New gateway for Richmond
Nelson company, Coman Holdings Limited, is considering plans to develop land adjacent to the ASB Aquatic and Fitness Centre that could transform the intersection of Champion and Salisbury roads into the new northern gateway to Richmond. Last month, Progressive Enterprises announced it had purchased land from Richmond Funeral Services on the other side of Salisbury Rd, potentially for a new Countdown supermarket. Now Coman Holdings has confirmed it is planning to develop 5260 square metres of land at 149 Salisbury Rd that it purchased from the Tas-
man District Council - the land is opposite Raeward Fresh. “We haven’t yet made any decisions about what we will build on the site,” Coman Holdings director Bill Coman says. “We are considering a number of options and are talking with interested parties. The size of the land means there could be more than one development. You could do a variety of things there including retail, motels, cafes and other possible businesses.” Bill says the zoning of the land means it cannot be used for residential development.
Construction under way next to the ASB Aquatic and Fitness Centre. Coman Holdings Limited purchased the land because it is ideally situated as a destination on the edge of Richmond and close to Stoke and two major retirement villages.
“There is a lot of residential development occurring around that part of Richmond and it’s close enough to attract people from Stoke as well. We didn’t know about the Countdown development when we purchased the land but that just added to the viability of the site.” Work has already started on constructing an entranceway to the site and Bill says they are “certainly keen to get on with it”. However, the timing of the development would hinge on “securing an anchor tenant and developing and finalising a conceptual design”.

“I think there’s enough advertising about it but I don’t think it’s going to change people, when they’re smoking they’re addicted. It’s up to the individual to stop smoking.”
“I don’t know whether there is enough done, people get used to them, you see it come on the telly and after the second or third time you ignore it.”

And thanks to the ASB Aquatic and Fitness Centre, the list of items for this year’s auction is shaping up to be just as good, after centre manager Vaughan Hope last week presented a year’s membership to the fitness centre and pool valued at $1037. “It’s a wonderful prize and we really appreciate their support,” Walk With Us president Carol Shirley says. “They donated the same prize last year and it sold for more than its value, so I’m sure it will be a popular item again this year.” Although the charity is only just over a year old, Carol
says it is already gaining a lot of support from the business community. It is also being well received by schools and sporting clubs which benefit from the charity’s donations. “It started with eight businesswomen around Nelson who wanted to help the community. One of the women had been a school teacher and she said she’d seen quite a few children who needed new shoes. “We approached the schools and got good feedback and it grew from there. We’ve donated about 200 pairs of shoes so far and it’s growing all the time - we are expecting to grow and grow.” The charity is also supported by Stirling Sports and Num-

ber One Shoes which have an agreement with Walk with Us so that children can redeem vouchers at their stores in Richmond and Nelson. Carol says they “already have some really good prizes” for this year’s auction that will be held at the Waimea Old Boys clubrooms on October 28, starting at 6.30pm. Tickets cost $10 and can be purchased at Haven Realty at 8 McGlashen Ave in Richmond, or by calling or texting Jill Taylor 021 0279 8424, Carol Shirley 027 667 2837 or Anne Marie Teece 027 544 8255 Anyone who would like to donate an item for the auction can contact Jill, Carol or Anne Marie.

Murchison’s hero cop does it again

Murchison police constable, Mike McDougall, seems to be making a habit of saving people’s lives. Last May, Mike was the first officer on the scene after truck driver Stephen Sowman lost control of his vehicle on State Highway 6, north of Murchison, and crashed 30 metres down a bank into the Buller River. Mike was unable to reach the truck in the fast-flowing water, but raced back to Murchison to get a jetboat to ferry emergency services workers to the truck and save the trapped driver. Mike was in rescue-mode again last Friday, heading into the bush in the Rainy River with colleagues and three Murchison farmers to locate a hunter who called 111 at about 5.30pm to say he was lost. He gave his general location before his cell phone lost power preventing police from making further contact. The rescue party managed to make contact with the lost hunter about 10.30pm by ex-

By that time it was snowing heavily and there were concerns for the welfare of all involved. The group tried to move through the bush in formation towards the missing man. with the hunter, but in pursuing him lost contact with the rest of the rescue team - he also lost radio and cell phone contact with his colleagues. Two teams of Search and Rescue volunteers joined the search and eventually managed to get a GPS location on the pair after Mike activated his Officer Safety Alarm. They were located about 1am suffering early signs of hypothermia but were able to walk out of the bush with their rescuers. Nelson Bays area commander, Inspector Steve Greally says Mike is typical of their rural police officers who all have “a huge range of skills”. “Mike is a rural constable and you have to be a jack of all trades for that job. They are the go-to-guys who can do anything. “Mike is part of a really, really good team. Nelson Bays are very fortunate to have rural police officers like that and as a result the public confidence in them is very high.” Rural Sergeant Rob Crawford says he was concerned for the welfare of the officer and the hunter last Friday due to the extreme weather conditions.

Kahurangi National Park Rat and Possum Control Operation The Department of Conservation (DOC), as part of its Battle for our Birds programme, intends to apply cereal pellet baits containing sodium fluoroacetate (1080) in Kahurangi National Park. The pest control is being undertaken to protect native species from rats and possums.
Description of the area
Approximately 270,000 ha Kahurangi National Park and other public conservation land between the Owen Valley in the south to Parapara Peak/Kahurangi Point in the north. The operation extends from western boundary at the coastline north from Kohaihai to the Wangapeka River boundary /Mt Arthur Range in the east. Major areas include (but not limited to): Heaphy Track; Wangapeka Track; Mt Owen; Cobb Valley and part of the Mt Arthur Tablelands.
Method of control
Cereal baits containing the pesticide 1080 will be distributed by helicopter over the above area. The 1080 baits are cylindrical pellets approximately 2-3 cm long, cinnamon-lured and dyed green. The 1080 operation will be preceded by an application of non-toxic prefeed baits. The non-toxic prefeed baits are 2 cm long and not dyed. All public walking tracks within the area will be closed during and immediately following the 1080 operation until a track inspection is completed. Warning signs will be placed at all normal points of entry to the area and at huts within the area immediately prior to the 1080 operation.
Always remember when in the area: •DO NOT touch bait or bait bags •WATCH CHILDREN at all times
•DO NOT eat animals from this area •DO NOT allow DOGS access to animal carcasses
Observe these rules whenever you see warning signs placed at the public access ways in the above area. Please call the National Poisons Centre for details regarding sodium fluoroacetate (1080) – Ph. 0800 764 766.
Commencement Date
The operation will commence with a single application of non-toxic prefeed baits on or after 23 September 2014. The application of 1080 bait will follow at least five days later. The area is divided in five operational blocks which may be treated at different times. The actual date of all parts of the operation will depend on the availability of periods of suitable weather. For further information contact the following offices of the Department of Conservation: Takaka Office: 62 Commercial St, Takaka (03) 525 8026. Firefighters from the Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade and the Nelson Fire Brigade’s hazardous materials response team plan their next move, during last week’s chemical scare on Queen St in Richmond. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.
Chemical attack in Queen St It could be another week before police know the identity of the substance used in last week’s chemical attack on a Queen St store that closed down part of Richmond’s central business district for two hours. A 45-year-old man was chased and apprehended by a group of Waimea College students after he was seen throwing an unknown liquid onto a rack of clothes outside boutique clothing store, Captivation, at about 3.30pm last Thursday. The incident resulted in emergency services closing Queen St between Wensley Rd and Cambridge St and evacuating businesses, as a hazardous

material team from the Nelson Fire Brigade removed the contaminated clothing. Nelson police spokesperson Barbara Dunn says the contaminated clothing has been sent to forensic scientists for testing, but it “could be at least a week before the results come back”. The chemical dissolved some of the clothing on the rack and shop owner Lea Lock was taken to hospital as a precaution after suffering from a sore throat but was later discharged. “The man has been charged with criminal damage which has a maximum sentence of seven years in prison so it is a serious charge regard-
less of the chemical,” Barbara says. “But the identity of the chemical will help guide any decisions that are made relating to this case.’ Nelson Bays police area commander, Inspector Steve Greally, praised the actions of Waimea College’s Pete Goldthorpe, Team Blacc, Jadyn Moore, Jayden Seddon and Panith Ear who apprehended the man. The students were walking along Queen St after school when they saw another man chasing the suspect. They set off in pursuit, jumping a fence into a church property where Team tackled the suspect.

Dam cost will ‘shock’ ratepayers Simon Bloomberg Ratepayers will be in for a “shock” next month when they find out how much they may have to pay towards the proposed Waimea Community Dam after the Tasman District Council this week estimated the cost of the project at $60 million to $80 million. Council needed to forecast the cost of the proposed dam so that it can proceed with consultation on the funding and governance of the dam. TDC chief executive Lindsay McKenzie says an estimated cost is also needed for the budgets that will be incorporated into the council’s 2015-2025 Long Term Plan, if the project proceeds. The proposed dam is designed to store up to 13 million cubic metres of water in the upper reaches of the Lee River to supply irrigators on the Waimea Plains and urban and industrial users around the district Lindsay says a cost of $42 million had previously been quoted for the project but that figure is too low because it is based on 2009 dollars and would be inflated to $56 million by 2017-18 when construction is planned. The council will use a range of $60 million to $80 million because of the additional costs already incurred by the project and to allow for any uncertainty about “the end result”. Council will give ratepayers an indication of how much they will have to contribute towards the project after those figures are discussed by councillors next month. Although Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne concedes ratepayers are likely to be “shocked” by the figures, he says the implications of canning the dam project are far more costly. “Without the dam and more water Richmond will stop growing. The dam will also provide water for Brightwater, Mapua and the Redwood Valley. “It is going to be a very expensive project and a lot of people will be shocked at the cost but there will be even bigger costs if we don’t have the water.” Lindsay says a further “engineer’s estimate” of the likely costs will be obtained before going to tender should the council decide to proceed. However, Lindsay says the real costs of the dam will be unknown until tenders are received for its construction. Richard says he is pleased “the approach to estimating the likely cost of the dam has been clarified”. A community consultation on the funding and governance arrangements for the proposed dam is planned to start next month and be completed before Christmas. Richard says council will know by next June whether or not it will proceed with the dam. “That’s when we will know if its go or no go.”

Nelson band calls it quits
Minuit started life as a covers band playing in Nelson bars, this November it will end as one of New Zealand’s finest electronic bands, with five original albums and plenty of great memories. Ruth Carr, Paul Dodge and Ryan Beehre are calling a day on their 15 year-old band with four gigs around New Zealand, the first in Nelson on
November 1. Ryan says the time is right to close the book on Minuit. Paul and Ruth now live in Wellington and have just adopted a child and Ryan is working on several other musical projects in Nelson. He says they began working together in Nelson as a covers band with Ryan playing guitar, Ruth on drums and Paul on bass. Ryan then started to ex-
periment on a newly-bought sampler and those experiments led to a new style of music, he says. “We morphed into this electronic band and Ruth came out from behind the drums and became the singer and boom – we had Minuit.” The Nelson concert is on November 1 at the Granary at Founders Heritage Park. Tickets are $35 from Ticket Direct.

Top flowers at Brightwater show
The Brightwater Flower Show was the perfect introduction to spring. Daffodils, poppies, freesias and irises were all in full bloom at the Brightwater Memorial Hall, as the judges carefully scrutinised each bloom from the amateur section to the crème-de-le-crème of local flower breeders. Everything from flower shape, petal quality, colour and the orientation of the flower head added up to a first class flower and growers from Motueka, Richmond, Brightwater, Hope and Stoke were all hoping their pride and joy ticked the right boxes. At the end of the weekend event a number of awards had been handed out including the
Champion Bloom which went to Denise and Neil McQuarrie for their daffodil, Ohmeomy while Brightwater Daffodil of the Year was won by Mike Smith with his bloom Gold Lake. Brightwater School had a section of their own too after 100 daffodil bulbs were gifted to them in a fundraising activity. For all the daffodils brought back on the day, the Brightwater Horticultural Society donated five dollars towards a planned field trip and happily passed on a total of $250 to the school. Special awards went to Kaitlyn Thibodeau and her brother, Oliver, for their standout daffodils. The Brightwater Horticultural Society is now planning their summer show in January.

Nelson’s two MPs heading into Saturday night recorded almost exactly the same number of votes as three years earlier – but that will be of little comfort to Labour’s Maryan Street who appears to have missed out on parliament all together. National’s Nick Smith recorded 18,376 votes in Saturday’s general election, up 16 votes on 2011. Maryan collected 11,276, an increase of four votes. The closeness to their results of three years earlier is uncanny but it has vastly different consequences for the pair. Nick described the win as the best night ever for the National Party in Nelson, but its party vote actually decreased slightly, from 16,016 in 2011 to 15,434. In West Coast-Tasman, Labour’s Damien O’Connor romped home with a big win over National’s new candidate, Maureen Pugh. Despite Damien’s big win in the electorate, National won the party vote.

Demand for food packages has doubled since the start of the month and more and more people are turning to community meals dished up for no charge. Nelson Food Bank manager, Mike Gordon, says demand has jumped from around 20 food packages a week, to 40 a week since the start of September. He says around 300 Nelsonians now rely on free food, either from the food bank or from one of the churches or trusts that provide free meals. In the first week of September, volunteers at the food bank delivered 44 food parcels for 96 people, the second week dropped back to 30 parcels. The food bank usually only delivers around 20 parcels a week. Mike says the increase is putting pressure on its resources, including volunteers. “There’s been an increase in big families with at least four children. We haven’t got enough volunteers on certain days now.” The story is the same for those putting on free meals in community centres and churches around the region. Food for Families Trust founder Martin Reading started the charity a year ago and says he now feeds around 70 people every week. Other groups, like the Anglican Church in Richmond, St Stephen’s Church in Tahuna, Loaves and Fishes in Nelson and Salvation Army, also give food to people. Mike says people now rely on the parcels. Anyone keen to volunteer for the food bank can call 547 9902.

e l p o e p d o o f h s Y ou r f re Tasman Music Trust tutor Simon Williams and chairwoman, Melanie Stewart, with Henley School music students, from left, Ruby Wardrope, Charlotte Doty, Elise Smith and Olivia Olsen. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.
New music trust set up to help our kids A new trust is being launched this week that aims to provide all primary school children in the Tasman district with the opportunity to learn how to play musical instruments. The Tasman Music Trust was formed by a group of musicallyminded parents and teachers and was officially launched at a function at Waimea College on Wednesday night. Chairwoman Melanie Stewart says the group decided to form the trust because they considered that some primary school students were missing out on opportunities to learn musical instruments. Melanie, who is Head of Music and Performing Arts at Waimea College, says they identified a number of reasons for this, including the cost of lessons, and will be targeting those issues. She says the trust aims to encourage young people to participate in music as a performer, by providing access to affordable instruments, music lessons and quality tuition. “We have the itinerant music teacher system in high schools and that makes music lessons affordable,” Melanie says. “But many primary school children need to get private
music lessons which can be expensive and also involve a lot of travel.” Melanie says they have already purchased four clarineos and two Pbones, which are smaller plastic versions of a clarinet and trombone respectively, and two flutes with help from sponsors Smith Contracting and the Car Company. The trust’s tutors are taking lessons at Henley, Appleby and Rotoiti schools with pupils hiring the instruments and paying just $8 for a group lesson. “We need to get more instruments because we can’t teach without them. We have had some really good support from the business community and we are hoping to get more as our profile increases.” One of the trust’s music tutors, Simon Williams, says the scheme will benefit young musicians because teaching children music at primary school “really accelerates their progress”. “You do get some students who start late but usually it makes all the difference if they can get lessons at primary school,” he says. Melanie says the trust also aims to set up scholarships for talented young musicians from families with limited financial resources.

It pretty much costs the same to travel from Nelson to Wellington and Nelson to Auckland, makes no sense to me to be honest. It is so expensive! Jannelle Patterson. I paid $567 for my flights from Melbourne to Nelson (via Chch) return not that long ago for March 2015. I’m not kidding you when I say that $340 of that cost is for my flights to Nelson from Christchurch (return). It’s sick! And the only reason why I won’t come home more often is because I pay ridiculous fares within NZ and I think it is bloody stupid! Sort it out Air NZ. Zara (via website). Yes! Would love to be able to fly to Christchurch to see the kids grandparents but it’s way to expensive! We can fly from main centres to Oz
cheaper than Nelson to Christchurch! Verity Bartlett.

Sauvignon Blanc 2013 GREAT WITH POULTRY
Vavasour Awatere Valley
Pepperjack Barossa
Awatere Valley Sauvignon has a softer, floral, white stonefruit character – and it’s on display in all its delicious glory here. This intensely flavoured, citrus-forward wine also won the Trophy for Champion Sauvignon Blanc at the 2014 Easter Show Wine Awards. It’s a must-sip!
If you’re a fan of bright, bold reds that ooze plum, mocha, blackberry and peppery spices, then this has your name on it. Rich and generously flavoured and boasting just the right amount of ‘chew’ on the finish – it’s a warming, plush, satisfying wine indeed. Woof!

Blossom festival shines
The cherry blossoms took centre stage once again during the thirteenth Cherry Blossom Festival at Miyazu Gardens on Sunday. Around 2000 people stepped out to enjoy a programme of music, food and entertainment in celebration of Spring and Nelson’s long standing relationship with its Japanese sister city, Miyazu.
“We were very happy with the turn out and we were particularly happy that the weather shone on us, it was a perfect day,” says chairperson of the Nelson Miyazu Sister City association, Lyndal McMeeking. For over 30 years the two cities have enjoyed the benefits of each other’s cultures and friendship, and Lyndal says there are around 150 Japanese

Mall supports Stoptober The Nelson-Tasman region’s 8300 smokers have a gimmicky new way to quit the habit after health promoters rolled into town last week to launch a nationwide stop smoking campaign. The Stoptober roadshow is touring the country to encourage the 13.9 per cent of New Zealanders who smoke to sign up to the challenge and quit during October. A giant red ball, emblazoned with the word ‘stop’, was rolled out in Trafalgar Street and the Richmond Mall on Wednesday to promote the campaign which is being supported by Nelson Bays Primary Health, Nelson Marlborough District Health Board and Heart Foundation. “Stoptober and the ball may be gimmicky but it is sending out the right message around the country,” Nelson Bays Primary Health’s Steve Lavery says. “We have 8300 smokers in Nelson and Tasman and that’s 8300 too many,” “If people can sign-up to Stoptober and quit for 31 days then they have a good chance of carrying on and stopping completely.” NMDHB, Director of Maori Health, Harold Wereta says the stop smoking message appears

to be getting through with numbers of smokers declining and they needed “to build on these positive gains for Nelson-Marlborough”. However, smoking remains a concern, especially among Maori, with the latest Census statistics showing that 30.4 per cent of Maori aged 15 and over smoke regularly compared to 13.9 per cent of all New Zealanders. Harold says smoking remains a real challenge facing the Maori and general community and Stoptober gives the district “a chance to reduce these rates and to improve the health and wellbeing of our communities”. Unichem Richmond owner Simon Alexander isn’t surprised at the decline in the number of smokers recorded in the latest Census because he has noticed a steady increase in sales of nicotine patches and gum. They are also getting more prescriptions for anti-smoking medication as more people become aware of the health risks of smoking, he says. Unichem is a sponsor of Stoptober. People can sign up for Stoptober by going onlione to stoptobernz.co.nz

Do you have a “Business Banking Expert”?
Choosing the right bank for your business can have a significant impact on its success. If you have ever owned a small business, you will know that selecting a bank is a time-consuming process. In addition to building the business and attracting and retaining customers, there is the added stress of organising a suitable financial structure. A small business owner may look to a bank or their Accountant to help. All banks will advertise that they have a version of a ‘business banking expert’. The level of efficiency, experience and autonomy with these staff is largely dependent on the size of your business. Turnover and debt levels are key aspects in regard to the seniority of the business banking manager that will be assigned to look after your accounts. Your location will also be a factor as many banks do not have business banking staff located in smaller towns. If you are a small business, with no or minimal debt levels, it is unlikely you will have a close and active relationship with a ‘business banking expert’. If you are also located in a smaller town, the best you can often hope for is a phone discussion via a 0800 to someone you may never meet face to face. Think about your experience with your current bank. Who do you talk to when you have a problem with your account? Is there a branch nearby where you can make deposits conveniently? Is the person ultimately responsible for making decisions on your loan located at the local branch? As your business grows, the convenience of dealing with these types of day-to-day account issues will play a big part in your satisfaction with your banking relationship. An established, personal relationship with a bank will make it easier for you to manage finances. The business banking market is competitive, so if you aren’t getting the personal service from your existing bank, don’t be afraid to ask for something better, or shop around for a new ‘business banking expert’. You deserve the service, no matter how big or small your business is.

Russell Campbell of Inhaus Developments Ltd
“With NBS I have access to an experienced and local Branch Manager who knows my business and can make their own decisions.”
Just a thought...
We are living in days when religion, politics, and world-stability are highly inter-related. I guess there has always been a degree of this, because most people have some sort of code, values, or social principles by which they live, and for the three great monotheistic religions, these principles for living a good life come from a shared understanding that there is a mind behind our world, which is described as God Almighty. When we assess religious values and virtues, it depends very much on our understanding of the character and purpose of this God of all creation. The current threat to world stability, peace, and order, is the various Islamic sects, which have a view of God as One who would use anarchy, disorder, mass murder, as a means of bringing about something supposedly better! So you have to ask the deeper question, and that is this: “if there Allan Wasley is a God of creation who made and has a clear plan for God’s earth, is that God a god willing to break all the rules about loving one another to set up some understanding of the Kingdom of God on earth? This is, is this God primarily a God of wrath, of murder, of slaughter of the innocents – a God who uses military might in the cause of injustice and wholesale murder of men, women and children, desiring to manipulate world events to achieve that goal? Well if God created the world, and God saw it was good, despite the advent of choice and sin – then God has a heart of love, compassion and care for those he created, I reckon. That’s the God we read about in the Bible – a God who created us to know him personally, and to live by his principles (the commandments) the greatest of these is to love God and to love one another. Surely if God’s very nature is one of creative love, compassion, mercy, justice, and forgiveness – then we should recognise true faith in the God of truth, to bring about good things for this earth and not bad. To heal, to forgive, to renew and to cleanse us, that we might know God and live in a way that honours both God and others around us. That’s my theory about religion, and in Jesus I see a picture of God as a caring shepherd who knows each person and cares about their well-being.

PH: 541 0607 Totalspan is New Zealand’s first choice for high quality durable steel buildings because they are the market leaders in delivering a comprehensive range of engineered steel, portal framed buildings for the domestic, lifestyle, rural and commercial sectors. Totalspan Nelson has maintained that reputation for strong, hard working buildings that are designed and constructed to last a lifetime. For 10 years the company has operated in the Nelson, Tasman region, offering customers incomparable service, first from their premises in the Wakatu Industrial Estate and now from their new site on Beach Rd, Richmond. Owners Gillian and Jay Irving bought and developed the current site to showcase the commercial options that Totalspan products can be applied to. The days of Totalspan simply being an answer to your residential garage or lifestyle shed requirements are gone as they have grown to incorporate much more large scale
buildings. The adaption of their products into the commercial sector have been realised as an economic and cost effective solution and many customers have taken the opportunity to enhance their business with a Totalspan building. However, they can still do anything from a small utility shed to a double garage. When it comes to building with Totalspan Nelson, communication is key to creating the structure you require and communication is exactly what they offer. “Our goal is to optimise communication so our clients are always informed about what they’re getting. We hope that clients get what they expect, there are no hidden costs, and we simply aim to provide an efficient and cost-effective service,” says Gillian. Whether you have a sketch or even just a brief in your head, Totalspan will work with you to draw up concept plans that not only suit your situation and land, but also your budget. The Brightwater Community Association invites you to its Open Meeting on Monday 6 October to hear our guest speaker, Senior Constable Marty Tutton of the Wakefield Police, speaking on “Safety in Your Neighbourhood”. The meeting will be held in the Staffroom at Brightwater School in Ellis Street, and will commence at 7.30pm. All Brightwater residents are welcome to attend. We will be welcoming to this meeting our new secretary, Barry Inglis. It’s really good to see that Spring has arrived and now is a good time to get out and enjoy all the facilities around our district. This is also the perfect time to remind you of the Brightwater Walking Group who meet every Monday morning at the Brightwater Hall carpark. Walks commence at 9.30 am sharp, and last about one hour. All are welcome. For further information contact Judith on 5423744. This is a group of young, talented and enthusiastic musicians directed by well-known local artists, Margaret and Fleur Jackson. Those in attendance enjoyed an afternoon of tasty treats and a wonderfully varied musical programme. Money raised was gifted to a family in the community facing major health issues, to Schola Musica in support of their development, to St Johns Wakefield to help purchase a new fridge, and St Pauls, Brightwater, for their vicarage fund. We are delighted to be able to announce that Margaret Jackson, together with her quartet ‘La Vida’, will be returning to Brightwater in December. They will play an hour-long programme of Christmas music at St Pauls Church, Brightwater on Sunday, December 21 at 7pm. This will be a fantastic community event and a great opportunity to take time out from the Christmas rush. Old St
Pauls will be specially decorated for Christmas and the music will be followed by a community supper. $2 per person, $5 per family. Brightwater Community Anglican Church
Lawn Bowls in Brightwater Brightwater had its own bowling club from 1937 until 2000. The green was situated in Centennial Park where the beach volleyball court is now. When the Brightwater Club closed, bowlers joined the Wakefield Bowling Club and some still retain active membership there. Many Brightwater residents currently play at the Wakefield Club, including President, Peter Sisterson, Vice President, Julie Hall and fellow Board members, Linda Sisterson, John van der Laan and Maurice Benjes. Wakefield Bowling Club has a newly reseeded, live green for the summer, plus a synthetic green for play all year round making it a great facility. The summer season opens on Saturday 27 September at 1pm. New members are welcome to join the club.

Touch rugby calling for junior teams
Nelson’s Lizzie wins coastal classic
Junior touch rugby is returning to Jubilee Park next month. The Waimea Old Boys summer touch module for primary aged kids starts on October 22. The club is now calling on teams to register for the competition, which
Nelson’s Lizzie Wesley-Smith was the fastest woman in Saturday’s Abel Tasman Coastal Classic, completing the 36 kilometre trail run from Awaroa to Marahau in under three hours. Lizzie has already gone sub-three hours in a marathon recording that milestone in Auckland in 2012 and she completed an equally impressive run along the Abel Tasman track on Saturday in 2 hours 54 minutes 50 seconds. She finished eighth overall and just two minutes short of Eveline Coombe’s 2001 record, which was an outstanding result in cold, wet conditions. Florence Van Dyke of Auckland was second in her first serious long distance race while Wellington’s Nicole Walker was third. David Fitch of Christchurch won the men’s race in 2 hours 38 minutes 38 seconds finishing ahead of Greymouth’s Ben Aynsley and early pace-setter Matt Pepler of Christchurch. No records were broken but the three survivors from the first race, Chris Gates, Colin Rolfe and Owen Rowse, all completed their 21st consecutive Abel Tasman Coastal Classic. The top 10 Nelson runners were: Nick Crocker, 2.52.47; Lizzie Wesley Smith, 2.54.50; Chris Gates, 3.09.16; Richard Bamfield, 3.24.26; Barry Davies, 3.27.58; Frances Adams, 3.29.22; Nigel Muir, 3.29.49; Anthea Lees, 3.32.18; Elizabeth Roberts, 3.33.29.

in pool play and in their quarter final, the team had a tough semi final match up against Rangiora High School, a team who had similarly steamrolled their opposition in previous games.
After getting off to a slow start Waimea were down 10 in the first quarter, but managed to even the score during the second period and take a handy lead going into half time. Some stellar team defence and smart offence contributed to the resurgence, and Rangiora were forced to take their leading scorer off with foul trouble. In the third and fourth quarters the game was predictably tight with both teams making scoring runs and the lead changing several times. However, with 13 seconds to go and with a sideline possession, Waimea ran a play and kicked the ball to shooter Amber Brooks who nailed the jumper with four seconds on the game clock, putting Waimea up by one. Rangiora called a timeout

and had a chance to score but they fumbled the ball and couldn’t get the shot away in time, leaving Waimea the victors by one point, 58-57. The crowd and team erupted as they knew this was the team to beat. The final was a one-sided affair against Ashburton College and going into the second half Waimea was up by 30 points. The coaching staff were able to try some different combi-
nations and all ten players saw court time in the final. Ashburton came back in the fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough. The Waimea girls ran out eventual winners, 66-50. The team now heads to Secondary School Nationals in Palmerston North in the first week of the school holidays: September 29th – October 4th, where they will compete against the top North Island teams for the title of NZSS Champ.

Nelson cyclist leading the blind in Spring Challenge One of Nelson’s most versatile cyclists, Brenda Clapp, thought she had done it all when it came to bike racing, but this Saturday she faces a new challenge when she lines up in the all-women Spring Challenge adventure race near Hokitika. Brenda has competed in a variety of road and mountainbike races on an intriguing selection of bikes including single-speeds and tandems. Although she will be getting back on her tandem mountainbike for Saturday’s team’s multisport race the big difference will be that the person on the back will be blind. But Brenda isn’t expecting that to slow them down. Brenda’s blind team-mate, Wellington’s Neelu Memon, is a super-fit athlete having been the first legally blind person to complete the Coast to Coast in 2012 and last month climbing Africa’s highest peak, the 5895 metre Mt Kilimanjaro. “She has raced on a tandem on the track at the Paralympics and she’s done the Coast to Coast so she’ll be really fit,” Brenda says. “It will just be a matter of communicating with her all the time we are riding and letting her know what’s coming up.” Neelu lost her sight after contracting a rare autoimmune illness and lapsing into a coma for four months when she was 16. She used sport to challenge herself during a lengthy rehabilitation and now the 30-year-old races competitively in road and track cycling and multisport events. Brenda will be the latest in a line of Nelson athletes and adventurers to team-up with Neelu. Spring Challenge co-organiser and world championship-winning adventure racer, Nathan Fa’avae, paddled a kayak across the Cook Straight with Neelu in 2012 while Peter Coeland and Sue Baillie climbed Kilimanjaro with her last month. It was Neelu’s association with Nathan that led to her contacting Brenda about piloting a tandem bike in the Spring Challenge. “Neelu rang Nathan and said she needed a new challenge and he suggested that she could do the Spring Challenge,” Brenda says. “She needed a pilot for the tandem so Nathan contacted me.”
Brenda Clapp rides her tandem mountainbike with Heather Bates on board during a training ride on the Tasman Great Taste Trail last Sunday. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.
Race co-organiser Jodie Fa’avae says Neelu is a “real goer” and predicts that she will be able keep up with the fastest competitors. “These races always come down to teamwork and that will be even more important for Neelu. There will be times when she will have to slow down because of the terrain but she has really good support, especially on the bike with Brenda.” Brenda’s team, Limitless With Support, is competing in the six-hour section of the race which also has a three and nine hour version. The Spring Challenge has attracted 1068 athletes who will race in 356 teams maintaining its record as the country’s biggest adventure race. Jodie says that Nelson’s Sophie Hart and Susie Wood and Canterbury’s Fleur Pawsey, who finished second last year, are likely to start as favourites to win the nine hour race. Nelson’s R and R Sport team of Ingrid Richter, Eloise Fry and Elina Ussher will also be one of the fastest teams. “The course will probably suits a strong team like R and R and Ingrid is a really good navigator. It’s going to be a really good race between those two teams - it will come down to who’s best on the day.”
Brenda says she and her other team-mate, Although Brenda and Neelu have not had Wellington’s Amy Hamerton, will also a chance to train together, that won’t be a have to guide Neelu on the trekking stag- problem. Brenda is a vastly experienced es probably using short bungey ropes at- bike rider and has been training on her tached to their arms. tandem mountainbike with friend Heather “This is going to be a big challenge and I’m Bates, who is the same size as Neelu, to get really going to be relying on the support used to her weight. from my two team-mates,” Neelu says. “In all the other races I have done I have been able to train specifically for the event. “But with this one we don’t Our locals pick their winners find out where we are going until the night before.
