What a mess

By Andrew Board Some of the heaviest rainfall in the history of New Zealand has led to damage to more than 100 businesses and homes in Richmond, Hope and Stoke and prompted more than 1500 insurance claims.

Many business and home owners spent most of Monday surveying the damage to their properties, including Tasman District and Nelson City councils, which co-own the badly-affected Saxton Stadium.

It is the second major flood the region has had in a year and a half and it has been described it as “horrendous” by Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne.

“It’s been devastating for many home owners and businesses. I’ve been around many of the business in Richmond and many of them have a great attitude of just getting on with it. I haven’t been to the Wakatu Estate yet but I understand things are not so good there,” he says.

Flooding began on Sunday afternoon and 104 millimetres of rain was recorded at the Upper Roding catchment and 100mm in Stoke, close to the heaviest rainfall ever recorded in a one hour time frame in New Zealand. It led to blocked drains and flooding in parts of Stoke, the Wakatu Industrial Estate, many parts of Richmond including its CBD, and in Hope.

There have been no reported injuries resulting from the flood.

Dozens of homes flooded: In Richmond, home owners furiously attempted to save valuables, lift furniture off the ground and ultimately watch in despair as water crept up walls and even came up through drain holes in their baths.

Her son-in-law David Bidmead drove a van down Bird St as he tried to rescue her, until the vehicle died because the water was so high. He believed Bird St suffered the deepest flooding.

“When we tried to get out the water was waist deep. It wasn’t very nice. We had to take two elderly ladies, one in her 80s and one that’s 94. But you just had to do what you could.”

Another resident, Stacey Davis, had to evacuate her home with her two young children. “I had a cry, it’s so heart-breaking. It just sucks and it happened so quickly,” she says.

A Richmond man says his 24 foot boat was lifted off its trailer by the rising water in a garage at Wakatu Estate and began to float in the garage.

Saxton Stadium ‘a mess’: At Saxton Stadium drainage couldn’t cope with the amount of rain and water crept into the ceiling of the sports house offices where Sport Tasman is based, eventually causing it to collapse into the offices. The stadium itself suffered flooding to its speciality floor, causing what is likely to be the biggest expense for the council. Stadium manager Tony Naylor was devastated and said the damage was a blow to the whole community.

Richard says questions will be asked about how a building that is only three years old was so badly damaged. “I will be asking those questions.”

Miccio, and Nelson MP Nick Smith all praised the work of the police and volunteer fire brigades during the flooding.

Nelson police launched private boats to evacuate people from houses around Richmond at the height of the flooding on Sunday. About 40 Police were on duty managing road closures, redirecting motorists, assisting those who were stranded and helping people evacuate from houses.

Some of those were waist deep in water.

A number of Stillwater Gardens residents were evacuated to the Richmond Police station before being moved into another wing at the resthome.

Richmond Volunteer fire brigade chief, Ralph Lonsdale, says the brigade worked around the clock to try and help Richmond homes and businesses but says in many places the water was just too much.

“The roads were rivers, there was nowhere for us to pump the water that was in people’s homes, other than their neighbours, so we just had to leave them and see if we could help someone else.”

Ralph says there were at least 150 call outs to the volunteers station.

Floods a blow to businesses Local businesses have borne the brunt of Sunday night’s flooding, with extensive damage caused to businesses in Wakatu Estate.

Totalspan Nelson assistant manager Glen Goodman says he arrived on Monday morning to find the entire office soaked, with a water line almost a metre high up the walls and windows. He says with computers wrecked, carpet and furniture sodden, he is dreading having to tell the business owners, who are currently on holiday in Perth, about the destruction and was unsure how he would go about it.

“It is the first time they’ve taken their kids overseas and I just don’t want to ruin that for them so we’ll assess the damage and go from there.”

Brad from Brad’s Smash Repairs was shocked by the amount of water his business had taken on.

He says around 16 customer cars that were on site would most likely be written off. “It’s buggered really. Customers’ cars, the building electrics, parts, all lost. The vehicles are a write off.”

He says his next step would be to clean up and then see what else could be done to get the business back up and running. “We’ll clean up and see what it’s going to cost us. It’s been tough but as we clean up and it’s looking better and we start to feel a bit more hope.”

After a gut feeling that Jellicoe Outlet could be in trouble staff member Sandy Langdon tried to get to the store on Sunday night to check for damage. She says she was told by police on the road that there was no way she could access it.

She says the store could be forced to let go of an entire delivery of fabric that only arrived into the store on Friday.

“The water has just gone right through the shop.

You can see by the damage to the stock that it would have been thigh deep. There’s mud all the way through.”

Dave Johnson, part owner of O2B Healthy Nelson says although his building was awash with mud and water he was looking at it optimistically. “My reaction is that it’s just life. A lot of people are worse off than we are.”

Richmond Mall suffered some flooding but worked through the night to open as normal on Monday morning. Many stores within the mall were still closed on Monday though, cleaning up from the mess that was left by the water.

Bunnings manager Ben Homan expects the cost of the damage to the store to be close to $500,000.

Mixed emotions on ANZAC Day Anzac Day is a day to remember. For some, those memories are of loss and sadness, remembering the friends and family members that served overseas and never returned.

Terry Richardson, president of the Richmond/Waimea RSA says there will be a lot of different emotions on Thursday. “To me it means remembering all those people who fought overseas and never came home,” he says. “For the people who go along to these services, it’s quite tearful for them. To be honest it’s a bloody awful day for them.”

Robin, who says the Vietnam war was “pretty unpopular”, was glad the efforts had finally been recognised. “We weren’t even allowed to wear the uniform when we came back. There was no welcome. We just pissed off home. Now it’s flavour of the month.”

Jill Godbaz, who served in the armed forces, says Anzac Day is about remembering her family that also served for New Zealand while David Hack says it’s a sad day. “But you’ve got to remember them,” he says.

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz John Laing had to wade through waist deep water to escape rising flood waters, leaving behind his now-written off Holden Commodore.

John was setting up for a school holiday programme with a colleague at the Richmond Church of Christ on Sunday evening when the flood struck.

Surprised at how quickly the water rose, John was busy stacking his ministry equipment onto higher ground when he made the decision to leave – although it was too late to save his car.

“My friend said ‘we need to get out here!’ The car was doomed at that stage. The water was up to the door handles and how would I have even got the door open? We just had to leave it.”

Just before he was set to leave the building, which is situated on the corner of D’Arcy and Croucher St, John realised he had left his phone and some computer devices in the office. He described opening the door as “like the Titanic” with water rushing towards him. “You see it on TV and think ‘whoa look at that’ but in reality it just happens so quick. Next minute everything is flooded and you think it’s going to stop, but it’s just more and more.”

John was unable to open the driver’s side door to his car on Monday morning as the water damage was too significant. “It was well above the dashboard.”

The damage to the entire Richmond Church of Christ was also significant and minister Steve Rollo was still finding mud and water in drawers and cupboards on Monday morning.

“The water in the library here was up two book shelves, it was higher than the pool table. Everything has pretty much had it.”

While the holiday programme had been moved to the Headingly Centre, he says an inspection would be done before deciding what the next step is for the church. “We need to find out whether we can still use the building and then we will find some temporary places if need be.”

Drifters leave mark on Best Island roads Diane Williams thought she had discovered a quiet haven when she moved to Best Island – not an isolated paradise for boy racers.

The Best Island woman says she was mor-

tified to see boy racers drifting across the road, cutting up the reserve and leaving rubber scattered across the pavement last weekend. But her biggest issue is the fact no one has followed up on complaints left

with an anonymous crime hotline. “I told them they’re out there. I could see them and they’re drifting all over the road. But now they’re coming closer and basically very close to my house,” says Diane, who believes they have been out there most weekends since March. “All the police need to do is come out within quarter of an hour, because these boy racers are here for at least an hour, and there is no way for them to get off the island.”

Diane is concerned that her family is at risk when they are driving back to the island on a Friday night, because the boy racers are there around “10pm to 11pm” and not in the early hours of the morning. “My son-in-law will spend an evening with his parents and then he’ll come home

She says the boy racers last weekend might have scared off some freedom campers who use the reserve regularly. “I was just mortified when I seen the marks on the grass. It’s bad enough on the road but when you get those marks, they’re cutting it up for the freedom campers that spend one night there.”

While Nelson Police communications manager Barbara Dunn says this particular area had been used on and off in the past for drifting, she was unaware of any recent complaints.

Barbara says boy racers often have access to police scanners which gives them the ability to leave the scene before they are able to respond. “In the case of incidents involving vehicles they should get the registration details and vehicle description.

That way police can follow up even if the offender has left the scene,” she says.

Donation box set up BP in Richmond has organised a donation box for members of the public to help support those affected by the flood.

Site manager Karen Marfell says the idea came about after a large number of regular customers came in and said how they had coped during Sunday’s flood.

“It’s hit them badly. We were fortunate but we want to help and we’re here to help,” says Karen. “It has affected a lot of people and it draws at the old heart strings hearing some of the stories. It’s going to hit some pockets pretty hard so we want to do any little thing we can to help out.”

BP has made contact with the local rotary club, who

will help indentify the people that are in need of some support.

BP itself had some flooding in the roof but was just “millimetres away” from having water come through the door on Sunday evening. Karen, who was not on duty at the time of the flood, says some residents had used to the building for shelter until the water levels dropped.

Computer future praised

The first term of compulsory computers has been completed at Garin College and its students couldn't be happier with the results, although some aren't prepared to throw away the pad and pen just yet.

Garin College told all incoming Year 9 students that a laptop was mandatory for 2013, and although some were initially concerned by the price tag, all students spoken to by the Waimea Weekly say they would recommend the technologic move to students at other schools.

"When you take it home you can talk to your teacher about what we're doing. You can just give them an email and it's a good way to know you're on the right track with homework."

However, Sean was concerned that he would lose his handwriting skills if he solely relied on a laptop keyboard. "It gets quite messy sometimes and the ability of my spelling is appalling and spell check is so easy, but it's probably not so good for my education. Sometimes it would be good to use a pen and paper just to keep your skills up."

But while computers are not compulsory for students outside of the Year 9 catchment, others were still being encouraged to bring them to school.

Nick Baker, a Year 13 student, says around 50 per cent of students in his year brought a laptop to school, just not every day.

"Some teachers are encouraging it, but other subjects like maths, it's a bit more difficult," he says. "It makes learning just a totally different experience. I definitely think it's the way teaching is going."

Nicola Morris, who was initially against bringing a laptop to school because of the cost and the fact NCEA exams will be done on paper, now uses one in class and would also recommend it to others. "I've realised if you don't have a laptop then you're so disadvantaged and so restricted," she says. "I'd definitely recommend it to other schools but you can't have it half and half, you need to tell everyone at the school to do it."

Deputy principal Denis Moriarty says it was expected to take five years before the school made computers compulsory for all students, as it would just force the rule on each catchment of Year 9 students. However, due to the success, he says it's "highly likely" that it will take just two to three years.

"The big jump has been WI-FI [wireless internet]. As soon as we had that at the school then why wouldn't we use it? Half the senior school is tearing their hair out because they can't get to use a computer, but the irony is they have one at home."

Denis says the only downside is affordability, but he even went as far as labelling that a "non-issue". "St Paul's [Catholic School] are letting five year olds use iPads in class, so why would you not expect to use a laptop at secondary school? These guys are digital natives and it just comes naturally to them. This isn't the future, it's the present."

not just large dogs. It’s everyone’s responsibility to make sure their dog is “under control”, whether that means reliable recall off lead or if their recall isn’t the best, keeping them on a lead in certain situations when there are other dogs/people around.

He is so so right! I really struggle with the amount of people who blame dogs for a range of reasons, when these dogs are only doing what is natural to them and what they have been trained to do. It is never the dogs fault, it is always the owner, who is generally naive to the capabilities of any and every dog! It does not make any difference if the dog is lovely with you and your family, the dog may feel threatened and this will change their reactions, just as it changes our reactions.

Hamish’s battlefield bagpipes When Hamish Reade blows through his bagpipes at 11am on Anzac Day he will be in some experienced company.

The Ruby Bay ten year old will be playing bagpipes that have been on the battlefields of the First World War and survived.

Hamish’s grandfather bought the bagpipes in Waikaia, Southland, for his own son. In the box belonging to the bagpipes was a letter that said they were an heirloom, bought back from war. “My dad understood that these were used in the battlefields of France,” says Hamish’s mother Mary Jane.

Mary Jane, who has been to Gallipoli, says Anzac Day will be extra special with Hamish performing the bagpipes. “Anzac Day is special anyway but it will be quite moving to see him perform.”

She was unsure of the actual age and value of the bagpipes and has no idea what happened to original owner. “There’s no phone number with the letter but given more time I will do some research. I don’t know whether the family brought them back or what.”

Hamish, who is the youngest piper in the band, says it was “pretty cool” to be told he was going to perform on Anzac Day.

New hockey turf set for Saxton Field

The installation of a new water turf at Saxton Field means Hockey Nelson is going to have to juggle its schedule during the first six weeks of the upcoming winter season.

The 17 year old sand turf is finally being replaced by a new water turf, which will be similar, although not identical, to the current water turf already at Saxton Field.

Downer is the main contractor for the project, which will also see an upgrade to the flood lights and an overall cost of $950,000.

Hockey Nelson raised 20 per cent of the funds, most of which came from a player turf fee, while the rest will be jointly funding by Nelson City and Tasman District councils.

Hockey Nelson president Diane Proudfoot says

the new turf is expected to be ready for play at the end of June, about six weeks after the season starts.

“We’ll have a period of about six weeks to try balance everything on one turf, which you can imagine will be a nightmare,” she says. “But for the junior programme and for the primary school tournament we’ll have to use some grass fields in the mean time.”

Hockey Nelson started looking at installing a new turf around two years ago, because the sand turf was already five years past its life expectancy.

The first water turf was installed six years ago and was used for a match between the Women’s Black Sticks and India.

There’s something about a stripped back bobber motorcycle that gets Dave Hinton going.

The manager of American Bobbers, which is based in the Wakatu Industrial Estate, says he can’t wipe the smile off his face every time he rides one.

The definition of a bobber is that it’s a custom motorcycle that usually has had the front fender removed and the rear fender “bobbed” or made smaller. The bobber was the earliest simple and stripped down custom motorcycle and was often part of the earlier biker scene before choppers in the 1940s.

But what is it that makes a bobber so popular?

“If you look at Harley Davidson in the last five or six years, they’ve started manufacturing a lot of standard bikes with the retro-old school look,” he says. “The old school retro bobber

look is back. They’re so fun to ride and they’ve very unique. They’re definitely eye catching.”

Dave has been managing the business for the past three years. American Bobbers import components from the United States and build fully customised bobbers on site. “We built a bike for a guy that was so tall he couldn’t fit under the door, so quite often we customise them to people’s requirements.”

It generally takes a bobber around four to six weeks to build.

Dave says Nelson has been a great place to set up business because it has such a large audience of Harley Davidson riders. “We do quite a few units a year. Nelson probably has more Harley Davidson’s per rider capita than anywhere else in New Zealand. I think it’s down to the fantastic area we can ride in.”

Top pupils quizzed on knowledge Students celebrated their academic skills with a quiz night battle between Nelson’s top pupils.

The Cawthron Academic Quiz night was held last Wednesday at Nelson College for Girls attracting 28 teams made up from representatives from all of the region’s colleges.

Organised by the NCG academic committee and the Ministry of Inspiration, a group that advocates for and supports young people in Nelson with high learning potential, co-ordinator Caroline Hoar says the event was huge success. “All of the students who attended had fun challenging their knowledge.”

She says the concept of the night was to “celebrate the intelligence and knowledge of our remarkable young people”.

The questions for the quiz night were devised around a range of topics from urban art, international currencies and astronomy, with each team choosing a theme and dressed in costume. Team dress codes varied from slumber parties, road workers, moustaches to rubix cubes, with the winning team the One-zeeeeee’s from NCG and Nelson College, donning one piece pyjama suits for the night. The top team received $300 in Richmond Mall vouchers and coming in close to grab the runner up spots were ‘One Wheel Short of a Unicycle’ in second place and ‘The Superiors’ in third.

Riley O’Sullivan-Moffat, 13, says his team were “full of enthusiasm” and that they were having a great time.

By David Gruschow All of us have had the experience of forgetting things, some of course more than others! We can forget what groceries we really need when we are at the supermarket and equally we can forget people we met and events that happened in the past and their significance. Insofar as we do forget these significant people and events, our lives are the poorer for it.

‘Let we forget’ is one of the key phrases that will be used during our ANZAC commemorations tomorrow. It is a phrase that resonates with increasing numbers of us, at least going by the growing attendances in recent years at dawn parades and other ANZAC ceremonies. We instinctively realise I think that unless we regularly bring to mind the sacrifices made for our nation in the past, we will collectively be the poorer for it. As well, our appreciation of the freedoms we now enjoy may be blunted, and current threats to those freedoms overlooked.

I count myself fortunate in this regard as I have been able to visit a number of cemeter-

ies throughout the world where New Zealand service personnel and those from other countries who fell in World Wars I and II are buried. I found it a profoundly moving experience to walk along the lines of headstones or crosses and to read the inscriptions. The vast majority were in their late teens or twenties, from familiar towns, cities and rural areas of our country. That they were prepared to travel far from our shores to fight to preserve the freedom of our country and of our allies, gave rise to a deep feelings of both gratitude and sadness within me. It taught me too a profound lesson about the value in life of generosity, sacrifice, comradeship and even adventure.

It seems to me that each generation of us needs to remember and appreciate anew these mainly young people and their sacrifice. Insofar as we do, our country will surely continue to both ‘good’ and ‘great’.

Buying a poppy and attending an ANZAC commemoration seems little enough.

Lest we forget.

Rewards of learning Having had the privilege of coordinating classes for adults over the past four years, Kathryn Sclater, Community Education Coordinator for Nayland College has got to know the efforts and rewards that go in to and come out of attending courses as an adult learner. She says one of the rewards that comes from choosing to learn something new is that you really do ‘get better work stories’. “It is extremely fulfilling to take time for yourself or household and learning alongside like-minded people in a social setting.

It can be so energising and is the best antidote to ‘always working’ being ‘too tired’, or not wanting to go out on a winter’s night.” Whether it’s proudly saying “I made this” when someone comments on the fantastic, unique felt or silk scarf you’ve created, being the only person in your workplace able to communicate with a deaf person, or entertaining friends and family with cheese you’ve made, eggs you’ve grown or new winter dishes you’ve perfected, there’s a community education course or class at Nayland to suit everyone. Art teacher Judith Ritchie offers a new course based on recycling and reinventing old, tired home ware objects. Rowena Lukomska teaches exciting ways to use fabric scraps, threads and fi-

bres and explore machine embroidery techniques and Nelson cake decorating guild members June Walters and Joan Wills are introducing students to the world of cake decorating and sugar craft. The popular cooking classes will have Joc’ Winters students produce a range of taste-exploding dishes from a different country each week and Luke Macann will show students that winter foods are not all about tubas and brassicas but signals a time for warming soups, sumptuous and nourishing stews, earthy roast dishes and hot comforting deserts. Research shows that most people attend classes at Nayland to learn new skills, increase confidence, personal or professional development, to improve health or for social connections. For this reason, Nayland College is proud to continue the tradition of utilising its school resources for adult learning and working with others to achieve quality, regular, informal learning opportunities in the Nelson region.

Former Jet Josh Pace led the scoring for the Nelson Giants with 25 points on his return back to the franchise he first played for in 2006.

The rugby season has well and truly kicked off but there’s still time to dust your boots off and get into training with the Tapawera Rugby Football Club still taking players for their senior third division team. Joining the team is a great way to catch up with local guys, get fit and stay active this winter so grab a jersey, head out on the field and represent Tapawera this season.

The JAB had a fantastic response at registration with four teams now geared up ready to represent the TRFC on the fields. The under 9 and under 13 teams have joint forces with Murchison , great numbers showed for the under 6 and under 11 teams and now the kids are ready to start their season after the school holidays. It’s not too late for your little one to get amongst the fun and fair play sporting atmosphere, so if your child is interested or someone you know is, call Warwick Hodgkinson on 03 522 4009 to sign them up.

The start of the rugby season will be celebrated with the third annual Tapawera RFC Boar Hunt.

This adventurous start to winter is a great way to get hearts racing and kick start some friendly rivalry, with entry open to all keen hunters. Entry is only $20 with plenty of cash prizes to spur on the competition. From 5pm Thursday May 2 contestants will have 48 hours to bag themselves a beast with the final weigh in held between 5pm and 6pm on Saturday May 4. Prizes up for grabs start with heaviest boar with a $250 prize, $200 for the second heaviest all the way down to $50 for the fifth heaviest. Biggest tusks will claim a $50 prize, average weight will take home $200 and those out for the ‘roar’ will take home $200 for the heaviest stag.

The event is all about fun for the whole family so take your child hunting and even they could win a prize. Entry is free for the under 15’s and they can enter on the day. Weigh in for the kids entries will happen at 4.30pm on the Saturday, so be sure to get there in time to take home prizes for heaviest goat, heaviest possum, or mixed. After weigh in there will be a social get together with hot food and well deserved cold drinks, so make sure you stick around and enjoy the festivities. There senior third division team will also be playing a game before weigh in so get there early and cheer on the team.

Last year this event was extremely popular with more than 40 entries at weigh in, so get your entry in quick by picking one up from Stirling Sports in Richmond or the Tapawera Four Square and make sure you send it in via post with payment by April 30.

QSP Richmond Athletic continued its perfect start to the football season, winning its third match in a row.

The 1-0 result, decided by an own goal to Wakefield’s Dave Harris on 60 minutes, highlighted a scrappy encounter against the new boys, who also missed a penalty.

Richmond Athletic, who haven’t lost a game since appointing Marc Evans to the head coaching role, now top the standings after Nelson College drew 0-0 with Nelson Suburbs first XI. Richmond entered the game full of confidence and held possession well throughout the first half, but were unable to score, despite the efforts of Mike Campbell, who ran through the defenders with ease.

Wakefield went into the second half knowing that it could pinch an upset, and peppered the goal on the odd occasion. Until the 60th minute own goal sapped the side of its momentum. When it rains it pours, and a penalty awarded to Wakefield when Johnny Kawala was taken down in the box was no bonus as he sent his shot wide.

Wakefield take on the Central Pirates in Blenheim in the ASB Chatham Cup this Thursday.

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz Nelson Netball hosted the Geraldine Hodgson Tournament at Saxton Stadium during the weekend. Although the preseason tournament was originally set for play on Saxton Courts, the predicted rainfall forced the tournament indoors.

The tournament was played with 15 teams competing in two sections in the A Grade, seven in each of the B, C and D Grades.

The first section of Grade 1 was dominated by the two men’s teams with Prices Pharmacy and Fairweathers Central from Blenheim. Prices swept all before them as they went through the weekend undefeated while Central Men were accounted for by Prices Pharmacy A. Jacks Office Products Depot and Prices Pharmacy A had the same four win two loss record as the Fairweather Central Mens however they finished third and fourth respectively on goal ratio.

Coaches of Jacks OPD, Prices and Stoke Nelson Building Society all agreed the tournament was a great success and admitted although it is nice to come away on the right side of the ledger the object of the two day tournament is to develop combinations and “suss out” the opposition.

Richmond shooter, Kathleen Thornalley said it was really good to pick up from where they left off last season – being a non-practising team, it was a matter of meeting thirty minutes before game time and getting on with the game.

Both mid courters, they combined well with seasoned campaigner Lisa Book who bibbed up for every game.

The defensive unit of Marina Hurst-Tristam and Kat Jones toiled tirelessly against some impressive offensive line ups. It was all the better for Kat, as it was her first game back after knee surgery.

squad on account of a number of key players out due to a NZ Volleyball trial.

Coach Fay Eden had only two shooters and two circle defenders, while having an abundance of middies at her disposal.

Waimea had a particularly good showing against Prices Black, down by one at half time they showed grit and determination to claim a one goal win against some very experienced opposition.

Goal shoot, Shaun Aindow was impressive throughout, with an average of 85% while Breanna Whiting displayed class at both goal and wing attack. Freya Watson was the stand out in the defensive third, more accustomed to goal keep Freya stepped up well in the GD bib.

Although Garin College had a narrow loss to Prices White, they accounted for the remainder of the teams to take the B Grade title. Garin were a little shakey to begin with and that showed as the struggled slightly against Prices however once they settled into their rhythm they played some enterprising netball. While it was satisfying to win the grade, coach Sarah Rankin said she treated the tournament as an opportunity to try her team’s combinations.

Goal shoot, Olivia Nott returned great stats while Makaila Powick worked hard through the mid court. Phoebe Harris was a useful defender, spending time in each of the three bibs. Garin displayed some impressive structured play – there was lovely straight play and they used their triangles well. The team’s through court defensive pressure also paid dividends.

While in past seasons Garin has been down the grades, they relished the opportunity of playing college teams – with narrow wins over Nayland College A, Waimea College 10A and Motueka High School.

Buoyed by being at the top of the table, James wanted the team to embrace its confidence and hold onto it for as long as possible. “It’s not something we’ve had for awhile but now that we’re top of the table it’s something that we really want to build on. We don’t want to let it slip.”

James admits the side “only played 40 minutes of rugby” on the weekend, as it kept Nelson scoreless in a dominant second half display. “That next 40 minutes we were definitely on the right foot going forward.”

With less teams this year there was an expectation that the quality had risen. So when questioned on what makes Waimea the benchmark in a tough season, James was hesitant. “I wouldn’t say we’re necessarily better. I guess we’ve done our homework and we know what we need to do.

We’ve got a good foundation of players that have come back and I guess.”

The winner of this weekend’s game will not only hold the lead after the first round, but will continue a winning streak.

Rumour also had it there were some double digit fish caught in Mahau sound last weekend in 6 metre of water. Several Dawnbreaker boats also ventured down to D’urville in search of kingfish and groper but found them hard to come by. Although they did do well with blue cod and other species of fish.

The long range forecast is great for the next week with more rain expected over the next few days. It will take some time for the dirty water to clear in Tasman Bay and the inner sounds and you will need to be very cautious boating for the next week or so, as there will be heaps of debris in the waterways and usually some of it will be large and partially submerged.

As I am writing this a weather bomb has gone off over Stoke and Richmond. The most intense rain, thunder and lightning I have seen for a long time. This will definitely slow the fishing down but that will be least of a lot of people’s problems.

We had a bit of rain last week and you don’t have to be a weather guru to realise that our recent run of warm weather might be ending.

The weekend has seen a substantial amount of rain which will start to cool the water temperature that has kept good numbers of fish in Tasman Bay. Carpet sharks seemed to be plentiful last week and dominated the catch of a lot of fisherman.

A few snapper were still about Rabbit Island and the Boulder Bank but not in huge numbers. This would suggest that the fish are moving out to deeper water and reports of some good fishing around Pepin Island in about 30m of water would back this theory up. The best bait that seems to be working at the moment is the old stinky kind that has been in the freezer a while. Barracouda seems to be especially popular with the snapper last week, as they wouldn’t touch much else.

Kenepuru has been much hit and miss this season but over the last couple of weeks some xos snapper have been caught. One of the best ways to fish Kenepuru is to use a stray line rig with 7/0 hooks and a ¼ oz sinker on the incoming tide during the change of light, with plenty of salmon burley flowing.

Successful applicants would be required to work with more experienced volunteers initially, to gain confidence before being asked to work alone or with a friend. Applicants should have a good knowledge of the District, be well presented, and enjoy meeting and conversing with visitors both New Zealand and from overseas. The Richmond Information Centre has been operating for over 25 years. The Centre is well appointed with good facilities. Quilters show their skills Motueka Quilting Connection hold their annual show at the Motueka Recreation Centre, Old Wharf Road, from Saturday to Monday 18-20 May 2013. (Please note the change of venue because of the fire at the Upper Moutere Community Centre.) Guest exhibitor is Mary Transom. The show also includes the Bernina ‘Seven Deadly Sins’ Challenge Quilts.

Show times are 10.00 am to 4.00 pm daily, and the entrance fee of $3 includes refreshments. Part of the raffle proceeds will be donated to Fifeshire Foundation and Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

Sport NZ Rural Travel Fund Does your sports team have places to go and games to win?

The Sport NZ Rural Travel Fund is aimed at making it easier for young people living in rural communities to participate in team sports.

The fund can help subsidise travel costs for junior teams to enable them to take part in local sports competitions. The Rural Travel Fund is open to support rural sports clubs and rural school teams with players aged between 5-19 years.

The closing date is 30 April 2013 with applications to be considered by the Tasman District Council Grants and Community Facilities Rate Subcommittee.
