really quickly because it started to rain.” Despite having to call off the Brightwater event last year, Seth says this Skatepark Tour has been the wettest one yet. “The kids miss out, you can’t skate, scooter or BMX on a wet park, but they made the most of the time they did have.”

limited-edition bauble in support of the work of hospice. Between the Nelson and Richmond Farmers stores, $22,366 was raised, nearly $5000 more than last year. All of the funds donated go straight to Nelson Tasman Hospice. Nelson Tasman Hospice chief executive Frans Dellebeke said he would like to thank each and every person in the community who chose to donate during the campaign. “We

are so thankful to everyone who has supported the Trees of Remembrance – it’s an important annual fund-raiser for us – helping us to continue to deliver our free-of-charge services to our region. I’d like to thank the Farmers staff who encouraged their customers to contribute, especially during such a busy time in the stores.” Financial support from the community is an essential part of hospice funding.

Rotary and playcentre host family fair Unable to host the event in 2017, Richmond Playcentre is looking forward to this year’s Washbourn Gardens Family Fair, which has been made possible after some much-appreciated support from Nelson West Rotary Club. The fair is a major fundraiser for the early childhood centre and rotary members Murray Butler and Shellz Flemming say they are happy to help such a great community cause.

“We encourage people to come along and enjoy the sunshine in the gardens and make the most of the many stallholders,” says Richmond Playcentre member Crysal Olds. “One of the acts we’ve got lined up is Jane Pascoe Dance, who will be leading a session for three to six-year olds, and of course there’ll be face painting.” The playcentre will also be showcasing some of its resources including music and books, and will have a bake

Southern Link consultation closes soon Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese is imploring people to provide feedback on the Nelson City Council’s Draft Nelson Regional Land Transport Plan if they want to see the Southern Link progressed. Other key projects within the Plan are safety and resilience improvements to the SH 6 Blenheim to Nelson route, and investigations into improving the Stoke South/Richmond network alongside Tasman District Council and the Transport Agency. The document also includes proposed changes to public transport. The Plan is available at council libraries and service centre, or can be found online on www.ncc. govt.nz. Submissions close February 9. Outdoor Summer Shakespeare comes to Richmond Nelson Summer Shakespeare’s popular Twelfth Night production will be at the Washbourn Gardens and Riverside Community this week. After needing to use wet-weather venues for almost half of the Nelson shows, organisers are looking forward to some sunny weather for this week’s shows. The shows start at 6.30pm on Thursday 25 and Friday 26 at Washbourn Gardens, and Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 at Riverside Community. Pay as much as you decide. Go to nelsonshakespeare.nz for details. Police issue telephone scam warning Police have issued a scam warning after they received two reports from the public that a man had called them claiming he was from a government department and requesting their personal information. Police are making enquiries into the reported incidents and encourage anyone else who has received similar calls to contact them. They advised that government agencies will never ask for bank account or credit card details, and if in doubt, hang up. Anyone who believes they are a victim of a crime, in person or online, should report the matter to their local Police. Netsafe also provides helpful information and advice about online safety. The fair will be held on Nelson Anniversary Day, Monday, January 29, from 9am until 2.30pm, at Washbourn Gardens. If wet, the fair will be postponed until Tuesday, February 6. There is no entry fee for the event.

This year the show will be held on Saturday and Sunday, January 27 and 28, in the Brightwater Hall and everyone, society member or not, is encouraged to bring their flowers along. There are a wide range of sections available to enter into including Gladioli, Dahlias, cut flowers, roses, container grown plants, fruit and vegetables and school children’s classes. Judging begins at 11am on

Saturday morning so make sure you have your flowers in the hall on Friday evening or Saturday morning before 10am. “The Brightwater Horticultural Society has a friendly, country atmosphere and we like cups of tea and cakes,” says society president Arch Crerar. “It’s a lot more laid back than some groups and we’re here to foster the growing of flowers. We’re trying to keep the society and the show running and to do that we need more members, especially younger members.” For Arch and Richmond grower Mark Papps, tending their flower gardens is a form of stress relief. Expeditions to Antarctica, rafting trips to South America, and rubbing shoulders with Vikings are the sort of adventures that people dream of, but for former Nelson College physics teacher Des Duthie, his greatest adventure is teaching. While still at High School Des knew that he wanted to be a teacher, but some amazing opportunities along the way have seen him on many exciting adventures that all add to his unique teaching style and knowledge. After leaving the University of Natal in South Africa with a Bachelor of Science majoring in physics and mathematics, he was offered the opportunity to join an expedition to Antarctica as a physicist. “I had the most amazing job,” he says. “I’d go out every night during winter and watch the sky and use a light-sensitive camera to record the aurora lights.” After completing his PhD based on his Antarctica research, Des got the opportunity to join a rafting trip from South Africa to South America. Unfortunately, they only lasted three weeks at sea but that didn’t stop him.

morning,” he says. “I just had a magnificent time.” While the relaxed lifestyle was a clear highlight of his time there, another highlight was taking in his telescope so that the students could watch Venus transit across the sun, as first predicted by astronomers over 150 years ago. But Des says that while he was ready to leave full-time teaching behind, he wasn’t ready to leave teaching altogether. “I love the challenge of explaining difficult concepts and ideas to children and helping them use that understanding to learn further,” Des says. “Once they start understanding they start to enjoy learning and their confidence builds.” Settling back in Richmond, Doc D now runs a tutoring service for intermediate and secondary school students in maths, physics, chemistry and English. He says that throughout his 30 years of teaching he often found that students would get help “too late”, often just before exams, whereas usually it’s better to have on-going support. To find out more about Doc D’s tutoring, email desduthie@gmail.com or phone him on 022 695 4835.

Viv is helping organise the Yesteryear Show alongside fellow Nelson Vintage Engine and Machinery Club member Baden Biggs. Only 16 models of Nuffield tractors were produced, but thanks to Viv there will be at least one of each tractor there on the day including his 1965 BMC mini tractor. “This isn’t a real tractor,” scoffs Viv. “I don’t like to be seen sitting on it.”

Got some news?

Seventy years of the humble Nuffield tractor is to be celebrated at the annual Yesteryear Show at Higgins Heritage Park this weekend. Developed by England’s Morris Motors in response to a post-World War 2 need for farm machinery and export products, they were produced from 1948 until 1969, when the company was purchased by Leyland. Initially all the Nuffield tractors produced were allocated to the United Kingdom to help increase crop production due to the post-war food shortage. After this, they began exporting them worldwide. “My father bought one in 1953,” says Stanley Brook farmer Viv Barker. “They were great tractors. I spent my youth on the fields on them.” And not only is Viv still on the same farm he grew up on, but he’s also still got Nuffield tractors. “I don’t really know how many I have,” he says. “More than 10, less than 100, some work, some don’t.”

Waimea Weekly

About 4000 of the 950cc diesel engine, nine speed mini tractors were produced, but Viv says that most ended up being used to mow large estates, rather than actual farming. In addition to the Nuffield display, Baden says that the whole complex will be open with traction engine and railway jigger rides, demonstrations, sawmilling, hay baling and, of course, lots of stationary en-

gines, military vehicles, vintage tractors and machinery on display. “And heaps of food and drinks – there’s never any shortage of food,” laughs Baden. The Yesteryear Show is at Higgins Heritage Park, 222 Pigeon Valley Rd, Wakefield, Saturday, January 27 and Sunday, January 28, from 9am to 4pm. Entry fee is only $5. Under 13 is free.

Genetics is in the genes

Steve Udy with some of his pure-bred White Suffolk terminal sires. Photo: Judene Edgar.

Judene Edgar Reporter

judene@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Breeding White Suffolk rams is all about the genetics for Stanley Brook farmer Steve Udy. Steve’s father Malcolm was the sheep station manager for Massey University, helping with their Perendale breeding programme. Shifting to Australia in the 1970s, Malcolm turned his attention to pure-bred White Suffolk sheep, developed as part of a University of New South Wales research programme. Today, the White Suffolk is Australia’s fastest growing meat breed and represents around one-third of all terminal sires. Passing ownership to his son Steve, along with his partner Janet Blount, they now have the only pure White Suffolk flock in New Zealand. “In 2014 we imported two rams and 24 ewes from the Karioi flock in Australia to establish our stud flock in New Zealand,” says Steve. “It’s expensive to buy and import them from Australia, so it was lucky that we already owned them.” As well as only requiring to be shorn once a year and able to be mated year-round, for Steve the key benefits of White Suffolks are their high growth rate, high meat yield, and low fat. As Steve explains, this is not only good for the farmer, who can expect a higher price per carcass, but it also means better lamb eating quality. And Steve has the data to back up his claims. Part of LambPlan, Australia’s sheep genetics breeding evaluation service, Steve’s flock of White Suffolks are in the top 30 per cent for eating quality out of the more than 120,000 sheep evaluated. “The data crunching can be quite sophisticated,” says Steve. “But eating quality is becoming increasingly important for consumers so it’s also more important for breeders.” While still early days, this year they have 24 rams for sale, up from nine the previous year. “Our first ram bred here we lent to a Wangapeka farmer who noticed significantly higher yield, so the next year he came back and bought five of our rams,” he says. Steve is delighted that New Zealand sheep farmers can now access the superior White Suffolk genetics that have been available to Australian farmers for many years. For more information go to whitesuffolk.nz.

Coming from Wellington, Hannah says “there’s no point telling people in Richmond how to live without a bin in Wellington.” “We always arrive a few days early and we literally go into every shop and business

and talk to them, and go to the council and community organisations so we can tell people what’s available – it’s a really important part of it, and we get to learn new things too.” Attendee Richard Boyden

says, “some solutions weren’t for us, but there are things we’ll improve, probably to do with our use of plastics.“ However, seven-year-old Malachi Ayre, who sat in the front row with his notebook to write down any good ideas, gave them two stars. “At my school you get two stars, and my two stars are firstly, they really worked together, the two people running it, and my other star is that they didn’t just tell you things, but they showed you things and described them.” Malachi is excited to try out as many of the ideas as possible. “I thought it was really inspiring about what you should do,” he says. “My mum is going to get a bamboo toothbrush and we’ll make some of our own cleaners.” The Rubbish Trip continues throughout Nelson, Tahunanui, Murchison, Motueka and Takaka over the next two weeks. For further information and dates go to therubbishtrip. co.nz. For anyone unable to make one of the talks, Hannah says that the regional shopping guide will be available on their website from late February.

One dedicated couple who have a real passion for early childhood education has had the opportunity to share this with others in the heart of Hope. Rebecca and Bevan Dudley who own the wellestablished and very popular child care centre ‘Kiwi Explorers’ on Ranzau Rd (which caters for children aged 3 months to 5 years), recognised a need to start a completely new centre for babies and toddlers. So ‘Little Kiwi Explorers’ was created just across the road from their existing pre-school. Kiwi Explorers has been so popular with young families that there has been long waiting lists, but now the new centre has created some welcome relief. Kiwi Explorers pride themselves on their ‘home away from home feel,’ their spacious environment, their fabulous outdoor areas, and great teacher ratios which has been replicated in its new establishment.

Little Explorers is proud of its dedicated teaching team, they are from left, Natasha Dunn, Sarah Blake, Penny Rusbatch, Rebecca Dudley, Caitlin Riordan and Bevan Dudley. Bevan, who assists with managing both centres says, “Little Explorers provides a natural learning environment for children in a purpose-built building.” He says that they were pleased to be able to support local businesses in the development of the new space, such as Grocare who purpose-built much of the

equipment, and the indoor and outdoor furniture. He says that it was also great to use the same builders (Redwood Building) that they used for establishing Kiwi Explorers and that they were amazing to work alongside throughout the entire process. Meanwhile, Rebecca is enthusiastic about the

programme they provide. She says, “we use a movementbased programme – it’s about children moving to learn, so all their movements are making those very important connections to their brains which is happening all the time they are playing.” She says that it’s all about free movement. “For example,

They put a call out on their Facebook page asking for volunteers to bring along their pets, and people “responded overwhelmingly.” The first Pet Connect event was held at Age Concern Nelson Tasman last Wednesday morning during Age Connect’s weekly Tea & Talk session. Around six volunteers brought along their dogs, although Breffni says they are keen to expand Pet Connect to include cats, birds and even animals in a rural setting. “We are looking for some locals who have ‘friendly, lounge-lov-

As momentum builds for the upcoming Sarau Festival 2018, coordinator Jenny Leith says that she is expecting fine weather for this year’s event on January 28. As in previous years, the 11th annual gathering will be a wonderful celebration of the Moutere region, its people, and the blackcurrant harvest, and is organised entirely by Jenny and a team of volunteers. Funds raised go back into the community to support local initiatives such as installing a water fountain and a defibrillator at the Moutere Hills Community Centre, and encouraging research into the building of a walkway to link the Centre with the Moutere Village. They also fund the annual Sarau Scholarship, supporting a Moutere resident who is representing New Zealand in a sporting or cultural activity. Since its inception in 2008 the event has grown in popularity, and in recent years has regularly attracted over 4000 visitors and around 100 stallholders. People are drawn to the event by the wide array of food and craft stalls, the vibrant entertainment, its fun competitions and its focal point – blackcur-

Traditional healers chose blackcurrants for good reason. Scientific research continues to prove this ancient wisdom correct, as studies across the globe clearly demonstrate the health benefits of NZ blackcurrants in supporting an active lifestyle for everyone from elite athletes to weekend warriors, or anyone wishing to remain active as they age. NZ blackcurrants contain significant more of the beneficial antioxidants, known as anthocyanins, than overseas varieties. Try the blackcurrant products available at the Sarau Festival or visit www. blackcurrant.co.nz/blackcurrants/benefits/ for more information on specific health benefits and links to local suppliers.

Bigger and better Market After striking success at the first Bayleys Brightwater Market in December last year, organisers Kellie Todd and Sean Marr are looking forward to seeing the community event return for its second edition. To be held on Sunday, January 28, the market will be a mix of returning and new stallholders, meaning even more variety than last time. Kellie and Sean are also excited at the prospect of having live entertainment, thanks to some local musicians. The kid’s marquee area will continue, allowing younger members of the community a chance to sell handmade products, and this

Sunday will also see a kid’s activity corner with large outdoor games provided by GK Events. Both Kellie and Sean are extremely happy with the way the market is growing organically and thank the community for their support. “We’re just looking forward to watching it flourish over the years to come,” says Kellie. The market is located on the Brightwater village green, next to the Four Square and runs from 8:30am until 12:30pm. If Sunday is plagued by wet weather, check out the market’s Facebook page – The Brightwater Market, so see if it will go ahead or not.

Surf lifesavers tackle Tahuna beach

Andrew Board The sight of dozens of surf lifesavers diving into the water at Tahunanui Beach would usually be cause for some concern, but over the weekend it was all for sport. The Nelson Surf Lifesaving Carnival was a competition hosted by the Nelson club, along with the West Coast’s Kotuku club and Marlborough’s Rarangi club. Nelson Surf Lifesaving Club captain Aaron Lyttle says the carnival was a huge success with sunny days and plenty of action in the

water and on the beach. “It was fantastic. “The first day was all about IRB racing and the Sunday was the beach sports.” The IRB racing included the inaugural running of the ‘Run to the Bay’ where teams had to get from Tahunanui Beach to Cable Bay, and back as quick as they could. The race was won by the Rarangi club ahead of two Christchurch teams, a West Coast team and a Nelson team. The second day of the carnival featured beach sprints, beach flags, surf races, board races

and a ski race. Aaron says the flat water made for tough work for surf competitors. “Even though we have no surf in Nelson, it’s actually really hard work - because you can’t catch a ride on the way back so you’re working the whole time,” he says. Aaron says the event featured 45 local children in the Nippers classes and about a dozen senior local lifeguards. Super Saloon driver Ian Burson was a class above the competition in winning the New Zealand Super Saloon Grand Prix at Wellington Speedway on the weekend. After a couple of flat tyres ruined his New Zealand title chances the week earlier, he showed that he is the quickest saloon driver on clay at the moment. He will be at short

odds to back up his success at the South Island title in February and is currently leading the Vertex Super cup series. Keightley Teece successfully defended his South Island Stock car title in Blenheim, a come-from-the-back effort in the final heat to snatch the win when the points leader Michael Paynter was taken out in the final corner by Thunder team mate Troy Currie, who was also podium bound at the time. Connor Rangi had success the next day in Blenheim and leads the series once again. The formidable women’s triples Wakefield bowls team of Linda Sisterson, Diane Holland and Margaret Eames won the prestigious Car Company Nelson Centre Women’s Triples at the weekend, taking home the Stella Smith trophy. Usually dominated by Stoke teams, on Saturday the Wakefield team won three games out of four, including one against New Zealand internationals Kirsten Edwards and Amy McIlroy with Katie Scott from Stoke, 20 – 9, to qualify for the finals. On Sunday in the post-section knock-out, they had comprehensive wins against three more strong Stoke teams, on Stoke’s home green. They scored 21 - 8 against Mary Orbell, Lesley Morris and Janis Reynolds before defeating Helen Moseley, Marilyn Robinson and Janice Glassey 18 - 8. The Nelson Bays Dive Club Inc was formed in July 1997. Over the past 21 years we have completed many exciting trips both in New Zealand and overseas. In New Zealand we are blessed with world class dive sites with some of these on our back doorstep in the Nelson-Marlborough region and others a bit further afield like Fiordland, Poor Knights and White Island just to name a few. We have wreck diving, food gathering, cave diving, ice diving, reef dives and so on. We also have fantastic marine reserves and all these are mostly within recreational diving depths of 30m and more often within 15m depth. Recently we purchased our own well equipped dive boat which is a Nelson built Osprey 590.

Due to diminishing membership and changing lifestyles we have now merged with the Dawnbreakers Fishing Club and we continue to offer diving events. Recently we had a try-dive where any members who wanted to have a go at scuba diving were shown the basics at the Richmond Aquatic centre. Soon we will be following this up with an open water try dive at Cable Bay. Together we have monthly social days with guest speakers and members can come together to share diving and fishing stories, enter competitions, win prizes and have a great time. These social days are a great opportunity to have a chat with the divers if you are keen to have a go yourself under strict and well trained supervision. Find more info on www.dawnbreakers. co.nz

Road resealing work begins

Stay safe on the water

Our annual road resealing programme is underway to ensure a safe and properly maintained road network. Work begins in 2018 in Murchison, followed by Waimea, Golden Bay, Riwaka and Tapawera. All the resealing is expected to be complete by the end of February. We try to minimise inconvenience for residents where possible, and respectfully ask everyone to be patient and follow any directions from the contractors on site. Please note that on-road parking will be restricted on work sites and there will be temporary limited access to property for pedestrians and vehicles during the construction. This is to allow full access for the construction machinery and allow the job to be completed as quickly as possible.

It’s going to be a great summer for heading out on the water. Harbourmaster Dan Cairney will be out and about offering advice and help to anyone who needs it – stay safe and enjoy yourselves. As well as arming yourself with information about the rules of the sea, it’s a really good idea to take heed of local knowledge about the area you’re heading into. You can find a wealth of advice and information on our website – head to www.tasman.govt.nz/boating.

Queen Street Upgrade starts again on 7 February Work to complete the remaining underground infrastructure upgrades and streetscaping on Richmond’s Queen Street begins on 7 February. The scheduled completion date is the end of May 2018. The work for 2018 will kick off with the replacement of the remaining undersized stormwater pipe up through the Salisbury Road roundabout. At the same time, Stage 4 construction works will kick off from just past Sundial Square up to the Richmond Night and Day dairy – the remaining underground pipes will be replaced and the street surface rebuilt to the new, flood-minimising design. Street remains open Queen Street will remain open for business! Pedestrian access to shops will be open at all times during the day, and at least one footpath will always be accessible at night also. There’s heaps of off-street parking as well as onstreet parking in the areas not under construction. Please continue to support our local businesses through the remaining works. Vehicle access and road closures The area from just past Sundial Square up to the Richmond Night and Day will be closed to traffic. There will also be partial road closures on different parts of the street from the dairy up to Salisbury Road as the stormwater and water pipe replacement work progresses. Please take care in the area and follow the instructions of traffic management staff. Remember – there’s a permanent 30kmh speed limit on Queen Street.

Proposed Richmond and Motueka Town Centre parking strategy We want to know how you think we should manage town centre parking in Richmond and Motueka for the next decade or so. Our proposed plan to meet these objectives includes a range of options for the short, medium and long-term. The short-term plan includes measures such as introducing seasonal time restrictions, changing the layout of existing public carparks for maximum efficiency, improving enforcement, prioritising parking for carpoolers, improving walking and cycling networks and investing in public transport – amongst other things. Camping numbers limited at McKee Memorial Recreation Reserve Pressure on some of our infrastructure at the McKee Memorial Recreation Reserve means we need to limit the number of campers at the site this summer. Most of the reserve is still open for camping, however please be aware we may need to turn campers away if the site gets too full and there will be a small area that is not available for camping. The sewage system at the reserve comes under pressure during heavy rain, so in the event of stormy weather please be aware the dump station could be closed at short notice. Alternative dump stations can be found at Hickmott Carpark, Motueka, and Fittal St, Richmond. The toilets may also need to be closed for short periods of time after rain. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and thank campers for their patience while we work on a long-term fix.

Go By Bike Day Wednesday 14 February, 7.30 – 9.00 am. Join us for a free breakfast and celebrate with other cyclists - giveaways, entertainment, great food and coffee. Richmond: Sundial Square, Croucher Street Takaka: Quiet Revolution, Commercial Street Motueka: Motueka Museum, High Street

Electors may demand poll on voting system The Council has opted to retain the First Past the Post system for voting in the 2019 and 2022 local government elections. However, Tasman voters have the right to demand a poll on the electoral system if they would like that to change. The choice is between First Past the Post (FPP) and the Single Transferable Vote (STV) systems. To be successful, 5% of eligible voters must demand the poll (that’s 1827 registered electors in Tasman District) by 21 February 2018. To find out more visit tasman.govt.nz/feedback.

There is a public seating area where you can observe the meeting, with many of the meetings having a ‘public forum’ providing an opportunity to speak to the meeting if you wish. At the beginning of ordinary meetings up to 30 minutes is set aside for public forum. Each speaker is allocated five minutes. You don’t need to pre-register your intention to speak – just take your turn when invited by the chairperson. These presentations don’t form part of the formal business of the meeting – a brief record will be kept of the matters raised. Any matters requiring further investigation may be referred to staff by the Chairperson.
